Town Matters By Mayor Ray Smith

The month of October is upon us and with it come cooler temperatures, shorter days, pumpkin-spiced drinks, beer festivals and reminders about keeping our families safe and secure. Here’s a little-known fact about the month of October. In ancient Rome, the calendar was only 10 months long, and when the Romans got around to naming the ten months, they apparently ran out of ideas for the last four months of the year. Known as the world’s first engineers, the Romans decided to use math for these months, and so September, October, November and December can be translated from Latin to mean Seventh, Eighth, Ninth and Tenth. Nothing against engineers, but sometimes their creativity can sometimes fall a little short. October has often been called public safety month, because National Night Out and Fire Prevention Week both occur this month. It is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and of course, we are reminded of the extra level of safety that we all need to exercise during Halloween. If your neighborhood or subdivision is holding a National Night Out event, be sure to register it with the Police Department by visiting the Town website and clicking on the Police Department page. Registration of your event alerts public safety personnel and members of the Town Council about the event, giving us the opportunity to add it to our visitation schedule. I always enjoy attending as many of these as I can, and I know other Council members do also. It gives us a chance to chat, meet one another, share

12 | October 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

stories, answer questions, and give updates on Town events and activities. These tremendous get-togethers also give our police and fire personnel the chance to meet residents where they live in a non-emergency setting. It’s always best to meet police officers and firefighters when not under the stress of an accident or fire. National Night Out gives us the perfect opportunity to do that. Fire Prevention Week starts on October 7 and is a time for us to check our homes for fire hazards, get our families ready for emergencies, and learn about how we can prevent these devastating tragedies. Statistics show that most people who die in fires do so as a result of smoke inhalation, rather than the flames. The heavy smoke produced by a fire can render a family helpless to save themselves or summon help. That’s why smoke alarms are so critical. These small devices constantly monitor the air for smoke and sound an unmistakable alarm when they detect rising levels of smoke. That gives families the time to get out of a building or home before it’s too late. I know you’ve heard it before but remember to check and replace the batteries on your smoke alarms often. Fire officials suggest changing the batteries every time you change your clocks in the spring and fall. Ladies should take the appropriate steps against breast cancer by submitting to regular exams and taking immediate action if warranted. Finally, please remember to drive carefully on Halloween night. The little ghosts, goblins and other characters are not watching out for you, so you have to watch out for them. Please take extra caution that evening.

PROSPER Magazine’s Business of the Month October The Gin opened in downtown Prosper one year ago in July. What is now a diamond in the dusty rough of a minimalistic and yet sentimental downtown, was once an old CPA Office with forgotten pieces of history and dirt floors. Mike Pettis and Joey Moi, who had taken over the preservation of Prosper’s Cotton Gin had big plans for the space. Once the dust settled and the vision was created, these two cousins set out to create another gathering space right next door – The Gin. The empty sound of times gone by is now a beating pulse of activity and is only the beginning of a sleepy downtown that has now come to life. It takes a handful of very talented people to create a vision and see it come to fruition. The inspiration to promote local growth and family comes from a generation of people that passed down their dream of a better life for their families by way of their entrepreneurial spirit. Marcia Pettis, Mike’s mother and co-owner of Pettis Moi Management, tells a family story about her great-grandfather who came to the United States on a boat from Italy and spoke only Italian. He brought with him 16 children, 9 of which died on their way here. Instead of being dropped off at Ellis Island, they were taken to Dago Hill in St. Louis where Italians, mainly from the northern Italian region of Lombardy, immigrated and settled in the area starting in the late 19th century. That heritage is significant and remains true today…the neighborhood that churned out baseball greats like Yogi Berra and Joe Garagiola, Sr., is home to a large number of locally renowned Italian-American restaurants, bakeries, grocery stores and salons. Just a couple of generations later and you have the same family spirit, building, growing and contributing to a community that people around the nation are flocking to be a part of. Contribution is a big part of why Mike is passionate about building dreams here in Prosper. When asked about his drive and what motivates him he answers without hesitation - his dad. His father, Rick Pettis, was a United States Marine. His patriotism is what drives his need to honor him, our military and first responders. You can see the American pride displayed all over The Gin, which serves as restaurant, bar, social porch and entertainment venue with enough history and memorabilia to add museum to its list of functions. If you haven’t had a chance to stop by for a visit, when you do, be sure and notice the 4’ x 8’ American flag donated by the Prosper Fire Department, made of decommissioned fire hose, and the door handle that is an actual fire nozzle from the original firehouse. You’ll see artwork honoring the victims of September 11th, Prosper themed artwork and a barn door Texas flag by local artist Bob Jameson.

The Gin There isn’t one element of the rustic contemporary décor of the Gin, that wasn’t fully thought out. LaDawn Collins, another local artist left her touch throughout the venue creating handmade lighting, shelving and countertops. The ambiance, with the open and cozy front room leading the way to the eclectic bar could rival any New England Pub or quaint uptown venue. Pass the bar and you’ll find a back-porch patio with sitting areas for groups of all sizes, a stone fireplace and a music garden with stage that showcases musical artists whose talents attract all types of listeners. The Gin is proud to host incredible talent like singer song-writer Grace Tyler, a Senior at Wakeland High School who is about to take Nashville by storm; Chris Mills whose style is along the same unique style of Darius Rucker; and locally grown here in Prosper, country crooner, Tanner Usrey. Who knows what the Gin will be in 5-10 years, but the word on the street is The Gin as we know it could morph into a music scene for up and coming artists like Nashville’s famous Blue Bird Café. Only time will tell what the future brings but one thing is certain, there are very cool things on our silo-filled horizon. Pettis is involved with The Prosper Ladies Association, Cornerstone and the Prosper Christmas Festival, which Pettis says will hopefully be coming back to downtown. In the meantime, The Gin hosted a Crawfish and Cornhole event that brought in about 1,500 people and raised over $20,000. “The Gin is lucky to have Bar Manager Ricky Drais who is a guru of craft cocktails and Assistant Manager James Mitchell, who sets up bands and entertainment,” says Pettis. He believes that what you know is important, but who you know is what makes a difference. And it’s the relationships with those talented people that have come together to work on this project and insure its success. Sometimes a vision comes to you quickly and others take years to manifest. No matter how you look at it, The Gin in downtown Prosper gives you a modern venue for entertainment with a rich history of patriotism and a bright future because of American Dreams that came true.

b Professional Black Belt Academy: A Legacy of Leaders l

By Jodie Brownd

Buddy Hudson is a legend living right here in our own backyard. The President of the Professional Blackbelt Association and the owner of Prosper’s popular Professional Black Belt Academy, he has made a significant impact globally in the world of Martial Arts for many years. Now, Buddy, his wife Pam and their son Jared, are dedicated to making an impact and building confident leaders in our Prosper and Celina communities. Buddy has over 35 years of teaching experience and is internationally known as a 9th Degree Blackbelt in Taekwando and American Karate. Pam and Jared are both Internationally Certified Black Belt Instructors and previous National Champions. Born on January 10th, 1962, Buddy Hudson grew up in rural Grapevine, Arkansas. He is the youngest of 6 children. At the age of 14 he began training Taiho-Ryu Karate and Jujitsu under Sensi Bo Hardy. Taiho-Ryu Karate is known as the “art of arresting” and emphasizes quickly subduing an opponent through Jujitsu and joint lock manipulation. He trained as a teen in this Japanese system of Karate before beginning his martial arts journey in American Karate and Taekwondo. After extensive training, Buddy received his black belt in 1979. It was at this time that he knew his martial arts journey would be lifelong. In 1981, he attended the University of Arkansas at Monticello where he began teaching part time to help supplement college expenses. Realizing that teaching martial arts was his passion, he began to teach professionally and soon received his National Instructors Certification. Buddy owned and operated his first full time professional academy in Pine Bluff, Arkansas until 1984 when he was asked to become the director of 16 | October 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

operations of the United States Taekwondo Federation located in Little Rock, Arkansas. The next few years of his life would prove to be nothing short of this country boy’s dream as winning Regional and National championships became Hudson’s passion. He trained with intense focus and dedication for competitions offered anywhere in the world, rising to the top as he competed in every major national competition offered in the U.S. winning National Fighting titles for 7 consecutive years. Buddy didn’t stop there. He competed internationally in several countries including Russia, Canada and Ireland. In 1986 he was asked to represent the United States in the 1987 World Games in Athens, Greece. 72 countries were represented and Hudson impressively topped off his competition run by becoming the Silver Medalist Winner in the 1987 World Championships. When Taekwondo became an introductory sport in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, Master Hudson continued his competition run as a National Finalist for the Olympic National Team. His kickboxing career spanned for 8 years fighting some of the best in the world including the great fighter Billy Blanks who is famous for building the Tae Bo empire. Buddy has also been recognized as one of the top children’s instructors

in the country producing one of the first Martial Arts Training Videos for children called Kicks for Kids. He was inducted into the master’s Hall of Fame and most recently recognized on the cover of the latest book Who’s Who in Martial Arts Pioneers and Masters. Master Hudson had come from a small rural community in Arkansas and lived an athlete’s dream. Having experienced the taste of a champion’s success, he pushes his students to live their full potential. Master Hudson says the most honored position is that of an instructor, one who passes knowledge, skills and moral values to the generation. He has turned out many national and international champions during his teaching career. Many have become professional instructors and have their own schools today.

age of 21. Jared is known as a natural leader and heads up the leadership program at The Professional Blackbelt Academy. The leadership program gives children of all ages the opportunity to learn about self-confidence, friendship and integrity through martial arts in their after-school program. Jared says that his faith has always been important to him and he believes it is important to be a good example and positive role model for the students, as well as to the people of his community. “He has always been a naturally gifted athlete, with an abundance of God given talent,” says his mother Pam. “But it is his heart and his love for helping others, especially in his age group and younger, as he understands the pressures and the struggles kids face today.” You need only sit down with Jared’s lifelong family friend Joseph DeNomie, who also coaches at the academy, to hear what Buddy’s family and legacy has done in his life. Master Hudson and Pam loved each other in such a way that was a positive influence for him. The closeness of the family and the fact that he was accepted into it with open arms at a very young age has created a brotherhood between the two young men that carries over into their mentoring.

Master Hudson now resides in Prosper, Texas with his wife Pam and their son Jared…where the family trio run their Professional Blackbelt Academy. The Hudson’s bring a unique support system to our community developing selfconfidence and self-esteem in our youth while also offering a blend of fitness and self-defense to our adult community. His favorite new title is that of “Pawpaw” as he enjoys his time with his grandsons, Owen and Carter, children of his son Brandon and wife Katie Hudson. After almost 40 years of teaching, he is retired and enjoys assisting his son Jared in teaching and winning National championships. “I believe a person’s legacy can be passed down through generations of teaching. I’m proud of all of my students and the opportunity I’ve had to teach and learn from each of them.” Passing that legacy down through generations is exactly what Buddy has done and it only takes a conversation with his son Jared to know that. Jared, who has won 3 national championships, as well as the prestigious Battle of Atlanta, has had many achievements in his life, even at the young

Celina native, Kayla Inman, the Program Director at the academy is also family to the Hudson’s. She always keeps a smile on the kids’ faces and parents know her as the “go-to girl,” to meet their needs and their answer questions. She coordinates all events and makes certain that each student is recognized for their individual successes at each event. Their teaching and involvement of these young people are changing the lives of their students by being the leaders they’ve been taught to be by the man they all respect and admire. Whether you or your child are interested in martial arts, or you’ve been looking for an opportunity for personal growth, there is a world of life lessons to learn through being a part of a family through a sports organization. The people of Prosper are very blessed to have such a legacy to learn from and a family that genuinely cares about sending people out into the world better for having been associated with them. You’ll find that and so much more at the Professional Black Belt Academy. They’re changing the world through martial arts, right here in Prosper, building leaders one blackbelt at a time. r

Setting the Bar High By Jodie Brownd

18 | October 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

Coach Erin Kauffman is entering her 6th year at Prosper High School as Head Volleyball Coach and Assistant Campus Coordinator for Athletics. She was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and graduated Magna cum Laude from Saint Louis University with a B.A. in Political Science. She was a setter and libero for the Billikens on the volleyball team at SLU and during her time there, was also President of the Atlantic 10 Student Athlete Advisory Committee. After graduation, she spent 4 years at Stephen F. Austin State University, as an Assistant Coach for the volleyball program, and graduated Summa cum Laude with a Master of Public Administration in 2008. Before landing at Prosper High School, she spent three years teaching Pre-AP World Geography, Sociology, and Government at Lovejoy High School, in addition to coaching volleyball, soccer and tennis. In Kauffman’s first years as Prosper Head Coach, she saw much success. Her Eagles advanced to the 4A State Title Match and WON the District 10-5A title. A few of her many awards include Dallas Morning News’ Volleyball Coach of the Year, VYPE magazine DFW Volleyball Coach of the Year, she won the SFASU Alumni Coaches Award, and was a recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association “Thirty Under 30” Award as well as having been voted District 10-5A Coach of the Year by fellow district coaches. Her husband Justin, who she says supports and inspires her, is a fellow educator and coach, teaching math and coaching boys’ basketball at Frisco Centennial. They reside in Prosper and have a 17-month-old son, Keegan, who is turning out to be quite the supportive coach’s kid. Coach Kauffman says that the people of Prosper inspire her as well. “These young ladies are proud to represent their town and when they play, the parents and administrators are there to back their team. When the whole student body shows up to cheer them on, I can’t help but be inspired to keep coaching.” As a coach, you wear a lot of hats and serve in many different roles to athletes. Coaches and educators spend more time in a day with their students than their parents do, so it’s important to be a good role model and serve as an extension of their parents. At this influential time in their lives, Coach Kauffman serves as an educator and coach, but the closeness and comradery built between fellow teammates and the staff while playing a sport sets the foundation for friendship and mentoring later in life as well.

Hide and Watch By Jodie Brownd

Indiana native and Prosper Head Cross Country Coach Jennifer Gegogeine is no quitter. As a matter of fact, she’s in her natural element taking on challenges. There are several philosophies that she feels contribute to her successes personally, and it is obvious that spills over into the success of her teams.

“There has to be a purpose as to why athletes do what they do. If you’re playing a sport without purpose, you’re just going through the motions.” Coach Gegogeine attended Purdue University and then transferred to Ball State, where she obtained her Sports Management Degree with a minor in Business in 1999. She went on to work for the Houston Rockets, Comets and Thunder Bears. She has coached at many schools and has made a difference in the lives of many athletes. The constant theme she teaches and has seen make a world of difference in the lives of students is BELIEF. Without the belief that you can do something you have no foundation. As a coach you can only do so much, and her athletes know that she will be there to inspire, teach and build them up, but they must do the work that will determine their destiny. “There has to be a purpose as to why athletes do what they do. If you’re playing a sport without purpose, you’re just going through the motions,” she says. Coach Gegogeine encourages her teams to never be satisfied in complacency. She has had life experiences of her own that have been 20 | October 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

crucial to her personal growth and have required her to move on to the next level to achieve her goals. Her belief systems were established at an early age. She ran her first half marathon (13 miles) as an 8th Grader and her first full marathon (26.2 miles) as a sophomore in college. Once she reached the 26-mile goal, she set her sights on the Boston Marathon. She set that goal because she was once told she couldn’t do it. She knew then, with her “hide and watch” mentality, that she just had to do it…it wasn’t an option not to. And yes, she did indeed accomplish her goal! In her first year as a coach, she and her team finished fourth at Regionals. Because the concept of believing and VISUALIZING yourself winning is so important, she had the team meet her at the finish line and WATCH from the finish line, so they could feel the experience. That same team that watched from the finish line and visualized themselves there, qualified for State the very next year winning 4th in their class. You may notice the Prosper Cross Country team sporting t-shirts that say YNU. The letters stand for “Y Not U?” Coach Gegogeine knows that making winning a reality by believing first, is a recipe for success and that if anyone is going to win, it will be the Prosper Eagles…so just hide and watch!!!!

Hoffman is currently in her 3rd year as the Head Director of the PHS Talonettes. She believes that being on drill team benefits young ladies in all sorts of different ways. “It teaches respect, accountability and good manners. Drill Team instills good listening skills, communication and motivation, even when you have to dig for it.” Most importantly she says, “It provides them with something to be passionate about and the Talonettes truly understand what it means to work hard for something that can be rewarding in the end.” She always tells her dancers that practice really does make perfect. Being a part of high school and college drill team has truly molded her into the person and coach that she is today. Her favorite part of leading the Talonettes is seeing the growth of not only each dancer as an individual, but seeing the team grow as a whole. She loves watching the skill level progress and says, “Dance is one of those sports that is a constant competition within yourself as an individual. You see others do it and it makes you want to do better. As dancers, we are selfmotivators and we are constantly using our teammates to help motivate and push ourselves, which in the end makes the team great as a team.” As the director, Hoffman is there to make the Talonettes look unified and clean. “I do the “drilling” if you will. However, the girls are the ones that really inspire each other to want to look good in their performances.” Ms. Hoffman’s philosophy regarding coaching is to make her dancers the best that they can be and to motivate them to find their full potential in all aspects of their life…whether in their school work, their talents, or working through challenges that they may face. She pushes her students until they find their greatness within themselves.

“I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself.” - Mikhail Baryshnikov Dancing Through Life By Jodie Brownd

Cali Hoffman grew up in Coppell, Texas. She became involved in dance when she was 11 years old at a small, one-room studio called the Coppell House of Dance. A friend had invited she and her sisters to try a jazz dance class at her studio. The sisters tried it, loved it and the rest is history! “We were all quite natural dancers, it just kind of clicked for us. High school drill is what really got me interested in furthering my career as a dancer in college and then into my adult life,” says Hoffman. Upon entering high school, she joined the diving team with her sisters because they could not be on drill team their freshman year. As a sophomore, she auditioned to become a Coppell Lariette…she made it that year and throughout the rest of her high school career.

After high school, Ms. Hoffman, along with her sisters, auditioned and became dancers for the famous Kilgore College Rangerettes. Kilgore College is a junior college which only provides a 2-year college education but is world renown for their Rangerettes, as they were the very first drill team created in 1940 by Gussie Nell Davis. The Rangerettes and their legacy are the reason that drill teams are so prevalent throughout the state of Texas. She says, “Being a part of the Rangerettes program presented many great opportunities for me and my association is the reason I am still so passionate about the sport today.” 22 | October 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

She recalls a time when she was a new dance teacher in Denton ISD, and in her first year of teaching dance class, she had the honor of teaching two male dancers in their sophomore year of high school. They were both freestyle hip hop dancers and made up a lot of their own B-Boy type moves, and their choreography was very flat and repetitive. However, she saw their potential and told both young men to get into a dance studio or sign up for dance conventions. She gave them all the insight as to why a studio/convention would be great for them and they looked at her and laughed. “The idea of being a male high school student and taking dance class outside of school was a crazy thought to them,” she says. But guess what those young men are doing now? They both finally got into studio dance and have taken multiple styles of dance including ballet and tap as well as their favorite – hip hop. They were both a part of the hip hop company performing team at their studio which led to them to dance conventions and competitions. One of them has now moved to L.A. to pursue his dance career and the other one has branched out into multiple dance studios in the Dallas area while continuing his career as a hip-hop performer. “I love knowing that I may have been their motivator to help them see their potential for greatness. They truly are amazing dancers now!” What Hoffman says she loves about Prosper is that the community is so welcoming and open to promoting and helping each other. “I’ve never seen such a love for a school district like the Prosper community gives. I am honored to be a teacher at Prosper High School and I am there to not only teach, but to serve my students in every way possible. High school is a huge part of a teenager’s life and as teachers we are here to motivate students to achieve goals, fight through challenges and encourage them to be great leaders as well.”

Staying Healthy on the Field

Michael Henry, Head Athletic Trainer for Prosper ISD, now makes his home in Prosper with his wife Lesley, and their children: Weston and Hailey. Upon graduation from Gainesville High School, he attended and graduated from University of North Texas with a degree in Kinesiology and is also a Licensed Athletic Trainer. He spent 12 years in Leander ISD, 9 as the Athletic Trainer of Vista Ridge High School and then 3 years as the Athletic Coordinator of Facilities and Operations. The two most important things you can have on the football field during Texas football season are an appropriately stocked medical bag and TRUST. Michael Henry knows that. He also knows that in his profession he has 3 customers: the football coach, the kids and their Mama’s. And if you’ve ever been in the hot seat under the Friday night lights, one might say that those come in no particular order of importance. The main job of the Athletic Trainer is to keep athletes healthy while being prepared. Mr. Henry tells his other trainers, “It’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.” It’s a philosophy that serves as a reminder which also happens to be his favorite quote from Larry McMurtry’s Lonesome Dove. Who wouldn’t feel a little bit better about someone caring for their child knowing they can quote Lonesome Dove? No one, that’s who. When asked about war stories on the field he recalls an athlete at Vista Ridge that was a star player but rolled his ankle before playoffs. He was given a two week break to rehab the ankle that the team needed desperately and at full capacity. He admired the kid for his perseverance, dedication and will to play. Mr. Henry had the last say and gave his okay after two weeks of intense rehab to suit him up for the game. During that game, the boy ran back a kickoff return to the 5-yard line in Lampasas, Texas. “It’s a memory you don’t forget with so much riding on one decision.”

That same young man went on to play football in the Air Force and reached out for advice and therapy on a then injured shoulder. He needed to be fully recovered to get through flight school. He took his rehab seriously, and with Henry’s guidance is now flying the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey for the U.S. Air Force. Henry says, “The best part about being an Athletic Trainer is the trust established by the athletes. They trust you because they know that your goal is to keep them safe on the field where they want to be. We work together as a team to make sure that happens.” The role of an athletic trainer is not only to get the injured athlete better as an athlete, but to keep them better for a healthier and better life in the future on and off the field.

Creating Outdoor Living Spaces for Year-Round Enjoyment Why do people stay cooped up inside when they can extend the livable portion of their property by creating awesome outdoor living spaces? It certainly isn’t difficult to build such “rooms” in the backyard, but it does take an appreciation for the “divide and conquer” approach. We take it for granted that our houses are divided into rooms, but the concept of having similar “outdoor living spaces” may sound odd, at first. The biggest obstacle standing in most people’s way is that it just doesn’t occur to them to divide up a yard so as to maximize their enjoyment of it. Not consciously, at least. Yet the more conscious we become of outdoor living spaces, the more we can tailor them to suit our own individual needs. Outdoor Living Spaces: Design Considerations Part of the beauty behind the concept of separate “rooms” in a house is that each unit is unique unto itself. Consequently, you can install a component in the kitchen that looks great there, without worrying that it would look out of place if viewed from the bedroom. The same is true for your outdoor living spaces. Having separate outdoor living spaces allows you to create minilandscape designs for each of them. Not that you shouldn’t still strive for unity across your landscape design, as a whole. But the more successful you are in physically separating one outdoor living space from another, the more flexibility you have to diversify without creating a hodgepodge effect. For instance, you may wish to include a storage bin for towels in the pool area. Such an element would be functional and would look fine there. But the problem is, you might not wish to view it from another part of the yard dedicated, say, to meditating in naturalistic surroundings. The answer: screen off the pool area with a tall hedge or fence, effectively creating a “room” separate from the rest of the pool area. Outdoor Living Spaces: “Building Blocks” Think of the structural components of outdoor living spaces in terms of their counterparts in indoor rooms: floor, walls and ceiling. Only for outdoor living spaces, the term, “structural” is used metaphorically. So 26 | October 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

much the better for you, as the “builder,” since it means there’s a lot less to worry about. Taking out a “wall” because you don’t like your initial choice won’t cause the “ceiling” to come crashing down on your head! Furthermore, think of the materials you need to assemble the floor, wall or ceiling of an outdoor living space as the “building blocks.” Here are some examples: For “floors”: grass, an alternative ground cover, such as clover, mulch, patios, decks For “walls”: formal hedges, lattice screens, fences, informal hedges For “ceilings”: arbors and pergolas, canopies of shade trees, decorative canvas canopies, awnings, lawn umbrellas You have a lot of leeway in your use of these building blocks. For example, the building blocks for a “wall” are interchangeable parts that you can mix and match with your budget and personality. Hedges may form two of your four walls, fencing the other two. If complete screening isn’t required, you can also define outdoor living spaces with lower vertical elements that may be more attractive/functional. For instance, raised beds, container gardens and furniture. A “ceiling” is optional for many outdoor living spaces, although it does create an added sense of enclosure that you may crave. Ceilings are necessary only for areas where staying dry/cool is a must. All projected outdoor living spaces already have “floors.” The only question will be, “Does the current floor do the best job of meeting my needs?” For example, maintenance is always a consideration, and you may decide, upon further reflection, that a grassy area you’ve been treading upon for years isn’t worth the upkeep. Outdoor Living Spaces: Function Many of your questions regarding which “building blocks” to use in assembling your outdoor living spaces will be answered if you determine the true function of the “room” in question. You need only look to the intended function of outdoor rooms to determine the “building blocks” needed to compose them. Keep both aesthetics and function in mind when setting up such spaces. Below are examples of outdoor rooms and how we put them together.

Outdoor Rooms: Pool Areas Let’s begin with outdoor rooms whose main function is to house a swimming pool. Landscaping around swimming pools presents specific challenges regarding safety, maintenance and privacy. You don’t want people slipping on anything, you don’t want to spend all your time cleaning up debris, and you don’t want the neighbors peering in at you. In selecting a “wall” to enclose the area, all of these considerations come into play. A strong argument can be made, then, for having a fence serve as the “wall” around a pool, rather than a hedge or a lattice screen. A tightly constructed fence will do the best job of screening out prying eyes. And because it has no leaves or needles to shed, there’s nothing to slip on, nothing to clean up. “Floors” in pool areas must be slip-resistant. “Ceilings” usually aren’t necessary: you’re going to get wet anyway, and sunbathing and swimming go hand-in-hand. Outdoor Rooms: Meditation Areas For meditation gardens, some of the concerns are the same, some different. Privacy is still very much an issue, as is maintenance. Most people find plants more relaxing than hardscape, so consider planting hedges to form the walls of such outdoor rooms. If you don’t want to wait for hedges to get tall enough to afford privacy, install lattice screens, instead. To satisfy your requirement for plants and provide further privacy, train vine plants to grow up the lattice. Climbing hydrangeas are perennial vines and an excellent choice for shady areas. You have more choices in the sun, including that ever-popular annual, the morning glory. For a floor, consider a combination of natural materials. You want something interesting into which to gaze, something with distinct textures. For instance, a rustic flagstone patio, with scotch moss planted in the cracks between the stones -- or creeping thyme, if you enjoy landscaping with fragrant plants. In meditation gardens, a ceiling may come in quite handy. Here, you’ll have to choose between aesthetics and functionality. A vine-covered arbor may be more inspiring to gaze up at than a lawn umbrella, but the latter will keep you -- and the books you may be reading -- dry. If you’d like something more solid than an umbrella, consider installing a pergola and covering it with fiberglass. Outdoor Rooms: Play Areas If you have kids who enjoy basketball, baseball, football, soccer, golf or just plain running around, set aside a special outdoor room just for them. You can’t beat a grass floor for these activities. Even better, artificial turf eliminates the maintenance! Or easily install a custom putting green or a custom basketball court! We do them all the time for clients!! While a ceiling won’t be necessary, walls are a must. You don’t want errant tosses rolling into the pool or wiping out those flowers you just planted in another portion of the yard. A solid fence will probably best serve the role of wall here, something that will easily stop a ball. Hedges are less effective, because balls either get through them or get lodged within them. By having to repeatedly dislodge balls stuck in a hedge, kids may end up wrecking the hedge.

HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS By: Rosh Ramanujam

Halloween can be such a fun time for children. At Kiddie Academy® of Prosper, we want your children to remember it as a time of fun with family and friends. There’s no trick to making your Halloween a treat. It simply takes planning and good parenting to ensure it’s a safe and healthy experience for everyone. Here are a few tips to help. Make sure your child has a safe costume. Since many Halloween activities take place after dark, you want to make sure your child is easy to see by motorists. Most store-bought costumes have reflective materials built in. If it doesn’t or the costume is homemade, you can add reflective tape to it. Children can also carry glow sticks or flashlights to make it easier to see them. The costume should fit properly so that it’s not so long that the child could trip and so that their vision isn’t obscured by the mask or a wig. And, of course, make sure the costume is flame resistant. Respect your child’s fear. For most children, Halloween means fun and candy. But with all the ghosts, witches and monsters going door to door, masks and costumes can be sources of fear and anxiety, especially for younger children. Masks and makeup obscure facial expressions, so it’s especially hard for toddlers to tell if someone is mean or friendly. If a child gets scared, don’t force them to confront their fear or shame them for their feelings. It could make the situation worse in the long run. Provide adult supervision. Whether it’s handling the jack-o’-lantern carving duty or going door to door with your trick-or-treater, being an involved Halloween parent helps ensure your child stays safe. Children under 12 should be accompanied on their rounds by an adult. Make sure your home is safe for Halloween visitors – well-lit, cleared of anything a child could trip over and that pets are kept indoors or on a leash. 28 | October 2018 WeArePROSPER.com

Make it a healthy Halloween. For many, the treats are the highlight of Halloween. But, as with most good things, moderation matters. If you can get your child to eat a good meal before trick-or-treating, it helps discourage them from filling up on candy. Have children wait until they get home before sorting and eating the candy. And don’t let them eat it all at once. Be respectful of food allergies, both for your children and others. Look through your child’s candy for anything they’re allergic to. And for the treats at your house, think about passing out non-candy treats such as coloring books to any visitors you might have who have allergies. Making good choices at Halloween mirrors our core philosophy at Kiddie Academy of Prosper. We empower your children to make great choices by giving them opportunities throughout their day. We’ll engage your child by turning moments of interaction at home and school into key moments of learning. Maintaining this consistency from the classroom to the playground and your home will have a positive impact on their life. I’m Rosh R, the owner of Kiddie Academy of Prosper, located at 650 North Preston Road. We are excited to open our brand-new, state-of-the-art academy in the Fall of 2018 in the Prosper community. We serve children ages 6 weeks through 12 years. The educational programs at Kiddie Academy of Prosper emphasize continuous, open communication between teachers and parents concerning each child’s development. But most importantly, we learn while we’re having fun. We invite children to embark on the Kiddie Academy journey that will enable them to learn and grow socially, physically and intellectually.
