| Letter From The PUBLISHERS | Find out more about Prosper,

Follow Us!

As we looked out over Frontier Park at all of the families gathered together for the Pride in the Sky celebration, our hearts were bursting with that pride! The crowd was brimming with a sense of community, connection and patriotism. I have never felt that Prosper Pride as deeply or felt more at home as I did that evening. Our little town, the place where everyone matters, celebrated our country’s freedom with grace and style. It was a wonderful way to kick-off the holiday weekend!

We couldn’t have been more impressed with the display of generosity from the people of our town who stepped up to “sponsor” our players in the softball game. Between the efforts of both teams and the other fundraisers at the event, it appears as though we were able to raise close to $8,000 between both charities. We are so thankful to live in a community that embraces the notion of giving back, and we are grateful to be able to share that philosophy with our children. This town supports one another, and that’s what sets us apart. Ask anyone what they love about Prosper and the universal answer is – the people. Compassion, generosity, affection and pride…that pretty much sums up the town we love so much. WE ARE PROSPER!!

Besides the fireworks display, we’d have to say that the Charity Softball game was our favorite part of the evening. Although a little “lop-sided” on the talent pool between the teams, it was great to get together with so many of our friends, leaders and community servants. Team selection will go a bit differently in 2015, and the Blue Team will have the opportunity to redeem themselves, so watch out Red Team!! Overall though, it was a great game, lots of fun and we raised a great deal of money for two organizations very near and dear to us – Cornerstone Assistance Network of North Central Texas and the Prosper Education Foundation. Our hope is that this event will grow exponentially over the next few years and be able to support these organizations in an even bigger way! Both do wonderful things for our neighbors and students, and we are proud to serve each of them.

Healthy Solutions Muscular Madness

By Dionna Black, B.S. Certified Personal Trainer and Wellness Coach at The Cell

Got Back Pain? Did you know that back pain is the second most common type of pain in adults? Second behind headaches. Having a strong back can help avoid or minimize the ailments of back pain. The back muscles make up the entire area behind our chest, from the base of our neck to the top of our buttocks. Its major function is to provide support for

the head, strength for the torso, flexibility and assists us with movement. The lower back enables us to bend forward and backward. With your doctor’s approval, perform these common exercises for the back following these dos and don’ts. And The Cell will see you soon as we review other muscles of the body throughout the year.

Dos

Sit with a straight spine/good posture. With a wide grip on the bar, lean back slightly with a straight spine to target pulling with your back muscles. Tighten your stomach muscles to help support your spine. Keep your shoulders down away from your ears. Breathe out while pulling the bar down to the top of your chest. Breathe in while returning the bar to the starting position. Kneel down on your hands and knees with hands under your shoulders and knees under your hips. With a straight spine, tighten your stomach muscles to help support your spine. Keep your neck straight, in neutral spine, looking down at the ground. Raise one arm straight out in front so that it is parallel to the floor. Raise the opposite leg straight out behind you so that it is parallel to the floor. Keep both hip bones facing the floor. Raised foot’s toes should face the floor. Hold for 3-counts and switch.

14 Live & PROSPER Magazine | July 2014

Don’ts

Sit hunched over.

Arch back using your lower back. Let your shoulders rise up during the exercise. Hold your breath during the exercise. Relax your stomach and let your lower back arch. Allow your neck to curve by looking up. Allow your hip bones to turn out, making your toes face out. Rush this exercise. Going slow encourages balance, which strengthens the core.

NTA Prosper Qualifies 11 for Nationals By Teresa Lee

The Gaylord Texan once again held the coveted Texas State Taekwondo Championships this year. Some 900 athletes and their coaches came from all over Texas in hopes of qualifying for the Taekwondo Nationals with either gold, silver or bronze medals. This year, NTA Prosper brought 12 athletes, nearly double the amount from last year and proved just as successful, qualifying 11 of its students in either sparring or forms. Owner and head coach at NTA Prosper, Master Michael Grant, opened its doors a little over 2 years ago. Each year, more and more kids are drawn to the sport of taekwondo. There are 2 sides to this wonderful sport: Traditional and Team. Both teach perseverance, self-control, integrity, respect, dedication and patience. Team taekwondo takes the sport to another level of athleticism. After all, taekwondo is one of the only martial arts sports that are a part of the Olympic Games. Team taekwondo athletes have an immeasurable amount of dedication, which is apparent in the amount of practice they do each week. These kids learn a lot about each other since they gather together 4 times per week. Even though they may not be the same age or belt level, they practice together, learning strategies from each teammate in the event that one day, they might encounter that type of fighter in the ring at a tournament.

16 Live & PROSPER Magazine | July 2014

Whatever Master Grant is teaching, it is obvious that he has the winning formula. Each student that he has the privilege to teach has enjoyed the sport immensely. Master Grant’s teaching has proven successful time and again, earning many of his students a place at Nationals. This year is no exception. The following is a list of NTA Prosper athletes who succeeded at this year’s Texas State Taekwondo Championships, and earned themselves a spot at Nationals in San Jose, California later this summer. Congratulations NTA Prosper athletes! And good luck at Nationals! | Remember When |

EARLY PROSPER: BEFORE THE TOWN OF PROSPER WAS FOUNDED ‘THE SHAWNEE TRAIL’ by Bill Hays

Most people do not realize the importance that cattle played in the early history of Prosper and western Collin County. The oldest north-south cattle trail in Texas was the Shawnee Trail and it came through the western part of Collin County. Large scale cultivation of land did not start until the 1880’s and the best way to make a living, prior to that time, was to raise cattle. In 1869 Henry Parvin, whose family settled in Rock Hill in 1846 and later moved to the Good Hope/Parvin area, sold 4,ooo head of cattle. Cattle was a big business prior to large scale farming which began in the 1880’s. The Shawnee Trail started in deep south Texas and traveled through the San Antonio area, Austin, Waco, Cedar Springs and entered into Collin County at Frankford and continued through Lebanon, Rock Hill, Richland, old Celina and into Grayson County and crossed the red river at Preston Bend. The trail then went through Oklahoma, Kansas and to the railheads in Missouri. The trail split at Fort Gibson, Oklahoma and in Missouri the railheads ended in places such as Sedalia, Kansas City, St. Louis, Independence, and Westport. The other branch ended up in Baxter Springs and other points in Kansas. In the Midwest this was sometimes call the “Texas Trail”, “Kansas Trail”, “Sedalia Trail” or simply “The Trail”. In western Collin County the trail basically followed the trail used by the buffaloes and Native Americans. There is a ridge that runs through western Collin County where the elevation is higher on one side (eastern side) than on the other side. The buffaloes and Indians took the higher side because it provided more cover, better protection by the elements and there was more

18 Live & PROSPER Magazine | July 2014

water. The current Coit Road is basically the old Shawnee Trail through Collin County. Preston road is on the lower side of the ridge and it follows the ridge through Collin County and into Grayson County. The highest point in Collin County is on the ridge in Prosper near the intersection of Preston Road and Hays Road. When the Shawnee Trail first came through western Collin County in the 1840’s there were few settlers in the area. Prior to 1850 there were not many settlers west of McKinney in Collin County. There were a few but widely spread. As people began to move into western Collin County, towns and communities began to develop. Along the trail towns such as Frankford, Lebanon, Rock Hill, Richland, old Celina and Alla Hubbard began to grow. Farmers and ranchers began to purchase land along the trail and the trail boss had to get permission to use the watering holes (springs) along the trail. At night many of the herds would bed down at the watering hole. Some of the springs along the trail in Collin County were at Frankford (on the Collin/Dallas County line), the Clark Farm near Lebanon and the Collinsbrook Farm (Henry Barlow place) at Rock Hill. The trail boss would normally pay the landowner with a calf or two from the herd for use of the water and a place to stop for the night. The Shawnee Trail was a major traffic route both directions. It was not only cattle but was a north-south route for freighters (wagon carrying goods and supplies), wagon trains with settlers, drovers returning home from the cattle drives, stage lines, etc. The people traveling both ways would normally get to-

gether at these watering holes and exchange news from the north and south. This is one of the ways people would find out what was happening up and down the trail.

On one of the cattle drives one of the drovers became very sick as they were bedded down at the Collinsbrook Farm. The drover could not continue with the cattle drive. There was a minister and his wife, William Barnett and Elizabeth “Eliza” Finley Wear, who had settled on a farm just east of the Collinsbrook Farm near Walnut Grove. The Wear family took in this sick cowboy, cared for and nurtured him until he finally died. He was the first person to be buried in the Wear Cemetery. The cemetery is located on First Street east of Prosper and is active today. It is near the Walnut Grove Cemetery which is located at the intersection of First Street and Custer Road. Reverend Wear was very active in this area and started the sway back union of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Walnut Grove in 1852. In the early 1850’s problems began to develop for cattle on the Shawnee Trail. At times there were attacks by bands of hostile Indians. Also, local farmers in Missouri began to turn back the cattle drives. There was a disease that the local farmers called “Texas Fever”, known as tick fever. This is a serious disease to most cattle but the Texas longhorns were immune. However, they carried it and infected other cattle along the trail. This continued to get worse and Missouri formed vigilance committees to stop the herds. The Missouri legislature passed a law which banned diseased cattle from entering the state. This law did not solve the problem though, because the longhorns were not actually diseased. They just carried it. Some herds continued through Missouri while other herds diverted through Kansas. When the Civil War came along and there were virtually no cattle drives. In 1866 approximately 250,000 head of cattle were headed north on the Shawnee Trail. Some made it through, some had to turn back and others faced problems with the local Kansas farmers, attacks by bands of hostile Indians and the Kansas Jayhawkers. They would steal the cattle and wound or kill the drovers.

As the cattle moved up from south Texas sometimes it would be joined by other drives from other areas of Texas that were headed to the railheads in the Midwest. Actually there were some ranchers in northern Mexico that joined in these cattle drives. They had no place to market their cattle so they joined the south Texas ranchers at the beginning of the Shawnee Trail. There were hundreds of thousands of cattle that travelled this trail from the 1840’s through the early 1870’s. There were no cattle drives during the civil war. This trail was the most important and most traveled north-south route during this period from the 1840’s through the 1870’s.

The Texas cattlemen realized that there had to be a new trail because of all the problems. So they decided to use the “Chisholm Trail”. The Chisholm Trail started in south Texas and was basically the same as the Shawnee Trail except it diverted below Dallas and headed northwest into Fort Worth and toward Wichita Falls. It went through Oklahoma and into the Kansas railheads in Abilene, Kansas and Dodge City. Although the cattle were gone on the Shawnee Trail after the early 1870’s the trail was still a major traffic system for the north-south routes to and from Texas. At this time the trail was carrying more settlers, freighters and wagon trains than ever before. As the railroads began to build into Texas this trail began to decrease in traffic flow as people began to use the rails for passengers, freight and supplies.

demonstrated skills necessary to earn a college scholarship. However, reaching these goals must be accomplished within the proper framework by instilling character, self-esteem, confidence and sportsmanship with the young athlete. An aggressive desire for victory combined with the procedural and graduated development of softball skills through exceptional coaching and advanced training techniques is of paramount importance. Nevertheless, everyone should realize that, fast-pitch softball is only a game and is the forum we use to help our athletes mature into responsible adults.

In 2014-2015 season, 05’Texas Glory will compete in 10U tournaments 1-2 times per month as they continue to improve the skills of individual players and to develop the attitude and teamwork required to become a highly competitive team. They are based in North Collin County, but our players come from all across the Metroplex and beyond. The goal is to teach players how to love and respect the game of softball, while having fun and learning the fundamentals of the game and the value of teamwork. The measure of their success comes from the development of individual players, not by the score of any particular game. As players and the team as a whole continue to develop, so will the ability to compete at progressively higher and higher levels of competition, while always keeping sight of the TEXAS GLORY organization’s overall goals. The TEXAS GLORY Softball Clubs routinely compete in the most prestigious events in the country. The coaching staffs strive to attract players and parents with these common interests: All of Texas Glory’s on-field coaches are dedicated volunteers who invest many hours and some of their own resources to fuel their passion and provide opportunities to their young atheletes. Coaches meet regularly for round table discussions and share ideas and strategies. These dedicated coaches and volunteer staff facilitate each athelete’s growith by conducting challenging practices and scheduling the highest level of competitive activity available. Texas Glory Fast-Pitch Softball Mission Statement: 1. Promoting the game of fast-pitch softball. 2. Creating an environment in which players can reach their full potential and achieve the self-confidence and positive self-esteem necessary to be successful both on and off the field. 3. Developing individual skills and team tactics to enable players and/or teams to compete at the national level. 4. Assisting all players in obtaining D1 College scholarships. The Texas Glory organization exists for the specific purpose of developing a competitive youth fast-pitch softball program whose goals are to develop players capable of competing at the highest levels in the country with the

Greg Dyer, Owner-Operator Prosper Family Owned and Operated Since 2009! 972.625.7378 GreenPestGuys.com Greg Dyer is the owner and operator of Green Pest Guys, whose headquarters are located right here in Prosper! Greg and his wife Angie have lived in Prosper for 5 years now and in Collin County for over 15 years. They are the parents of three teenage girls – Samantha and Natalie, both 15 and Susie who is 13. Angie is a nine year veteran real estate agent with Prosper’s RE/Max Performance Group and Greg is involved in the community through the Prosper Rotary Club and serving on the board of Bethlehem Place for the last two years. They are active participants in their local Christian church and model their businesses and customer service on these time tested values. Angie is a 5th generation Texan, so Greg’s Oregon roots had no chance at living anywhere else after they were married 22 years ago. Why Prosper? What we love about living and working in Prosper is the small town feel, the friendly people and the positive family environment in which to raise our girls. There’s just something neat about going to town and seeing people you know at the post office or Cotton Gin, waving and visiting. We love Prosper schools and have been so grateful for the dedication of the PISD teachers and staff. We both grew up in small towns and feel Prosper captures that same comfortable feeling we had as kids.

How did you get into the Pest Control Business? It’s a long story, but after 12 years in high tech corporate world, I decided to follow my entrepreneurial roots and start my own business - I just didn’t know what kind of business to start. My brother-in-law ran a large pest and lawn company in Houston and offered to be my mentor and trainer. Everyone will be happy to know that the State of Texas does not allow just anyone to become a pest control operator overnight. They require a 1 year apprenticeship with a current license holder and only then can you sit for the licensing exam yourself. So 6 years ago, I started my apprenticeship with my brother-in-law and then obtained my pest and termite license. My firm, Green Pest Guys was born 5 years ago and at that time, green pest control was still very new. Manufacturers were just starting to produce green pesticides. Knowing that there would be more and more people thinking green in the future and caring about what chemicals were being sprayed around their homes, we choose to take the green route. We have really enjoyed finding like-minded people and providing a solid pest control service without the chemicals. Green Pest Guys shares your concern for cleanliness and safety by dedicating ourselves to provide a completely child- and pet-friendly service that fits within your budget. What we’re really delivering is peace of mind. If we haven’t met you already, we look forward to it!

PRIDE IN THE SKY 2K14 Prosper’s First Annual Pride in the Sky Celebration was a huge success!! Residents, friends and family poured into the Frontier Park Complex on July 3rd, ready to spend the evening celebrating our nation’s freedom. As they entered the park, they were greeted by close to 20 “show” cars and trucks that had registered for the Pride in the Sky Classic Car Show. Attendees also had the opportunity to visit over 20 different games, activities, vendors and sponsor booths. It was a true American celebration, complete with a water gun station, watermelon eating contest, hula hoop contests, water balloon toss, face painting, balloon animals, delicious food and a Charity Softball game. It appears as though we were able to raise close to $8,000 from the event – benefiting Cornerstone Assistance NCT and the Prosper Education Foundation. The evening was then topped off with Prosper’s first ever Independence Day fireworks display, sponsored by Live & PROSPER Magazine. It was a wonderful community event and we’d like to thank everyone for coming out to celebrate with us!! WE ARE PROSPER!! Photo by S

The Pride in the Sky Celebration was made possible through the contributions of our event Sponsors. We’d like to give all of them a big THANK YOU and ask that our readers show them your support and appreciation as often as possible! It was a true team effort and each contributor played a significant role in pulling off such a successful event. We would also like to thank all of our volunteers who helped make the evening run smoothly. Julie Shivers (Town of Prosper) and Casey Foster (PISD Transportation) were relentless in their efforts to transport each shuttle rider safely. In addition, much appreciation and gratitude to our Prosper Fire and Police Departments for ensuring the safety of our attendees. Fire Marshall Bryan Ausenbaugh, Chief Ronnie Tucker, Chief Stuart Blasingame, Chief Doug Kowalski and Chief Gary McHone were instrumental in the planning and safety of the event. Finally, a HUGE THANK YOU to our Parks Department, under the direction and leadership of Matt Furr and Casey Knapp – y’all nailed it! The pride you have in your work shows…the facility looked INCREDIBLE and your crews were on top of everything. We are so appreciative of your efforts to not only keep our parks beautiful, but for all of your hard work to ensure that the softball game was possible after all of the rain! It takes everyone working together to ensure a great event, and we think our team was INCREDIBLE!!

SWEET SUMMER TREATS

By Heather Reynolds

If your fondest memories of homemade ice cream are those of sitting on the ice-cream freezer while grandpa churned it, then you’re just like me! Today’s homemade ice cream may be prepared differently, but these recipes churn up delicious flavor with little effort! Many homemade ice cream recipes require cooking a custard base, but these easy varieties are made from sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, whole milk and rich, sweet flavors. We use the Cuisinart 2-Quart Automatic Frozen Yogurt, Sorbet, and Ice Cream Maker, and it makes velvety smooth ice cream every time. Enjoy!

St rawberry

1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk 1 (5-ounce) can evaporated milk 2 tablespoons sugar 1 1/2 cups whole milk 1 (16-ounce) container fresh strawberries or 1 (16-ounce) package thawed frozen strawberries 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1/4 teaspoon salt Whisk first 4 ingredients in a 2-quart pitcher or large bowl until blended. Cover and chill 30 minutes. Process strawberries, lemon juice, and salt in a blender or food processor until smooth. Stir into milk mixture. Pour milk mixture into freezer container of a 1-quart electric ice-cream maker, and freeze according to manufacturer’s instructions. (Instructions and times will vary.) Remove container with ice cream from ice-cream maker, and place in freezer 15 minutes. Transfer to an airtight container; freeze until firm, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

T wn Matters

Celebrate National Parks and Recreation Month! By Julie Shivers, Recreation Services Coordinator

E

very year, people across the country take time during the month of July to recognize the important role that parks and recreation programs play in our national consciousness, and Prosper is no different. At the Town Council meeting of Tuesday, July 8, Mayor Ray Smith and the Council will officially proclaim the month of July as National Parks and Recreation Month in Prosper. “We’re extremely excited about the proclamation, since this is an area where the Town is most visible to residents and visitors,” says Julie Shivers, Recreation Services Coordinator for the Town. “When our residents begin thinking about what to do, how to enjoy the outdoors, or when they are entertaining visitors, their thoughts invariably include visits to our parks.” This year, the national celebration is using the theme – Out is In! “It’s a play on words, of course,” says Julie. “Being outside is the ‘in’ thing to do. What we try to do is make being outside fun, by creating opportunities for enjoying our parks. We’re also constantly on the lookout for programs that capture the attention of adults and the imagination of kids.” The Out is In campaign is a countrywide effort to get people to enjoy the outdoors in virtually every city and town in the US. Sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), the purpose of the campaign is to encourage everyone to visit their city parks, embrace active lifestyles and improve their overall health. Summer offers the perfect opportunity to create healthy habits for residents and their children by getting out to a park, trail, playground, swimming pool, natural area or other public space. The Town of Prosper offers numerous recreational opportunities to explore, including over 170 acres of developed park land; the Town’s signature Frontier Park; the community-built Windmill Playground; Main Street Park; Pecan Grove Park; smaller neighborhood parks like Boyer Park, Eagles Landing Park, Hays Park, Whitley Place Park, and Town Lake. These, along with multiple hike and bike trails, form the basis for the parks system.

30 Live & PROSPER Magazine | July 2014

“And, with major developments and subdivisions coming into Town, the number of neighborhood parks will necessarily increase,” she said. “All of these parks and recreation opportunities enrich the lives of Prosper residents, and provide natural spaces to play and exercise.” National Parks and Recreation month is also the perfect time to investigate the many programs being offered to adults and kids to take advantage of the Out is In campaign. Place these events on your calendar: • Week of July 7-11: One free Camp Gladiator class at Frontier Park on Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 8:15 a.m. or Tuesday and Thursday at 5:15 a.m. • Week of July 14-18: One free FIT4MOM class at Frontier Park, Monday, Wednesday, Friday at 9:30 a.m. • Week of July 21 - 23: One free Zumba class at Lighthouse Fellowship Church, Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Also, it’s not too late to register for summer camps! “We have indoor and outdoor activities for most every age group,” she said. “Our camps range from sport and dance activities to Brickz 4 Kids Lego Engineering camps.” For the full calendar of July’s Out is In activities register for camps and stay abreast of the latest news and information by visiting the Parks and Recreation page on www.prospertx.gov and be sure to like us on Facebook.

Whether you’re packing for the beach or choosing a few pieces to add to your wardrobe this summer, pick items that work for a variety of occasions: a day at the pool or beach, running errands or sightseeing, or dressed up for a dinner out. Put a casual shirt dress, tunic, or maxi dress to work as a cover-up for a day on the water. Exchange your flip flops for sandals, add a few simple accessories and a lightweight sweater, and you’re ready for a dinner date.

Another great item that doubles as a cover up is a relaxed fit button down. Don’t be afraid to borrow from the men! If your husband has an old button down he doesn’t wear anymore, reuse it for yourself. Linen or jersey pants and a maxi skirt are the perfect summer wardrobe chameleons. Pair them with a simple tank or tee for the pool, or style them with a hat and a pair of flat sandals for running errands or a day of sightseeing. Headed on a dinner date? Opt for a statement necklace, a pair of wedges, and a clutch to dress up the look.

32 Live & PROSPER Magazine

A pair of shorts is another great choice. Look for a length that hits about mid-thigh. This is the most universally flattering cut. Whether you opt for distressed denim, a neutral linen, or a fun print in cotton or jersey, you can pair shorts with a tee or tank and flat sandals for the beach, and dress them up with a blouse and fun accessories for a night out.

“Quality is the Difference”

If you’re planning to add a new piece to your closet, consider a sarong, or large scarf. There are several great tutorials available online that show you how to create multiple looks (halter and bandeau dresses, an open vest look, etc.) with this one piece. Wear it as a scarf on the plane, and it can double as a light blanket if you get chilly.

Don’t forget about accessories! A straw fedora provides the perfect shade for lounging by the pool or a day of sightseeing. It’s also great for hiding the fact you didn’t have time to wash your hair that morning. One of the best space savers is to invest in a tote that will work as a beach bag and double as your carry on for the plane. Paired with your current closet, these pieces give you tons of remixing options for the summer. They also do double duty on a trip and can help you fit everything you need in a carry on. To see a complete week’s worth of tropical outfit ideas using these pieces, visit www.greaterthanrubies.net.
