T
he holidays flew by and we are now into yet another new year… it seems like time keeps moving faster and faster! Each January 1st usually brings about some deep reflection over the past year and great hope for the next. We are blessed to have experienced such incredible growth during 2015 and we are honored to welcome all of our new Prosper families and readers…and this is only the beginning!! We will continue to grow at breakneck speed – once someone visits our town, they can’t help but want to stay and be a part of it! The spirit and pride of our community are unmatched – anywhere! We would like to take a moment and recognize our incredible school district, families and children. We are lucky to be a part of a community that employs such caring teachers, staff and administrators. We thank you from the bottoms of our hearts for loving, educating and shaping the lives of our children. It’s been said more than once that children are our future…and there is no better time than a brand new year to acknowledge the impact that our PISD educators have on our precious students. We wish all of our friends, colleagues and readers the Happiest of New Years! May your 2016 be the BEST ever and may all of your resolutions and goals be met. We look forward to another wonderful year with you as we continue to maintain our small town roots as we grow and flourish.

School Board Recognition Month T
From the Desk of: Dr. Drew Watkins Superintendent, Prosper ISD
exas has more than 5 million students in public schools. That is 5 million young minds from about age 5 to 18 years old, and our state and local district are attracting even more. Every year, our student population increases about 85,000 students across the state of Texas, which is not hard to believe given our tremendous growth in Prosper. In Texas, more than 7,200 generous people have offered to help to see that these students get what they need in terms of education. These people receive no monetary incentive for their dedicated efforts. They are people who not only volunteer but go through the process of standing up for public education. They are locally elected school board members. They are your neighbors and they care. These public servants donate their time and talents to ensure that ALL our children have the best public schools we can provide. These people sit through meetings, read detailed reports, listen to parents’ concerns, and are willing to do the hard work to benefit the students and the community at large. Each January, we pause in our regular activities to say thank you to these dedicated volunteers. We sincerely appreciate their generous sharing of time and energy on behalf of our children. It is no easy task guiding one of the fastest growing school districts in the state of Texas. So, when you see a school board member this month, or quite frankly any time, please show your support and gratitude – we are indebted to them.

Town Matters
Happy New Year!
wide recreational facilities. These projects have not been confined just to children, but have included programs and facilities for adults and seniors.
As we look at 2016, we can take the appropriate amount of pride in what was accomplished in 2015. We, indeed, have come a long way. Looking forward, though, we can easily see there’s still lots of ground to cover.
During last year’s Centennial Celebration, for instance, we initiated the Mayor’s 100-mile Challenge, wherein we rewarded people of all ages who walked, jogged, ran, biked, skated, swam or otherwise covered 100 miles within a certain timeframe. Many residents signed up for the challenge and met it, some even exceeded it by a wide margin.
The new year is always filled with a wonderful mix of warm nostalgia for the year just ended and unbridled enthusiasm for what’s in store for the next 12 months. It’s a great time to take stock of how far we’ve come, and how far we have yet to go.
And, while our town will continue its march forward at a healthy pace, I strongly encourage Prosper residents to take a serious look at their own personal health. Taking care of our bodies is an important aspect of our quality of life. There’s a lot of truth in the old saying, “good health and good sense are two of life’s greatest blessings.” And, it makes good sense to make good health a priority. As you might recall, I had some fairly major health issues not too long ago. Thankfully, these issues were taken care of successfully. But, for a while there, we weren’t very sure how things would work out. Even though I’ve been an athlete my whole life and have continued to remain active and maintain my weight, health and wellness concerns simply can’t be ignored. That’s why I’m such a proponent of an active and vigorous lifestyle for everyone. The Town Council, for the most part, has also acknowledged the importance of physical activity by endorsing the creation of parks, trails and open spaces. We have sanctioned improvements to parks that have included more play areas, practice and game fields, hike and bike trails and open parkland. Our development partners have also recognized the importance of parks and trails by either devoting space in their projects for parks and trails or by contributing funds for the development of Town-

I’m pleased to report that we are bringing it back this year. We’re also hoping to work with local restaurants to see if we can come up with healthy alternative food choices. The Recreation staff is putting together the finishing touches on it, so be on the lookout for an announcement soon. Whether you participate in the Mayor’s 100-mile Challenge or conduct your own fitness program, I strongly encourage you and your family to get active, develop a maintenance plan for your target weight, and keep each other motivated. I know the Council and staff will continue to provide outdoor recreational opportunities for everyone. To find out what’s offered, visit the Parks and Recreation portal at www.prosperparksandrec.org.

His patients are his friends, and he likes seeing them in the office and around town. Dr. Chandler believes what makes his practice different from others is that he has a wonderful team of individuals who truly care about their patients, and making the office a warm comfortable environment to have your dental work done. He offers a wide variety of Dental Services at his practice. Everything from cleanings, fillings and root canals; to braces, extractions and dental implants. Whatever your circumstances are, they will be able to meet your needs. For those patients who have anxiety towards treatment, they offer several options to make your visit comfortable, including Nitrous Oxide, Oral and IV Sedation. A happy, well informed patient is the key to a successful Dental Practice. Dr. Chandler believes what sets him apart from others is his philosophy on Dental Care. He lives his life by the Golden Rule of the Bible - Do to others as you would like them to do to you (Luke 6:31). When treating his patients, he pretends he is the one in the chair. How he interacts and treats them is the same way he would want someone to treat him. Rarely does this philosophy not allow him to have a successful outcome, and hence a happy patient. Jill H. Sentlingar, DDS Lara T Cosco DDS, FAGD In 2004 before Prosper had a stoplight and Preston was still a two-lane state highway, Dr. Jill Sentlingar was the first dentist to open a practice in Prosper. In 2006, Dr. Lara Coseo joined her practice to serve the needs of the growing community. Before practicing dentistry together in Prosper, Dr. Jill and Dr. Lara began working together in 2000 when they met on the first day of orientation for dental school. Both knew immediately that they shared a passion for excellence and spent many long days and nights studying together. Their long nights paid off and they celebrated together when they both graduated at the top of their class in 2004. Dr. Jill and Dr. Lara remain committed to advancing their education and staying current with new techniques, equipment and materials. Both doctors participate in international study clubs and each doctor completes, on average, 75 hours of continuing education a year. Dr. Lara completed the requirements to earn the prestigious designation as a Fellow in the Academy in General Dentistry in 2014. She is working diligently to complete the required 1100 hours to earn her Mastership. Working together, Dr. Jill and Dr. Lara have developed a risk-management approach to dentistry that allows for long term planning and less time in the dental chair. Their creative passion for general dentistry allows the doctors to use a unique, comprehensive approach not only for oral health, but the entire head and neck as well. Their approach uses a comprehensive exam combined with 3D imaging. Dr. Jill and Dr. Lara are the only general dentists in Prosper utilizing an in-office iCAT 3D imaging system. 3D imaging enables them to view not only the mouth and teeth, but also the surrounding structures including the sinuses, airway spaces and upper cervical spine. These structures can be seen in a “real-world” view that traditional dental imaging does not provide, allowing the doctors to evaluate other sources of pain that can be affecting the teeth and jaw. These comprehensive techniques benefit both children and adults for their long term dental and oral health. As well as their in-office work, Dr. Jill and Dr. Lara enjoy missionary dentistry. Dr. Brandon Stephans Dr. Stephans is Prosper’s longest serving chiropractor. He’s owned Functional Health Centers, located in downtown Prosper on Broadway, since 2010. Dr. Stephans graduated from Parker College of Chiropractic in 2005. He and his wife, Angie, have two daughters, Sophie (2) and Rylee (7months). At Functional Health Centers, we take a unique approach to healthcare in that we look at the underlying cause of the issue, as opposed to looking at just the symptoms like traditional healthcare. With all the recent changes in healthcare, we started noticing patient care suffering and becoming unaffordable. That’s why last year we decided to make a change in our office. The change: make healthcare more affordable and allow patients to get the care they need. The result: happier and healthier patients.

Remember When
In Remembrance of Jim Hughes Normally this article would be about the history of Prosper but I would like to use this space to remember one of Prosper’s best liked and most generous citizens. Many of you probably did not know Jim, but his life was a big part of Prosper’s history. Jim Hughes was born in Prosper and lived in Prosper after he finished his baseball career. I think you will find his life interesting because he did so much for our town. James Albert Hughes was one of my best friends. We were both born in Prosper in the 1930’s and he became like a brother to me. During all of his life he was known as “Jim”. No one knew James Albert was his real name. The Hughes family were some of the early settlers in the Prosper area. Jim’s grandfather, also known as James Albert Hughes, came to Texas in 1890. He married Mary Elizabeth (Hattie) Blackwell. Out of this marriage came Jim’s father, T.M. Hughes, Sr., who later married Oberia Johnson. Oberia was the daughter of W.A. Johnson, Sr., who was also one of the early settlers in the area. T.M. And Oberia had four children - T.M. Hughes, Jr., Jack Hughes, James Albert “Jim” and Jerry Ann Hughes. The

mothers made our shorts and printed “Prosper” in green on our white tee shirts and we played basketball only in grade school. Today we have organized sports before the children even get to grade school.
family was a very Christian family and very active in civic affairs in Prosper. T.M. Sr., Jim’s father, was a farmer. Jim Hughes was born in Prosper, Texas on October 21, 1934. This was during the depression and most families had to struggle to feed and clothe their families. Jim and I went to grade school and high school together. During the 1930’s and 1940’s there was not much activity for young kids to do. We did not have any money so we could not travel, eat out at a good restaurant, have good clothes or own a bicycle – and a car was out of the question as many adults could not even afford one. While we were in grade school, we kept ourselves busy by playing games on the cotton bales that were stored behind the drug store and Harper’s Grocery store in downtown Prosper. Sometimes we would play card games at different houses, catch pigeons in some of the farmers’ barns, attend school and church functions or walk to Celina just for the fun of it. “Jones Drug Store” in Celina made very good “root beer floats”. We stayed at each other’s homes quite a bit so all of the mothers were “mothers” to all the kids in town. There were no organized sports in grade school while we were growing up. However, Jack Vanbevers, who was our grade school principal, talked some of the other grade schools in the county into playing basketball with each other. Our
As we made it to high school, we started playing softball, baseball and basketball in school as well as getting together for friendly games on the weekends – which were usually played in someone’s cow pasture. If we wanted to use the gym for basketball, we would contact Mr. Sam Wysong, our superintendent, or Ozell Washburn, who was the maintenance man for the school. We could use the gym about anytime we wanted to play. During these years, it did not take us long to figure out who the best athlete was in our group…it was Jim Hughes. He was small for his age and only 5’6” as a junior in high school. But, during his senior year, he grew about 7 inches and continued to grow while he was in college! He was very fast, sure handed, quick on his feet and a very good athlete. Jim was not only a good athlete but he was a kind, gentle and caring person. He never lost his composure or showed his displeasure while playing ball. Jim was a quiet, humble man and you would never know all his accomplishments unless someone else told you. Jim was not the type to talk about himself, but he led a very fulfilling and interesting life. I remember a funny story that happened to him during his senior year of playing football, although it probably wasn’t funny to him at the time. It was a very cold night in 1951 and the wind was blowing hard out of the north. Jim had to punt on fourth down and when he kicked the ball into the north wind, it was blowing so hard the ball went behind the line of scrimmage and he had a net punt of minus 15 yards! After Jim’s last year in high school, we lived together at the Methodist House in Denton and went to school at North Texas State University, which is now the University of North Texas. We played intramural sports and again Jim excelled. After one year at North Texas, Jim received a scholarship for basketball and baseball at Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas where he played both sports. Jim was all-conference in basketball and baseball in 1954 and 1955. He led the Bearkats (Sam Houston’s mascot) in hitting during 1954 and 1955 and was the leading scorer on the 1954 basketball team. He also led the Lone Star Conference in basketball scoring in 1954. In 1991, he was inducted into the Sam Houston Letterman’s Hall of Honor. Jim graduated from Sam Houston state in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He signed his first professional baseball contract with the Detroit Tigers and received a $4,000 bonus. He was sent to the Durham, North Carolina Bulls (a Class B farm team) and stayed through part of 1956. He also played for the Terre Haute, Indiana Tigers (Class B farm team) of the Illinois-Indiana-Iowa league for part of 1956. January 2016
He then entered the U.S. Army from 1957-1958 and was stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska. He returned to baseball in 1959 with the Detroit Tigers and was assigned to the Birmingham, Alabama Barons, which was a Double A team. He played for Birmingham through 1960. During spring training 1961, he was assigned to Denver, Colorado which was a Triple A farm club of the Detroit Tigers. He played for Denver that year and then Detroit traded him to the Boston Red Sox in 1962. He was assigned to the Seattle, Washington Rainiers (Triple A). However, that same year, the Boston Red Sox traded him to the Kansas City Athletics and he was assigned to another Triple A farm clubthe Portland, Oregon Beavers. It is interesting to note that between the two baseball clubs in 1962, Jim hit a .304 batting average for the season, which is a very good average for any league. He stayed in Portland through 1963 and then was transferred to the Dallas, Texas Rangers. Jim played winter ball in Arecibo, Puerto Rico in 1963. He played in Dallas, Texas for one year and then was assigned to the Vancouver, British Columbia Mounties for the next three years. Jim retired from playing baseball in 1967. He was an infielder and played third base, second base and shortstop. Jim liked to play all positions but said he preferred to play third base. He had some good years in Triple A ball. In 1963, he batted .280 as a shortstop for Portland of the Pacific Coast League. He led the league in putouts and double plays in his position, hit 17 home runs and made the all-star team. The year earlier he hit .304 playing with the Seattle Rainiers and the Portland Beavers. He spent most of his playing career in Triple A. He would always go to spring training with the major league club but would be assigned to one of their farm clubs as the season began. At Jim’s funeral, some of the baseball scouts said that if he were playing baseball today he would be in the majors…there were many good players in Triple A ball that could play in the major leagues but there were not enough major league teams at that time. Major league teams have since expanded. When Jim started playing professional baseball in 1955 there were 16 major league teams – today there are 30. That is nearly double so many more players are able to play in the major leagues today than could in the 1950’s. Also, back then, most major league clubs carried only one extra infielder. In today’s game they carry many extra players and the scouts said Jim would be on a major league team in today’s environment. Jim retired from playing baseball in 1967; however, he decided to try his hand at managing a baseball team. In 1968 the Oakland Athletics gave Jim one of their farm clubs to manage, the Burlington, Iowa Bees franchise. Jim only managed one year. He told me one year was enough and his only claim to fame as a manager was that he managed Vida Blue, who became to be one of the best left-handed pitchers in Health & Wellness
baseball. Most of Vida’s time in major league baseball was spent with the Oakland Athletics. Jim loved baseball and did not want to give up being involved with the sport. He decided he would like to scout, although much travel time was involved in this job. He took a job as a scout for the New York Mets and was with them from 1969 to 1980. The New York Mets won the World Series in 1969 and Jim was invited to the World Series games by the Mets. He was hired by the Toronto Blue Jays in 1981 and worked with them until he retired in 2002. He was a hard working scout and while with the Blue Jays, spent most of his time scouting in Texas. He covered Louisiana, New Mexico and Texas while scouting for the New York Mets. Toronto won two World Series titles while Jim was a scout, 1992-1993. He signed the pitcher who got the last out when Toronto secured their first championship in 1992. Due to his scouting abilities, Jim won the 1995 Midwest Scout of the Year award. Baseball scouts spend a lifetime looking for that one player that will “be the apple of a manager’s eye”. Jim found and signed many players who played in the major leagues or later managed in the major leagues. Jim spent 48 years in the sport that he loved. He was well liked and respected by his fellow players and scouts and many attended and were recognized at his funeral. Next month, we’ll see how Jim’s contributions to the Town of Prosper began as his career in baseball ended in 2002. Work It Out: How To Create Work Out Looks That Motivate
What you wear can have a huge impact on your mood, including work out clothes! Here are a few easy tricks to create work out looks that pump you up. Use what you like to wear to create work out looks you love. Are you drawn to color? Texture? Pattern? Shine? Add those elements into your work out gear with a fun pair of shoes, pants in a bold print, a graphic tank or a sparkly headband. Highlight areas you’re proud of and camouflage those you’re working on. Fit is key to highlighting and camouflaging, with the most flattering cuts usually fitting close to the body, but not tight. Create a long, lean line with leggings by choosing a top that drapes well and hits part way down your thigh. This will create a slim silhouette that looks like it flows from your waist all the way down to your toes. Draw attention with bright colors, bold patterns, unique textures and cut outs, and shiny fabrics. Everything else will be camouflaged by default, but if you want to be even more purposeful, stick to darker fabrics, matte textures, small or neutral patterns, and skip the anything with a sheen to it. Try this trick to look like you lost five pounds before you walk in the gym door! Pair a top and bottom in the same color family to elongate your frame and give you height visually. Black or another neutral is a safe bet, but feel free to get creative! In general, the darker pieces will create a leaner silhouette, but the same principles apply no matter what color family you choose. How to wear all one color family: • Be sure the pieces match perfectly or are obviously different hues (like blush and hot pink or aqua paired with royal blue) to keep from looking like you made a mistake. • What about shoes? If you have them in the same color family, go for it! They’ll keep the line going. Don’t have the same color shoe or want a more understated look? Try a neutral shoe. Dressing in pieces you love to wear can make you more motivated to get moving. Use these tricks to look and feel great for your work outs- or borrow them to create every day outfits! Cryotherapy is an exciting new technology that triggers a systemic anti-inflammatory response in the body. Although new to the Prosper and Celina areas, this technology has been utilized for more than 20 years in Europe. Whole Body Cryotherapy was originally developed for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory, autoimmune disease of the joints. While incredibly successful for that issue, it quickly became apparent that there were many other overall health benefits achieved. In fact, it has been discovered that with regular treatments, endorphins are released which help alleviate depression and anxiety, even helping you sleep better. Here’s how it works…the Cryochamber is a singleperson device which envelopes the body but allows the head and neck area to still be exposed at the top. The chamber can reach temperatures as low as 250 degrees below Fahrenheit, so socks and gloves are worn to protect hands and feet. Once in the chamber, January 2016
the temperature is significantly lowered during the first 90 seconds, and the entire therapy sessions lasts only 2-3 minutes. The results are often seen immediately and some even experience an exhilarating feeling after the treatment. This detoxification of the body and systemic response are crucial in eliminating inflammatory issues and the chronic pain that comes with it. Whole Body Cryotherapy is not just for athletes, although it has been known to improve performance for athletes and decreases their recovery time after workouts and is used widely by professional sports teams. In fact, about half of Collin County Cryo’s clients are regular, everyday people who suffer from the normal aches and pains of getting older. Bill and Holly have seen how cryotherapy has improved these clients’ overall health and pain reduction.

What differentiates Collin County Cryo and makes them unique in the Prosper and Celina area is their commitment to their clients’ safety. Not only are the treatments medically supervised, but Holly’s experience as a critical care registered nurse is an added bonus. Her medical background gives her a greater understanding of the client’s medical history and can potentially detect situations where a doctor’s approval is needed before beginning treatment. True to their commitment of improving your overall health and wellness, Collin County Cryo is excited to announce that they are adding some additional services in the very near future. In addition to cryotherapy, they will soon offer some exciting new services: infrared sauna, hydromassage, licensed massage therapy (specializing in lymphatic drainage), Cryofacial therapy and Normatec.

In His Presence
Simplify One of the Pharisees thinking to entrap Jesus asked him, “Master, which is the great commandment in the law?”Matt 22:36 Now the reason this was such a tricky question was because of the complexity surrounding Jewish law. Picking the “great commandment” out of the plethora of commandments would surely lead to dilemmas and contradictions. However, the response given by Jesus was not only the best answer that could have been given, but it was also beautiful in its simplicity. Matthew 22:37-40 V37: Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. V38: This is the first and great commandment. V39: And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. V40: On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. The life and teachings of Jesus are replete with beautiful simplicity. His life was not surrounded by time-consuming “things”, but rather with people-focused service. His sermons were not long orations—they were short and simple parables. Even his miracles were typically quiet, singular and performed not with complex rites, but rather with a simple touch or word. Our world today has exponentially increased in complexity—but only if we let it. The things necessary for life—food, shelter, clothing—haven’t changed much over the centuries, at least the essential versions of them. Hardly a single soul goes hungry in the U.S. and we fill ourselves with delicacies, fresh fruits in the middle of winter, and other specialties that a king would have considered a banquet a few centuries ago. The average home in the U.S. with its indoor plumbing, central air and heat, electric lighting, spacious rooms, refrigerators, freezers, microwaves, washers, dryers, televisions, and communications would be considered palatial and luxurious by standards of 150 years ago. And the clothes—instead of wearing them out, we fill our closets with shoes, coats, dresses, suits and other trappings that would have outfitted a small village not long ago. But this is not all, we’ve taken the term “toys” to a whole new level. We’ve graduated from the childish simple toys of yesterday to the adult toys of today. We drive them, fly them, listen to them, play them, communicate with them, boat in them, golf them, watch them, pay for them, care for them, spend hours with them. Two hundred years ago we didn’t do any of these—we were spending most of our time putting food on the table, providing shelter and clothing for our families. In this new year upon us, let us resolve to “live within our needs” (not our means) by simplifying our lives as Jesus taught. The two great commandments haven’t changed. It is far better to love the Lord and our neighbor than it is to spend the money and the time on our toys and the non-essential essentials of life. Why live in a mansion when a modest home will do? Why always eat out when a simple meal at home is much less expensive and a family oriented affair? The time we save is so much better spent on our family and our neighbor. After all, simply serving our neighbor is truly serving God. Richard B.
