Voted 2013 New Business of The Year
Happy New Year Prosper!! We always enjoy the events of ringing in the New Year, not only for all of the festivities, but for what it represents…reflection on our blessings and events in the current year, and the anticipation and excitement of what is to come. A new year symbolizes a NEW BEGINNING, with so much promise and enthusiasm. A slate wiped clean, ready to be filled up again with experiences and memories. We are beyond thrilled to announce that Prosper’s newest resident has arrived!! Our New Year’s Eve was spent in the best way possible – welcoming a beautiful, healthy, baby girl into our family!! Talk about a new beginning, anticipation and excitement…our family is experiencing them all. We will have so many “firsts” to experience in 2014, and we look forward to sharing them with you. Many of our friends and neighbors have older children, as we do, so our hope is to help bring back some memories, remind our readers of how fast they grow up and to take a moment every day to appreciate each blessing. Whether you are still planning your future family, a brand new parent, getting your baby ready for middle school or sending them off to college, each stage is a milestone worth celebrating. Each one shapes who you are as a parent, and who your child will become. It truly is the miracle and joy of life. That moment when we finally got to meet our newest addition is something that we will never forget. It is so amazing how someone so small and helpless can change your life in an instant. Yes, we have older children, so we already knew how remarkable it would be when she made her arrival and how easily we would welcome her with unconditional love. As a parent, you know these things in your heart, whether it was 5 minutes or 50 years ago! Yet, no matter how many times you experience it or how deeply you believe it in your heart, the incredible emotions of love, protection and complete devotion to this new little person are overwhelming. The flood of emotions came upon us as if we were experiencing it for the very first time. A new daughter, a new member of the family, a new blessing!! We wish all of you a very happy and Prosper-ous New Year, and thank you again for allowing us into your homes each month. This town and its residents never cease to amaze us in generosity and family spirit. We are truly honored to bring our new baby home to this display of community and small town values. We couldn’t have chosen a better place to watch our children grow, or better people to surround them with. We are lucky to be a part of the Prosper family, and are excited to watch it grow…one NEW BEGINNING after another!

Goal Setting and New Year’s Resolutions
– How to Help You and Your Children Be Successful By Heather Reynolds
F
or many of us, New Year’s resolutions are grandly made and easily broken. Why? Because a resolution is just that – a decision. To make a life change, you need more than a decision, you need a plan. The plan is the guide to put your decision into action so that you can reach your goal. It’s up to you to take steps to get closer to your goal, and learning how to set goals takes practice. Whether you resolve to lose weight, save money or adopt a healthier lifestyle, it takes time and commitment to your plan for your resolution to become a habit. Setting realistic goals can lead to a healthier lifestyle and improved self-esteem. Children also benefit from learning how to plan and reach goals. It helps them learn how to manage their time and make good decisions – skills that can have a lasting and positive impact on their future. Together with your child, set a healthy goal and create a plan! Setting a small goal, like getting up half an hour earlier in the morning so that you can get where you need to be on time, may be challenging, but it just takes practice. And, after a few weeks or months, it will become a positive habit. Knowing that you can make small changes can give you the motivation and confidence to tackle a bigger goal. An adult may choose to quit smoking or exercise regularly; a child could choose dribbling a soccer ball or practicing multiplication tables daily. The following tips can help you and your children successfully plan and achieve your goals: Be specific. When thinking about goals, be as exact as possible. People who set specific goals are more likely to succeed. For example, instead of saying that you want to save money, set a specific goal to save $20 (or whatever the goal amount is) per week. Put it in writing. Write down exactly what you want to achieve and post it
10 | Live & PROSPER Magazine
in a place where you will see it every day. This will help remind you of what you’re working toward. When you write, use positive terms. For example, instead of “I will stop eating junk food”, re-word your goal as “I will make healthy food choices.” Set realistic goals. When you think about setting goals, make sure that they are within your reach. Be mindful of your finances, schedule, and other personal affairs. Remembering these important factors will help you set realistic goals. It’s unreasonable to expect to make a lot of big changes at the same time. Develop an action plan. Create a timeline with steps toward your goal. Set deadlines for each step and cross them off as you go. Sometimes just crossing things off and watching your list get smaller can give you a sense of accomplishment and help you stay motivated. Believe in yourself. Stay positive about your progress. Share your goal with a friend and ask him/her to help keep your spirits up. If you get stuck or need a little encouragement, don’t be afraid to talk about it. Be flexible. Keep in mind that setbacks can happen. Don’t get discouraged and give up. Try again! Your hard work will pay off! Reward yourself. Acknowledge your achievements, even the small ones. Reaching a goal takes hard work and you should be proud of your efforts. Celebrating could mean sharing a snack with your child or taking some time for yourself. Having clear goals and a plan can bring your family together and help you be healthier all year. All positive changes – tiny or drastic – can improve your everyday life. Make this New Year count and create a plan to follow through on your resolutions! January | 2014

Healthy S olutions

A Healthy Start with Pregnancy
regnancy is an exciting time and many women have questions regarding how to have a healthy pregnancy and have concerns related to the physical changes of pregnancy. Pregnancy often provides motivation for women to improve their diet and minimize other unhealthy habits. Appropriate weight gain, diet, and exercise will be discussed at your first prenatal visit and will be addressed throughout your pregnancy. Most women are interested to know what is a healthy weight gain for pregnancy. In general, women who are of a healthy weight are advised to gain 25-35 lbs., overweight women between 15- 25 lbs., and obese women are advised to gain closer to 11-20 lbs. It is recommended for women with twins to gain more weight, generally around 35-50 lbs. Today, many pregnant women in the US are overweight or obese at conception. Overweight and obese women are at increased risk of complications such as elevated blood pressure, gestational diabetes, and need for delivery by cesarean section. There is also an increased risk of complications related to the baby. Achieving a healthy weight prior to pregnancy can help you have a healthy pregnancy and baby. Diet is a great place to start to be healthy during your pregnancy. Start by eating regular, well-balanced meals. During pregnancy, you need approximately 300 food calories above your baseline, generally around 2200- 2700 calories daily. You continue to need good sources of protein, vitamins, and minerals, especially folic acid and iron. A pregnant woman will need around 70 grams of protein daily, carbohydrates making up at least 50 % of your daily food intake, and fat at <30% of your food intake. There are some foods to avoid during pregnancy including fish high in mercury, raw or undercooked meat or fish, and unpasteurized products. Some women will speak of pregnancy cravings. We generally always have cravings, but these cravings may be more intense during pregnancy. Occasionally, the cravings may be because of a nutritional need. Exercise is also important, unless your physician has advised against exercise, as there are some contraindications to exercise during pregnancy. Try to exercise 30 minutes a day, five days a week. If you are not regularly active, start slowly by walking for 10 minutes and gradually increase your time as tolerated. Avoid physical activity with increase of risk of falling or trauma. Always speak with your provider if you have questions regarding your diet, exercise, and weight gain during pregnancy. Please note that most women are able to stay within the recommended guidelines by making good choices and staying physically active. Enjoy your pregnancy and be healthy!

Dr. Trevor Bodine Creates Beautiful Smiles One of the greatest gifts a person can receive is confidence – the sort of confidence to smile without self-consciousness or embarrassment. The sort of smile that opens doors socially and professionally for the rest of your life. Dr. Trevor P. Bodine, and the orthodontic team at Bodine Orthodontics, can give you that confidence. We offer many modern options like Invisalign, Invisalign Teen, Insignia, Empower Clear and more to fit you or your child’s lifestyle. In addition to a beautiful smile, properly aligned teeth, lips and jaws help to prevent dental disease, gum disease, jaw problems and uneven wear of teeth. Today, orthodontic treatment is simple, convenient, affordable and suitable for individuals from childhood to retirement. Choosing orthodontic treatment means making an investment in your future. Orthodontics is about much more than just straightening the front teeth, although many times that may be all that needs correcting. Orthodontists must complete an intensive 30 month residency, after completing four years of dental school and earning their DDS, in which they receive advanced training in facial growth and development, smile esthetics, TMJ function and how all of these factors along with straightening the teeth blend to create a beautiful, healthy smile and bite that will last a lifetime. Dr. Bodine believes that every smile is unique and needs to be treated as such. That’s why from the moment you first call to schedule an appointment to the time your treatment is finished, Dr. B and his staff are committed to providing exceptional, individualized orthodontic care for every patient. At Bodine Orthodontics we offer a complimentary orthodontic or Invisalign exam, where we take photos of your smile and teeth as well as radiographs to help Dr. Bodine see how the jaws relate to one-another. After a thorough exam completed by Dr. Bodine, we will go over your pictures and x-rays so that you can have a clear picture of what treatment Health & Wellness

I am a Family Nurse Practitioner and I own Family Focused Care and Health Fusion of Texas in Prosper. I live in Prosper with my husband of 26 years and our daughter. Our daughter attends Prosper High School and we love being a part of this community and its small town pride. My primary mission is to serve others by helping them heal- mind, body and spirit. When I started my clinic, I set out to provide a clinic that offers quality affordable healthcare, supports the community where I live, and serves those in need. It is my belief that everyone’s purFamily Focused Care pose in life is to serve others. Therefore, I try to keep my focus on serving my patients, my community and my staff. The fact that patients need quality affordable healthcare will never change and is even more important with the upcoming uncertain healthcare changes. I believe that Advanced Practice Nurses can adequately fill the inevitable void in primary care. I opened Family Focused Care, a full service family practice, in Prosper in 2011. Family Focused Care provides basic medical care including physicals, sick visits and management of chronic illnesses. We have been in business for 2 ½ years and currently have 6 full time staff members. I opened a second clinic in 2012, Health Fusion of Texas. We provide Bio-identical Hormone Replacement as a safe alternative to traditional synthetic hormone replacement. I take a lot of pride in spending time with my patients to get to know them and build a relationship as a partner in their health.

Town of Prosper Employees Respond to the Ice Storm
These are employees who were recognized for either dedicated service above and beyond their jobs or who submitted an idea that improved a process or saved the Town money. Front row, left to right, Town Manager Harlan Jefferson, Code Compliance Officer Trish Eller, Firefighter/Paramedic David Yarbrough, Administrative Assistant Angela Tucker, Police Officer Marty Nevil, Building Official Wayne Snell and Assistant Fire Chief Stuart Blasingame. Back row, left to right, Payroll Clerk Pamela Clark, Town Council member Danny Wilson, Utility Billing Administrator Kelly Vanaman and Town Council Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Kenneth Dugger
December 5, 2013 brought about a debilitating ice storm to North Texas. Our town was hit particularly hard, with over ½ - 1” of sleet and ice accumulations. As school and town activities began to shut down in anticipation of the treacherous conditions, our Town of Prosper employees kicked their responses into high gear. In a display of reinforcing the Town motto: “Prosper is a Place Where Everyone Matters,” a number of employees undertook the task of assisting and supporting residents, neighbors and each other during what is being called the Ice-Pocalypse of 2013. Here are but a few examples of the courageousness, service and dedication that Prosper residents are so fortunate to receive from our Town employees. During the height of the bad weather, Fire Chief Ronnie Tucker and Assistant Fire Chief Stuart Blasingame were out most of the day Friday and the entire weekend helping residents who found themselves in passenger vehicles that were either incapacitated, stuck in ditches or trapped on patches of ice. Chief Blasingame estimates that the number of motorists assisted to be in upwards of several dozen, with many of those on Custer Road or the Dallas North Tollway. Many others were

waiting for rescue on Coit Road and Prosper Trail. While out assisting those stranded and in need of rescue, the two remained in constant contact with the Prosper Dispatch Office, as they surveyed and recommended which streets around Town were in most need of sanding. That information was then relayed by the Communications Officers to the Public Works Department, which then sent crews out to complete the task of clearing and sanding. Chief Blasingame also cautioned those communications officers whose shifts were beginning about the street conditions and personally picked up several employees and brought them to work in his vehicle. He stayed in constant communications with the dispatch office to ensure their safety and comfort. Meanwhile, members of the Fire Department and Police Department continued to scan the streets for stranded motorists and either pulled their cars to safety or transported the occupants to their homes. At the same time, Assistant Police Chief Gary McHone, his wife Susan, and their children offered to go to the grocery store or get anything employees at the Fire, Police and EMS Departments may have needed. Manuel Parga, Public Works, responded to virtually non-stop calls for sand to treat streets. He was obviously tired, but remained very polite and accommodating to the requests. And, even though his vehicle kept getting stuck while attempting to distribute sand, he continued to respond. Travis Kvaal, Water Department, was also extremely busy as he received call after call to deal with residents’ burst water pipes. He was always eager to assist and travelled out on the icy roads in an attempt to help residents with their water pipe issues. Police Officer Brandon Jones continually drove out to other workers’ homes and followed them into the office to ensure they arrived safely. Town Manager Harlan Jefferson expressed his thanks and admiration to the workers, both those who were singled out, and those who were not identified but continued to work tirelessly throughout the incident. “That’s how we live the motto, everyone in Prosper does indeed matter,” he said.
-Town of Prosper Dispatch ActivityThursday, December 5th through Tuesday, December 10th: From Thursday evening through Tuesday morning, the Town of Prosper’s Dispatch Office received 392 calls into dispatch and had 156 calls for service. These included, but were not limited to: 3 major accidents 4 minor accidents 2 family disturbances 1 theft 12 water pipes bursting Numerous motorists assists (a lot these being on Frontier Pkwy, Prosper Trail, Coit Road and Custer Road) Multiple fire and burglar alarms (all appearing to have been weather related)

Devotional - In His Presence
We
all love new beginnings. And as we begin the New Year and a fresh start, I want to remind you that the life that we share in Jesus Christ is new life! It is life that our Lord gives us and it is an incredible life ... it is a dynamic life ... it is a powerful life ... a supernatural life! In fact, if our lives are not supernatural, they’re superficial. It is the supernatural life of the Lord Jesus Christ that transforms us and makes us brand new. We need only look to one man who demonstrates and declares new life in Christ perhaps more than any other—Saul of Tarsus, better known as the Apostle Paul. In Acts we read of the amazing conversion of this man who was absolutely and completely turned around by the power of new life in Jesus Christ.
By Pastor Jack Graham
On the road to Damascus, Saul came face-to-face with Jesus Christ, blinded by the glorious light of the Living Lord. And he cried out, “Who are You, Lord?” Upon hearing, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” Saul’s reply was powerful in its simplicity: “Lord, what do You want me to do?” There is nothing more exciting than when someone who was lost is found and is completely transformed. I want to ask you today, have you been so transformed by Jesus Christ that He is the absolute Lord of your life? Does He reign as King in your life? As we begin this New Year, I want to challenge you to do as Saul did and ask, “Lord, what do You want me to do?” And under His leadership, commit to doing whatever it may be. By His grace, that is a resolution you can keep. Dr. Jack Graham is pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church, which has campuses in Prosper, Plano and Dallas.

National Night Out 2013 in Prosper was one of the most successful and well-attended in our history. The firefighters from the Prosper Fire Department held a moment of silence ceremony at the time each plane hit the World Trade Center in 2001. A bugler played TAPS at the times the planes crashed and on display was a piece of the WTC acquired to use in a monument to the 9-11 Attacks. Firefighters also placed 343 flags in the front lawn for each firefighter who lost their life that day. It was the greatest loss of firefighters in history. Fire Departments across the country have made a promise to NEVER FORGET the courage and commitment to duty the men and women of 9-11 showed the world.

The Town of Prosper made the Top 20 list of CNN Money’s Least Crowded Towns subcategory in the Best Places to Live list. After all, this is a place where locals funded and built their own playground.” Town Manager Harlan Jefferson had this to say, “We’re appearing on people’s radars in more and more ways. Our task is to ensure that our growth is purposeful, meaningful and in keeping with the wishes and desires of the people who live here.”
