Kids Say Katie and Austin
Katie: We go in the river in tubes and we connect one parent to each of us and our parents steer us. One time when we were floating it started raining really hard when we were almost finished but it was pouring and we were just hanging on to trees. Austin: Then finally our mom just goes “no, I’m done, we have to go, let’s go.” So we floated out into the rain and got out of the river. And then we just went back to our campsite. Were you scared? Katie: A little
This brother and sister are incredibly kind to each other, they finish each other’s sentences, help the other think of the words they are searching for, and they both attend Rucker Elementary School. How old are you, what grade are you in, and what is your favorite color? Katie: I’m 6 and in 1st grade. My favorite color is blue. Austin: I’m 8, in 3rd grade, and I like purple. What is your favorite part of school?
Austin: No, it was an experience! Austin: On our way to the river we stay at our cousin’s house. Katie: They have a giant yard and a tree house and cool swing that you can stand on.
Does math come easy to you Austin?
Austin: Soccer and Basketball
Yeah, you could say it comes easier to me than some.
Katie: Soccer. And this one time I had to have a half practice
Katie: I went downstairs and Do you play any sports?
Katie: a vet
Austin: Yes, because I had a game when she was at practice and then she got to my game at half time
Austin: I don’t really know, but probably a teacher.
Katie: and our grandma and grandpa were there too.
What did you do fun this summer?
Austin: I’ve played soccer more than half my life. Who is the funniest person you know? Katie: Dad Austin: probably our father. Or our cousin Andy. Katie: Yes, Andy!

Katie: Well I was supposed to be resting, since I couldn’t get comfortable, I found something to do. And since that tooth was wiggly, I just pulled it out.
Austin: My favorite subject is math because for some reason I just have a love for math.
Austin: Yeah that’ fun because we go to the same place and it’s River Bend. So normally what we used to do is get a cabin and a camp site, but now they just do RVs at that place, so now we just do a cabin, but it’s still fun to stay there and float the river.

There’s little doubt that we have lots to be grateful for, and I think it’s right and proper to take time this month to express our thanks for those many gifts. November provides us with opportunities to slow down the hustle and bustle of everyday life and spend time with family and friends in giving thanks. The pace of life will once again pick up in December as we get ready for the end-of-year parties, festivities, and shopping so taking time this month to sit with family, share a meal, and offer thanks is very appropriate. We have been blessed with an abundance of grace in virtually every aspect of our lives. Prosper is an extremely welcoming place where our motto is put into practice every day – Prosper is a place where everyone matters. This Thanksgiving season, I challenge each of us to exemplify our motto in some form or fashion. Take time this month to visit a sick friend, reach out to someone in need, meet a stranger and offer a hand, donate to a truly worthy charity, or express it in any way you feel appropriate. And, include the whole family. Our kids and grandkids learn from us – in either positive or negative ways – about how to live their lives, often without us even noticing. I would like each of us to present a positive, reaffirming example for the next generation. November also includes a day when we stop to honor the many men and women who have served and are serving in our armed forces. Veterans Day, a day to honor active duty, retired and former military members, is November 11. I’m among the many Prosper residents who hold a special

place in our hearts for the sacrifices that veterans, and their families, have made and are making. Set aside some time on November 11 to fly your flag and reach out to a veteran or active duty military member and say thanks. Please remember that our tremendous annual Christmas festival is moving this year because of construction downtown. To accommodate the construction, the Prosper Christmas Festival committee has moved the celebration to Frontier Park. It’s scheduled for Saturday, December 2 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the large soccer fields area. Booths, games, food, vendors and lots of attractions are scheduled, so make your plans to attend. Get to the park, or to the park and ride shuttle area at Prosper High School, early to view the Prosper Rotary and Lions Clubs Christmas Parade. It will be held completely within Frontier Park, so make plans to arrive early for the parade and stay late for the fireworks display. And, finally, the Christmas festival, the Community Picnic, and the many smaller events that our staff puts on throughout the year are almost always completely dependent on sponsor support, and we appreciate the businesses and organizations that step up and help us put these on at no charge to attendees. Working hand-in-hand with our growing business community is something the staff and Council very much appreciate. Thank you!

Eagles Soar Past Creekview in 62-21 Road Win
After a shocking loss to The Colony, the Prosper Eagles were geared up for a come-back win against a struggling Carrollton Creekview team. Kaleb Adams, Jostein Clarke, and David Alvarez each had two touchdowns in the 62-21 win over Carrollton Creekview. Kaleb Adams scored early for the Eagles, followed by a 25-yard pass to Jostein Clark from junior quarterback Shoemaker. Early in the second quarter, Adams would get his second touchdown of the night on a 6-yard run. The Eagles led Creekview 21-0 but it seemed Creekview was ready for a fight as they answered with back-to-back touchdown runs by Marquell Phillips, one being a 79-yard run. With less than two minutes left in the first half, Clarke had a small touchdown run, bringing the score to 28-14. As the clock was winding down on the first half, it looked as if the teams would be going into halftime separated by just two touchdowns. But in the final seconds of the half, senior Aiden Carr found the end zone on a 15-yard pass by Shoemaker, bringing the score to 35-14. Prosper returned from halftime and dominated Creekview in the second half, scoring four more times, one a 50-yard Shoemaker pass to Devin Haskins, and 3 rushing touchdowns by David Alvarez and Cameron Conde. Prosper (7-2, 5-1 in District 15-5A) finished the evening with 644 total yards and didn’t allow a single completion by Creekview. Prosper is looking to clinch a playoff spot with a win over Lake Dallas next week.

Prosper Lady Eagles Surge Ahead as Area Champs The Prosper Lady Eagles are the new Area Champions after sweeping Highland Park 3-0 on November 3 in front of a large Prosper crowd in Coppell. The Lady Eagles took an early lead in set one with seniors Haley Killinger and Taryn Weber showing the way. Junior Kayla Martin played great defense as well as Prosper takes the first 25-21. Four points would be the closest Highland Park would come to beating Prosper as junior Madi Whitmire along with Killinger, CiCi Hecht and Hope Gramly dominated the court in sets two and three. In set two Gramly, Killinger and Hecht had some incredible blocks, while Whitmire does what she does best by setting the ball in absolute perfect position. Prosper won the second set 25-13. Set three was more of the same as the Lady Eagles won 25-16. Killinger ended the night with 15 kills while Martin recorded 12 digs. Whitmire ended the night with 28 assists and 4 kills. The Prosper Lady Eagles will face the winner of the ReedyForney match in the Regional Quarterfinals.

Mighty Eagle Band Among Texas’ Best
By Renee Marler
For the first time in Prosper history, the Prosper High School Mighty Eagle Band will join the top 32 5A bands in the state of Texas at the UIL State Marching Contest. The event will take place from November 6-8 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The band secured their spot by taking second place at the UIL Area B Area Marching Contest on October 28th. At the Area contest, the Prosper band competed in both music and marching with all of the bands from Region 5, Region 24 and Region 25 that had earned Superior First Division ratings at their respective UIL Region contests. These regions consist of a total of 35 5A schools from approximately 15 DFW school districts, such as Fort Worth, Mansfield, Arlington, Frisco, Little Elm,

Plano, McKinney, Lovejoy and others. The Area Contest consisted of two rounds, and only the top 10 bands would advance to the final round. Prosper had a strong second place finish in the preliminary round. Of the remaining 10 bands that went on to the finals, only the top 3 would make it to State. For the first time in the Mighty Eagle’s band history, their second-place finish would qualify them for the state competition! The band will also be representing Prosper alongside 100 of the top marching bands in the United States at the Bands of America Grand National Marching Competition in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Graduating from Southern Methodist University then heading straight to the University of Texas School of Dentistry, Veronica always dreamed of owning her own office. After completing her Doctor of Dental Surgery, Veronica practiced her profession in different settings, learning about all types of dental businesses – “the good, the bad, and the ugly.” After gaining professional experience and learning about the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of business models, Veronica and her husband, John choose Prosper as the ideal place to put down roots. According to Dr. Mueller’s philosophy, owning and operating your own business, means your values, beliefs, knowledge, and tastes are reflected in everything from the plants in your waiting room to the anesthetic in your operatory. Some think that the old-fashioned hometown dentist is an artifact of the past, and that corporate chains are the way of the future; but Dr. Mueller believes deeply that long-term personal relationships, mutual respect, and caring are essential for optimal health care delivery.

When Dr. Mueller thought about the kind of practice she wanted to create, she knew she had to incorporate the latest technology. Dr. Mueller is so proud to offer digital scanning for crowns, veneers, bridges, occlusal guards and many other services. Scanning is not just an awesome tool to facilitate work returning from the lab quicker, at the end of your scan it is possible to manipulate the 3D image of your teeth on the touch screen computer! Gentle Creek Dental also provides only digital radiography (x-rays). Digital not only means faster diagnostic procedures but less radiation exposure. Dr. Mueller and the staff are happy to file your insurance and assist you with any questions you may have regarding your treatment or insurance benefits. Dr. Mueller is proud to be the second generation of women business owners in her family. She is dedicated to creating a dental practice focused on the needs of the people she serves, and summed up her objective quite simply, saying, “My goal is to have a dental practice that offers everything that I want as a Patient.” Dr. Mueller invites you to stop by her offices, take the grand tour, and visit with the Gentle Creek Dental Family. They are open Tuesday through Friday, with Saturday hours by appointment.

The Sweet Life
Bringing Awareness
to
Type One Diabetes
By: Renee Marler
(back row) Emily Wallace, Riley Horton, Rhonny Rowden, Catherine Kirsch, Ashlee Wells, Audrey Lane, Sydney Wall (front row) Ruby Young, Natali Young November is recognized across the globe as National Diabetes Awareness Month. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Both are chronic diseases that are very serious and can cause life-long complications or even death. The most common type of diabetes is Type 2 Diabetes, which accounts for approximately ninety percent of diabetes cases. In Type 2 Diabetes, the body is unable to use insulin effectively, which is called insulin resistance. As Type 2 Diabetes progresses, the pancreas may begin to produce less insulin, resulting in insulin deficiency. Often times, Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented or delayed when combined with a healthy lifestyle. In the lesser-known and highly misunderstood Type 1 Diabetes, the pancreas stops producing the hormone that controls blood sugar levels, called insulin. The body mistakenly destroys the beta cells, that produce insulin, which ultimately presents as Type 1 Diabetes. Because it is an autoimmune disease, there is nothing anyone can do to prevent Type 1 Diabetes. Only 5% of people with diabetes have Type 1 Diabetes, for which there is currently no cure. Because Type 1 Diabetes is a disease that does not go away and requires constant management, it’s not uncommon for T1D’s in communities to form friendships for encouragement and support. In Prosper, the initial group was formed on Facebook and meets monthly when possible. Rhonny Rowden of Prosper was diagnosed in 1993 while studying Kinesiology in college. Her courses in physiology had made her suspicious of some symptoms she had and her best friend, who was a Type 1 also, went to the doctor with her to get the official diagnosis. “I immersed myself in learning about this disease. This was before all the new technology available today,” said Rowden. Another Prosper resident, Natali Young has been living with Type 1 Diabetes for 38 years after being diagnosed at age 11. She says that the biggest struggle is food. Because everything we eat, as well as activity, weather, and stress affect blood sugar in some way, Type 1 Diabetics must carefully count carbs and adjust insulin while taking into account all the other variables. “Trying to understand and figure out why there are lows and highs is frustrating,” said Natali. “And sometimes you just never know and have to just take it day to day.”
28
WeAreProsper.com | November 2017
Another constant struggle echoed by most every Type 1 Diabetic is awareness. Young said as a child she didn’t want people to know she had Type 1 Diabetes but now uses her voice to try to explain the differences in Type 1 and Type 2 since most people are unaware. One way she is able to bring awareness is with her Diabetes Alert Dog, or DAD, named Ruby. About five years ago, Young began having hypoglycemia unawareness episodes where she would be dazed. She found a group called Retrieving Freedom, Inc. and began the process of obtaining a service dog. On December 22, 2013, Young brought Ruby home. Ruby alerts to Young’s high and low blood sugars. “Ruby can catch a low before my meter so if she alerts, by pawing and if I am having a rapid decline Ruby’s paw is more intense and she stares at me until my BG comes up,” said Young. Having a DAD brings obvious attention and with that, awareness. “People see me and wonder why I have a service dog, because I don’t look sick, but I would rather them ask what she does than to stare and wonder,” Young said.

Rachel Horton’s 10-year old daughter, Riley, is the newest member of the group, as she was just diagnosed in March of 2017. “The hardest part of being Type 1 is the poking and daily shots, but it’s made me stronger because I refuse to give up the things I love such as soccer and softball,” said Riley. With each year, the hope for a cure for Type 1 Diabetes continues but until there is a cure, the need for awareness continues. With each correct diagnosis, there is a story of a misdiagnosis causing serious long-term effects and sometimes even death. The symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes come on quickly and can often be masked as a virus or even the flu. Symptoms include drowsiness or lethargy, extreme thirst, frequent urination, heavy or labored breathing, sudden weight loss, fruity breath, and sometimes unconsciousness. Living with Type 1 Diabetes is often a struggle, but as more people understand about the disease, that weight becomes a little lighter. Young concluded by saying, “People are sometimes afraid of what they don’t know so spreading awareness and educating is key.”

Give a Fall Facelift to Outdoor Entertaining Whether it’s pumpkin spice everything, sweater weather or the anticipation of the holidays, there are many reasons to be excited about this time of year. Autumn is the perfect time to extend the warm-weather fun and celebrate with some fall-focused outdoor entertaining. Just as the weather is changing, so can your approach to cooler weather celebrations. Try these tips to help you make the most of your fall festivities: • There’s no need to say farewell to the outdoors just yet. Make the focal point of your party a cozy outdoor setting, such as a patio with heaters or a fire pit. Add some warm blankets and comfy pillows, and you’ll hardly notice the lower temps.
Cinnamon Mulled Sangria Recipe courtesy of the World Wine Guys, authors of “Red Wine” 1 bottle Eppa Sangria 1 cup apple cider 1/2 cup Licor 43 liqueur 2 cinnamon sticks
• Remember days get shorter as they grow colder, so a fall get-together may require special lighting to keep things going after the sun goes down. Fall-inspired string lights, lanterns or candles can add the perfect ambiance for a party that lasts well into the late-night hours. You can find great, affordable options online.
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
• While it may seem like time to swap the tiki drinks and frozen cocktails for hot toddies and spiked ciders, fall doesn’t mean you must say goodbye to warm-weather favorites. Put an autumn twist on go-to drinks by adding in fall spices. This easy mulled sangria recipe is perfect for sharing with friends at outdoor celebrations.
In large saucepan, mix sangria, apple cider, liqueur, cinnamon sticks, brown sugar, cloves and orange peel. Bring to simmer over medium heat and cook, stirring, 5 minutes, or until sugar dissolves. Stir in apples and simmer additional 5 minutes. Serve warm with desired garnishes.

Growing Prosper
Some Tips to Make Your Gardening Easier By Jimmie Gibson
Making gardening easier doesn't mean there won't always be something to do in the garden. Although most gardeners enjoy the time they spend working in their gardens, there comes a point when garden tasks can get ahead of you, making you can feel like you've bitten off more than you can chew. The following garden planning tips can put you a little ahead of the game. Some of these tips are common sense and some may seem like more work in the short term, but they all really will make gardening easier for you. And that way you'll have time for the fun stuff! Feed the Soil You've heard it a thousand times, but do you do it? Start with great soil and you'll wind up with great plants. Healthy plants get fewer diseases, attract less insect pests and require less water. This should typically be done at least twice a year (Spring and Fall). Start with a good analysis of your existing soil. You can have all the essential nutrients tested or just the pH. Many nurseries provide this service as well as your local Cooperative Extension Service. If your soil is deficient in any minerals or nutrients, amend the soil according to recommendations. Then keep adding organic matter, like compost, regularly. (Texas A&M Extension off Coit Rd. in Dallas is a great one.) Slow release, organic fertilizers can help supplement deficient nutrients. But feeding plants with synthetic fertilizers can actually destroy the beneficial organisms and organic matter within soil and only provide a short fix. It's like turning your garden into a drug addict. It will need regular doses of fertilizer and more and more to get the same effect.

Group Plants by Their Needs I'm sure you've heard the saying "Right plant for the right spot." That's the beginning of the equation. Of course, you're going to want to put sun lovers in the sun and ground covers where they can roam. But consider how efficient it would be if you put all your water hogs together so you could just turn on the sprinklers or drag the hose to one area and be done. The same goes for plants that require a lot of deadheading or vegetables that need to be harvested daily or hourly, like zucchini. You can still mix in different bloom times and variations in color, form and texture. It's just the heavy maintenance chores that should be consolidated. Choose Lower Maintenance Perennials There will always be prima Dona plants you have to have (although probably less and less of them as you get older), but make the backbone of your garden perennial flowers that can take care of themselves. Plants like Salvias and Sedums that look good all season and don't need deadheading, pinching or staking. Raised Beds & Containers It's much easier to control your garden if it has definite boundaries. Containers provide the ultimate in control. You control the soil, water, exposure and even limit the growth of the plants in the container. Raised beds separate the garden beds from their surroundings. Ideally, lift the beds up by 6 inches or more. You'll have the benefits of controlling your borders and you'll be saving your back from some bending. Many popular plants need excellent drainage, raised beds give you exactly that. Install Drip Irrigation This is one of those suggestions that sound like it's going to cost a fortune and require a professional to install - and it can. But it doesn't have to. They've reduced drip irrigation to a tinker toy level. Believe me, if I can grasp it, so can you. There is an initial cost, although no where near what you might fear, and you will need to do some measuring. But unless you rely solely on rain to water your gardens, you will actually save money in the long run. Drip irrigation is far more efficient than any other type of
watering. Only negative is it can be difficult to measure amount of water your plants are getting so adjusting will be required. Mulch Again, this is common sense and something you've been told a thousand times. Yet many gardeners only view mulch as decoration. Mulch does make a garden look more attractive, but it also keeps the soil and plant roots cool, retains moisture so you can water less often, prevents weed seeds from seeing the light of day and sprouting and feeds the soil. Right there you've cut down on watering, weeding and fertilizing time. I prefer Shredded Cedar. Ergonomic Tools A lot of gardening is repetitive motion and can be very stressful on the joints, especially the wrists and back. Thankfully garden tool companies have been coming out with more and better tools that work with the body, taking some of the bending and squeezing out of garden work. Look around for ratchet pruners, bent rakes, cushioned handles and trowels that don't require you to bend your wrist. Wheels Watch a child with a new wagon. They can't find enough things to put in it or enough places to go. Now think about how long you've put off moving that cement bird bath or how many plants are still sitting in pots on your driveway because you didn't want to make one more trip. This is why man invented the wheel. Get yourself at least one good garden cart or wheelbarrow and don't go out into the garden without it. You can tote your tools, move plants, harvest, toss weeds right into it and glide down to the compost heap. No matter how small your plot is, you'll get more done with wheels. If you have a very large plot, consider wheels with a motor!

They may never enjoy deadheading the petunias, I know I don't, but planting, harvesting, learning what's a weed, collecting insects - these are all activities that will get them out into the garden. Drug Take Back Day Sets High Mark for Drug Collection
event proved to be among the most successful, says Firefighter/Paramedic Marty Nevil, who coordinates the two events with Police Officer Erin Hubbard. “We collected 11 boxes of expired prescription drugs and overthe-counter medications, weighing 231 lb.,” said Nevil. “We continually increase the collection amount with each event.” Members of the Central Fire Department’s B-Shift assisted with the collection.
While initially intended as a convenience for residents looking to relieve themselves of unused or expired drugs and medications, the twice-yearly Drug Take Back Days are proving to be a valuable resource for Prosper residents.
A steady stream of residents visited the lobby with all manner of drugs, from the 10:00 a.m. open to the 2:00 p.m. close. Most who dropped by shared their appreciation for the opportunity to dispose of their medications safely and reliably. While the majority of the drop-offs were by Prosper residents, a good number of individuals who participated admitted to being from surrounding cities and towns. “We had three people say they cleaned out a deceased person’s pantry,” said Nevil. “Another said he operated a rehabilitation clinic and brought in the drugs they collected from the patients.”
National Drug Take Back Day was begun several years ago by the Drug Enforcement Administration in response to the alarming number of drug-related crimes resulting from the abuse of prescribed drugs and medications. Many of the pain relief drugs prescribed for patients who undergo surgical procedures wound up in the hands of abusers or drug peddlers. Some of these are addictive and extremely dangerous when used incorrectly. Like many communities, Prosper agreed to participate in the DEA program, with the Police and Fire Departments agreeing to co-sponsor the two events, one in the spring and one in the fall. This year’s autumn version event took place on Oct. 28 at the Central Fire Station, where it has been held for the last several years. Promoted as a free service where no questions are asked, the just-concluded

The program accepts all medications, except those which are illegal to possess, and while medical devices are not accepted, unused or expired syringes are taken. An individual inquired about disposal of thermometers with mercury, and while not accepted at the site, the person was told of a drop off site at Best Buy which would take it. “We’re pleased to offer this service, especially because without it, the alternative might be to flush these medications down the toilet or send them to the landfill. Both of these can harm our drinking water and environment,” she said. “This is a much better alternative.”

local Collin County constituents for their outstanding wartime sacrifices and peacetime community involvement. “It is my high honor to congratulate this year’s twenty veteran honorees,” said Johnson in a press release. “Collin County folks nominated a competitive group of veterans this year, and the independent CVC selection board had their work cut out for them. The twenty CVC Honorees being recognized at this final ceremony are a remarkable and inspiring group of local heroes. They represent several military branches and a wide array of ranks. But most importantly, they represent several generations of faithful service to the protection of our Great Nation and the betterment of North Texas. I look forward to paying tribute to them later this month, and I hope to see a large community turnout join me as we pass down our honorees’ examples of patriotism, bravery, and love of country to future generations.” Johnson entered the following information into the Congressional Record in Washington, D.C. when he officially announced the recipients of the 2017 Congressional Veteran Commendation for the Third District of Texas. “I hope these veterans’ stories galvanize future generations to pick up the mantle of service. I thank each and every one of these patriots for their unfaltering leadership and selfless service to our country and community.”
Prosper’s David Bristol Honored with Congressional Commendation By Joyce Godwin
Servant leadership seems to be a common thread among members of the military. Where once they carried weapons and flew military aircraft, now they serve the communities in which they live as leaders and volunteers. Congressman Sam Johnson recognized that service Saturday in his annual Congressional Veterans Commendation Ceremony at Collin College where he honored twenty members of Collin County who are veterans and continue to serve their communities. The honorees were nominated by

About Bristol he said “Major David Bristol served in the United States Air Force from 1987 to 2007. During his 20-year career in the Air Force, Mr. Bristol served our Great Nation with dedication, distinction, and unwavering allegiance. After graduating from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1987, Mr. Bristol served as an activeduty fighter pilot flying F-111s and F-15Es in Operation Desert Shield, Operation Desert Storm, Northern Watch and Southern Watch where he served as an aircraft commander against a heavily defended SCUD facility near Baghdad. BLUE STAR STORAGE
“Major David Bristol, let me both thank and congratulate you on your exceptional service to our country and community both past and present. It is my pleasure to award you the 2017 Congressional Veteran Commendation for the Third District of Texas.” Bristol says he’s humbled to be a part of a group of people who’ve all sacrificed for their country. “One gentleman was 99 years old and in WWII and Korea,” he said. “That’s someone to be in awe of, and more importantly, he showed up in uniform. I did 20 years in the Air Force and got to fly all over the world, in combat and got some amazing training. I am more humbled by the people who do the jobs every day — those who are serving now. I was happy to serve and proud to serve and thankful for the opportunity.” He says he’s enjoyed serving the Town of Prosper in a variety of ways since moving to Prosper in 2000. “We were here before there was a stop light.”. This was Johnson’s final CVC ceremony since it is his last year in office. This year’s keynote speaker was Navy Seal Ryan “Birdman” Parrott. Parrott enlisted in the U.S. Navy after watching the Twin Towers fall on 9/11, and he served eight years as a U.S. Navy Seal attached to Team Seven, completing three combat tours to Iraq before being assigned to Advanced Training Command as an Instructor. He is an author, public speaker, and founder of two non-profits benefiting veterans and first responders. “North Texas is a deeply patriotic community that is home to many exceptional veterans,” said Johnson in a press release. “As a 29-year Air Force veteran and POW, I understand firsthand how important it is for a community to support its men and women in uniform – past and present. That’s why I’m proud to host the CVC – it’s an opportunity for us to take time out of our busy schedules and thank our local veterans for their service and sacrifice to our Great Nation.”

In His Presence
Let’s Give Thanks By Bo Thompson
Warren Wiersbe tells about a ministerial student named Edward Spencer who lived in Evanston, Illinois. In addition to studying for the ministry, Edward was part of a life-saving squad. The year was 1860, and a ship ran aground on the shore of Lake Michigan near Evanston. Spencer, with little concern of his own safety, waded again and again into the frigid waters to rescue 17 passengers. As a result, his health was permanently damaged. Some years later he died. At his funeral, it was noted that not one of the people he rescued ever thanked him! What a sad commentary on human nature! So often, when a person gets what is needed they neglect to say, “Thank you!” Strange, the same thing happened to Jesus. The story is recorded for us in Luke 17:11-19. “Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, ‘Jesus, Master, have pity on us!’ “When he saw them, he said, ‘Go, show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went, they were cleansed. “One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan. “Jesus asked, ‘Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?’ Then he said to him, ‘Rise and go; your faith has made you well.’” There is a lot going on in this story. Yet, among other things, this story highlights three distinct reasons why we must never fail to give thanks. • God’s love is to provide. Leprosy is a dreadful disease. It affects a person physically (tumor-like swellings appear all over a person’s body), socially (lepers where not allowed around other people), and religiously (people in Jesus’ day believed leprosy was a punishment from God). Yet, when these men cried out for pity, for healing, they were cleansed immediately and completely. As then, so it is today … Our God is not too busy to provide, nor is He put off by our pitiful condition. God’s love is to provide what you need. He did it for these lepers; He does it for you and me! • God’s aim is to restore. He desires to restore us. Note Jesus’ proclamation, “Your faith has made you well.” This leper had already been healed physically. So, this must be a pronouncement of spiritual healing. God desires the same for us. When we, like the one leper, see Christ as Redeemer and put our faith in Him, spiritual healing is ours. Think of it — guilt removed, sin forgiven, and the prospect of all eternity in heaven with the Lord! We have a God who restores! He also desires to work through us to restore others. Have you ever wondered why Jesus instructed the ten to “Go, show yourselves to the priests”? It was evidently so the priests, hearing that Jesus completely and instantly cured these men, would have an irrefutable testimony to Jesus’ power and love … and come to Jesus for forgiveness. In the same way, our God aims not only to restore us; He also desires to use us to draw others to Himself! • God’s expectation is to praise. Can you hear the sadness in Jesus’ question, “Where are the other nine?” Our Lord desires immediate, audible, unrestrained, uninhibited thanksgiving in response to His gracious provision. Do you know what it is for God to provide for you … to restore you? If so, don’t be like the nine lepers, nor the 17 passengers shipwrecked on Lake Michigan! This is a season of thanksgiving. Let’s give thanks to the Lord! Bo Thompson is senior pastor at Rhea’s Mill Baptist Church, 5733 North Custer Road, McKinney, Texas.
