// Letter From The PUBLISHERS
Happy Holidays!! It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and we couldn’t be more excited! December is all about the magic of the season, family, blessings, faith and giving. Everywhere you look, it’s there…the hope, the love and the belief. This is truly the best time of the year for spending time with your loved ones, and our Christmas wish for you is that you cherish these times. The hustle and bustle of the Holiday Season is fun and exciting, but the true meaning of the Season is about giving, miracles and believing. As parents, we always want the very best for our children, and we work hard to ensure that we are building incredible memories that they will carry with them always…but sometimes, we get so caught up in the act of building those memories that we miss the importance of the here and now. Our older children have taught us that it isn’t necessarily the big events that they remember…it’s the smaller details, the love, the grace and the sentiment. Our family shares some really fun holiday traditions, and we’ve decided to add a few new ones this year for our youngest, who is celebrating her 1st birthday at the end of this month. It’s been so amazing to watch the older kids participate in establishing the traditions we’ll keep for her…it is through their eyes that we see the times that are truly memorable and the importance of us just being present and involved. The ornaments we make, the cookies we bake and the gingerbread houses we decorate are all wonderful and fun, but the time we’ve shared is what they remember, and what they seem to reminisce about the most. So, while you plan your events this month, do so in front of a cozy fire with your family. Grab some hot chocolate, turn on some Christmas music and gather around your tree…involve every member of your family in the planning, and let them all choose something important to them. They might surprise you with what they come up with, and it’ll make for one of the best holidays ever! And, as always, if you are able, try to include a way for your family to give someone less fortunate a holiday to remember. The blessing your give is more precious than any gift you could ever receive. Merry Christmas from our home to yours!!

Healthy S olutions Your Sleeping Patterns Might Be Affecting Your Health
Years ago when attending a continuing education course, I was shocked to learn that more than 100 million Americans of all ages regularly fail to get a good night’s sleep. That’s over 30% of our population that are not getting the needed benefits of proper rest. Finding this number alarmingly high, I also thought about other family members that might not have a sleep disorder but are affected by a loved one who snores or gasps for air through the night, making it impossible for both to get a good night’s rest. Sleep deprivation takes a toll on your mind, body, and overall health in ways that might surprise you. Research shows that lack of sleep is linked to diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, colds and flu, mental health and obesity. So can adequate sleep protect you from illness? Absolutely. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is caused by numerous anatomical structures, and the mandible (lower jaw) and tongue are primary in causation. That’s where dentistry comes into the picture. Once a dentist is thoroughly trained specifically in OSA, and if a dentist suspects a patient of having OSA, then we suggest a simple take-home
test to evaluate your sleep. This test evaluates heart rate, amount of oxygen in your blood, amount of time spent snoring, and the number of times that your breathing stops. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep. People with untreated Sleep Apnea stop breathing repeatedly during their sleep, sometimes hundreds of times. This means the brain and the rest of the body may not get enough oxygen. Men, women and kids can suffer from it, and this can affect their performance at work or school. How can you tell if you suffer from Sleep Apnea? At Prosper Dental Health we have the device to conduct a sleep study in the comfort of your home. You are able to take the device home and return it the next day so we are able, in coordination with a physician who is Board Certified in Sleep Disorders, to determine if you suffer from Sleep Apnea. Once the physician makes a diagnosis and provides recommended treatment options,

you may be appropriately treated with a simple oral appliance known as a Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD). You will be able to wear this appliance during your sleep. It helps by opening your airway so you can get the needed oxygen during your sleeping hours. Not only do we treat the Sleep Apnea patient but we also impact the rest of the family that is affected by their loved one’s snoring and gasping for air. I have many stories to tell you about patients treated with these oral appliances. Some of the best hugs I have received in my career are from them. Very often, when they come for their first post-treatment appointment, they feel better and are more rested. They are not falling asleep at work or behind the wheel. Some of them have stopped taking blood pressure medication, with doctor’s permission, because it has returned to normal readings. It’s a great feeling. Don’t miss the chance to know if something so dangerous for your health can be improved in a very effective and simple way. If you suspect you or a loved one suffers from Sleep Apnea, call Prosper Dental Health at 972-347-2233.

The People
Brownie Troop 6207 By Mandy Goddard
Prosper has been all over the media recently, being touted as the next boomtown of North Texas. Land developers are hard at work, records are being made with new home sales, and our local Prosper ISD is set to open the fifth elementary this upcoming school year. Families are relocating to Prosper from all over, including children who are often registering in a new school. A Brownie Troop at the newest school here, Cockrell Elementary, is taking steps to help all students develop friendships on the playground through a service project the troop proposed to campus principal Jana Thompson in November. Brownie Troop 6207 formed in August and is comprised of thirteen second grade girls enrolled at the campus. The girls chose a journey this year to follow, and voted for “A World of Girls”, which encourages making connections with countries and learning about girls all over the world. What better way to help foster those connections than by starting right here at their own school
playground in Prosper, Texas? Several of the girls are in the district’s Dual Language program representing various parts of Prosper, not just the school’s attendance zone, and not all knew each other prior to forming Troop 6207. However, they have pulled together quickly with their service project, The Buddy Bench. While each of the troop members are smart, confident girls who are active in sports and extra-curricular activities with strong family support systems, when asked if they had ever felt alone or left out on the playground, surprisingly every single girl said they had. The girls saw a need within their own school and came up with a solution. Not only did they come up with the plan, they also presented it to their principal with an initial goal to raise funds to purchase three benches so each playground at school has one. However, with the overwhelming support from Mrs. Thompson and counselor Mrs. Miller, the troop decided to set a new goal of being able to gift at
20 Live & PROSPER Magazine | December 2014
least one bench to each elementary school in Prosper ISD. Just prior to Thanksgiving break, the troop presented the Buddy Bench project to their entire school at a campus assembly, speaking in front of hundreds of peers. What exactly is a Buddy Bench? According to Taryn Strickland, “If you are feeling left out, go sit on the bench. Then a caring friend will come over to play with you.” The girls plan to work with Cockrell staff on educating others how to approach someone with kindness who may be lonely on the buddy bench. Researchers have written that when kindness and compassion are taught, it helps foster the positive behavior we expect and is key in helping reduce bullying. “Everyone is excited to find someone there so they can ask them to play”, says Ella Busbee. As we all know, excitement and kindness is contagious! One of the girls shared the Buddy Bench has a special place in her heart. Being new to the district last year, Peyton Smith knows firsthand what it is like to enroll at a new campus. She constantly goes
out of her way at recess and at school to make sure all kiddos are included and never left out, and is excited to provide such an amazing gift to her school and possibly the school district. Alexa Zielinski hopes new friends “will never be lonely again”. From December 3-14, the troop will be selling Buddy Grams before school at Cockrell Elementary for one dollar each as well as taking donations. Community members wanting to make donations are encouraged to contact Troop Leader Mickey Gunn at 214-478-8067. Since “kids that feel lonely will lose their recess because they don’t have no one to play with”, Fernanda Alatorre-Perez wants to help all fellow students through this effort with the Buddy Bench. Troop leaders Mickey Gunn and Mandy Goddard have enjoyed getting to know these young ladies the past few months and look forward to where their own journeys will take them as tomorrow’s women. With the school district’s growth and upcoming attendance zone changes, Brownie Troop 6207 does not know where it’s members will be attending school next year, but through this service project and their World of Girls journey, they will be excited to help reach out to new friends on the playground on any campus they may be attending. The girls will always look back at the benches they raised awareness and funds for as second graders, remembering that kindness and compassion can be shared through every phase of life in each location around not just Prosper, but the world! They have the ability to create change and make a difference in the world around them right now, right here, in the community they love… Prosper!

In His PRESENCE
The True Meaning of Christmas By Pastor Jack Graham
And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
—Luke 2:7–14
I love this passage of Scripture and the way it so clearly and beautifully reminds us of the true meaning of Christmas. When Jesus Christ came to us, a babe lying in a manger, He came as our Immanuel. God is with us. God is no longer a distant deity; God is no longer an unfathomable, unapproachable image. But God is life; God is flesh and blood; God is with us! And when we see Jesus Christ through the Scriptures and by the Spirit and by faith believe in Him, we see God. Jesus was born and became a man so that we, the sons of men and the daughters of men can become the children of God; so that we can be reborn. Jesus was born so that we may be born again! And we will never know the meaning of Christmas and the depth of the need of Christ until we realize the depth and the depravity of our own sin. So let us experience the fullness of His love and His joy and His peace as we celebrate this Christmas season, and let us share with the world that the Savior has come and is coming again! Love in the Manger
With no job, funds were especially tight this Christmas. “We can’t even afford a Christmas tree? But where will we put the few presents we do have for the children?” she cried with a heart-breaking sob. With a look of deep sadness, Daniel slammed out the door and she could hear him banging around in the garage. Oh dear, she lamented, I’ve only made things worse. Now he’s angry and breaking things in the garage. I know he is as disappointed as I am that we can’t provide a good Christmas for the children this year. He would take any job…if he could just find some work somewhere… Judy began to pray again for a job, for anything to make this Christmas less miserable. She could hear more banging and then Daniel came in carrying something he created. “Look honey, I took some wood scraps from out back and made a manger. And I went to the Christmas tree place and asked if they had any broken branches we could have for the

manger.” Daniel set the manger in the place where they had hoped to have a Christmas tree. Instead of scraggly straw, there were a few broken tree branches to soften the unfinished, rough boards of the manger. The smell of pine filled their tiny home and hope filled Judy’s heart. She ran to find an old, well-loved doll from her childhood that she had been saving, hoping to give to the tiny baby she was now carrying in her womb. She wrapped the doll in stained rags and laid the swaddled baby in the manger, tears flooding her face. “Oh, Daniel. It’s perfect! We can put the few gifts we made for the boys at the manger. I can go the Dollar Store and we can put candles above it. Thank you! It is the right message to send to the boys. We may not have much this year, but we are rich in the things that matter. We have each other to LOVE. We have Jesus.” On Christmas Eve, Daniel read the story from Luke 2 about God’s amazing LOVE. Daniel, Judy, Joshua, and Timothy let the richness of

God’s LOVE reach out from the manger to create their most meaningful Christmas. The next year, when Daniel had a secure job, he said to the boys, “Let’s go get the tree and let Mommy stay home with your new baby sister.” He was surprised when they answered, “We don’t want a tree, Daddy, we want baby Jesus’ manger for our presents.” May God reach out from the manger to LOVE you in ways you could never imagine this Christmas. he settlement of Good Hope began in the 1850’s. It is located in eastern Denton county about five miles northwest of Prosper, Texas. It is located just east of FM 1385 on Parvin Road about two miles. The settlement was first known as the “Rue” Settlement as the Rue family settled in the area in 1853. There were other families, such as the Ben Armstrong, Pete Hutcherson and Renison families. But Jacob and Lewis Rue (brothers) had the largest families so they called it the Rue Settlement. The families settled on both sides of Doe Branch as the land was fertile for farming and ranching.
frame building was built and was used for all three purposes. The Reverend B. R. Hodges organized the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. However, the exact date is not known but believed to be around 1854. The church became inactive in 1925 after it burned. Most of the members transferred their membership to the Presbyterian Church in Prosper. In 1875, a Baptist Church was organized near the home of Carroll Jackson near Doe Branch. The Presbyterians and Baptists took turns alternating every other Sunday using the meeting house until it was destroyed by a storm in 1878.
During this time settlers could apply to the Texas Land Office and receive grants for acreage. They normally gave grants in 160-acre packages. Jacob Rue’s three sons, Hiram, Benjamin and John, each applied and received their 160 acres. Later on, Ben Rue donated four acres to create the Good Hope Cemetery. In 1868, Ben Rue moved to Fannin County, Texas, and sold his land to Carroll Jackson, who had moved to the Rue Settlement from Missouri. Carroll Jackson also purchased some additional land from the Rue’s. One of his descendants, Brice Jackson, still owns the land.
The Presbyterians built a new church in 1878 near the Parvin store, blacksmith shop and some houses. At this time, the settlement was called Parvin, in honor of a local landowner, Henry Parvin. The Presbyterians used this church until 1925. After the meeting house was destroyed by fire in 1878, the Baptists moved a few miles eastward to Pleasant Valley and named their new church the Providence Baptist Church. The church later split and one group moved to Richland and organized the Richland Baptist Church. The other group returned to Parvin in 1885 and called themselves the Providence Baptist Church. They changed their name to Good Hope Baptist Church in 1894. The church remained active until it disbanded in 1974. Most members moved their membership to Prosper, Denton
Later, more families settled in the Rue Community. The early settlers made plans for a church, school and meeting house. A wood

or other local churches. The Good Hope-Parvin School was organized in 1878. One of the first teachers was Tolman C. Weeden, a nephew of Jacob and Lewis Rue. Jacob and Lewis had married the Weeden sisters. The school was active until it was closed in 1949 and the students had the choice of transferring to Denton or to Prosper School Districts. Over the years, some reference the Good Hope and Parvin communities interchangeably. The initial Good Hope community consisted of the cemetery, a Baptist church and the Good Hope School. The Parvin community was the general store (Parvin Store) and the Presbyterian church. Parvin was located about one quarter north of the cemetery. They were actually two different locations but were so close together that the communities have been used interchangeably.

Utah’s music industry has had a huge impact on the world. Musical groups such as Neon Trees, Imagine Dragons, The Used, The Killers, Royal Bliss, Panic at the Disco, and of course, The Osmonds all came from the Beehive State. Yet there are still hundreds of incredibly talented musicians that are just waiting to be discovered. 2014 was the first year of many that Warren Workman was able to put these awards together. Utah is planning to have the Utah Music Awards every year at the Covey Center for the Arts.

Don and I met in high school and married in 1987. We have been married for 27 years. Ashley is our only child, she is 17 years old and attends Prosper High School. Don’s passion is anything with two wheels; he has consistently raced bicycles or motorcycles during our entire marriage. I am blessed that I absolutely love what I do for a living and often forget that it is work and that I should take a break from it. We all three love to travel and see new places. We moved our family from Allen to Prosper in Jan 2008 because of the school district and the small town feel. We liked the smaller size of the high school in comparison to neighboring cities. We became involved in the community and quickly decided this was a place we would stay for a long time. When I decided to open my practice, I knew that I wanted to do so in Prosper. I wanted a practice where the staff could be involved with and supportive of the community, as well as enjoy a patient population that appreciates having a medical provider that takes pride in getting to know the patients and developing a relationship with them. I wanted a place where our practice could grow with the community and develop long lasting relationships. Our daughter will soon be going off to college and this practice provided me with a new baby to watch grow up in the community. Starting this practice was a vision of mine to provide quality, compassionate care to the
community and at the same time provide care for under-served patients. We are a full service family practice that accepts almost all insurances but we also offer discounted cash pay pricing for patients that don’t. As scary as it was to open my own practice as a Nurse Practitioner, I knew that this is what I was supposed to do. When I questioned the sani-
ing quality care. I am blessed with an amazing staff that is hard working and dedicated to our patients. Together we strive to serve the entire community. We are excited to be on the Aetna Preferred Provider list for the new school district insurance because this allows us to serve the community through serving the employees of the school district. We look forward to continuing to grow with this Town while taking care of the people that make this Town so special. *Our Mission is to be servant leaders with a faith based foundation of core values. We support the community through local charities and by offering services to the uninsured. We strive for Excellence by providing an atmosphere of compassion, integrity, and respect. We are committed to improving health and wellness by empowering and education patients to take control of their health.
ty of my decision, I would always turn to the scripture “For we walk by faith, not by sight” 2 Corinthians 5:7. My business philosophy is that we are servant leaders in the community and that my role as an employer is to be a servant leader to my staff. I believe that if I serve my staff the way I want my patients served, they will in turn serve the patients in that same manner. I know that it takes an entire team to run a successful medical office, and every member is equally important to provid-

When it’s cold outside and all you want to do is stay wrapped up in a cozy blanket, you’re in luck! Blanket scarves are one of the biggest trends right now. It’s possible to be warm and cozy and even leave the house for holiday errands and get togethers without feeling like you left your couch. Here are 3 totally appropriate ways to wear a blanket scarf outside of the house: 1. As a regular scarf. • How to: Avoid extra bulk by holding the scarf vertically in the air by one end. Pull it around your neck and keep pulling until the end you’re not holding hits around the middle of your torso. Loop the original end around your neck, and tuck the ends of the scarf under the middle loop so all the fabric lies flat. • Tips & Tricks: Because there is a lot of fabric with a blanket scarf, stick to structured pieces for the rest of your look. Adding a jacket like this blazer defines your waist and keeps your torso from looking too heavy visually. To balance out the top and create an hourglass shape, you could trade the skinny jeans for a trouser or bell bottom cut.
2. The completer piece. • How To: Drape the scarf over your shoulders to create a completer piece look. One edge of the scarf should lay across your neck, and the other should fall down your back, just like you would wrap yourself in a blanket. Tuck the ends under your arms and you’re set. This look is perfect for a warm winter day. If it gets cooler, throw one end of the scarf up and over your shoulder to transition it into a wrap. • Tips & Tricks: This is a bohemian look, so feel free to add a floppy hat to play up the boho chic vibe, but keep the rest of the look uncomplicated with a plain long sleeve tee or sweater. To switch up the look, add a pair of colored or coated jeans. 3. The infinity scarf. • How To: Turn any scarf into an infinity scarf by holding it like a rectangle in the air. Take the top right corner in your right hand, and the bottom left corner in your left. Bring them together and tie a small knot. Be sure it’s tight enough to hold, but not so tight the scarf will be an infinity scarf forever. Hold the scarf by the knot in front of you so that it makes a large oval. Place the knot over your head at
30 Live & PROSPER Magazine | December 2014
the back of your neck. Then, take the bottom of the oval loop and twist it once, placing the bottom of the loop over your head so it rests on the back of your neck. This is similar to how you would double a long strand of pearls to create a double necklace. Arrange the folds of the scarf until you like the way they lay. • Tips & Tricks: This trick works with all types of scarves and gives you a lot more versatility than buying an infinity scarf. Try different outfit combinations to create different looks. An infinity scarf works great with a cardigan like this, but it also goes well with a leather or utility jacket, or even a vest. Try tucking it into a puffer vest to streamline your look. Use these tricks to stay cozy and look put together over the holidays.

hen planning a holiday menu, two of the most important elements to consider are cocktails and dessert, of course. Consider a twist on two seasonal staples: eggnog and pie. With a little extra effort, and a pinch of pizzazz, these holiday treats go from mainstream to memorable. A prominent ingredient in both recipes, raw eggs are safe to use thanks to Safest Choice Pasteurized Eggs. Undergoing an all-natural warm water pasteurization process, the risk of salmonella is eliminated inside the shell, making the eggs the ideal choice for raw and gently cooked consumption. Elevate your eggnog Classic eggnog receives a makeover in the delightfully indulgent Caramel Apple Pie Eggnog cocktail. With the sweetness of apple pie filling and the smooth taste of homemade eggnog, the addition of dark spiced rum creates a rich, full-bodied flavor for a satisfying adult dessert drink. For younger guests, simply omit the rum for a sophisticated, yet fun, alternative to the average “kiddy drink.” Oh my, what a pie A holiday showstopper, treat your guests to Chocolate Peppermint Pie. Featuring a blend of white and semisweet or dark chocolate chips, crushed peppermint candy and whipped cream, the flavors and textures harmoniously combine to create a truly decadent dessert.
