Waves of Fun: Swimming Safety Tips for Summer
Playing in or around water is one of the joys of summer, but this treasured seasonal pastime comes with some serious risks. Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of 14 in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As COVID-19 restrictions ease, many families will have more informal gatherings and take trips to the beach, increasing the potential for children to have unsupervised access to water sources. Because of this, it’s important for children to take swimming lessons to learn water safety skills and create safer habits in and around water. As swimming lessons begin across the country, many are being conducted safely with COVID-19 precautions in place. Protect your family’s safety around water this summer with these tips from the Make a Splash Tour, presented by Phillips 66 and the USA Swimming Foundation. Designate a Water Watcher and Closely Monitor Children. Designate a water watcher when you are in, on or around water. Watch all children and adolescents swimming or playing in or around water, even if they know how to swim. Keeping young children or inexperienced swimmers within arm’s length at all times can help ensure you’re able to provide assistance if and when it’s needed. Wear a Life Jacket. Anyone participating in any boating, paddling or towed water sports, regardless of swimming ability in pool or open water situations, should wear a Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Preschoolaged children (5 years old and younger), who are not protected by touch supervision, in particular, should always wear a life jacket. Swimming aids and water toys – such as water wings, inflatable water wings and rings 8 | WeAreProsper.com
– are not intended to be life-saving devices. They may provide some buoyancy in the water but do not prevent drowning. Swim with a Buddy. When possible, choose swimming locations where a trained lifeguard is watching for dangerous conditions and helping keep an eye on swimmers. Also make it a practice to always have at least two people swimming together. That way, if someone has a problem, the other can get help. Learn to Swim. Research has shown formal swimming lessons reduce the risk of childhood drowning by 88%. Through the annual Make a Splash Tour, the USA Swimming Foundation, with the support of Phillips 66, encourages children’s swim lessons. By equipping your child with the skill of swimming, you’ll open doors to a lifetime of safety, fun, fitness and even employment opportunities. While lessons progressively teach a variety of swimming strokes, some of the most important things swimmers learn – even in beginner classes – are breath control and how to float. These basic skills are essential for staying above water should someone find himself or herself unable to touch or too tired to swim to safety. Children can participate in swimming lessons before they can walk, and parent-child swim lessons provide bonding opportunities along with water safety education. Enter Water Feet First. Diving in a pool that is too shallow or into water where you’re not certain what’s below the surface, like a lake, can have dire consequences. Teach children to dive only in designated diving areas and to always enter water of unknown or non-visible depth feet first.
Swim in Designated Areas and Obey Posted Signs and Flags. Ropes, buoys and flags in larger bodies of water like lakes or oceans are commonly used to mark off safe swimming areas and provide visual cues about changes in depth, underwater surfaces and currents. Teach children what these signs and markers mean and that they’re in place as safety tools, not toys to play with or float on. Learn CPR. If the unthinkable does happen, knowing how to perform CPR allows you to take immediate action, which has been shown to significantly better the outcome for children with submersion injuries. In the time it takes for paramedics to arrive, you could save someone’s life. Seconds count; the more quickly lifesaving CPR is started, the better the chances of recovery. There are many places that offer CPR training, including community organizations and nonprofit groups. Remember to keep your certification current once you have completed the initial requirements. Make safety a priority for your summer water fun. Find more information, including swim lesson providers in your area, by visiting usaswimming. org/makeasplash. FINDING A SWIM LESSON PROVIDER If you’re unsure where to take your child for swim lessons in your community, these tips can help: Ask other parents in your area where they take their children. You can ask people you know and use social media and neighborhood boards to get tips. If your school has a swimming team, the coach may also be able to give you some ideas.

Another resource is online search tools, such as usaswimming.org/ makeasplash, which allows you to search for swim lesson providers near you. Many of these programs also offer options for free or reduced-cost swim lessons. Once you identify a program, visit the facility with your child to see how swim lessons are run. Find out who your child’s teacher will be and whether it’s possible to meet him or her in advance. Learn the program expectations for you as a parent or guardian. Inquire about the provider’s approach and learn-to-swim philosophy.
WAYNE BARTLEY
While researching programs, some industry best practices to look for include: Ask about the facility’s COVID-19 mitigation protocols. Swim lessons can be safely administered with proper protective equipment and procedures. A nationally recognized learn-to-swim curriculum or an independently developed learn-to-swim curriculum that follows a similar model. Trained and certified instructors, with on-deck lifeguards holding current CPR and first aid certifications. A maximum 6-to-1 student-to-instructor ratio for group lessons. Minimum of 30 minutes per week of in-water instruction with a minimum total in-water instruction time of four hours. Written and practiced emergency action plans. Regulation of the facility and water by the Department of Health or similar governing agency. Established and practiced child-protection policies. Screening and background checks on all staff members.

Modern Kitchen and Bath Upgrades Upgrades happen for all kinds of reasons, but one of the most common purposes of a home renovation is to make essential spaces like kitchens and bathrooms more modern. Modernizing your spaces isn’t just about the aesthetic, although that is a major advantage, especially when it comes to resale value. Updating your kitchen and bath is also an opportunity to introduce new technology and enhancements that improve the function of these hightraffic rooms. Modern styles simplify everyday living and can make contemporary entertaining more enjoyable. The sleek lines of modern design lend themselves to a clean look, which is supported by hidden features that make organization easier. SMART TECHNOLOGY Although the idea of a connected home isn’t new, technology is steadily improving. This means smart features are now often more affordable, easily integrated into the rest of your home and available to help manage a wider range of household items. In the kitchen, you can add smart technology in numerous ways, from appliances and climate control to lighting and window treatments. For example, touch-to-open and push-to-open doors and drawers create a sleek, modern design while opening and closing with either a push or touch of a button for convenience. Similar diversity is available in the bathroom, where you can incorporate connected health and fitness monitors, touchless toilets, mirrors that double as information centers, towel warmers and even showers that automatically adjust to your preferred temperature. PAINT Changing the colors in a space is one of the most effective ways to transform the decor, but the walls aren’t the only place where paint can make a big impact, especially in rooms like the kitchen or bathroom, where the cabinetry can make a bold statement.
Black is a hallmark of modern design and installing cabinetry with a black finish can instantly upgrade a room. To create visual interest, consider incorporating accent cabinets in a coordinating finish. For example, you could pair Wellborn Cabinet’s Midtown wall cabinets finished in Matte Ebony with upper center cabinets finished in Putty Oak. An island in BelAir can incorporate both dark and light tones for a cohesive look. DECORATIVE RANGE HOODS An exposed range hood is a trendy look that can add sophistication to your kitchen. Treating this functional element as a statement piece gives you another place to showcase your style and create a sleek and modern look. If your hood is covered, consider making the cabinet door a focal point with a material such as back-painted glass. MULTI-PURPOSE SINKS While your sink has some obvious functions, you can upgrade the space for even more practical use. Some of the latest sink design innovations include built-in features such as cutting boards, colanders, bowls, drying racks and compost areas. In addition, motion activated wastebaskets with separate compost or recycling containers provide hands-free access to reduce unwanted messes. TOUCHLESS FAUCETS Public restrooms aren’t the only places you can benefit from a touchless faucet. At home, the feature may come in handy when your hands are full or filthy. An automatic water flow is convenient and can help keep germs and grime under control. For the most on-trend, modern look, coordinate your faucets with other bathroom elements finished in gold hues, such as a laminate veneer vanity in a high-gloss gold finish.
22 | WeAreProsper.com
CABINETRY Collectively, cabinets are the biggest component of most kitchens. Since kitchens tend to be the hub of the home, it’s important to maintain a homey feel while adding the luxury of modern features. Using warm colors, gold-toned hardware and sleek door styles can deliver a glamorous yet welcoming design. For example, Wellborn Cabinet’s Aspire Full Access Frameless line features flat moulding and flush lines to create a thoughtfully integrated flow throughout the kitchen. A Morristown door in the Smokey Walnut finish and Serenity metal doors in Sand Gloss Glass marry heirloom quality and contemporary finishes for a beautiful and functional space.
Local Expertise Innovative Approach Real Integrity STACY CATE
FREE-STANDING TUBS A luxurious soaking tub is a top demand for many homeowners, and trends are moving toward free-standing options that create a focal point in an oasis-like bathroom. You may be envisioning an old-fashioned claw-foot style, but there are numerous modern takes on the traditional version that can fit seamlessly into your modern design scheme. WOOD-LOOK FLOORING Natural wood floors were once the gold standard, but thanks to improvements in the quality and appearance of laminate and vinyl products, you can find alternative flooring in even high-end homes. Laminate and vinyl planks give the same look as wood (or stone, if you prefer) to complement a modern aesthetic, usually at a lower price point and with greater durability over time. Find more ideas to modernize your living space at wellborn.com.

Worried About those Pesky Mosquitoes? Do you spend a significant amount of time outside in your yard in summer? Then you know that insect bites are a fact of life. Such awareness could well save your life in this age of the West Nile virus, when insect bites can be deadly. But if you’re concerned about the long-term health consequences of applying chemicals to your skin, then the use of natural mosquito repellants may be your solution to the challenge posed by West Nile virus. If we take “natural mosquito repellants” in the broadest sense, a number of options present themselves. Natural Mosquito Repellants: Plant oils: e.g., from citronella, castor bean or catnip plants Certain bath oils, such as Avon’s “Skin-So-Soft” Devices such as the Mosquito Magnet How you dress: avoid dark clothing Attacking the problem at the source: mosquito-larvae control Citronella products are widely used natural mosquito repellants. Some people burn citronella in a candle, while others apply it to the skin as topical oil. In the latter case, citronella is sometimes used in concert with other oils, derived from plants such as castor bean or catnip. You’ve probably heard of high tech’s answer for natural mosquito repellants: the Mosquito Magnet, as well as similar products. It’s a device that gives off a gas simulating human breath, whereby it lures mosquitoes into its death chamber. There are also many Mosquito misting type systems that can be professionally, or self-installed as well. Even how you dress can influence whether you suffer insect bites. Mosquitoes are drawn to dark-colored clothing. So, while not technically “natural mosquito repellants,” clothes that are light-colored can certainly be viewed as weapons in your mosquito-control arsenal. From a Landscaping Perspective, What can be Done about West Nile 24 | WeAreProsper.com
Virus? Besides using mosquito repellants to protect your person against insect bites, those working on the landscape can take measures to help stop the spread of West Nile virus. Since West Nile virus is transmitted to humans via mosquitoes, and since the larvae of mosquitoes are found in standing water, one group of measures should obviously focus on sources of standing water in your landscaping. But just what those sources consist of can be far from obvious. Prevention: Killing Mosquito Larvae We know that fish eat bugs. So perhaps you’ve thought, “Too bad there isn’t a ‘mosquito fish’ I could put in my water garden to eat mosquito larvae.” Well, believe it or not, the mosquito fish isn’t a mythical beast, a benevolent creature found only in our dreams, like the mermaid. There really is such a thing as a mosquito fish! I’ll have more to say about the mosquito fish below. But first, let’s consider the role of mosquito larvae in our war against West Nile virus. Successfully killing mosquitoes is based on a simple yet important observation. When mosquitoes become adults, they rule the skies. Locating and killing winged bugs is difficult. Let’s face it: the bugs are small, and the sky is big. It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Consequently, mosquito control that focuses instead on killing mosquito larvae or depriving mosquitoes of breeding grounds makes a lot of sense. If you can eliminate sources of standing water on your landscaping (in which mosquito larvae are born), you’re hitting mosquitoes where it really hurts. Or else you can kill the mosquito larvae while they’re still confined to the water. They’re sitting ducks while they remain wingless, swimming in an artificial pond, say, or a swimming pool -- because they’re in a medium (water) that is contained in a finite, easily managed area. This is the time to kill them! And you can even do so without resorting to chemicals, if you prefer, for instance: By using BT bacteria (Bacillus thuringiensis), which attack mosquito larvae but pose no threat to other life forms.
Or by acquiring the eaters of mosquito larvae mentioned above, the aptly named “mosquito fish.” But before considering ways to kill the larvae in areas of your landscaping where you intentionally keep standing water, let’s look at some of the sources of standing water that you might not immediately think of: Water buckets and rain barrels. Bottles and cans. Empty plastic pots from the nursery and other concave odds and ends you threw in a pile behind the garage.
Now Open in Celina!
Old car tires (notorious rain-catchers). That wheelbarrow you’ve been meaning to bring inside, as soon as you fix its flat tire.... Boat tarps or pool covers in which water can puddle. Uneven areas in lawns or gardens where irrigation water can collect. Clogged rain gutters and clogged drains. Birdbaths and water bowls for pets. Seepage from septic tanks. But that still leaves the standing water that you wish to keep, such as that in swimming pools and water fountains. How can you kill the mosquito larvae which may be lurking in these places? Keep swimming pools clean, aerated and chlorinated. A bacteria called “Bti” (Bacillus thuringiensis) is often used for mosquito larvae control in standing water. Aerate artificial ponds. Avoid the temptation to mass aquatic plants together excessively in artificial ponds (mosquito larvae can hide from the fish if the vegetation is dense).

Stock artificial ponds with fish that eat mosquito larvae. But which fish are the best eaters of mosquito larvae? Minnows and goldfish are common denizens of artificial ponds, and they do a fine job of eating mosquito larvae. But another fish, Gambusia affinis, has acquired such a reputation as an eater of mosquito larvae that it has been nicknamed, “mosquito fish.” Contact your local municipality regarding the availability of mosquito fish in our area. Formerly an obscure species, the mosquito fish is now enjoying the limelight due to the recent West Nile invasion of North America. I will get to your questions soon and email you back personally, swamped with work!! Until next time… Happy Gardening!!

What to Wear on the 4th of July The summer sun set ablaze, the smell of food sizzling on the barbecue and anticipation of fireworks booming in the sky. Get excited— it’s the 4th of July. Celebrating “the land of the free and the home of the brave” feels a bit different for everyone. No matter where you are on your path to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, you deserve to celebrate in style. Here’s what to wear on 4th of July to honor your journey to freedom and future goals we know you’ll crush. WHAT TO WEAR TO A 4TH OF JULY BARBECUE There’s nothing quite like enjoying a hot dog or veggie burger and ice-cold lemonade when temperatures hit summertime highs. Wondering what to wear on the 4th of July when you are headed to a backyard BBQ? No need to think outside the box—wear what you’d normally wear on the weekend. Add a dash of Americana by reaching for pieces featuring a modern take on red, white, and blue hues. Need a little more festive inspiration? Here are a few style suggestions that will have you seeing stars (and stripes). Positively Patriotic in Red, White and Blue Denim Curious if you can wear denim when the weather warms up? Absolutely. A pair of cut-off blue denim shorts offer a relaxed and carefree vibe to your 4th of July outfits. Add a patriotic flair by opting for a tee in white or red or a printed, shoulder-baring blouse. Cropped tops are trending for the season, so dare to bare your midriff this summer. Wondering what to wear to a 4th of July barbeque if red, white and blue don’t suit your skin tone? Try a similar color. You’ll look equally spirited in an orange and navy or pink and white combo. Stylist Tip: Notice a barbecue stain on your white T-shirt? Combat outdoor stains by tucking a stain dissolving laundry pen into your straw tote. Dab your tee (or other article of clothing) as soon as you spot a blemish to make sure it will come clean in the wash. Now, you are ready to dive into a bowl of watermelon without a worry.
What to Wear on 4th of July? Wide-Leg Pants for the Win Keep breezy wide-leg pants in mind when deciding what to wear on 4th of July. The flowy silhouette is picnic-worthy and will keep you cool all day long. Roll out an outdoor blanket to spend the day in the grass before catching the fireworks show. Looking for how to wear wide-leg pants for a celebratory affair? Pair them with an airy blouse and strappy espadrille sandals. Leave the bold star and stripe print combo to the American flag. Opt for a subtle striped top paired back to bold red kicks. Don’t forget a lightweight layer for the evening as you watch the fireworks take flight. Soak up the Sunshine in a Summer Sundress Going to a 4th of July beach bonfire? Make a splash in a sundress. Play up your 4th of July outfit by mixing prints. Slip a ruffled midi dress over your swimsuit and add block-heel sandals. Stay warm when the ocean breeze rolls in by layering with a striped sweater. A cozy cardigan will keep you covered when the sun sets. The key to mixing patterns like a pro? Keep your eye on the size. Mix micro prints with bigger patterns for an ensemble that pops like a firecracker. 4th of July Outfits for a Poolside BBQ Headed to an Independence Day celebration that requires swimwear and towels? Here’s what to wear to a 4th of July barbeque pool party. Go with the flow in an airy cover-up and easy-to-wear shoes. Shimmy a pair of denim shorts over your swimsuit and layer with an open-front woven. Summer slide sandals are easy to kick off to dip your toes in the water. Toss sunglasses and SPF into an oversized tote and a portable speaker to blast music while you party in the USA. Have you been itching to dress up for your next poolside party? Go glam in a stunning wrap dress that’s easy to slip on and off while wearing your bikini. A red leather jacket and metallic heels will add the pizzazz you’re looking for. Ready to make a splash? Choose tarnish-free jewelry to add shine to your neckline as you dive into the deep end. Article compliments of Stitch Fix. Visit http://www.stitchfix.com to schedule your fix!

A destination like Reno, Nevada’s second largest city, is lively but more low-key than Las Vegas with fun opportunities for the whole family. Located just 45 minutes from Reno, Lake Tahoe is known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreation, creating a perfect getaway for those craving adventure and city life in close proximity. Flights to Reno from more than two dozen airport hubs across the country – including Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and New York – make getting there easy. “We look forward to providing passengers with a great first and last impression of our region,” said Brian Kulpin, chief public affairs officer for Reno-Tahoe International Airport. “Our airport is user-friendly, very clean and safe and you can see ski runs in the nearby Sierras as you land.” Consider these attractions when visiting the Reno-Lake Tahoe area:
Reno Geared toward families, Terry Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum features hands-on interactive exhibits covering art, science, technology, history and more. Near the museum, the Midtown District serves up bubble teas, artisan baked goods, wood-fire pizza, international foods, unique retailers and more than 80 murals. In downtown Reno, families can browse the Riverwalk shops along the Truckee River, grab a meal from food trucks or swim in the river at Wingfield Park. You can visit The Midway and Arcade in Circus Circus casino for dozens of carnival and super-size video games. Nearby, BaseCamp at Whitney Peak Hotel sports the world’s tallest artificial climbing wall and other bouldering activities. The city’s Triple-A baseball team, the Reno Aces, play at Greater Nevada Field. The circular indoor pool at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa features glass walls and a tropical waterfall. At Peppermill Resort Spa Casino, the upper and lower pools are geothermally heated.
Lake Tahoe A pet-friendly, three-quarter mile outing open to all skill levels, Eagle Rock Hiking Trail loops near Homewood, California, on the west shore of the lake. On the north shore, Granlibakken Resort features Tahoe Treetop Adventure Parks where tree platforms are joined by zip lines with courses ranging from beginner to advanced. Also on the north shore, Wild Society rents clear kayaks that reveal the lake’s crystalline depths. At Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows resort, you can take the aerial tram to High Camp, elevation 8,200 feet, for mountain bike tours, guided hikes, roller skating, geocaching and more. On the east shore, Sand Harbor includes a picnic area and acres of sandy beach. Just five minutes south, historic Thunderbird Lodge, a 1930s estate that once housed a private zoo, offers tours and other experiences. On the south shore, families can hit the mountain top for zip lines, rope courses, coaster rides, hiking trails and stunning views at Heavenly ski resort’s Epic Discovery playground. Additionally, Taylor Creek Visitor Center incorporates stroller-friendly trails, marshland wildlife and views of the creek through underwater windows.
“Lake Tahoe is a dream location for outdoor adventure,” said Andy Chapman, president, Regional Air Service Corporation. “Families will find fun and excitement around every corner while they make new memories together.” Learn more and start planning your getaway at renoairport.com.
