appy Anniversary to our L&P Readers! We would like to thank you all for your support, encouragement and appreciation you have shown us over the last year. We are proud to be your voice, and are committed to providing you the stories about The Town, The People and The Pride of Prosper. There are so many fun things coming up in September, and once again, we are humbled and blessed to work, represent and make our home in a town as amazing as Prosper. We would like to congratulate Prosper on being named to CNN Money’s “Best Places to Live” list!! The town was included in the Top 20 of the “Least Crowded Towns” subcategory. The nation is watching and catching on to what we already know…WE ARE PROSPER!! As the summer season fades into the cooler days of fall, we hope that you are able to get out enjoy some fun events with your family. If you are new to town, please take the time to explore all that Prosper has to offer. We are special and unique because of our people and our values, and in order for us to maintain our small town feel as we continue to grow, we must foster and feed our roots. Each year, as a new school year begins, so does the excitement of a new athletic season. Our community rallies and celebrates these new beginnings unlike any other I’ve ever experienced. Our traditions run deep, our commitment is strong and our expectations are high. The programs and our coaches are focused on developing character in their athletes and teaching life lessons on the field, the court, the water or the course. As our high school principal, Mr. Wright, so eloquently puts it – “Teamwork makes the Dream Work!” Athletics isn’t only about winning or losing…it is about developing cohesion within your team, doing things the right way and carrying yourself with pride and dignity no matter what the outcome. And under the leadership and mentoring of our coaching staff, Prosper student athletes exemplify these characteristics. Prosper is an extraordinary community, and young or old, we love our Eagles!! We start our children as Eagles in Kindergarten and let them grow through the ranks as Eagles until they graduate. We instill in them a sense of spirit, belonging and community. Our community flocks to support our Eagles, whether we know them personally or not. Prosper lives, eats and breathes PRIDE, and that is what makes us victorious. That is what takes us to a higher level time and time again. We do it right, we always challenge ourselves to do it better, we strive for excellence…and in the end, regardless of the final score, we always win! WE ARE PROSPER!!

- Women’s Health Women’s health is an integral part of

Family Medicine and healthy living. Here are some general guidelines to ensure comprehensive care:  Annual well women exams, including breast exam, pap smear, and bi-manual exam are recommended by age 21 or at onset of sexual activity. Pap smears screen for cervical cancer. If yearly pap smears are negative for 3 or more consecutive years, frequency of exams can be reduced to every 2-3 years. Abnormal pap smears are referred to OBGYN for further workup.  The HPV vaccination is recommended for all women before the age of 26, with consultative discussions about the vaccination beginning around age 16. HPV is a virus that causes genital warts and may cause cervical cancer, which can be prevented by the vaccination.

 Screening for colon cancer is recommended at age 50. A referral will be made to a specialist to perform a colonoscopy, a procedure that may detect and remove colon polyps which may become cancerous.  Screening for osteoporosis (weakening of the bones) is recommended at age 65 and involves a bone scan, also called a DEXA scan. If Osteoporosis or osteopenia are noted, treatment usually consists of supplemental calcium and vitamin D. If osteoporosis is severe, medicines called bisphosphonates (eg Fosamax) may be indicated.

T

To Stretch or Not To Stretch Written by: Lauren Caraway Certified personal trainer at The Cell Inc. and Independent Beachbody Coach

here is much debate when it comes to the topic of stretching. There is no doubt that stretching has its benefits, however it is important to know the various forms of stretching and which is appropriate for your current activity. Stretching is important for not only your body but also for your mind. It helps improve your overall flexibility and range of motion, assists in correcting posture by lengthening tight muscles that pull areas of the body away from their intended position, can potentially decrease injury by preparing muscles for work before activity and increases circulation allowing blood and nutrient supply to muscles thereby possibly reducing muscle soreness. In regard to mental health, even a short amount of stretching (10-15 minutes) can calm the mind, provide a mental break and give your body a chance to recharge. If you’re looking to simply improve your overall flexibility and range of motion you might take into consideration what your daily habits consist of. Deviations and muscular imbalances typically stem from poor posture habits and previous injuries. If you think about it, the majority of jobs today involve sitting at a desk, in a car, on an airplane

also a good way to help prepare the muscles for work by breaking up fascial adhesions and manipulating certain neuromuscular receptors to let the muscle release any tightness without lengthening the muscle fibers in a way that would be counterproductive. Once you have completed your workout, the best way to cool down is to perform static stretches while the muscles are still warm. With this type of stretching you are gradually lengthening the muscles to an elongated position (to the point of discomfort) by holding that position for a minimum of 30 seconds. As mentioned previously, this type of stretching is also ideal for improving overall flexibility and range of motion. You may experience a warm sensation within the muscle but continuing to hold this position allows the golgi tendon organ (which detects and responds to muscles tension caused by muscular contraction) to override the muscles spindles (which are sensitive to muscle lengthening) allowing the muscle to relax and release tension. Then, and only then, are you truly getting the most out of your stretch. So don’t waste your time going through a 10-15 minute pre-workout stretching routine. Simply perform movements that mimic the work soon to be performed, then go to work! All of these forms of stretching are important for optimal function during activity and at rest so, make time for each as your prepare for your day.

The Cell & Elite Performance Training, Proud Sponsors of your Prosper Eagles

etc. Then, of course, you go home to relax and you’re sitting on the couch or in your favorite chair. Moral of the story, we’re doing a lot of sitting. Because of the time spent in the seated position many people develop tight hips and chest muscles which in turn pull the shoulders and head forward and cause many to experience lower back pain. So in this case, focusing on stretching the muscles in the chest and hips would be most beneficial while concentrating on improving core strength and posture. In regard to exercise the main questions are when and what. Confusing stretching with warming up is an all too common mistake. Rather than stretching before a workout, you should perform lighter intensity activity that mimics your upcoming workout- walking before running, slow cycling before biking, dynamic stretching movements (slow controlled movements through full range of motion) before weight lifting or athletic performance. It gives your body time to adjust to the higher demands of exercise so that your breathing rate, circulation and heart rate can all increase in order to supply the working muscles with the necessary blood, nutrients and oxygen they need to perform optimally. The Town

Live & PROSPER Magazine recently had the opportunity to sit down with Fire Chief, Ronnie Tucker, and we are proud to begin a series over the next several months – Prosper’s First Responders. We will take a look at the Prosper Fire Department’s history, culture, service and future. One theme rings true in every aspect of the department and that is the devotion, servitude and commitment of each individual firefighter. There is a sense of brotherhood that simply doesn’t exist in any other organization. Prosper’s community values and pride are as strong in the Prosper Fire Department as they are in our residents. Chief Tucker describes his career choice as a calling and instills in each individual the sense of ownership in the department and firehouse as that of a family. Although a young department, their professionalism, eagerness and high performance standards are unequaled anywhere. The Prosper Fire Department began as an

12 | Live & Prosper Magazine

all volunteer department in 1952 and over the years has grown tremendously into a department with 21 employees and a $2.5 million budget. In fact, the department is excited to announce that plans to build

Prosper’s First Responders Part 1

by Heather Reynolds

Prosper Fire Station Number 2 are already underway! The future site of our second station will be on the west side of Prosper in the area of Teel Parkway, just north of Highway 380. There are multiple firms bidding on the

construction of the new station and the plan is to have it open by the middle of 2015. In anticipation of the new station, there is much to do in a short time-line including station design and construction, ordering of apparatus, hiring and training firefighters, etc. This will be a fully functioning station within the department and will employ additional firefighters to protect and serve the west area of Prosper. Central Station on First Street will remain and will serve to protect the east area of Prosper. In the long term, the Prosper Fire Department will have several different stations throughout the town to ensure timely response to the town’s emergency needs. At the town’s build out, there could be as many as 6 to 7 individual stations. They are working diligently now to secure dedicated land for those future sites and locations will be determined by the thoroughfares September | 2013

The Town

and the density of our town. The placement of these important new stations isn’t necessarily determined by the amount of calls that the department receives, but rather how long it takes to respond to a 911 call. If a home starts on fire, a citizen stops breathing or has a seizure; the travel time it takes the station to respond to that call is evaluated more closely by the department than the number of times that the station takes a call. When responding to calls, we are privileged to have each of our firefighters certified as EMT Paramedics, rather than basic EMT’s. This difference in certification and training allows them to administer advanced life support, medication and IV’s. With the exception of X-Rays, most life-saving efforts typically performed in an Emergency Room can be done in the back of an ambulance and administered by our First Responders. Each year, they undergo rigorous training to obtain recertification and ensure their skills are up-to-date. This is yet another example of the commitment that our department has to the town and its residents. Next month, we’ll examine the life of a firefighter, how the department works together to develop cohesiveness, foster teamwork and support one another through traumatic events. We will also introduce you to Micheal O’Keefe, Prosper Fire Department’s “official” photographer, describing what his role is and how he’s able to photogenically capture the daily life of a firefighter. Prosper ISD News

The Eagle’s Nest A few weeks before school began, Prosper High School hosted a critical incident training. Common practice among law enforcement agencies nationwide, this was a joint effort between Prosper ISD Police, the Prosper Police Department and several other agencies in the Collin County area.

The combined training event was done in an effort to better prepare the town and school district, should a critical incident ever occur. It was unique opportunity and the first of its kind, due to the newly established Prosper ISD Police Department. Special thanks to the Denton County Swat, Plano PD Bomb Squad, Colony PD Swat Team, various volunteers from the PISD School Theatrical Department; Prosper Police Department, Prosper Fire Department, Prosper ISD and Fire Marshal Bryan Ausenbaugh for assisting in this important training. Live & PROSPER Magazine was honored to be invited to attend this event. It was an eye opening experience that evoked some uncomfortable emotions within us. However, it is comforting and reassuring to know that our First Responders are continually training and preparing to protect and serve our citizens and our children, even in the case of the unimaginable. We are devoted to our schools, residents and town, and will continue to support and highlight all of the amazing activities that happen within our district.

Find something that truly expands, challenges and deepens your faith. Surround yourself with a good team. Take time to pray.

The opportunities for victory are all around. The impact our words and actions have on real people are beyond measure. Will you be prepared when that crucial moment arises to make God’s love a reality? It’s game time! “Exercise daily in God—no spiritual flabbiness, please! Workouts in the gym are useful, but a disciplined life in God is far more so, making you fit both today and forever. You can count on this. Take it to heart. This is why we’ve thrown ourselves into this venture so totally. We’re banking on the living God, Savior of all men and women, especially believers.” Timothy 4:8-10 (The Message)

What would happen if we thought about our faith in the same way? Too often, we treat our faith like life insurance. We think about it two to four times a year when some action is required, and we are glad we have it if a crisis comes up. But God doesn’t think of us a policy holder. You are indispensable. Kent Scott

Football Coach Scott came to Prosper High School as the Head Football coach in 2006, a transitional year for the program on multiple levels. That year, we successfully moved from the 2A division into 3A, and ended the season with a winning 8-3 record. The following year was also successful, and in 2008, Coach Scott, his staff and players brought the Prosper community a State Championship! While championships are always the expectation, this team brought the reality and raised the bar for the program, the district and the community. The Prosper community expects championships and demands excellence – those are Prosper values, and Coach Scott wouldn’t want to live or coach in a community that felt any other way.

Our 2013 Eagle Football program is prepared to compete at a high level of competition again this year. Falling just 4 yards short only 2 games away from a State Championship game last season, these Seniors are hungry to bring their school and community another State Title. We may have graduated some extremely talented young men from the 2012 team, but the heart, passion and desire in this year’s squad is unparalleled. These players, the coaching staff and this team have an amazing chemistry, and the way that they pull things together on the field is truly what makes the difference. Coach Scott has a true passion and clear love for the game of football and for his athletes. There are so many lessons that can be taught on the field that just can’t be taught

in the classroom. The coaches that trained, encouraged and invested time in him as a young man and player made lifelong impressions on him that he continues to draw from today. He feels it is his duty to the athletes, their parents, the program and the community to help develop these boys into young men. He and his staff are helping them prepare for the real world and teaching them how to handle their business the right way. If these young men are taught to do things the right way, then the winning will come – it is a by-product of the hard work and dedication that goes into handling themselves as young men that are prepared for success in the world and their lives after high school.

Athletic Training This is my second year as Assistant Athletic Trainer at Prosper High School, and I have never been happier to be an Eagle! I grew up in Allen, TX, and graduated from Allen High School. I then graduated from Oklahoma State University with my degree in Athletic Training. My husband and I moved to Prosper one year ago and we

have two dogs, Sage & Shiner. As an Athletic Trainer, my goal is to promote the health and safety of all of our athletes on the field and in their daily lives. I enjoy watching our athletes succeed on the field and in the classroom. My vision for 2013 is to keep everyone as healthy and injury free as possible!

Volleyball Born and raised in St. Louis, MO, I attended and played volleyball at Saint Louis University. Go Billikens! My greatest memories of college were coming back from being down 0-2 against Arkansas and down 23-27 (we played to 30 back then) in the third set to beat them in 5; and beating Indiana and Oregon State to win the Indiana Tournament. I graduated from SLU in 2006 with a BA in Political Science. I spent 4 years at Stephen F. Austin as an asst. volleyball coach with the Ladyjack Volleyball Program, and received my Masters in Public Administration in 2008. I have spent the past 3 years as the Varsity assistant at Lovejoy, helping them win 3 straight UIL state titles. This is my first year at Prosper and I couldn’t be more blessed to be in such an amazing community. Wearing the Green and White and being an Eagle means to many things to me. Prosper is a unique community in the sense that it’s a Fall Sports Issue

growing city yet still has a small-town feel. The entire community is behind Prosper HS, and it is so neat to walk into a gas station or a restaurant and have people whom I have never even met, say hello and call me by name. Eagle Pride is about doing the right thing all the time, working harder than all of our opponents, and representing our town and school to the best of our abilities. My vision for this season is to compete for a district title! I want to advance to playoffs, and I want to go deep into the playoffs. A lot of talent graduated from the traditionally “Top” 4A teams this past spring, and right now I believe that the door is wide open for someone to step up and take control. The Coaches of Fall Cross Country

Joshua Allen

My name is Josh Allen, and I’m going into my 3rd year as head cross country coach here at PHS. I love my job. My favorite thing about coaching distance runners is watching them improve and realize their potential when they accomplish something they never thought was possible. I’m proud of the way the runners support and build each other up to get to the next level.

Swimming & Diving My name is Dave Dillon. My wife, Norma, and I moved to Prosper from Paris last year when I took the Head Coach position at Liberty High School in Frisco. My brother has lived here in Prosper for over 14 years, so it was a little like coming home where family is. When Coach Timmons left this last spring to work on his PhD, the opportunity to coach and teach in the town where I live and to take a growing program and expand it into all areas of both the school district and the community was a dream that I couldn’t pass up. As I am more and more intertwined into the fabric of this great district and town, I am impressed with and overcome by a swelling pride that comes from working and being associated with everyone from the administration of the District, my peers in both coaching and teaching, the parents, and the general support of the community. With the combination of everything that Prosper offers, how can we not Fly Like an Eagle? The Swimming and Diving Program is actually still in its infancy stage. It was just a few years ago, that Cameron Green, the first swimmer, represented Prosper and started what will become a legacy. I’ve actually been involved with Prosper swimming from the beginning, as Cameron

The 2013 Eagle Cross Country season has the potential to be a big breakthrough for these teams. We’re going to continue putting in the miles and work necessary to give us the opportunity to have success at the District 9-4A Championships in October. Away from the course, my wife Jessica and I just celebrated our 7th anniversary. We keep ourselves busy chasing around our two little girls, Cecelia Raine (4 1/2) and Vivienne Armelle (turns 3 September 13th).

Wrestling This is my third year as the Head Wrestling Coach at Prosper High School. We have both a men’s and women’s program at PHS. We also have a youth program (ages 5-14) called the Mighty Eagles. Let me address each one Darren Snyder individually. Men’s Program: We have made great strides in men’s wrestling. Three years ago we were 12th (out of 12) in Districts. We climbed up to 6th two years ago and 3rd last year. We had 12 wrestlers qualify for the Regional Tournament. We had two state qualifiers and one alternate. Both of our qualifiers, Ryan Regan and Adrian Beltran, placed at State (5th and 6th respectively) for the first time in Prosper History. Our goals this season are to win Districts, Regionals, and State. Women’s Program: The biggest change in the women’s program is the number of girls involved. The typical season had just one girl out for wrestling. Last year, that number had grown to 4 girls on the team. We had a District Runner-up, Kristin Sneed, who also placed 5th at Regionals which made her a state alternate. All firsts in Prosper Women’s Wrestling history. Our number one goal is to add girls to our program. We would like to have 6 or more girls in the program this year. Competitively, we want a top 3 at Districts, top 6 at Regionals, and 2 or more state qualifiers. Kid’s Program: Last year was the inaugural season for our little kid’s program. We had over 60 kids involved in youth wrestling last season. Our number one goal with kids is to make sure every youngster (ages 5-14) in Prosper is aware of our wrestling program. We want kids growing up knowing that the opportunity to wrestle is just as available as playing baseball or football. Our two main objectives this year are to get a junior high program started and to enroll over 100 kids in our youth program. Because of our recent success we have added a full-time assistant, Gabe Reyes. We also have newcomer, Matt Warnasch, coming on board this season. They will be instrumental in reaching our goals at all levels.

Horsepower Like No Other -by Jennifer Sanchez

Y

ou have likely driven up and down Custer Road north of Hwy 380 dozens of times and noticed a small sign at a driveway that reads “ManeGait”. It marks a pretty property with grazing horses, a small house, a barn, a covered riding arena, and an outdoor riding arena. There are rolling hills, ponds, pastures and trails. What you may have not noticed as you ride in your 150 horsepower car is the special group of people who ride the horses that power the mission of ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship. Founded by Bill & Pris Darling, ManeGait offers a therapeutic riding program that teaches equestrian skills while encouraging independence and providing substantial physical, behavioral, social and emotional progression for children and adults with all types of disabilities. Classes are offered regularly and some riders prepare to participate in equestrian competitions. The physical progress that riders make is remarkable. ManeGait is where some riders take their first steps, say their first words and achieve an emotional connection; all because of the power of riding the horse. ManeGait doesn’t just benefit the riders and their families. It is also enriches the lives of volunteers and equestrian professionals. Volunteers pair with individual riders throughout therapy Fall Sports Issue

sessions. Under the supervision of ManeGait staff, approximately 350 volunteers serve ManeGait’s riders each week, filling the roles of horse leader or side walker. Volunteers also assist with general maintenance of the property, as well as providing support for

professional needs and event planning and implementation. Each volunteer provides an average shift of two hours per week, giving ManeGait 700 volunteer hours weekly. Without the volunteers, ManeGait would not be able to serve more than 110 riders every week. On Saturday, September 21st, ManeGait is hosting a free, family-friendly outdoor movie event presented by HomeCEU Connection to introduce

more people to its unique therapeutic programs. Activities begin at 6:00pm and will include pony rides and a bounce house prior to showing “Despicable Me” at 7:30. Concession snacks will be sold and all proceeds will benefit the services that support ManeGait’s mission to enable “children and adults with disabilities to move beyond their boundaries through the healing power of the horse and the dedication of a professional, caring community.” ManeGait is located at 3160 N. Custer Rd. For more information, contact 469.742.9611 or visit http://www.manegait.org/

Females, Firearms & The Frisco Gun ClubA New Kind of Family -by Jerah Hutchins

hen you hear the words “gun range”, the words “female friendly” don’t always follow in harmony. The Frisco Gun Club (FGC) and Mel Pokorny, the facilitator of the Frisco chapter of A Girl & A Gun (AGAG), are going to change that. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, female gun ownership has increased 77% since 2005. But why? Because women are starting to realize that rape whistles and buddy systems are grossly insufficient when faced with violent crime. Guns are a great gender equalizer and while owning a gun is great, you are a liability unless you know how to properly use it. In the event a firearm is necessary, knowing exactly how to use it can mean the difference between your own life and death. By meshing the AGAG organization with FGC’s facility we create more than just a place for women to safely engage their firearms. We create a place that offers fun female social

interaction, education, a place to sharpen an invaluable skill and most importantly, emancipation. Walking off of the line after shooting a good grouping with your cased firearm in hand and knowing that you have the ability to protect yourself and your family from harm is one of the most liberating feelings in the world. You also become a part of a likeminded community that shares your feelings and offers an environment that fosters camaraderie. AGAG is about women uplifting other women through education and reminding us that we don’t have to be victims. The FGC will hold two events a month with AGAG; one being “Breakfast & Bullets” in which we will meet early for breakfast, then hit the range for some shooting and education. This monthly event will cater to women with more daytime schedule flexibility. We will also offer a monthly “Girls Night Out” meeting in the evening which will benefit ladies who have more evening flexibility. We want to offer more

BLACKHAWKS FC: Shhhhhhhhhhh! Keep it quiet!!! The secret is getting out…one of the best small competitive soccer clubs in the North Texas area, the Blackhawks FC continues to build on its original philosophy of player development, high quality trainings and treating its parents and players with honesty and integrity every day. Having rooted itself in the McKinney area in 2010, they have an expanded base of members…all with a keen focus on those core principles and the faith that success will come. Many club members reside in Prosper and Frisco. Managing Partners, John Cope and Matt Alexander, are slowly making their mark in the super competitive soccer landscape that continues to develop in North Texas. The club may be outmatched by the bigger clubs in their namesake, but don’t mistake the experience! Cope spent almost 10 years in professional soccer in the US in different team operations roles and now he’s settled into giving back. The truth is he just loves to be on the pitch wearing his boots each session. Several of John Cope’s teams are Prosper based as well as numerous other clients seeking one-on-one trainings to develop specific parts of their game. On Mondays evenings in the Fall, you’ll find him leading PASO skills sessions for the Recreational League.

Homework: Healthy Habits or Hassles?

By Jody Capehart

As you start back to school, think about creating a mindset to form new habits to usher in a positive start for your child. As you think of homework, do you anticipate a good year or does your heart sink? For some, a collective heavy sigh may come as you think of the potential homework hassles starting up again. This year, let’s turn those potential homework hassles into healthy homework habits! How do you utilize your student’s learning style in order to set up a homework environment conducive for successful study strategies? It can be as simple as A-B-C. It starts with stopping to observe your child to see how he/she learns best and use that as a starting place. A:

Attitude is everything! Share with your child that homework is important! It is not a punishment given by the teacher, but rather an opportunity to enhance what is being taught in the classroom. If you are positive about homework, your attitude is contagious to the children.

B:

Believe in your child! You build up your child’s confidence when you communicate belief in him and how he learns. It can be difficult for a student to be in classes all day trying to learn information that may or may not be presented in the way he learns best. It is very draining if one feels stupid and can’t “get it,” even with a great deal of effort put forth.

C:

Communicate with your child. Try saying, “Let’s set up a homework area that is a match to the way you learn. Help me to understand how you learn so we can make it easier for you to do your homework.” Try out one of the options listed, and if it doesn’t help, then move on to Plan B.

For starters, is your child more analytic or global? For example, if your child tends to process things in a sequential, logical manner, he is probably more of an analytical learner. These students see the details first, then the patterns, and finally the whole picture. In other words, they go from part to whole. Your global learner sees the whole picture first, then the patterns, and finally the details. If your child is more creative and thinks outside the box, she may be more global. Consider this. Perhaps it explains why analytic students do not get overwhelmed with doing their homework. They go from the part to the whole, step by step. They see one problem at a time, complete it,

26 | Live & Prosper Magazine

and then go on to the next problem. Global students, on the other hand, see the whole thing, get overwhelmed, feel certain they can’t get it all done, shut down, and may not finish the task. It is not a factor of IQ; it is a matter of brain functioning. Here is another interesting difference. Analytical thinkers are usually more comfortable working at a desk or table, with bright light such as with windows, bright lamps, or overhead lights, and they often prefer a quiet environment to do their homework. Whereas global thinkers usually prefer to work with everything spread out on the floor or sitting on the couch or their bed with a softer light such as a lamp. They also prefer a sound component such as music, or yes, the television on while they work. On the home scene, well meaning parents, in their quest to try and help their children, often purchase a desk, chair, and lamp to set up a “good” homework environment for their student. But when the parents goes in to check on the homework status, they discover the desk has become a holding place for stuff and the student is sprawled out on the floor or on the bed. What is a parent to do? Translation: the parent has set up an analytic learning environment and the child may be more of a global learner. You might say to your child, “We are going to try a different learning

CoffeeBar & Grill

environment for you to do your homework. If it works and your grades go up, great, we will go with it. If it doesn’t work for you, we will go to plan B.” The goal is to find the learning environment that works for your child. For the students who need the sound component when they work, there is one important thing to remember: a background sound that has words forms word pictures in the brain. Your student may try to assure you that having television or loud rock music playing is not a problem. Well, it is.

Success in Chicago!

for NTA Prosper at Nationals -by Teresa Stiles

2013 USAT National Taekwondo Championships were held in Chicago this year. It was the largest taekwondo event in the world so far, with more than 4,190 athletes, 830 coaches, 140 referees and 18 rings, all taking place over six days. It was here that NTA Prosper took 5 athletes, and brought home 5 medals. After opening its doors a little more than a year ago, NTA Prosper, owned and operated by Master Michael Grant, introduced Team Olympic Style Taekwondo to a group of his students. With a lot of training, coaching and discipline these athletes began competing at local competitions throughout the year, preparing themselves for the highly recognized Texas State Championships. Results from State proved very successful, qualifying 5 athletes to the highly acclaimed National Taekwondo Championships held in Chicago, IL this year. An amazing feat for such a new school. Master Grant himself is not new to the sport. A 4th degree Master with over 20 years of experience, more than 15 of them coaching,

he displays his love of the sport in each day’s lesson by teaching to the individual. Master Grant has an amazing amount of knowledge and patience, which he shares daily, all while keeping the workouts fun for the students. He also has the uncanny ability to read his students and figure out how they can excel by enhancing their individual strengths, while also working to improve their weaknesses. These students have worked very hard, training six days a week in preparation of meeting other athletes from across the United States. Olympic style taekwondo requires a major commitment which all these students undertook willingly. In addition to learning the disciplines of the sport of taekwondo, the students learn perseverance, self-control, integrity, respect, dedication and patience. Their diligence to this sport, as well as to themselves has obviously paid off, earning them the trip to the Chicago Nationals. Listed below are the athletes and their respective medal earnings.

Pictured from left to right, along with Master Michael Grant (in black). Vincent Stiles (9 yrs old) received double Bronze medals, in both sparring and Forms (poomsae) Alam Alkaz (15 yrs old) received a Gold medal in Sparring. Brody Berry (7yrs old) received a Gold medal in Sparring. Lizzie Shiefelbein (10 yrs old) received a Bronze medal in sparring.

Congratulations NTA Prosper!
