Voted 2013 New Business of The Year Published by Cedarbrook Media Group, LLC Editorial/Marketing Director Heather Reynolds Heather@CedarbrookMedia.com
November - Family. Football. Blessings. There are so many great things about this time of year, it’s hard to even know where to begin. First of all, we’d like to give a shout out to our Prosper Eagle football team taking the Division championship for the first time since 2008! We’ve made the playoffs again this year and we look forward to watching these boys give it everything they have for their school, their town, their coaches and for each other. We are also excited to announce that our volleyball team finished up their regular season not only with a district championship, but an UNDEFEATED district championship! We can’t wait to watch these girls power through the next few weeks of playoffs! And while we are watching our student athletes excel through November in their respective sports, it’s also a great month to get involved in the community. There are a lot of great things happening in Prosper and many ways that you can give back. From November 7th – 11th, Prosper ISD is hosting its annual STUFF THE BUS event. Help PISD help others by donating various items to be delivered to Bethlehem Place & Grace Food Pantry. Students can bring their donations to their campus during the week of November 7th – items requested are canned fruit, canned corn, pasta & pasta sauce, hygiene items, diapers, pinto beans, long grain rice, canned tuna and canned chicken. You can also get involved with the Cornerstone Christmas Toy Drive & Coat Drive. New coats for children and gently used coats for parents can be dropped off at the Prosper Fire Department or The Body Shop Collision Repair in Prosper. Lynn A. Gross, CPA is hosting a Toy Drive on December 2nd and 3rd from 4:00-7:00pm...drop by for a visit with Santa and donate a toy or $25 for Cornerstone Christmas! We urge you to spend some time giving back to the community and cherishing every moment you can with your family. These are the things that have true meaning – family, grace and thankfulness. We live in a tremendously giving community and our children are truly lucky to watch the examples we set in Prosper. As you gather together this year on Thanksgiving, take some time to reflect on the blessings in our community and in your home. We wish you all a very blessed Thanksgiving season!

New Offerings Bring Renewed Excitement About Learning • Create a safe introduction to golf for today’s students. Transforming education and bringing new innovative programs to students is a top priority in Prosper ISD. We are always looking to expand on our Advanced Placement and Dual Credit offerings along with other learning opportunities that align with the Prosper ISD Graduate Profile. This year Prosper ISD is offering several new programs to students that reach beyond the traditional design of school. Prosper High School is offering, through a partnership with Le Tourneau University, a Dual Credit Aviation course to students. The course begins with an introductory course of Flight Science and then progresses to foundational concepts of aviation studies. The courses are offered beginning in the 11th grade and students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher to enroll in the course. Successful completion of the aviation courses leads to flight training courses. Through the course students can earn private pilot certificates, tail wind endorsements, instrument ratings, commercial single engine certificates, and multiengine certificates. In fact, one of our students was able to perform a fly over at the recent homecoming football game and tapped into the stadium PA system announcing, “WE ARE PROSPER!” These Eagles are “literally” getting their wings! Another addition is that all seven Prosper ISD elementary campuses are offering golf curriculum to students in grades K-5. Each student will have the opportunity to learn more about the game of golf throughout the school year during units of study. The golf curriculum in Prosper ISD will provide students with the following:
10
WeAreProsper.com | November 2016
• Ensure that golf education meets the same national standards developed by the Society for Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE). • Help students build character and confidence through the positive personal and social values associated with the game. • Show students that golf can be a great part of a healthy and active lifestyle. • Make the positive values of golf a part of the classroom and students’ everyday lives. And finally, last year we were able to introduce our first ever Orchestra at Reynolds Middle School and Prosper High School. As we continue to build the Orchestra program we have extended these opportunities at the elementary level in a program called Suzuki Strings. The Suzuki method was developed in Japan by Shinichi Suzuki. Children participating in the Suzuki Strings are immersed in the sounds of their instrument, listening to recordings daily. Their parent is always beside them as a coach and cheerleader, supporting and helping their child learn at home. This method of teaching strings has been used around the world. The official website of the Suzuki Association of Americans (www.suzukiassociation.org/) contains more information about Dr. Suzuki and his philosophy. We are extremely fortunate to offer this program in Prosper ISD given that very few schools across the state of Texas have such a program. We are constantly looking at new and different ways to challenge our students and inspire their learning. If you ever have any questions about these or any other programs in PISD, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s school for additional information.

N
ovember is the month when we as Americans pause to give thanks for the many blessings we enjoy. The national day of giving thanks is, of course, Thanksgiving Day, celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Every elementary school student will tell you that the holiday originated as a harvest festival, when Pilgrims decided to have a feast and offer thanks to God for a fruitful crop. In fact, the event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in 1621. This feast lasted three days, and as told by attendee Edward Winslow, it was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. The New England colonists were already accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings" which were days of prayer, thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, after a proclamation by George Washington. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens," to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. Every year, families gather at the table and share a large meal, often including stuffed turkey, mashed potatoes, vegetables, yams, and a wide variety of pies and other desserts. I know many families in Prosper, including my own, partake in this tradition in their homes every year.
12
WeAreProsper.com | November 2016
Once around the table, families will almost always begin the Thanksgiving meal with a prayer, and often, they’ll go around the room, asking attendees to express their own personal reasons for being thankful. For me, it’s always easy. First and foremost, I’m thankful that Jesus died on the cross to save me. I’m also eternally grateful for my beautiful wife, my kids and grandkids. I never fail to be thankful for the parents I was blessed with, and for the many other people in my life who have made my life better and more fulfilling. I’m always reminded of the pastors who have helped me on my spiritual journey, the incredible coaches who took time to shape my outlook on life, and the wonderful teachers who showed a tremendous level of tolerance with someone who probably tried their patience on quite a few occasions. I’m thankful for the unbelievable friends that God has put in my life, and for the many people who have proven to be tremendous role models. In a special way, I am thankful for my health. Anyone who has gone through serious health issues as I have will know how terribly important it is to never take good health for granted. And, finally, I am thankful for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to serve in the greatest community in Collin/Denton County. As you gather with family and friends this Thanksgiving, what blessings will you be thankful for?

2016 Prosper Christmas Festival Celebration “SALUTING THOSE WHO SERVE”
C
hristmas is coming and that means excitement is building for the Prosper Christmas Festival! This warm tradition has been part of Prosper’s heritage for nearly ten years. Come celebrate the season with family and neighbors! You’ll find food, fun and entertainment for all on Saturday, December 3, from 3-6pm, in downtown Prosper.
to take a moment to honor, remember and thank the patriots who work to save and enrich the lives of others. We acknowledge those active duty, former and retired military, first responders, police officers, firefighters, clergy, community liaisons and volunteers who selflessly serve others throughout the year.
Numerous attractions are planned for the event, including rides, trackless train, balloon artist, petting zoo, photo opportunities, inflatable obstacle course and slide, toddler bounce and spin art, along with a variety of vendors and food options. Of course, Santa Claus will be in town! The Community Stage will be the location for performances by local youth, musical acts, choirs and dancers. About 6pm, the festival will culminate with the Community Christmas Tree lighting and glittering fireworks display.
Preceding the festival, the Rotary/Lions Clubs parade begins at Rucker Elementary School at 2:30pm and then winds down Broadway Street to downtown Prosper. Parade entry fees benefit the Prosper Police Department’s “Cops with a Claus” program, now in its 16th year, helping those in need during the holiday season. Parade entrants are encouraged to decorate in the Christmas spirit, along with “Saluting Those Who Serve.” Register for the parade before November 21 to avoid the late entry fee.
Along with this traditional festival fare, the 2016 festival will have special meaning. We’ll be “Saluting Those Who Serve,” encouraging festival goers

In His Presence
It’s a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord.
There is a slight crispness in the air these days and I see mums starting to bloom on front porches. Homecoming Kings and Queens are being crowned and pumpkins are appearing at the entrances of the grocery stores. Autumn is here and it’s the time of year that the gateway to the holidays opens as we begin to focus towards thanksgiving. We all have things to be thankful for. Even in the midst of economic downturns and political chaos we can still find much to be grateful about. The question comes to us often in this season. Teachers will be pinning colorful lists on bulletin boards revealing the answers to “What are you thankful for?” Family and friends usually top the chart as to what we feel most grateful for. But I’d like for you to consider this… Being grateful and giving thanks are not the same thing. Gratitude is something we feel. Thanksgiving is something we do. It is important for the gratitude in our hearts to be transformed into words that are verbalized and heard. Remember, by presidential proclamation the day is set aside not for “gratefulfeeling” but for “thanks-giving”. For any sort of thanksgiving to happen there are at least two requirements: something to be thankful for and someone to be thankful to. Gratitude blossoms into thanksgiving only as it gets expressed. Who should you be thankful to? Parents? Teachers? The list is endless. But first and foremost it’s time we should vocalize our gratitude to God. The Bible says, “It’s a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord.” It is a wonderful thing when our gratitude finds a voice and is directed heavenward to the source of all blessing. A great example of this is found in 2 Corinthians when we see the Apostle Paul exploding in gratitude for the grace that comes in the gospel of Jesus. “Thanks be to God for His inexpressible gift!” It would be a “good thing” for all of us to take a few moments to call to mind all the things we are grateful for. It would be a “better thing” for us to make the call or say the prayer and vocalize thanksgiving to whom it’s due. In Good Taste
While the turkey typically receives all the attention at holiday gatherings, rounding out your meal with the perfect snacks, sides and desserts is the key to a successful feast. Start your guests off with NYC-Style Pita Chips with Herbed Ricotta and Arugula to keep big appetites at bay then serve Slow Cooker Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows alongside the main course as the ideal complement to any meat. Finally, top off an evening of delicious food with Caramel Macchiato Ice Cream Pie to send everybody home happy. One Terrific Turkey Centering your holiday meal around a turkey cooked to golden perfection is the ideal way to serve a feast. Without the right preparation and execution, however, your bird could fall short. To ensure your holiday dinner centerpiece lives up to expectations, follow these simple tips, from purchase to plate: 1. Buy the right bird. Finding a turkey that’s just the right size for your expected party is the start to a successful gathering. One common rule of thumb is to buy 1 pound of turkey per person – so for a 10-person meal, purchase a 10-pound turkey. Don’t forget that nearly everyone loves leftovers, so you may consider buying a few pounds more than necessary. 2. Be patient. If you opt for a frozen turkey, don’t rush the thawing process. For larger turkeys, it can take days to defrost properly.
18
WeAreProsper.com | November 2016
3. Timing is everything. Finding the right amount of time for your turkey to spend in the oven is crucial but not always the easiest thing to do. For an 8-12-pound bird, aim for 2.5-3.5 hours; 12-16 pounds for 3.5-4 hours; 16-20 pounds for 4-4.5 hours, and so on. The key is bringing the turkey to a temperature reading of 170 F. 4. Let it rest. Instead of pulling the turkey out of the oven and immediately carving it, give it a chance to rest for 20-30 minutes, which allows the juices to soak into the meat and moisten it up. Take It Slow This holiday season, use your slow cooker to save time and oven space without sacrificing flavor. Try this recipe for Slow Cooker Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Marshmallows and find more seasonal recipes at McCormick.com.
Cool, Creamy Nightcap There’s only one way to properly end a holiday celebration: dessert. Send your guests home happy with one final course, a Caramel Macchiato Ice Cream Pie, to fill the remaining space in everyone’s bellies. Find more dessert ideas at nestleusa.com/nestle-kitchens.

First Annual Give Thanks Prosper
We are blessed to live in a great community. We have one of the best school systems in the state. We have an amazing city support system and loving, caring citizens who volunteer long hours for countless worthy causes. We have strong churches that are filled each Sunday with gracious, giving people. We work and worship freely in liberty that came at a high price. We have a lot to be thankful for. That’s why we’re coming together to host the first annual #givethanksprosper event. While churches vary in beliefs and practices, thanksgiving is held in common among us all. The churches of our area are gathering together to express our gratitude on Sunday evening, November 13th at 6:30pm at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship. Also, we’re asking everyone to bring at least one canned good to be donated to our local benevolence ministries. Everyone is welcome. Remember When
JAMES L. ROBINSON My great-grandfather We have been talking in the past few months about early Prosper and the hardships our families faced as they moved from the Eastern United States to Texas and Collin County. One of them was my great grandfather, James L. Robinson. He led a very interesting life and I’d like to share his history and his journey as he moved from Tennessee to Collin County in 1890. James L. Robinson was born in DeKalb County, Tennessee on November 4, 1834 to parents Jonas and Fannie Robinson and he was one of six children. They lived in a very rural area on a creek called Long Branch. It was in the Appalachian Mountains north of Smithville, Tennessee. The nearest town was Temperance Hall, which was located approximately half way between Liberty and Lancaster on Route 264. I think most of Temperance Hall was taken by the water when they built the dam and the highway has now changed to number 60. This area is about 70 miles east of Nashville, Tennessee on Interstate 40. The only way to their house on Long Branch was a place called Thompson’s Bluff and was just enough room on the mountain for a horse/mule to travel. It was eventually enlarged for a wagon to pass and cars in the 1940’s. I was fortunate enough to visit the Old Robinson Home place on Long Branch in 1950. That was 66 years ago - I was a kid and I had never crossed so many creeks and places that I didn’t think our car would get through. There was only enough room for one car, because during that time in the hills of Tennessee, there were very few with a car. All their travel was done by walking, wagon, horse or mule. We travelled about 20 miles on this dirt/gravel road and there no bridges when we crossed over water. Not once did we ever meet another car coming or going!

About half way between Temperance Hall and the Robinson homestead was an old country store. It was very old and had all kinds of homemade farming tools…washtubs hanging from the ceiling, wooden floors, no electricity, hoes, rakes, shoes, women’s dresses, men’s overalls, canned goods, feed, socks and about anything you would need to survive and farm in the hills of Tennessee. Also, there were some “moonshiners” along the way but we did not bother them and hoped they would not bother us. It had to be very unusual for a car to be driving up this road and I don’t think a car had ever traveled that road. I was glad we visited because we got to see how the people in the hills of Tennessee lived. Of course my great grandfather, James L. Robinson, had already moved to Collin County with some of his children. He died on April 9, 1924 at 90 years of age. Some other families had purchased the old home place in Tennessee after they moved to Texas. We visited with them and told them who we were and why we were there to visit. Another reason that we wanted to visit the home place was that the Corp. of Engineers were going to build a large Dam and all the land of Long Branch would be under water. The Dam was built in the 1950’s and the home place is now completely under water. The Dam and lake are located just south of I-40 and just Southwest of Cookville, Tenessee, about 20-25 miles. It is called the Center Hill Lake. This lake is 64 miles in length. James L. Robinson married Frances Maxwell on May 13, 1858 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. They had 10 children and were farmers in Long Branch, Tennessee. The fourth child of James and Frances was named John Elbert Robinson, who became by grandfather. He was born July 5, 1867 in DeKalb County, Tennessee. Frances Maxwell Robinson died just after her 10th child was born in 1884. Two years later James L. Robinson married again to Emily Sandlin. They had five children so in total there were 15 children. James served in the Union Army. Although he was from Tennessee he joined the 5th Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry which was Union. He entered in June 1863 and was discharged in August 1865 and I have a copy of his discharge papers.

John Elbert, who was my grandfather, was about 20 years old and could not get along with his step mother so he left Tennessee and came to Texas in 1888 to settle in Rock Hill, which was a community just south of the current town of Prosper. It was located at the intersection of Rock Hill Road and Preston Road. In Rock Hill he met the Naugles who were one of the first settlers in the Rock Hill area. John Elbert ended up marrying Zora Ann Naugle and that is the lineage of my ancestors from my maternal side. John Elbert and Zora Ann Naugle had my mother, Leta Belle Robison and she married my father, Chester Gordon Hays. James L. moved his family to Texas around 1890 and the family settled in the Rock Hill, Richland, Celina, Rhea’s Mill and Frisco areas. At this time Prosper had not yet been founded. In addition to his 15 children, he had 69 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. He farmed this area and in 1922 he was the oldest person living in Frisco. There are many of his descendents still living in this area. Charles “Sonnyboy” Robinson died a couple of years ago and his children, Henry, Winifred, James and Myra Sue are living in the area. Wayne VanBevers is also a descendent of James Robinson. Karie Hays Dalton is a lineage of James L. Robinson as well as Kelli Hays Downs. All of my grandchildren are descendents of James L. Robinson. His lineage is going strong throughout the North Texas area.

Home & Garden
The onset and arrival of colder temperatures means that it’s time once again to brace yourself – and your home – for everything that winter weather threatens to throw at you. From cool, drafty air wafting into your house to friends and family bringing snow and sand inside with them, it’s important to remember the preparation to go through before winter strikes. In order to help keep your home warm, cozy and clean throughout the winter months, follow these seven tips to get started:
Check the Roof With warm days dwindling, it’s never too early to look over your roof for damaged shingles or other various problems. Because winter brings along cold weather and plenty of precipitation, cracks in the roof can cause major issues down the road. If heights and ladders aren’t your thing, try using binoculars from ground level to check things out.
Clean the Gutters After the trees shake loose of their leaves throughout the fall, it’s always imperative to keep the gutters clean of debris. If your gutters fill up with leaves and other junk, the runoff from rain and snow has nowhere to go except in unwanted crevices in your roof. Seal Leaks Around Windows and Doors Caulk is a cheap, simple solution to one of winter’s most annoying little habits – sending cold drafts into your house. Look closely as you check around windows and doors for small cracks then carefully seal up the problem.
Install Door Sweeps Another way to keep warm air in and cool air out is to use door sweeps on the bottom of all exterior doors. A door sweep is a simple device that can be attached to the door frame to help seal the space between the bottom of the door and the floor.

Reverse Ceiling Fans While some ceiling fans require flipping blades, most new fans simply have a reverse feature to make the blades spin clockwise. This easy fix can help pull room air upward and cause warm air – which has risen to the ceiling – to be forced back downward.
Keep Out Sand and Snow Rather than sweeping and vacuuming your entryway every evening, place rugs and storage bins close to your front door, garage and any other entrance to the home so that you and your guests don’t track sand and snow into the house when inclement weather hits.
Stock Up on Winter Gear Unfortunately, it’s impossible to know exactly what each winter will bring. Rather than trying to fight the elements on a snowy day to find salt for your sidewalk or a new shovel to clear the driveway, stock up on these items and other winter essentials long before Mother Nature strikes.
Winter can be a pain, especially for homeowners, but staying on top of your preparation and being ready for cold weather’s reach can help make snow season easier to handle. For more tips to get your home ready for winter, visit elivingtoday.com.
Simple Steps to Maintain Natural Stone Natural stone adds elegance and style to any home. With a nearly endless array of colors, textures and designs, it’s easy to create a one-of-a-kind look for your kitchen or bath. However, without proper care, that carefully selected natural stone may quickly start to show wear and tear. Not only does natural stone lend a beautifully sophisticated aesthetic, it’s generally regarded as a practical choice because it’s more durable than many other materials. However, granite, marble, travertine and other natural-stone and quartz surfaces do require proper care and attention to maintain that luxurious finish. Keep your natural stone in top condition with these tips from the experts at Granite Gold. Clean often. Even if your surface appears clean, the safest bet is to clean it after every meal preparation. The most miniscule particle could have a detrimental effect on your natural stone. Avoid common cleaners and abrasives. They can break down the protective seal and you could be faced with costly repair or replacement. Also, give special attention to the scrubbing pad you use; many are too abrasive for expensive stone counters and leave unsightly scratches.

Polish regularly. Polishing stone provides two great benefits. First, polishing after cleaning will bring out the stone’s natural beauty. Second, it will reinforce the protective seal and provide ongoing protection against water spots and fingerprints. One time-saving but effective solution after sealing is Granite Gold Clean & Shine, which provides the cleaning power of the line’s Daily Cleaner and the luster from the Polish in one easy-to-use formula. You can find the products nationwide at Walmart, Lowe’s, Home Depot and Bed Bath & Beyond; check the product locator at GraniteGold.com.

Seal frequently. Frequently sealing granite countertops and all other natural stone surfaces maintains maximum surface protection, penetrating stone surfaces to provide superior, long-lasting resistance to staining, etching and soil buildup. If you’re not sure whether it’s time to reseal, it’s easy to test. Pour water (about 3 inches in diameter) on the surface and let it sit for 30 minutes. Be sure to do this in several locations, since the integrity of the seal could vary from one area to another. If the water beads, then the stone remains sealed. However, if the stone is penetrated – signified by a dark mark or ring created by the water – it is time to reseal.
