ummer is officially here and, in addition to dealing with the heat, our thoughts become dominated by vacations, picnics, backyard cookouts, trips to the lake, and lots of other outdoor fun activities. Students are out of school for a couple of months, and moms and dads often take a few weeks away from work. All in all, it’s a great time for everyone to set aside their worries and enjoy the peace and quiet of a getaway. Well, almost everyone. Our police and fire personnel are still on duty. Of course, they take vacations like everyone else, but the police and fire departments do not close for the summer. The departments don’t casually shut down for a well-deserved rest. On the contrary, there are always police officers and firefighters ready to answer the call, no matter what day, no matter what time. While the average increase is slight, there is nevertheless a slight uptick in the number of calls that dispatchers, who also keep their shop open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, get during the summer. The rise in Emergency Medical Service calls reflects the effect that summer heat can have on people. Kids out playing during the day also result in higher EMS calls, as do the increased number of car accidents, with more people on the roads during the longer summer days. Structure fires certainly do not take a vacation during the summer either. Carelessness with open flames seems to be an unfortunate part of some cookouts. Police officers also experience an active summer, and not always for good reasons. Domestic disagreements sometimes accompany family outings. And, the heat of summer seems to fuel the flames of road rage incidents. But, as I have said many times, Prosper residents are fortunate to have such a tremendous public safety team in place. Chiefs Ronnie Tucker and Doug Kowalski are consummate professionals, and their departments reflect that professionalism through and through. Both departments, like Prosper, are growing. Each is either expanding or will do so in the near future, hiring more personnel to keep up with the demands of our growing population.

WeAreProsper.com | July 2016
Over the last year, the Police Department has hired four new officers and they plan to add more in the coming years, as the need arises. Our police officers, whether new or not, train constantly, ensuring that they provide the highest level of service to our residents, businesses and visitors. As a matter of fact, the department has embarked on a journey that we hope will result in attaining Recognized status from the Texas Police Chiefs Association. That is the highest level of certification that the association can bestow on a law enforcement agency. Similarly, the Fire Department is in the process of hiring the final group of six firefighters/paramedics for Fire Station No. 2 on the west side of Town. The new station is on schedule to be finished at the end of summer, and the fire engines that will work out of the new station are on order and on schedule. As you will recall, Prosper will share the station with an EMS unit from Little Elm for about two years. By then, we anticipate that the population on that side of Town will warrant our own EMS unit. So, as you enjoy the summer with your family and friends, remember that there are people on duty who, through their training and dedication, will be there if you need them.

ride in the Sky 2016 was a tremendous success! Over 10,000 people convened upon Frontier Park on July 1st to enjoy a good old-fashioned Independence celebration. The park came alive with the sounds of children laughing, music playing, friends and families visiting and enjoying our wonderful community. There was plenty of food, inflatable slides for the kids, bounce houses, an obstacle course, giant hamster ball races, live entertainment, classic cars, the charity softball game and of course, a great fireworks show!! The party started at 5:00pm, and although the temperature was soaring, there was a nice breeze – just enough to cool you down when the heat got too much to bear! As the spectators began pouring into the park, they had a huge array of shopping vendors and food trucks to visit and the kids had two baseball fields full of games and activities to play on. This year’s Kid Zone was sponsored by Childrens Health, and the highlights for the kids were the inflatable Obstacle Course and the giant Hamster Ball races. As families wandered around, many ended up at the pavilion by Windmill Playground to enjoy some live music and look at the beautiful classic cars and trucks at the 3rd Annual Car Show, which was sponsored by American Bank of Texas. Around 6:30, the crowd gathered around Field 5 for the posting of the flags by Prosper Fire Department’s Honor Guard. As they marched the flags through the park and onto the field, you could see and feel the patriotism from the community. This is the reason we gather each year to celebrate – we love Prosper, we love Texas and we love America! As the Honor Guard posted the colors, the crowd enjoyed to a beautiful acapella rendition of our National Anthem sung by Prosper High School Senior Julianne Lacoure. It was a beautiful ceremony, topped off with a few fireworks to get the evening going!!

Next up on the entertainment schedule was the Charity Softball game, benefitting Prosper Education Foundation and Cornerstone Assistance Network. Local residents, Prosper ISD staff and administration, students, Town Council representatives and community volunteers enjoyed a fun game of softball in an effort to raise money for their organizations. Calling the game again this year was Assistant Fire Chief Stuart Blasingame, which is always a good time! For first time in Pride in the Sky history, PEF prevailed…winning 9-6 over the Cornerstone team. While some played barefoot and some did acrobatics on the field, it was a great game…and the ultimate end result is that we raised some money to help our neighbors in need, send our students to college and recognize the efforts that our teachers at Prosper ISD give each and every day – WIN / WIN!! For the 2nd year in a row, we booked the band In10City to perform live at the pavilion. They brought their best, light show and all, to entertain the spectators seated on the grass while they waited on the fireworks to begin. They sang, they danced, they led the crowd in fun…they are always a special treat and we are honored to thank Dr. Manju Pandy and Prosper Family Medicine for sponsoring this portion of the evening. As the sun began to set, all of the spectators grabbed their chairs and blankets to get the perfect seat for the fireworks. This year’s display was compliments of Cedarbrook Media and the Town of Prosper – and it was bigger and better than ever! As the shells exploded, the Prosper sky was filled with bright colors and noise…for 15 minutes, all eyes were focused upward. Right before the finale, a giant Prosper “P” was lit ablaze with green fireworks that burned until the end. A perfect ending to a perfect Independence Day celebration in Prosper!! mong the many and varied metrics and measurements American cities and towns use to calculate their quality of life are such things as public safety, ease of access to transportation, school rankings, cooperation among local governmental entities and the availability of parks and recreation. While appearing last in our admittedly incomplete list above, the important role that parks and recreation programs play in determining the level of a municipality’s quality of life is undeniable. Often, families will make the critical choice of where to live based, in large part, on how many parks are in a community, and how abundant recreation programs are. “There is little doubt that communities are often ranked according to their commitment to parks, trails, open spaces and recreation programs,” says Will Mitchell, Parks and Recreation Manager. “All things being equal, the city or town with the more significant commitment to parks and recreation services is seen as a more desirable place to live,” he said. “And, in Prosper’s case, it’s evident that the Council, the staff and the community are in full agreement on the desire to have

world-class parks, trails, open space amenities and recreation programs.” Mitchell made reference to a survey recently conducted on Toyota employees who are expected to move to the North Texas area in support of their new offices. The second-highest item of importance to them was outdoor recreational opportunities, surpassed only by good public schools. The existence of parks and recreation is also important in enhancing property values. Mitchell said quality parks, recreation, and open spaces help to create a high quality of life that attracts tax-paying business and residents to communities. Corporate CEOs say employee quality of life is the third-most important factor in locating a new business. July is National Park and Recreation Month throughout the nation, and emphasis on the role that parks and recreation play in a community’s livelihood is highlighted. The month-long commemoration was established in 1985 and was entered into the Congressional Record in 2009. In conjunction with this national effort, a calendar of family activities scheduled for July is posted at www.ProsperParksandRec.org.
National Parks and Recreation Month is a good time to take advantage of the Town’s existing parks, trails and recreation programs. Fun summer programs are available, giving kids a chance to flex their imaginations and their muscles right at home. Youth camps and classes began last month and continue through midAugust. Ongoing adult programs include DDP YOGA, men’s softball and Stroller Strides (Fit4Mom). For details on the full line-up of camps and classes for all ages, please visit www.ProsperParksandRec.org.

Also, be sure to check the website for information on “Fun Fridays at Frontier.” Youngsters, along with a parent, and teens are invited each Friday at 10 a.m. for an hour-long crafts and activities session at the pavilion at Frontier Park. No registration is required. Parks in Prosper are an important part of the municipal landscape. The Town’s signature park is Frontier Park, located on Frontier Parkway between Dallas North Parkway and Coleman St. Its amenities include a main pavilion and a smaller one, three baseball fields, two softball fields, concession area, restroom facilities, 11 soccer fields, a fishing pond, lots of open space, a splash pad and the community-built Windmill Playground. And, recently, the Town Council approved a further expansion of Frontier Park with the addition of the north end amenities. What is today an empty plot of land along the park’s northern border will soon brim with additional sport and recreational facilities. The new facility includes three lighted, artificial turf softball/baseball fields and bullpens. One outfield will be 225 feet deep and the other two will extend to 275 feet. The facility also will include a concession stand, two lighted artificial-turf multi-purpose fields, a hike and bike trail, a pavilion, a custom-designed pedestrian bridge spanning the pond, and a lacrosse practice wall. Additional parking will be added as well. These additions are in the design development stage, with construction slated to begin later this year.

In addition to Frontier Park, the Town has numerous parks throughout the community, ranging from half an acre to over 20 acres, including Town Lake Park, Eagles Landing Park, Folsom Park, Pecan Grove Park., Whitley Place Park, Boyer Park, Preston Lakes Park and Fire Station Park, and the recent new additions Cedar Grove Park and Prairie Park. “Parks form the lifeblood of many communities,” added Mitchell. “They are where people meet, talk, share, and strengthen community bonds. Without them, the quality of life in our community would most certainly be lacking an important piece.”

CONCEPTS 8 Types of Natural Stone Decking for Pools By Patti Plummer, Luxury Pools
The area around your swimming pool is one of the most important parts of your poolscape. Not only is it where everyone congregates while poolside, it also plays a key role in defining your pool’s personality and style. There are a variety of manmade and natural materials that create superior pool decks, but those made from natural stone are matchless companions to sophisticated pool settings. It is important, however, to keep in mind that in order for natural stone to retain its beauty around a pool, it should be treated with an approved sealer so it can handle weather changes, pool chemicals, and hard use. Here are a few of the more popular natural stone types. Deciding which one to use depends on how you will use your pool and your property’s architectural style. Travertine Travertine is one of the more popular materials for building luxury pool decks. This material’s reputation for being hard-wearing yet beautiful has been known since ancient times. Today, the material is in as much demand as ever, especially with pool builders who have come to depend on this material’s porous nature and tendency to remain cool to the touch. Because travertine typically absorbs water instantly, decks made of it are virtually slip-free. Plus, it can handle all types of weather conditions, including freeze/thaw. Ordinarily mined from quarries in Turkey, Italy, Iran, Mexico, and the USA, travertine usually comes in ivory, light brown, brown and gold. Rich and luxurious in look and feel, pool designers will generally choose this material for artistic settings. Travertine is commonly found in one of three finishes: tumbled (textured and porous), honed (smooth and matte), and polished (smooth and shiny).

WeAreProsper.com | July 2016
Flagstone Another pool deck material that is frequently considered is flagstone, a common term for any type of flat slab of natural paving. Rich in earthtoned colors and textures, this type of stone is ideal for around a pool because it has a non-slip surface, resists moisture and heat, and can withstand constant use. Quarried all over the world, flagstone is low maintenance because of its highly dense makeup and will usually hold up for years. Easily installed, this material is the choice of those who like a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors, and who also want a one-ofa-kind creation.

Slate

Slate is a type of flagstone that has been used by builders for centuries. Heavy and durable, slate is easy to install and can be cut in varying lengths and widths. Colors range from dark blacks and brown to reds, rusts, purples, greens, to blue-grays. Quarries in Wales, Portugal, and the United Kingdom are known for high quality slate, but quarries in the U.S., especially those found in New York, also produce attractive, long-lasting slate. This type of stone decking is great for natural settings, but also suitable for traditional spaces as well.

Bluestone Bluestone is another kind of flagstone and is primarily quarried in the U.S., particularly in New York and Pennsylvania. Perfect for outdoor use, bluestone pavers are hardwearing, non-slip, and water resistant. Normally blue-gray in color, this material is commonly finished in one of three ways: thermal, which gives a uniform texture; natural cleft, which creates a non-uniform texture; and honed, which have a highly smooth appearance. Bluestone is an ideal choice of stone decking for an outdoor space that is surrounded by natural charm. Limestone Limestone is one of the world’s go-to building materials. Limestone, normally quarried from local sources, is hardy and can retain its beauty for years, no matter the weather. Many pool designers not only construct decks using this material, but also prefer to use its good looks for pool coping. Durable and alluring in a warm, earthy way, limestone can tolerate extreme weather changes and hold up against continuous use. Colors include gray, blue, tan, brown, and pink, among others, and can be cut in a variety of shapes and sizes, making it a stress-free choice of decking for many homeowners. Sandstone Sandstone is comprised of quartz grains and is usually light brown or red. Exceptionally hard-wearing, even-toned sandstone is the ideal companion for pools that are dramatic in color and texture. Pool designers like this selection because they can obtain the amount of material they need without worrying about an extreme color range.

Granite Granite is one of the hardest natural stones, which is why pool designers select it when looking for a consistent look that can stand the test of time. Made primarily of quartz, granite is usually dark in color, holds a shine, and repels water. Granite decking is perfect for pool designs that are natural in motif—but also a good choice for elegant settings. Coral Stone Coral stone, also known as coralina fossil stone and keystone, consists of coral and shell fossils, coral, sand, as well as limestone. This distinctive material is strengthened by nature to survive a number of climate extremes, saltwater, pool chemicals, and heavy foot traffic, making it ideal for pool decking and coping. Virtually non-slip, coral stone also absorbs only a minimum of heat and is easily maintained. Although commonly used in the tropics, coral stone can be enjoyed elsewhere, including in settings that experience a freeze/thaw cycle.

OUTDOOR LIVING
CONCEPTS Building an Outdoor Kitchen By Terri Shields, Luxury Pools
For the past few years, outdoor kitchens have grown in popularity. In fact, they are quickly becoming the must-have outdoor renovation of homeowners everywhere. Outdoor kitchens are ever-evolving, transforming into mirror replicas of their indoor counterparts. As homeowners increasingly prep more of their menus outdoors, the appliances they use to create their gourmet meals have become progressively more sophisticated and highly efficient. Today’s outdoor kitchens supply everything the backyard chef needs to assemble a soup-to-nut feast without stepping back indoors. Like any project, you need to consider your options before you begin. First question: what kinds of amenities do you want in your outdoor kitchen? How you answer this question is the key to success because your wish list will act as the road map for whoever designs and builds your kitchen. Outdoor Kitchen Appliances The nucleus of every kitchen is the cooking area, and like their indoor equivalents, the appliances you choose to include should be based on your cooking style and budget. Plus, if you plan to regularly cook large amounts of food, then you must take into consideration how well your chosen appliances can endure day in and day out activity, as well as the elements. There are a variety of ways to create a heat that is hot enough (or low and slow enough) to cook every portion of a meal--from grills, barbecues, and smokers to stoves, conventional ovens, and flattop grills. Many homeowners see the value of using a combination of units so they can have a variety of heat sources at their fingertips. Other options include warming drawers, teppanyaki grills, side burners, and rotisseries. And don’t forget a ventilation system—especially if your kitchen is covered. Plus, by diffusing the aromas around the backyard, you will draw your hungry guests from wide and far…no dinner bell required!

When the meal is being prepared and served outdoors, the chilling part is also crucial. The best way to keep food safe outdoors but also easily accessible is to include refrigerators, beverage chillers, ice machines, and cocktail stations in your plans. When the party is over, who wants to wash dishes or haul the dirty dinnerware back to the house? After celebrating your first big soiree, you will pat yourself on the back—for the party and for including a dishwasher and a sink.
Photo Courtesy of Seasons Lawn and Landscape
Countertops and Backsplashes Good workspace is worth its weight in gold, and when planning your outdoor kitchen, keep in mind that you need plenty of free space to prep, serve, and assemble all types of food, cookware, and serving pieces. Don’t skimp: you will thank yourself later. There is an array of durable yet beautiful materials that are best suited for crafting kitchen countertops and backsplashes for outdoor use. While many designers recommend granite, ceramic or glass tile, numerous outdoor kitchen planners also suggest cast-in-place concrete because of its resilience to the elements, durability, low maintenance, and the handsome look. Cabinets You never have enough storage space, so plan to include more cabinets than you think you will need. With a variety of weatherresistant materials on the market, which type you choose should be based on your property’s location, your personal taste, and your home’s style. Again, let your professional guide you towards the appropriate option. A few of the more popular cabinet materials are heavy-gauge stainless steel, solid marine-grade polymer, teak, cedar, and powder-coated metal made to appear like real wood. Flooring

Make sure you choose a floor that is safe and difficult to stain such as stone pavers with a low sheen sealer to protect them. You can get any pattern, color, and texture you like, just keep in mind that if your property is in an extreme climate, the installer must use the proper mix in order to ensure that the floor survives a freeze/thaw. Once all the details are in play and all of the amenities are in place, your kitchen will be open for business. Don’t be surprised if it becomes your family’s new favorite room. Outdoor Kitchen Lighting Lighting is important, for wellbeing and mood-creating. A lighting expert will design a schematic that handles all types of safety situations, including the paths leading from other areas of the outdoor space to the kitchen, around the grill and other appliances, over the dining area, and along the edges of the floor. Additionally, the difference between an average outdoor kitchen and one that has a high drama quotient is usually found in the lighting. Outdoor Comfort: Heating and Cooling It’s not always paradise outside, but that shouldn’t stop you from using your outdoor kitchen no matter the weather. Manufacturers are constantly creating new types of outdoor heating and cooling devices to suit every need. To enjoy your outdoor kitchen during cooler months or chilly evenings, you may opt for propane-fueled units like patio heaters, gas logs, space heaters, or go with something more aesthetic such as a custom fireplace, fire pit, fire column, fire tables and pellet-fueled stoves. For those times when you need relief from the heat and humidity, there are portable air coolers, misting systems, and if you have a roof over your outdoor kitchen, ceiling fans that are designed to keep the atmosphere cool and comfortable.

How to Find the ‘Holes’ in Your Closet That Will Make It More Versatile
FreeStyle
26
Are you tired of feeling like you have nothing to wear? Welcome to Free Style! We’re walking through how to use the clothes hanging in your closet to feel more confident, polished, and gorgeous! Today, we’re going to look at three easy strategies you can use to find the “holes” in your closet that will make it more versatile and feel more like you!
ONE: Use these two questions to figure out how to add more of what you love into your outfits and closet. Earlier in the series, we talked about using the questions, “What do I like?” and, “Why?” to start figuring out your unique style- even if you don’t have “the eye” for style! Taking a few minutes each morning to look at your outfit and ask, “What do I like about this outfit, and why?” will help you start to see the things that make you feel more comfortable, polished, and gorgeous. You can use what you learn to add more of what you love into your outfits, and when you shop, you’ll be able to add pieces to your closet that will make it feel more like you! Maybe that means you give an outfit a little edge with leather or destroyed denim, add feminine details like a bow or floral print, or use a piece of statement jewelry to give your outfit a little extra sparkle.

Prosper Family Owned & Operated
TWO: Use the anatomy of your closet to spot the “holes.” When you look at your clothes, they all fall into these eight categories, right? Sleeveless, short sleeve, and long sleeve tops, completer pieces (like cardigans, jackets, blazers, etc.), pants, skirts, shorts, and dresses. Looking at your closet, which categories do you have the least of? Focus on adding a few pieces there to give yourself more variety.
THREE: Figure out which types of
visual interest would give you more options.
If you’re feeling like you don’t have much to wear, or the outfits you’re putting together are boring, you’re probably not using a combination of color, texture, pattern, and shine. Adding touches of each, or just a few can make an outfit feel fun and interesting. Look at your closet. Which do you have the least ofcolor, texture, pattern, or shine? In the future, add a few pieces in that category to make your closet more versatile. Use these three strategies to add pieces to your closet that will really maximize what you already have and help you create outfits that are fun and feel more like you!

Remember When
L
ast month we talked about one particular family and the problems they had in coming from Tennessee to Texas. Over the next couple of months, we will be talking about the hardships and tough times the early settlers faced in coming to the Prosper area. But before we discuss the early times here in Collin County, I would like to share with you some history about how the Republic of Texas was founded in 1836. Texas had just won it battle with Mexico after Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna and his troops in the battle of San Jacinto, near Houston. The leaders of Texas wanted to form a Republic so in October 1836 forty-four men gathered in Columbia, Texas to draft the paperwork to form a Republic and in December of 1836 these people came up with some laws that would form the Republic of Texas. This was the first session of the Congress of Texas. In summary, following are some of the laws that were developed during these three months. 1. Formed the President’s cabinet 2. Defined the duties of the head of state 3. Organized the militia 4. Organized the Supreme Court 5. Organized and regulated the navy 6. Established fees assessed by the government 7. Regulated roads and ferries
28
WeAreProsper.com | July 2016
8. Allowed the sale of land scrip by the President 9. Adopted the Republic’s official seal 10. Organize and governed the army, courts martial, etc. As you probably know, Sam Houston became the first President of the Republic of Texas. After Texas won its independence from Mexico in 1836, it had 8,000,000 acres of land and not many families. So in 1841, the Republic of Texas signed its first contract with W.S. Peters and Company to bring people to Texas from the East. They actually ended up signing four contracts with W.S. Peters (Peters Colony) and extended the land area each time the contract was signed. Eventually this land covered much of North Texas. Each family was given some land, built a house and given a gun to kill the wild game. This started the people traveling from the East to come to a “new land” and begin a fresh start. Some people came to Collin County under the Peter’s Colony contract but it eventually terminated…yet people kept coming to Texas. Moving from the east and travelling west to the Prosper settlement during these days was a very large decision by the pioneers. Many had young children and to pull up stakes and move to another part of the country had to weigh heavily on their decision. Also, some women were pregnant. I do not think many of them knew the
hardships and tough times they were facing on their long journey to Texas. They could not take all their possessions, such as furniture, tables, beds, etc. The covered wagons would only hold so much and they brought just the necessities such a cooking utensils, plates, knives, forks, clothes, some food, etc. The men and women had to be hardy and tough individuals to withstand this trip. Many did not make it because of the difficulties and diseases along the way. Most of the food was obtained by hunting and fishing along the way. Most of them came with a wagon train but a few families decided to go it alone or with some other families. They had rivers to cross and many streams to ford. Roads were not good and very muddy when it rained. Weather sometimes was a big factor, as were the bands of unfriendly Indians who could attack at any time. Can you imagine riding in a covered wagon every day for two or three months and facing all the dangers and obstacles during their trip? Once they arrived in the western part of Collin County they had to get their land, stake it out, get it recorded in the land records in McKinney and then find the lumber to build it. There were not many roads, so most of the settlers had to build those as well. We’ll find out next month how the settlers that came to Texas learned to live and share land with the native Indian tribes.

In His Presence
The Spoken Word Is A Powerful Tool... It has been used throughout human history for good and ill -- to bless and to bring freedom, and to oppress and bring destruction. Words have the power to change the world. Some examples from the 20th Century stand out in my mind: -Ronald Reagan (1987), in West Berlin – “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall.” -Martin Luther King (1963), in Washington D.C. – “I have a dream…” -Winston Churchill (1941), during the depths of War 2 – “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never…”’ Individually, we know the power of words spoken to us, or words spoken about us. In your own life, I’m sure you could testify – quote perhaps – things that people have said to you that have blessed you, encouraged you, and changed you for the good, as well as things people have said to you that hurt you, wounded you, and changed the course of your life because of the evil in their words. When we were kids, we used to say “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” That’s just a lie. It wasn’t true. Words can wound. In fact, the wounds left by words can linger much longer than a bruise: for weeks, years, decades, even a lifetime. Now I agree that we shouldn’t let every negative thing that people say to us, or write about us, wound us. We shouldn’t. But the reality is they often do. The Bible has much to say about the power of words. It tells us that words can revive. They have the power to encourage our souls through gratitude and blessings; to connect us to God through praise and worship; and to build people up through appreciation and grace. Proverbs tell us “A gentle tongue is a tree of life…” (15:4), and “The tongue of the wise brings healing…” (12:18). The Bible tells us that words can wound. Proverbs 12:18 says “Rash words are like sword thrusts…” We all know this by experience. Jean Paul Sartre accurately said “words are like loaded pistols.” Yes, they can be. They certainly can hurt. But most importantly, the Bible teaches us that words reveal. Jesus said in Matthew 15:18: “But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person.” He also noted: For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). In other words, if you have a problem with harsh words or a bitter tongue, the issue does not lie with the mouth only. It is ultimately a heart issue. James said it this way: Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger… Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. Now I’m sure we would all say we need to be quicker to hear, slower to speak, and slower to become angry. But the solution is not primarily about “taming” your tongue -- repressing it when it wants to lash out, or silencing it when it wants to gossip, or biting it when it wants to tear down. Those are certainly commands from scripture. But Jesus and James both teach us our words are merely a product of what’s going on in our souls. That’s why James’ solution is a spiritual one: “Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls” (James 1:21). Think of your words like a thermometer. What does a thermometer do? It measures the temperature inside of us. It is interesting to me that you put the thermometer (at least the old school ones) under your tongue. How appropriate! So let’s take a reading of the temperature of our souls by examining our words. Do your words revive? Or wound? Do you bless and build up, or discourage and tear down? Do your “I love yous” outnumber your “I’m disappointed with yous”? Remember, it is a soul issue. James gave us the key in James 1:21 – repent and receive. Repent of our sin, and receive the Word into our heart – Jesus Christ. When that happens a transformation of the heart occurs (2 Cor. 5:17). And a transformed heart transforms our words. Pastor John Herring First Baptist Church Prosper
“Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger… Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.” 36
