“It’s Pumpkin Time!” W

ell, we’ve successfully made it through the first month of school, and with the cooling of the temperatures we welcome in the long awaited, highly anticipated Autumn Season! October is a wonderful month for family outings at the pumpkin patch, warm hoodies at the football game, fall scented candles burning, pumpkin spice lattes at Black River and Sunday baking extravaganzas with your children. I love this time of year!! Hay bales, pumpkins, scarecrows, Halloween costumes, hot chocolate, pumpkin bread, candles, football, the Harvest moon…I could go on and on about all the things we love about October. And, as always, we are blessed to enjoy them all in Prosper! One of the greatest events of the year for our town is occurring this month…the Homecoming Celebration, complete with a parade for the entire town, spirit week at every campus, Homecoming Mums, Pep Rallies, an exciting Eagle Football game against The Colony, crowning of the Homecoming King & Queen and a dance for the High School students. Homecoming week is enjoyed by every citizen of our town, and it’s amazing to see so many groups and organizations get involved with the celebration. If you are new to Prosper, and haven’t yet had the opportunity to experience Homecoming and/or the Parade, GET READY and BE EARLY!! It is unlike anything you have probably ever seen, and it is proof again that WE ARE PROSPER!! Another great event that you won’t want to miss out this month is Cornerstone’s Vision Dinner & Silent Auction on October 26th at Prosper High School. It will be the event to attend that evening, and we hope that you will join us! As much prosperity as we enjoy in our town, there are some of our neighbors that are struggling and need our help. As a faithful and generous community, we have the ability to make the difference in these lives, and provide the assistance to help break the cycle of poverty. If you have not had the opportunity to listen to the stories of our very own neighbors, please be sure to attend the Vision Dinner. Tickets are available online for only $20, and include appetizers, dinner, guest speakers and a Silent Auction. Cornerstone is also still accepting vision sponsors and table sponsors, so please consider how you, your family or your business can help. This is your chance to GIVE HOPE to those in need – all of us working together can make a difference in our community.

- Breastfeeding An important part of planning for the pregnancy and delivery of a newborn infant is deciding whether to breastfeed or bottle feed the baby. Exclusive breastfeeding is widely recommended and has numerous health benefits for both baby and mother. For baby, maternal milk is the best source of nutrition from birth to 6 months of age. Other benefits of breastfeeding include strengthening the baby’s immune system, reducing gastrointestinal symptoms, preventing common viral illnesses, improving cognitive function, and possibly reducing the risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. For mother, benefits of breastfeeding include faster recovery from childbirth, reduced response to stress, and enhanced weight loss. Long-term benefits include a reduction in the risk of both breast and ovarian cancer and a possible reduction in the risk of heart disease and obesity.

Interestingly, although 75 percent of women initiate breastfeeding, only 44 percent continue breastfeeding at or beyond 6 months. Breastfeeding is recommended at least through 6 months of age, and ideally continuing until 12 months of age alongside the introduction of age-appropriate foods. For women who exclusively breast feed, supplementation with vitamin D 400 international units once a day is recommended. If breastfeeding difficulties arise between birth and the first 6 months of the infant’s life, a lactation consultant is readily available for assistance to optimize breastfeeding.

The Candy Invasion: Preparing for Halloween By: Lauren Caraway Certified Personal Trainer at The Cell Inc. and Independent Beachbody Coach

I

t’s that time of year again where we start to plan for fall weather, special events, and holidays. Celebrating these memorable moments can be fun but it can also be stressful and detrimental to your health if you’re not careful to prepare in advance. Planning not only helps keep things organized but gives you time to look into various ways to make the most of the event. The idea is not only to educate ourselves on how to lead healthy lives but to pass that knowledge onto our youth. As we know, Halloween is right around the corner. Understanding how to allow your kids to have fun while being safe and maintaining their health is some times a challenge. As you become more aware of the risks and benefits you can then weigh your options to decipher what’s best for your family. Consider this; Americans spend a whopping $950 million on Halloween candy every year. So it’s not surprising that an estimated 1 in 3 American children are now considered seriously overweight or at risk of becoming overweight. That’s a staggering 25 million children who are at high risk for high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, bone and joint problems, exercise induced asthma, disturbed sleep patterns, premature maturity, liver/gallbladder disease and depression. That in mind, the idea of handing out “treats” that are laden with sugar (or worse, high fructose corn syrup-HFCS) and chemicals is ill advised. So what are some healthy and fun alternative Halloween treats? Give these a try: temporary tattoos, stickers, playdoh, pencils, fancy erasers, false teeth, kazoos, tiny deck of cards, bubbles, bouncy balls, mini slinkies, natural non-HFCS candy, granola/cereal bars, pretzels, apples (regular or caramel coated), popcorn balls, glee gum, packets of instant hot chocolate, raisins, fruit leathers, prepackaged trail mix/cookies etc. Try to avoid costume jewelry, fake painted pearls and toys from vending machines both of which may contain lead. Also, avoid cheap plastic toys that are likely just going to end up in the trash and off to a landfill. What about your own kids? While you are trying to make better choices on what you give out to trick or treaters, keep in mind that not everyone follows a healthier outlook. So what do you do when your kids come home with a bag full of candy that you would rather they not eat? First and foremost, sit down and sort through the candy and discard any open packages and other things that might look suspicious. Then just make an agreement that there will only be said amount of candy per day and maybe even persuade a trade for some of the healthier treats you may have left over from your stash. The traditional Halloween activities are door to door trick or treating around a familiar Fall

neighborhood but some may be leery of the idea of strangers. There are so many other ways to have fun without going door to door. Try hosting your own Halloween bash or planning a block party by inviting neighborhood friends/family/ kids for a spooky night of fun. Plan a family night at home making fun Halloween treats/crafts and appropriate for their kids. So whether you have have the kids be in charge of answering the door for treaters and toddlers or teens or somewhere in between, you deciding what candy and how many pieces they can rest assured that there should never be a get. Go trunk or treating, to a community event Halloween that goes without newly created, funor even the mall. Schools, local organizations, filled memories. clubs, communities, and churches participate in trunk or treating which is a safe alternative and keeps the kids together. You could also take your kids to a local nursing home. This combines fun with a kind gesture towards others as some of these residents don’t get many visitors so seeing your children is a huge treat. Visit your local fire and police departments. Many ® stations plan a Halloween TC event handing out candy and sometimes even 360˚Of Wellness giving the kids a peek ● Personal Training ● Nutrition ● Lifestyle Changes ● Strength Training inside the fire house or Your Premiere 1-Stop Shop for Family Fitness! police station to see the Youth Speed/Agility/Strength Training | Group Exercise Classes fire engines and police Chiropractic Services | Dietary & Wellness Consultations cars. R

ecently, Live and Prosper Magazine was warmly welcomed into the Prosper Fire Department, where we received a tour of the fire house and had an opportunity to sit down with several firefighters to learn about “a day in the life of Prosper’s firefighters.” After spending just a few short hours with the firefighters, I quickly realized their work goes far beyond blazing fires, hoses, and sirens. Rather, I experienced a feeling of Prosper Pride, grateful to have these outstanding first responders serving our community, and the following words readily came to mind: family, community, skill, trust, and compassion.

schools, as well as daycares and churches, and they also participate in most community events, such as the Windmill Playground build. Visitors are always welcome to the fire house, “We love it; especially kids coming to see the trucks.” And, as a tip, visitors bringing ice cream are much appreciated!

Prosper’s firefighters are highly skilled. Unlike some fire departments, all staff within the Prosper Fire Department are certified firefighters and paramedics, making each staff member highly trained to respond to both fire and medical emergencies. Moreover, the staff frequently undergoes specialized training and drills to maintain their certifications, as well as stay up-to-date regarding new equipment and/ or recommended strategies. Generally, trainings include fire response drills, driver operations, apparatus training, and simulated medical response drills. The Prosper Fire Department serves all of Prosper and also has a “mutual aid” agreement with neighboring towns, including Celina, Little Elm, and Frisco, to provide and receive emergency backup, as needed. In carrying out their duties, the firefighters make use of modern technology, such as iPads and Part 2 by Marla Thomas GPS systems to quickly navigate the roads and respond to calls.

Prosper’s First Responders

Prosper’s firefighters are a family. As the fire fighters shared, life in the fire house is similar to that of a family, complete with the station’s Dalmatian puppy, Smoky. Each shift consists of at least 6 firefighters working 24 hours-on (7am7am) and 48 hours-off. Everyone pitches in to do their share, including going to the store, cooking meals, eating together, exercising to maintain health, and carrying out daily responsibilities, such as “apparatus checks” (i.e., making certain all equipment is working). Just like the homes of many Prosper families, life at the fire station “revolves around the kitchen” and includes a large family gathering table, as well as a fireplace, which was graciously donated to the department. In their own words, the fire fighters explained, “you spend a third of your life with these guys,” “there’s no hiding anything; you know everyone pretty well,” “we’re like a family.”

Prosper’s firefighters are focused on the community. When asked about their involvement in the community, one firefighter shared, “We get a lot of support from the community” and another added, “We help out any chance we get.” For example, the fire department conducts fire prevention programs in the

14 | Live & Prosper Magazine

Prosper’s firefighters trust each other. The unmistakable trust and camaraderie between the Prosper firefighters was evident in their interactions alone, with no words needed to describe it. Yet, one firefighter light-heartedly described their trust by sharing, “I could put $1,000 on that counter right now and it would stay there until the day this place shut down, but you put ice cream there and it’s over!” On a more serious note, the firefighters explained how the captain typically runs command, each firefighter has very specified responsibilities, communication is critical, mistakes are minimized by October | 2013

The Town

working as a team, and, with that trust in place, “It’s like clock-work; once we get off the truck, everyone knows what to do.” One firefighter summed it up best, explaining, “You gotta have that trust because sometimes the guy next to you is all you have to get out of a situation.” Prosper’s firefighters are incredibly compassionate. The firefighters spoke to us with a quiet modesty, knowing the critical importance of their jobs, yet reluctant to boast about themselves. They were incredibly humble and sensitive with regard to the individuals they serve. During our interview, Chief Tucker came to share a thank you letter he had just received from the father of a young man who was seriously injured in a terrible car accident. As the letter was read, the firefighters, most of whom were the ones who responded to the

Fall

emergency situation, respectfully listened and showed gratitude in learning the young man was well on the path of recovery. Clearly proud of his staff, Chief Tucker shared, “That is why they do what they do.” When asked how they manage their own emotions and persist following difficult emergency situations, the firefighters explained that humor and light-hearted joking between each other helps them stay “disconnected” enough to focus and do the job well. One firefighter went on to explain, “Our joking around is not from lack of compassion; it’s a job of the heart. It really is and I really can’t think of anyone up here who doesn’t have a lot of compassion for the people they’re working on. It sounds cliché, but we just treat them as if they’re our own family.”

A Day in the life of Prosper’s First Response Photographer

W

here there’s smoke there’s fire, and where there’s fire, you are certain to see First Response Photographer, Michael O’Keefe, alongside Prosper’s fire department. As Prosper’s official first response photographer, O’Keefe aims to capture emergency scenes, as well as the courageous work of our firefighters, with a high-level of respect and compassion for all those involved. At the young age of 16, O’Keefe’s first camera was placed in his hands and he quickly made good use of it, seeming to be a natural at the outset. Growing up across the street from railroad tracks and being a self-proclaimed “railroad fanatic,” O’Keefe began developing his skills by photographing trains. One day, O’Keefe happened to witness a car accident and, with camera in tow, he readily photographed the scene and was offered money in exchange for his photographs. Little did he know that, starting that day, his childhood hobby would evolve into a lifelong career and passion for first response photography. As O’Keefe described, the job of a first response photographer is 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. That is, O’Keefe constantly has multiple cameras in tow and his police radio on, listening for emergency calls and prepared to drop whatever he’s doing at a moment’s notice to rush to a scene. As O’Keefe shared, “It’s always on my mind; I don’t take a break from it. My most nervous times are when I’m cooking dinner or in the shower because something’s gonna happen and I want to have a jump on it.” As a photojournalist who works for numerous community media outlets, O’Keefe responds to “newsworthy” emergency situations, primarily fires and vehicle accidents. And, when responding, he has several goals in mind. First and foremost, O’Keefe aims to “get on the scene as quickly and safely as possible,” which includes driving the speed limit. Once on the scene, O’Keefe attempts to capture the essence of the scene, as well as the professionalism and bravery of the firefighters “doing what they do.”

16 | Live & Prosper Magazine

Over the years, and by way of some trial and error, O’Keefe has learned the “unwritten rules” of his profession. Such “rules” include understanding and respecting the “operations” of an emergency scene, following the directives of officers, knowing where to park, staying out of sight whenever possible, giving victims privacy, building a trusting alliance with emergency responders, and “trying not to be another thing the first responders have to worry about.” In addition to documenting the news of an event, O’Keefe’s photographs serve several important purposes. For example, O’Keefe’s photographs might be used for “post-analysis,” where emergency responders review photographic documentation of an emergency scene, reconstruct the scene, and use the information to learn from and further improve their skills. Photographs might also be used to showcase equipment/apparatus and/or honor firefighters in action. Naturally, in the face of danger, most people steer clear and, when asked what compels him to seek-out and photograph such dangerous situations, O’Keefe simply replied, “It’s a duty; a calling,” and added, “I’ll drop whatever I’m doing to go to a scene; I feel obligated to these people (i.e., firefighters) to capture what they do.” Undoubtedly, Prosper is a place where everyone matters and O’Keefe’s words epitomize this important vision, as he emphasizes the importance of building trusting relationships and carrying out his work with a high level of compassion for all those involved, both victims and emergency responders. As O’Keefe explains, “We’re the good guys. We’re not the paparazzi; we’re not here to invade your privacy. We’re here to capture history and we’re compassionate about it.”

The People

We Are Prosper!

Give Hope

W

e are very blessed to live in such an influential, prosperous community. And to many outsiders, Prosper is just that…affluent, fortunate and privileged. However, there are many of our neighbors who have grown up in a cycle of poverty, and some who have simply fallen on hard times. As you drive through our comfortable neighborhoods, take a moment to imagine how quickly your situation can change. And how easily the loss of a job or spouse can turn your life inside out. It can happen to anyone, and tragically, it does. The need is great, even in our backyards. That is why our community is so fortunate to have such generous, gracious, charitable residents…and why we are so fortunate to have an organization such as Cornerstone to serve these families in need. Cornerstone’s mission is clear and simple – “Uniting to demonstrate Christ’s compassion by serving our neighbors in need.” The vision is strong, and is one of a community coming together to share the Gospel and help family units escape the cycle of need for good by

providing resources, tools and education. Cornerstone does not provide a continuous stream of financial assistance to families, but they do provide hope and mentoring in an attempt to shorten their journey out of the cycle of poverty. Cornerstone partners with various churches, schools, businesses, organizations and individuals to provide comprehensive assistance to our neighbors in need. Mentoring, education, health, dental and vision care, the school supply drive and Cornerstone Christmas are just a few of the amazing ways that Cornerstone is able to serve those neighbors. Every story is different, every need is unique, and every situation is met with compassion, warmth, love and prayer. In 2012, Cornerstone NCT spoke with 181 families, provided assistance to 34 new neighbors and 17 returning. The total amount of financial assistance provided was over $19,362 and there were 2,263 articles of clothing, various household items and appliances given away. These needs could not have been met without the help of volunteers, who gave 5,672 hours of

their time, a gift valued at over $125,000! Each of us working together and blessing others in whatever we are able will enable Cornerstone to continue to GIVE HOPE to those who truly need it. If you would like more information about this amazing organization, we invite you to join us at the 2nd Annual Cornerstone Vision Dinner & Silent Auction on October 26th. The event will be held at Prosper High School and will begin at 6:30pm. That evening, Cornerstone will share the story of their beginning, where they are today and will cast their vision for 2014. Appetizers and dinner will be served, there will be guest speakers and throughout the evening you will have an opportunity to participate in the Silent Auction for some amazing items! Cornerstone is also still accepting Vision Sponsors and Table Sponsors for the event so please consider how you, your family or your busiess can help. Tickets can be purchased online and are only $20, so please make sure to save that evening on your calendar to enjoy an evening of blessings and do your share to GIVE HOPE.

“When Beth came to us, her husband had told her she and their four children were no longer welcome in his home and had three weeks to move out. He would allow them to take their clothes, but nothing else. Beth was a stay at home mom for many years, but had recently started a low-paying, full-time job. She was able to save enough to make a deposit for an apartment, but couldn’t afford to furnish it. Cornerstone was able to supply all of the basics as well as additional items to make the apartment even more comfortable for the family during their transition. Beth attended our Finance 101 Class, where she made a budget to cover her current bills as well as a plan to move forward. She is still working to secure a better job, but has been able to pay her bills each month.”

The People

Jennifer Lutes Mark and I have been married for 14 years. We have 2 beautiful daughters. Ainsley, 4th grade, and Alli, 1st grade, both attend Folsom Elementary School. Both girls play volleyball and are very active in various activities at their school. There are many things that I love about Cornerstone. One of the main things I love is that God is at the center of everything we do. When I called Wayne with my idea, I was just following through on what I felt like God was asking me to do. As we have grown in the last couple years, we have tried to pay attention to not only where the needs are pushing us to move, but where God is guiding us to go. I also love the hope that we are able to give. Families have a hope for a different future not only for themselves, but for their kids and grandkids. When people who do not live in Prosper look at our town, they see the affluence. However, over the last 7 years, I have witnessed the community gather around many who have had unexpected tragedies occur. But we are also a community that wants to help a family, a child or an adult change their life path for the better. We are a community that wants to make a difference. I am proud to call Prosper my home.

Wayne Bartley My family moved to Prosper in April of 2008 to serve on staff at FBC Prosper. My wife, Amy, and I have been married for over 18 years, and we have one daughter, Kelsie, who is a freshman at Prosper High School. We love the family atmosphere of Prosper and feel very blessed to live in this community. I remember the day Jen Lutes called me on the phone and said, “I think I’m supposed to start a clothes closet.” I replied, “Go for it. You are the perfect person to head that up.” We visited some friends of mine in Fort Worth that run Cornerstone Assistance Network and realized quickly that the clothes closet would be a bandw aid on a hemorrhage. It would simply not be enough. That was how Cornerstone NCT began. The past few years have been an incredible journey with Jen, Caitlin, and our families as they and over 150 active volunteers give of themselves to serve our neighbors in need. I believe Prosper holds the resources and influence to change an entire country, but before we do that, let’s serve our neighbors right here in our own backyard that need to escape the cycle of poverty. Please join us in giving hope to our neighbors!

Caitlin Skidmore My husband Troy and I met at Purdue while majoring in Organizational Leadership and Supervision. We interned in Prosper and loved the people, the area- basically we loved everything about Texas, and hoped to live here one day. Shortly after we got married, we felt the Lord calling us to move back. It wasn’t long before we heard about Cornerstone from Wayne Bartley, one of the pastors at our church. The fact that this brandnew organization wanted to help people transition out of the cycle of poverty captured my heart. Troy and I decided I would quit my retail job and start working for Cornerstone part time. Over the past three years, I’ve enjoyed helping set the organizational structure in place, coming up with ways to track statistics and processes, and planning events to raise funds to meet our neighbors’ needs. But the reason I do this is because a community that pools its skills, time, and money to serve their neighbors in need can empower them to exit the cycle of poverty once and for all. Fall

Prosper ISD News

The Eagle’s Nest Each day during the month of October, Prosper Independent School District will be posting daily safety tips through their Facebook and Twitter feeds for National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM). This is the 10th anniversary of NCSAM, which is sponsored by the NCSA and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The theme this year is “Our Shared Responsibility.” Each week has a different focus in order to help educate each other on various aspects of CyberSafety. Week 1: Stop, Think, Connect & Cyber Security in the Next 10 Years Week 2: Being Mobile: Safety & Security Tips on the Go Week 3: Education & Digital Literacy

Educating those around us, including our children, is very important. Teaching them how to take safety precautions and understand the consequences of their actions can truly make a difference in how they navigate the World Wide Web. According to StaySafeOnline.org, Cybersecurity begins with a simple message everyone using the Internet can adopt: STOP. THINK. CONNECT. For more information go to:

Devotional

In HIS Presence -

The Blessing Experiment

C

ount your blessings. Bless you. Bless this meal. God Bless America. We throw the word blessing around a lot, but what does it really mean? If we bless a meal, does it taste any better or become less fattening? When a child is blessed, do they become more loving, make better decisions, earn better grades or run faster? I imagine some scientist could design some kind of blessing experiment to see if blessing something makes any kind of objective empirical difference. Call me a heretic, but I would be surprised if they found any difference at all. Blessings are not magic words that impart special powers. When we bless someone or something, we are essentially doing two things. First, when we bless, we are acknowledging someone (or something) as a gift from God. We affirm that God has placed them in our life on purpose and for our benefit. A blessing is a gift from God, and every gift from God is a blessing. Second, when we bless, we promise to treat someone or use an item in a way that gives glory to God. A blessing is to be treated with respect and reverence. A blessing is a tool that God has placed on earth to accomplish God’s work. A blessing

exists to be a blessing. Rachel Naomi Remen writes of the Friday afternoon tea she shared with her Grandfather as a child. After tea, her Grandfather would light a candle and pray their ancient Jewish prayers. When he was done, he would place a hand on Rachel’s head and thank God for her and for making him her Grandfather. Then he would mention her struggles or triumphs in the last week. If she failed, he would talk about how hard she tried. If she made a mistake, he would give thanks for her honesty. Then in the candlelight, he would give his blessing. Those blessings stood in such contrast to the rest of Rachel’s life. At home, she was driven to succeed. Her grades could always be higher. Her achievements could always be greater. Her appearance, her behavior, her work were never quite good enough. Rachel’s grandfather passed away when she was seven years old, and she was afraid that his blessings would no longer be with her. She discovered, in time, that his blessings

would never be gone, because she had learned to see herself through her Grandfather’s eyes and in some mysterious way through God’s eyes as well. Blessings are not magic words. You don’t need to know Hebrew, you don’t need to understand the entire bible, you don’t need a priest or a robe or a seminary degree or even a high school education. A blessing is any word you offer to another that affirms them as a gift from God. Beloved. Gifted. Remarkable. A blessing is any word that gives someone a glimpse of themselves through God’s eyes. A blessing is a challenge and a commission to live as though God intends to use you to bless others. So how about this blessing experiment: Offer a blessing today. Bless your children. Bless your friends. Bless our teachers. Bless our town’s public servants. Bless someone who is low and needs to

remember what God is doing. Walk up to them, look them in the eye and tell them what you see. “You are so patient and caring as you teach my child. God bless you.” “You keep our community and my family safe and secure. God bless you.” “You pick me up when I am low and you keep me grounded when I get too full of myself. God bless you.” Our blessings might not make someone run faster or make better grades, but there is no denying the power of naming what God is doing in each of us. “And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you… and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” Genesis 12 Doug Kriz is the pastor of Grace Christian Church, a young and growing congregation for Prosper. Join us for worship Sunday at 10:30 at Baker Elementary School. www.graceprosper.org.
