Letter From The

L P & Magazine TM

It’s SUMMERTIME in Prosper! School is out, the pools are open, baseball season

is in full swing, the days get longer, the music gets louder and friends and family gather together to celebrate. This is a great time to entertain, as the days aren’t yet unbearably hot and there is much to celebrate with graduations and successful completions of the school year. We hope that you will join us again on June 7th for Friday at the Park! Last month was a FABULOUS time, although a bit chilly. This month, we’ve added a few surprises for your enjoyment, and the movie feature is ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH. Don’t forget your blankets and chairs – and we will again have concessions to help raise money for our charities! We would like to express our appreciation for all of you who attended our first Meet the Candidates Event on May 6th. It was a wonderful opportunity for the voters to listen to the candidates, and really get to know them, and hear their views and values. We are blessed to live in a community with such servant minded volunteers and leaders. We had many great candidates, and would like to congratulate the winners of the May 11th General Election: Mayor Ray Smith, Councilman Meigs Miller, Councilman Mike Korbuly, and PISD Board Members Mark McGuire, Jim Bridges and Mary Lou Smith. As a Town and as a district, we can be proud of the mutual respect, admiration and professionalism shown by the candidates during this campaign. And, finally, in light of the tragedy and devastation in Oklahoma, we extend our condolences and prayers to those families who lost so much. It is during difficult times like these that we cling to our families, are reminded of the things that truly matter, and show appreciation for the people in our lives who mean so much. We are so proud of our Town and of the way that people have stepped up to help with the relief efforts. Please continue to keep these communities in your prayers during the healing process and the rebuilding phase. With Prosper Pride,

Health & Wellness

Healthy S olutions by Dr. Jon Thomas

June 10-16 is National Men’s Health Week. Although many men are reluctant to go the doctor, it is important that men recognize the importance of having a primary care physician. For men of all ages, it is never too early to start coming to a family physician for the following: -Interview regarding personal health history and family health history -Overview of dietary choices, meal habits, nutritional status, exercise and lifestyle habits -Surveillance of height, weight, and body mass index -Yearly complete physical exam -Yearly lab work that includes screening

~ Men’s Health ~ for many general medical problems -Evaluation of heart health which may include an EKG -Examining for cancers of the prostate, testis, colon, and skin, especially if your father or male relatives have had these types of cancers. -Reproductive health problems, including prostate enlargement, urinary difficulty, or erectile dysfunction -Smoking and tobacco cessation and moderation of alcohol intake. All smokers should ask their doctor about the long term risks associated with smoking and smokeless tobacco, as well as excessive alcohol use. Your physician

will recognize that change comes gradually, and will partner with you to motivate and assist you in quitting smoking or drinking, through education and sometimes with medication. Marital health, family health, and occupational stressors. When dealing with a stressful situation, frequent visits to a family physician can provide an excellent support system. Call the office of Dr. Jon Thomas, Board Certified Family Physician, at 972-3475778, or visit our website at www.ProsperFamilyDoctor.com to schedule your appointment online.

Health & Wellness

How to Maintain an Overall Healthy Lifestyle

Health and wellness are generally understood as multidimensional and holistic, encompassing lifestyle, mental and spiritual well-being, and the environment. Many people typically have the best intentions when it comes to practicing healthy habits but tend to find it challenging to carry out these habits consistently. Attaining and sustaining optimal health and wellness requires an understanding of the various aspects that affect our health and well-being. All too often we get confused by the loads of information fed to us daily from the media and “health experts” telling us to do this and that in order to stay healthy. The truth is, there is no single factor that can quantify optimal health and wellness. Good health comes from following a code of behavior or practices, all of which have an impact on your overall health and wellness. The things you may hear on the news or from your favorite radio show may be great tips that contribute to good health, but you should not view them the only factor in the equation that will lead you to optimal health and wellness. To make it easy, follow these six dimensions of wellness as your guide and set goals within each to achieve your own individual health maintenance plan; occupational, physical, social, intellectual, spiritual, and emotional wellness. For example, try to choose a career that is consistent with your personal values, interests, and beliefs so as to feel a sense of reward. Remaining active and involved will prevent things from becoming stagnant. Come up with a physical development plan. This should consist of a combination of exercise (strength, endurance, flexibility), proper nutrition, and minimal to no use of tobacco, alcohol and drugs.

By: Lauren Caraway

Become aware of your importance to society as well as the impact you have on your environment by enhancing personal relationships and important friendships, and building a better living space and community. Stretch and challenge your mind with intellectual and creative quests by expanding your knowledge and skills. Discover your potential and share it with others. Recognize your urge to seek meaning and purpose in human existence. Your spiritual wellness is achieved when your actions become more consistent with your beliefs and values. Synchronization between internal feelings and emotions and the rough patches of life are important experiences in your search and will help bring meaning to your existence. Finally, manage your feelings and behaviors by assessing your limitations, developing self-sufficiency, and the ability to cope effectively with stress. You should feel positive and enthusiastic about yourself and life. By taking the time to educate yourself and truly understanding who you are and the person you want to be, you can satisfy all aspects of overall health and wellness. Following the steps above can be life changing even in the medical aspect in that it will minimize your stress level, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, reduce the risk for diabetes and heart disease along with many other health conditions. Below are some guidelines to follow to help you set goals within these dimensions and determine what areas need improvement. Life doesn’t have to be so hard. Take it with a grain of salt and overcome tribulations with positive reinforcements! Healthy Goal Setting Guidelines The best goals are S.M.A.R.T. goals. What are smart goals? Simply follow these guidelines when creating your goals lists.

• S: A specific goal has a much better chance of being accomplished than a general goal. Answer the six “W”s; who, what, when, where, why and which. Example: A general goal would be, “Lose weight”. But a specific goal would say, “Join a health club and workout 4 days a week.” Or “Commit to 80% of my diet being fresh produce and lean meats and allow only one cheat meal a week.” • M: Establish concrete criteria for measuring progress toward the attainment of each goal you set. Ask the 3 “how’s”; how much, how many, and how will I know when it is accomplished. When you measure your progress, you stay on track, reach your target dates, and experience the exhilaration of achievement that spurs you on to continued effort required to reach your goal. • A: As you identify goals you develop attitudes, abilities, skills, and financial capacity to plan your steps wisely and establish a time frame that allows you to carry out those steps. When you list your goals you build your self-image and see yourself as worthy of these goals, and develop the traits and personality to attain them. • R: Be realistic with your goals. They must represent an objective toward which you are both willing and able to work. A goal can be both high and realistic; you are the only one who can decide just how high your goal should be. But be sure that every goal represents substantial progress. • T: A goal should be grounded within a time frame. With no time frame tied to it there’s no sense of urgency. If you want to lose 10 lbs, when do you want to lose it by? “Someday” won’t work. But if you anchor it within a timeframe, “by July 1st”, then you’ve set your unconscious mind into motion to begin working on the goal. T can also stand for Tangible – A goal is tangible when you can experience it with one of the senses, that is, taste, touch, smell, sight or hearing. When your goal is tangible you have a better chance of making it specific and measurable and thus attainable.

We determine our goals based on experience and on what we want out of life. Some dream of getting married and having children. Some wish for an academic career or to own their own business. Some want to start a nonprofit organization, travel, or Entertainment

simply live a healthier life. The most important thing to remember is that no matter what our goals are, not to compare them to others. This only causes us to have a difficult time focusing on our own needs. Focus, consistency and persistence = SUCCESS! www.Live-Prosper.com |

Friday at the Park P

rosper is a town rich with family values, giving hearts and strong community ties. Therefore, the concept for Friday at the Park was a natural fit! Bringing our community together for games, entertainment, food and an outdoor movie, while helping to raise money for our local non profits was a great recipe for success! We presented the first event night on May 3rd, and although the weather was a bit chilly, we entertained over 300 guests! The Cell started the evening off for the kids with finger painting and a guest appearance by Coach Wallace Wright. Born and raised in Tampa, Florida, Wallace was recruited and played football for the University of North Carolina, was member of the track team and majored in Exercise and Sports Science. After his college career, he signed as a free agent with the New York Jets in 2006, where he spent 4 years. He then signed a 2 year deal with the Carolina Panthers, followed by a free agent contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012. Coach Wallace is now a member of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. He has a passion for health and fitness, as well as working with kids of all ages. “I want to make them better athletes and individuals…on and off the field!” While Coach Wallace was at Friday at the Park, he worked with the kids on Speed and Agility, Individual and Team Races, and Football Games and Long-Ball Passes. The kids also enjoyed field games, LEGO racing and playing at Windmill Playground. The Prosper Police Department graciously provided popcorn for all and we sold hot dogs, drinks and candy to raise money for our charities – Cornerstone, Project Graduation, Prosper Open Foundation and Bethlehem Place. At 8:15, as the sun began to set, “Wreck it Ralph” played on the big screen! Families snuggled on their blankets, ate their popcorn and enjoyed a wonderful movie under a beautiful Prosper sky! On June 7th, we’ll come together again at Frontier Park to enjoy another fun evening of games and a showing of “Escape from Planet Earth”. We also have the pleasure and honor of featured guest speaker from The Cell, Caitlin Carter. Caitlin is currently on the U.S. Skeleton Team, and during the sliding season, she lives at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, NY, while traveling to various skeleton tracks in the U.S. and Canada for training. We will again serve hot dogs, candy and drinks, and all money raised will benefit our local charities…we hope to see you there!

In His Presence

Sunday Afternoon Recently my younger brother and I, along with our two young sons, experienced the grandiose Texas Rangers stadium on a beautiful Sunday afternoon for the first time. This was the final game of the series between Boston Red Sox and the beloved Rangers. Just as we entered through the center field gates, the crowd rose to their feet. The die-hard Sox fans rose in applause as David Ortiz with his broad frame approached home plate. As we sprinted to the right field upper deck to catch a view of this modern-day legend in the making, the crack of the bat echoed throughout the seats of the nearly 50,000 fans that were in attendance. #34’s thunderous swing resulted in a long fly ball headed for the foul pole where we were standing. We watched with jealous anticipation as the home run landed ten rows from our current vantage point. We were soon marked with a mental image we will never forget. The glove-bearing men who were sprinkled throughout the pop-up seats failed to make an important catch. The baseball connected with the forehead of a middle-age woman and knocked her out cold.

“Wow,” said Justin in amazement, “I didn’t know baseball games were that dangerous.” Entertainment

In an honest and open dialogue with my elderly grandfather last Spring, who holds to an atheistic worldview, he once made a comment I will never forget. “Joey, I love you, but I just can’t buy the fact that God loves me. I have been through too much pain and experienced too much hypocrisy from those who claim to belong to God.” Without retelling all the private details, it is very true that my grandfather has endured some very difficult tragedies during his lifetime. I love Papaw Cook as much as humanly possible and I know of the terrible experiences he has endured at the hands of those who claim Christ. However, I also know there is a grand experience that is taking place and I want more than anything to share eternity with him in the presence of our Heavenly Father. Yes, the ballpark can be dangerous. There are no guarantees of safety, nor can I assure you that the journey is pain-free. There is one promise you can bank on though - God loves you more than you will ever know and He will walk with you through the gates and into the arena. Best of all, when the game is over and the last call has been made, He will see you safely out of the stadium and lead you home. -Joey Cook is the pastor of the Genesis Metro, a brand new church that is currently meeting in homes throughout Prosper and plans to launch weekend worship experiences in 2014. He and his wife (Syndal) & their two children (Ryder, 3 & MJ, 2) live in Prosper and currently attend the main campus of Genesis Metro Church in Frisco. He received his B.S. from ASU in Business Admin and an M.A. and M.Div. from Liberty University

From the mule drawn wagon and horse drawn buggy, the automobile evolved. Thus began the evolution of people moving in and out of the rural community. Surviving the war and the depression, the mechanization of farming provided the next big impact on Prosper’s population. In 1980, the introduction of light industry, combined with the growth of the Metroplex, led to a comeback for Prosper. 2013 Shattered Dreams

Prosper, Texas Photos Courtesy of

First Response Photography 18 | Live & Prosper Magazine

June | 2013

“Shattered Dreams” is an educational experience that reminds us of the dangers associated with drinking and driving. Too many young lives have already been lost and countless others severely impaired because of the tragic consequences of underage drinking. “Shattered Dreams” is about drinking and driving; it is about living and dying. The “Shattered Dreams” program was held on Thursday, April 25 at Prosper High School with the dramatization of an alcohol-related crash complete with police and EMS response, emergency room treatment, family notifications, and the arrest and booking of the driver transported to jail.

“If seeing this can save just one life then it’s all worth it!” -Mike Korbuly The following day, a mock funeral was held at PHS. At the mock funeral there were two coffins set up for all the kids to see. These were the two students “killed” in the previous day’s mock accident. The students left the funeral in a line and as they peered into the coffins saw a mirror image of themselves. During the funeral the students got to hear from a former PHS graduate who was severely injured in a drunk driving accident during her senior year. She spoke by video conference since she is still having health problems related to the accident. She has had 11 surgeries since the accident and is preparing for another. There was also a young woman who spoke to the kids about her experience after a drunk driving accident in which she was the driver and how she has and will spend the rest of her life paralyzed and completely dependent on her family to take care of her. She told the kids that although her friends have moved on, started families, etc, her life is forever frozen by her poor decision. These two stories were heartbreaking and appeared to make an impact on the students. Our own PHS principal finished the ceremony with an emotional story about a high school girlfriend of his who was the innocent victim being killed by a drunk driver.

Financing the Newest Entertainment Venue in Prosper

By Jerrica Anderson, Prosper Bank

June | 2013

Rest and relaxation is warranted after a long day. Whether in the form of dining, shopping, events, or activities, entertainment is vital to provide refreshment and delight. As a community grows the demand for entertainment options increases. Many local entertainment venues are owned and operated by entrepreneurs. Entrepreneurs need capital to start or expand small businesses and must combine their resources with other sources of capital. Sources of capital can include family, friends, venture capital financing, and business loans. Recognizing the importance of small business to the economy, the Federal Government created the Small Business Administration (SBA) in order to provide access to capital that, in most instances, would be otherwise unavailable to entrepreneurs and their businesses. SBA is a small agency with a big mission - “to provide access and opportunity so small businesses can grow, succeed and create an economy built to last”. By providing government sponsored guarantees, the SBA is able to accomplish its mission and provide economic stimulus that is visible in the community. The benefits to a small business utilizing an SBA loan program include: * Longer loan terms for improved cash flow * Reduced equity requirements * Servicing flexibility * Capital access for start-ups and unproven ventures * Capital access for ventures with little collateral SBA offers multiple programs to support the diverse needs of small business owners. While many business owners cringe at the thought of using a government program for financing, the reality is that SBA loans can be just as simple and fund just as quickly as conventional loans. Small businesses such as restaurants, movie theaters, salons, merchants, and even ice cream parlors can be eligible for SBA programs due to the simple fact that they are small businesses. Although different from traditional loan programs, SBA loans are often a good fit for small business owners as well as their lenders. The key to a stress free SBA loan closing is to partner with a lender that has extensive experience in underwriting and funding SBA loans.

managed by the SBA to the PLP lender. Lenders are considered for PLP status based on their record with SBA, and must have demonstrated a proficiency in processing and servicing SBA-guaranteed loans. PLP lenders must also meet rigorous performance requirements to maintain status as a PLP lender. The greatest benefit of the PLP program to a borrower is turn-around time. By using a PLP lender for SBA loans, a borrower can, in some instances, get a preliminary approval in as little as 24 hours from the time of application. The next time you unwind at your favorite entertainment venue, remember the fact that the SBA often has a role in bringing an entrepreneur’s dreams to life. O

ne thing is for certain about me…I love to entertain! Not much makes me happier than good friends and great food! Many of my favorite memories revolve around spending time with friends and family in the comfort of my own home. Since we are talking entertainment this month, I wanted to share with you some ways to think outside the box and to get creative with your entertaining space! Sometimes you might feel that you don’t have the right space or ambience to entertain, but sometimes you just need a little creativity. Because party goers actually like to hang out in the kitchen, it’s completely acceptable to take advantage of the kitchen as part of your entertaining space. You can always transform your countertop, island, or kitchen table into a bar or buffet serving area. When trying to create ambience or decorate for a particular theme, an interesting tablescape in the kitchen or dining room is fun to look at, and it can be a conversation piece as well. I’m also a huge fan of candlelight. Nothing softens a room like the glow of candles. Overhead lighting fixtures like chandeliers can also be decorated or brought into your theme. Taking advantage of that opportunity also allows the table top real estate to be used for food and drinks. If you have a large crowd, seating and table space are often an issue. Move the furniture around if you need to. A long coffee table with pillows or foot stools as seating would work great in the living room. Expanding your current table with leaves or adding card tables to the ends works as well. If it’s good weather--take the event outside. That extension of your home can be a lifesaver when the time is right. Large folding tables, front porch steps, or a grassy backyard is a great way to maximize your space. You can also turn your backyard into an outdoor movie theater with just a projector and a white sheet. If you happen to have a fireplace or firepit, it’s a fabulous place to roast s’mores with the kids or enjoy a nice glass of wine with your friends. However you entertain, be sure to take time to stop and enjoy. Focus on what’s important: the people around you. Cheers! Throw the Best Party on the Block!

Nothing brings people together quite like a neighborhood picnic or family celebration. So, gather up neighbors, friends and family for a celebration of great food and fun. Keep the food simple. Ask everyone to bring a favorite side dish so you only need to grill up the hamburgers and hot dogs. Of course, you’ll also want to whip up a few special treats. What could be better than a popcorn bar? Popcorn is both good and good for you. It’s a whole grain food that is not only low in calories but also makes a great addition to many recipes. Because, sometimes, a sweet indulgence is just what you need. Set out large bowls of popcorn along with shakers of garlic salt, cumin, lemon pepper, dry taco seasoning mix and Parmesan cheese for extra flavor. Add dried fruit, nuts, pretzel sticks, grated cheese and chocolate chips for a make-your-own trail mix option. Complete the popcorn bar with a few sweet surprises like delicious desserts made with freshly popped corn. For more creative recipes, visit www.popcorn.org. Double Chocolate Popcorn Balls Yield: 18 balls 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup corn syrup 1/4 cup butter or margarine 2 tablespoons cocoa powder 8 cups freshly popped popcorn 1 cup milk chocolate candies Combine sugar, corn syrup, butter and cocoa in medium saucepan; bring to a boil. Add popcorn, stirring until evenly coated. Remove from heat. Stir in milk chocolate candies. Cool slightly. Shape into 2-inch balls.

Host an Extraordinary Outdoor Bash

What do you get when you combine great food, good company and a beautifully set table? One truly memorable party. No matter what the reason for the gathering, find your inspiration from the splendor found outdoors. Picture a rustic table set under the olive trees in the Italian countryside or warm, gentle breezes rustling through a gorgeous garden in the South of France. Nature draws you in, invites you to sit down and encourages you to savor special moments. Create the same experience for your guests at your home. Set a wooden table under shaded trees or a covered patio then

gather several chairs around. Keep decorations simple and let the natural elements set the mood. There is something about flowers that instantly makes any gathering feel special. Place several large sunflowers into a vase for the center of the table – or trim the stems off your favorite blooms and float them in a large serving bowl. For another simple centerpiece, line several glasses or small bowls down the center of the table and place a single blossom in each. No flower arranging skills required. Carry out the alfresco theme with dishes inspired by nature, such as Pistoulet dinnerware from Pfaltzgraff. Reminiscent of the light and colors of Southern France, the collection features colorful renderings of flowers, vines, and vegetables set against wide watercolor washes.

Here are few more easy tips to make your next outdoor party a charming and memorable event: * Choose music that is light and uplifting. Make sure it isn’t so loud that guests can’t carry a conversation. * If you use a tablecloth or runner, strategically place small bowls or serving pieces, such as a Pistoulet Le Petite Platter, around the table to keep the cloth secure. * Slip sprigs of green inside the folds of the napkins for a decorative touch. Tuck flatware inside the napkins to help keep the linens from blowing off the table. * Mix earthy elements into the table decor. Make your party a winner, naturally, by adding pinecones, moss, or small flowers to decorative Pistoulet bowls. * Select several smooth stones and write each guest’s name on them. These organically chic place cards make a memorable party favor. * Serve a signature drink named after the theme or celebration of the party. * Place votive candles in clear containers or glasses for a casual, romantic glow. The secret to great entertaining is keeping things simple. Parties should be uncomplicated, easy and just as much fun for the hosts as it is for the guests. Start with a simple menu and then get everyone outdoors to enjoy the splendor of warm breezes, lush trees and colorful flowers.
