7 Tips for a Memorable Family Picnic By Heather Reynolds
Spring is finally here and that usually means that we can’t wait to get out and enjoy the warmer weather and the sunshine. Everyone loves a family picnic in the park…there’s nothing like eating and playing outside with a nice cool breeze and the birds chirping. So, get your picnic basket ready…and since sometimes picnics don’t always go as planned – a little preparation can go a long way. Location, Location, Location: It is truly possible to picnic anywhere. Spontaneous picnics can be a blast, however if you are planning to picnic with a group of young kids then you will want to do some advanced planning. Does the park where you are going have a play structure? Is there a wading pool or splash pad? What about bathrooms…fairly important for kids (and adults). It is best to know exactly what you are getting into ahead of time. Choose your location wisely. Selecting a Time: Setting up for a picnic at your favorite park during the week can look a whole lot different than setting up on a busy Saturday. If you are planning to picnic at a super popular spot, head out early to reserve your space. Don’t forget to eat the most important meal of the day before you head out – breakfast. If planning a midday picnic, fill up yourself and the kids with a hearty breakfast. Kids with full bellies will be much happier when they arrive at the park. The Picnic Basket: I picked up my favorite picnic basket at a local trade days market – a sturdy, wicker, lidded picnic basket. However, you don’t need an actual “basket” to have a fabulous picnic. Pack up a lightweight cooler or plastic tote. It is best if your “basket” has a lid, if only to keep the critters away from the food. Towels for the splash pad can serve double duty, providing insulation in the picnic basket. The Picnic Blanket: Parks can be busy on sunny afternoons and there may or may not be any picnic tables available. Bring along at least one large blanket. The blanket can be used as a tablecloth for the picnic table or on the ground providing a comfortable spot to sit and eat. Reusable felt-backed tablecloths make a great water proof barrier for under a picnic blanket. Sometimes the ground can be a little damp and the tablecloth will keep everyone dry. Food & Drink: A key part of any picnic is the food…so what to eat? Start off by packing plenty of water. Keeping the kids hydrated as they run around in the sun all day, is important. Not all parks have clean drinking water available – another thing to look for when searching for a good location. Bring plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, which are delicious ways to keep kids hydrated. It is best to steer clear of dishes that can spoil easily in the heat. Recipes that use mayonnaise, eggs and fish are not ideal for park picnics. Keep the food cool with lots of ice packs – use frozen bottles of water and juice boxes as ice packs. As they thaw you have plenty of icy cold drinks for everyone. Clean Up: Mealtime in the park is not going to be a particularly sterile environment…our cleanliness standards have to be lowered. Pack a few damp washcloths inside a resealable bag, which can be used to clean a picnic table and little ones’ hands before (and after) eating. Bring along a few cloth napkins too. I like my napkins to do double duty – wrap a napkin around any sharp knife or any cutlery you are bringing. Don’t forget to bring along a plastic bag for any garbage you produce. Toys and Games: It’s time to have some fun! Take advantage of all the awesome parks in your area that have cool play structures, wading pools and splash pads. Be sure to bring along a few simple toys and games for your kids too. Toys and activities that can be played with groups of kids and that invite open ended play are perfect for outdoor play. Pack along a few different sized sport balls, skipping rope, sidewalk chalk, blank paper, crayons, sand toys (which are fun in the water too) and bubbles for blowing. The outdoor play options are truly endless. 6 | WeAreProsper.com

Prosper’s Commitment to Public Safety T hanks to those of you who attended the public wash-down and firefighter push-in of our new ladder truck at the Central Fire Station on Saturday, February 29. The event was yet another example of the commitment that members of the Town Council demonstrate when it comes to public safety. Safeguarding residents’ lives and property consistently comes up near the top every time the Council and staff meet to discuss priorities. Our tremendous fire and police departments are recognized as among the best trained and the best equipped in the area, and it’s because of the Council and staff agreeing that the public deserves to feel safe and secure in their homes and around town. The addition of Truck 1 to the fire department’s fleet of vehicles sends a strong signal that we are still very much committed to that principle. As a former volunteer firefighter myself, I have a special affinity for these kinds of improvements and upgrades. Let me be quick to point out that, while my volunteer firefighting services ended some time ago, I was not part of the famed bucket brigades that led to the formation of professional firefighting techniques. Those long-ago lines of community people that snaked from a water source to a burning building and passed buckets filled with water one way, and empty buckets in the opposite direction were the nostalgic precursors to the now-quaint steel water tanks ferried to fires by horses. It was during the conversion to these horse-drawn fire tanks that birthed the traditions of today’s wash-downs and push-ins. When these newly-purchased tanks were delivered to small town fire houses after having traveled along dirty and muddy roads, often strewn with horse droppings, the community would accept these tanks, purchased with shared resources, by unhooking them from the horses, and washing them down. Then, the volunteer firefighting crews would push them into their barn-sized enclosures, ready for service.
8 | WeAreProsper.com
Today, we use horsepower rather than real horses, but these traditions, among many within the fire service, have remained. The symbolism of accepting the equipment, purchased with the community’s shared financial resources, washing them clean and lovingly pushed into the fire station are important ways for us to maintain a connection to our past. At the same time, we are also very excited about the progress being made at the Public Safety Complex, where our police officers and dispatch personnel will call home. The ultra-modern facility rivals any in the area, and further states that Prosper is a safe and secure place to raise a family. A commitment to public safety at the highest levels of our municipality is one which will continue to guide our discussions and steer our decisions. Residents can also be part of this shared commitment by applying to the Citizens Fire Academy, Citizens Police Academy, and the Community Emergency Response Team. As a former volunteer firefighter, I can personally attest to the value of community involvement.

Prosper ISD Athletic Director Named as Regional Administrator of the Year rosper ISD is proud of the opportunities, experiences, and excellence that district athletes receive through participation in Prosper ISD Athletics. None of these would be possible without a quality administrator at the helm.
P
In March of 2017, Prosper made an exemplary selection with the hire of District Athletic Director (AD), Valerie Little. In February, the Texas High School Athletic Directors Association (THSADA) validated the quality of that hire by announcing that Coach Little has been named as the Region 3 Regional Athletic Administrator of the Year. THSADA is the professional and education association for more than 1,200 secondary athletic administrators encompassing more than 1,800 schools and eight regions across Texas. Coach Little served as a basketball and track coach for nine years before moving to McKinney in 2006 to become an Assistant Campus Coordinator. She worked her way up the ranks becoming the Title IX Coordinator and Assistant AD in 2010 before being named the Associate Director of Athletics in 2011 where she served until coming to lead the Prosper program in 2017. 10 | WeAreProsper.com
Since arriving in Prosper, Coach Little has been instrumental in the development and growth in multiple programs which helped the district earn the coveted UIL Lone Star Cup for the 2018-2019 school year. She oversees an athletic department that includes 12 campus coordinators, with the openings of Rushing Middle School and Rock Hill High School, many coaches, athletic trainers and support staff as well as coordinating activities at the district’s athletic facilities. Coach Little said she is “very humbled to receive such an honor from my peers in Region 3. When I consider the caliber of all of the nominees, it is quite overwhelming! This award has nothing to do with me personally. It is a testament to the amazing student athletes, coaches, parents, and administrators who make this place as special as it is to garner this type of recognition. Thank you again to my peer Athletic Directors for this honor and thank you to Prosper ISD for this opportunity.”

Prosper Veteran’s Memorial in the “Circle” By Jack Dixon, Prosper Historical Society
The Prosper Historical Society is ready to honor all Prosper Veterans with a memorial that will be built in Frontier Park. The Town of Prosper donated the land known as the ‘Circle’ just west of the baseball fields and south of the pond in Frontier park for our veteran memorial that was designed a few years ago. This is a prime location, where the grounds are maintained by the town and facilities are nearby for large crowds. This active memorial will also be utilized at all our major veteran events. One event, the Memorial Day Celebrations, planned by the Prosper Historical Society, has always been well attended at the Pavilion in Frontier Park with speeches from outstanding veterans and family members from our community. Our County Commissioner, a Gold Star mother, and many county judges have all shared their stories on Memorial Day. Often our youth are involved in the celebration by reciting famous speeches from our history. Boy scouts and the Firemen Color Guard have posted the colors at our events, and we have a historian who tells thought provoking stories on the history of our National Anthem, Red Poppies, and the Gettysburg Address, so that our youth know that freedom isn’t free. We have singing groups and choruses that attend and sing patriotic songs with audience participation also. We have the completed architectural build documents and are ready to begin construction once we have the necessary funding. Our Prosper volunteer funding committee is operational, and our campaign has begun. We are asking for donations, and all donated money goes 100% to the veteran’s memorial. We need to raise community-wide awareness of the need to fund the veteran memorial. We are asking for donations from local retailers, restaurants, businesses, and citizen donations. 12 | WeAreProsper.com
Our Prosper community deserves to have a veteran memorial that will: Bring our community together to remember how fortunate we are to have had the protection and service of our military Be a place for ceremonies of distinction, a place of remembrance, a place of healing and peace Endeavor to teach the value of the costs of freedom and provide understanding of the virtue of HONOR—especially for children One of our funding projects is selling bricks, 8x8 or 4x8, to be installed in the inner circle of the memorial and can be purchased to honor those currently serving in the military, in reserves, veterans or retired. These memorial bricks are not just for Prosper residents, but also to honor all USA military personnel. Go to: bricksrus.com/donorsite/ prosperveteransmemorial to purchase bricks. Contact Jack Dixon at jackdixon@att.net with any Prosper Veterans name who have or had lived in Prosper from 1914 to current so that their name can be engraved on the back of the benches surrounding the outside of the memorial. Please include full name, branch of service, rank, conflict and dates served. Please visit our website at www.prosperveteransmemorial.org for additional information.

Prosper Wrestlers End their Season on the State Championship Podium The 2019 – 2020 Prosper High School wrestling season concluded on the weekend of February 22nd at the Berry Center in Houston. After four months of competitions and thousands of hours of practice, four of the varsity wrestlers ended the year on the podium including the third state champion in the history of Prosper wrestling! Prosper competes in the highest classification of Texas UIL high schools, 6A. In order to qualify for the state tournament, the individuals must first qualify for the regional tournament by placing in the top four in District 6-6A. After that, the wrestlers must then place in the top four at the Regional 2-6A tournament which is unquestionably the toughest district in the state. By the time the state championship tournament is over, each wrestler will have wrestled as many as 50 matches throughout the season. Congratulations to all the Prosper Wrestlers! For the Lady Eagles: Senior, Juliana Baugher ended in 6th place at 128 pounds. Juliana also placed 4th last year. Sophomore, Taylor Martinez earned 4th place in the 138 pound weight class. Only a Sophomore, Taylor has a bright future ahead of her. For the Eagles: Junior, John (LJ) Richardson earned 4th place at 138 pounds. This is LJ’s third time placing in three trips to the State Championships. Senior, Rylan Bonds is the State Champion at 220 pounds. Rylan suffered a significant knee injury earlier in the year and came back to go undefeated at the state tournament. 14 | WeAreProsper.com
Other State Qualifiers: Freshman, Joseph Richardson, 106 pounds. Joseph went 1 – 2 at the tournament and his only losses were to eventual state placers. Junior, Chase Parham, 195 pounds. Chase also went 1 – 2 at the tournament, however, he was wrestling with a torn ACL that he suffered the week prior during the regional tournament and had to forfeit out of the tournament due to the injury. Senior, Kevin Jackson, 152 pounds. Senior Brayden Brandvold, 160 pounds. Senior, Josiah Squires, 285 pounds. In the last season with only one high school, Head Coach, Sion King commented “Our seniors proved to be terrific leaders for our team. The hard work everyone put in paid off in the end.” Coach King also thanked his assistant coaches Tony Cooper, Daniel Frescas, David Cavitt and Vic Routh for the many hours of hard work they invested in the team. Follow the teams by liking the Prosper Wrestling Facebook page and be sure to follow on Twitter @Eagle1Wrestling.

Prosper Person of the Year 16 | WeAreProsper.com
W
e are so excited to announce our EIGHTH Prosper Person of the Year!! Each and every year, we say there couldn’t possibly be a better person to personify all of the wonderful things about our community...and yet, there are so many people in Prosper that are deserving of recognition. We strive to make this recognition a true representation of what the Prosper community is. So, we asked y’all to nominate your favorite Prosper resident and to tell us WHY you believe they are deserving of this honor. We received tons of responses and narrowed down the nominees for this year’s Prosper Person of the Year award. We then asked y’all to vote for your favorites…and we received THOUSANDS of votes!! Our selection committee then read through the nomination reasons, looked at the online voting results and read through the nominees’ answers to our questionnaire to select this year’s winner. Due to the pool of amazing nominees, the selection committee had their work cut out for them…but we are pleased to announce this year’s winner…Mr. and Mrs. Mark and Cathy Speed!!
MARK & CATHY SPEED – PROSPER’S PERSON OF THE YEAR Please tell our Readers a little bit about yourself and your family: We’re both from Texas, and have always lived here, although we’ve had to move many times within the state due to job relocation. We’ve been here 5 years and are happy to have finally settled more permanently. We love time with friends, any chance to travel, family time and game nights, time outside by the pool, and especially watching our 13-year-old daughter Caitlin in competitive dance. What do you LOVE about Prosper? From the moment we first came into town, we loved the feeling of our small town. From our very first stop in town at The Cotton Gin, to Homecoming and Christmas parades where everyone turned out to celebrate together, we have loved the motto “We are One” and the sense of pride in our hometown. We love the tight knit bonds our community values, seeing neighbors and friends wherever we go in town and at church, and how everyone joins to support and help each other. We appreciate neighbors who are connected and close. What makes Prosper unique? It would be difficult to really answer this without acknowledging the tragedy we have faced, and the journey we’ve had to walk this last 16 months. Many churches all came together to wrap their arms around us. Groups, neighborhoods, so many people we had never even met. Yet they showed up with love, they became family, they stayed and supported, they have walked with us and loved us so well, they’ve met needs before we even knew what they were. We left town for a few days, in a fog of shock, and when we returned, we found our home decorated and lit for Christmas, meals were prepared, groceries were sent, loving gestures to give our daughter a reason to smile. We could not possibly begin to list all the ways people reached out to bless us, and the town showed yet again how they truly come together to take care of each other. Friends and families who have come into our lives this past year have shown us true community and caring neighbors. What is your VISION for Prosper? Our desire is to carry forward the love we have received, as our town continues to grow. Our world has become increasingly isolated with busy schedules, social media, and more. Our passion is to keep building connection between families, parents, and kids of this community. We want to do our part to keep the “small town heart” in our growing community. One passion is for the kids, especially in Jr High and High School, who often feel disconnected, struggling with the “perfect images” they see on social media, and all the pressures of that age. They are our heart and we appreciate the opportunity to work with caring school administration, parents, mental health leaders, and community to find answers. We’re committed to dropping the “masks” of perfection they often feel they can’t live up to, work toward connection, educate, encourage, and keep an open door in our home. We’ve loved watching high school kids come to just hang out and find connection and relationship w/each other. True relationship is becoming less common, so we cherish its place in this town. Our vision is for Prosper to remain a place where families truly connect, through good times and hard times.

How did you feel when you heard the news about your nomination? We were both totally shocked and moved by even being considered. For myself (Cathy), it was hard to know how to feel at first, becasue the differences we have worked to make came from such an unimaginable tragedy. There was a deep sense of guilt at being recognized. Now, I just pray that God will use our story to shed light on a dark path and bring some good from ashes. WeAreProsper.com | 17

CHRIS KERN PROSPER’S
VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
P rosper Life & Luxury Magazine™
BEST OF PROSPER Photo by Stephanie Kingston Photography
Please tell our Readers a little bit about yourself and your family:
What makes Prosper unique?
I have been married to my wife Gina since 1999. We have three children: Elizabeth (19), Ethan (16) and Caroline (13). In my professional career, I am focused on strategy and analytics for major business operations. We moved to Prosper in 2013 and love living in a town that lives by its motto of being “a community focused on families, committed to small town ideals, and providing a quality living experience for all residents.”
Prosper is a true community. Small town values and families are what make Prosper great. I see fellow neighbors striving continually to keep this true even as we change and grow.
What do you LOVE about volunteering in Prosper? “Make sure you don’t take things for granted and go slack in working for the common good; share what you have with others. God takes particular pleasure in acts of worship—a different kind of “sacrifice”—that take place in kitchen and workplace and on the streets.” - Hebrews 13:16 (MSG) What I love about volunteering in Prosper is that I always see this verse coming to life. People not taking their blessings for granted, but rather seeking out ways to serve and to share with those in need. In Prosper, there is never a call for help that is not answered. Answered quickly. Normally beyond all expectations.
18 | WeAreProsper.com
What is your VISION for Prosper and what ways can others give back? With Prosper’s inevitable growth, my vision is that we attract new families who are committed to maintaining the same small-town feel. Families focused on being engaged with their neighbors and serving the community with enthusiasm in a wide variety of ways. When families and neighbors are involved in their town, we can make a difference that lasts. The opportunities to give back and serve are there and I encourage others to seek out the ones they feel the most passionate about. How did you feel when you heard the news about your nomination? My initial reaction was that there are plenty of Prosper people who do more and deserve recognition. I am grateful to live in a town where there are so many faithful people doing the work that needs to be done and not concerning themselves with who gets the credit.
MATHNASIUM – PROSPER BUSINESS OF THE YEAR
Please tell our Readers a little bit about your business, your philosophy and what makes you unique: Mathnasium of Prosper is a math learning center serving students from 2nd grade through college. We are so proud to be in our 6th year as a Prosper business! We are about to enroll our 1200th student and have employed over 100 local staff members. We have the people of Prosper to thank for that! I’ve always said this business is about family. If we serve our students well, the success of the business will follow. I believe in focusing on the kids and the rest will fall into place. We are unique in that we don’t run our center like a business. It’s more like a home. I’m the math mom and everyone helps each other because we care. No one has ever been just a number to us, even though numbers are our thing! What do you LOVE about the people in Prosper? I’ve always loved the friendly feeling between the people of Prosper. We came here almost 17 years ago looking for a place where people waved as they drove past each other, stopped to chat while out walking in the neighborhood and lent a hand when someone needed it. That’s been our life here all these years. Even as the Town grows, the people we meet and those we’ve always known are generous with their time and their hearts. We celebrate each other’s ups and lift each other when we are down. We aren’t meant to be alone and the people in Prosper make sure that never happens. What is your favorite part about owning a business in Prosper? Our business is about kids and that’s exactly what I was looking for when I started this journey. After spending the majority of my early Prosper years volunteering in schools, I knew I would eventually go back to work. However, most of my friends were 10-12 years old, so I set out to work with them at my next job. Mathnasium has provided that opportunity and it’s been even better than I could’ve imagined! Some kids come to us because they have to, not because they want to. When we turn that around, restore their confidence, see their smiles and watch them walk out taller than when they walked in, I’m reminded of why I was led to do this. Helping a child is the best job in the world! We also have the most appreciative and supportive parents. I don’t have the problems other learning centers in other places have. We work as a team with Prosper parents to help students develop and strengthen their esteem and their math skills. It is a big deal and something I am truly be grateful for. What is your VISION for Prosper? I have the same vision for Prosper I’ve always had. My family has been here long enough to see more kids in the high school today than there were in the entire Town when we moved here. Fields and pastures have morphed into bricks and lights. Streets are wider and made of concrete; they are no longer winding and tree-lined or made of rocks and gravel. We can’t count the number of school campuses on one hand anymore and there is actually traffic around Town at least twice a day. Change has been hard to witness, but how we handle it is up to us. We can leave, but we don’t. That’s because we know we’ve joined something special. No matter how much the Town grows, I hope we remain a town and never become a city. That starts with each of us. I believe our motto is more of a lifestyle, “A place where everyone matters.” If we continue to treat each other like that and teach our children to live those words through their hearts, behavior and actions, Prosper will always be like no other and will always be home.
CORNERSTONE ASSISTANCE NETWORK OF NORTH TEXAS – PROSPER NON-PROFIT OF THE YEAR
Please tell our Readers a little bit about your nonprofit and what who it helps: Cornerstone Assistance Network of North Central Texas helps families who are struggling financially. We do this by providing comprehensive services and building relationships. These allows us to help create an individualized balanced budget, help with job searches, and tell them the hard truths along the way because we have that relationship. Our goal is to help families become self-sustaining and teach the next generation to do the same. In addition to the intensive personalized assistance, Cornerstone hosts 2 major annual events geared to providing for local kids. First, at the end of each Summer we host a Back to School bash where we provide kids with everything they need to start their school year off feeling confident. Studies have shown that kids walking into the first day of school feeling confident have a much higher rate of academic success. One of Cornerstone’s missions is to impact current and future generations by breaking the cycles of reliance on assistance, and academic success is a foundational factor in reaching that goal. Our second big annual event is called Cornerstone Christmas, which aims to remove the financial burden that the Christmas season can cause for local families. Cornerstone Christmas provides families with gifts and decorations for Christmas day, as well as food to help families through the school break. Each of these events are very large in scale and could not be accomplished without an enormous number of volunteers and partners who selflessly donate their time and skills each year, as well as our sponsors who generously provide financial support. What do you LOVE about the people in Prosper? The people in Prosper expect the best from our schools, our businesses, our neighbors, our communities, and our nonprofits. The people in Prosper have amazing hearts full of compassion and the desire to impact those around them. So many have a servant’s heart and volunteer at the schools, churches, neighborhoods, and all of the local nonprofits. We love that the people in Prosper think beyond themselves and give back with their whole heart in the area they are the most passionate about. What makes Prosper unique regarding helping others? The Prosper community is very generous with their time, their expertise, and their finances. The residents of Prosper always respond big when they learn of a family in need. One of the unique aspects of this town is that, even though we are no longer small, Prosper folks still have a small town heart when it comes to their enthusiasm for giving back. It is amazing to me that the “small town/big heart” of Prosper has remained even through all the Town’s growth. What is your VISION for your nonprofit and what ways can others give back? Over the past 10 years, Cornerstone has seen the evidence based comprehensive program change lives for many of the families who asked for financial assistance. As the communities around us grow, the financial need continues to grow. Now that we have proven that our program is sound, our vision is to scale our capacity to meet the need as it continues to grow. WeAreProsper.com | 19

Setting the Scene for Selling Success By Stacy Cate
M
ost of the time the thought of putting your home on the market to sell is also surrounded with many strong emotions. You are filled with excitement and anticipation about the next nest that you will make into a home. But, at the same time, you are also filled with the stress and fear of the unknown and the overwhelming question of how to sell your current home quickly and for the most money. This is the best point in time to reach out to a professional Realtor to help you sort through all of these strong emotions and create a strategy for how to tackle these issues and sell your home. There are many steps in the road to successfully preparing your home to sell. One of these steps is preparing the home for the potential buyers. Today’s buyers are more ‘educated’ about what they want in a home… thank you HGTV! Buyers’ expectations about what their home should look and feel like from the moment they step foot into the doorway are higher than ever before. In addition, a recent study by the National Association of Realtors reports that 44% of buyers start their home search online and 98% of buyers frequently use the web to search for homes.
22 | WeAreProsper.com
Therefore, your home must be prepared properly and have exceptional professional pictures and video created before the “For Sale” sign is in the yard. Essentially, home staging is the art (and the science) of maximizing the appeal of a home to prospective buyers. The goal is to help a home sell as quickly as possible, for as much money as possible. Successfully staging a home has proven to work. Studies have shown that while staging requires an investment of approximately 1-3% of the home’s asking price, it will typically generate an 8-10% return. The goal of staging is never to create the ‘perfect home’. Why? Because no two buyers have the exact same preferences. Instead the goal is for the prospective buyer to be able to immediately visualize how he or she would personalize the home. It’s helpful to think of home staging like the packaging of a product. The right packaging works to attract buyers. By staging a home, you make it stand out from the competition, tap into the buyer’s psychology, and give buyers the confidence to make an offer.

There are many options to tackle that initial investment for setting the scene. Be sure to ask your Realtor what options they may offer for such services. Some brokerages offer specific programs to assist the seller with preparing their home. Compass, with real estate offices across the country, offers a customized concierge program, Compass Concierge, to make the process nearly painless. The program will front the seller the cost of home improvement services such as de-cluttering, staging, flooring, painting, landscaping and more without fees or interest – ever. Any costs accrued for such seller approved services are simply deducted once the property sells. Setting the scene for a successful sale is crucial and a professional Realtor will bring to you great value in evaluating your home and identifying where the biggest improvements should be made to get the biggest return on your time and investment. Then partner with a professional stager to implement these strategies. All it takes is a small investment and a little bit of effort to make your property stand out.

Drainage Problems? Let’s Fix It! Drainage is a widely misunderstood landscaping issue. Water collecting or standing in your yard for several hours after a rain is not a drainage problem. But water standing for two days or more after a rain could definitely be a problem. There is one very important premise with drainage…water flows naturally downhill and uphill by only mechanical means. However, determining where “downhill” is and getting water to flow efficiently in that direction sometimes is not as simple as it may seem. An accurate assessment of the situation is necessary before the problem can be corrected properly. There are two basic types of drainage dilemmas and each has different solutions. PROBLEM: SURFACE WATER The most common problem is surface water. There is water running through your yard, or water stands for several days at a time after a strong rain. This would probably indicate improper contouring of the landscape or building site, a pretty common problem for modern builders these days. Correcting the contour can sometimes solve the problem. Solution #1: Berms and Swales There are two methods employed to change a site’s contour. One solution is to lower the soil level with a swale, a shallow ditch that catches water and moves that water to another location. The other solution is the complete opposite – raising the soil level by constructing a berm that interrupts the flowing water path and moves it around the raised earth, creating a new path. Solution #2: Surface Drain A different approach to the dilemma of surface water is to install a surface drain that feeds into a pipe, which moves the water to a different location. Most often moving water across the surface is preferable to using a pipe and drainage system due to the fact that swales and berms are adaptable; they can be moved, reshaped and are easier to maintain. Piping has a limited volume of water it is able to move and can get clogged over time with debris or roots.
24 | WeAreProsper.com
PROBLEM: SUBSURFACE WATER A subsurface drainage problem is indicated by ground that stays wet for long extended periods of time. Solution #1: French Drains Using a French drain system can drain soggy, wet and saturated soil. The standard French drainage system uses porous piping surrounded by gravel to carry water downhill to a suitable location for discharge. A trench is dug through the area where the water is collecting and a perforated plastic pipe is place in the trench with the perforations at the 5 and 7 o’clock positions. Gravel is then poured around the piping material to backfill the trench. Excess water then fills the spaces around the gravel and then moves into the drainage pipe to be carried away. Solution #2: Submersible Pumps If you happen to have an area that seems to consistently collect water with no way to move it downhill, a submersible pump can be placed in a shallow collection well to pump the water uphill to your discharge location. The collection well can be purchased commercially, or you can create your own by digging a hole two or three feet deep and lining it with large aggregate or gravel. Excess water will collect in the well and an automatic switch in the form of a float can turn the pump on as the well fills and off as it empties out. There are issues to address with this solution however; The pump needs a power source, so electricity will have to be run to it, and during storms when your heaviest rains occur, you may lose power, disabling your pump when you need it most. Combined systems: Sometimes a combined system could be the smartest idea depending on your situation. Areas that are naturally wet and need a French drainage system can also benefit from a surface grate that will collect water during rains and move it throughout the French drain before it adds to the subsurface problem.
Drainage does not have to be a difficult dilemma, but a correct assessment of the problem and possible solutions is needed before you start digging trenches that rival the Mississippi River! Question: Jimmie, I read your recent article in the Prosper Magazine and am now so ready to start playing in my landscape. You had some really good tips. I have a question about my Red Tip Photinias. I have some that are covered badly with leaf spots and is now starting to affect my Indian Hawthornes as well. How do I control this problem?
Now Open in Celina!
-Terri T. from Prosper Answer: Hi Terri! Thanks for your inquiry. Photinias are one of the most infected shrubs with “fungal leaf spot” which is what you’re describing. Most landscapers will no longer warranty Photinias due to that reason. The disease itself is an airborne bacterial fungus. To be totally honest with you your best bet long term would probably be to replace the Photinias with another type of shrub that is not susceptible to the fungus. However, if you choose to treat it, the best chemical to use on it is Daconil. It can be purchased at a good nursery or anywhere that carries a good supply of Ortho products. You will apply the infected areas by spraying every 10 days until you see all new growth coming out disease free. Use the same treatment with the Hawthornes. There are also some fungicide products that help too. Keep a close eye on the Photinias after that, it’s very likely to come back. Hope this helps you out. Until next time, happy gardening!! -Jimmie

Go Green for St. Patrick’s Day By Heather Reynolds
St. Patrick’s Day is the one day a year that people flock to the grocery store in search of ingredients for a corned beef dinner. Corned beef is a beef brisket that soaks in brine and then cures with salt and seasonings. This cut of meat has a distinctive pink color from sodium nitrate which is an ingredient in the curing process. Corned beef comes in multiple cuts, and it’s always best to cook corned beef for a long period of time so that it becomes tender. Typical cooking methods include boiling, slow cooking or oven roasting the meat. The first step to this recipe is to choose your meat. Most stores sell preseasoned corned beef, especially in March. There are a few different cuts of corned beef to choose from, including corned beef round roast, flat cut brisket, and point cut brisket. The round roast tends to have the least fat but is also much more prone to drying out for that same reason. Flat cut brisket and point cut brisket tend to be the better corned beef options. Point cut brisket is the fattiest cut but can also sometimes be the most tender. So, it’s really up to you which cut you use! Serve with some green beer or a perfect Shamrock Shake for a delicious St. Patrick’s Day feast! IRISH CORNED BEEF AND CABBAGE 1 corned beef brisket (about 4 pounds) with spice packet 2 tablespoons brown sugar 2 bay leaves 3-1/2 pounds small potatoes (10-15), peeled 8 medium carrots, halved crosswise 1 medium head cabbage, cut into wedges HORSERADISH SAUCE: tablespoons Kerrygold butter 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 to 1-1/2 cups reserved cooking juices from corned beef
26 | WeAreProsper.com
1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon cider vinegar 1/4 cup horseradish MUSTARD SAUCE (optional): 1 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1/4 teaspoon sugar Place brisket, contents of seasoning packet, brown sugar and bay leaves in a large Dutch oven or stockpot; cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, covered, 2 hours. Add potatoes and carrots; return to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, covered, just until beef and vegetables are tender, 30-40 minutes. (If pot is full, remove potatoes and carrots before adding cabbage; reheat before serving.) Add cabbage to pot; return to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, covered, until cabbage is tender, about 15 minutes. Remove vegetables and corned beef; keep warm. For Horseradish Sauce, strain and reserve 1-1/2 cups cooking juices; skim fat from reserved juices. Discard remaining juices. Prepare sauces as desired. Cut beef across the grain into slices. Serve with vegetables, Horseradish Sauce and, if desired, Mustard Sauce. Horseradish Sauce: In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat; stir in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in 1 cup reserved juices. Stir in sugar, vinegar and horseradish; bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Cook and stir until thickened. If desired, thin with additional juices. Season to taste with additional sugar, vinegar or horseradish. Mustard Sauce: Mix all ingredients.

What Animal Prints are Trending this Spring?
T
hey’re daring, elegant and instant style-makers. Animal prints might be very in this season, but they’re also a timeless fashion staple. The best thing about prints? They’re entirely man-made, so they’re also an animal-friendly choice. Since we don’t see them going anywhere anytime soon, we’re giving you a timely fashion brief for your styling convenience.
WILD FELINES The feline family includes a wide array of species, but only three of them are actively strutting the runway. While these prints are similar in appearance and can be styled in the same way, they do have some distinctive differences: Leopard Print: Black “rosette” spots made of thick-edged circles with a clean center Jaguar Print: Black “dirty rosette” spots, so-called because of the thick-edged circles with tiny spots in the center Cheetah Print: Thick, solid black dots Get spotted in a leopard-print dress and finish with sleek, black accessories for an elegant approach; or, leverage your LBD with a structured cheetah-printed satchel. Cat-inspired prints also look extra chic on a slinky midi skirt paired with a mustard pullover and ankle booties…Did someone say desk-to-dinner? Stylist Tip: Take your fashion game to the next level by pairing your animal print with a faux-fur coat or a sherpa-trimmed jacket—or get an animal-print coat to jazz up any outfit.
SNAKESKIN PRINT Take it from the masters of renovation: adding a snakeskin pattern (or texture) can elevate your closet from rattled to renewed in no time. Slide into the trend with snakeskin-print booties to anchor your trusty work look. Feeling bold? Then snakeskin-print pants should be next on your list. Pair them with colored shoes and layers for an instant upgrade. Stylist Tip: Animal prints get along with other prints. As long as the prints are different in size, try your animal prints with plaid, stripes or moody florals.
HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? When it comes to how many animal-printed pieces to add to your wardrobe, it depends on your personal style—and how obsessed you are with the print, naturally. Whether you’re making it the main feature or just adding a touch, stick to one animal-printed piece to avoid overwhelming your outfit. Embrace the Trend Invest in core pieces that will be the center of your looks. To get started, choose one animal-print bottom piece (pants, jeans, leggings or a skirt), one top piece (blouse, knit top or sweater) and one layering option (cardigan, jacket or coat). You’ll want to create separate looks around each one of these pieces… all at once can be a bit much! Need a little nudge? Start out with a deceptively easy dress. Test the Print Treat yourself with finishing pieces to sprinkle on your outfits. Try printed accessories such as belts, bags and shoes to mix up your daily looks. These are easy to blend into any wardrobe and add a sophisticated finishing touch when you’re on the run and need a quick fix. Not just runway favorites but also stars on film sets, animal prints have made a long-lasting impression across the fashion industry board. They may have wild origins, but play well with others, thus lending themselves to endless styling possibilities. Article compliments of Stitch Fix. Ready for date night? Plan Ahead for Peak Travel Seasons
A family getaway is the perfect chance to unwind and reconnect with loved ones away from the distractions of daily life. However, peak travel times like Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekend are some of the busiest times of the year, which can mean limited options. Booking travel early not only gives you more time to get excited leading up to your trip – it gives you more time to plan, helping take some of the stress out of family vacation. “The key is to book vacation homes before traffic peaks, so you’ll find the best selection for the amount you want to pay,” said Melanie Fish, Vrbo family travel expert. “There are clear times when demand surges. Booking your stay before that surge ensures you’ll get that house with a pool right on the beach or that mountain cabin with enough beds for all the cousins.” If you’re considering one of these high travel periods for a family trip in 2020, get ahead of the curve with these tips for advance booking dates from the travel experts at Vrbo. Memorial Day Marking the beginning of summer, Memorial Day is an ideal time for a beach getaway. Two of the top destinations are on the shores of Alabama alongside Santa Rosa Beach in Florida’s Emerald Coast. Make travel plans by mid-April so you can soak up the sunshine and get away from it all to celebrate the long weekend.
30 | WeAreProsper.com
Summer Summer is the ultimate time to take a family beach vacation, and for the best selection you’ll want to make reservations before the end of April, especially if you’re considering a vacation home. Staying in a vacation home can take the stress out of a family summer vacation, particularly as extra space means extra bedrooms for the adults to relax after the kids go to bed. Top destinations with many vacation homes to choose from include Panama City Beach, Florida; Gulf Shores, Alabama; and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Fourth of July Fourth of July falls on a Friday this year, which means families from coast to coast will be enjoying a long weekend together, whether it’s the immediate clan or extended relatives, too. Be sure to make travel arrangements by late May for the best selection and rates. The Florida and Alabama coasts are popular choices for a mid-summer getaway. Labor Day Often considered the final hurrah of summer, Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to kick back and relax. A vacation home at the lake or beach can allow you to take advantage of amenities like outdoor grills so you can enjoy one last sun-kissed meal with the family. Make plans by the end of July, especially if you’re considering a popular destination like Myrtle Beach. Find more travel tips and start planning your family getaway at vrbo.com.
