G

enerally, when I sit down to write our column each month, I try to think about upcoming events and things that are happening during the coming month…events that are happening with our students, our schools, our residents and our beloved town. I use these thoughts as my inspiration and let it go from there. But this month is a bit different. This month, my thoughts are much more centered on how quickly life can change. I can’t help but marvel at the frailty of life and how one instant can transform any sense of normalcy. Our family had a scare this past month, and it left me with a completely different outlook on life. We were very lucky, had an amazing surgery team and things turned out okay; but none the less, I am a different person. I have always loved our children with every ounce of me. They have always been the greatest blessings I’ve ever been entrusted with. But I think today I am more acutely aware of exactly how blessed I am. And the things that seemed like such a big deal before – well, most seem downright silly now. There are a handful of things that are truly important in life – God, family and friends are at the top of the list. Everything else is just filler – what you have to sift through to get to the really good stuff. I have to admit, I used to get caught up in the filler…and more often than not, it became my focus. What I have learned through this is that what really matters are the things that make our hearts happy. Sure, I know that I will most likely start to get caught up in the filler again at some point…but I recognize now that those moments are fleeting and the real prize are those hearts and souls who I’ve been fortunate enough to love. We’ve said a million times over how lucky we are to have landed in Prosper, Texas. One of the greatest parts about our town is the way everyone steps up to help when a friend or a neighbor is in need. It’s one of the reasons that Prosper will continue to feel like a small town, no matter how many people move here! Sometimes it’s the smallest of things that make all of the difference when someone is in need. It doesn’t always have to be a huge display of giving…something as simple as a phone call, text, visit, meal or even something as meaningful as prayer…those things can make all the difference. We are fortunate that our children get to grow up in a community that embraces that thinking – the world needs more of that! We’d like to take a moment to thank each and every one of our friends and family who stepped in to help us…your calls, texts, visits and prayers meant the world to us. From the very bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU! We cannot tell you how much we appreciate each and every one of you. You helped us through one of the scariest times in our lives and we will never forget that. Please take a moment to tell the people close to you that you love them and tell our first responders how much you appreciate them for keeping us protected and safe. Every life means everything to someone. WE ARE PROSPER, WE ARE ONE!

ur fifth annual Prosper Community Picnic is set for Saturday, Sept. 10 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Frontier Park, and, like every year, the members of the Council and I will be serving hot dogs to attendees. It’s a tremendous event we look forward to every year, because it provides us another opportunity to talk to residents, hear their concerns and develop deeper relationships. It’s also a time that we on Council can demonstrate, in a very real way, what we believe in – Servant Leadership. I believe that every one of our Council members is sincere in his commitment to that principle. As you know, we do not get any financial compensation for our work on Council. The time, effort and sacrifices to serve on Council are all provided at no cost to the Town. Ours is not a Council that leads to lucrative business deals or higher political office or any of the other perks one might see in larger cities and towns. We serve because we are passionate about our Town, and we want to see it grow and prosper in such a way that will make everyone proud to be associated with it. That’s why we say we are Servant Leaders. We are entrusted with demonstrating leadership not to serve ourselves, but to serve others. And, working the serving line at the annual picnic is symbolic of that commitment. When residents see us on the serving line, it should serve as a reminder that we are committed to making sure that every Prosper resident knows how important they are to us. I hope we have the same large turnout for this year’s picnic that we have enjoyed over the last five years. In addition to meeting with Council

10

WeAreProsper.com | September 2016

members, residents have an opportunity to meet with Police Chief Doug Kowalski and some of his officers, as well as Fire Chief Ronnie Tucker and members of his staff. Town Manager Harlan Jefferson, who usually helps serve hot dogs, will have some of his staff there also. I encourage residents to feel free to approach these folks, introduce yourselves and share your thoughts, whether positive or negative. Based on the high quality of work our staff does, though, I’m convinced that the conversations will be very positive. The picnic will also offer us two opportunities to help our fellow residents. The “Hunger is No Picnic” effort will once again use the annual picnic as an opportunity to fill the shelves of the food pantry at Bethlehem Place. Schools will be competing against each other to see which student body can encourage the most donations. A traveling trophy and other great prizes await the winning school. Before you come out to the picnic, be sure to pack a few canned goods and some non-perishable foods to donate. You can choose which school collection basket gets your donations, or you might bring enough to give something to each one of the schools. Also, the folks at Cornerstone Assistance are holding a sock drive during the picnic. They’re accepting new socks in any sizes for their Christmas giving program. Stores like Walmart, Target, Kohl’s and many others sell socks in packages, so your donation can provide socks for quite a few kids. As every year, I look forward to seeing as many people as possible at the picnic. Our thanks to the churches and organizations who donate the food and set up the games. We appreciate your help very much.

Unique, Comprehensive Dental Care for the Families of Prosper Since 2004

September Spotlight

12

I

n August of 2004, when Prosper was a one-stoplight town and Preston was a two lane Texas highway, Dr. Jill Sentlingar opened Prosper’s first dental practice, Prosper Family Dentistry. She opened Prosper Family Dentistry with a desire to develop a family dental practice focused on comprehensive oral health care founded on building relationships in the dental chair and in the community. In 2006, Dr. Lara Coseo joined the practice to serve the needs of the growing community. With the addition of Dr. Cara Kessler in August 2016, Prosper Family Dentistry is now prepared to grow with the town’s booming population well in to

the future. The Prosper Family Dentistry team has over 120 years of combined experience and they are committed to quality care where the patient comes first. They strive each day to increase the value of their services by incorporating the latest technological advances while still adhering to well founded and time proven principles. The doctors are committed to advancing their education and staying current with new techniques, equipment and materials. They participate in international study clubs and complete 100+ hours of continuing education a year.

Prosper Family Dentistry is committed to advanced training and is pleased to provide the following services in addition to traditional general dentistry: • 3D imaging • Laser Dentistry • Implant Placement and Restoration • Cosmetic Fillings and Crowns • Artistic Composite Veneers • Porcelain Veneers • Bite Balancing and Rebuilding • Invisalign Orthodontics • TMJ Therapy and Stabilization • Sleep Apnea Screening and Treatment

Prosper’s Hometown Dentist Since 2004

All three doctors graduated at the top of their class and were elected to the prestigious Odontological Dental Honors Society. Dr. Lara was awarded a fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry in 2014. Dr. Cara completed a Master’s degree prior to her doctoral degree with a focus on the TMJ. Dr. Jill and Dr. Lara have both participated in multiple local and international mission events to bring dentistry to the underserved. Dr. Jill, Dr. Lara and Dr. Cara all take pride in the relationships they have with their patients and team members. If you are looking for a dental home where you are treated like family, where you will be greeted by name and where you will always know who you’ll see and what to expect, they would be honored to care for you! Prosper Family Dentistry is thrilled to be voted Best Family and Cosmetic Dentist for the 380 region two years in a row and would like to thank their patients for their continued support!!

What Makes Us Unique: • Relationships with our patients are more than surface level. You will find that everyone at Prosper Family Dentistry genuinely cares about your individual needs and desires to make you comfortable in -the dental chair. You will be greeted by name and treated like a member or our family. • Comprehensive care is at the core of our beliefs. We don’t believe in just putting a band-aid on a problem. We want you to have a healthy smile for a life-time. We utilize a thorough exam, 3D imaging and photographs to develop a plan to meet your needs and address the root of any problem areas that are present. • We don’t believe in high pressure dentistry. We are members of the service industry, not the sales industry. We work each day to serve you. At Prosper Family Dentistry, we believe our job is to educate you and help you develop a path to health. For some patients that takes two visits over 1 week, for other patients, it may take 15 visits over a few years. As long as we can take a step forward towards health, we are making progress! • Don’t just take our word for it! Read our reviews at ProsperFamilyDentistry.com

Eagles Nest

Staying informed in Prosper ISD By Dr. Drew Watkins

The school year is underway and PISD stands at 9,987 students! This is an increase of approximately 1,500 students over what we ended school with last year. As many of you know, Prosper ISD opened two new schools this year (Windsong Ranch Elementary and Jim and Betty Hughes Elementary) currently bringing the total to seven elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school. Our challenge remains to be the ability to sell bonds and staff schools rapidly enough to accommodate the student growth.

14

Most of PISD is still undeveloped so the majority of our growth is ahead of us projecting almost 50,000 students at build out. Moving forward it will be imperative that our community plays an active role in defending our interest at the legislative level in Austin. We plan to reactivate the PISD Parent Legislative Action Team as we prepare for the next legislative session to better ensure that Prosper ISD families are not on the receiving end of any negative school legislation.

WeAreProsper.com | September 2016

With so much happening you might be wondering how you can best stay informed about the happenings around Prosper ISD. Our best advice is for you to go to our district website and subscribe (free) to the various campus, organizational, and district newsletters that best pertain to your family. For everyone, we recommend that you subscribe to the weekly newsletter – The Eagle Express. Regardless of the age of your children or even if you no longer have children in school, the Express will update you on all

things PISD every Friday. Prosper ISD is also active in the world of social media. We encourage you to follow campuses and/or the district on Facebook and Twitter. Additionally, PISD has a district App available to serve as a quick reference as well. We also update the district FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) document at least quarterly and is available on the district website. And finally, if you cannot easily find the information you are looking for, simply go to the district website and click on “Eagle Chat”. This will allow you

to submit a question and it will be directed to the appropriate department and you should receive a response within 24 hours. And, be sure to tune in to the PISD 2-Minute Drill every Wednesday for the latest news! With everything going on it is very important that you stay informed – we never want you “out of the loop”. September is a very busy month as students and families get back into “school mode”. As always, thank you all for understanding the challenges we are facing. We enjoy working hard on behalf of your families so that our students are served by the best teachers and staff in the state! WE ARE PROSPER!

We Will Never Forget

15th Anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks Please join in the Prosper 9/11 Memorial on Sunday, September 11th at 7:30am. This year’s memorial will be held at Town Hall, 121 W. Broadway, in Downtown Prosper. Guest speakers Prosper Fire Chief Ronnie Tucker and Prosper Police Chief Doug Kowalski will be honoring our First Responders. It will be a morning of remembrance as we pay tribute to those we lost on that fateful day 15 years ago. The mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters…all of those innocent people who did nothing more than simply go to work that morning. And when tragedy struck – once, twice, three times, four times…as thousands of innocent people fled from impending disaster – there were hundreds of heroes that ran towards it. For those men and women, America thanks you for your bravery and your service. We must never forget that day or those lives that were taken. And we must never forget how strong we stood as a nation…on this 15th anniversary and every one that follows.

Palio’s Pizza Café of Prosper A spicy and noteworthy pie called The Scorcher, with a zippy red sauce, roasted chicken, jalapenos, corn, onions, cheese and a touch of lime. The Chocolate Cannoli has a creamy, rich filling dotted with chocolate chips and the crispy, chocolate-covered shell collide for a sweet treat that will keep you coming back for more.

JC’s Burger House of Prosper

The Patty Melt is always cooked fresh to order, and their version is served on crisp Texas Toast with American cheese, grilled peppers and onion and their signature burger patty. Order yours with a side of their seriously addictive homemade Ranch dressing.

Chefs on Scene The brisket is moist, smoky and forktender and the catfish is flaky and buttery, pairing well with the zippy dipping sauce served alongside it. Not to be missed, they are cranking out some mean ribs at COS – perfectly seasoned and juicy to the bite.

Mesa’s Mexican Grill Select your choice of chicken or beef fajita meat for the Grilled Jalapeno Fajitas, served on top of the most amazing cheesy cilantro sauce you’ve ever tasted. The fajitas are then covered with grilled or fried onions and served with rice, guacamole and pico de gallo. The real star of the meal is the Sizzling Apple Pie. Served on a hot skillet with a creamy butter sauce and topped with vanilla bean ice cream, we dare you not to eat every bite!

In Good Taste

Finding time to celebrate family moments is always sweeter with a delicious ice cream dessert. Breyers partnered with celebrity chef Curtis Stone and his wife, actress Lindsay Price Stone, to celebrate its 150th birthday. The couple created 12 delicious ice cream recipes inspired by each month of the year using Breyers Natural Vanilla ice cream. From January’s recipe featuring Fortune Cookies and Natural Vanilla Ice Cream with Mandarins and Oranges to December’s Spicy Hot Chocolate Floats, families have desserts to celebrate everyday moments all year long. “Beyond a great taste, Breyers Natural Vanilla offers families peace of mind with its simple ingredients like sustainably farmed vanilla beans,” Curtis Stone said. “Also, it’s made with milk and cream from cows not treated with artificial growth hormones*.” Start making the most of family time by visiting Breyers. com for more recipes and join in on the birthday celebration. *Suppliers of other ingredients such as cookies and sauces may not be able to make this pledge. The FDA states that no significant difference has been shown between dairy derived from rBST-treated and non-rBSTtreated cows. Find more information about the Breyers pledge at Breyers.com.

Remember When

Early Times in the Prosper Area – Part 3

Last month we discussed how the early settlers learned and lived with the Native American tribes in our area. We also found out how cumbersome and difficult it was to establish their homesteads and build houses…but in good neighborly fashion families helped one another out and helped to build the community that we all know as Prosper. This month, we are going to learn about how homes were furnished, how meals were prepared and the daily life of these courageous settlers.

Most of the houses had dirt floors, although there were some that had wood floors. All furniture was homemade. Beds, chair, tables, stools, shelves… they were all made by hand. The bed was made by punching holes in each side and placing leather straps crisscrossing from one side to the other and tightened to hold the straw mattress. This mattress was called a “Bed Tick”. There was a stone fireplace at one end of the house. This was used as both a cook stove and also for warming the house in the winter. A cook stove was very rare. There were not many available and very few could afford one. Instead, fireplaces were built so the pots and pans would hang over the fire and cook the food. Some homes had two fire places but most had only one. Dinnerware was usually tin cups, plates and silverware. Most of the silverware was tin but some had pewter. These were usually brought on the covered wagons because access to shopping was very limited. Gourds were used for water pitchers, food containers, milk pails and water buckets. Water was available from a nearby stream or a hand dug well. Baths were generally in a No. 2 wash tub and the water was heated up in the fireplace for a warmer bath. Most families had horses (brought from the east with the wagons), cows, pigs and chickens, so meat was available at home and additional wild life was plentiful for those families that had a rifle or gun. Fish were also available in the streams. When the Shawnee Trail came through Prosper beginning in 1860, there were many stray cows left over from the cattle drives, so the farmers picked up these strays for their own use.

Monday was always wash day. One of the reasons that Monday was chosen is that most of the family worked six days a week and had plenty of soiled clothes by the weekend. They could not wash on Sunday because it was a day of Sabbath and no work was to be done. It was a day to go to church, rest and socialize. So Monday was chosen as wash day. They made their own lye soap using fat (grease) and mixing with lye to form the soap. They would build a large fire underneath a large steel pot and put the clothes in the boiling hot water and the lye soap. They had four or five washtubs in a line filled with clean water and they would go down the line rinsing the clothes in each tub until the soap was cleaned from the clothes. Then the clothes were hung out to dry, usually on a barbed wire fence or, if you were lucky, a clothes line which you could hang the clothes to dry. A clothes line was two poles stuck in the ground about 7 or 8 yards apart with wires/ ropes running from one pole to another. You may have two or three lines going from one pole to another. Many times a “Blue Norther” would come through and the clothes would be frozen stiff on the fence or clothes line. After the clothes were dry they were folded into two different stacks. Those that needed ironing and those that did not. The clothes that had to be ironed were sprinkled down with water and rolled up to keep the moisture in the material and waited for the iron to be heated by fire to get it warm enough to iron the clothes. As you can see, “wash day” required a lot of time and normally it required two days…one for the washing and one for the ironing. Growing up in this period of time took a lot of hard work and lots of patience. The families usually had quite a few children because they needed for them to help with the farm chores. Working on the farm was a six-day week. They were up before dark for breakfast and do the morning chores such as milking the cows, feeding pigs, feeding the chickens or gathering the eggs. Then those old enough to work would go to the fields and work until noon. When the wife had time, which was not very often, she would finish the breakfast dishes and then head to the field to help. She would work until

noon and then go home and fix lunch. After lunch she would go back to the field and work until dinner time. Before dinner she would come back home and prepare the meal. She did most of her house chores at night when she was not working in the fields. The men had other chores such as getting firewood and taking care of the livestock. Everyone in the family, including the children that were old enough, worked in the garden. The garden was a major part of obtaining their food. Everyone had a vegetable garden and nearly every type of vegetable was included in the garden. Field work consisted of planting, hoeing and picking cotton. Also planting and gathering corn, planting and harvesting wheat and oats. Most of the settlers had cows, chickens, hogs which supplemented their food. These settlers were self-supporting in the food area and truly knew what it meant to live off the land – they had no other choice. It was a very different time than today…there were no grocery stores, shopping centers or medical facilities within close proximity. But without the sacrifices of these brave settlers, Prosper would not be what it is today.

FREESt yle With fall in full swing, everything seems to get busier! On the days you have to go straight from day to night, make it easy on yourself and use these 4 tricks to make your casual day look night-ready with minimal effort!

Sprinkle In Some Sparkle Last month, we talked about how adding color, texture, pattern, and shine into a look makes even simple pieces (like a black top and jeans) look chic and put together. Shine is hands down my favorite weapon for a girls night out or a date night! Try adding a bold piece of jewelry like this necklace, wearing sparkly shoes, or layering a bejeweled cardigan over your top.

Step Up Your Shoes Wear flats, sandals, or booties during the day, then swap out your shoes for night. Try a pair with a heel, edgy detailing, or an embellishment to make your look pop!

Pack A Clutch Grab a clutch and stick it in the purse that helps you survive whatever’s on your calendar that day, whether you’re at school, hauling kids from here to there, or in the office! Just pull it out, add the bare essentials, and enjoy your night out!

Just Add Lipstick You could also add a swipe of color to your lips to make your look more dramatic. My secret weapon is a clear lip pencil. It works with every lipstick I have and keeps the color from bleeding! Use one or a combination of these tricks to make your casual basics perfect for a laid back night out this month!

In His Presence

Calming My Back-to-School Mama’s Heart By Karen Ehman, Proverbs31.org

“Then He went down with them and ca me to Nazareth and was

obedient to them. His mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people.” Luke 2:51-52 Neatly lined notebook paper. Sharpened number two pencils. A brand-new box of brightly-colored crayons. A sturdy lunch box ready for the first PB&J of the year. Permission slips. Sports schedules. Class lists. So many details and so much stuff! This time of year, shopping for 3-ring binders can seem almost like a 3-ring circus. Gone are the lazy days of summer. The fall school routine brings new courses, loads of homework and many extracurricular activities. While the arrival of the school year brings a fresh start — and soon the change of seasons — it can also bring a lot of worry to a mama’s heart. Our thoughts turn toward our children’s interaction with others. We wonder how our timid child will fare in a brand-new classroom, when most of his friends are in another class. We fret about our prank-pulling middle schooler, earnestly hoping he doesn’t make a habit of getting called to the principal’s office. We fear for our high school student, worried she will start hanging around the wrong crowd. Or we stress over academic concerns. Will our struggling first grader ever make progress in her reading? Will math ever click with our fifth grader who gets hives when she sees a story problem? Will our high schooler get into his hopedfor university? Besides relational and academic matters, we also long for kids who are spiritually and physically healthy and strong. If left unchecked, our thoughts and concerns as mothers can wreak havoc on our hearts as we allow the tentacles of worry to choke out our joy. We find an antidote to worry in the gospel of Luke and the story of Mary and Jesus. Luke 2 mentions four areas Jesus grew in as a young boy: “And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and with people.” Our Lord grew wiser each year. He physically grew. His relationship with His Heavenly Father continually strengthened. Jesus even gained favor with people here on earth who saw Him day to day. And how I love the simple sentence that precedes this: “His mother kept all these things in her heart.” When Mary was mothering Jesus, she tucked thoughts of her son safely in her heart. Some Bible translations say she “treasured” them. Others use the word “cherished.” The original Greek word meant, “to keep safe or hold fast.” In none of these descriptions do we see Mary fretting and fussing, worried and anxious, disquieted and unsettled. She pondered about her son and his growth, but she didn’t allow her mama heart to become rattled. This fall, let’s turn our anxious thoughts into treasured prayers, kept safe and held fast by our loving Father — the one who knows our hearts and loves our children even more than we do. When a concern pops up in our mind, let’s drop to our knees and carry that concern to God. When we start to fear for our child’s future, let’s petition the only one who knows exactly what the future holds. When we turn our worries into our prayers, we create space in our hearts to treasure and cherish the sweet moments with our kids. These paper-and-pencil school days won’t last forever. Let’s delight in all that God is teaching our kids, whether it’s how to read, how to forge friendships or how to solidify their walk with Him. And realize they aren’t the only ones being taught; we moms are learning a life-long lesson in trusting and treasuring, knowing God is always in control.

Father, please help me this year to turn my worries into prayers, knowing You are in control. Allow me to treasure each moment with my children as they grow in wisdom and stature and in favor with others and also with Y ou. In Jesus’ Na me, Amen. 36
