Prosper is a town on the brink of tremendous growth and beautiful surroundings, but more than that, Prosper is a town full of genuine, compassionate, giving people. We are a true community – we know our neighbors, we love our schools, we support one another and we treat each other with respect and small town manners. Like many of you, these are the reasons we chose to raise our family here. This issue is especially meaningful to us, as we had the pleasure of spending time with each of our nominees for Prosper’s Person of 2012. We are truly blessed to have such incredible leadership in our community and school district. Each was truly humbled by their nomination, and each selflessly contributes to our neighbors, our children and our town. We wholeheartedly thank all that were involved, particularly our panel of judges! With all of the remarkable candidates, we know it was a difficult task to select just one to honor as Prosper’s Person of 2012. We hope you enjoy getting to know the nominees, and we look forward to getting to know our 2013 nominees next year!!

Reflecting on God’s Never-Ending Love So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. —1 Corinthians 13:13

With Valentine’s Day approaching, it’s important that we focus on the true meaning of love and the power of love. First Corinthians Chapter 13 has been called the “love chapter” because of its breathtaking hymn of love. It is also a beautiful portrait of Christ Himself.

Karl Menninger, a noted psychologist, once said, “Love cures people, both the ones who give it and the ones who receive it.” Yet, so often in our materialistic, faithless world today, people only think of healing in terms of what they can see. But science has proven that there is a very immaterial, even spiritual, aspect to healing that takes place when love is given and received.

Now, you may be thinking, “Pastor, are you trying to tell me that love will fix all the world’s problems?” Well, I don’t think everything becomes perfect when we love one another. But I do believe that many of the problems we face in our world today would go away if we simply loved more.

But if that’s going to happen, it’s going to take real love—God’s love—because that’s the only kind of love that endures. You see, the world’s love runs out when times are difficult. But God’s love never lets go no matter what.

Do you want to be happy? Love others. Do you want to make a difference in the world? Love others. While it may not fix every problem, it’s a great place to start! Show the world the solution to all of its problems by loving others with God’s love—a love that never fails! So reflect that same love to others by loving patiently and unselfishly. When you have the love of God in your heart, you’ll also begin to love others as God loves you. You’ll learn to be patient, kind, slow to anger, and never-failing. You’ll love with a 1 Corinthians 13 kind of love.

F
ebruary 21st through March 1st is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. There are two common types of eating disorders, anorexia and bulimia. In this article, we’ll focus on anorexia. Anorexia is defined as a failure to maintain a body weight greater than 85% of what is expected for age and height. Up to 0.9% of women and 0.3% of men are affected by anorexia, although there is a higher prevalence in adolescent and young adult females. Due to the ever-increasing influence of television, magazines, movies, and social media on our community, there is a powerful and unavoidable message that thin young women and men are the cultural norm. The social pressures of adolescence and family stressors may also influence the development of children, adolescents, and young adults to place them at risk for developing anorexia. The truth is, there is a wide range of ideal
body weights depending on age and height, yet many young adults may adopt an unhealthy view of their body type and shape. They begin to view themselves as overweight, even if they are at optimal or below weight for their age and height. Anorexia starts as a constant worry about gaining weight, which may develop into an intense fear of eating, which leads to avoidance behavior. Before long, people affected by anorexia spend all of their time thinking about food, meals, and calories. They may eat too small of portions with meals, create rules around food or skip meals altogether, avoid eating in public, overexercise, or make themselves throw up or take laxatives after eating. Maintaining a low body weight and their perceived ideal body image become the person’s primary measure of self-worth, and there is usually a denial of the seriousness of this condition.
When people lose more than 15% of their normal body weight, they begin to experience fatigue, weakness, and lightheadedness from depleted nutrients, chest pain A Comprehensive Approach to and slow heart rate from structural damage Family Medicine to the heart, constipation and other digestive emptying problems, changes in menstrual cycles in females, wasting of muscle mass and bone, leading to early osteoporosis, and several skin problems. In many cases, untreated anorexia may be life-threatening and may require hospitalization. Due the nature of the condition, it is understandable that many people with anorexia are reluctant to admit that being underweight is a serious problem, and do not want to talk about it. Yet, there are many resources readily accessible to those dealing with anorexia. Talk to your family about what is going on, and schedule a visit with your family physician. Your doctor visit will include a medical history, physical examination with measurement of height and weight, lab work and possibly some other testing. Your physician may then recommend referrals to a dietician, as well as a counselor or a support group. The mainstay of treatment is a healthy weight gain back to the ideal body weight for age and height. Treatment of anorexia takes time and may involve several follow up appointments to ensure a successful outcome. It is important to realize that when facing an eating disorder or any other illness, you are not alone, and help is immediately available. Call the office of Dr. Jon Thomas at 972-347-5778 to schedule an appointment for any general medical problem today. Need to schedule an appointment afterhours? Go to www.ProsperFamilyDoctor. com and schedule your appointment 24/7 using the ZocDoc link on our homepage.

Prosper’s Person of The Year 2012
We are proud of our community, our businesses and our residents. Ask anyone in our town what makes Prosper unique and wonderful, and the unanimous answer you will hear is the PEOPLE! We asked for nominations of compassionate, giving, successful leaders in our community, and you responded with these 7 remarkable individuals! Our panel of 12 judges read through the nominations and interview questionnaires, and voted on their selection of Prosper’s Person of 2012. Congratulations to Dr. Drew Watkins!! We’ve included the nominations in this section, along with brief responses from each from their interview questionnaires. Please visit www.liveprosper.com for their full interview. Thank you to each of the participants, the panel of judges and our readers for searching your hearts and nominating such extraordinary candidates. Dr. Drew Watkins, the Superintendent of Prosper ISD has been instrumental in putting the Town of Prosper on the map. His vision and leadership have catapulted Prosper ISD into one of the most highly sought after school districts in the state. Dr. Watkins is truly passionate about ensuring what is best for children is at the forefront of every decision in Prosper ISD. “Children First”, is not just a motto but a way of life for him and Prosper ISD. As the Town of Prosper continues to grow, the vision and leadership of Dr. Watkins will continue to be instrumental in making the Town of Prosper the place to be for future generations. L&P- How long you’ve lived/worked in Prosper? DW- this is my 11th year as PISD Superintendent. L&P- What is the most endearing part for you about living/working here? DW– This is the easiest question… I am fortunate to be allowed to serve as Superintendent in a supportive community with outstanding families. We have nearly 5,600 students, which
Dr. Drew Watkins is about 4,500 more than when I arrived over 10 years ago. Geography does not make Prosper great, the people do. L&P- Your vision for our growing town? DW- In one word - “Excellence”. The Town has the challenge of guiding the growth in a community-friendly yet financially feasible manner that will create “excellent” experiences for our families, businesses, and community members. The ISD is committed to being a strong partner with the Town to that end. Born and raised in Texas, Dr. Watkins has served in the Texas public school system for 25 years. During that time, he has held the positions of teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, deputy superintendent and superintendent. He assumed the position of Superintendent of Prosper Independent School District in 2002. As a middle school principal, then he was named “Principal of the Year” for Region VIII and “Who’s Who Among America”s Teachers” recognition. As an administrator, he passed the first bond issue in 30 years for Jarrell ISD,
the first multiple-project bond issue in Prosper ISD and an unprecedented $710 million bond issue in Prosper ISD along with a successful TRE. He was a top finalist for the Texas Computer Education Association’s “Superintendent of the Year” in 2009. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree of Science at Texas Christian University in 1987; completed Graduate work in History and Education Law at Lamar University in 1989; a Master’s Degree of Education from Stephen F. Austin State University in 1996; a Master’s Degree of Science in Higher Education Administration from TAMU-Commerce in 2007; and a Doctor’s Degree of Education in Secondary and Higher Education in 2008. He currently serves on the Superintendent Leadership Network with the Schlechty Center and has served on the TASA Cabinet of Superintendents with the Commissioner of Education and the Administrative Services Advisory Council. He was Energy Manager with MPISD; President of the North East Texas Middle School Association and Regional Officer for Texas Association of Secondary School Principals. He is a member of the Texas Association of School Administrators and Association for Texas Professional Educators, serves on the Steering Committee for the Texas Fast Growth Coalition and Texas Mid-Size Schools Association, and finally is an adjunct professor for Concordia University. He and his wife Kristen (a PISD elementary school teacher) live in Prosper with their three children ages 18, 15 and 14. L&P- Who you are when nobody is looking? DW– Oh gosh, great question. I hope that I am the same person as I am when everyone IS looking. I would also like to hope that I am simply a dad and husband. Admittedly, I am, how should I say, a bit “over-competitive” – or so I have heard :). L&P- Your feelings about the statements in your nomination? DW- I am humbled by the nomination. Looking at the list I can make a stronger argument for everyone else on this list of very deserving individuals. Although the nomination might simply be the opinion of one, I am still honored and thankful to represent Prosper ISD.

Prosper’s Person of the Year 2012 Nominees
Ray Smith Ray Smith is both a Leader and a Servant to his family, his church, and his community. Please consider him for Prosper’s Person of 2012 for the following reasons: Town Leader - He has served as Mayor and Town Councilman in Prosper for several years. Community Servant – He is a huge supporter of PISD, regularly speaking to classes about role of Mayor, Council and local government. He also volunteers his time reading to a few classes. Church Leader & Family Man He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Lighthouse Christian Fellowship Church. He supports the churches in the community, actively involved in outreach and community service projects through the church. “I love the volunteer/servant attitudes of our citizens. The Windmill playground is a good example of many citizens working together giving their time and money to complete a project and make Prosper a better place to live. Another example is every year we receive a large number of applications from citizens wanting to serve on the Town’s boards and commissions. The most difficult part of my job is not having a place for everyone to serve. My vision for Prosper is to attract high quality residential and commercial developments; provide a safe environment for our citizens and maintain fiscal responsibility. Continue developing our partnerships with the Prosper Independent I have been married 23 years to my beautiful wife Lena. We have raised 3 sons and currently raising 2 grandsons. I have served as Mayor for 3 years and Councilman 3 years. I have served on the Economic Development Corporation since 2004.”

Jennifer Sanchez
Jennifer Lutes Jen Lutes is the founder and program director of Cornerstone Assistance Network based in Prosper. She has quietly helped many people in this community with her kindness, generosity and her love for God and others. Her vision for helping people has made a HUGE difference in this town and she is an example to me!! “Prosper is a hidden gem that we are so grateful to have found. The people in Prosper are what make this town unique. There is a sense of community; there is the feel of a small town with big dreams. I believe as the town grows and we add more schools, stores, traffic and activity, the people must work to keep the small town manners. As new people move into our town, we must show our generous heart and our love of our neighbors. I have witnessed on numerous occasions how the people of Prosper will offer money, possessions, food and care to anyone who has lost their house to a fire, or had some other unexpected tragedy. This is one of the best traits of who we are. These things demonstrate the very soul of who we are in Prosper, and we are so fortunate to have a town and its leaders who foster that behavior. When I first brought up the idea to start Cornerstone (as it would eventually be called), I had no idea what to expect. The initial idea was just to open a community clothes closet where folks in Prosper could donate clothes for us to be able to distribute to neighbors in need. We were quickly overwhelmed with donations and with calls from Prosper folks asking how they could help. And when we opened The Attic, Cornerstone’s retail thrift store in downtown Prosper where 100% of the profits go to support Cornerstone’s neighbors, the response was overwhelming. There is no question; Cornerstone’s growth is directly attributable to the wonderful people of this town and their willingness to give generously of their time, money, and possesions.”
I don’t think there is much I can say that Jen Sanchez is not a part of. Not only does she work at the PTA in her own school, she helps others. She is involved with getting EVERY park up and running. She assists Bethlehem place and Cloth-a-Child to make sure all the kids in our community have what they need to get by. She goes above and beyond to make sure kids in our community feel loved-and not just her own, or those her beautiful children are connected to. “My vision for Prosper’s future is that it will always offer the small town feel it had when I moved here. I know almost all of my neighbors and I like seeing familiar faces at places like the Post Office. It has never bothered me that we don’t have a grocery store. I like simple things and genuine people. However, Prosper is growing, it was intended to flourish and expansion isn’t a bad thing if done the right way. I realize Prosper’s 27 square miles will look totally different 5 years from now. One day we will have a central gathering place like a Town square with a big community hall for indoor events and an outdoor amphitheater for concerts and events. And we will have more grocery stores than I can imagine. That wouldn’t be all bad as long as we still treat our neighbors like they always matter. I became involved in community events like our neighborhood holiday gatherings and the garage sale. I started a newsletter to the neighbors and we now network well when a family is in need. When the girls began school, I started volunteering there and chairing fundraisers. I have had a really good time collecting Box Tops, motivating students and their families for the PTO Fun Run & Royal Run and working with Principal Jana Thomson & with Debra Smith as PTO Co-Presidents at two schools.”

Kelly is committed to the Town of Prosper, ran for Town Council, served on Town Charter Amendment Commission to help update and improve our Town’s Charter, serves on Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee, attends most Town Council meetings, planning and zoning meetings and is one of the organizers/founders of Prosper Tea Party. “I love (and we came here for) the small town feel, open space, and friendly-neighborly atmosphere of Prosper. We are clearly going to grow out of the initial state that most of us moved into, because of our prime geographical location, and great road/highway corridors...and while that disappoints many Prosper residents who love the “small-ness” of our town right now, I think there is such beautiful potential for the coming growth, to truly secure our town as a “Jewel of North Texas”. I’d love to see the more commercially high-potential areas, that are obviously going to “boom”, be our high end “glamorous” spots; while just a block or two down the roadways, residents and visitors can travel into the same lovely, “small country town” atmosphere of our spacious neighborhoods, smaller retail clusters, and fabulous schools. We have an amazing potential to achieve that true “Jewel” status, and I’ll continue to be committed to helping Prosper achieve it...one of my many labors of love! I was both flattered and humbled when informed that I was nominated. I really love people, and Prosper, and feel it is my duty to do - and be the best I can, and serve where I can. God has blessed me with more than I could ever thank Him for, and I believe that I am placed here to serve...to be honest, a leader, and an asset wherever it is that I may be “pointed”. I honestly appreciate even being mentioned in this company of good Prosper neighbors and friends.”
Daphne Morris
Perry Waller
Mrs. Morris is a true representation of the heart of this town. She is such a kind and compassionate person who truly loves people. She constantly has a smile on her face and is always ready to go above and beyond the call of duty. As an Administrator for one of our local elementary schools, Mrs. Morris spends her days encouraging, loving, and teaching our children. I know that my family is only one of many who have been so blessed by her.
Perry Waller has given generously of his time and talents as Chairman of the Board of Prosper Chamber of Commerce. 2012 has shown an increase in meeting and event attendance as well as an increase in the membership of the Chamber.
“The families in Prosper remind me of those I remember from my childhood and school years. The golden rule of treating others how you would like to be treated is prevalent, and hearing a child thank you when you do something for them is common place. Parents here regard manners and courtesy as important, and their children are a reflection of that. Whether you go to the Cotton Gin for breakfast, go to an Eagle’s ballgame, or have a pizza delivered, the young people here tend to be very polite and industrious. Kids tend to mirror the attitudes and character of their parents, so that is an indication of the kind of people who call Prosper home.
I love to drive through the older streets and country roads and remember “who used to live there” or “what house or building used to be there.” I grew up in this town of Prosper and my memories of family and friends are numerous and I really value what is, was, and what it can become.
As Prosper continues to grow, I envision remaining a strong, family-based community, as it is today. I believe that Prosper’s growth to this point has been driven to a large degree by attracting families that value education, and a safe wholesome community in which to raise their children. I am honored and deeply humbled to be nominated. Prosper is such a strong community, with so many wonderful contributors that being singled out is both touching and surprising. I believe education is a calling, and working with students has allowed me an enriching, fulfilling career.”

“I was born in Prosper in 1940 and continued to live there until my marriage in 1965 (with two years in the Army in1963-65). In recent years I have become involved with the Prosper Chamber and Prosper Heritage Foundation.
I know that growth is coming and that is good, but it must be well defined and controlled so that our infrastructure and facilities are prepared to fully handle additional people and businesses. The Chamber of Commerce is excited about the possibilities new businesses arriving in Prosper and adding to the vitality of the town. It would be nice to keep some of the “small town” qualities and a good and dedicated program of our history and heritage which the current Foundation is attempting to do. I feel a great passion for the Prosper Chamber of Commerce. When we started several years ago, there were very few businesses. Prosper is beginning to grow and we are all working to make the organization worthwhile and meaningful to our business members. The nomination statements are very kind and I really appreciate them. I know that the Board and the members are all working hard and together we will do even more in 2013. I am grateful.”

As 2013 begins, we at Prosper Dermatology Associates, thank you for your many visits with us. Since July 2011, when we first opened our doors as the first dermatology group in Prosper, it has been our pleasure to provide you with first rate dermatologic care. Our founder, Dr. Michael McGuiness, has been a local dermatologist for 17 years, with plans to be in practice many more years. We began as, and continue to be, the only Board Certified, MD based, dermatology practice in Prosper, open 5 or 6 days every week. We are also the only full service local dermatology office in Prosper, providing medical, surgical and cosmetic services for children, teens, adults, and seniors. Dr. McGuiness is committed to the Prosper area, and we will soon begin construction of our new office building, adjacent to our current location, in Prosper. Our physician assistant, Brian Cook, is similarly invested in the area, having moved to Prosper to join Dr. McGuiness. Over the year and a half that we have been open in Prosper, our practice has expanded steadily, thanks to you! In response to the increasing requests for more cosmetic services, we have just added two new state of the art lasers that allow us to do laser hair removal, IPL, skin resurfacing, and scar treatment. These services compliment our medical treatments, which include the most thorough skin check/skin cancer screening you’ve probably ever had. Dr McGuiness is well known for his emphasis on skin cancer prevention and treatment, a philosophy that is upheld by all in the Prosper office. Dr. McGuiness strives to ensure that your experience with us is very individualized, and brimming with great customer service. From the phone calls, to the front desk, to the nursing and care by the medical staff and follow-up, we want you to feel cared for, and to feel the genuine interest we have in providing YOU great service. We welcome your feedback, about any aspect of your visit, and the care we provide. Prosper Dermatology Associates has been here for over 18 months, and will continue to be. We will continue to invest in this area, with the addition of another physician and construction of our new office later this year. So, thank you again, for choosing us as your dermatology specialist. We will continuously seek to provide more and improved services and personal care for you.

First off, not everyone knows what a mediator does and how they can help. What should people expect in mediation? A mediator is a neutral, impartial person that helps parties with the process of solving issues. A mediator makes no judgments, and the parties decide the final settlement. People should expect the opportunity to be heard and the ability to participate in finding and creating solutions that work for all parties involved. How is mediation win-win? Mediation allows people to give input and to create their own solutions to achieve settlement. It provides a platform for people to have a voice in their mutual agreement. Why is there such a big buzz about Uptown Mediation? What’s so unique about your company? Uptown Mediation is unique because we offer many flexible options as solutions for people to resolve their issues. We have mediators that are fluent in Spanish, French and Arabic. We offer day, night and weekend appointments. We also have the option of conducting Online Mediations using advanced tools. We have office space available globally. We are a flexible, innovative and accessible mediation firm with a genuine desire to help people. We heard you are helping families with elders mediate their issues, how does that work? Yes, we specialize in Elder Care Mediations. It’s a trending service that helps families talk about needs and problems to work together to create care plans for aging loved ones. We help family members, near and far, communicate their concerns and work towards finding resources, solutions and a plan of action for optimal care. Tell us about your team. How would you describe them? How do they fit into the Uptown Mediation vision? We have a very diverse group of individuals. We are multilingual, multicultural, multigenerational and multidimensional with a true passion for helping people solve problems. We have a wide variety of specialties and backgrounds. I love how well my team works together, whether co-mediating or workshop hosting, everyone is very supportive of each other and their individual assets, accomplishments and future goals. I am so proud of our team and all that they are each achieving!
Why did you decide to start a career and company in the field of mediation? I have a background in communications and sociology. I originally wanted to go to law school but I turned down acceptance letters and scholarships to pursue something a little more me. I’ve always been told that I’m a natural mediator and a peopleperson. Once I decided to pursue it as a career, I instantly felt at home in SMU’s Dispute Resolution program. I saw a need in my local and global community for more people to know about the wonderful option of mediation. I wanted to provide a resource for people and forming Uptown Mediation met that need. What are you hoping to achieve in the next year as a company? What does your short term vision look like? Right now we have a weekly series on Spotlite Radio, helping callers learn to use mediation to solve problems they face with their family, business and community. My vision is to carry this out further and share mediation tools with a broader audience in radio and television. I’m currently writing a children’s book series on using similar tools for anti-bullying and boundary setting. What is the most exciting thing about Uptown Mediation right now? We just hired two new mediators and will be adding a third this summer. We are growing and expanding our reach for who we can help! Literacy Lenses by Kim Southwell
Welcome to February’s, I Love to Read month! Is your child struggling in reading and writing? What can you do to help at home? Are you concerned that your child is having problems with reading or writing? If so, speak with their teacher, who will be able to tell you if your child is indeed falling behind. An ongoing teacher assessment will give you an idea of your child’s reading level and what is expected at each stage. Teachers may provide you with extra activities that you can instil at home to support your child’s reading, writing and/or spelling concerns. Rarely will additional support confuse a child in the process of learning to read. Some children simply need a boost using additional literacy

resources to support their emerging reading and writing skills. The most important thing a parent can do to encourage their child’s reading is to help them find books that are appropriate reading levels and interesting content which will motivate their child to enjoy reading. Making use of the local library can help here. Reading aloud can also help children enjoy stories they might struggle to read themselves. As your child gains independence in reading and writing a parent can give necessary support, while allowing their child to achieve their literacy goals.
