Host a St. Patrick’s Day Party with Style It may be a celebration in honor of a patron saint of Ireland, but you don’t have to be Irish to join the revelry that marks each St. Patrick’s Day. This year, gather some friends for a party that brings a bit of luck o’ the Irish to all. Perfect Party Menu It’s just not a party without a scrumptious spread of eats and drinks, and an occasion like St. Patrick’s Day makes it fun to plan your menu. From green frosted cookies to a green-hued punch, countless options are available. A buffet-style meal allows guests to nibble as they wish and enjoy a wide range of foods. Be sure to think beyond the food itself and also consider how you can get creative in serving it. For example, a hearty stew might be served in bowls that resemble pots of gold. Or display traditional finger foods, such as slices of cucumber, on a platter in the shape of a shamrock. Try creating a signature cocktail for the affair using a classic green liquor like Midori, sour apple schnapps or rum, or even a creme de menthe.
A Theme to Celebrate With so many prominent icons associated with the holiday, decorating is probably one of the easiest aspects of your party planning. There’s no shortage of images that scream St. Patty’s Day: shamrocks, rainbows, pots of gold, leprechauns, top hats and more. You might choose just one for your party’s theme or create an everything-is-more ensemble that celebrates all things Irish. For a more subtle approach, simply think green. Lots and lots of green. From streamers to balloons to photo booth props, if it’s green, it will fit your theme. You can use plants to add greenery in elegant ways, green table and glassware for festive dining and even green-hued lighting for an all-Irish ambiance. Festive Fun Sure, the food and drinks are a big part of the party fun, but St. Patrick’s Day also lends itself to some playful party entertainment. A soundtrack with classic Irish tunes is an ideal backdrop. You might invite guests to compete in a limerick writing contest or a scavenger hunt to find prizes like gold-covered chocolate coins and a candy-filled pot of gold. Find more ideas to celebrate this St. Patrick’s Day at eLivingToday. com.

Prepare for a Healthy Pregnancy 5 Ways to Help Reduce the Risk of Birth Defects
If you are thinking about becoming pregnant, now is a perfect time to make a plan. There are steps you can take to increase your chances of having a healthy, full-term pregnancy and baby – and part of that includes learning about birth defects.
WAYNE BARTLEY
Each year, birth defects affect about 1 in 33 babies born in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Mainly developing in the first three months of pregnancy as a baby’s organs form, birth defects present as structural changes and can affect one or more parts of the body. They can cause problems for a baby’s overall health, how the body develops and functions, and are a leading cause of infant death. “It’s critical that women who are planning to conceive or are pregnant adopt healthy behaviors to reduce the chances of having a baby with birth defects, which are a leading cause of infant death,” said Dr. Zsakeba Henderson, March of Dimes senior vice president and interim chief medical and health officer. “We also encourage these women to get the COVID-19 vaccine since high fevers caused by an infection during the first trimester can increase the risk of birth defects.” To help prepare for a healthy pregnancy and baby, consider these tips from the experts at March of Dimes, the leading nonprofit fighting for the health of moms and babies, and the CDC: Have a pre-pregnancy checkup. Before you become pregnant, visit your health care provider to talk about managing your health conditions and creating a treatment plan. Talk about all the prescription and overthe-counter medicines, vitamins and supplements you’re currently taking. Get vaccinated. Speak with your health care provider about any vaccinations you may need before each pregnancy. Make sure your family members are also up to date on their vaccinations to help prevent the spread of diseases. Pregnant women are at a higher risk of severe illness or death from COVID-19 compared to those who have not been impacted by the infectious disease. Research shows babies of pregnant people with COVID-19 may be at an increased risk of preterm birth and other complications. High fevers caused by any infection during the first trimester of pregnancy can also increase the risk of certain birth defects.

Take folic acid. Folic acid is a B vitamin that prevents serious birth defects of the brain and spine. Before becoming pregnant, take a multivitamin containing 400 micrograms of folic acid every day to help ensure your baby’s proper development and growth. While pregnant, increase to 600 micrograms daily. Try to reach a healthy weight. Talk to your health care provider about how to reach a healthy weight before becoming pregnant, as excess weight can affect your fertility and increase the risk of birth defects and other complications. Don’t smoke, drink alcohol, or use harmful substances. Cigarettes and e-cigarettes contain harmful substances that can damage the placenta or reach the baby’s bloodstream. Smoking cigarettes can cause birth defects like cleft lip and palate. It is also not safe to drink alcohol at any time during pregnancy. Drinking alcohol can cause serious health problems for your baby, including birth defects. Do not take opioids, which are drugs that are often used to treat pain. Opioid use during pregnancy can lead to neonatal abstinence syndrome, preterm birth and may cause birth defects. Consult your physician before stopping or changing any prescribed medications. Prosper ISD News: How Can we Honor our Educators? George Lucas shared a powerful quote that speaks to the heart of an educator, “Teachers are the most important individuals in our society - nothing is as powerful as the human touch in education.” We all have one teacher who changed our world, touched our hearts, and inspired us. At this time of political elections, I have seen a shift from respecting the work of educators to a new wave of judging the work of an educator and questioning their decisions. The reality is that each of the politicians attempting to get elected was impacted by educators who assisted them to get them to the place they are today. I believe that we are in a period of time where more glory needs to be given to our educators. Our educators in Prosper ISD need to be rallied around and reminded of how much they mean to our community because they impact our future, our students. The profession is one that is a calling and one that stays with you all hours of the day because our work is the work of the heart. When teachers go to sleep at night, they are thinking of the children they teach, and they wake up with this same thought in their minds. Always trying to answer the question, “What can I do better and how can I give more to each child I serve?” Teachers do not choose the profession because of the praise they will receive. They choose the profession because they want to make a difference and have an impact on the future. The job is anchored in creating possibilities and making dreams become a reality. You might be wondering, how is it that we can honor our educators? We can start by continuing to value teachers, empowering them, and recognizing the impact they have on our youth. The words must match the actions and the value must be a deep value that uplifts and applauds the efforts of educators. Please join me in uplifting and applauding the efforts of our incredible Prosper ISD Educators. My challenge to each of us is to notice, appreciate, verbalize, and share when your child or children have a magical moment that could only be created and crafted by a teacher who has such passion, recognizes the importance of their calling, and would move mountains if that was what was needed to impact the life of a child.

Prosper Central Fire Station Groundbreaking Ceremony Progress is being made with the construction of Prosper Fire Rescue’s new Central Fire Station, located at 911 Safety Way. The community celebrated a special groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, February 11, and heard from Mayor Ray Smith, Town Manager Harlan Jefferson, Prosper Fire Rescue Chief Stuart Blasingame, and representatives from Pogue Construction and BRW Architects Inc. Mobilization of the construction trailer and dirt work has begun. The site will remain under construction for the next several months and the building is expected to go vertical as early as the end of June or the beginning of July. The building is 30,800 square feet and will include Central Fire Station and Fire Administration which will also house the Fire Marshal’s Office. Fire Administration will be located on the 2nd floor and accessible through the public lobby. The building will have a dual-purpose executive conference room that can easily transition to the Town’s Emergency Operations Center. It will have 4 pull-through apparatus bays and two additional apparatus bays orienting to the front of the building. One of the bays will house the 9/11 World Trade Center Mobile Memorial steel beam. The fire station is designed to accommodate a truck company, engine company, ambulance, and Battalion Chief with sleeping quarters for up to 13 firefighters. The fire station was designed for direct and speedy access to the apparatus bay to maximize response time. This will be phase 2 of the public safety complex, directly west of the police building that opened in October 2020. This project was approved by the residents in the November 2020 bond election site and will include a future public safety training facility for both fire and police that will be constructed later as phase 3 of the complex. Substantial Completion is anticipated in February with Final Completion estimated between March-May 2023. 16 | WeAreProsper.com

Prosper Residents Encouraged to Take Advantage of Homestead Exemption
A 10 percent discount in the taxable value of residential properties is assured to those eligible Prosper homeowners who take advantage of the Town’s homestead exemption, now entering its sixth year. Prosper’s homestead exemption is among the most generous in the North Texas area and applies to homes in both Collin and Denton Counties and will remain at 10% unless changed by Town Council action. Even so, residents who’ve not already applied for the exemption must actively request the exemption from their respective appraisal districts. Those who’ve already done so in previous years, need not reapply. Homeowners who have not previously applied for a homestead exemption should fill out the necessary forms from their respecting appraisal district between January 1 and April 30. The original exemption was passed in 2015 at 7.5 percent, subsequently increased to 10 percent in 2017. The exemption, by state statute, is applicable only to homes that serve as the primary residence for the applicant, and only one exemption is applicable. The minimum reduction in value of residential properties is $5,000. The exemption is not applicable to commercial concerns or income-producing properties.
20 | WeAreProsper.com
While tax bills for Prosper residents include levies by several entities, the homestead exemption lowers the exposure for property taxes levied only by the Town of Prosper. “Homeowner tax relief is a topic that remains a Council priority,” says Mayor Ray Smith. “The effective management of the Town finances and conservative way that funds are allocated provide us the latitude to give homeowners this benefit.” Prosper’s 10 percent exemption is the second highest in Collin County. Of the 27 municipalities in Collin County, only eight offer a homestead exemption. The tax rate of 51 cents per $100 valuation, was decreased from 52 cents per $100 valuation in the current tax year. The rate divides property tax revenue into roughly 33 cents for the General Fund, used for maintenance and operation, and 18 cents for the Interest and Sinking Fund, used to pay debt service. The typical home in Prosper is valued at $563,531, and with the exemption in place, the tax exposure will decrease by $56,353 saving the homeowner about $287 in ad valorem taxes to the Town.

5 Stylish Color Trends for 2022 A new year brings opportunities to refresh your living space and add colors into your life. These four trends are all about incorporating more of yourself and your lifestyle into your home, whether it’s answering your need for a serene escape or dialing up the energy with vibrant surroundings.
22 | WeAreProsper.com
Bring in Nature Soothing earthy tones help bring a sense of calm and balance indoors. When designing with nature in mind, use gray-green tones to connect your aesthetic with the serene elements of the outdoors. Incorporate nature’s palette with greens in fabrics, accessories and even on the walls. Wood and stone materials naturally complement these shades for a look that’s cohesively pleasing and peaceful. Stylish Sophistication If you’re aiming to infuse some sophistication with an update to a favorite space, opt for a monochromatic look in a dark (almost black) hue. The approach is simultaneously bold and classic, but the secret to this trend is finding a shade that’s rich and deep, but not quite black, then complementing it with fabrics and furnishings that let the hint of color shine. Connect with Your Inner Self Creating a living space that is uniquely yours requires understanding your inner motivations, traits, and talents. One source of personal inspiration may be your zodiac sign, a reflection of the earth’s orientation to the sun on your birthday. The color experts at Valspar partnered with Ophira and Tali Edut of the AstroTwins to make it easy to explore the intersection of your character and style by explaining which 2022 Color of the Year best aligns with each zodiac sign. When you combine your sign with the convenience and advanced one-coat coverage of premium Valspar Reserve Interior Paint + Primer, available at Lowe’s, you can create a luxurious space that reflects the real you. Aries – Sunset Curtains: A warm and soothing color like this supports a transformational year full of new opportunities. Taurus – Gilded Linen: This clean, cozy color makes spaces feel open, perfect for celebrating togetherness. Gemini – Grey Suit: This is a color of warmth and versatility, a signature combination for Geminis. Cancer – Delightful Moon: A spirited, playful color inspires a year of growth and adventure. Leo – Mountain River: A dark and dreamy color invites inspiration for a year filled with abundance.
Scorpio – Fired Earth: This warm and approachable color is perfect for Scorpios who plan to bring new people into their lives this year.
Local Expertise Innovative Approach Real Integrity
Sagittarius: Rustic Oak: A relaxing and comforting color that welcomes coziness in the new year.
STACY CATE
Virgo – Subtle Peach: It’s the year of partnerships for Virgos; this harmonious color works well alongside others but can also stand on its own. Libra – Orchid Ash: A cool and breezy color keeps it simple so Libras can focus on a year of vitality.
Capricorn – Blanched Thyme: For Capricorns, this is the year of variety, and this is a refreshing tone to support change. Aquarius – Country Charm: This hue provides warmth and stability for a year of productivity. Pisces – Lilac Lane: A playful pastel hue that brings softness along with optimism and renewal. Add Comfort and Warmth Treating your home like a sanctuary never goes out of style, and one way to create a soothing, inviting space is through the use of cozy neutrals. Whether it’s applied to a bedroom retreat or a more bustling space like the living room, a neutral palette can add to the allure of comfort and warmth. Keep the visual interest strong by incorporating subtle patterns, textures, and layers of complementary neutral colors. Go Retro It may seem counterintuitive, but vibrant retro shades like orange and yellow, and even warmer neutrals, can help establish a calming vibe within your home. The throwback hues can help your mind connect to moments from the past when life may have been filled with less challenges. This trend with colors like Valspar’s Delightful Moon, Subtle Peach, and Sunset Curtains is less about the actual look and more about the mood it evokes for you personally, so if a retro scene takes you to a happy place, this may be the right choice for your home. Find more 2022 color trends and design inspiration at Valspar.com.

Benefits of Hiring a Professional Landscaper Should you hire a professional landscaping company or not…that is the question. You have to weigh the pros and cons, use some common sense and ask yourself some important questions first. Is this my first landscaping project? Am I planning on doing a little area or a big area? Do I understand such technical things as drainage, pitching and so on? What kind of plants work best for what I want to do? Do I understand how plants work together in landscaping? Do I want just flowers, or flowers and bushes, or flowers and trees or all of them? What kind of landscaping would be best for my lifestyle? How much work and time do I want to put into working in my yard? There is a lot of information you need to know if you want your landscaping to last a long time. One good rainstorm could wash away all your hard work. Your best bet is to either do some research online or go to your local garden center or local landscaping company. It’s better to go to professionals that make this their life’s work than your local chain stores for this type of information. If you would like to try some landscaping yourself, it is suggested that you work with a small area first. Do you want a small rock garden, a flower bed, or a flowerbed with built up levels? To get the most out of your garden you create, you need to research the type of plants you would like to implement in your garden. Some plants flower all summer long. Some only in spring, early summer, late summer, and fall. You can arrange your plantings so that you have different colors for their prime part of the season. This can keep your garden exciting and colorful. But you need to research this. 24 | WeAreProsper.com
You also need to plant flowers in accordance to their height and spread. Some plants grow taller than others, so they do need to be planted accordingly. Some of your plants are ground plants that spread along the ground, so those would most definitely need to be planted in the very front of your garden or they would never be seen and probably die because the other taller plants would rob them of much needed sunlight. So there really is a lot of pre-planning and research to be done before you start planting. Now if you want to go for a bigger project and have never landscaped before, you should hire a professional. You might not like spending the money, but if landscaping is not done properly, you could end up with some serious consequences. Some of these consequences could end up costing you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. To give you one of the worst-case scenarios, if you have landscaping done around your house and the pitch for drainage is incorrect, this could cause foundation damage to your home leaving a very costly bill. If you hire a professional landscaper, they should understand all the techniques to avoid these kinds of situations. But please make sure you get references and do some checking on their other completed projects. We are talking about your home here and you need to protect her and keep her safe. When you do decide on a professional landscaping company you should be rest assured that they will make all the appropriate choices regarding your home. You should also be able to tell them exactly what you want, and they will be able to tell you if that are attainable. And if it is not, they are the best person you can go to for a variety of other ideas. So, whatever route you decide to take, just make sure that your result is spectacular and that it will be something you will enjoy for a long, long time!
Question: Jimmie, we have recently inherited property that was my mothers in Prosper. Her favorite tree was by her kitchen window where she had breakfast every morning. I have absolutely no idea the name of it but hopefully you received the pictures I sent you to help us identify it. It breaks my heart that it seems to be struggling now that we live here! I hope I have not neglected it to the point that we could lose it!! Please help if you are able. You were recommended to us by several good friends and our Church Pastor. Thank you so much! Angela C. in Celina Answer: Hello Angela, yes! I did receive your email and your pictures of your mom’s favorite Tree! It is an Oklahoma Redbud Tree! It has been set back by the onset of Scale fungus on the trunks causing it to slowly decline. The good news is that this is the time of year for the CURE! You will need to simply spray a good name brand Dormant Oil all over the trunks while it is in its dormant phase and that will eliminate what is harming it. Email me for brand names to look out for or we can help you if you need. Once that step is complete wait about 30-60 days and feed to encourage new growth in the spring! Mom’s favorite tree will be thriving again in no time!! Question: Jimmie, I love gardening! It seems to be one of the few therapeutic things I can do to relax from my work week! I was exposed to it at a young age through my grandmother. I have really wanted to plant some fresh flowers! I remember my Nana and me as a little girl planting every holiday when I was able to visit her. I need your help in knowing what kind of flowers are there in the winter to plant? I would love to get my children involved in this with me! Their priorities right now seem to be FORTNITE and staying inside constantly! Please help me know what to buy! Thank you for your time writing these columns…I know many people who enjoy them! - Nikki R. in Prosper Answer: Hi Nikki! Oh, the fond memories of our youth! Lot to be said for simple right? FORTNITE… where have I heard that before? Lol…yes, I think most households would love to have kids involved in more outdoor fun activities! And if you can beautify the property at the same time, even better! This time of year, you will want to plant Petunias, Dianthus, Sweet Alyssum, Geraniums, and early Spring type stuff. This will last until it gets really hot, then you are able to switch out to summer color. Here’s to the latest FORTNITE SKIN and hopefully kids not spending all the allowances on V BUCKS! How on earth do I know these terms?? We all deal with the same stuff!! Ha Ha!! Until next time… Happy Spring!! Festive Fun for St. Patrick’s Day
AMERICAN IRISH STEW
Turn your St. Patrick’s Day celebration into a chance to enjoy Irish heritage with hearty foods and a lively atmosphere. When it’s the one day each year it’s acceptable to pinch non-conforming friends and family, it’d be a shame not to go all out. These few simple tips can help you put together the perfect party to revel in all things green – and tasty. For more hosting tips and the perfect themed recipes for any occasion, visit culinary.net.
1¼ pounds beef, top round, cut into 3/4-inch pieces
Decorate with purpose. Everyone knows that green is the color of the day but go one step further by incorporating it into different items. Banners and streamers work fine but setting out green candles or even adorning your light fixtures with green bulbs can help you take an extra step forward. Create active fun. Instead of limiting your guests to dining and conversation, plan some simple activities to help the fun flow. Games like a “treasure hunt” for gold coins, limerick-writing competitions or even just turning up Irish-themed music can help get the party started. Eat festively. Turn your party’s food and drinks into true Irish dining with some delicious recipes like this American Irish Stew, which includes beef, onion, carrots, and potatoes for a tasty cultural meal to fill all your hungry guests.
Reprinted with permission from the American Institute for Cancer Research 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced salt, to taste pepper, to taste 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped 3 medium carrots, peeled and cut into 3/4-inch pieces 2 medium parsnips, cut into large chunks (optional) 3 cups low-fat, reduced-sodium beef broth 4 medium russet potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary 1 leek, coarsely chopped 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley In large pot over medium-high heat, heat oil. Add beef and garlic. Cook, gently stirring until meat is evenly browned. Season with salt and pepper. Add onion, carrots and parsnips. Cook 3-4 minutes. Stir in broth and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer about 75 minutes, or until meat is tender. Stir in potatoes and simmer another 30 minutes. Add rosemary and leeks. Continue to simmer, uncovered, until potatoes are tender. To avoid potatoes falling apart, do not overcook. Serve hot and garnish with parsley, if desired.

How to Stay Safe on Your Snowmobiling Adventure
Rediscovering classic, outdoor winter activities like snowmobiling can provide a simple way to spend time with loved ones. In fact, snowmobile sales are expected to increase 15-20% this winter, according to the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association (ISMA), allowing families to safely social distance and get outside amid the global pandemic. “Snowmobiling is a unique way to experience landscapes in the throes of beautiful winter,” said Pascal Vincent, director of global product management, Ski-Doo. “That’s not to say there aren’t certain precautions that need taken when heading out to maximize fun and ensure everyone has a safe journey when snowmobiling.” Never ride alone. There’s safety in numbers, and that’s especially true with an outdoor activity like snowmobiling. Riding with a friend (or group of friends) is not only safer but can also be more fun. In addition, ensure someone not on the trails with you knows your approximate whereabouts. Send a message or leave a note with the names and locations of trails you’ll be riding, the names and contact info for those you’ll be riding with and an approximate time you plan to be back. Understand your snowmobile before you hit the snow. Spend some time learning the controls and functions of your snowmobile so you can hit the trail with confidence. The experts at BRP, a global leader in the world of powersports and boating, and the manufacturer of the Ski-Doo snowmobile, recommend checking the snowmobile’s operator’s guide, knowing the fuel level and understanding best operational practices before heading out. Also ensure the emergency tether cord is working properly and attached to both your clothing and the snowmobile. Some areas also require a safety class. Your state snowmobile organizations may offer safety training classes that teach riders about the parts of a snowmobile, riding skills, how to handle emergencies on the trail, laws and regulations and hazards to avoid, among other topics. Bring the right gear. The right riding gear is as much about comfort as it is about safety. Essentials include high pants or bibs, jackets, gloves, boots, 30 | WeAreProsper.com
goggles and helmets. Even if not required in all locales, a Department of Transportation-approved helmet can provide warmth and protection as well as fog-free vision. Learning to layer is also essential for maximum comfort. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a mid-layer that provides insulation but breathes then an outer shell to protect from the elements. Many snowmobile dealers offer a full line of clothing specifically designed and manufactured to keep you warm and help withstand winter weather. For additional safety, ensure someone in the group has a first-aid kit. Plan out your route and share the trail with others. Respect everyone on the snow and adopt a fun and safe riding style. This includes learning traditional hand signals for turning, slowing and stopping, and staying to the right when approaching hills and turns. Be mindful of signs and reminders to slow down. When stopping, pull over to the right of the trail in a highly visible location. Planning your route in advance can also help you stay out of restricted areas. Consider downloading an app like BRP GO!, which uses connected technology to provide navigation for unusual and faraway routes. The app also allows you to safely track fellow riders and download content directly to your phone. Pay attention to the weather and protect the environment. Since the inception of the first snowmobile trail system, the sport has depended on access to private and public lands. Trespassing and illegal off-trail riding threaten snowmobiling access, which is why ISMA urges riders to take “The Pledge” to ride only where it’s allowed to ensure snowmobiling continues to flourish. It’s also important to check the forecast and trail conditions before heading out. The wind chill or other conditions like snow blindness or whiteouts can make riding less enjoyable and more dangerous. Also avoid riding on rivers or other ice-covered surfaces that may be unstable. Leave your playground and surroundings clean. Don’t throw trash in the snow and respect the animals in the area that call it home. For more tips and snowmobile safety advice, visit ski-doo.com.
