Creating a Stable Back-to-School Routine for Children If there’s one thing parents know, it’s children thrive on routines. When it seems like everything is changing, routines can create stability. “When children know what to expect, they don’t feel powerless and out of control,” said Rashelle Chase from KinderCare Learning Centers’ education team. “Children like to plan just as much as adults do. When they know what will happen next, they can set their expectations.” Routines can also help children regulate their emotions – and avoid meltdowns or outbursts – because their days follow a pattern and are predictable. There’s typically a sense of comfort in knowing what comes next. Whether your child’s back-to-school routine includes actually going to school or distance learning, consider these tips to help create a sense of stability. SET A SCHEDULE Talk with your child about his or her school day and how it will be different. Work together to come up with ways you can both ease into the new routine, whether your child is attending school part time, learning at home or going to a childcare center or program. Remember, little things can help create a sense of routine and stability. Even if your child is learning at home and could stay in pajamas all day, something as small as getting dressed in school clothes and brushing teeth before sitting down for lessons can signal it’s time to study. BE FLEXIBLE The things that make school fun – whatever that may be for your child – aren’t at home. However, there are some things you can do at home, like eat a snack while studying or play with toys, that you cannot do at school that make learning more enjoyable. Be sure to build breaks into your 8 | WeAreProsper.com

child’s day. Knowing there will be something fun after the next lesson can give your child something to look forward to and help him or her settle down to complete the task at hand. Plus, those breaks can be an opportunity for parents to get some work done, too. Talk with your child and with his or her teachers: Perhaps those 30 minutes of reading don’t have to be done midmorning when your child is restless. Instead, maybe your family could do 30 minutes of reading before bed when your child is calmer. TALK IT OUT Nearly everyone is experiencing strong emotions right now whether it’s in reaction to an abnormal start to the school year or other factors that impact daily life. The difference is adults can contextualize a situation and adjust their reactions. Children haven’t yet mastered those skills, so they react based on whatever nugget of information they have. Home is a safe place for most children, which means they know they can express their feelings freely. That may mean slamming laptops or books down in frustration, yelling or using hurtful words. Your child might be upset because he or she doesn’t understand the schoolwork or might be afraid for safety or the safety of loved ones during these uncertain times. Talk with your child about his or her feelings and work together to find healthy ways to express those emotions, like taking three deep breaths or using a physical activity to vent, instead of keeping those feelings pent-up inside. Difference and change don’t have to mean chaos and uncertainty. With a bit of thought and a stable routine, parents can help their children have an enjoyable, productive school year. Find more tips for creating stable routines for children at kindercare.com.

From the Desk of Mayor Ray Smith

Prosper Celebrates Police Week, Remembers 9/11 and Celebrates Labor Day this Month By Mayor Ray Smith

Photos by Jason Reynolds - Cedarbrook Media Group

There are, unfortunately, very few things that we can still point to as “normal” these days. Among the most obvious of these, in my opinion, is the absence of the highly anticipatory, and sometime anxiety laden, back-to-school period during those four to six weeks when summer approaches its end.

During this month we also remember the men, women, and children we lost on 9/11. Our remembrances of that tragic day will be subdued as well, although the memory of these innocent victims, along with the brave men and women first responders, will nevertheless burn brightly in our hearts.

I can vividly remember, with great fondness, the excited anticipation of getting ready for the new school year. All of the kids in the neighborhood would gather in little groups and chat about nothing in particular. It was just our way of relieving the pressure of a new grade, a new teacher, and maybe some new classmates. I don’t think things changed much over the course of years during that short but exhilarating back-to-school season.

September also provides us an opportunity to celebrate Police Week, when we set aside time to honor our police officers and thank them for their courage, bravery, and service to our residents. Some residents have championed the idea of “Light our Town Blue” to publicly proclaim their admiration for our police officers. Some residents will place blue bulbs in their outdoor fixtures in support of the campaign. The school district is also planning on adding a blue tinge to some of their more prominent lights.

That was not the case this year, of course. While some schools are providing in-person instruction, others are not, and still others are using some hybrid of the two. The uncertainty that marked this summer essentially diminished the back-to-school excitement that we all looked forward to. The pandemic has certainly altered, delayed, or transformed many of the traditions that we have celebrated from year to year. There are, however, several September traditions that we will keep, even if we manifest them in slightly different ways. Every September we celebrate Labor Day with cookouts and relaxation, and while this year we will confine our cookouts and relaxation to our backyards with our families, we will still enjoy the day set aside for working people everywhere.

10 | WeAreProsper.com

The Town, at the request of a number of residents, will participate by lighting the Town Hall cupola and the entry monument sign on Preston Road with blue lights. We are a very fortunate community in many ways, but most especially because our police officers truly take our Town motto to heart – our police officers know that Prosper is a place where everyone matters, and they live that motto every day. In addition to the September observance of Police Week, we will also be celebrating Fire Prevention Month in October, highlighting the work of our firefighter/paramedics. Prosper’s first responders are a critically important part of our commitment to serve and protect, and we are tremendously proud of the men and women who fill the ranks of the Fire and Police Departments.

Courageous Leaders Prosper ISD is in full swing and I am so proud of our students, staff, and parents. The ability for us all to join forces and come together for the betterment of our school community is inspiring. As we settle into the new school year there will be many twists and turns as we continue to navigate the impact of COVID-19. The one thing I have faith in is our students and staff. They continue to step up to the challenge and embrace obstacles as opportunities. They can see the future ahead and I encourage each of you to go boldly into the future to model resiliency, problem-solving, and determination. Next year we will open our 13th elementary school located in The Summit subdivision on the west side of our district. The process that our construction team, architects, and leaders go through during the build of a school is a process that should be emulated in life. It is inevitable that challenges will come throughout the process, but I see a team that takes each step and they continue to pivot, take a new direction, and persevere throughout the entire process until a near-perfect facility is ready to educate the future of our community. No matter what your role is in our community, you are a leader. Leaders must have the courage and be strong even when strength seems to be impossible. The courageous leader does not always have all of the answers but the one thing that courageous leaders have in common is the ability to connect and work together as a team. One of my favorite quotes from Maya Angelou is the following, “Having courage does not mean that we are unafraid. Having courage and showing courage means we face our fears. We are able to say, “I have fallen, but I will get up.” What a beautiful and meaningful way to capture the spirit of the current moment in Prosper ISD. My challenge to each of you is to find a way to lead and embrace courage for our students, staff, and community. We become stronger together because… We are Prosper! We are one! Prosper Community Library’s Fall Programming to Go Completely Virtual

F announcing that its fall program will be completely virtual with a ittingly for these unusual times, the Prosper Community Library is

virtual kickoff on Monday, August 31, according to Director of Library Services Leslie Scott. “We have over 100 virtual programs for all ages and we believe there is something fun, educational, and entertaining for most everyone,” she said. “No matter the age or interest, the fall will be full of programming that everyone will enjoy and benefit from.” Examples of the wide diversity in programming includes Babies and Books, Preschool Storytime, and Bored, Not Bored with Oliver for young children. Grade schoolers will surely enjoy highly entertaining programs such as Draw with Me, I Love that Series, and Illustrated By. A few past favorites such as Harry Potter Club and Anime will return in new formats. Teens will likely turn virtual cartwheels over the Tween/Teen program, and families will share their enjoyment of Recipes & Reading. Several fall programs are geared specifically to adults such as Yoga in the Stacks, Repurposed Books, and Crochet with Kat. An American Sign Language interpreter will be imbedded into some children’s programs, representing a first for Prosper. “I am especially proud of programs like Bilingual Story Time and Lil Yogi. We have such a passionate staff and they were thrilled to share their talents and expertise with our community.” All virtual programs will be posted to the library’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVs6i6TYSCry9p8aeAcX5fA. 20 | WeAreProsper.com

Reminders of each week’s events will be posted on the library’s Facebook and Instagram accounts on Sundays. A search for Prosper Community Library on Facebook and Prosper Library on Instagram will lead to informational pages on those social media platforms. Calls for information can be made to (972) 569-1185. There are no live or ticketed events, making them available any time after their initial posting. This facilitates watching the programming at convenient times as well as repeat viewing. Library membership is not required to watch and enjoy any of the programs. For those with a membership, the library’s To Go Service continues to be very successful and checking out items that way remains. Members can also take advantage of Lynda.com, Mango Languages, and Overdrive available via the library’s web page, https://www.prospertx.gov/ residents/library/. There is currently no change to the library’s operational hours. Patrons are welcome on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from noon to 6:00pm and Saturdays from 10:00am to 2:00pm. These hours are subject to change and the library is making every effort to expand them when appropriate. The library is located at 200 S. Main. “We are incredibly proud of all the different programs we are creating for our community,” added Scott. “We strive to think outside the traditional ways of offering library services, and we hope the community takes advantage of our offerings. Please be sure to check us out!”

There are few things in life more valuable than your health. Fortunately, there’s plenty each of us can do to work toward optimum wellness. Eat right. Exercise. Get plenty of rest. Yet even the most proactive wellness plan can’t prevent everything. When that's the case, you need a trusted holistic health provider like Kylie Bunner & Mandy Cotten. These nurse practitioners are in the quality of life business. For years now, they’ve made a dramatic impact on the quality of life of men and women—in the Arlington and Irving areas and now in our very own Prosper -- through optimizing hormone levels with bioidentical hormone pellets placed under their skin. The Institute for Hormonal Balance staff strives to provide individualized treatment plans for patients in multiple stages of life—men and women alike. But bioidentical hormone replacement is only one of the ways they do this. “Patients need a trusted provider that can utilize the best of holistic and traditional medicine to best meet their individual needs” Kylie said. “An annual wellness exam is a great time to go over any questions you have with your provider, talk about any symptoms you’re experiencing, and make sure your body is operating the way it should. We’re not concerned merely with longevity, but with living life to its fullest potential.”” If hormone imbalance is an issue, the team may discuss the BioTE method of hormone optimization which includes balancing estrogen, testosterone, thyroid, and vitamin status so they work together in the body to establish optimal health. “Our hormones are one of the most important regulatory systems embedded in our bodies”, Mandy said. “They act as messengers, designed to interact with specific target cells and organs and provoke a change or result. As we age, hormone production changes, and hormonal imbalance can occur. Unbalanced hormones can have a variety of side effects and symptoms, making balanced hormones essential for mental health and disease prevention, as we age,” Mandy explained. The Institute for Hormonal Balance also offers a full menu of aesthetic services, including Botox, dermal fillers, IV therapy, and weight management options, so you can look as good as you feel. “SlimShots are a promising weight management support tool that combines a number of vitamins and nutrients to give your body the extra help it needs to burn fat, balance hormones, and increase energy levels,” Kylie said. The providers at the Institute for Hormonal Balance can also assist you in finding the best nutraceuticals to enhance your health status. It is so overwhelming to walk down the aisle at the vitamin shop and try to determine which supplements you need and which you do not. The high-quality nutraceuticals offered at the Institute and the knowledge surrounding them will surely help you to feel your best. One of the best ways to saturate the body with vitamins to boost energy and immune system function is with IV Therapy, such as a Myers’ Cocktail, one of the many IV therapy options offered at the Institute. If you want to find a passionate provider that will help you navigate through the muddy waters of nutrient and hormonal imbalance and focus on your vitality and quality of life, look no further than Kylie Bunner & Mandy Cotten at the Institute for Hormonal Balance. Currently accepting new patients.

Prosper Voters Faced with Additional Choices on November 3

A full slate of local, school, county, state, and national political races will be decided on November 3 while voters in Prosper will have a few additional decisions to make at the ballot box.

developing streets, roads, bridges, and intersections within Prosper along with related drainage improvements, utility relocations, landscaping, curbs, sidewalks, and other improvements.

Receiving Town Council approval during the August 11 meeting, Prosper voters will go to the polls on Election Day and elect Council representatives for Places 3 and 5; decide whether or not to approve three propositions for bond-financed projects; and whether or not to allow the retail sale of liquor at package stores and in restaurants.

A Citizens Bond Advisory Committee, chaired by David Bristol, met eight times during the spring and summer and presented their unanimous recommendations to the Town Council last month, recommending that Council members place the three propositions on the November ballot.

The election for Town Council members was originally scheduled for May 2 but because of the coronavirus pandemic was postponed, eventually being added to the November 3 ballot. Running unopposed in Place 3 is Amy Bartley, while Place 5 incumbent Jeff Hodges is opposed by Steve Thomas. Also specific to Prosper voters is a choice on whether or not to approve the expenditure of $210 million in Capital Improvement Project bonds divided into three individual propositions. Proposition A authorizes the issuance of $30,000,000 for public safety facilities, consisting of fire stations, an emergency operations center, a public safety training facility, and administrative facilities. Proposition B provides for the issuance of $30,000,000 for equipping parks, trails, and recreational facilities, as well as the acquisition of land and interests in the land for these purposes. Proposition C, meanwhile, authorizes the issuance of $150,000,000 for constructing, improving, extending, expanding, upgrading, and

22 | WeAreProsper.com

Eligible voters can vote for or against each of the three propositions separately but cannot vote for or designate individual projects included in each proposition. Finally, Prosper voters will vote in a special local option election that would legalize the sale of all alcoholic beverages for off-premise consumption only, as well as legalizing the sale of mixed drinks in restaurants by those that hold a food and beverage certificate. The special local option election was added to the November ballot as a result of two petitions that included the signatures of at least 35 percent of the number of Prosper residents who voted in the last gubernatorial election. 5 Seasonal DIY Home Improvement Projects T

he calendar pages may be turning fast, but it’s not too late to do some work around the house. Now is the time to wrap up home improvement projects before the weather turns too cold. Consider these five easy DIY tasks that can set you up for a warm, safe and pest-free fall: PERFORM ROUTINE HVAC MAINTENANCE Heating and cooling systems need regular service to operate at peak efficiency. Some tasks are best left to the pros, but there is plenty you can do on your own to minimize expenses and ensure your unit maintains its performance level. With the breaker and gas off, wipe the exterior of your furnace with a damp rag then remove the access door and vacuum the burners, base and blower compartment. Remove and clean the blower with a vacuum and small brush then use a drinking straw to blow dust off the pilot. Also inspect the flame sensor, drive belt and air filter, and clean or replace as needed.

AIR SEAL DRAFTY AREAS The gaps around windows and door frames give unwanted air an open invitation into a home. However, you can quickly and easily block the flow of air for greater comfort and lower energy bills. If the doors and windows are already finished, start by removing the trim. Prep the area by removing dust and debris. Using a quality sealant like Great Stuff Window & Door Insulating Foam Sealant, apply the foam to fill in about 50% of the gap around the window or door and framework, allowing room for the foam to expand. Wipe away imperfections and let sit 10-15 minutes until it’s no longer tacky. Gently press the expanded foam into the gap using a putty knife. CHECK FOR DAMAGE TO HARDSCAPING Walkways, patios and decks are all susceptible to wear that can lead to tripping hazards or allow rain, snow and ice to seep in and create larger problems. Take time to thoroughly assess these hardscape features and identify issues like loose stones and cracks in concrete that need repairs. Securing materials, filling cracks and patching problem areas can help prevent further damage during the colder months while restoring aesthetic appeal.

Local Expertise Innovative Approach Real Integrity INSPECT YOUR HOME’S EXTERIOR Many elements of your home serve essential roles in protecting your safety, regulating your home’s efficiency and preventing damage. It’s important to regularly check your roof for signs it needs repaired, such as missing or cracked shingles or noticeable sagging. Gutters can also accumulate a great deal of debris from falling leaves. Clearing these before cooler temperatures set in can help ensure rain has a clear path away from your house, protecting the walls and foundation. Also pay attention to other elements like paint that may require periodic updates to maintain its protective function. ELIMINATE ENTRY POINTS FOR PESTS When temperatures start dropping, you’re likely to see some movement with creatures who want to enjoy the comfort of your home. Make it clear they’re not welcome by sealing up places they may be creeping in. A solution like Great Stuff Pestblock Insulating Foam Sealant lets you fill gaps and openings with a quick bead of foam. If a rodent has an established pathway, try using a combination of steel wool and the foam to deter it from gnawing through the barrier.

Understanding the Basics of Landscaping

More than creativity, landscaping requires knowledge in terms of the different elements and principles that govern them. This is basically important to ensure that your landscaped design possesses beauty, symmetry, and harmony—making your garden or your yard simply astonishing to look at. Elements There are actually five elements that any landscaper must know when it comes to landscaping design. These include form, line, color, scale, and texture. An object is said to have a form when it has a shape and a structure. When we talk about landscaping, it refers to the contours of a tree or the structure of the branches. Usually, forms of shrubs are indicated by their growth, trees by their branches. It is the line that directs the movements of the eyes. Lines, in landscaping, guide viewers what areas they must look at. A landscaper must be able to take advantage of this element since it is this that captures a person’s attention to a particular design, object, or space. It is also the line that helps people notice the unrelated items in your design that create imbalance. The power of color lies in its ability to convey varying emotions, personalities, and moods of your landscape. So far, there are three properties that govern colors. These include value, hue, and intensity. When we speak of value, we refer to the brightness of an object. Hues stress the color’s strength while intensity marks the dullness or the brightness of an element. The relationship between the overall environment and a specific item is measured through scaling. Landscaping design employs scaling in order to identify and infer the interrelationship of adjacent elements. The quality of the surface of an object is referred to as texture and is 26 | WeAreProsper.com

identified by the way we feel when we touch an object. Almost all elements in landscaping design have varying and sometimes distinct texture. The smoothness of a rock, the roughness of a tree bark, the shiny surface of a leaf—everything determines what texture is. Principles Along with these elements are the different principles that govern any landscaping design. Unity means developing a central theme in your design that can promote symmetry and relatedness among all elements present in your garden. Balance, on the other hand, defines the quality or the sense of visual symmetry in an asymmetrical area. Proportion defines the relationship whether between the different elements present in a design or between objects to the overall all landscaping design. For example, a large tree may not be proportional to a small garden, but it will be if planted in a park. Emphasis, sometimes called focalization, aids the eyes to a prominent area in your landscape. A massive architectural structure in your backyard, for one, can already create emphasis. Sequence, meanwhile, dictates the flow of your landscaped design. The progression of size, color, and form, albeit gradual, can already control the principle of transition. This may consist of planting rows of trees with leaves whose texture ranges from coarse to simply smooth. Like a beat that carries away a person to wide array of different emotions and movements, rhythm in landscaping guides a person’s eye to the different parts of the design. Repetition in terms of texture, shape, scheme, form, or line produces rhythm. If implemented properly, rhythm can remove the monotony as well as confusion in your landscaping design. Hopefully, with all these knowledge and theories guiding you in your landscaping plan, you can come up with something that will practically serve the purpose of your design: to create an effective visual impact to the viewers. If that doesn’t help you well perhaps consider hiring a Pro! Chances are they would be terrible at your job! Ha Ha!

Question: Jimmie, I know “landscaping” refers to plants, fences, and the like. But is there a core idea behind landscaping and landscape design? Thank you for your time, my wife and I make it a point to read all your columns and we find them very informative. - Richard B. in Prosper Answer: Hi Richard! Landscaping novices and buyers of new homes can profit from a practical, working definition of “landscaping.” By definition, to be properly said to be “landscaping” a property, you must be making home improvements on that property’s grounds -- either in a practical or in an aesthetic way. In an extended sense, everything on your property that stands outside of the home itself is part of a property’s landscaping. Simply put, if you can see an object, then it is affecting the overall aesthetics of the grounds of a property -- i.e., its landscaping! Question: Jimmie, I don’t have a lot of time to maintain a landscape design, so I’m going to plant perennials rather than annuals. After all, they come up every year, right? Is this a sound strategy for beginners at landscape design? – Melanie P. in Prosper Answer: Hi Melanie! Since perennials come up every year, beginners sometimes wonder if they don’t require care. Could perennials be the easy answer for the on-the-go crowd that still wants to grow plants? Not really. Perennials do require care. If you choose to grow perennials, choose perennials for the right reasons -- and labor savings is not one of them! It is not even true that perennials are guaranteed to come up every year. If they are not maintained properly, you can very easily lose some perennials. Don’t think perennials are the beginner’s “easy way out”! And keep in mind, most great landscapes have perennials very strategically placed among either Annuals or Evergreen plants or you will have a big mass of nothing all winter. Perennials are great hen used correctly in a design!
