I

t is hard to believe that we are now into July and school will begin again next month! It seems like we just took down our Christmas decorations and we are now about to head into the whirlwind season of Back to School and back-to-back-to-back holidays. That old saying is true…the days are long, but the years are short. And the more we try to slow down and enjoy the time with our family, the faster the crazy train speeds up! Just like y’all, we are holding on for dear life and trying not to blink! Having just come off a very busy month of planning and celebrating Prosper Magazine’s Pride in the Sky, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to our sponsors, Prosper Town Council, Prosper Fire & Police Departments and the Parks & Rec and Public Works staff from the Town of Prosper. We would also like to thank all of the volunteers who jumped in to make the charity softball game and Kids Zone a success. There is so much that goes into executing an event of this magnitude, and it would not be possible without the efforts of everyone involved. It is sheer joy for us to watch this event grow and evolve into what it has become. Over the last 4 years, we’ve been able to add on to the Kids Zone, bring in live music/ entertainment, grow Food Truck Alley and increase the participation for the car show. We cannot wait for next year, and already have some great ideas, adding patriotic music during the fireworks being one of them…but we know that y’all have good ideas too! So please, if you would like to see something different next year, let us know!!

Town Matters

T wn Matters By Mayor Ray Smith

There’s a lot of truth to the old adage uttered by Benjamin Franklin in a letter sent to a friend in 1789. In it, the wise, old philosopher and inventor wrote, “in this world, nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” There’s no real way around death, but as far as taxes go, we can certainly have an impact. That’s exactly what the Town Council did in September of 2015, when it unanimously passed a homestead exemption for Prosper residents of 7.5 percent of the value of their primary residence. That meant an immediate savings on Town of Prosper ad valorem taxes for each homeowner who applied for the exemption. We became only the seventh municipality among Collin County’s 27 towns and cities to offer an exemption that year. And, it worked to everyone’s advantage. Because the value of homes was continuing to increase, we were not only able to hold the line on the tax rate, but we offered the exemption to further ease the tax burden on Prosper families. By the way, the tax rate of 52 cents for every $100 valuation of homes and property has been in place for 10 years, unchanged, and yet, we continue to work with a balanced budget and no cuts in services. That’s both a testament to the increase in home values, but also a nod to the Town Manager and Town employees who all understand the importance of working within the Town’s budget. To further emphasize that point, last month the Council once again took action on the homestead exemption. This time, Council voted to rescind the 7.5 percent exemption and replace it with a 10 percent exemption. That action will save homeowners even more money, because now a full tenth of the value of homes will be exempted from the tax levy. Anyone who pays attention to the workings of the Town Council knows that we don’t always agree on every issue that comes before us. But homeowner tax relief is something everyone on Council agrees on. We know that the value of virtually all homes and property in Prosper is rising, so increasing the exemption to 10 percent made perfect sense. People can now take advantage of the savings provided by the higher exemption and either save it or redirect it to other purposes. The exemption is not applicable to commercial concerns or incomeproducing properties, and only one exemption is allowed. Homeowners who took advantage of the previous exemption need not reapply for the higher one. While we’re very proud of the decade-long stability of the tax rate, the new homestead exemption means that the effective tax rate is a little over 43 cents per $100 valuation, rather than 52 cents. For the typical home in Prosper, valued at $495,762, the homeowner saves about $258 in taxes to the Town. I think old Benjamin Franklin would be tremendously proud of us!

Prosper High School standout brings home a USA Basketball Gold Medal!

Jordyn Oliver

Bringing Home The Gold By Renee Marler Prosper High School Lady Eagle basketball’s highly celebrated 5’11” Point Guard Jordyn Oliver can now add “Team USA Gold Medalist” to her already impressive profile. Jordyn, who has committed to Baylor, was the only player from Texas chosen to play on the team for the United States in the FIBA Americas U16 Championship June 7-11 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. “Having the local support of the entire town of Prosper and the surrounding community has been incredible,” says Jordyn. “And having the opportunity to be an ambassador of the US and to put Prosper on the Team USA map is really an honor.” Jordyn, who was a finalist but ultimately not chosen to last year’s Team USA team, spoke to the committee after being cut so she would know how to improve and come back stronger this year. “I worked this entire year to get to this point and I’m proud to say I’m going to Argentina to represent my country,” she tweeted on May 31, 2017. The 12-member roster was selected from a pool of 133 athletes chosen

“And having the opportunity to be an ambassador of the US and to put Prosper on the Team USA map is really an honor.” -Jordyn Oliver to attend trials at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs last month. After four days of trials, the committee, led by Carol Callan, USA Basketball Women’s National Team Director, selected 18 finalists then two days later made the final cut. In addition to Callan, the USA Basketball Women’s Developmental National Team Committee included: athlete representatives Tamika Catchings, a four-time Olympic and two-time World Championship gold medalist, and DeLisha Milton-Jones, a two-time Olympic and twotime World Championship gold medalist; AAU representative Kevin Lynch of the Philadelphia Belles; National Federation of High Schools representative Jill Rankin Schneider, a 1980 U.S. Olympian and head coach at Monterey High School in Texas; and at-large representatives Kirsten Moore, head coach at Westmont College, and Mia Smith, head coach at Illinois Wesleyan University. In a press release announcing the team, USA head coach Carla Berube from Tufts University said, “We are thrilled about these 12 players that the committee has chosen, I think we bring a lot of athleticism, strength and a high-basketball IQ. We are going to put together a strong team that plays together, plays hard, plays smart and represents the United States the way it should be. And, hopefully make our country proud,” she continued.

14

WeAreProsper.com | July 2017

Jordyn, along with 11 other teammates, did just that, bringing home a gold medal by defeating Canada in the final game, 91-46. What’s even more impressive is that the 45-point gold medal win was the closest game Team USA had in the entire series where Jordyn averaged 5 points per game. “It was such a humbling experience being with the best of the best,” said Jordyn of her experience in Argentina. “I have never been that far down on the bench before but I just remembered what my previous coach Jett Terry told me, ‘No matter where you start or when you go out there, play your best game in the time you’re given’ and that really helped me stay focused.” Team USA’s first wins included a 91-33 win over Columbia, a shocking 10037 defeat of Mexico, and the 79-32 win over Puerto Rico which bolstered them into the semi-final game against host country, Argentina. “It was so crazy during the Argentina game. There was a fight in the stands and it was just really intense,” said Jordyn. “It was really us against an entire country.” Despite the events, Team USA soared past Argentina 98-42 and secured their spot in the final game to face a strong opponent in Canada. With the win, Team USA earned a berth into the 2018 FIBA U17 World Cup, which is awarded to the top four finishing teams. “Tamika (Catchings) told us during the trials that being on the podium and hearing the National Anthem was so moving, but we didn’t really understand it until we were up there as a team. She was absolutely right,” said Jordyn. After the championship game, the girls were still high off their win and were told they could go anywhere for dinner to celebrate so in true gold medal fashion, they chose an American favorite. “We chose McDonalds across the street from the stadium,” said Jordyn laughing. “But as we were walking one of the girls just broke out into singing the national anthem and we all joined in, walking down the streets of Buenos Aires in our Team USA gear and gold medals. It was awesome.” Jordyn started playing basketball at the age of 4, while living in Vallejo, California. She has come a long way and in her first two years of high school basketball has earned some of the area’s top awards such as 2017 SportsDay All-Area Team, 2017 District 14-5A Offensive Player of the

Year, 2017 TABC Girls’ All State Class 5A, 2017 TABC Girls’ All Region Class 5A Region II, 2017 MVP Prosper Holiday Tournament, 2016 SportsDay Newcomer of the Year, 2016 District 10-5A Offensive Player of the Year, 2016 TABC Girls’ All State Class 5A, 2016 TABC Girls’ All Region Class 5A Region II, 2016 Class 5A Total Points Leader (544), 2016 MVP Prosper Holiday Tournament, 2016 MVP Royce City Tournament, and 2016 Frisco ISD All-Tournament Team. Now that she is back home in Prosper, Jordyn says she is looking forward to her junior year at Prosper High School but is still keeping an eye on the goal of U17 Team USA in Europe next year. Jordyn still works out six-days a week, taking only Friday off. She says on the days she is off

she likes to hang out with her friends, swim and do pretty much anything except talk about basketball. “I really need that time away from all things basketball to keep energized,” said Jordyn. Jordyn will be playing basketball at Baylor University after graduation, but is still undecided on a career path. Jordyn says she is encouraged when young athletes look up to her because even as successful as she has been, there was a time when she lacked confidence and had to overcome obstacles.

4th Annual Pride in the Sky Celebration

P

S10,000 people came out to Frontier Park to celebrate Independence Day aturday, July 1st was a patriotic and fun day in Prosper! More than

with friends, family and neighbors. The Pride in the Sky event had a great selection of activities for everyone…bounce houses, a DJ, giant hamster ball races, food trucks, live music, a car show, charity softball game and of course, a beautiful fireworks show!

Sponsored by Cedarbrook Media / PROSPER Magazine, the Town of Prosper and Bodine Orthodontics, this year’s event was bigger than ever. Each year, the event organizers have tried to add something new to the festival…this year, the addition of the DJ over by the Kids Zone was a hit! The layout changed a bit as well, and it seems as though spreading out the activities was much appreciated by the attendees. There were about 3,000-4,000 more people in attendance this year, but most said it felt less congested. The launching area of the fireworks was also moved due to the construction of North Frontier Park, and it really seemed to give people a better vantage point and the opportunity to spread out on blankets to watch the show. Event organizers Jason and Heather Reynolds, owners of Cedarbrook Media and publishers of PROSPER Magazine, have been putting on events for several years. They started Pride in the Sky four years ago, and are excited to see what it has become. “It is so exciting to watch the evolution of this event – we keep adding to it each year to make it bigger and better,” said Heather. “We enjoy working with our sponsors and the Town of Prosper. Their partnership and support towards the event is amazing. We wouldn’t be able to do this for the people of Prosper without all of them.”

16

WeAreProsper.com | July 2017

The Charity Softball game was one of the highlights of the celebration. The Fire Department color guard braved the heat in full-dress uniforms to honor the U.S. Flag during the singing of the National Anthem, this year by Prosper High School graduating senior Zach McConnell. Then Fire Chief Ronnie Tucker threw out the first pitch and the festivities were underway. The Prosper Education Foundation puts a team together each year to take on Cornerstone Assistance Network of North Central Texas. Assistant Fire Chief Stuart Blasingame has served as umpire and, as the game is about good-natured fun, some of his rulings fit into the same category. And for a donation to the cause, children of the players are allowed to do the running around the bases. Also this year, Park Place Lexus of Plano donated $5,000 towards the Charity Softball game, with proceeds to be split between both organizations. Between the money that the players raised to participate in the game and this generous donation, both charities should raise about $5,000 each. Also a big hit this year was the Classic Car & Truck Show. There were a record number of entries, with over 40 participants. Car owners enjoyed the traffic from being so close to the Kid Zone and were able to convey their love of automobiles to the younger generation. Judges made selections within the following categories: First Responder’s Choice, Mayor’s Choice, Kids’ Choice, Best Under the Hood and Sponsor’s Choice. Winning the Best of Show category this year was Byron Hart’s 2007 Chevrolet Corvette. A very special thank you goes out to the Award Sponsor – UberWash. Their generous donation for this year’s plaques was very much appreciated.

Get Grilling Summertime meals are all about the grill. This year, give your grill and your family a break from hamburgers and hot dogs, and heat things up with the flavor and versatility of fresh pork. From tender Sweet Sriracha Pork Skewers to Memphis-Style Dry Baby Back Ribs, the possibilities are endless. Make your cookout the best on the block with these tips and recipes from world champion pitmasters Tuffy Stone and Darren Warth: • • •

Start with a fresh and high-quality meat like Smithfield Fresh Pork, which is available in a variety of cuts and seasonings perfect for any cookout occasion. Don’t lift the lid of your grill unless you are checking for doneness or turning the food to avoid letting the heat escape or interrupt the cooking process. Check for proper doneness with a meat thermometer and use tongs to turn the meat instead of a fork. Cutting into the meat can cause flavorful juices to escape. If you’re short on time, try a pre-seasoned option like Smithfield Marinated Fresh Pork, so that the prep work is already done for you.

Memphis-Style Dry Baby Back Ribs

Recipe courtesy of Pitmaster Tuffy Stone Prep time: 10 minutes, plus 30 minutes stand time Cook time: 4-6 hours Servings: 2-4 Dry Rub: 1/4 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup kosher salt 2 teaspoons chili powder 1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon celery salt 2 1/4

slabs Smithfield Fresh Pork Back Ribs, membrane removed cup prepared yellow mustard apple juice or water, in spray bottle barbecue sauce (optional)

To make dry rub: In small bowl about 30 minutes before grilling, combine brown sugar, kosher salt, chili powder, dry mustard, black pepper and celery salt; mix well. Spread both sides of ribs with yellow mustard and sprinkle dry rub on top. Let stand at room temperature 30 minutes. Heat charcoal or gas grill to 250 F for indirect cooking. Place ribs, meaty side up, over drip pan and cook 4-6 hours until tender. Spritz ribs occasionally with water or apple juice using spray bottle. If using charcoal grill, add about 12 coals approximately every 45 minutes to maintain heat. Let ribs stand 10-15 minutes before serving. If desired, serve with barbecue sauce.

Marinate for up to 24 hours in refrigerator. Place tenderloin and pineapple chunks on skewers, alternating so pineapple is tight against tenderloin. Heat charcoal or gas grill to medium heat. Prepare for

Entertaining

With warm weather comes an overwhelming urge to get outside and enjoy it. From barbecues and cookouts to ice cream parties and poolside hangouts, summertime is a popular excuse to kick up your feet and invite your friends and family over to celebrate together. Now is the perfect time to give your deck or patio area a little TLC before inviting the masses. Follow these tips to revamp and refresh your home’s exterior and interior ahead of hosting your next summer event. 1. Get your gardening gloves on. A little color goes a long way for a bed of plants and flowers. Plant some bright flowers along your patio or consider growing functional, edible plants that look and taste great. Gardening is a fun summer project that can add beauty to your home’s exterior lounging areas. If gardening isn’t your thing, fresh-cut flowers in a vase as a centerpiece can do the trick. 2. Ready the deck and home exterior. Fungus on the deck isn’t appealing, nor are mildew stains, dirt or weather-beaten patches. Pressure wash your deck then re-stain it with a matching color and finish, and apply a wood preservative to help prevent water damage and discoloration. In addition, it might be time to give dull shutters and doors a fresh coat of paint to prevent them from looking washed out. 3. Remove mold and mildew. Mold and mildew can form on the exterior siding and trim of your home, as well as on patio furniture, flower pots and swimming pools. It’s important to regularly clean the outside of your house as well as your outdoor furniture and accessories that may have been stored away all winter. It’s easy to remove mold or mildew with a garden hose, a long-handled brush and a mixture of a 1/2 cup of Clorox Regular-Bleach per each gallon of water. 4. Stop the spread of fungal disease in gardens. Fungal diseases can be deadly to plants and wildlife. When used as directed, bleach is a simple but powerful tool that can be used to help stop the spread of fungal diseases. It can also keep cut flowers alive longer when you add a few drops to a water-filled vase. 5. Clean up the bathroom and kitchen. Don’t forget about indoor spaces. When hosting friends, it’s likely that you or a guest will need to visit the kitchen to prepare a side dish or grab another drink and bathroom visits are inevitable. Clean up any loose items and use a disinfecting wipe on hard surfaces like countertops, door handles and light switches. When it comes to summer entertaining, all you need is a quick refresh before you kick back with loved ones in a clean, relaxing space. For more information, visit Clorox.com.

Meet Meghann Head By Leslie Scott

Mehgann Head is a self-proclaimed “army brat,” but there is absolutely nothing negative that carries with that title. She has a peaceful joy surrounding her, and her calm demeanor invites others, especially children, to embrace her. Although she considers El Paso where she’s from, she has moved around some, including internationally, and now calls Prosper her home. Meghann attended seminary in Dallas and did an internship at the Plano Prestonwood Baptist Church campus twelve years ago. She spent six years working at the Plano campus, followed by the Dallas campus for three years, and now fortunately for Prosper, she’s been here for three years. Meghann began teaching first through third grade, then children’s minister in Dallas, and then moved to the Prosper Campus as Head of Children’s Ministry. Her master’s degree in Christian Education from Liberty Seminar in Virginia, which is very similar to general education degree, is put to good use each day. As Head of Children’s Ministry she is responsible for all educational ministries of birth through 6th grade, except children’s choir. She also oversees Bible fellowship, with what she calls a “wonderful team,” that works along with her. Everything from recruiting and training volunteers, visiting a child in the hospital before surgery, going to see a new baby, to planning VBS – Camp Wow, is Meghann’s domain. When asked what she is most grateful for, she does not hesitate for a moment. “Outside of that Jesus Christ saved me, that he uses me. I’m nothing special, I’m just a normal person and that he uses me to do his work. And his church is amazing to me and not something I deserve.” Andrea Vogelsang thinks highly of Meghann, “I’m so grateful to know Meghann. Not only is she kind and generous with her time, but she is one of the most creative people I know. Meghann works tirelessly and cheerfully at our church as Minister to Preschool and Children, but I also see her lending her talents all over the place as needs arise. Meghann is ‘as good as they come!’ If you are lucky enough to know her, you are blessed!” There are many who echo Vogelsang’s thoughts and praises of Meghann. Married for two years, Meghann and her husband are in the process of adopting two children from Colombia. Her already glowing face lights up even more when she talks about what adopting means to her and how excited she is to become a mother. In fact, it’s the number one item on her bucket list. Meghann said, “Bringing those babies home and being a momma. We know adopting is God’s plan.” Next on her list would be to “work and live internationally for a while. A huge part of who I am was getting to live overseas as a young child, and I want my kids to have that. I want them to know that there is more to our world than the little corner of Texas here. As beautiful and amazing as it is, I want them to know that there are people in the world that really have incredible profound needs and I want them to be aware of that.”

Meghann pauses for a moment after her first two bucket list items and her eyes absolutely shine and she gets another big smile. “I dream about something for families that they can use at holidays to talk to the kids about God to take them through Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter, because those are times that families are looking for something that’s meaningful and traditions and activities that are meaningful. I would love to develop little boxes that are delivered to homes to help have meaningful holidays.” Taira Zimmerer also sings high praise of Meghann, “her love, commitment, and service for God and all children is astounding, inspiring, and more meaningful than just a worldly job. She is truly gifted in sharing the love and order of Jesus with children creatively and developmentally.” A bit of a strange question, but one that brings out interesting answers, when asked how she would introduce herself to God, without hesitation she said, “He knows everything about me. He knows me inside and out. I think more than introducing myself, the idea of sitting at Jesus’ feet, meeting him face to face, seeing with my own eyes what my heart has known for so long.” Prosper and Prestonwood is fortunate to have Meghann, and hopefully this December, two children from Colombia will also know the fortune of having her as a momma.

In His Presence

PM … and the 2nd Half begins! Ok, so here we are. It’s July, we have completed our Independence Day celebration. The fireworks were fun, the barbecues were great, the swim parties were spectacular and we even made it through the visit from that particular relative or neighbor that we’re not so crazy about. So now what? Back to work and back to all those things that we were able to leave for just a few days, or for a week, that now await us. But what about that commitment that we made at the very beginning of the year? Come on, you remember as we were finishing up the 2016 Christmas season and about to enter into 2017 — we thought long and hard about the differences we would make in the year to come. That’s it, that New Year’s resolution — or shall I say those resolutions that were made. Now that we are in July, beginning the second half of the year, how did you do? Are you on track to meet, beat and possibly exceed that resolution? Or can you even remember the resolution that was made? The gym membership has been canceled, those very expensive walking shoes are at the back of a closet gathering dust, and you finally threw away that huge container of quinoa that tasted so horrible. Can you remember which month, which week, or which day it was that you decided that you are not going to reach your goal so why not forego it until next year? It was probably far too large of an undertaking from the beginning. Maybe you were too excited in your thinking and slightly over zealous about doing something new when you set that lofty goal. Let me be just a little transparent with you regarding a challenge that was presented to me just about this time last year. It was about three years ago when I came to the realization that when I become stressed I somehow, I do not know when, had begun a habit of automatically going to the refrigerator or cupboard to grab a snack. In my line of work or lines of work, shall I say, most of my time was spent in a stressful state. At that time, I was a regional sales manager for a very large IT company covering the area from the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border, cofounder and CEO of Healing Thine Hearts — Christian counseling ministry, as well as pastor of Heart Fellowship, a brand-new church. Oh, I believe I failed to mention that I am also married with children and grandchildren who all, rightfully so, deserve and demand their fair share of my attention. So as previously stated, stress had become an unwelcome state of being. Needing to make better choices from a dietary perspective, I decided to totally abandon What-A-Burger for a full year. You would really have to know me to appreciate and understand the true sacrifice and difficulty of this decision. This was not just omitting a bag of chips, this was the actual deleting of one of the major food groups from my life! I truly believe that many of the closures that have happened to some of the What-ABurger restaurants were due to my decline in patronizing their establishments. Well maybe not to that level, but I am sure several restaurant managers felt my absence. I began very strong and determined. I would pass that orange and white striped building with full determination to not darken the restaurant doorstep or cruise through their drive

In His Presence

through all 365 days. There were days when I even frowned, hissed and sweated as I passed by my neighborhood favorite fast-food joint but held strong, determined to reach my goal. Oftentimes I knew it had to be pure evil causing that aroma to permeate the vents in my car with the smell of jalapeno biscuits with bacon, or even worse and my all-time favorite the No. 2 on the menu: the double meat What-A-Burger with extra cheese, no onions and Onion rings. Go figure…. Oh, and by the way, please what-asize that order. For those of you who are not informed, that means supersize the order. And to keep the theme consistent, make the fries, onion rings, and soda extra-large. Well I want you to know that I was hugely successful, until a major life changing opportunity came my way. This opportunity was one that I’ve prayed for, complained about, even truth be told and verified by my wife, have thrown temper tantrums over. The opportunity presented itself for me to leave corporate America and to work full time in the ministry that has been my life’s dream for over a decade. This would mean walking away from an area in my life that I’ve been familiar with for over 30 years. This would mean no longer working with individuals that were like family to me for a very long time. Moreover, this would mean depending totally on God and His provision for my “daily bread.” As a minister, a pastor, and a counselor I’ve often spoken the words “trust God,” to those who came to me during difficult times and for direction. I have to admit that I have taken my own advice in the past. However, this time I would need to dig a bit deeper into my faith and belief that God was answering the prayers that I had put forth. Needless to say, my stress level raised just a bit, is an understatement. One Thursday afternoon in June, I pulled into the drive through at WhatA-Burger. My mind was racing and reeling with the life changing decisions that were before me. Before reaching the board that displayed all the wonderful fast food offerings, I hesitated. Surely, I deserved to pacify myself in this moment. No one could imagine the pressure being endured in my mind. My wife was out of town and I did not dare burden her during her travel but a decision had to be made. The entire world surely knows that there is no better decision-making assisting tool than a double meat WhatA-Burger, with extra cheese! At least that was the message bombarding me now. I would think more clearly and comfortably once I put that delectable dosage into my system. I knew there was a person standing by, headset at the ready, and eager to take my order providing me with the perfect prescription to sinfully send me spiraling downward “off the wagon.” So, I succumbed! I did it! I did it with both fries and onion rings! I did it with a soda and a shake! I did it all, right there in the What-A-Burger parking lot…!

PM

Consequently, what does eating hamburgers and 600-meter races have to do with the 2nd half? Well, I’m glad you asked. Paul said, 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Phillipians 3:13-14. Ok fine, I did not make it to the full 365 days of my commitment. But I did make it 320. As well as, I have not been back. I have recommitted to my anti-fast food (not just What-ABurger) life because it is better for me and I am better than that. I will not dwell on a single misstep and otherwise totally ignore the success that I had accomplished. I will not allow one day or one bad decision to set the course for the remainder of the year, forcing me to wait twelve months to do better. NO! I have picked myself up, dusted myself off and got back on track. In fact, I will celebrate 364 days on July 31! Not only that but since my new responsibilities are more focused on helping God’s people on a daily basis, I have committed to be more fit. It’s the 2nd half for you too. You still have time in 2017 to make major accomplishments in your life and the lives of others. Don’t put it off until next year. Dust off that resolution, pull out those dusty walking shoes, read that book, take that trip, or call that long lost sibling or friend. Do that thing that you have wanted to do for so long. Start now and you will see just how much you can accomplish by year’s end. Hopefully, you will see me walking around the neighborhood sweating off the years of double meat with extra cheese orders that I’ve consumed. Maybe one day you will even see me jogging, but let’s not get too carried away. Just know this, regardless as to how you play, the game isn’t over until the end and you cannot win until you finish the 2nd half. So here, we are, let’s go and win this thing!

Afterwards, not only did I feel that I had let myself down emotionally, but because I had not ingested this delectably greasy concoction in over 10 months, I was physically sick to my stomach within minutes. I visited with my best friend that day and confessed my failure to my commitment. We laughed, him deeply, me only outwardly because I was so close and so previously proud of myself and now so disappointed that I had lost with less than 45 days to meet my goal. So, now what do I do? Do I use this fall as the excuse to continue showing up at the orange and white striped den of personal pleasure? Suddenly I was reminded of a race that I had watched years ago about a young woman that tripped and fell during a 600-meter race. She was in the lead and entering into the last lap. She tripped and fell hard. All of the other runners passed her without even a glance to see if she was OK. Her teammate never slowed to check on her. The crowd gasp then became quiet. The young lady, Heather Dorniden (you should check it out on YouTube), immediately got up and began to run. The commentators counted her out but she quickly passed the very person that tripped her initially. With less than 100 meters left, she passed the next runner, who was definitely surprised. But more astonishingly impressive, right at the finishing line she passed the wouldbe winner and came in 1st place. All of this after having taken a great fall which no one would have blamed her for not finishing the race.
