6 Fall is our favorite season of the year! We love everything about it…the bright sunny days, the crisp cool nights, the start of a new school year, the beginning of hunting season, the colors, the fragrances and the décor. October is the best month of the Season…Fall Sports are in full swing, the trees are starting to turn, the mums are blooming, the front porches sport their Harvest decorations, pumpkin farms are open, and the Harvest moon hangs above. It is a month of fun filled activity, and symbolizes not only the change of Season from Summer to Fall, but marks the beginning of the wonderful family gatherings of the Holiday Season. We hope you and your families are able to enjoy the October celebrations in our community.

Healthy Solutions by Dr. Jon Thomas
One of the most common medical problems in the general population is high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.
Approximately 30% of the U.S. population has high blood pressure. A normal blood pressure for most people is less than 120 (systolic) over 80 (diastolic) or 120/80 mm Hg. Family Physicians will diagnose high blood pressure in a patient if the blood pressure has been greater than 140/90 for two or more measurements at least two weeks apart. High blood pressure is associated with aging, weight gain, high dietary salt intake, alcohol intake, tobacco use, high cholesterol, physical inactivity, depression, and vitamin D deficiency. High blood pressure can be caused by certain medications, and may indicate underlying infection or illness. Untreated high blood pressure is responsible for approximately 35% of all heart attacks and strokes, 49% of all diagnoses of heart failure, and 24% of all premature deaths. Uncontrolled high blood pressure also causes disease of the eyes and kidneys, and may lead to several life threating-emergencies if left untreated.

High blood pressure can be reduced by several lifestyle modifications, including weight loss, reducing dietary salt intake, reducing alcohol intake, quitting smoking, and starting medications for blood pressure. Ask your doctor which lifestyle modifications are necessary for your situation and if medication is indicated. Be sure to have your blood pressure checked at least once every one to two years during your periodic well exam. For patients on medication for high blood pressure, the goal measurement is less than 140/90. Your doctor may have you purchase a home blood pressure monitor and record a log of your blood pressure readings in between visits. Screening for and treating high blood pressure has many health benefits. Call the office of Dr. Jon Thomas at 972-347-5778 to schedule your appointment today! Flu shots are also available now at the office. Visit us on the web at www.ProsperFamilyDoctor.com.

Prosper Homecoming events are in full swing this month! Speaking of homecomings, this is a great time to think about having your pet microchipped so that they may have a safe “homecoming” if they are ever lost! We have “Good Samaritans” bring lost pets to our clinic on a weekly basis. 1 in 3 pets goes missing during it’s lifetime, and without proper ID, 90% never return home. A microchip for dogs and cats gives the best protection with a permanent ID that can never be removed or become impossible to read. Microchipping is a simple procedure. A veterinarian injects a microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, beneath the surface of the skin between the shoulder blades. The process is similar to a routine shot, takes only a few minutes, and your pet will not react any more than he would to a vaccination. A microchip is a permanent pet ID. The microchip itself has no internal energy source, so it will last the life of your pet. It is read by passing a microchip scanner over the pets shoulder blades. The scanner emits a low radio frequency that provides the power necessary to transmit the microchips unique cat or dog ID code and positively identify the pet. If your pet gets lost and is taken to an animal shelter or veterinarian, they will scan the microchip to read its ID code. This is the number used to identify the pet and retrieve your contact information, which is used to contact and reunite you with your pet. Contact us at Prosper Pet Clinic for more information about microchipping your pet or to schedule an appointment to have your pet microchipped!

EAGLE FOOTBALL Homecoming in Prosper is a time when the community comes together to honor our former PHS students, and celebrate the current football season. The week of Homecoming is known as Spirit Week, students dress up each day in different themed outfits to show their school spirit. Wednesday evening is the big Homecoming parade that has representatives from all school and community clubs and organizations, followed by a huge community pep rally. Our players really look forward to the parade when they get to see the Town of Prosper’s awesome support of their Eagles! This is a time when the whole town comes together and not only celebrates the football season, but also celebrates being from Prosper. It’s an indescribable feeling when you see how many people come to see the Homecoming parade and show their Prosper Pride.
The day of the big game, throughout the halls of Prosper High School you will see our Varsity football players and coaches wearing decorated boxer shorts over jeans. This long standing tradition signifies the fun of the day for our team, prior to the main event that evening when the boys get down to business. The crowds are their largest at Eagle Stadium for the Homecoming football game. It’s a very exciting time and the energy can be felt all around. The team’s main goal that night is to put a winning number up on that scoreboard for the entire town to see. It’s an important win not only for the team, but also for PHS students and Alumni. The Homecoming game is the coming together of a community that says we are Prosper and we love our Eagles, while their players dedicate their game to the Town of Prosper and play with large hearts.
EAGLE CHEER In order to get the town of Prosper prepped to beat the Titans of Frisco Centennial, Prosper Cheerleaders will be decorating the town with green and silver Mylar streamers. This is a tradition cheerleaders take pride in doing. On Wednesday, Oct. 3rd, the annual Homecoming parade will take to the streets of Prosper. The Varsity cheerleaders will continue the tradition of riding the float with the Varsity players followed by a trailer of Prosper JV and Freshmen cheerleading squads. Once at the high school steps, the cheerleaders will lead a pep rally for the football players focused on the theme, Light the Fire… Eagle Pride. Performing with the PHS Cheerleaders will be the RMS Cheerleaders, Talonettes, Band, Drum Line, etc. It should be a wonderful event!
On Thursday, Oct. 4th, the Freshmen cheerleaders will be cheering on a victory of our Freshman football teams. Those games start at 5:30 and 7:00 pm. The Junior Varsity cheerleaders will be traveling to Frisco Centennial to cheer on our Sophomore and Junior Varsity football teams. Go Eagles! Please come support our teams. On Friday, Oct. 5th the homecoming pep rally will make a memory for all who come. Mr. Wright will acknowledge past Prosper graduates, there will be lots of performances by students, the cheerleaders will have the arena decorated in a Light the Fire way, and perform to a new level of success. Finally, the Friday night homecoming game will be one to remember. Please come out and support our Eagles.
EAGLE TALONETTES The Prosper High School Talonettes, a.k.a The Sweethearts of Prosper High School are one of the most dedicated, hardworking organizations on the campus. They exemplify the utmost school spirit at all times. They perform at all Pep Rallies and at halftime for our Varsity Football Team. They decorate lockers, provide “goodie bags”, make posters and show their support each week for the mighty Eagle Football Team. They are extremely dedicated young ladies. They practice before school every day and many times after school and on weekends. In addition to all the school functions they also
compete in outside competitions. They have brought home many outstanding awards for their individual and team performances and have received high honors for their representation of PHS! They also host clinics for the girls at the elementary and junior high level that aspire to one day join the team! Their leadership, high standards, and determination have earned these girls the respect of their fellow classmates and administration. We are very proud of our Talonettes! Please come out and support your Sweethearts, The Prosper Talonettes and show your Eagle Pride!! live-prosper.com | 11

MARCHING BAND AND COLOR GUARD The band and color guard started preparing for the season back on August 1st when we started meeting together. We started by practicing basic marching fundamentals and learning the music to this year’s competition show which is called “Italiano”. By the 2nd week of August, we had started to learn the actual drill to the music. The show is a work in progress and every week, we perform a little more marching drill until eventually, we’re performing the entire show. Our goal is to perform the show in its entirety at the Homecoming game on October 5th!
North Drumline Contest. Two weeks later, the entire band will perform in competition the day after Homecoming, October 6, at the Plano East Marching Invitational at Clark Stadium in Plano. The following week Saturday, October 13, the band will perform in what we consider our biggest contest of the marching season, the UIL Marching Contest, again at Clark Stadium in Plano. Our final marching competition of the season will be on October 20 at the Wylie Marching Competition where we’ll compete against several 4A and 5A high school bands from the surrounding area.
In addition to performing during halftime at every PHS varsity football game, the band also participates in several marching competitions. The PHS drumline took the field in competition for the first time this season on September 22 when they performed at the McKinney
Following our last marching competition, the band will start performing this year’s “Spirit Show” during football game halftimes. Last year’s show was a huge hit and we’re looking forward to keeping the crowd entertained again this year.

I was most recently at Tyler Chapel Hill ISD where I served as high school principal. I have been married to my wife Lesli for 26 years. Our daughters are Juniors at PHS, and Brooke is involved in Volleyball and Track, while Brittany is involved in Volleyball and UIL Academics. Prosper ISD upholds a standard of excellence. I am excited about the opportunity to serve the community in a way that upholds tradition and continues to establish PHS as a premier High School both in Texas and around the Nation. Our 2012 – 2013 theme is WE ARE FAMILY… DREAM BIG! TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK!
MARJORY EATON
GERALD PARR Assistant Principal
It is an honor and privilege to serve as an Assistant Principal of Student Services at PHS. I am beginning my 25th year in education. Prosper ISD has everything that I have looked for in a school district. The appealing components consist of multidisciplinary interactions, professional learning communities, community outreach opportunities, and a diverse student population. I have three adult children. My oldest is serving as a Firefighter/Paramedic, my middle child is an elementary school bilingual teacher, and my youngest is beginning her 3rd year at the University of Houston with aspirations of becoming a Veterinarian. I am very proud of all of their accomplishments.
I am married to my lovely wife Tina. We have three sons, Zachary (20), Gatlin (16), and Lawson (9). I have been in Education for over 25 years and I am proud to begin my second year in PISD. What a perfect time to become part of this community. Prosper offers a true home town feel, authentic school pride, and a commitment to excellence. At PHS, students are encouraged to build strong academic foundations, allowed the freedom to explore electives and develop unique talents and interests. We hope this allows students to express their potential as innovators, critical thinkers, and collaborators through challenging, engaging & diverse learning experiences in vital partnership with our community.
