he kickoff to the 2014 Summer Series was a tremendous success!! The crowd began to show up around 5:45 in an attempt to grab the best spot on the hill to watch Disney’s Frozen on the 20’ inflatable movie screen. It was a relaxing evening for the families, complete with grilled hot dogs, burgers and BBQ. We also had plenty of activities for the kids to enjoy, music and the weather was perfect! Everyone had a great time, Lucy Scholl gave an incredible concert and the kids all ran up to the screen to sing and dance during the movie. Thanks to the generosity of the community we were also able to raise over $600 for Cornerstone NCT from the concession sales, Kona Ice and Chefs on Scene. A picture perfect evening in Prosper!

With Growth Comes Challenge
W
ith the 2013-2014 school year in our rearview mirror, I could not be more proud than to serve the great families of Prosper ISD. It has been a memorable year celebrating so many successes of our teams, organizations, and individual students. I am thankful that we have a teaching and support staff that truly cares about our students. With that said, sometimes despite our best efforts, we fall short of your and even our expectations but resulting with a renewed commitment to learn, improve, and serve the students of our community in the best possible way. That commitment will be strengthened as we take on the most significant growth in our district’s history. Over the last five years, PISD has basically doubled in student enrollment, which stands today at 6,462 students and has made PISD one of the fastest growing districts in the State of Texas. Believe it or not, that pales in comparison to what is on the horizon. The district demographer projects that the PISD enrollment will reach approximately 16,000 students in five years and 30,000 students in ten years - unfortunately that is not a typo. These are not numbers that we are celebrating, but we are doing our very best to prepare for what is coming our way. As a reminder, Prosper ISD could reach approximately 50,000 students at build out, but that will ultimately be determined by how the remainder of our district is ultimately zoned. Based on what we know today, we are projecting approximately 20-25 elementary schools, 12-15 middle schools, and 5-7 high schools. As mentioned, these projections could change somewhat based on the final zoning of our entire district. People often ask why school district boundaries
10 Live & PROSPER Magazine | June 2014
Drew Watkins, Ed. D. Superintendent of Schools Prosper ISD
are not consistent with city or town boundaries, which would likely minimize confusion. The reality is that school district boundaries are among the oldest political boundaries in the state – many, if not most, over 100 years old. Towns and cities generally start small and once incorporated grow over time through annexation. Some school districts across the state have up to fifteen different cities and municipalities in their respective school districts. Geographically, Prosper ISD is made up of the Town of Prosper (55%), City of McKinney (20%), City of Celina (12%), City of Frisco (10%), and the City of Aubrey (2%) – all of which make up Eagle Nation. We have challenging days ahead, but there is nothing we cannot do together to maintain the excellence of our great school district thanks to the ongoing support that you provide. Although the 2013-2014 school year has just finished, we have been working for months and will continue through the summer in preparation for an even better 2014-2015 school year. Please remember that you can always reach out to us with any questions that you might have regarding any happenings involving PISD. And finally, I want you to know that I sincerely appreciate the privilege of you allowing me to serve the families of Prosper ISD. Enjoy your summer!!

Healthy Solutions Nutrition Labels Decoded Tips for Interpreting Nutrition Facts Labels
Take a trip to the grocery store and you’ll encounter miles of aisles stocked with thousands of food products. Every product has a story to tell or better yet, sell. Information printed on packages is helpful but it’s often confusing and even a bit misleading. While lists of ingredients and the Nutrition Facts panel are there to help shoppers choose foods to fit their nutritional needs, it’s not always easy to interpret. Learning how to decode the jumble of numbers and percentages is the first step in shopping for healthier foods. “The best guide for making decisions affecting your diet is the nutrition facts panel, which is regulated by the FDA and for meats and poultry by the USDA,” said Carolyn O’Neil, registered dietitian and nutrition advisor for BestFoodFacts.org. “The Nutrition Facts panel lists all of the important specs, such as calories, fats, sodium, fiber, sugar and several key vitamins and minerals.” Nutrition label 101 Here are some of O’Neil’s tips on understanding nutrition labels, so you can be a more informed consumer and make healthier decisions for your family. • Always note serving sizes: While a food or beverage may seem like a good nutritional fit, the first thing to notice should always be the serving size. Watch out because if you read that a serving contains 100 calories, for instance, that
14 Live & PROSPER Magazine | June 2014
may be for 8 ounces of a juice beverage and the container may hold 16 ounces. • Be aware of unhealthy contents: If looking to limit fat, sodium and sugar, pay close attention to these call outs on the label. Some foods might deliver more than your daily limit for sodium! Remember that trans fat should be avoided completely. • Look for the good stuff: A healthy diet consists of vitamins and nutrients which nutrition labels also spell out. Go for foods that are good sources of the good guys - dietary fiber, vitamins A and C, calcium, iron and potassium. • Don’t be fooled by healthy looks: While package design may illustrate people engaging in healthful activities, pretty farm scenes and adorned with “healthy” words, note that the FDA does not regulate the use of creative brand names. As always, it is the nutrition facts label where a consumer can see what’s really inside. • Trust health claims: The FDA closely monitors the use of health claims on food packaging. So, if you see wording such as “heart healthy,” you can be confident the company had to meet nutrition criteria set by the FDA. Prepared with nutrition label know-how, shoppers can put this valuable information to work to make food shopping easier on the next trip to supermarket. For other tips visit www.BestFoodFacts.org. “The Right Thing To Do” by Stuart Blasingame, Assistant Fire Chief Town of Prosper
“Our family is so humbled by the kindness in our community of Prosper: from the hours that the Prosper Fire Depar tment give towards the monetary collection like this one for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and other charities, to the countless number of calls that our First Responders rush to answer each day. Fire Chief Ronnie Tucker, Assistant Fire Chief Stuar t Blasingame, and our Prosper Fire Depar tment are truly the Heroes here. We are so honored to live in a town such as Prosper where our Fire Depar tment not only answers emergency calls to help its citizens in times of need, but it also takes the time to recognize a young man who did a small good deed, and in such a memorable and hear tfelt way. It is with so much gratitude that we want to recognize Mr. Tucker, Mr. Blasingame and our Prosper Fire Depar tment. They are the true heroes.” - Christin Caple 16 Live & PROSPER Magazine | June 2014
O
n the morning of May 9th, 11 year old Brooks Caple was on his way to Rogers Middle School. As his mom’s car approached the intersection of First and Coit, Brooks saw Prosper firefighters, who were collecting money for Muscular Dystrophy Association Fill the Boot Campaign, running back to the fire truck to respond to an emergency call. Unknowing to the firefighters, a five dollar bill fell out of one of the boots in the race to the truck. As the firefighters pulled away from the intersection with lights and sirens blaring, Brooks told his mother, Christin Caple, that he saw money fall to the ground. The money was retrieved and Brooks told his mom they had to get the money back to the firefighters.
“I’m really lucky that Brooks is my brother. I’m very proud of him. He definitely did the right thing. He is the best brother in the whole entire universe!” - Berkely Caple (Brooks’ sister) Just after school let out, the doorbell at our fire department rang. As I opened the door, I quickly recognized the Caple family. After a brief discussion with Christin, Brooks’ mom, he let me know why he was there. He told us what he saw and that they retrieved the money. Brooks handed over the five dollar bill. I told Brooks how proud we were of him for doing the right thing. If you know Brooks, you know he is a little shy. He acted like it wasn’t that big of a deal and said “It was the right thing to do”. After a high five I explained to Brooks that although many kids knew that was the right thing to do, not everyone may have made the same decision he chose. I told him there was no doubt that his parents were bringing him up right and teaching him the difference between right and wrong.
After the Caple’s left the fire station I visited with our Fire Chief, Ronnie Tucker, about what had just happened and how proud I was of this fine young man. Chief Tucker said “I wish we could do something nice for him. What could we do?” I replied, “How about a ride to school in the fire truck, every kid would enjoy that!” It’s something we don’t do often, but Chief and I both felt this was the perfect reward to show Brooks our appreciation for his good deed. After getting his mother’s approval, I had a few discussions with Prosper resident Marc Fein, news anchor for NBC5, Michael O’Keefe with First Response Photography, and of course Heather and Jason Reynolds with Live & Prosper Magazine. Everyone I spoke with loved the story and wanted to be a part of it. The date was set, and on Tuesday May 27th, 2014 all of us met at the Caple’s home to surprise Brooks at 7:30 in the morning. The doorbell rang and when Brooks opened the door his eyes were as big as the moon. Surprise! Five firefighters, 2 photographers and a news crew were standing there to shock the poor little guy into oblivion. I told Brooks why we were there and that we wanted to take him to school in the fire truck. Before we could leave, Channel 5 interviewed him in the driveway. The shy Brooks told the reporter why he made the decision to bring back the money. “The firemen needed it. It seemed like the right thing to do. I knew it wasn’t mine.” As any 11 year old would be shy with a camera in his face, we joked that poor Brooks looked like he was being interrogated and probably hadn’t even finished his Cheerios. We loaded Brooks into the front Captain’s seat and we caravanned to Rogers Middle School. Brooks was met by Principle Holly Ferguson, Superintendent Dr. Watkins and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Goddard, all of whom shook his hand, hugged him and told him how proud they were of his decision to do the right thing. Brooks smiled as he went through the door with his fellow classmates looking on, and I can only imagine there might have been a little jealousy along with some curiosity. It didn’t take long for the word to get around about why he was treated as our hero for the day.
On behalf of the Prosper Fire Department, we are proud of Brooks Caples’ decision and so pleased that we were able to pay it forward. As I told Brooks, some may say “Oh…it’s only five dollars but that may be the five dollars that comes up with cure for this disease.” Congratulations to Brooks for making the decision to do the right thing and to Christin and Kyle Caple for instilling the importance of honesty and integrity in your children. PRESTON ROAD
by Bill Hays
In
the early 1800’s herds of Buffalo and Indian tribes made a trail along a ridge about one mile east of the current town of Prosper. ( Near Coit Road) This ridge (later to be called Preston Ridge) ran from the Red River and then south through western Collin County, Dallas County, and continued south to near Austin, Texas. In Collin County this ridge divides the watersheds of the East Fork and the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. In Collin County this ridge came through Gunter, Celina, Richland, Prosper, Rock Hill, Frisco, Lebanon, Alpha, Addison and then into Dallas.
In 1838 (two years after Texas gained its independence from Mexico) the Republic of Texas appropriated money for a road to run from Waco north to the Red River. In 1841 the soldiers of the Republic of Texas surveyed the route and it is the oldest north-south road in Texas. Also, at this time it was the most westerly north-south road in Texas. In Collin County the road basically followed the route used by the Buffaloes and the Indians. The road has had many names over the last 160 years. It has been called the Military Road, The Road, The Central National Road of the Republic of Texas, The Dallas Road, Preston Trail, Preston Road, State Highway 14 and State Highway 289. In the 1840’s the trail became a part of the Shawnee Trail. The cattle were driven from South Texas up the trail and crossed the Red River at Preston Bend (earlier known as Washita Bend) or Rock Buff Crossing, which was near Preston Bend. After the cattle crossed the Red River they were driven to the cattle markets in Kansas City, St. Louis and Chicago. The old Barlow (Collinsbrook Farms) place east of Rock Hill was a stopover at night as they had a spring fed stream that the drovers could water the cattle and rest for the night. The trail
18 Live & PROSPER Magazine | June 2014
was also used by settlers that were coming to Texas. The Republic was giving free land to get people to move to the area from the Northeast. Thousands of immigrants used this trail headed south and thousands of cattle used this trail headed north. Many times they would meet on the trail. There were no cattle drives during the Civil War. After the war, cattle driving on this trail soon began to be difficult because much of the land was being settled and fenced. Also, the Longhorn cattle brought in a tick which caused other cattle to become sick and die. The Longhorns were immune from the disease (called Texas Fever). Also, carpetbaggers and renegade Indians were a
The part of the trail that ran from the Red River to Dallas was named Preston Road. It was named after Colonel William G. Preston. Colonel Preston had built a Fort where the trail crossed the Red River near Washita Bend (later Preston Bend). There actually was a town named Preston that was built where the trail crossed at Preston Bend. This location is where the Washita River flowed into the Red River from the Oklahoma side of the river. When the Corps of Engineers built Lake Texoma in 1944 this area was covered by the lake. In 1926 the Texas Highway Commission designated Preston Road as State Highway 289. For a short period of time Preston Road was State Highway 14 in the Prosper-Frisco area. When the road was originally surveyed is was generally a straight line. However, over the years the farms and fences changed the direction and it became a road of many turns. The land west of Prosper was very fertile for farming. There is an area of land that is west of the ridge and is about eight miles wide (from east to west) and about 40 miles long (north to south). It is in Western Collin County and Eastern Denton County. This land has been called many names over the years. It has been called The Flats, Elm Valley, Elm Flats, Elm Bottoms and the Blackland Prairie. This section of land starts south of Frisco, runs west of Prosper and then north to Celina and follows the ridge. The land west of Prosper is now a part of the Dallas North Tollway and residential and commercial development is beginning to replace the farming land.

problem. As a result a new trail was started west of the current route. It ran from Fort Worth north to cattle markets in Abilene, Kansas. This was called the “Chisholm Trail”. However, Preston Trail was still an important route for immigrants and freighter traffic in north central Texas.
In 1859 the State of Texas appropriated most of the land in this area to be used for the Education System. In 1876 the county courts ordered the tracts of land to be reduced (most to 160 acre lots) so the land could be sold easier. In 1880 it was discovered that the land around the current town of Prosper was very valuable for farming. Dr. A. T. Bryant of McKinney purchased most of the land in the area that is now called Prosper.

West, and He is We. Lucy Scholl, the EP, comes from the intrinsic honesty of a young song-writer. Lucy’s favorite track, “Blue Eyes,” is the song which won her the PHS Talent Show. She can’t wait for those who heard the song back then to hear the new arrangement.
If
Lucy Scholl had her way, she would live in a small town forever. But this past year, Lucy made the jump from home’s comfortable stage made of hearthstones in pursuit of Nashville lights. After years of performing as a singer, she ventured into songwriting after being challenged by her piano teacher. Out of that challenge was the song, “Walk with Me,” which was written for a girl struggling with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. “Walk with Me” quickly became the anthem for charity walks sponsored by the National Arthritis Foundation. While she was a student at Prosper High School, Lucy earned the prestigious Texas UIL Outstanding Musician award, performed with the PHS Show Choir and played lead roles in musical theater productions including, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Beauty and the Beast and Oklahoma! She won the Prosper High School Talent Show in 2013. Soon after, Lucy’s enterprising work won her an opening gig in Dallas. Tyler Ward, who is an independent acoustic rock YouTuber listed #5 on Billboard’s Top Uncharted 100 list, created a fan-voting campaign in which YouTube viewers would determine the openers in each city on his tour. Lucy’s warmup performance on the Dallas morning news proved why YouTube viewers loved her; she is as comfortable performing for thousands as she is for the camera or for just a single listener. During the past year as a busy college sophomore, she toured as a featured soloist with The Nashville Tribute Band, while traveling back and forth to record her debut EP in Nashville. Her self-titled record was produced by Brandon Metcalf, who recently produced albums for Secondhand Serenade, Due
Lucy was excited to share her music with her hometown crowd last month. She performed all the songs from her EP as well as other favorites at an EP Release Concert on May 2 at 3Rs Ranch here in Prosper. She drew a great crowd, and then stole the hearts of all of Prosper at the May 17th Summer Series event, where she gave an unbelievable outdoor concert for the crowd. Lucy says she got to where she is by never saying no. Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) President, Bart Herbison, commented about her passion, “Get with Lucy, or get out of her way.” This summer, she will be busy performing all over the United States. She’s opening 5 concerts for country trio Due West, performing as part of the Nashville Tribute Band and is traveling to Austin, Chicago, Denver, Nashville, Los Angeles and New York City for her EP Release Tour. Be sure to check out her new single “Feel Alright,” available on iTunes. Street Reconstruction Projects Crews to finish before school opens in the fall
The next phase of Prosper’s road modernization is to begin on Monday, June 2 as reconstruction of First Street from Coleman St. westward to the Dallas North Tollway is set to begin, says Public Works Director Frank Jaromin, P.E. “The First Street project from Coleman to the tollway will be an asphalt reconstruction,” he said. “That differs from Preston Road and some other larger projects around town, which are concrete. That means that we’ll finish the project in a much shorter time frame.” The asphalt reconstruction provides a cost-effective, easy to manage solution to roadway reconstruction. The quality of the roadbed is comparable to concrete, although it may have a slightly shorter life span. However, the longrange plan for the affected section of First Street calls for an eventual conversion to concrete once development reaches

the area.“The condition of First Street from Coleman to the tollway is in such disrepair that we must come in and shore it up until the area’s expected development is ready to occupy that corridor,” he added. During reconstruction, traffic will be required to move in a westward direction only. Twoway traffic will resume once the reconstruction work is complete.
complete, crews will move to Coleman Street and complete an asphalt reconstruction on that road between Broadway Street and Prosper Trail. As with the other two reconstruction projects, the work will require traffic to move in one direction only. Coleman Street will become a one-way northbound thoroughfare through the construction phase.
At about the same time, work on Coit Road from First Street to Frontier Parkway will undergo the same asphalt reconstruction process. As with First Street, traffic will be required to adhere to one-way movement. During the Coit reconstruction, traffic on the affected portion will only move in a northerly direction.
“Our goal is to complete the three streets during the summer vacation,” said Jaromin. “Even so, we may run up against the end of summer, depending on several factors, including weather. Nevertheless, we will still finish before the start of school.” The entire three-street project has an allotted construction timeframe of 120 days from June 2. “We’re confident we can beat that,” he said.
Finally, once the reconstruction of First Street is

Live Life Live Life Camp Grandma S
ummer is just around the corner! It’s a special time for grandparents to invite their grandchildren over for a little “Camp Grandma and Grandpa”. After one of my grandchildren was born, I set up “Camp Grandma” in my daughter’s home while she was recovering from a “C” section with their second child. Perhaps some of these activities may be something you would like to do with your grandchildren. These could also be fun activities for you to do as a parent with your own children this summer. Hopefully, a more relaxed schedule will afford you opportunities to spend time with your child and at the same time, be teaching some important skills.

putting some flowers, veggies, and herbs in pots. Children can learn about flowers, herbs, and vegetables, and what it takes to help them grow strong and healthy.
- Begin the day with a healthy breakfast. Allow your grandchild to help you make breakfast! You can make breakfast a fun time by putting smiley faces on toast or with your fruit, squeezing your own juice, making pancakes or making ‘silly cereal’. - Yes, chores still need to be done. The good news is that you can get these tasks done by making it a fun time to learn and practice Practical Life skills such as: - clean-up, washing dishes, pouring, spooning, preparing food, sweeping, dusting, folding clothes, getting groceries, setting the table, watering the plants, making the beds, picking up our toys, yard work, and whatever else needs to be done around the house. Little children love to help! It’s not work for them, so you can get these jobs done and still be together. You may want to bake some cookies when you’re done! - Gardening is a passion of mine and I want my grandchildren to learn about it and hopefully, love it as I do. If you don’t have a garden, you can begin with

- May I encourage you to do lots of reading! Cultivate a love of reading by reading to your children and grandchildren. Plan some trips to the library. Check out the wonderful services that your local library provides for children…and they’re free!
- Take walks and be an observer with your child as you check things out such as bugs and birds. And yes, take in the park while you’re at it. Seeing the world through a child’s eyes gives you a renewed perspective. - Museums are wonderful places for children to learn and explore, especially if they have ‘hands-on’ areas for children. Some have a ‘free day’ or reduced prices. - Music soothes the heart, mind, and soul for every age. Expose children to all different kinds of music. We turn on Bach or Beethoven as we blow bubbles, or create “Soap Oceans”. Play jazz and move to the beat. Sometimes we simply lie outside on the blanket or float in the pool listening to music and watch the clouds. And of course, we sing lots of fun songs as well. If your children are old enough, teach them to play instruments. As an added bonus, music (especially piano lessons!) develops both sides of the brain and so it will help your kids get smarter! - Cultivate creativity! Paint, do clay and experience as many art mediums as is age-appropriate with your children. Have a Creative Corner with your old clothes, hats and ties. Put in boxes, toilet paper rolls, and anything you can think of…and watch your children create, play ‘make-believe’ and exercise their glorious gifts of imagination!

- Rainy days are a perfect time to make tents inside the house. Take sheets and drape them over the tables and furniture. Older children get really creative with tunnels and secret places. With older children you can turn off the lights and bring out the flashlights. It’s such great fun! You can even have a sleep-over in your tents! - Go swimming! As a former lifeguard, I firmly believe all children need to know how to swim. And water is a natural tranquilizer for children. It will wear them out in a healthy, natural way. Did you notice I didn’t list watching television, movies, playing video games, texting, or computer games? My rule at Camp Grandma is …Nothing Electronic! Since I’m writing a book on brain research and children’s brains, I know they need a break from it.
In any event, have lots of fun. For me, every time I think of an idea, I drop it into my Camp Grandma or parent Summer Sunshine bag. Enjoy your children and grandchildren…we have them for such a short season. Jody Capehart is married to Paul who plays in the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. This is a true celebration of the great work being done in Prosper ISD and Prosper High School. The goal is now to be in the Top 50 in the State and Top 500 in the nation within two years, Top 25 and Top 250 within four years and the Top 10 and Top 150 within 6-8 years. Go Eagles… WE ARE PROSPER!! Prosper ISD’s Elementary Teacher of the Year for 2013-2014 is Mrs. LaDonna Tullos, Kindergarten teacher at Cockrell Elementary. Mrs. Tullos has been in education for twenty years, with the past six years spent here in Prosper. Jana Thomson, principal at Cockrell, describes Mrs. Tullos as poised, organized, patient and loving. Mrs. Tullos believes that her passion for teaching lies in her love of the children. She states, “When they feel safe, all other pieces of teaching fall into place.” She offers the alphabet as a foundation for learning, therefore a foundation for teaching. Each letter represents an important aspect of teaching. For example, “A” is for appreciation. She must appreciate each and every child for who he is. “G” is for guidance. She will guide her children’s education and will allow them to guide her. “L” is for love. It is a four letter verb that must be exercised daily, for when children know that you truly love them, the problems of yesterday will disappear. And “Z” is for zany. She realizes that the well-behaved child of today may be a little less well-behaved tomorrow, and she will love him all the same. Prosper ISD is blessed to have an educator like LaDonna Tullos. She is a dynamic and loving teacher who touches the hearts of her students every single day.

Prosper ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year for 2013-2014 is Mrs. Kimberly Smith, 5th and 6th Grade Behavior Transition teacher at Rogers Middle School. This is Mrs. Smith’s first year as a teacher. Holly Ferguson, principal at Rogers Middle School, describes Mrs. Smith as a teacher who has been given a gift to touch students’ lives. Her calm presence and level of care and understanding for her students creates an environment where students can find their greatest success. She is dedicated to developing the entire child socially, emotionally, and academically. Mrs. Smith states that her role as a teacher is not to merely fill students with her knowledge, but rather, it is to use her knowledge to pull out theirs. She understands the importance of building relationships with her students to make learning more relevant for them. Mrs. Smith has helped to build a behavior program that is additive rather than punitive in nature, one that focuses on developing the whole child. She believes that the constant pursuit of knowledge is what creates the foundation upon which exceptional teachers stand, and that is the place where she will always strive to plant her feet. Prosper ISD is honored that Kimberly Smith has chosen to begin her teaching career here. She is a perfect example of the passion, dedication, and love needed to make a tremendous impact on students’ lives.

As you sit in the sand looking for something good to read, or pick a movie to escape the hot June sun, there will be so much to choose from. Mysteries, thrillers, sci-fi, biography, history, romance, classics… you can fill your mind with anything you choose. The choice reminds me of a Cherokee story. A wise man describes to his grandson a battle that is waged within all of us. He said, “My son, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside us all. One is evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is good. It is joy, peace love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?...” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one that you feed.” Who will you feed this summer? Will you feed your anger and indignation? Will you focus on something that encourages arrogance and self-righteousness? Will you ruminate on thoughts that are corrosive to the relationships that are most precious and toxic to your spirit? Or will you feed the other wolf? Will you be inspired? Will you learn to see the world from someone else’s point of view? Can you be challenged to be more compassionate, more generous, more forgiving? “Run from temptations that capture young people. Always do the right thing. Be faithful, loving, and easy to get along with. Worship with people whose hearts are pure. Stay away from stupid and senseless arguments.” Timothy 2:22-23 Doug Kriz is the pastor of Grace Christian Church, a young and growing congregation for Prosper. Join us for worship Sundays at 10:30 at Baker Elementary School. www.graceprosper.org.

Celebrate Pizza:
Fun, Easy Ways to Enjoy a Family Favorite Pizza is one of America’s favorite foods, as it is easy to prepare and fun to share. Families are often looking for ways to enjoy this tasty dish and still feel good about staying on track with enjoyable, mindful eating. With the help of the Nestlé Pizza Portion Guide, you can feel even better about serving this family favorite. “It’s all about how much you eat and what else you eat with it,” says registered dietitian Lisa R. Young, Ph.D., R.D., author of The Portion Teller Plan. It’s Easy as Pizza Pie! While assisting in the creation of the new Pizza Portion Guide, one of Young’s goals was to help people “legalize” pizza in their mind, while helping them stay committed to a balanced diet.
44 Live & PROSPER Magazine | June 2014
“One of the best ways to do this is to be mindful of portion size,” says Young. “When you learn ways to eat what you love in appropriate portions, you can continue to enjoy your favorite foods (in appropriate portions) and keep your meals enjoyable and your eating plan on track.” Pizza is what’s called a mixed dish, combining several food groups such as proteins, vegetables and grains all in one slice. By pairing pizza with nutritious side dishes, such as steamed vegetables and fruit salad, you create a complete meal. For a mindful approach to enjoying pizza, Young recommends these tips: • Top it your way: Select your favorite kind of pizza. Consider adding your own various vegetable toppings. • Nutrition facts check: Read the nutrition facts label on packaged pizza you prepare at home (shown per “serving size”).

Family Pizza Night Celebrate this family favorite with a pizza night. Young recommends keeping the night fun by allowing family members an active role in crafting pizza portions tailored to their tastes and needs. Mix and match the following possibilities for a fun and flavorful pizza night: • Line up small bowls, each filled with different toppings to bring color and variety to pizza. • For a fun and unique choice, add in pineapple, strawberries or blueberries. • Add canned beans, cooked chicken, turkey or shrimp to cheese pizza for more protein. • Pizza can be excellent for leftovers. Keep your pizza crispy and bubbly by reheating in a large skillet, toaster oven, oven or grill, instead of the microwave. For more great pizza pairing ideas, visit www.nestleusa.com/enjoypizza.

You Don’t Have to Spend A Lot of Money to Look

One of my favorite tricks to look polished for less is to take inspiration from a celebrity with a body shape and style similar to yours.
BY CAITLIN SKIDMORE
Celebrities have stylists who are paid to make them look great and keep them off the worst dressed list, so take advantage of what they’ve learned without paying the big bucks! Pay attention to the cuts and types of clothing your celeb(s) of choice wear, and try those on for yourself. Using a celebrity as your muse is a great way to push yourself out of a style rut, but be flexible when it comes to clothing items and the celebrities themselves. When you’re critiquing a specific celebrity, be careful not to write off an item of clothing just because you think you won’t like it. Don’t judge an item on its hanger- or on another person! Everyone has to try on lots of things to find clothes that fit them well. Don’t feel like you have to stick to one celebrity or style, either. If you see an outfit you like that’s made up of items similar to some of yours, try pairing them together. Not all of the combinations will work, but I guarantee you’ll find a few new looks. Personally, I prefer a hybrid of classic looks (I love Princess Kate’s style) and boho chic, like Jessica Alba. Jessica is shorter than I am, so her proportions don’t always look right on me, but I like her style, so I use what I have to recreate some of her looks. Here are a few specific examples from my closet: (Kate’s photo: blazer, stripes, wide leg jeans;) I have a striped top, blazer, and wide leg jeans, but because the weather is warming up, I went with a striped dress in place of a top, and chose a lightweight blazer. (Jessica’s photo: button up, sequin skirt) I recreated Jessica’s look for a fun night out look because I have a similar button up and a sequin skirt. And a couple of options that might work with your closet: (Kate’s photo: Polka dot top, black cardigan, jeans;) I’m guessing you’ve got a button up, a cardigan, and jeans in your closet. Put them together for your spin on Princess Kate’s look. (Jessica’s photo): blouse, printed scarf, boyfriend jeans, flat sandals; This layered look is perfect for our current North Texas weather! Pair a filmy blouse with a scarf, boyfriend jeans, and flat sandals. Take a cardigan if you need an extra layer, and shed the scarf when it warms up. Both ladies’ looks are relatively simple, but every piece of clothing fits impeccably. Fit is the biggest secret to looking fantastic. Pair that with your new styling secret, and you’ll be looking luxe for less in no time!
Caitlin Skidmore is a Style Coach and is the author of Greater Than Rubies (greaterthanrubies.net), a life & style blog, where she teaches women how to remix their closets. She also works as the Program Development Coordinator for Cornerstone Assistance Network of North Central Texas, based here in Prosper.

Please bring your family and friends to enjoy this event on June 27th from 1:00pm-‐ 4:00pm at The Initiative Cheer & Gymnastics in downtown Prosper, Texas. We are excited to take part in Olympic Day and the Olympic Movement to encourage and inspire children to lead healthy, active lives. The Initiative Youth Celebration is one of more than 700 events taking place nationwide between June 14 and 30. The events, designed to engage youth and promote the ideals of the Olympic movement, feature athlete appearances, family-‐ friendly activities and interactive learning experiences. Around the world, more than 160 countries take part in the annual celebration. Olympic Day, created in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games, focuses on the Olympic values and ideals such as fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship, which reflect the ideals that The Initiative Cheer & Gymnastics hold in the highest regard. Please contact Samantha Dickey at The Initiative Cheer & Gymnastics to see how you and your family can get involved in this great event celebrating the best part of our town, our children! Call today to pledge your support and attendance and/or participation in this event! We welcome all support in making this event a great success for our children!
