The month of December means different things to different people, but a common theme you will find is this…December marks the beginning of the Holiday Season and what most consider being the most wonderful time of the year! Our family is no different. In fact, for us, the Holiday Season is our favorite time of year. As soon as the Thanksgiving leftovers are put away, we head up to the attic to gather the endless boxes of Christmas decorations. We crank up the Christmas music, make hot cocoa and turn our home into a winter wonderland. One of my favorite moments is when we unpack the decorations on the kitchen island, and watch the kids pick different pieces up and reminisce about why they love this one, what they remember about that one or where the perfect place is for each one. It is amazing how even the youngest ones remember exactly where each piece goes…the memories that we are building and sharing with them are priceless, and are the reason we love this time of year so much. As much as the kids enjoy the blessing of their gifts, we are trying to instill in them the true meaning of the season – giving and hope. We were very fortunate last year to be a part of Cornerstone Christmas, and look forward to participating again this year. It was so powerful and meaningful to our children, that they still talk about the family we walked along side and have asked if we will see them again this year! Another tradition that we enjoy is participating in the Prosper Christmas Festival. The kids love the parade, visiting with friends and the fun activities, and we enjoy the chance to celebrate the season with our community “family.” We were blessed with the opportunity to participate on the planning committee this year, and hope that our residents enjoy the new additions, while holding on to our past traditions. First time attendees and new residents find out quickly how special and unique the Prosper community is. In the words of a good friend and long time resident…We are Prosper, we are proud and this is home.

A Day in the Life of the Prosper Police Department Who are they? The hardworking men and women of our Prosper Police Department. Continuing our series on Prosper’s First Responders, Live & PROSPER Magazine had the absolute pleasure of interviewing a few members of our Prosper Police Department: Sergeant Brian Golden, Officer Sam Owens, Communications Supervisor Natalie Warren, and Communications Officer Charisse Snyder. The Prosper Police Department is led by Chief Kirk McFarlin and Assistant Chief Gary R. McHone. Under their leadership, the department consists of 2 sergeants, 11 officers with 10 filled positions and 1 current vacancy, 2 reserve officers, 1 communications dispatch supervisor, 4 communications dispatchers and 2 current vacancies, and 1 part-time dispatcher for an authorized total of 25 staff members. Each member of the department plays a critical role and, in collaboration, they work tirelessly to serve and protect our community, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, including holidays.

includes: address, phone number, and the victim’s medical status. “So all those crazy questions that we ask, it’s to help them, to get more information for the police and fire department to be able to respond properly,” added Communications Supervisor Natalie Warren. Communications Officer Charisse Snyder went on to explain the demands of the job sharing, “It usually comes in 2s or 3s. You listen with this ear on the phone, this ear on the radio, you’re typing…multitasking is an understatement; it’s just a big job.” With a voice of respect for the department’s dispatchers, Sergeant Golden added, “The challenging part of what she just explained to you is they’re by themselves doing all that.” Having learned a lot over the years in her position as a dispatcher, Communications Officer Charisse Snyder put a few of her thoughts down on paper in what she calls, “The EDGE,” Emergency Dispatch General Education. Here are just a few of her important tips for community members:

The officers work 10 hour shifts, with a minimum of 2 officers on duty at all times, continuously serving the 27 square mile area of Prosper. At the start of each shift, officers complete an equipment check, ensuring their siren, radio, computer, mobile video recording device (MBR), and all other equipment is functioning properly. Next, officers review reports from the previous shift and, within 15 minutes they are out on the road.

 “911 is a service for you. If you believe what you are calling in is an emergency, then it’s an emergency. Call; never hesitate.”  “Don’t be too quick to hang-up when calling 911. If your situation allows, stay on the line until the dispatcher ‘dismisses’ you.”  “If you are calling and overwhelmed with your situation, remember to state your location, location, location!”  “The dispatcher has your best interest at hand; if he/she gets firm with you on the phone, they are only trying to get help to you as quickly as possible.”  “If we put you on hold during a stressful time, it is for good reason; never because we don’t care about what you are going through.”  “If you accidently call 911, stay on the line and let the dispatcher know it was on accident.”

Prosper’s First Responders

The officers’ primary responsibility is responding to service calls, which range from civil standbys, traffic enforcement, major or minor accidents, domestic disputes, to violent crimes. Here in Prosper, the most prevalent types of crimes are “crimes of opportunity,” namely property theft. For example, personal items stolen from unlocked vehicles and homes. As Sergeant Golden explained, in most instances, these crimes of opportunity are entirely preventable when community members consistently remember to “Hide, Lock, Take.” That is, “Hide your belongings, Lock your car, and Take your keys.” Sergeant Golden went on to share, “Prosper is a great community, it absolutely is, but you can’t have a false sense of security,” indicating theft can happen anywhere and community members need to be proactive at all times. It is also recommended that community members take a few minutes out of their busy lives to record the serial numbers of valuable items, such as cars, computers, bicycles, and televisions. Doing so will allow law enforcement to more efficiently “track down” items in the event of theft. The dispatchers work 8 hour shifts, answering all 911 and administrative calls for the town of Prosper. Additionally, the dispatchers manage calls received from officers out on patrol. When answering 911 calls, the dispatchers follow a protocol to efficiently gather pertinent information and respond. Every question has an important purpose. Such information

Undoubtedly, the Prosper Police Department is highly committed to the community and several members of the department go above and beyond their primary duties to carry out their passions on their own time. For example, Officer Sam Owens chooses to volunteer most all of his vacation time to the Amber Memefee Mobile Memorial, a nonprofit organization that aims to celebrate the life of Amber Memefee, a teenager who was tragically killed by an underage drunk driver. The memorial aims to support the education and prevention of drinking and driving. As Officer Owens explained, “It’s my passion; my way of giving back. I go everywhere, high schools, colleges, civic events; wherever someone will lend me an ear. If I can touch one kid or one adult, I can pack up and go home.” Officer Owens added in a humble voice, “I don’t want anybody patting me on my back, I just wanna make a difference and this is my way of trying to make a difference.” For more information regarding the Amber Memefee Mobile Memorial, go to www.AmbersMobileMemorial.org. When asked what is most rewarding about their jobs, the group had much to share. Natalie Warren explained, “I just enjoy it. It’s not something a lot of people can do. It kinda hardens you a bit, but I’m very passionate about my job and the reward of it is definitely greater than you can actually express.” Officer Owens added, “I don’t think officers do it for the glory. not the glory-hounds. Everybody does it for different reasons, but it all goes back to ‘I wanna help.’” Sergeant Golden explained, “I think there’s a level of self-satisfaction that we share from having the opportunity to build an organization from the ground up.” Lastly, Charisse Snyder simply explained, “I think it’s rewarding enough just seeing the outcome of something bad turning good.”

They serve and protect our community. They are readily available for us 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. They are passionate about their work and compassionate toward the people they serve. Their driving motto is, “Service, Integrity, Professionalism.” When asked what is most challenging about their jobs, Charisse Snyder quickly chimed in, “For me the most challenging is I don’t always get to hear the end of a story; you know, you’re left hanging, wondering.” Officer Owens shared, “I don’t think as a police officer that you’d say any one thing

is a challenge, just being a police officer itself is a challenge.” Sergeant Golden went on to explain that, being a rapidly growing town has its “growing pains,” yet, he shared with optimism, “The town of Prosper is at its infancy, we are growing every day, and the experience I’ve had is that we’re always taking one step forward, always open to new ideas, always open to do what we need to do to make sure the job gets done.” When asked what life lessons they have learned through their work, Officer Owens kindly shared, “Don’t take anything for granted. As officers, we see the worst in people and the worst that can happen. We see the stuff that nobody wants to see and if I had to leave a lasting little saying before I had to part, I’d say, ‘don’t take anything for granted.’” When asked what seems to set the Prosper Police Department apart from other departments, Sergeant Golden shared with pride, “Everybody has got that ‘buy-in,’ that’s one thing you see that’s unique to Prosper and the people that work in Prosper. This is more than just a job to the people who work here. You’ve got a level of buy-in from these employees that you don’t find other places. I would say the majority of employees don’t make their home in Prosper, but they have a level of buy-in that it is personal to them. That this is my town, my department, my team members, that you don’t find at other places; that’s very unique.” Charisse Snyder went on to explain, “What I absolutely love about the town is every single police officer and staff member has a deep caring concern for the town; I mean their heart is just completely with everyone in this town.”

hances are, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve probably known someone who has struggled with depression. Depression is an increasingly common mood disorder that effects up to 17% of people in the United States and has been estimated to cost more than 80 billion dollars per year. Depression may affect 10% of all women and 5% of all men, up to 20% of those people aged 18-65, and 10% of those older than 65. Depression may have a genetic basis, but usually is also associated in part with several other factors, including past traumatic experiences, life adversity (death of a loved one, divorce, loss of employment), and limited social support. Depression may co-exist with other mood disorders including anxiety and substance dependence. Some of the symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness or worthlessness, lack of interest in activities usually found to be pleasurable, feelings of guilt, decreased energy, decreased concentration, changes in appetite, lack of motivation to initiate activities or social interaction, and finally, thoughts or plans of harming oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s self or harming others. Family physicians, when determining an accurate diagnosis of depression, will first rule out correctable medical conditions that may be causing symptoms of depression such as thyroid disease, low testosterone, certain vitamin deficiencies, and many other systemic conditions. Treatment for depression will usually consist of medicines and regular counseling, which in combination have a higher success rate than either medicines or counseling alone. It is important to remember that when dealing with depression, you are not alone, help is readily available, and sometimes treating depression with medication can literally be life changing. is a time for not only giving, loving, and Christmas celebrating with friends, family and neighbors, but the perfect opportunity to share the true meaning of the

season with those less fortunate. This magical season will be celebrated by all of Prosper on December 14th from 4:00 – 8:00pm at the Prosper Christmas Festival. This year’s festival will be a winter wonderland of lights and color, and will also brighten the faces of area children, as our community comes together to share the true meaning of the season. Festival attendees are encouraged to bring along and donate a new, unwrapped toy for infants to 17-year-olds. “We’re partnering with Cornerstone on the toy drive, and we’re also collecting non-perishable foods for the food pantry at Bethlehem Place. The Prosper Christmas Festival, we think, is the perfect opportunity to give from our bounty,” according to Festival Chairperson Melissa Randle. There will be collection boxes for toys and food items placed near the corner of Broadway and Coleman, the traditional entryway to the festival. The parade will kick off the festivities this year, lighting up the night with magical, seasonal floats. This year’s parade will take on a new route, beginning at Craig Street and proceeding west toward downtown on Broadway. “The new route will mean a whole new way of getting to the festival. We’re encouraging as many people as possible to avoid the parade route by parking at either of our park and ride locations, Rucker Elementary, 402 S. Craig or Reynolds Middle School, 700 N. Coleman,” says Randle. The park and ride locations offer free parking and shuttle service to and from the festival throughout the evening.

Market Street will again host a cookie decorating area, Home Depot will be on hand to help children with a DIY project, and there will be a plethora of shopping to help you finish off your Christmas lists. Everyone knows that any Christmas celebration isn’t complete without great food and the Prosper Christmas Festival is no different…so be sure to come hungry! Our very own Prosper firefighters will be serving up their famous barbecue, the Cotton Gin Café will be open, Mesas will be on hand with their Mexican cuisine, Chick Fil A will serve up their delicious chicken sandwiches, and you can enjoy various creole dishes, Hillbilly Kettle Korn and Kona Ice’s light stick cotton candy, as well as many other vendors to satisfy your taste buds. As an added treat, the Prosper Christmas Festival will conclude at 8:00pm with a glorious fireworks display. There will be so many activities to enjoy this year; there is truly something for everyone! This is the perfect representation of what the Prosper community has to offer. Bring your family and friends, celebrate with your neighbors and experience what makes Prosper unique. Christmas is a time to celebrate with family, and in our town, everyone is family! Please join us on December 14th for a wonderful celebration of our town, our blessings and the Christmas Spirit!

As the parade marches through downtown, attendees will enjoy entertainment throughout the evening at the Main Stage, from elementary, middle and high school dancers, choirs and performers. There will also be a mascot dance off, where mascots from schools and community organizations will compete for audience votes. And, of course, Santa Claus will make his annual appearance to the festival for the children’s gift requests. Children can take part in writing a letter to Santa and placing it in his mailbox for his return to the North Pole. There will be elves on hand to assist Santa and the children with this fun activity, and parents are encouraged to bring their cameras for these great photo opportunities. “We’re looking to make this a magical, festive wonderland of lights. Families will have plenty of photo-taking opportunities,” she said. In addition to the lights and Santa, a free photo booth with whimsical hats and other material will be available, wooden cut-outs of Christmas scenes with face-holes will be in place, and North Pole-themed directional signs will point the way to various events and activities. New this year will be a Polar Express trackless train that will transport people from place to place and a slide with real snow! As in the past,

Holiday Pets Keeping Your Pet Safe and Happy Through the

he holidays are a time for family, food, and fun! Unfortunately many pets will end up at veterinary hospitals and emergency rooms during this time of year. The good news is that many of these visits can be avioided by keeping holiday hazards in mind. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all tempted by sweet treats and the mountains of food around us. Pets face the same temptations, unfortunately there are some foods that are dangerous or toxic to pets. Avoid these foods that can harm your four legged family. If your pet ingests any of these you should contact your veterinarian: chocolate, rising bread dough, grapes and raisins, fatty foods, onions and garlic, macadamia nuts, alcohol/caffeine, dairy products It is not just food that can cause problems for our pets, though. Festive decorations can pose a hazard as well. Tinsel as well as strings and yarn are often attractive to dogs and cats and they may eat it. Christmas tree water often contains fertilizer and pesticides. Electric cords, if chewed on, can cause electrocution or shock. Candles and open flames present a burn risk. Holiday plants such as lilies, poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly need to be removed from temptation as well.

With everyone coming and going during this busy season pets can easily get out of the house and become lost. Boarding your pet when houses are brimming with guests eases the burden on everyone, and ensures your pet will continue to receive needed exercise, medication, and nutrition in a safe environment. Visitors may have medications with them that should always be kept away from pets. Antifreeze has a good taste but is deadly to pets; if ingestion is suspected contact your veterinarian immediately!

The holidays are an enjoyable time and being mindful of these holiday hazards will ensure that you and your pet will have a safe and happy holiday season. If the worst were to happen, know how to reach your veterinarian or local veterinary emergency hospital. The Holiday Issue

Making Meaningful Memories

he holidays come with a rich memory bank of scents and smells. Pause for a moment and smell the scent of fresh bread baking, a turkey roasting, a holiday candle burning or the pine smell of a Christmas tree that is freshly cut and fragrant. The holidays are upon us and with it come the importance of taking time to reflect upon what we can to do make meaningful memories. What do you remember about what your grandparents and/or extended family did to make the holidays a special time? Hopefully you have some good memories. If not, what would you have liked from them that you may not have received? As you find ways to give special memories to your own children, it may heal your own heart of hurts and possible disappointments. It truly is in the giving that we receive. Consider taking time this holiday season to build in some meaningful traditions for your family. You may want to take time to ask extended family members such as grandparents about some of their favorite family traditions and memories. These traditions build in security for our children, especially in a transient society or two family homes. If you have a blended family, ask the children over some friendly hot chocolate and cookies what some of their favorite family memories and traditions were before the family broke up. You may want to consider incorporating some of these into your blended family as you seek to create new traditions as well. In my family, growing up, my parents didn’t have much money but we had lots of children. We always had ‘red’ and ‘green’ soup for Christmas, which I later learned, was simply tomato and pea soup, but as children we thought it was the best! My parents were very creative at making $10.00 per child magically become 10 different presents wrapped and under the tree. Later with 20 grandchildren opening their 200 presents and whooping for joy, the children never guessed when they were young that the gifts didn’t cost much, but they did feel the wealth of love in the gifts. It was loud and boisterous and lots of fun. Later we all walked to the midnight service in the snow singing at the top of our lungs and then came home for hot chocolate and cookies. All the children loved going to Grandma and Grandpa’s house in Minnesnowta for Christmas. On the other hand, my husband’s family members were all involved in professional ministry. Christmas was a time of sacred reflection on the real meaning of Christmas. It was quiet; we sang Christmas hymns, read the scriptures, and each child received one gift. And of course, we were all in church for the services. When our own children were young, they preferred a Minnesnowta Christmas with my family and all their cousins. As they got older, they began to see the value in the contrast of different kinds of traditions that were a rich part of their heritage. In our own family, we developed a blend of both so that our children would have our own family traditions.

Smells have a way of taking us back to a time and place, however far away. Each family has to evaluate what they want their children to receive from the holidays. With so many blended families, it becomes harder to establish traditions, but also becomes even more imperative to do so in order for children to feel that something has permanence. Involve your children in the planning. You may be surprised at what memories are special for them. Be creative as you plan the holidays. Find ways to build meaning in the way that you spend time together, whether in person or long distance. Presents are transient and fade away, but the gift of our time and traditions lives on and hopefully, for many generations. Let’s give more of our presence and less on the presents as we seek to make meaningful memories for our families. n this wonderful time of year, we celebrate God’s greatest gift—our Lord Jesus Christ.

And sharing the awesome wonders of our Savior’s birth to those who do not yet know Him is a joy we shouldn’t contain and the most priceless gift we could ever give! Remember the Angel of the Lord standing before the shepherds in the field near Bethlehem. Remember the graceful and powerful words that poured out, a beautiful ode of joy: “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord .... Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” Can you imagine what the world would be like without the wondrous birth of Christ? It’s beyond our imagination, isn’t it? We wouldn’t really know God as we know God today. Because when Jesus Christ came, He came as our Immanuel. God is “with us.” God is no longer a distant deity; God is no longer an unfathomable or unapproachable image. But God is life; God is flesh and blood; God is with us!

And when we see Jesus Christ through the Scriptures, and by the spirit and faith, believe in Him, we see God. Jesus said in John 14:9, “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father.” Jesus Christ is God! Not a man acting like God, not even God acting like a man, but God in a man and the man full of God! And for 33 years, God walked upon the face of this earth. He walked in humility. He walked in servanthood. He lived expressing the love of the Father. And because God came … because Jesus, our Immanuel, is forever with us, He will save His people from their sins. “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). Saved from our sins! Saved today to live for Him! And saved forever because of Jesus Christ! That is the meaning of Christmas! That is the Christmas Story! cup packed brown sugar cup shortening cups dark molasses cup cold water cups Gold Medal® all-purpose flour teaspoons baking soda teaspoons ground ginger teaspoon ground allspice teaspoon ground cinnamon teaspoon ground cloves teaspoon salt

Frosting and Decorations 4 cups powdered sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 4 to 5 tablespoons half-and-half Food colors, if desired Raisins or chocolate chips, if desired Assorted candies, if desired

Directions In large bowl, beat brown sugar, shortening, molasses and water with electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with spoon, until well blended. Stir in remaining ingredients. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease cookie sheet lightly with shortening or spray with cooking spray. On floured surface, roll dough 1/4 inch thick. Cut with floured gingerbread cutter or other shaped cutter. On cookie sheet, place cutouts about 2 inches apart. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until no indentation remains when touched. Immediately remove from cookie sheet to cooling rack. Cool completely, about 30 minutes. In medium bowl, mix powdered sugar, vanilla and half-and-half until frosting is smooth and spreadable. Add food colors as desired. Frost cookies; decorate with raisins, chocolate chips and candies. 24 | Live & Prosper Magazine

cup sugar cup shortening cup full-flavor (dark) molasses egg cups Gold Medal® all-purpose flour tablespoon ground cinnamon teaspoon baking soda teaspoon ground allspice

tub (16 ounces) Betty Crocker® Rich & Creamy vanilla frosting Assorted candies and cereals, if desired

Directions Heat oven to 350°F. Line jelly roll pan, 15 1/2x10 1/2x1 inch, with heavy-duty foil, leaving 1 inch of foil overhanging at each end of pan. In large bowl, mix sugar, shortening, molasses and egg with spoon. Stir in all remaining Gingerbread Dough ingredients. Divide dough in half. Press half of dough in pan. Bake gingerbread about 15 minutes or until no indentation remains when touched in center. Cool 5 minutes; carefully lift foil and gingerbread from pan. Cut gingerbread lengthwise in half, then crosswise 2 times to make 6 rectangles. Cut angles from 2 corners of each rectangle to form roof of house. (The corners make good nibbles.) Cool completely, about 1 hour. Repeat with remaining dough. Decorate houses with frosting and candies. The Holiday Issue

Tie it off in one of the ties… tightly! This is your starting and ending point. DO NOT CUT THE DECOMESH.

For the inner part of thewreath you will do the exact same thing.

When you’vemake a decent sized loop, gather the material tightly and twist it up with the tie.

When you are donewith the deco mesh on the inner and outer circle of the wreath you can add ribbon if you would like. Just tie it in like you did the deco mesh.

Must haves: Deco mesh Wire Wreath with ties Scissors Others things you might want: Ribbon Hot glue gun Any Ornaments or Accessories that you want to add

You will continue to go around the outer part of the wreath the same way. We honestly don’t knowhow much. Just play with it andmeasure out how big you want the puff to be.

You might want to start at a different point though so all starts and stops aren’t in the same area on the wreath.

Continue around the wreath until you get back to where you started.

Weaving it in and around thewreath attaching where you would like to attach it to the ties.

The ornaments and fun stuff comes last. Some things you can twist and tie on thewreath but other things you may have to hot glue.

The Eagle’s Nest - PISD News

ack in August, a few weeks before school even began, the Prosper Eagles Varsity Volleyball team was working hard and preparing for a more successful season than they ever could’ve imagined. Led by Coach Erin McClanahan, the vision and goal for the 2013 Varsity Season was competing for a District Title and advancing to the playoffs. The heart, dedication and loyalty that this team gave to their team, sport, coach and school took them on a ride that far exceeded their expectations…and with the entire Prosper community behind them, advanced to the State Championship game, a first in Prosper High School Volleyball’s proud history. After a successful 10-3 District Season, the Lady Eagles entered into BiDistrict play and swept their first three opponents, Creekview, Carter and Frisco High. They won each match 3-0, playing with heart, skill and dominance. As they advanced into Regional play, they then defeated Waxahachie 3-2 to compete for the Regional Final against Frisco Centennial. An exciting, hard fought and emotional game, Prosper came out on top and defeated Centennial 3-2 to advance to the State Finals!! As the girls entered into State Finals play, they took along with them the support and belief of an entire community. The girls were given a send off at the High School fit for champions as they loaded the buses and headed to the tournament. Not only did the high school students, parents and supporters get into the send off, but even the middle school students lined the street as they drove past...a true community effort and representation of Eagle Pride! The Lady Eagles were supported throughout the state finals with a crowd and student section that had the entire state of Texas talking! Dr. Drew

Watkins had this to say about the support and the team’s success, “UIL officials who have been covering state contests for many years around the state said they have NEVER witnessed anything like our student section in any sport. More importantly, they could not say enough about how respectful our kids acted. And finally, our community never fails to support our kids. Other schools have “fan” support, but we have “community” support like no other.” After winning the semi-final game against Dripping Springs, Prosper met Amarillo for the State Championship. And while they came up short in that final game, they are still champions to us! The 2013 Prosper Lady Eagles Volleyball team is the 2nd best out of 251 teams in Texas – an incredible feat in our books!! We’d like to congratulate the players, coaches, parents, students, supporters, athletic department and administration for all of their hard work and dedication…WE ARE PROSPER!!
