he fall is always a great time of year…cooler temps, football, sweatshirts, boots, candles and the gorgeous autumn colors. In addition to the beautiful season and weather, October holds many fun events in Prosper! It’s an exciting time to be in our little town. We are growing at a rapid pace, which means more students, friends and neighbors, as well as more dining & shopping coming soon! It won’t be long until we’ll have everything we need right here in our little piece of the world!

One of the most exciting events all year is approaching quickly…PROSPER HOMECOMING!! We begin the festivities with Spirit Week at the schools on Tuesday, October 11th, followed by the ENORMUS parade through town on Wednesday, October 12th. The parade route begins at Reynolds Middle School, marching down Church Street to Broadway, then over to Coleman and finally up to Prosper High School. The festivities begin at 5:30pm, followed by a BBQ and pep rally at PHS right after! Later in the week, our football team takes on McKinney North under the Friday Night Lights. It should be a great game, beginning with the introduction of the Homecoming Court and crowning of this year’s King & Queen. If this is your first Homecoming in Prosper, get ready – you’ve never seen anything like it!!

The following weekend, on October 22nd, another huge event is scheduled… Prosper Magazine presents the Prosper Pumpkinfest! A fall festival with old fashioned Hay Rides, a pumpkin patch, chili contest, food and live music is planned at Frontier Park. Bring the entire family, as there will be something for everyone! Pick your pumpkin from the patch and we’ll provide a decorating station for the kids. We’ll also have a chili contest, and if it’s anything like last year, you will want to come hungry – the entries were AMAZING! There will also be several other food trucks available. An added treat this year will be a live performance from musician Jon Christopher Davis. He’s an amazing performer and we are thrilled at the generosity of our Entertainment Sponsor – Suddenlink! Come out to Frontier Park on Saturday, October 22nd to enjoy an old-fashioned fall festival. It begins at 3:00pm…bring your blankets or lawn chairs to enjoy the music!

It’s THAT Time of the Year Again!! You guessed it… with October hopefully comes cooler temperatures, but it certainly means it is time for Prosper Homecoming! This is a tremendous community event that we look forward to each year. An ongoing goal of Prosper ISD is to NOT allow our growth to compromise our commitment to community – our sense of connection. Just like we are toppling 10,000 students this year, we are expecting 10,000+ to attend this year’s homecoming parade. As exciting as that is, I am urging all of our parents to exercise the highest degree of safety during the parade so that we might be able to continue this great tradition. As in previous years, there will be candy, but this can only continue if everyone does their part. To best ensure safety, the corners of Church Street and Broadway along with Broadway and Coleman will be designated as “NO CANDY ZONES”. This is a fun event for all and will continue to be as long as we keep all those involved safe. On the afternoon of October 12th, he parade will start promptly at 5:30 beginning behind Reynolds MS traveling south on Church Street to Broadway. From Broadway, the parade will head down to Coleman and turn back north all the way to PHS. Outside the arena will be free barbeque for ALL to enjoy as the parade ends and moves into the PHS Arena for the community pep rally. This is everyone’s chance to see what WE ARE PROSPER is all about – Go Eagles!

4,976 cancer patients found hope here. When almost five thousand people with cancer choose one place, there must be a good reason. At Baylor Scott & White Medical Center–McKinney, we’ve treated patients with numerous forms of cancer. Our oncology unit nurses are specially trained in caring for patients with cancer. Our patient navigation services and support groups are available to help patients throughout the treatment process. And our staff is attuned to the emotional and spiritual well-being of our patients and their families. So if you or someone you know needs cancer care, trust the people who are experienced at treating thousands of people and are dedicated to making every person count.

e’ve come a long way from the days when Prosper residents counted on each other to fight fires in Town. Like all small communities that sprang up in rural areas, fighting fires was a communal effort. Volunteers would leave their own homes, gather at the volunteer station, pick up whatever meager equipment was available, and rush to the scene. Firefighting was very much a learn-as-you-go proposition. Maybe the volunteer fire chief was a little more experienced than the other townspeople who fought fires, but it’s much more likely that everyone on the crew had far more community spirit than firefighting knowledge. In fact, I was a volunteer firefighter in Frisco in the early-1980s, and our volunteer fire chief was also the Town Administrator. In contrast with those not-so-long-ago days, today’s firefighting resources in Prosper are light years ahead. To begin with, our Fire Chief, Ronnie Tucker, is recognized far and wide as a consummate professional. His long experience and deep knowledge in fire science is matched only by his managerial expertise, even temperament and dedication to the profession. Chief Tucker has served as a steady and generous mentor for many of

our firefighters here in Prosper and throughout the North Texas area. Fire departments near and far regularly seek out his advice and counsel on matters related to the latest in firefighting tactics, techniques and equipment. We’re extremely fortunate to have him leading our firefighting team. And, as we see the kind of tremendous growth that’s in store for Prosper, his leadership will be even more important as the Fire Department grows and matures. Prosper will continue to add to its firefighting corps in both personnel and equipment, and we will count very heavily on Chief Tucker and his command team to lead us in the right direction. In fact, the new fire station on the west side of Town will reflect Chief Tucker’s long-term vision and characteristic pragmatism. For example, rather than overextend our resources by staffing the new station with a full complement, he has brokered a partnership with the Town of Little Elm to share the new station for two years. That will allow Prosper to staff the firefighting side, and play host to a Little Elm ambulance crew at the new station. Both squads will cover west Prosper and northeast Little Elm for the duration of the agreement. At the end of two years, the population

density in these sectors of both Towns is expected to reach a point that can support separate stations. This is the kind of forward thinking that Chief Tucker brings to the position. When it opens later this year, the new station will accommodate three shifts of four Prosper firefighters and two Little Elm medics. It will house a fire engine, a brush truck, an EMS unit, and a reserve fire engine within its three bays. This new station and additional personnel will also make a difference in our ISO Class rating. We’ll know when the ISO review is complete, but we’re shooting for at least a Class 3 designation from our current Class 5. That will mean safer structures and a potential lowering of homeowner’s insurance rates for residents. We will always have an affinity for the Central Fire Station, known as the Dawg House, but the new station, called The Coop because of the famed Mahard chicken farm that was formerly near it, will undoubtedly grow on us.

HOW A LOCAL PHYSICIAN IS PUTTING DOWN ROOTS AND FLOURISHING WITHIN THE COMMUNITY Recently, we introduced you to Manju Pandey, M.D., a family practitioner, whose aspirations of providing the most comprehensive and personalized healthcare led her from Nepal to Prosper Family Medicine. In only a few short months, Dr. Pandey has not only grown to love the city of Prosper, she’s begun developing deep and lasting relationships with its people as well. “I feel I’ve developed a wonderful rapport with my patients and am eager to continue helping those within this community,” said Pandey. “I have received amazing feedback from my patients and their families and enjoy taking the time to get to know each and every one of them. They seem confident and comfortable when they see me and that is what I consider most important about the work I do.” Seeing and treating new patients since June, Pandey has ventured out and represented Prosper Family Medicine. Since she and her
14
WeAreProsper.com | October 2016
family have started calling the Prosper area home, Pandey has been drawn to the town’s people and their sense of community and acceptance of others. By attending recent local events like Pride in the Sky, she’s been able to connect with the residents of Prosper and make indelible impressions outside of the exam room. “Being personable is the one of the most important aspects of the care I provide, no matter who the person is,” Pandey continued. “I get to know and spend as much time with my patients as necessary. This not only helps me diagnose
any health issues they may be experiencing but it also allows me to get to know the people who are putting their faith into my medical expertise. I make every effort to help them understand that they’re more than ‘just another patient’ to me.” What’s more, Pandey has noticed that being Nepalese has brought more patient diversity in to Prosper Family Medicine, relating to both age and background. As one of the primary reasons she originally became a physician was to provide reliable care to anyone who needed it, regardless of race, religion, income or sex, she enjoys the fact that patients who may not have originally sought out healthcare can feel comfortable with her.
“
Growing up and witnessing adverse living conditions is what made me get in to this line of work,” Pandey said. “Now, when I have new patients who have felt intimidated by the healthcare system put their health in my hands, it reaffirms the reason why I wanted to get in to medicine. It’s all about the connection and trust you have.
”
She, herself, has also felt that same, meaningful connection with Methodist McKinney Hospital. According to Pandey, those who work for the hospital genuinely care about the patients they see and the work they do, making it much easier to focus on patient needs. That mentality motivates her on a daily basis to do even better work and strive for a much more elevated level of care for the community and its people.
Along with the other physicians and staff at Prosper Family Medicine, Pandey believes quality healthcare begins and ends with these strong patient relationships.
Providing a nurturing environment, advanced medical equipment and a commitment to improving the health of their community is what sets Dr. Pandey and Prosper Family Medicine apart from the rest. With experience in both simple and complex disease management and treatment, Prosper Family Medicine places an emphasis on prevention and education empowers their patients to live a healthier lifestyle. At Prosper Family Medicine, the physicians treat patients like family. Each person is shown kindness and respect while receiving the efficient and advanced healthcare services they deserve, including health maintenance exams, preventative health screenings, women’s health, minor procedures, immunizations, check-ups and sport physicals. If you’d like to learn more about Dr. Pandey or schedule an appoint with her or any of Prosper Family Medicine’s physicians, visit ProsperFamilyMedicine.com or call 972-346-2279. Community Cory Ausenbaugh Memorial Scholarship Run Set for October 8th at Windsong Ranch Seven years ago the Cory Ausenbaugh Memorial Scholarship Run was established to memorialize Cory Ausenbaugh’s commitment to education. Cory Ausenbaugh, was a beloved, mother, wife, educator, and friend who passed away unexpectedly in 2009. Each year since her passing the Cory Ausenbaugh Memorial Scholarship Board has been able to honor Cory’s life by awarding a scholarship to a Prosper High School graduating senior who has chosen to pursue a degree in education. With the support and financial backing from generous donors like Dave R. Williams and Dr. Jill Sentlingar the scholarship has been able to be sustained for seven years and has now expanded to an additional scholarship being awarded to a student pursuing course work through a technical school after graduation. Ever since Cory’s passing the Cory Ausenbaugh Memorial Scholarship Foundation has been able to raise funds through donations, auctions and the popular Cory Ausenbaugh Memorial Scholarship (CAMS) 5K and Fun Run. This year the race is set for Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Windsong Ranch. The one-mile fun run starts at 9 a.m. and the 5K begins at 9:30 a.m. Windsong Ranch is located at 1001 Windsong Parkway, north of US 380, just east of FM 423. In addition to the annual scholarships for graduating seniors, the foundation is also designed to offer scholarships to the children of Prosper firefighters, police officers and educators who pass away prematurely. Online registration is open through Wednesday, October 5th for $20 at www.getmeregistered.com and entering “Prosper” in the search field. Race day registration begins at 8 a.m. The entry fee on the day of the race will increase to $30 for onsite registration. A commemorative T-shirt is included in the race packet, while they last. Remaining shirts will be available for purchase after the race for $5. Cory was known for loving to wear boots. A tradition that has always been a part of the race will be a prize for the best boots. Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place runners in both races, and first boy and girl under nine years old in the one mile race, as well as first male and female over 60 in the 5K. Moreover, the Prosper ISD School with the most registered runners will gain possession of the traveling trophy, awarded each year to the winning school with their school name engraved on the base. Rucker Elementary is the winning school from the race in 2015. The Cory Ausenbaugh Memorial Scholarship Foundation is a public charity under section 501(c) (3), and thus contributions are deductible under section 170 of the Code. More information on the Foundation, including how to donate, can be obtained by contacting Stuart Blasingame, stuartblasingame@yahoo.com or 469-667-1702.

Each year the Prosper Independent School District prepares a luncheon for all veterans who served in the Armed Services. The Prosper Historical Society also has its annual Veterans Day Program and we invite all veterans who live in Prosper or have been associated with Prosper over the years to these functions. The only way we can keep up with the veterans is by word of mouth, magazine articles or by newspaper clippings. The school district has a list of veterans and the Prosper Historical Society has a list of veterans so we have combined our lists to make sure we cover as many veterans as possible. Currently we have a list of 403 individuals who have served in the military. Some of these go back to the Civil War. The Prosper Historical Society has a Veterans Section in our museum located in the Prosper Independent School Administration Building (Board Room) at 605 East Seventh Street in Prosper. The Prosper Historical Society also keeps records of each individual along with a picture of the veteran in uniform. The only way we can keep this current is with your help. If you are a veteran, please complete the following information fully and send to Bill Hays, President of the Prosper Historical Society. Also, if you know of another veteran please contact him/ her and have them complete the information as well. We would like to get as many of our records updated before November as possible in order to inform and invite our servicemen to our upcoming events. We are in the process of signing an agreement with the Town of Prosper for the Veterans Memorial to be built at Frontier Park. You will hear more about this later when the agreement is signed. In the meantime, let’s get all our veterans in Prosper in our system. The Prosper Historical Society is a non-profit organization that is manned by volunteers that are looking to preserve the history of Prosper. The Veterans Program is just one of our projects. We also have fundraisers and sell quilts, aprons, note cards, etc. We meet at 1:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month at the museum. Please contact Bill Hays to be included in our veterans listing. We appreciate your service to this great country. Bill Hays President, Prosper Historical Society E-mail:

Prosper Family Dentistry Jill Sentlinger, DDS Laura Coseo, DDS, FAGD Cara Kessler, DDS
In August of 2004, when Prosper was a one-stoplight town and Preston was a two lane Texas highway, Dr. Jill Sentlingar opened Prosper’s first dental practice, Prosper Family Dentistry. She opened Prosper Family Dentistry with a desire to develop a family dental practice focused on comprehensive oral health care founded on building relationships in the dental chair and in the community. In 2006, Dr. Lara Coseo joined the practice to serve the needs of the growing community. “To love what you do and feel like it matters, how could anything be more fun?” Katherine Graham, first American female Fortune 500 CEO When asked to write an article about women in business, particularly the business of healthcare and medicine, this quote immediately came to mind. The pages of business magazines are filled with articles on women, heralding what women do differently and how we not only thrive in but have improved the world of business. We are builders of networks, advocates for those who are outsiders and we help nurture and grow staff and coworkers. Women understand being a leader means serving and requires sacrifice. This is especially true in healthcare. We love and serve our patients loyally and our greatest joys come from improving their health and happiness. As a successful woman owned business, Family Focused Care grows daily, mainly by referrals from our existing patients. We don’t think this is an accident as we are committed to doing things differently. We listen to our patients, often giving them time and attention they haven’t received in the past. We are fortunate to have a staff of intelligent, strong and successful women who work tirelessly to create an outstanding patient experience every day. Working with dynamic women is empowering and humbling. Laughter echoes throughout our office on a daily basis. We love what we do and what we do matters, what could be more fun?

I am a native Texan and am currently going to the University of Texas at Dallas in order to obtain a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Geospatial Information Sciences. I started my photography business due to being a full-time student and single mom of one, and quickly found that I am enthralled by the creative aspect of photography. Since I began school, I struggled with part-time jobs that did not pay well and consisted of too many hours, resulting in not being able to spend quality time with my daughter. GreenJeanes Photography is an amazing passion in my life and I am so grateful to be able to work independently! I love meeting new people and getting to know them, as well as going to explore new places and scenery. I have recently added a new collection to my portfolio for those that want a more artistic flare to hang in their homes or businesses, which is my custom creative design. My favorite photography sessions are children (I just love their beautiful little faces!) and family, but I also am so happy to offer newborn, maternity, parties, and much more! All sessions are done with natural lighting to bring out a beautiful and more natural tone in your photos.

We implement the technology available today to collaborate through an on-line or hosted bookkeeping solution. Additionally, we offer complete payroll processing, sales tax filing and, of course, income tax preparation. For individuals, we are ready to assist with income tax preparation, calculation of tax estimates and a myriad of “what-if ” tax questions. We are diligent about remaining up-to-date on the changing tax laws and we examine all the tax-saving opportunities available to you. We are committed to minimizing your tax liabilities and maximizing your future opportunities while remaining in full compliance with IRS statutes. Stacey Black Rhea Lana’s of Frisco-McKinney Clothing and connecting families; that’s what Rhea Lana’s is all about. Let’s face it – kids grow fast and they need a LOT of stuff! At Rhea Lana’s, families can turn their clutter into cash by consigning their kids’ outgrown clothes, toys, baby equipment and more, and then shop for everything their kiddos need for the upcoming season. It’s a win-win! BUT it’s so much more than a consignment sale twice a year. To me, it’s about connecting with the people: the moms working hard to clothe their children on a tight budget, the families consigning so they can raise money for back-to-school expenses, a family vacation or even an upcoming adoption, the grandmother volunteering her time so her daughter can shop early to find the best bargains. There are truly so many stories and blessings to share from the people I meet at our two Rhea Lana’s events each year. Not only is it a blessing to reflect on others’ stories, but sometimes I have to pinch myself when I reflect on my own story and how God has guided us through every step of the way. In 2009 my husband, Brad, our two children and I moved to Prosper. We’re native Texans but prior to our move to Prosper, we lived in Arkansas just long enough to learn about Rhea Lana’s, fall in love with the business and realize that I wanted to bring the first franchise to Texas. So in August 2009 we held our first Rhea Lana’s of Frisco/McKinney event with 60 consignors (probably more than half of them were my new Prosper friends!) and 5,800 items. Last month we held our 15th event in this area with more than 550 consignors and 65,000 items. It’s taken a lot of hard work and prayer, and it’s been such a blessing to watch Rhea Lana’s grow over the years. Thank you Prosper for your involvement, support and excitement toward Rhea Lana’s! Rhea Lana’s of Frisco/McKinney holds two children’s consignment events each year; we’d love for you to join us at our next event in late winter/ early spring 2017 as a volunteer, consignor, shopper or all three! You can find out more info on frisco.rhealana.com or like us on Facebook at Rhea Lana’s of Frisco.

Remember When
Why Texas? H
ave you every stopped to think why our fathers and forefathers chose to leave their homes in the eastern part of America and head west to Collin County and the Prosper area? This would have taken a great deal of thought because there were many pros and cons regarding the decision to pick up your family and leave the place you called home. Remember we are talking about the mid-1800’s in most cases, which made the move even more difficult, as travel then was very different than what we enjoy today. First, let’s review why a family or an individual would even consider leaving their home. 1. Texas was offering incentives to settlers who would move here. Land was cheap, and in some cases they would build a home and supply you with a gun. 2. There was plenty of water and timber to build your house and fuel for heating your house and cooking. 3. Many had a desire to move because they were not satisfied with their current status. They had no job and were looking for a place to start again. 4. Indians were not as hostile in Texas as other parts of the west. 5. They could get in on the ground floor and help build new communities, churches, schools, etc. 6. Many had families that were also moving to Texas or had already moved and they wanted to join them. Second, let us consider why they would not want to move to Texas. What were some of the reason or obstacles they faced with the move? 1. It was a long way to Texas, especially when travelling by wagon and horses. 2. You might never see your family or friends again. 3. Many did not know the exact route and did not know how long it would take to arrive. 4. Settlers had to provide for themselves along the

way. Many did this by killing wild game and fishing to provide food for the family. 5. There was no medical help or doctor, unless there happened to be one in the group that was travelling together. Because of that, there was fear that many would not make it because of the various types of sickness that you could contact during the travel.

6. There was a possibility of hostile Indians or outlaws along the route. 7. Travel was hard. The roads were rough and would tear up the wagons and there were many rivers and creeks to cross. 8. Weather was a factor including heat, flooding, tornadoes, hail storms, wind storms, rain, etc. 9. Settlers had to bring supplies and kits to repair the wagon, wheels, harness, along with feed for the horses and cattle. Those that decided to come to Texas were hard working, hardy and courageous people. They had a strong desire to move and the pros outweighed the cons so they packed up and headed to Texas. Most of them just brought the essentials…all the food they could carry, cooking pots and pans, spices, dinnerware, eating utensils and clothes. They knew that these things would not be easily obtained in Texas. Household furniture such as beds, tables, chairs and dresser drawers could be built when they arrived in Texas. Some brought a cow or two and some chickens for starters and also for food. The Republic of Texas had hired Peters Colony to advertise and bring the settlers to Texas. Peters Colony signed a contract to bring a stated number of settlers to an area in Texas within a certain time period. Eventually, they ended up signing four contracts with the Republic of Texas because of the number of settlers that were coming. The land area encompassed most of north Texas, including the western parts of Collin County, Dallas County and Grayson County. The remaining area in the agreement included land west and southwest of these three counties, totaling approximately 30 counties in all.

In Good Taste
• Look it over. Look for a round, oval or oblong shaped watermelon that is free from bruises, cuts or dents. • Lift it up. The watermelon should be heavy for its size. On average, a 5-pound watermelon yields 15 cups of edible fruit. • Turn it over. The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun.
Mummy Supplies and Tools:
Oval or round seedless watermelon Cutting board Kitchen knife Small bowl Dry erase marker Paring knife Melon baller, fluted or regular Scoop Assorted peelers Cheesecloth Straight pin Spooky, silly or symbolic, carved pumpkins are an essential ingredient to any Halloween celebration. This year, scare up some special fun for your party with a wicked watermelon carving, instead – but don’t stop there.
Find more recipes, carving patterns and inspiration at watermelon.org.
After crafting your watermelon into an artful mummy, take advantage of the healthy, immune-system supporting qualities of the lycopene leader among fresh produce. At 92 percent water, as well as an excellent source of vitamins A and C, watermelon is a hydrating post-art snack.
• Prior to carving, read through all of the directions.
Carving a creative design into a watermelon is a simple way to kick off the festivities and requires only a handful of common tools. Add a twinkling candle to make a fantastically frightful centerpiece. Or fill it with a fresh fruit salad or salsas for a more functional, practical approach.
• After drawing your design on the rind, insert toothpicks in key places to guide your cuts.
Even if you’re planning on a hollowed-out carving, keep the sweet juicy fruit and make it a healthy addition to your Halloween party menu with a recipe that puts to use all your carving leftovers. To take advantage of all a watermelon has to offer – outside of the fun carving – try Frosted, Frozen Watermelon Balls or Kids Watermelon Pizza Supreme. These fun, simple recipes make it easy to incorporate a healthy snack after all your hard work carving up a Halloween masterpiece.

Carving Tips
• Cuts are easiest when the watermelon is at room temperature. Once your handiwork is complete, chill the carving and contents before serving.
• A sharp knife with a pointed tip makes the easiest, cleanest cuts. • Remove excess flesh in large pieces, when possible, to allow for easier melon ball or cube creation. • Use round toothpicks or skewers to attach pieces to your design as flat toothpicks are not strong enough to bear the weight or stand up to the thickness of the rind.
Choosing a Watermelon With a thick rind covering the fruit inside, you may wonder how to choose the best watermelon at the market. Here are some tips for picking the perfect one:
Battery-operated candle or light Candy eyeballs or blueberries Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry. On cutting board, place watermelon on its side and use kitchen knife to cut off 1/4-inch to 1/2inch from bottom (end opposite stem), being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind. Cut 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch from stem end to create opening large enough to fit small bowl. Using dry erase marker, draw eyes, nose and mouth, along with wavy slits around carving to let more light flow through. Use paring knife to cut out design, being sure to cut through to red fruit. Use fluted or regular melon baller to hollow out inside of watermelon. Use scoop to remove excess watermelon. Peel green rind off outside of watermelon. (Tip: Different peelers work well for different parts of the watermelon, depending on how flat or round the melon is.) Wrap thin strips of cheesecloth around mummy carving and secure with straight pin, if needed. Put battery-operated candle or light into carving. Fit small bowl into top of carving and trim away excess rind to make bowl fit securely. Fill bowl with melon balls and attach candy or blueberries to make eyes.

Deep Family Roots
Prosper Community Library Hosts Free Genealogy Classes
Researching biographies at the Prosper Community Library is not uncommon, as students often dig into the lives of famous, and sometimes infamous, people to get a true sense of that person. “But what if the life and background of the person you’re trying to dig into is your very own?” asks Librarian Leslie Scott. “What if you want to dig into your own family roots? How do you get information on your own background?” The answer may be as easy as devoting four evenings over the next four months to an assisted genealogy search. The Prosper Community Library, 600 N. Coleman, on the campus of Reynolds Middle School, is offering free classes on how to begin a deep dive into family histories. Classes will convene at 6:30 p.m. on the second Thursday evenings from October to January. “These are open format classes, where each individual can proceed at their own pace,” said Scott. “Among the topics covered are defining a family tree, getting started in a search, refining search techniques, and developing a family tree outline.” Computers and the appropriate software are provided, but participants should be able to provide accurate names, some important dates, and any documents that might assist in the search. Classes will meet on Oct. 13, Nov. 10, Dec. 8 and Jan. 12. While the classes are largely self-paced, assistance can be provided by trained researchers following each class. “It’s terribly exciting to start this class,” added Scott. “The process of discovery, especially when it relates to our past, our background, our ancestors and our roots, can be extremely rewarding and often quite startling.” Many amateur and professional novelists, screenwriters, storytellers and public speakers use information gleaned from family histories as starting points for their work. “Who knows? There may be a budding novelist or movie producer in our midst,” said Scott.
