I simply cannot believe it. How on earth is it already time to begin shopping for school supplies and picking up new schedules?? It feels like we just unpacked last year’s backpacks and celebrated the fact that we had a few months off from the rigors of waking up early and our daily battles of whether everyone’s homework had been completed or not. It’s not that we don’t enjoy school in our house…because we do. WE LOVE IT. We are blessed beyond measure that we moved our family to Prosper, Texas. It’s a school system second to none. And our children are better for the experience they are receiving from their education here. Let me see if I can accurately describe the reasons why… LOVE – You will not find another district that loves their students the way that Prosper ISD does. It’s as simple as that. They love our kids. They show up, and I mean for EVERYTHING. Not just the big games and contests – they are there for the everyday events. Because, just like parents, they don’t want to miss a single moment. You can see it all over their faces – our district celebrates WITH our kids. PRIDE – This is huge in Prosper. Ask anyone who has ever attended a Prosper event and they’ll tell you…PROSPER PRIDE. It’s real. It’s our culture. We are all Eagles… from Pre-K to graduation. And the kids embrace it. What other district would hold a HIGH SCHOOL pep rally just for the elementary students? It’s unreal. And if you think that’s cool, wait until you attend one of the BIG pep rallies – it’s an experience that you’ll never forget. I’m telling you, our kids are blessed. EXCELLENCE – This is the expectation in everything we do. We don’t necessarily expect to be first at everything, but I can assure you, we do expect excellence. Excellence in the classroom, excellence in attitudes, excellence in our children as human beings. It’s a simple, but rare concept these days…be your best. Period. LEADERSHIP – This is truly one of my favorite things about PISD – the people. Everyone knows that every great team begins with a great leader. And we have the best. Where else will you find the administration opening car doors in the carpool lanes? And they do it…EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. The lessons that our own kids have learned about lifting others up comes directly from these leaders. Our kids know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that our administrators support them, no matter what. They can count on seeing them in the stands, on campus, at events and around town...always with a big smile and a warm hug. And always pushing them to be their best. Real, true leadership. Whether you are brand new to the district or celebrating your 13 year Senior, Prosper ISD is the real deal. We as parents know it, it’s why we moved here. We have a reputation for excellence in all of the things I described, and probably a hundred more that I didn’t. Thank you to every single teacher, administrator and staff member for your dedication – it does not go unnoticed! And to our kids’ new teachers this year – thank you for opening their minds and opening your hearts to them. Here’s to a great 2016-2017 school year…WE ARE PROSPER!!

olunteerism is defined as the principle of donating time and energy for the benefit of other people in the community as a social responsibility rather than for any financial reward. Our society depends on the generosity of volunteers at many levels. I’m proud to say that Prosper has developed a tremendous sense of volunteerism. For example, the Town counts on volunteers to step up and assist with community betterment projects every year. Serve Prosper is an all-volunteer program that assists residents with getting their homes and property up to our Town’s codes. National Night Out counts on volunteers in neighborhoods and subdivisions to put together street parties to rally their neighbors to unite in sending a clear message to criminals that they are not welcome. Citizens on Patrol and the Community Emergency Response Team simply cannot exist without the commitment of everyday people to come together and offer their services on a volunteer basis. Members of each of our boards and commissions lend their time, talents, and expertise to assist in the development of the policies and procedures that help run our Town. These people attend regular meetings, conduct their own research, meet with staff members and devote hours of careful thought, creativity and ingenuity to their task as board and commission members. The Prosper Lions Club and the Prosper Rotary Club meet

regularly to gauge how they as service organizations can assist in making life better in Proper. These clubs are made up of people who have a larger purpose in mind. They listen to community members, discuss programs that can make a difference, and in many cases, go out and raise funds to complete their projects. The Prosper Historical Society, the 5-0 Club, the Senior Citizen Program all run with volunteer help. The Prosper Chamber of Commerce is also made up of volunteers who either own or run businesses in the area. Their focus is helping each other, and by extension the Town, in bolstering the commercial and job-creating aspects of our Town. Schools are often the first place where volunteers step up and get their feet wet. Many people who have developed a strong sense of volunteerism started as members of the PTA or as room mothers and room dads. In fact, many of those former room mothers are now active in the Prosper Ladies Association, right alongside Lena. I can tell you from personal experience that when these ladies get together, things get done. Churches and houses of worship also count heavily on volunteers to assist with their various ministries. Cornerstone’s Back to School Backpack Drive is only one of many programs devised and run by volunteers. Bethlehem Place Food Pantry, where some of our neighbors depend on vital assistance, is run by volunteers. Many folks who don’t have the time or ability to volunteer, sill assist by keeping the shelves filled. Town events like the Christmas Festival, the Community Picnic, Story Time at the library, Cops with a Claus, and many other similar activities would be impossible to hold without volunteers. Coaches, assistant coaches, team drivers, moms and dads, all volunteer at countless soccer and baseball games. I’m sure I missed many other examples of volunteering in Town. But I know there’s a tremendous spirit of volunteerism in Prosper, and I am very proud of everyone’s efforts.

Prosper ISD Back to School The teachers, administrators and staff of Prosper ISD are looking forward to a great 2016-2017 school year. As we continue to grow in student population we also continue to grow the number of campuses. This year we will be opening two new elementary schools and both of our middle school campuses will house 6th – 8th grade students.
School Start/End Times for 2016-2017 The school start and end times for elementary and middle school campuses have changed slightly for the upcoming school. Elementary 7:45 am - 2:50 pm Middle School 8:10 am - 3:25 pm High School 8:25 am - 3:45 pm
2016 – 2017 School Handbooks Please make sure to visit the PISD Website for up-to-date information on Dress Code, Student Handbooks and Student Code of Conduct.
Stay Connected The best ways for our families and community to stay informed of district events and accomplishments is through the Eagle Express weekly e-mail publication from Dr. Watkins, Superintendent of Schools, the District Facebook and Twitter accounts, and our PISD App found in both the iTunes App Store and Google Play.
Kroger Community Rewards Kroger's generosity helps the money PISD parents are already spending benefit our schools. Shoppers in Texas and Louisiana can designate a PISD PTO on their Kroger Plus Shopper's Card account and a percentage of their purchases will be sent in a quarterly check to their chosen organization. This program is free to join and has already generated hundreds of dollars for Prosper schools. We look forward to watching it grow! To access your Kroger Plus Shopper's Card account, go to https://www.kroger.com/ account/enrollCommunityRewardsNow.
Returning Student Registration Parents of returning PISD students are reminded to register their school aged children online through InfoSnap. It is important for parents to complete this registration information yearly in order to ensure we have accurate information for your student. An automated email has been sent to parents containing information for each student for registration. If you did not receive an email with this information, please contact the Campus Registrar at your zoned campus. In order for students to be placed on a class list at elementary or to have a schedule made at secondary campuses, parents must complete the annual on-line registration process and provide the District with a new proof of residency. To access on-line registration, visit the Prosper ISD website (www.prosper-isd.net) and click on the parents tab.
New Student Registration For new student registration information, visit the Prosper ISD website (www.prosper-isd.net) and click on the parents tab, next choose Student Registration then scroll down to the 2016-2017 New Student Registration.
This web page will provide you with information regarding registration as well as provide you a link to our online registration system InfoSnap. From this web page click on either the English or Spanish link to be routed to InfoSnap.
Windsong: https://windsongranchpto.membershiptoolkit.com/
Once you have completed the online registration process and you received the submission confirmation page, your child’s information will be reviewed for completion. If it is determined that we have all of the information we need you will receive an email from the campus registrar indicating that your child qualifies as “Fly-By”. This means that you do not have to go to the campus to complete the registration process. However, if you do not receive a “Fly-By” email within a week of submitting your child’s information please contact the campus registrar to make an appointment to meet with them to complete the registration process. On average this process will take anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes so please plan accordingly. In addition, please bring to the appointment copies of the following documents for your child:
Transportation
• Birth Certificate • Social Security Card • Immunization Record • Proof of Residency (Current electric or water bill - if moving to a new home that is not yet completed please bring a copy of your new home contract and a letter from your builder on their letterhead stating your name, the physical address of the home and the expected closing date. If you have just recently closed on your new home but do not have a utility bill yet, please bring a copy of your closing statement. If you are living with another family within Prosper ISD, you and the person you are living with will need to complete a residency affidavit. The person whose name appears on the utility bill for the home will need to come with you and bring their driver’s license in order to sign the affidavit. This must be signed and notarized by both the homeowner and the parent before the registration process can be completed. A notary will be available at the New Student Registration event) • Previous Report Card • Official Transcript (HS Students only) • Driver’s License • Custody Documents (if applicable) • Special Education (Individualized Education Plan) Documentation (if applicable) • Gifted and Talented Documentation (if applicable) If you are having difficulty with the online registration process you may contact InfoSnap directly at 866-752-6850.

Prosper ISD continues to bring quality transportation to the Prosper community through district-owned and supervised school bus services. All bus routes are equipped with propane-powered school buses, all with seatbelts, air conditioning, and video surveillance. New information is now available on the Prosper ISD website under Transportation. We will be continually updating our site as we get closer to the start of school. If you have any questions, please contact us at pisdbus@ prosper-isd.net. As a reminder, students who live within 2 miles of their designated campus are not eligible for transportation. In rare cases, the PISD School Board has defined certain routes as hazardous because of the absence of adequate sidewalks or crosswalks as defined by board policy. For added safety, PISD will post additional crossing guards at busy intersections to assist students walking to and from school. Please note the 2 mile walk zones and crossing guard locations are located on the PISD Transportation website.
School Supplies The PISD elementary schools, Rogers MS and Reynolds MS offered parents the opportunity to purchase school supply packs in the spring. At the elementary schools, pre-ordered supplies will be on the student’s desk at Meet the Teacher Night. School Supply packs for middle school students will be distributed during the first few days of school. High school students simply need paper and a pen the first day of school, and their individual teachers will provide students with the course requirements. If you did not previously purchase a school supply pack and are interested in doing so, there will be a few available for purchase during middle school schedule pick up and elementary meet the teacher night. These extra packs will be available on a first come first serve basis and once they are all purchased, no additional ones will be available. If you choose not to purchase a school supply pack, school supply lists for each campus can be found at www.prosper-isd.net / parents / school supply lists.
After School Care All of the elementary schools will offer after school care through the AlphaBEST. Parents interested in registering their children in grades K-5th grades for the AlphaBEST Afterschool Program can access the enrollment forms and information on the Prosper ISD website. Parents may visit the AlphaBEST Afterschool website at http://alphabest. org/ or contact them directly by calling 972.668.0640 or emailing kwebster@alphabest.org for more information. Representatives from AlphaBEST will also be available at campus back-to-school events to meet, greet, answer questions, and give information. However, in order to attend the AlphaBEST Afterschool Care the first week of school, please register no later than August 12th. Sign up today!

Prosper ISD Nearing 10,000 Students!! We are excited and getting ready for another great school year serving the best families in the State of Texas. PISD is opening two new schools this month – Windsong Ranch Elementary located on the west side of Prosper in the Windsong Ranch development and Hughes Elementary located south of Hwy. 380 in the Prestwyck development bringing the total up to 10 schools serving PISD students. Just fifteen years ago we had three schools serving just under 1,000 students – now we are growing more than that each year! Each new year brings new challenges and this school year will be no different. We have worked diligently to hire the best teachers and staff across the state to provide an outstanding educational experience for our students. The partnerships forged between our schools, parents, and community are essential to ensure a successful school year. Thank you ahead of time for your patience and understanding with the inevitable delays, traffic jams, and lengthy car lines that are a part of the beginning of every school year. As parents learn their most efficient and strategic approaches to drop off/pick up, lines and times will improve. Please reference the district and campus websites for back to school announcements regarding all the events leading up to the first day of school. Also, don’t forget to subscribe to the various district and campus newsletters to stay informed about all things PISD throughout the school year. For specific questions regarding your child, please contact your child’s campus at your convenience. We want the first day of school to run smoothly for your child, so please do your part to make sure that the campus has all the necessary information to best ensure that your child has the appropriate classes. With your help, this is going to be a great school year. I can’t wait to see all of the returning students and meet all the new ones – this is the best time of the year! WE ARE PROSPER!!

Q&A
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” -Aristotle PROSPER Magazine had the distinct pleasure of getting to know Prosper High School’s new Head Football Coach – Brandon Schmidt. He’s a family man, has a passion for the student athletes and a lifetime of love for the sport. He is excited to build upon the tradition of the Prosper football program. We are excited to introduce you to him, and look forward to watching him succeed on the field!
Who is Coach Brandon Schmidt? I was born in Richmond, Texas and grew up a coach's kid in the southeast Texas region. I attended La Marque High School in La Marque, Texas where my Dad was a coach and I played offensive line all through high school. I then went on to play college football on the offensive line at Sam Houston State University, where my senior year I was the starting center and elected Team Captain. I've been married to my wonderful wife, Katie, for 14 years. We met in her hometown of La Porte, TX, which was my first coaching job out of college. Katie wasn't living there at the time, but her sister introduced us and the rest is history. Before moving to Prosper, we lived in La Porte for a couple of years and then in the Austin area for the past decade where I coached at Cedar Park High School. Katie works in IT, although she is a former teacher/school administrator, and we're fortunate to balance both of our careers with three children who bring a lot of fun and surprises to our life. Our two girls attend Cockrell Elementary where Sophie (8) will be a third grader and Sabrina (6) will be a 1st grader. The girls enjoy ballet, soccer, and summer track. We are also foster-to-adopt parents so, not able to be pictured, is our son Carter (5 months) whom we hope we can finalize adopting in the coming year. We are passionate about kids, obviously! As a family, we enjoy spending time with friends, live music, cooking, traveling, camping, and being outdoors. We are active members of Prosper First United Methodist Church.

Share with us your coaching experience, including your time at Prosper High School. The 2016 school year will begin my 16th year as a coach. I started my career coaching and teaching at La Porte High School (2001-2004) and then moved on to Stony Point High School in Round Rock (20042006). From Stony Point I went to Cedar Park (2006-2015) where we were fortunate enough, after much hard work and dedication, to win a State Championship in 2012, as well as make an appearance in the State Championship game in 2014 (we lost by 3 points during the last 15 seconds of the game; it was a tough loss). I had a surreal year when at the end of the 2010 season, I witnessed all of my starting offensive linemen receive Division I scholarships. That was something that was really special and something I may never see again in my lifetime as a coach. I had one go on to play at Rice, one go on to play at UT where he was the starting center for the better part of his 4 years there, and a handful of others who went on to successful college football careers and education pursuits. I have always been a varsity offensive line coach, and I have a heart for that since I played offensive line all through high school and college, but have been fortunate to learn and grow as a coordinator and coach under other exceptional coaches in Texas high school football.
What do you believe that you add to Prosper's Football Program? I hope to continue to bring pride, integrity, and a passion for kids to the Prosper program. I won't be doing it alone though, as I am fortunate to have a staff working with me that are exceptional in their coaching abilities and their character. It's humbling for me to work alongside this amazing staff and I hope the kids and the community realize how genuine and outstanding these guys are. We are a family and we bring the mentality of family and focus to the program. I never have to go to work, as I truly love what I do, and that feeling allows me to bring my best with me every day for the kids, my staff, and the community.

What are your goals for developing our Prosper teams?

My vision, at the core, is for the 2016 Prosper Eagle football team to be the best version of itself every single day. We can only control what we do as a team so our actions should be deliberate and of the highest caliber. We want to be successful on the field but, more importantly, we want to be successful in the classroom, in the community, and in life. It is my goal to foster that success through the growth of our players, while teaching them to communicate, be responsible, and be accountable.
$125 mth full service for NEW pools Complimentary filter cleaning with new pool service ($125 value)
What is your coaching philosophy? To always build kids up. That is how they will become the best version of their self, on and off the football field. Now don't get me wrong, that doesn't mean I won't let them know when they mess up or make a ridiculous mistake, as my former and current players will quickly tell you, but it's always about the mistake not the person that they are or hope to become. They need guidance to develop and grow, and that's what I strive to give them.
What are you most excited about in coaching for Prosper? The community, hands down. Prosper is my dream job. I waited a while before becoming a head coach because I was waiting for just the right situation. I have always wanted to coach in one high school town where the community was completely behind the school system and the football program with an exceptional group of people coming together for kids. I realize Prosper is growing like crazy and there won't always be one high school, but I hope to play a part in laying the foundation and setting a precedence for other programs as the district grows.

What has been your greatest accomplishment as a coach? Guiding and working with young men so that they become the best version of themselves and grow into successful, great men is my most important accomplishment. It's my passion and my life's work. Seeing young men I have coached go on to become educated, upstanding men with strong character and work ethic is why I do what I do. There just can't be enough good guys in the world and I like to think I play some small part in contributing to that.
Tell us about how you have seen the team grow and change with the growth of the district? How do you think things will change now that you are Head Coach?
football and go straight basketball, so his dad asked me to talk to him about that and the importance of not narrowing options as a 10th grader. Well, I talked to him, we developed a strong relationship, and he went on to play as the starting left tackle at Baylor (full scholarship) for the past 4 years. His name is Spencer Drango and he was just drafted by the Cleveland Browns, so now he's in the NFL. He was and is a great athlete, but I get greater satisfaction out of the great man he is. I also coached his brother before him and have enjoyed getting to know that family, among many other families whose kids I have coached. Another great memory, is that of kid I coached
What is your most memorable moment as a high school athlete?
I've watched this team transform in a very short amount of time based on their willingness to be there for each other and buy into the family and focus approach. We are a family and we have a strong focus. As Prosper grows, we hope our program will too in order to reach more student athletes and continue growing pride in this unique community. As far as things changing with me as the head coach--- Honestly, from what we did last year, other than building on that success, things will not change that much. This was one of the first things I shared with parents and students when it was announced that Coach Ross was leaving. He and I have worked together for the better part of 10 years now and we are very much in sync with how to be successful. We will continue to work the plan and build the Prosper program for success.
My most memorable moment, or moments, as a high school athlete was playing in two state championship games, one in the Astrodome and one at the University of Texas. Unfortunately, we lost those games to a strong Stephenville High School program coached by Art Briles. I still don't like to hear the word "Stephenville" but I am grateful for such rich experiences as a high school player.
What is one interesting, fun fact that most people do not know about you? I actually lost my wife's engagement ring while on a trip in Mexico, the trip where I planned to propose. Luckily, I got the ring back and our life together was set in motion but I definitely was freaking out under the circumstances. There is an honest guy named Carlos down there who could have changed the course of my life.
What is your prediction for the 2016 season? My prediction is that we will continue to build on the successes from last year and grow our program in a way that continues to develop pride in our community. We expect excellence and will continue to use our 4 core values to guide and grow our success. These core values are the foundation for everything that we teach and develop in our program: service to others, honoring the team, belief in the process, and expecting excellence. If we do these things, we will continue to be successful as team and likely even surprise ourselves with the level we can take things to.
What is one of your all-time favorite stories or memories as a coach? I have many, so choosing just one is really tough. A funny story is that one of the best offensive line kids I have ever coached wanted to quit

adamantly said "No." The teacher pressed her and asked again "Are you sure your dad is not a teacher? Where does he work?" The teacher said she responded, somewhat annoyed, "No, he's not a teacher! He works for the Black Rain <this was the name of the school's football defense>. He's a coach and drives a bus." Needless to say, we had to talk to her and explain that daddy also taught history students in a classroom while at work. The teacher was quite amused by it all once she pieced it together. Also, our youngest daughter also once said she wanted to be a timber wolf (my mascot at the time) in the nativity scene at church, not a sheep. Everyone got a good laugh out of her saying that. These are pretty typical coach's kid stories, but they definitely keep us laughing.
all through high school who is finishing up his last year of playing eligibility at Texas State, although he successfully completed his undergrad degree this past year. He was the first kid in his family to go to college and he is an outstanding young man whom I love like a son. Most of my favorite stories involve seeing these young men turn into great men through hard work, commitment, and a never quit attitude. I am humbled to call them my friends once I am no longer their coach. Related to my family and my being a coach, a funny story about my oldest daughter was that when she was in kindergarten I'd emailed her teacher to tell her if she needed anything regarding our daughter to please feel free to email or call me anytime. The teacher noted my school email address and said to our daughter "Is your dad a teacher?" and our daughter
What else would you like for Prosper to know about you and your values? This is the quote I like personally and that I tend to use the most with our kids: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. -Aristotle In addition, our theme this year is EVERYBODY! The kids know it and we are working to apply it religiously across our program. It means a lot of things, but first and foremost it means that success is never achieved by individuals alone (despite perception of others). Success requires dedication by all and the support of others. Everybody on this team matters and plays a critical role in our program. We strive to improve together. We share tribulations and celebrations together.

Pack Healthy School Lunches and Snacks Busy parents know that packing healthy lunches and snacks that kids will eat and not throw out or trade day after day is a challenge. For kids with food allergies – which, according to the CDC, is one in 13 kids or about two per classroom – or who attend a peanut-free school, it gets even more difficult. Here are some tips for packing healthy and delicious allergy-friendly lunches and snacks that fuel kids’ active minds and bodies all day long.
Send a Kid-Approved Snack There will be birthdays and celebrations in school where the snacks may not be allergy-friendly. Talk with your child’s teacher and make sure they understand his or her dietary restrictions. Send a snack they can eat for the teacher to keep on hand for these occasions. Or, if it’s your child’s birthday, send something delicious everyone can enjoy together. One to try: EnviroKidz Granola Bars and Crispy Rice Bars, the first organic, gluten-free, peanut-free bars for kids, in tasty Chocolate Chip and Strawberry Granola Bars and Berry Blast and Chocolate Crispy Rice Bars. The strawberry and berry blast flavors are also dairy-free, and 1 percent of sales from all four flavors go to help endangered species.
Make It Positive Instead of focusing on the things your child can’t eat, focus on all of the delicious foods they can enjoy. You can look online for ideas and talk about them with your child, involving them in the process to come up with a list of things they love. Try gluten-free waffles instead of bread for sandwiches, nut-free butters like sunflower seed butter, smoothies or soups in a thermos, or fruit with dairy-free yogurt for dipping. Make sure to stock the fridge and pantry with these items so you can easily pack lunches without stress. You can even post the list on the refrigerator and let them choose what they want.
Go for the Gold Standard: Organic If your little one has allergies, it’s important to think about lunches in a holistic way, not just avoiding certain foods. "When packing allergy-friendly foods, considering the quality of all the ingredients, not just the ones it’s ‘free of,’ is really important,” said Ashley Koff, registered dietitian. “The easiest choice: organic ingredients, which means non-GMO, because they give you what the body recognizes easily and avoids ingredients that can detract from better nutrition and better health.”

Make It Fun Just because you are avoiding certain foods doesn’t mean that lunch or snack time can’t be delicious and fun. Pack foods in a variety of colors and shapes, including rolls and stacks. Use cookie cutters to make fun shapes and create pops, kebabs or other easy recipes that use kid- and allergyfriendly foods and make eating a blast. Additionally, a simple, sweet note or picture drawn on a napkin can be a nice lunchtime surprise. Packing lunches and snacks for kids with allergies can be a challenge, but with some planning you can find delicious, nutritious foods your child will love. Find more allergy-friendly recipes and lunch and snack tips at envirokidz.com.
Fruit and Granola Bar Kebabs Serves: 8-10 4- 5 varieties of colorful fruits Star or heart-shaped cookie cutter (optional) 1 box peanut-free EnviroKidz Granola Bars kebab skewers Wash and slice fruit into bite-size chunks large enough to withstand a skewer. Use cookie cutter for fruit shape at top of kebab. Once fruit is ready, cut up granola bars, about 3 squares each, and begin layering kebabs. Serve immediately.

In an effort to continue to provide outstanding care in a personalized manner, Dr. Corbridge is excited to welcome Dr. Kim Rogers to the Corbridge Orthodontics team. Dr. Rogers is a native North Texan, born and raised in Plano, Texas. She attended The University of Texas at Austin on academic scholarships and graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Biology with University Honors. Dr. Marisol Trautmann, DDS, MS
After 25 years of practicing dentistry, Dr. Trautmann still wakes up every day with a renewed commitment to tackle the day and the aspiration to change someone’s life. She feels blessed to have the opportunity to practice her passion and her career – she loves what she does. Dr. Trautmann has had the pleasure of calling Prosper her home for the last ten years, and with the help of this wonderful community, her three sons are growing into great teenagers. She says there is no place that she would rather be. Dr. Trautmann achieved her specialty degree in Prosthodontics at Ohio State University in 1997 after getting a General Dentist degree in 1991. Prosthodontics is the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, and appearance of healthy teeth. She treats patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. She is also a lifelong learner and is always looking for opportunities to improve her skills through further training on the best techniques to treat the most common and the most complicated oral conditions. It might seem like Dr. Trautmann’s job is to restore teeth with crowns and fillings and replace missing teeth, but that is not the way she approaches her profession. She aims to develop candid and sincere relationships with her patients, to relieve them from pain, to change their smiles, and to improve their lives. Dr. Trautmann helps patients build confidence for interviews and new jobs, and she assists them in preparing for wedding pictures and graduations. She enjoys hearing tooth fairy stories when baby teeth give way to permanent teeth, and she gives grandmothers and grandfathers their speech back so they can read stories to their grandchildren. Dr. Trautmann also recommends sleep apnea treatments so patients can sleep better and function optimally. Most of all, however, she guides patients in understanding their dental challenges and works with them to achieve oral health so they can ultimately feel proud of their teeth. She keeps looking forward to offering this kind of relationship and service to all of Prosper. The practice philosophy at Prosper Dental Health is totally patient oriented, focusing on your health and your beautiful smile. They say that the eyes are windows to your soul. Dr. Trautmann would add that your beautiful smile is a window to your overall health. Prosper Dental Health enjoys offering you the latest technology to help you have a wonderful experience at their dental office. They also hold a sedation license so you are able to feel comfortable and at ease during your treatment. Let Dr. Trautmann and her team welcome you to Prosper Dental Health. They hope you can come soon to enjoy a rewarding dental experience and look forward to treating you and your family.

Early Times in the Prosper Area D
epending on when settlers came to Texas, many did not have to fight with the Indians. Most of them were friendly, peaceful and would trade goods with the settlers. The Caddo Indians were the first in this part of the country. There were three different groups of Caddo’s… the Hasinai group, which was basically located in Southeastern Texas; the Caddo group, which was the main group, was located in East Texas; and the Wichita group, which was primarily located on the headwaters of the Trinity River and along the Red River. These Indians grew their own corn, pumpkins, beans and squash to supplement their own hunting and fishing for food. They also had fruit trees and nuts. As the white settlers moved into areas (outside of the Collin County area) where other tribes were located, many other tribes were forced into this area. The Tonkawa’s (called the Tonk’s) had a village on the East Fork of the Trinity River. Certain tribes of the Kiowa’s, Apache and Comanche’s came from the Northwest as they were driven from their land. Also, groups from the Cherokees, Coushatta’s, Delaware, Seminoles and Kickapoo’s came from the East as they were also driven from their lands. Sometimes the Indians would fight among themselves. The Tonkawa’s and Kiowa’s were about to have a big battle about two miles north of Mckinney. Apparently they were stealing each other’s horses and were trying to get together and solve their differences. The Cherokee’s hated both tribes and planned an attack while they were negotiating. During the attack, four Cherokee’s were killed. All day both sides held their ground and the parties finally dispersed and did not attack again. There were a few skirmishes between settlers and Indians, but mostly it was the Indians going through houses, stealing cows or horses and gunfire with the Indians with very few casualties. However, the last Indian killing was in 1844. Jeremiah Muncey, his wife, their three-year-old child and a friend named McBain Jameson had been killed by Indians on Rowlett Creek near where Highway 75 is now located. The Muncey’s had three more children,

one was at the Throckmorton house and was saved and the other two were missing and never seen alive again. Reports were the two kids were taken alive by the Indians and later killed. One Collin County census shows 150 people in the county in 1842 and a population of 1950 in 1850. Most of the western part of Collin County was sparsely populated before 1840. As settlers arrived, there was sufficient timber to build a small house. Usually a one room house was built. Many houses were built near a stream because of the water and also for the fishing. If they did not have water they would dig a shallow well. As families grew, additional rooms would be constructed. Houses were built with logs that were positioned on top of each other with mud and straw placed in between the logs to keep the rain and snow out. Roofs were made of slab wood and weighted down by poles. In the beginning, families could be miles apart with no close neighbors. All of the work would have to be done by the family. As others moved in they would help each other with house building, barn raising, working in the fields and other chores around the home. There were plenty of animals so all that was needed for meat was a rifle. They learned many of the Indian ways to grow their own vegetables, fruit trees, pecan trees and harvested berries and nuts. Next month, we will discuss how homes in the mid 1800’s were furnished and what the day-to-day living conditions were like for these settlers.

FreeStyle
Shop Your Closet To Follow Fall Fashions Do you ever feel tired of trying to keep up with trends? Or you just stick to the few pieces you usually wear because you don’t want to look off-trend? With social media, trends cycle around much faster than before. You’ll always look on trend if you stick to mostly classic cuts. If you’re feeling adventurous or want to kick your style up a notch, here are the colors, textures, patterns, and shine that are popping up everywhere this fall- plus ideas you can try to put together fresh, on-trend outfits using your closet!
Colors Give your blacks and whites a break and opt for less expected neutrals like grays and shades of tan. Love color? Try pairing a dusty or rose pink with yellow. You could also opt for a more golden shade, like we did with this skirt.
Textures Everything luxury is in! Think fur, velvet, lace, and ruffles. You can even combine them for a really interesting visual look. Want to add a piece to your closet? A faux fur vest looks great over a simple button up now, and you can use it to dress up your little black dress for winter weddings.
Patterns The traditional plaid is a safe bet, or you could branch out with leopard, a brocade, like this skirt, or a floral pattern. Try adding leopard to your favorite go-to outfits for great visual interest. Because it’s made up of neutral colors, it acts as a neutral. Pair it with any and everything!
Shine The more shine the better this fall! Try combining different types of shine, like metal detailing, silky fabric, and a sparkly shoe or add just a hint of shine to your basics with your favorite piece of jewelry for a more subtle look. Try these tricks to pull together outfits this fall that put a fresh spin on your basics! Caitlin Skidmore is the creator of Greater Than Rubies, where she teaches women how to shop their closets. You can contact her at caitlin@greaterthanrubies.net.

In His Presence
A New Beginning... Don’t you love new beginnings? A new start? I know that for thousands of students, parents and teachers in our region, this will be the case as soon as schools such as Prestonwood Christian Academy and school districts throughout North Texas open their doors. Remember what it felt like as a kid to begin a new school year? There was such anticipation and excitement walking in the door of your new classroom and getting to know the teacher and settling in with your new classmates. It was a time of endless possibilities and great expectations. The same can be said about returning to Prestonwood or your church home this fall. Maybe you and your family have attended sporadically over the summer. Well, it’s time to gear up! It’s time to reconnect … to plug in. This is a great time to experience a new beginning. Prestonwood will welcome you with open arms! The church is not an organization that you join—it’s a family to which you belong. And I encourage you, if you do not have a church home and you want to share in the mission of Christ, to come experience Prestonwood. We’re not looking for joiners or just more members; we want you to be a faithful witness for Christ in the power of God’s Spirit and to be a part of our ministry.
Maybe you’ve never been to church; maybe it’s been a long time since you’ve been to a service; you’ve distanced yourself from your Savior. A new start awaits you. There’s nothing more exciting than when someone who was lost is found; someone who is away from home comes home. The Bible is God’s story of redemption. From cover to cover it is the story of His rescue mission for us; His triumph over sin and death and judgment and hell; and the promise of eternal life to all who believe. As a matter of fact, Scripture is clear as to why Jesus came to earth. He said in Luke 19:10, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” I pray for a new beginning of obedience to God, repenting of sin, asking Him to cleanse us from sin, restoring our souls, praying the prayer of the psalmist that revival would come; revive us again in the midst of the years. I pray that you draw a circle around your own life and your own place of prayer and say, “Lord, in me, send the fire that I might obey You and do Your will every day.” Endless possibilities and great expectations—we find them in our Lord and Savior. In Him and Him alone we find hope, forgiveness and salvation. He is our new beginning. Dr. Jack Graham is pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church, which has campuses in Prosper and Plano.
“In Him and Him alone we find hope, forgiveness and salvation. He is our new beginning.”
