August 2015 VOL III, Issue 12

Voted 2013 New Business of The Year Executive Publishers Jason & Heather Reynolds Editorial/Marketing Director Heather Reynolds Heather@CedarbrookMedia.com

This is special year at our house…a year of FIRSTS and a year of LASTS. For those of you who know us, our children range in ages from 18 months to 18 years. And this year we have one entering preschool, middle school and high school…and two seniors! So while the girls embark on the adventures at their new campuses, our oldest boys are looking forward to their last year of high school and the beginning of their new adult lives. It’s a bittersweet year…but then again, aren’t they all? As parents, our greatest joy is watching our babies grow up, hit new milestones and develop into all that they were created to be. All the while, yearning for time to stand still – or let’s be honest, to rewind! It’s going to be a fun year for everyone. Our administrators and teachers have put a lot of time and effort into ensuring the best year possible for the students. Our PTOs have been working all summer to make sure that each campus has whatever they need and that the good times roll for the students. Coaches and athletes are practicing day and night to produce Eagle teams that we’re all proud to support this fall. Parents are shopping, setting schedules, planning breakfast, lunch and snack ideas, and picking up last minute school supplies that their kids “have to have.” And our students are mentally preparing to adjust back into school mode…like it or not! As we jump into the Back to School season with Meet the Teacher nights, Schedule Pickups, Locker Practice and Curriculum Nights, don’t forget to attend two of the most fun events this month…Meet the Eagles on August 15th and the Back to School Bash on August 22nd! Both are wonderful community events to foster our Prosper Pride and celebrate our Eagle Nation. We wish each of our Prosper Eagle students the best year ever! Be the best you can be. Give the most you can give. Be courteous. Be kind. Be strong. Be excellent. And most of all…Be Blessed! WE ARE PROSPER!!!

“It ain’t Kotta”

BY CHRIS FRITCHIE

Taking the elevator from the 17th floor, it was about a half mile walk on the other side of Harrah’s casino. We were looking forward to a bit of change in our diet over the past 5 days that we’d been in New Orleans. We did our homework, and with a 4.5 star rating, “RockN-Sake” would be a welcome variation from the Gumbo, Blackened Redfish, and amazing thin Catfish from New Orleans Seafood and Hamburger Co. It took what seemed like an uncomfortable amount of time to get the menus to us, but the Voodoo Goddess roll sounded scrumptious! Seemingly another 15 minutes, and the roll arrived along with a side order of chicken fried rice…well it only took one quick sampling and we both looked at each other and at the same moment we both whispered…”IT AIN’T KOTTA!” Located in Frisco, in the Shops of Starwood, it is easily our favorite kitchen away from home. Suited well for a quick lunch or dinner after a long day, or for a special night out, Kotta Sushi Lounge is the standard to what we judge all other Sushi…oh wait…dining out experience by. Most reviews compliment the food and speak highly of the service, and to be fair, we are “regulars”. And yes…everyone knows our name. Kotta takes not only the quality of the food, but also the quality of the service, to a

12 PROSPER Magazine | August 2015

new level. It’s important to note that if you’re thinking about trying this lounge, you’d better call ahead and get a reservation. However, if you don’t have a reservation, sitting at the Sushi Bar and watching the 5 or 6 Sushi Chefs do their thing is always fun. Greeted on most evenings by two hostesses as well as Ken, the owner, is pretty common. If you don’t see him right away, fear not, you’ll see him engaged in conversation with patrons and watching over the dishes making sure they look as beautiful as they taste. Ken has consistently taken service to the next level…it’s tough to rate which is better, the service or the food. Let’s just say we never leave hungry! Tonight, we were quickly greeted, shown our seats and handed a menu, sushi list and drink list. Our waitress gave us a few minutes to look things over, and trust me, there is a lot to choose from. With a bit of a contemporary Japanese setting, this intimate

dining establishment is family friendly but cozy enough for date night. And there is always the option of dining on the patio. If you do have to wait a few minutes, the full service bar is always available to get a quick drink. When our waitress returned, we quickly decided on a bottle of Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc, a perfect complement to our favorite appetizer, the Asian Beef Coleslaw. Now, to be fair I’m not a coleslaw fan…you won’t find it on my plate anywhere but here. I should make a side note; it is the PERFECT take home late night snack! Light and fragrant, the Asian slaw has a slight crisp and tangy flavor. It consists of cabbage mix with cilantro, thinly sliced sirloin steak tossed in an Asian house dressing, and topped off with crushed peanuts. It’s a perfect light crisp flavor with fantastic texture. Trust me on this one, step outside your comfort zone and give this a try! Tonight we decided to only enjoy our typical favorite rolls, but also order off the

WAYNE BARTLEY

Caring for Clients and Community entrée menu. The Miso Glazed Chilean Sea Bass has been calling my name! Perfectly cooked, the light and flaky sea bass is unbelievable. The miso glaze can be a bit on the sweet side, so a little tip, order it on the side. Complementing the sea bass are seasoned rice and sautéed vegetables. This is truly one of the best fish dishes we’ve ever tasted. Now is when the difficult part begins. I’ll be honest…the Nacho Roll is no doubt the shining star of Kotta Sushi Lounge. This amazing roll is perfect for those new to sushi or those who find a little crunch mandatory. The Nacho Roll consists of crab, cream cheese with jalapeno inside, panko fried rice, topped w/spicy tuna, spicy crab, tobiko, sweet Thai chili sauce, spicy mayo and eel sauce. On your first visit (or every visit) to Kotta this is mandatory! Some of our other favorites…the Phoenix Roll - this roll will wow everyone at the table as it is presented with flames a-blazing! A perfect blend of tempura shrimp, spicy crabmeat, cucumber, and topped with spicy tuna and super white tuna. The Jackie Chan is also a local favorite amongst diners. Spicy crab, mango topped with a mixture of finely chopped avocado, cilantro, jalapeno and topped with fresh tuna, drizzled in Kotta’s signature cilantro ponzu sauce! If you still can’t decide, try the Celebration Roll, the Sea Scallops w/spicy garlic sauce, Kotta Tower, Mardi Gras Roll or the Pepper Tuna Salad. You will not be disappointed.

In His Presence

I

t’s a new season for so many families moving to our community. Parents have taken new jobs, bought new homes and now set about the often anxious process of finding new friends, new hair stylists, new dentists ,new churches; the list seems never ending. Of course the children have their own new set of circumstances. Many are entering new schools filled with unfamiliar faces. In the midst of all your newness, we welcome you and assure you that you have chosen a wonderful place to live. Our community is filled with great leaders in every facet of life. We have capable, caring people sitting on our town councils. We have a kind and skilled medical community. You’ll soon find welcoming shop owners and waitresses that will serve you with a smile. And, last but not least, you’ll discover that your children are being educated by simply one of the best school systems in our country. We are blessed with awesome superintendents, active PTO’s, and fantastic principals who have gathered superb teachers, support staff and volunteers that have one goal in mind; the betterment of your children. But let’s be sure to remember this; the betterment of our children begins at home. The Bible says in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” While many of us entrust the educational development our greatest treasures into the hands of professional teachers, we should realize that the primary responsibility of setting the path of life for our children comes from us as parents. This is a daunting task and makes us quickly realize our inadequacies and our need for wisdom beyond ourselves. At Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, we believe the church plays a very important equipping role in the community when it comes to producing quality children. For instance, as the timeless truths of God make their way into our hearts, we find ourselves as parents discovering how to maneuver the relational waters of learning to properly communicate with our sons and daughters. His grace equips us to have the patience and tenacity to stand lovingly during the somewhat dark days of teenage discipline. Hope always accompanies the hearing of God’s good news. Our children are truly our greatest resource. We love, appreciate and support the ones who have dedicated their lives to equipping our children, but perhaps it’s time we engage in a different way with God in order to better meet our responsibilities as parents. If we can serve your family in this or any other way, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Be blessed, Pastor Kenny Thacker Lighthouse Christian Fellowship 4331 E. Prosper Trail Prosper, TX 75078

Even with Drought Over, Water Conservation Still Necessary

Prosper Watering Schedule

By Mayor Ray Smith

Seems like we’re almost always thinking about water, either the lack of it or too much of it. Prior to this spring, the entire North Texas area was in the throes of what appeared to be an impenetrable drought. For almost five years, the area was thirsting for rain. I’m sure you’ll recall the panicked calls for more and more conservation. In 2013 we were even looking at entering what was then Stage 4, which would have completely eliminated any and all outdoor watering. It was a serious time, and weather forecasters were all united in predicting another three or four years of arid, dry and hot weather. As we entered 2014, we all thought that life would never be the same. Water supplies in our reservoirs were hitting all-time lows. Lake Lavon was particularly hard hit. The main source of water for one of the fastest growing areas in the state was down to about half its capacity. Cities and towns which depended on Lake Lavon for their water were beginning to look for more and more ways to conserve. On top of that, water from our largest reservoir was off-limits. The Town’s water supplier, the North Texas Municipal Water District, had completely closed off any harvesting from Lake Texoma because of the infestation of zebra mussels. These small, invasive mollusks made their way into Lake Texoma from the Great Lakes by hitching on to the bottoms of boats. Their proliferation clogged water transfer pipes and put our entire water system at risk. Shutting off Lake Texoma was the only way to stop their spread. That shutoff represented a quarter of the water supply usually available to our supplier. With even less water available, cities and towns were forced to respond in creative ways. In Prosper, our Public Works Department established the Water Conservation Education Office and began partnering with the Texas A&M Agri-Life Extension Service to offer seminars and workshops on water conservation, harvesting what little rain we got, and converting sprinkler systems from spraying to drip irrigation. The seminars were not only well-received by residents, but they were very well-attended with some filled to capacity. But we were still looking at a diminishing supply of available water for irrigation and landscaping. Many of us started investigating the possibility of converting our thirsty plants and shrubs to xeriscaping and adding drought-tolerant varieties to our landscaping. Then it started raining. For much of May, and even into June, it rained so much that meteorologists declared the drought over. Our reservoirs were filling rapidly and many reached capacity in a few weeks. The new dedicated water line from Lake Texoma was completed, allowing for water to be harvested from that lake once again.

Our water supplier even changed its conservation stages, from a four-stage system to a new system that only had three stages. We are now in Stage 1, which is the least restrictive of the three stages. However, we must still conserve. It would not be far-fetched to assume that we can easily enter another period of drought. A map accompanies this article which outlines which parts of Town may water on specific days. I would encourage everyone to become familiar with their watering days and comply with them. And, do not forget that watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. is still prohibited. For more information on this topic, please visit www. prospertx.gov/government/departments/waterconservation/.

Education

Austin College:

An Educational Gem in our own Backyard By: Joey Womble & Mike Sinclair

Just a 30 minute drive north of Prosper is one of the real gems when it comes to education in North Texas, Austin College. Austin College, a fouryear residential college located in Sherman, is the oldest institution of higher learning in Texas. Since 1849, Austin College has maintained an unwavering commitment to the transformative power of education. With more than 50 areas of study in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences, including renowned pre-professional preparation for law, medicine, dentistry, the ministry, engineering, and other graduate programs, Austin College students experience breadth and depth in academic study. 90 percent of graduates pursuing graduate school and 93 percent of graduates seeking a career are employed in the first year after college. Austin College Gateways is a program that helps simplify the process of entering graduate school. Gateways provides a clear path to graduate studies through accelerated admissions, partial and full scholarships, and advanced coursework. To date, Gateways includes 51 programs at 15 partner universities. AC has been referred to as a “doctor factory.” A huge percentage of the students majoring in pre-med courses get accepted into med school their first year after graduation. Few colleges offer a greater emphasis on international education, highlighted by a nationally recognized study abroad program. Service opportunities such as the Global Outreach summer fellowships also have sent students on service volunteer projects around the world. Austin College is consistently ranked among the top colleges in the nation

20

PROSPER Magazine | August 2015

for percentage of participation in international study by the Institute of International Education. Each year, AC offers the “Jan Term.” This brief mid-semester is used to travel abroad for life changing educational experiences.

Learning happens in classroom discussions led by talented professors who are dedicated to teaching, passionate about their work, and eager to pass information to their students. Faculty and students often work together in research projects and learning opportunities that often lead to published research and nation-wide presentations. Opportunities to ask questions and pursue special interests abound. Faculty mentors are assigned to students from day one and continue to advise them through 4 years. Recognition of the preparation of Austin College students extends far beyond campus. Current students and graduates receive prestigious awards for their work. In fact, Austin College is recognized as a Top-Producing Fulbright School. Many students have been chosen for the highly selective Teach for America program. The college also is one of only about 280 schools in the nation with a chapter of the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society.

The college provides a variety of cultural opportunities for members of the Grayson County communities in areas of music, art, and theatre, and Austin College students regularly participate in local groups affiliated with the arts. The presence of the college also makes a significant economic impact in the north Texas area. The recently established Austin College Center for Community and Regional Development serves as a resource for Texoma communities to work with the college to achieve local goals. Guided by ambitions and opportunities for students to see and experience the world’s complexities first-hand, Austin College graduates are prepared to be leaders and active participants in their communities. As former New York Times education editor Loren Pope wrote in Colleges That Change Lives, Austin College “is doing the essential work of producing the enlightened, responsible, creative people with moral compasses who make democracy work.” Both of my sons graduated from Austin College. Our family felt that a degree from AC was well worth the investment. Private schools of this nature are generally thought of to be extremely expensive. But Austin College does a tremendous job of providing financial assistance to incoming students. You should check into it. It may be more affordable than you think. If you have a son or daughter preparing to graduate from Prosper High School and they are looking for a liberal arts education, Austin College is a great option.

Eagle’s Nest It’s hard to believe that the new school year is almost upon us. We have been extremely busy this summer with professional development, hiring 150+ new employees, and getting ready to open a new campus (Light Farms Elementary School) as we prepare for our 8,000+ students! That is not a typo… we are expecting over 8,000 students for the upcoming school year. We are excited about all of the new students joining our PISD family. We could not have finished the previous school year any better than with a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP for baseball. We have phenomenal students who excel in so many different ways. I can’t wait to see what the new school year holds for our incredible students. Our great school district is a direct reflection of our amazingly supportive community. Thank you ahead of time for your patience and understanding as we work to balance the demands of our growing district. On any given day we might possibly fall short of meeting your expectations, but know that we are committed to serve our students, our families, and our community in the most exemplary way. WE ARE PROSPER!!!

School Times

Elementary Schools: 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Rogers Middle School: 7:55 a.m. to 2:55 p.m. Reynolds Middle School: 8:25 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. Prosper High School: 8:25 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. The school start and end times have changed slightly for the upcoming school year due to our significant growth and our need as a district to go back to a double-tier bus routing. Double tier bus routing is when you use the same bus and driver for one campus and after it completes its route, it goes to another campus to complete a different route. In our case, elementary busses after finishing their routes will be used to do the High School routes. Likewise, the Rogers buses, after finishing their routes, will be used to do the Reynolds routes. We wanted to be sure that we are still placing a priority on not combining mixed aged kids, and preserving the same campus age grouping on the buses.

Student Registration Returning Student Registration Parents of returning PISD students are reminded to register their school children online through InfoSnap. It is important for parents to complete this registration information yearly in order to ensure we have accurate information for your student. An automated email has been sent to parents containing InfoSnap information for each student for registration. If you did not receive an email with this information, please contact the Campus Registrar. New Student Registration For new student registration information, visit the Prosper ISD website (www.prosper-isd. net) and click on the parents tab, next choose Student Registration, and finally choose 20152016 New Student Registration. This web page will provide you with information regarding registration as well as provide you a link to our

online registration system InfoSnap. From this web page click on either the English or Spanish link to be routed to InfoSnap. Once you have completed the online registration process and you received the submission confirmation page, you may then go to your child’s campus to complete the registration process. There you will meet with the campus registrar who will review your documents to ensure all required information for registration has been received. On average this process will take anywhere between 15 to 30 minutes so please plan accordingly. We suggest that you contact the campus registrar to make an appointment to ensure they are available when you arrive. Please bring to the appointment copies of the following documents for your child:

Transportation

• Birth Certificate • Social Security Card • Immunization Record • Proof of Residency – Must be a current utility bill – electric or water • Latest Report Card • Current Transcript (HS Students only) • Parent’s Driver’s License

As a reminder, students who live within 2 miles of their designated campus are not eligible for transportation. In rare cases, the PISD School Board has defined certain routes as hazardous because of the absence of adequate sidewalks or crosswalks as defined by board policy. For added safety, PISD will post additional crossing guards at busy intersections to assist students walking to and from school. Please note the crossing guard locations are located on PISD Transportations website.

School Supplies

The PISD elementary schools, Rogers MS (5th & 6th) and Reynolds MS (7th & 8th) offered parents the opportunity to purchase school supply packs in the spring. At the elementary schools, pre-ordered supplies will be delivered to each child’s classroom before Meet the Teacher Night. Rogers Middle School students can pick up their pre-ordered supplies during the open locker practices. Reynolds Middle School students will pick up their pre-ordered supplies on the first day of school. School supply lists can be found online at www.prosper-isd.net on the Parents tab. High school students simply need paper and a pen the first day of school, and their individual teachers will provide students with the course requirements.

Prosper ISD continues to bring quality transportation to the Prosper community through district-owned and supervised school bus services. All bus routes are equipped with propane-powered school buses, all with seatbelts, air conditioning, and video surveillance. Beginning August 17th, parents can access their child’s bus route information by navigating to their Skyward Family Access account. Then, click on the tab titled, Student Info. On the Student Info page click on the link labeled, View Bus Schedule, located to the right of the student’s picture. If you have any questions, please contact Prosper ISD’s Transportation office at 469-2192065.

Parents will also be able to set up and deposit money into the student’s lunch account. Separate checks will be needed for school purchases and PTO purchases.

Im so excited to get back to theatre. I’ve missed the creative environment we have there. There’s nothing better than a stinky green room, sarcasm, and dark comedies.”

I’m looking forward to being able to make more friends throughout the year and being more involved with school, football, and track. I am also looking forward to all the football season and going to all the varsity games.”

There will be an Athletic Parent Meeting at 8:00 p.m. during schedule pickup for the respective grade levels. Parents will receive important information from the coaches regarding athletics and will be able to turn in their child’s physical forms at that time. Also, on Friday, August 14th, student athletes will have football equipment pick up at Reynolds at the following times: 8th grade 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m., 7th grade 10:30 a.m. – noon. All 7th & 8th grade volleyball tryouts will be held after school on Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday until 5:30 p.m. and Friday until 4:30 p.m. during the first week of school. The Reynolds school day is 8:25 a.m. – 3:40 p.m. Supervision will begin at 7:25 a.m. each school day. As students arrive, they may report to the cafeteria. They will then be directed to their grade level location for the first day. The Reynolds family is eager for another exciting school year as we continue to build our traditions of excellence.

In all honesty. coming from a school with uniforms. I’m excited about wearing normal clothes. I am also really excited to see old friends from when I was younger.”

Something I am looking forward to this next school year is being able to see my best friend everyday, and possibly making some new friends. The only downfall to summer is not being able to see the person that puts a smile on your face Monday through Friday. This upcoming school year will allow me to do just that, and maybe there will be a little learning thrown in there.”

Tips For Creating Healthy, Homemade Meals A+ Meals

Stock Your Pantry:

Get Creative :

The start of a new school year means less time to think about dinner. The good news is, with just a little advance planning and these three easy tips, in no time you’ll be whipping up wholesome “A+” meals your family will love.

Add canned fruits, vegetables, proteins and soups to your back-to-school shopping list. Like home canning, cans seal in foods’ natural goodness and nutrition, making hearty, homemade meals simple and delicious.

For a healthy, home-cooked dinner, all you need is a can opener, a strainer and some imagination. Canned crushed tomatoes, sliced carrots and chopped spinach create a savory Vegetable Lasagna worthy of seconds, and canned chicken with white beans, hominy and chicken broth combine for a White Chicken Chili that’s ready in just 30 minutes.

Vegetable Lasagna Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 40 minutes Servings: 12

1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes 1 large garlic clove, crushed 1 teaspoon dried basil 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 15-ounce container ricotta cheese 1 large egg 12 no-boil lasagna noodles 1 14.5-ounce can sliced carrots, well drained 1 13.5-ounce can chopped spinach, well drained 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese In 2-quart saucepan over high heat, heat tomatoes, garlic, basil, salt and pepper. Heat to boiling; reduce to low and simmer uncovered 10 minutes to blend flavors. Heat oven to 375°F. Grease 12-by-8-inch baking dish. In medium bowl combine ricotta cheese and egg until well mixed. Spoon tomato sauce on bottom of dish to coat. Place 3 uncooked noodles lengthwise across the pan. Top with 1/3 of tomato sauce. With spatula, spread 1/3 of ricotta mixture. Scatter 1/3 of carrots and spinach on ricotta and 1/3 of mozzarella cheese. Repeat with uncooked noodles, tomato sauce, ricotta, vegetables and mozzarella two more times. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Cover dish with foil; bake 30 minutes. Uncover dish; bake 10 minutes longer. Let cool before cutting.

1 large onion, chopped 2 celery stalks, diced 1 large garlic clove, minced 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 tablespoon chili powder 1 tablespoon ground cumin 2 10-ounce cans chicken breast, drained and flaked 1 15.5-ounce can small white beans, drained and rinsed 1 15.5-ounce can white hominy, drained and rinsed 1 14.5-ounce can chicken broth 1 4.5-ounce can chopped green chiles, drained 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 2 tablespoons fresh chopped parsley or cilantro Sour cream Shredded cheddar cheese for garnish In 3-quart saucepan over medium-high heat, cook onion, celery and garlic in hot oil about 5 minutes until tender-crisp, stirring occasionally. Stir in chili powder and cumin; cook 1 minute. Add chicken, white beans, hominy, chicken broth, green chiles, salt and pepper. BLUE STAR STORAGE Involve Kids in Meal Prep: Moms face a number of challenges when trying to get their kids to eat more fruit and vegetables. According to a recent study conducted by Cans Get You Cooking, canned foods help a majority of moms (76 percent) get fruits and vegetables on the table, and into kids’ diets. Another way to encourage kids to eat healthy meals is to include them in meal preparation, which also teaches skills like measuring, counting and following directions.

Memories in the Making

F

our Prosper area families are participating in an orphan host program this summer. The orphans being hosted are from the Ukraine, where there are over 100,000 orphans. Only 10% of orphans in the Ukraine are orphans due to parental death. Most Ukrainian orphans are orphaned due to alcoholism, abandonment or imprisonment. They age out of the system at 16 and are unprepared for life outside the orphanage. 15% of these children will commit suicide by their 18th birthday, 70% of the girls will end up in prostitution and most of the boys lead of life of crime and end up in prison. The goal of the orphan host program is to give these children hope. To show them that there is life outside the orphanage and people who care and love them.

30 PROSPER Magazine | August 2015

“I am Tasha Bradley, and our family is hosting Bogdon this summer. Bogdon is 10 years old and is amazing young boy full of life. He is a funny, energetic, athletic, friendly and sweet boy. He came to us with nothing but the clothes on his back and only speaking Ukrainian. He has never lived or functioned in a family, has never had a home with plumbing or central air, swam in a swimming pool or had the simple luxury of bathing daily and wearing fresh, clean clothes daily. Our first few days with Bogdon were heart breaking for me. So many things about him told his hard story. He would eat his entire meal set before him in 3 bites. This is a habit from the orphanage to keep bigger or more aggressive children from eating his food. Not speaking the same language was hard too. He couldn’t communicate his fears, questions or what he

needed. Translation apps were helpful, but they don’t speak Ukrainian. I think he thought we were truly crazy that we wanted him to shower every day and change clothes. He simply couldn’t understand it. One of our first things to do was to make a visit to Dr. John Roberts at Roberts Dental Ranch. I cannot even put into words how sad his teeth are from lack of care and brushing. He has had 7 teeth that were black and decayed beyond the point of repair. In addition to Dr. Roberts extracting 7 teeth, he filled many cavities. I don’t even know how the child was eating. I cannot even imagine how much pain he was in, yet if you asked him if they hurt, he would tell you no. Eye exams are also not a part of normal care for orphans in the Ukraine. Many of the children who come to America need corrective lenses. Dr. Kelvin VanVoorst of Prosper Family Eye care examined Bogdon and we received good news. Bogdon’s eyes are good, so just a lot of dental work for him. We have fallen in love with this little guy. It will be hard on all of us when we have to return him to the Ukraine on August 15th. And no we can’t

just keep him, I wish it was that simple. It’s wonderful watching him just being a boy.” “I am Ashley Breslin and this has been the most rewarding experience of my life. Liza is here with us for the summer from Ukraine, at age 15. Our hope and prayer is that she will be adopted in America before she ages out at 16. This child has taught our family so much, specifically how much you can love another person even with a complete language barrier. We may have issues verbally communicating, but we communicate in so many other ways, charades, body language, google translate, etc. We learned very quickly that she is the most humble, gentle, giving, nurturing, loving, kind, caring, trusting individual we have ever been around. To know what kind of life she lives, and has lived since being abandoned at age 6, it is a true testament to God’s amazing love. That He saves us all and shines through all who know, trust and love Him. Our hope is that others will learn about the opportunity to provide hope and show love to orphans around the world through our experience and realize it is very tangible to do so, and when walking down this path, many doors open to make it possible to serve in this manner.”

Denium Done Right Style

Denim is everywhere this year. Here are a few styling tricks to give your denim looks a little extra polish.

BY CAITLIN SKIDMORE

THE JEAN: Want to look more polished in jeans? A dark wash w your look instantly. When it comes to cuts, the most flattering is a pair of mid-rise trouser jeans. Look for falls straight to the ground from the widest part of y give you the longest, leanest line. The bottom of the should sit just above the ground, so you may need tw wear with flats versus heels.

THE CHAMBRAY TOP: This lightweight, jean-like material gives the classic button up a fresh twist. Plus, just like jeans, chambray goes with everything. Try pairing a chambray top with a variety of colors and patterns. It can even double as a jean “jacket” when left unbuttoned over a top. To pull off a denim on denim look, go with an obviously-different colored jean to avoid looking like you tried to match but missed the mark.

For an updated casual take on skinny jeans, try cuffing the hem. Fold just the hem of your pant leg up once, and then flip the outside edge up once more. Don’t worry about getting the cuffs to match perfectly. A little messy is perfect for a laid back look. This trick works best with a slimmer pant leg, and is a great option if your pant legs are a little too long and pool at the top of your shoes.

Remember When A Look Back at Prosper’s History

THE ZION CEMETERY SCHOOL & CHURCH

BY BILL HAYS

The Zion Cemetery, once a cemetery, church, and school, is located in Denton county where residents of Prosper, Collin County, Little Elm, and the Navo/Elm Ridge areas are able to bury and remember their loved ones. Today only the cemetery remains and is still active today. The cemetery is located in eastern Denton county. It is three miles south of Highway 380 and on the east side of FM 423 where it’s surrounded by a scenic hill with beautiful sights in all directions. First known as the Hawkins Settlement, (J. Henry Hawkins) after the Hawkins family moved into the area around 1850. The family donated the land for the cemetery and the earliest grave was placed in 1856. There were numerous slaves buried in the cemetery but there are no headstones for the slaves. There are currently approximately 220 headstones in the cemetery. Benny Noles is the current caretaker for the cemetery. Annie Young Huey was responsible for caring and maintaining the cemetery. She purchased land around the cemetery and used the income to support the cemetery. Annie was born December 17, 1880 in Denton county, Texas. Her parents were James T. and Mary Button Young. She married Meshach Barber in April 1914. Meshach was born September 13, 1878 in Gregg County, Texas. Annie died October 15, 1969. Annie so loved the Zion community that she gave to other charitable organizations is the area. Also, she loved her mother so much that she built a chapel at the cemetery. It was first called the Methodist Society but later became the Mary Button Young Chapel. This chapel was used for many years although later became vandalized and used by drug people. The chapel burned in 1990.

happen. After a few classes, I started to get the swing of things and became more confident in how to do things in the proper way in class and out of class too. At a formal event with many family members and friends, I was more confident in knowing that I would represent my family better than before. Junior Cotillion has helped me in being a better 7th grader in school, at home, and just going out. It has taught me life-long lessons that will help me forever.” - Abigail S - Prosper, TX “Junior Cotillion is many things. Is it dancing? Yes, but Junior Cotillion has helped me become more wellrounded in many areas. I have learned many things that I will carry forward. For instance, remembering that everyone should be treated with kindness and respect. Including everyone, not just your friends. Understanding all the intricacies of a proper thank you. How to not only act like a lady, but being modest and humble while doing so. Confidence in knowing you can do anything. Junior Cotillion is so much more than a class on formal dancing. It is a way to act and live, now and in the future. It is something to be proud of that will give you skills and self confidence in many situations.” - Bryn B - McKinney, TX

MISSION STATEMENT: To act and learn to treat others with honor, dignity, and respect for better relationships with family, friends, and associates and to learn and practice ballroom dance.

This has become an annual event for us and we hope to see it continue growing to support the community that has given so much support to us.” Dr. Travis Campbell These events could not be possible without great sponsors like InTouch Credit Union, Prosper Insurance Agency, Market Street, Suddenlink and Henry Schein. Local churches like First United Methodist of Frisco and Genesis Metro Church have helped provide food and support. If you would like to help sponsor this amazing event, please contact Dr. Campbell directly by phone or email (972-533-2458, DrCampbell@380dental.com).
