t truly is the most wonderful time of the year! Homes are decked out with their prettiest and most festive décor, the kids are radiating with excitement and anticipation, and families are rejoicing in the holiday spirit. There is just so much to be thankful for and so many ways we are blessed this Christmas season. And as we get older, our favorite time of year becomes so much more than the decorations, presents and festivities. The true meaning of Christmas is love…love for our faith, children, family, friends and our town. When you are teaching your children about the true meaning of Christmas and blessing others, there are so many different ways within our community to achieve that. Our personal favorites are Cornerstone Christmas, Cops with a Claus and Prosper Ladies Association’s Angel Tree program. Each has special meaning, and each offers the opportunity to provide Christmas cheer and Holiday blessings to those in Prosper that need it most. It’s not always about those less fortunate…sometimes it’s simply touching a spirit in need or lifting a neighbor a prayer. That is what this season means to us. That is the love that was bestowed upon us, and that is what we are most thankful for. We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! Enjoy the time off with your families, indulge in holiday food and cheer, and relish the magic of this time of year through the eyes of your children. We wish you happiness, blessings and love!!

Eagles Nest

From the Desk of: Dr. Drew Watkins Superintendent, Prosper ISD

P

The Unsung Heroes of Prosper ISD

rosper ISD is blessed with phenomenal professionals (teachers, counselors, nurses, librarians, administrators, etc.) committed to the service of the students of our growing community, but it is important to recognize the unsung heroes of PISD… the paraprofessionals. Simply stated, our district CANNOT function at any level, much less an exceptional level, without this dedicated group of employees. You might ask, “Who are the paraprofessionals?” This group is made up of secretaries, receptionists, assistants, instructional aides, custodians, bus drivers, food service workers, police officers and the list goes on! These folks answer your calls, fulfill your requests, address your questions, keep our buildings clean and our grounds immaculate, safely get your kids from point A to point B, feed your children, assist in the classrooms, and secure our schools. In other words, these are the people who actually run the district while the professionals can focus on teaching

12

December 2015

and learning. We are truly fortunate to have such an amazing group of employees that care so much. If you have had a positive experience in PISD, it all started with your initial interaction with a paraprofessional. Please don’t hesitate to show your appreciation during this holiday season for any paraprofessional that brightens your day or provides a helping hand – their contributions should never be overlooked. In PISD, no one person is responsible for our success nor is any one person more important than the other. We truly have the best group of paraprofessionals teamed up with highly qualified professionals that work extremely hard every day to serve our great school district. We wish everyone a blessed holiday season - We are Prosper!

Remember When

When the train came into town

M

arch 17, 1902…it was an exciting time for Prosper when the first train came through town. A new age had begun for this part of Collin County. The steam engine, which was also referred to as the “Iron Horse” had made its way to Prosper. People had visions of changes for their lifestyles. Transportation would become easier because instead of simply walking, using wagons, or driving a horse & buggy, there was now a new mode of transportation. You could hop on the train and ride to Dallas, Frisco, Celina, Sherman, or wherever else you wanted to go. The cost was very reasonable for passengers. Of course, the further you traveled, the higher the cost. To travel to Frisco or Celina it was $ .10 and to Gunter was $ .15. It was a lot faster and a more comfortable ride. Another bonus was that more supplies and materials would be available without having to go to other areas such as Dallas or even East Texas. My mother, Leta Robison Hays, was born in Prosper in 1903 but the house she lived in was built in the late 1890’s. The lumber used to build it was brought to Prosper from Jefferson, Texas (East Texas) by wagon. It was at least a week’s trip one way, and one wagon could not haul all

14

December 2015

the lumber…meaning that several wagons were needed to hault enough lumber. Also, the roads and trails were not very smooth and it was very hard on the wagons. Many broke down and had to be repaired or replaced on the journey. In this new era, the train could directly bring lumber, clothing, bricks, ice, groceries, hardware, buggies and all of the supplies that were needed by the people. This was a great benefit, especially for the retailers, because the logistics of getting goods into their stores up until then was time consuming and very unreliable. So all of the stores, except for one, decided to move from Rock Hill to the site of the Train Depot in Prosper. The community of Richland only had one grocery store and the Prosper Post Office was located inside of it. So, once it moved to Prosper, there was basically nothing left in Richland. The only remaining store in Rock Hill was Mohon’s Store and it eventually went out of business. The building was torn down in 1973.

The people of Rock Hill, Richland and the surrounding areas benefited greatly from the railway and the founding of the Town of Prosper. It was a lot easier to get their groceries, clothing and supplies and they did not have to travel very far. They had a larger menu to choose from than they had in the past. Most of the families moved from Rock Hill to Prosper. There were also many families that moved from the other surrounding settlements and communities, such as Walnut Grove and Rhea’s Mill, because they wanted to be closer to the transportation depot. This began to create new jobs. Not only did the businesses move from Rock Hill, but new business began to come to Prosper. Richard “Dick” Barnes started a drayage company. He hauled freight from the dock at the train depot to the stores and the people, and delivered equipment to the farmers. He used a team of horses and a wagon and stayed very busy. Bricks, lumber and supplies were in great demand, especially in the early years, as the Town of Prosper was being built.

During this time period cars were very scarce. First of all, automobiles were just beginning and had not worked their way this far. Most people could not afford the car. In the beginning, people traveled from one place to another by walking, then by horse, then by horse and buggy/ wagon, and now by train. The evolution of cars was just beginning. Next month we will talk about the businesses that moved to Prosper from Rock Hill and a look at Prosper through the 1904 newspaper, The Prosper Times.

Community

Cornerstone Christmas

By Caitlyn Carpenter

C

ornerstone Assistance Network of North Central Texas is a faithbased nonprofit organization located in Prosper. Cornerstone’s mission is to unite with others to demonstrate Christ’s compassion by serving our neighbors in need. This is accomplished by sharing the Gospel and helping family units escape the cycle of need for good by providing resources, tools, and education. One of the ways we serve our neighbors is Cornerstone Christmas. On Sunday, December 13th, area churches and organizations will come together at Prosper High School to serve and love the families Cornerstone has been walking with over the last year.

At the event, we’ll share food and fellowship with 225 kids and their families, then entertain the kids while parents shop for presents and wrap them. We’ll also help families choose Christmas decor, stockings, new coats, socks, and underwear, as well as a giant food basket. Here is a note from a mother who participated in Cornerstone Christmas last year. “I just want to tell you what a wonderful day yesterday was! It truly is an amazing blessing for our family to have been a part of the Christmas program. You were so loving and caring towards our family. We are so very grateful for your kindness and generosity. The worries

16

December 2015

of not being able to provide Christmas have been lifted! Thank you for treating us with such dignity, and for welcoming us with open arms. There really aren’t words to describe how much we appreciate everything! Our kids had a great time at the event. It was a big treat and I know they felt welcomed and a part of the group of kids. You are wonderful and I’m blessed to have you as new friends. I know God has brought you in to my family’s lives and mine. Merry Christmas!” Please join us in making sure local families have a Christmas this year! We need donations of toys, food, coats, socks, underwear, scarves, hats, mittens and Christmas decor and would love to partner with you in any of these ways. There will be multiple toy and food drives located throughout

Prosper and surrounding areas. All of the Prosper schools are participating in drives, so be on the lookout for your children’s newsletters. You can visit our website cornerstonenct.org for more specific times and locations. You can also make donations online and sign up to volunteer. We want the whole community to be involved in serving our neighbors in need. This is our favorite day of the year and we would love to have you be a part of it!

Town Matters

A Look Back at 2015 The old saying that “a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” might be appropriate for us this year, as the long-anticipated expedition of growth and progress that Prosper has been preparing for took several major paces in 2015. Those of you who’ve been here as long as Lena and I have will undoubtedly attest to the tremendous burst of speed toward reaching our goals that we witnessed in 2015.

southwest corner of the park, and plans call for lighting the soccer fields on the southeast corner. The north end of the park will be transformed into another sports and recreation complex, complete with parking and comfort amenities. The Parks Master Plan includes Sexton Park, at First Street and Coit Road, which one day will become a welcoming entry point for our Town. Additional land was purchased next to the future Cockrell Park including wooded areas that will make beautiful public spaces when developed. Several community and pocket parks will be completed as part of residential development projects.

Preston Road, while drivable in 2014, saw its major completion this year. The reconstruction of Coit Road, First Street, Coleman Street, Seventh Street and the entire Rhea’s Mill area were either completed or begun in 2015.

And, while the Community Library is still sharing space with Reynolds Middle School, it has become the focal point for young and old. Reading programs and educational seminars dominate the activity there, much to the delight of parents and residents.

The West Side Street project, which will serve the residents and visitors of the burgeoning Windsong Ranch also saw significant beginnings this year. And, of course, Hwy 380 began its major overhaul in 2015. Accompanying many of these projects has been complementary work on utilities, water, wastewater, curbing and sidewalks. And, this year, we will join hands with Celina in agreeing on the need to build a vehicular bridge over the Burlington Santa Fe tracks at Frontier Parkway.

Downtown has not escaped our attention either. A new 50,000 sq. ft. Town Hall is being designed for construction in the central area, along with plans for future revamping of the entire downtown streetscape. Our professionally-managed Police and Fire Departments have grown right alongside our population, and the Town’s second fire station is now under construction. The limited space here prevents me from sharing more, but, rest assured, the Council and staff have been extremely busy this year, and will continue to be as we move forward. After all, we have a long journey ahead.

By Mayor Ray Smith

Ground was broken this year on a number of significant commercial projects, while plans for others were approved in 2015. Our Town’s first grocery store, which initiated construction this year, will open next spring. The Kroger at Preston Road and Prosper Trail will be joined by two other grocery stores in the near future. We’ll have our own Lowe’s home improvement store, outpatient surgical center, major car dealership, memory care center, retail department stores and Class A office buildings, all either under construction or approved in 2015. Frontier Park has undergone some major changes this year as well. Several practice fields have been constructed, lights have been added to the

Cops with a Claus It’s the season of giving, and our community is always very generous to those in need! For the 15th year in a row, the Prosper Police Department is again facilitating the Cops with a Claus program. This is the department’s way of serving families in need during the holiday season. There is an application process, but what sets Cops with a Claus apart from other programs in Prosper is that ANYONE can apply, and the money can be used to fill any need a family has. Sometimes the need is simply additional food for house guests, extra gas in the car or home repairs to prepare for the winter weather. This time of year is full of additional expenses, and sometimes families just need a “little extra” to make ends meet. Cops with a Claus is partnering with PISD and other community groups this year. If you or anyone you know is in need this holiday season, and would like to participate in the program, please pick up an application at Prosper Dispatch office. Applications are due back no later than December 11th to be considered and/or included. The goal for the 15th year of the program is to be able to help 15 families. Individuals, organizations and businesses can contribute directly to the program by making their donations at the Dispatch

20

December 2015

office, 110 W. Broadway, in downtown Prosper. There are many ways to make a difference this Christmas season…if you are able to, please consider Cops with a Claus! Prosper Police Reward Good Drivers 2015 marks the 5th year of the Safe Driver program. Between December 14th and 18th, officers will be on the lookout for drivers that are following all traffic laws, seatbelt usage and avoiding the use of cell phones in school zones. When “caught” being safe, officers will approach the vehicle, after it has STOPPED, to reward the driver with a $10 gift card. This is the department’s way of saying thanks those who follow the traffic laws and offer a gesture of holiday appreciation. This program is entirely donation based, and is a fun way for our department to reach out to the community in a positive way, while spreading holiday cheer with a little extra cash.

In Good Taste Prepping the Perfect Ham

A baked ham is the perfect centerpiece to any holiday celebration. Follow these tips to ensure your seasonal meal’s main course is a sensation with your guests: • Never thaw meat on the kitchen counter as the external temperature can rise above 40 F while the inside remains frozen. Thaw in either the refrigerator or in cold water. • Plan ahead to clean up; line your pan with aluminum foil. • To avoid dried out ham, cook at 325 F, allowing 20-30 minutes per pound. • Place fat side up. The melting fat will baste your ham. Turn over halfway through baking to avoid uneven salting. • Do not use sharp utensils when turning the ham. Valuable juices may escape if the ham is pierced. • Use proper cooking times and temperatures. Cooking to at least 145 F will result in juicy, tender meat. • Let ham stand for 15 minutes after roasting before slicing. • Completely cook ham until done. Avoid partial cooking and storing in refrigerator for later use, which can contaminate the meat. Breaking The “Rules” With Winter Whites “Playing dress-up begins at age five and never truly ends.” - Kate Spade Usually, when we’re young, getting dressed is fun! But somewhere along the line, it loses the magic and becomes a chore. One of the biggest reasons is most of us as women fear we’ll “get it wrong” or look like we tried too hard. The beauty of fashion is that there are “rules,” but they’re made to be broken to fit our lives, styles, and moods; meaning we have permission to wear the things we love- the pieces that make us feel beautiful and turn getting dressed into a highlight of the day! This winter, embrace the rule breaker in you and wear white. This traditional “rule” of style has been flipped upside down and draping yourself in luscious creamy hues is completely acceptable. Here are four specific ways to transform a bleak winter wardrobe into a winter wonderland:

Pair whites with other dark neutrals (black, cognac, and navy are especially sophisticated options) or any jewel tone. The rich colors anchor the white.

Mix and match whites and creams- or even soft grays for an unexpected combination.

Have a pair of white jeans? Try them with any of your favorite winter tops. (Plaid button ups and cozy sweaters make especially delightful pairs!) Winterize the combination with a pair of boots or booties.

mong the most treasured of holiday delights is, as the carol says, decking the halls. It’s the perfect excuse to pull out the bling and bring an aura of festivity and fun to your home, whether it’s for your personal enjoyment or setting the stage to celebrate the season with loved ones. All you need is a little imagination and some design inspiration to create an inviting holiday home, both indoors and out. Shopping at stores recognized for a wide assortment of quality furnishings, such as Pier 1 Imports, will give you a variety of decor that fits every style at an excellent value. Trim your tree beautifully and learn how to artfully incorporate wreaths and garland into your holiday home decor with Pier 1 Imports’ additional tips for a Christmas as merry and bright as you make it. A tree worth gathering ’round As the focal point of your holiday trimmings, your Christmas tree should reflect your personal style and make a statement about your holiday spirit. Start by choosing the right theme or look for your tree, from traditional to glamorous to fantastical. Ultimately, you can carry this theme throughout every element of the tree, from the ornaments to the gift wrap to other accents sprinkled throughout. To get started, select a pre-lit tree in the shape and style that best matches your vision: noble fir or pine, in slim or full silhouettes, the options go on. Be sure to spend some time fluffing branches for a more natural look, or choose one of Pier 1 Imports’ new memory trees with self-shaping

December 2015

Begin decorating by placing large elements. Weave garland through the tree branches first. Then start tucking larger ornaments and decor into the branches, placing evenly throughout. Fill in open spaces in the branches with smaller ornaments and floral picks. Keep adding until the branches are filled. Crown your tree with a decorative topper that fits your theme to add height and an extra personal touch. Adorn the base of the tree with a coordinating tree skirt or collar, and remember, you’re not quite finished until the presents are under the tree. Bundle your gifts with high-quality wrapping paper, gift bags, tags and bows that also fit your theme for a cohesive, finished look from top to bottom. Creative uses for traditional trimmings Don’t let your vision for a festive holiday home stop at the front door. Wreaths and garlands can actually bring a stylish touch to your holiday decor from the outside in. You can create a wintery landscape in your home by decking your halls, tables and more with inspired Christmas wreath placements. One idea is to nestle a hurricane in a berry wreath for a burst of color and texture; the candlelight will lend an air of cozy comfort. Home is where the hearth is, and a well-adorned mantel is a must. Make a stunning wreath the star of your fireplace display, and incorporate a supporting cast of berry garland and even a woodland creature or two to help make your look complete. Actually, repurposing garland in different locations throughout your house is another inventive way to infuse Christmas spirit. From staircases to bookshelves to headboards, cleverly installed garland sends a message that

you have a passion for the season. You can even use a shimmering Christmas tree garland as a table runner for a simple but elegant touch of joy. Add a natural touch with a garland crafted of pinecones, or go for glamour with golden accents. Find more ideas and garland to fit your personal style at pier1.com. Make your holiday merry and bright with a hint of starlight and sparkle. As you explore decorating ideas, remember to add a lighter touch with hanging ornaments, embroidered accents and candleholders. After all, Christmas is the perfect time to let your inner light shine. Decorating Room by Room Living room: Add a touch of frost to your room with inspiration from a wintery wonderland. Shining, snowy accents, along with plush pillows and a faux fur throw, create a warm, inviting space.

In His Presence

I

t’s the most wonderful time of the year. The tree is decorated and lit and our mantles are dripping with holiday greeting cards from family and friends. Christmas songs and carols fill the air and children sit wide-eyed staring at the presents. I recently overheard someone say, “Christmas is all about the children.” While there’s little more that I enjoy more than my children and grandchildren at Christmas time, this season is actually about one very special child. Many years ago God did something about our human condition that would put us right with Him forever. He sent His own Son into the world as a little baby boy. Luke’s account in 1:30-31 sets the stage as the angel Gabriel appears to Mary with the incredible news. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.” And it came to pass just as the angel said. Mary gave birth to that special little boy and named him Jesus. But he didn’t stay a little child. He began to grow in wisdom and in stature. He grew into a man who carried out his special mission flawlessly. He came from God and he would return to God, but not before changing everything in our world. It’s the story of Christ that focuses on why He came into the world. Perhaps the most succinct summation of His ministry is found in John 1:11. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…” He came in humble beginnings, lived a sinless life, was crucified and buried in a borrowed tomb. On the third day He got up from the grave, overcoming death, and ascended to the right hand of God where He is now making intercession for you and me. The Christmas story focuses us on how Jesus came into the world. The Christ story tells us why He came into the world. Together the stories remind us to celebrate and rejoice thankfully because He lives and reigns in OUR world, right here in our hearts. In this season we celebrate that God made a way through Jesus Christ for us to live everyday enjoying the great gift of salvation!! I encourage you to receive Him as a great present from God. Because, He’s what truly makes this the most wonderful time of the year.

T

his past summer, after a rare video audition, the entire Prosper Talonette Dance and Drill Team received an invitation to perform alongside fellow dancers from across the country at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade in New York City. Usually, dancers are invited based on their individual performance at dance camps and contests throughout the year which makes a team invitation that much more of an accomplishment!

Holiday In The City By Kari Roan

Talonette families paid for each Talonette's trip themselves which included airfare, a stay in the famous New York Hilton, tickets to see both the Broadway hit Hamilton and the iconic Radio City Rockettes Christmas Spectacular, meals, time for shopping and sight-seeing, performance costumes and performance team jackets. During perhaps the busiest season of the year for Talonettes, football season with its weekly halftime and pep rally performance polishing, the dancers had to learn two dances on their own using a choreography video delivered in mid-October. The Talonettes left the Saturday after school released for the holiday break, and once the dancers arrived in The Big Apple, they checked in to their rooms, grabbed a quick bite and went to their first of many three hour

rehearsals late into the evening. Their next two days were packed with hours of polishing, placing, and perfecting the movements and positions of the over 600 dancers who would precede Santa Claus in the big parade finale. Throughout the week, sprinkled in between rehearsals, the Talonettes enjoyed the opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of the city, including visits to NYC landmarks like the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and the 9-11 Memorial. Junior Lieutenant Morgan Dunlap said that her experience was loaded with "wonderful memories" and that she "loved every single second" of the honor to perform. Even though not all Talonettes attended this year because of prior commitments or other priorities, being invited to perform in this holiday tradition remains one of the highest honors the team has received. And, since dancers have the opportunity to earn the privilege of being invited individually at camp or contest, you might just see one or two Talonettes dancing on 34th street next Thanksgiving morning for Macy's 90th Thanksgiving Day Parade!
