As a child, I always loved the month of April. My mother loved to piddle
in her flower beds and work in the yard, and she instilled in me her passion for gardening and landscaping. I can remember how excited she would get in early Spring when everything started to green up and start blooming. And although I knew it would mean hours of work in the hot sun, I remember catching just a little bit of her excitement. Now, with my own home and flower beds, I can fully understand her excitement – much to my husband’s dismay! In fact, even as I write this, I am looking out the window into our yard – and thinking about all of the landscape projects I want for us to accomplish this season. I can’t help but wonder if this will be the year that our children catch just a little bit of the excitement…… With the warmer weather upon us, we are excited to announce a Summer Movie Series Event called Friday at the Park. Beginning in May, we will be hosting an outdoor movie event at Frontier Park. This is a free event for the community, and a great opportunity to gather together as a town. We will have music and a snack bar before and during the movie, and all of the proceeds will go to benefit four of our local nonprofits and organizations! The recipients include the Prosper Open Foundation, Cornerstone NCT, Project Graduation and Bethlehem Place. We hope that you will come out and support these amazing organizations, and enjoy great movies, music, refreshments and camaraderie with our neighbors! Please visit www.fridayatthepark.com for more details! We would like to remind you to visit www.live-prosper.com as often as possible, as we update our “Prosper Today – News & Events” section regularly. Please feel free to send us anything that you would like to include on the website, as this is a great outlet to promote relevant local events. You can also get updates about events and Prosper businesses through our Facebook page…if you haven’t already, go give us a like! As always, we are honored and humbled by the incredible feedback we’ve received from you, our readers – and we are PROSPER PROUD to be your hometown magazine!

Healthy S olutions by Dr. Jon Thomas
- Alcohol Awareness -
April 2013 will be the 27th anniversary of Alcohol Awareness Month, sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence. Two-thirds of American adults consume alcohol, mainly in social situations with friends or family members. For most of them, drinking alcohol is controlled and safe. However, for the 18 million Americans with alcoholism, drinking is highly dangerous. Alcohol abuse is a highly prevalent condition, with a lifetime prevalence as high as 17% of the population. In a recent survey, 51% of Americans reported being current drinkers of alcohol. More than 23% participated in binge drinking in the last month, and 6% reported heavy drinking. Excessive alcohol consumption is the third leading preventable cause of death in t h e U.S.
Alcohol use is associated with 40% of all traffic fatalities, 70% of attempted suicides by college students, and is a leading cause of injuries treated in emergency departments.
Alcohol intoxication occurs when drinking excess alcohol leads to inappropriate behavior and impaired judgment. Being intoxicated can cause slurred speech, impaired balance, unsteady walking or running, difficulty paying attention or remembering, confusion, and even coma. People who drink alcohol for long periods of time will develop alcohol addiction. This addiction causes people to lose control. They become preoccupied with alcohol, and are often in denial about their problem. They develop tolerance, meaning that larger and larger quantities of alcohol are needed to achieve the same effects that were once possible with smaller amounts. They may also experience withdrawal, or physical symptoms when cutting back or stopping drinking, Other signs of addiction are seen if there is an ongoing desire to cut down or reduce alcohol use, spending an increasing amount of time thinking about, getting, using, or recovering from alcohol, and continuing to drink despite physical symptoms, or relationship, school, work, and legal problems. After long term use, some of the physical symptoms of alcohol addiction are sleep
disturbances, trembling, and blackouts or memory loss following drinking episodes. Long term alcohol use causes disease of the liver, pancreas, heart, nervous system (dementia and stroke), and may cause cancers of the mouth, esophagus, pharynx, larynx, and breast. Mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, and eating disorders may also be seen with alcohol use. If you or someone you know has a drinking problem, you are not alone, and help is immediately available. Talk to your family physician about it. There are many treatments available, including medicines, support groups, and counseling resources. As with most behavioral problems, a combination of all types of available treatments usually proves most successful in quitting drinking. Call 972-347-5778 or visit our website at www.ProsperFamilyDoctor.com to schedule a same day appointment with Dr. Thomas to discuss any general medical issue. One
of the latest trends in the housing industry is now coming to Lennar in DFW– the return of multi-generational living. Extended families living together has made a major resurgence to American living and Lennar is proud to unveil their all-new NEXT GEN - The Home within a Home. “This is very exciting for our company and to our customers and we are thrilled to be able to bring this option to Dallas/Ft. Worth,” said Stewart Parker, Division President. “We are constantly keeping our finger on the pulse of new trends in homebuilding – and this NEXT GEN home is taking the company to the next level of innovation in homebuilding while providing homebuyers with even more choices and options than ever before.” Having more generations living together can be beneficial for everyone involved. Studies show that one out of six people already live in a multi-generational household and that by 2020 there will be an overwhelming trend for this type of living space. After much research and seeing a rising need for this type of living situation, Lennar decided to design a floorplan that can accommodate different living arrangements while still providing great use of space, square footage and privacy. “We have created our Home within a Home to allow for dual living situations without sacrificing comfort,” stated Parker.

Prospective homebuyers have been raving about Lennar’s newly opened models at Lake Valley in Rowlett. After the successful Grand Opening event, the community is quickly gaining reputation as the most exciting neighborhood in the area. Much of the excitement surrounding the opening was due to Lennar’s NEXT GEN – the Home within a Home multi-generational floorplan. Now Lennar is excited to introduce this same concept and floor plans to the Prosper, McKinney and Frisco areas.
“The public response was great and people have already shown great interest in our new floor plan,” said Parker. “We are thrilled at this overwhelming response among savvy homebuyers! The opportunity for families to share a mortgage makes a lot of economic sense for many families,” declared Parker. “Lennar’s NEXT GEN - The Home within a Home, is es-
sentially two homes with one payment, making living together affordable, comfortable and flexible to your needs.” Lennar has already seen tremendous interest from the public since they introduced this concept in other areas of the country and is beyond excited to be the first homebuilder to bring this “never before seen” floorplan to Texas. In Crown Ridge, the main living area of the home is a two-story with 4 bedrooms, 3.5 baths and a two-bay garage plus an optional theater off the upstairs game room. This new floorplan encompasses 3,861 square feet and is priced from the mid $300,000’s. The NEXT GEN suite includes a separate entrance with a private living room, kitchenette, laundry, bedroom, bathroom and covered patio. Lennar designed this unique option to be incorporated into the main home floorplan in a way that allows it to be a separate space but also offers direct access from the main house, depending upon the family’s needs. “Imagine having your parents nearby to help care for your children, or saving money on adult care for them because they live with you,” said Parker. “Or being able to provide enough space for your child who needs to move in after college – now you can have all that and still have the size home you need for your family – it’s a home within a home.”

Spring is a great time to get Organized!
Real Estate Consulting and Services
ACREAGE | LOTS | HOMES | DEVELOPMENT
The change of seasons, the warmer air and the lighter and brighter days inspire many to sort, purge and find permanent homes for everything we own. Whether you are eager to organize your papers, clothes, toys, craft supplies - even finances – the spring season is a great time to roll up your sleeves, let the sunlight in and get to work. Look at the space that is in need of a new system and decide what the purpose of that area should be. Then, take a picture! It is so gratifying to take Before Photos so you can really take pride in your organizing effort when you are finished! Give yourself a couple of hours to wade through your stuff. Schedule it on your calendar so you will not procrastinate. Then, sort everything, one item at a time, deciding as you hold it if it should stay and serve the purpose you are seeking or if it should leave the area. You can have bins spread out and labeled so you have a place to put each item as you touch it. “Stay”, “Elsewhere”, “Trash”, “Recycle”, “Donate” & “Sell” are good general labels to work with. Once the area has been sorted, you can see instant results by taking all of the bins, except for the one(s) labeled “Stay”, to their respective locations. Now you are ready for the fun part: designing new systems and habits to make it easier to maintain your renewed space! Plan zones or specific areas for certain tasks. Group tools and supplies for each task together. Easy access is important so try not to stack anything more than two or three items deep. Label what you need to. Remember to incorporate your personal style and colors into your new system to personalize it and make it your own. Schedule time to maintain your new space, either every day or a few times a week, so that every item always lives in its new home. Your stuff does not get to go on Spring Break and hang out somewhere it does not permanently live in! Finally, take the After Photos and post them where you can see them to remind you of what you have accomplished and what you do not want to return to. Be proud! You have worked hard. Enjoy the rest of your spring season! Jennifer Sanchez is a professional organizer and owns Organize & Prosper, LLC. For more information, go to www. OrganizeAndProsper.com or call 972.467.5107.

One of the most frequently asked questions of dermatologists
is “What is the best skin care for me?” This question has as many potential answers as there are people, but here a few suggestions. First, and foremost, avoid ultraviolet radiation, from any source. This means the sun and tanning beds. Ultraviolet radiation is your skins worst enemy. Everything you don’t want to happen to your skin, such as skin cancer and the resultant scars from treatment, wrinkles, age spots, sagging or poor texture can be caused and often made worse by ultraviolet radiation (UVR). As part of a daily skin care routine, I strongly recommend a daily application of sunscreen, and reapplication every 2-3 hours if UVR will be encountered during the day. SPF should be at least 30, although higher is even better. It should block the main types of UVR from the sun, namely UVA and UVB. Many people favor or prefer sunscreens that use fewer chemicals, and thus a sunscreen based on zinc oxide or titanium dioxide may be the best choice. There are definitely some very nice, non-greasy sunscreens that have little odor, as well. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with spray sunscreens, but they are frequently used incorrectly, leading to sunburn in many cases.
There is so much more that could be said in the skin care realm. We invite you to visit one of our offices and discuss your skin situation with one of our expert estheticians.
PROSPER DERMATOLOGY ASSOCIATES Coit
Second, using an antioxidant, vitamin C based, topical serum, is recommended. These products seek and destroy oxidating/ harmful compounds on the skin and promote new collagen formation, among other things. Left unchecked, these oxidating compounds lead to premature aging, wrinkles, and poor texture. Over time (several months) these serums can begin to reverse some of these findings. Forming new, fresh collagen is the basis for many expensive cosmetic laser procedures, as well. New collagen can lead to a more youthful appearance, in many ways. These serums are easy to use, take but a minute to apply, and are cosmetically elegant.
Third, use a topical retinoid cream or gel every day. Some brand names for these products include Retin-A, Differin, and Tazorac. Used regularly, these products can also help promote new collagen formation, and decrease fine wrinkles. They also exfoliate the dead layers of the skin surface, leading to a brighter skin appearance many times. Further, topical retinoids help the skin reproduce itself in a more orderly fashion, leading to less clogging, less acne, and reversal of some sun damage effects.

Nicole Linden, sole owner, grew up in the Dallas, Texas area. She has been drawn to animals since she was a child. After obtaining a business degree from SMU, Nicole worked in Corporate America for a short time, then tried teaching. Eventually she realized her calling was to open a pet sitting business and do what she loves most, caring and loving on animals. In 2009, Personable Pet Care was born; a pet sitting, dog walking, & waste scooping company serving Frisco and surrounding areas. Her success happened quickly and Personable Pet Care grew to a team servicing a 30 mile radius. With the success and passion stemming from her pet sitting business, she also launched into opening Bliss Pet Resort & Spa. Both companies are owned and operated by Nicole today.

All boarding and dog daycare parents must complete an application prior to service. The guest application can be found on the website under “Boarding” or “Daycare.” After calling ahead to schedule your services, print, complete, and bring in the application with a copy of your pets vaccination records prior to boarding. All doggie daycare candidates must schedule a trial day of daycare. On your pets trial day, Bliss will evaluate your dogs temperament, play style, and social skills. We look for signs that indicate your dogs will enjoy the daycare environment with minimal stress. We will provide you the results upon pick-up. To schedule grooming, call ahead for availability and bring in or fax your pets vaccination records.

We have 4 potty yards, 3 separate outdoor play yards and 2 indoor play yards for big dogs and little dogs to run, jump, and be blissful. Our dog daycare guests enjoy indoor and outdoor time with dogs of similar size and play style as well as a mid-day nap to April | 2013

Did You Know
The first settlers arrived in this area in 1846 for the black fertile prairie soil of North Texas where cotton was "King". Between 1850 and 1902, two settlements existed. One community, two miles south of the present town, was called Rock Hill. The second community, one mile north, was called Richland. The development of these small communities was expedited in 1876 when County Courts ordered small tracks of land to be established for quick sale. These tracts, each approximately 160 acres in size, were sold for $3.50 per acre. Dr. A. T. Bryant of McKinney purchased one of the tracts, which later became the geographic nucleus for the Town of Prosper.

The Selling Season By Tiffany Smith
Spring selling season has sprung and if you are thinking of selling your home, there’s no time like the present! With a shortage of home inventory and the unbelievably low interest rates, we are most definitely in a seller’s market. In order to ensure a fast sell for the best possible price, we want to present your home in a way that appeals to the largest audience. Staging can make all the difference! Here are some tips for getting your home “show ready”!
18 | Live & Prosper Magazine
April | 2013
Add Curb Appeal
You only get one chance to make a first impression, so make it good! Clear branches, rake leaves, trim bushes, pile on a fresh layer of mulch to those flower beds, and plant some seasonal color. Especially in the spring, that pop of color adds a hint of cheer!
Define The Space
You want to define your home’s space in such a way that you are showcasing the size of the room while also highlighting its purpose. In order to do this, you may need to add or remove some furniture. You want the space to feel open, inviting and functional.
Lighten It Up
Open the drapes and pull up the shades because light makes a difference! You will actually want to take advantage of multiple light sources so turn on any overhead lights as well as any indirect lighting such as lamps or under counter lighting. Unexpected lighting can add warmth to any space.
Clear The Closet Clutter
Closets should be free of clutter or distractions. They should be painted a neutral color and be sure to take everything off the floor; this gives a feeling of more space. Go ahead and pack away anything that you don’t need because closets show best when they are only 1/3 full. These rules will also apply to your cabinets, cupboards, and drawers.
Create Scent Appeal
Smells matter! Buyers really do care about smells, so be sure to take out the trash, run the sink disposal, and employ some room spray or a nice candle. If you have pets, you should be sure to keep them regularly bathed and either clean or remove litter boxes when showing. Baking cookies before a showing never hurts either! If you are thinking of selling, call me today to schedule a free, no obligation appointment so that I can take a fresh look at your home and suggest ways to stage it and make it more appealing to buyers. I will also provide you with a complimentary comparative market analysis so that you will know exactly what your home is worth. When you are dead… [Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James] found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus… two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!”
The truth is we don’t really believe in resurrection of any kind. When someone hits a dead end in their life, we don’t expect them to come back. A destructive habit, a shattered career, a broken family, a tragedy. Through chance or bad decisions, people hit a dead end and we just can’t believe there is a way back. The Christian faith is built upon the everyday reality of resur-

How is it that a man could be tortured, killed and buried and then after several days come back heart beating, body restored and alive again? We are not so different from the Eleven. Right plant, Right place
If you ask a child to draw a picture of a garden, and he’ll likely
draw some flowers. Give a gardener no more space than a front porch, and what will probably appear is a flowing flowerpot. For most, flowers are the definition of a garden. And no matter what shade of green your proverbial thumb is, you can have bountiful blooms in your life. However, for your flowers do their best, it helps to understand the basics about how flowers grow and what their essential needs are. Sun is essential. Building a flower takes a lot of energy, and all of a plant’s energy comes from the sun. So most flowering plants need a full-sun site -- where sunlight falls 6 to 8 hours a day all through the growing season.
Success is in the soil. Good soil -- not too sandy, not too sticky, with enough organic matter to make it drain well and be inviting to plant roots -- is essential for successful flower gardening, just as it is for vegetables. After all, vegetables such as squash and tomatoes are formed from flowers. Annuals and Perennials. As far as gardens are concerned, these are the two basic kinds of flowering plants. Annuals go through their whole life cycle in one growing season: sprouting from a seed, growing leaves and roots, producing flowers, creating seeds and then dying. They are popular with gardeners because, with reasonable care, they bloom their heads off all season. Perennials are plants whose root systems stay alive underground for several years or even decades. The part above the soil may go dormant and die back in winter, but the plant is still alive and will sprout again in Spring. The tradeoff for perennials’ long life is that they bloom for only a few weeks or months each year. Exactly when and how long varies between species. Which is better? Both have their uses in the garden. Annuals are great for places where you want a lot of flowers, but they generally need more watering, fertilizing and other care than perennials, and planting them every year can be a chore. Perennials provide steady structure and form to a garden, and many gardeners delight in the anticipation of waiting for their favorites’ bloom time. Few are truly plant-itand-forget-it, but they do tend to need less care than annuals. Long-term vs. Short-term. Perennials, whether you buy them as seeds or plants, may take a year or more to get established Home and Garden
and bloom in the garden, but the effort will pay off for years. If you want flowers now, annuals are the solution. But it’s not an either-or thing; many gardeners combine annuals and perennials. Labor cost: The price of annuals’ all-season bloom is that they need regular watering and fertilizing. That’s because producing all those flowers all season takes a lot of water and nutrients, as well as sunlight. You may also need to pinch off dried-up blooms to encourage the plant to flower more. Perennials aren’t totally carefree -- depending on the species and your soil, they also need some watering and fertilizer, but not as much attention as annuals. The perennials that tend to need the least maintenance are native plants -- those that evolved in our area and thrived. In the shade: In general, the less sunlight you have, the fewer blooms you will get; in too much shade, flowering plants may produce leaves but no blooms. Some species of annuals and perennials can bloom in less than eight hours a day of sunlight, but you’ll have to seek them out. As always when buying plants, read labels, seed packets or catalog descriptions carefully. Right plant, Right place. Often we fall for a flower on looks alone, regardless of whether we can give it what it needs. But you will have most success with both annuals and perennials if you first figure out what kind of site
you have -- how much sun, what kind of soil, how close to the hose, how much work you are willing to put in -- and then look for a plant that fits. live-prosper.com |
