Blessings November…the time of year for traditions, family and counting our blessings. Crisp, chilly mornings, bright cool days, and clear cold nights. That wonderful time of year to decorate our home with harvest décor, burn our favorite scented candles, snuggle up beside a crackling fire and bake anything and everything pumpkin! The Thanksgiving holiday is sometimes rushed through on the way to Christmas…but I hope that everyone takes some time this month to truly cherish what all you have and be thankful for all of your blessings. Blessings are different for each of us. For some, it’s their children, parents, family and faith. For others, it’s their job, their career, their home, the things that they work so hard for. And for many, it’s all of these combined. We live in a very blessed community, we are lucky in so many ways. This is the time of year to truly look around at all you have, and consume yourself with GRATITUDE. While you may not have all that you want, my bet is that that you have all that you NEED. Everything outside of that is a bonus! As you begin to prepare for your family gatherings and your Thanksgiving feast, we hope that you take a moment to cherish this wonderful time. There’s so much to do, so many lists to prepare, groceries to buy, pies to bake, recipes to try. Make this Thanksgiving one to remember… slow down and rejoice in the time with your loved ones. Start a new tradition, or rekindle an old one. Let the kids get involved and make some amazing memories. Give thanks and be blessed!

eartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) are on the rise in our population. Processed foods in our diet, a hectic lifestyle and being a little heavier than we used to be can all contribute. In addition to causing discomfort, long-standing reflux can increase the risk of changes in the tissues of the esophagus that can eventually lead to premalignant changes or even cancer of the esophagus. For many people, dietary and lifestyle modifications and medication can control the symptoms. For those that do not respond to these changes or who do not want to remain on medication for life, a surgical procedure can provide safe, permanent correction of the anatomical problem that results in acid and food being regurgitated into the esophagus. In most cases the procedure can be performed laparoscopically, using a camera and long instruments through several small incisions (less than 1 inch) on the abdomen. A weak or dysfunctional gastroesophageal valve is repaired by wrapping the stomach around the lower esophagus, a procedure called a fundoplication. This prevents acid and stomach contents from coming back up into the esophagus while still allowing food to pass. Most commonly, a single night in the hospital and a short period of eating soft foods after surgery is all that is required. Patients are up walking after surgery and can return to work in 5-7 days. Those that perform heavy lifting as part of their work will need to return on light duty until the healing process is complete, generally around 4 weeks. The vast majority of patients do not need acid reducing medications after surgery and only require mild pain medications for a short time. The most common observation my patients report is having to learn to chew more thoroughly to ensure that food passes easily through their repaired esophageal valve. The repair is permanent, though very rarely, it can loosen over many years and may need revision.

Meet Steve Duffy, M.D.
At North Star Texas Surgical Associates, Dr. Duffy specializes in the entire spectrum of general surgery, including Heartburn/reflux surgery, Robotic surgery, Repair of all types of hernias, Gall bladder removal, Breast surgery, Upper and lower GI surgery, Surgical oncology, Thyroid and parathyroid surgery and Hemorrhoid and anorectal surgery. He has delivered dozens of lectures on general surgery, complex hernia repair and antireflux surgery to medical professional and patient groups and is fully credentialed on the da Vinci surgical robot for single and multi-port procedures. A fellow of The American College of Surgeons, Dr. Duffy was named the 2005 Stjepcevich Scholar in Medical Research for work on insulin resistance in burn patients, served as Administrative chief resident for the 2nd largest residency program in the country, and has authored 13 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals in fields of cell biology, trauma and burns. Originally from Wylie, Texas, Dr. Duffy was the first in his family to attend college, receiving his undergraduate and graduate degrees from UT Dallas, and then graduated Magna cum Laude from UTMB Galveston. Dr. Duffy pioneered da Vinci robotic surgery at US Military’s flagship hospital, San Antonio Military Medical Center and is also an Operation Enduring Freedom vet, who served at Bagram Air Force base, Afghanistan from 2011-2012. At that time, Bagram was the busiest trauma hospital in the world. After completing his education and military career, Dr. Duffy has returned to North Texas. He and his lovely wife DeAnna, who were high school sweethearts, now reside in Prosper with their darling little girl Ella.
Why choose Dr. Duffy as your surgeon?
When selecting a surgeon to treat your reflux it’s important to find someone with a thorough understanding of the disease and not merely a technician who knows how to perform the operation. GERD is a complex spectrum of disease and there is definitely not a one-size-fits-all approach to treating it. What I believe I can bring to the table is a body of experience in treating reflux, from the mildest cases that do not require a procedure all the way up to treating patients who have undergone one or multiple prior operations and are still having symptoms. While serving in the Air Force, I established myself as having expertise in this field and received referrals from all across Texas and the southwest for active duty service members, their families and retirees with reflux disease. Most patients are in their 20’s to 50’s but I’ve treated as young as 15 and patients in their late 80’s with this disease.
An Operation Enduring Freedom Vet with a Servant Heart
Getting accepted to medical school provided the perfect opportunity to serve in the military. I was born in Canada but became an American in the mid 1990’s, electing to give up my Canadian citizenship – I wanted to live the rest of my life totally committed to my country. One month before starting medical school at UTMB in Galveston, I took the oath and became a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force. 9/11 happened a few months later and I feared I would be required to pause my medical education to serve overseas. Fortunately our military medicine infrastructure was robust enough that I completed medical school and 5 years of residency without interruption. I had the privilege of treating the best soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines in the world while in Afghanistan in 2011 and 2012. The volume and magnitude of injuries we treated was staggering but I was well prepared by a grueling surgical residency in San Antonio with very exacting and experienced teachers. I’m proud to say that not a single US service member that made it to us alive passed away under our care in Afghanistan, though a few did later succumb to their wounds in Germany or back in the U.S. We also provided humanitarian surgery to countless local Afghan citizens for tumors, burns or other diseases. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to treat some of the most unfortunate victims of poverty and war. I also had the opportunity to participate in a medical mission in Guatemala in 2009. For 10 days we performed all kinds of surgeries on some of the poorest villagers in the western hemisphere. These kind, beautiful people often walked days to seek treatment for their hernias, tumors, gall bladder disease or c-sections. One patient walked 10 miles back to our hospital the day after I removed his gallbladder to deliver a shirt that his wife made as a token of his gratitude. It was a humbling, wonderful experience I hope to repeat. 6898 Lebanon Road, Suite 103 | Frisco, Texas 75034 | 972-335-7874 | DrSteveDuffy.com | McKinney Office Coming Soon Thanksgiving | WeAreProsper.com

Dr. Drew Watkins
Superintendent of Schools Prosper Independent School District
Prosper ISD – Major Decisions on the Horizon As we continue to mention, our greatest growth is ahead of us. Light Farms Elementary School is on schedule to open in August 2015. Although we are excited about the opening of another new school, a new school also means new attendance zones. It is the goal of the district to finalize new attendance zones AND make a determination on the grade configuration of grades K-8 moving forward by spring break of 2015. This is a self-imposed deadline, but we are hopeful that we will be able to make the necessary decisions by mid-March. In the near term, we might always have a need to have transitional configurations until another school can be opened to absorb growth, but the Board will be making the final determination on the long-term grade configuration. Originally, the District projected the following schools to accommodate the projected student growth: Elementary Schools (K-5) 20-25 Middle Schools (6-8) 10-14 45,000-50,000 Students* High Schools (9-12) 4-6+ *Ultimately depends on zoning/development of the ISD If a different grade configuration is ultimately selected, the actual number of the above mentioned schools would be affected somewhat. I also want to take brief moment to answer some of the most often asked questions that we continue to receive. 1. What is the current capacity of Prosper High School? Our goal continues to be that our high schools will serve 2,000-2,200 (the top end of 5A); however, the current capacity of PHS is 2,500+. Moreover, PHS WILL slide up to 6A before high school #2 can be constructed. The hope is that we will have the bonding capacity (as result of commercial development) sooner rather than later to build HS #2 by 2020. 2. Is there an update on when the new football stadium or natatorium (swimming pool) will be built? Unfortunately, there has been no change on these projects. The District will build these facilities as soon as possible without interrupting school construction, which will require rather significant commercial/business development through the school district. 3. Even though the attendance zones will be redrawn with the opening of a new elementary school, will my child be able to finish their elementary career at their current school? Unfortunately, given our growth projections, this will be highly unlikely. Please know that we are sensitive to maintaining some sense of stability, which is why are also considering the location of elementary #6 while we are establishing attendance zones for elementary #5 (Light Farms) in an effort to minimize movement. Please reference the FAQ document on the Prosper ISD website for these and many more questions (updated quarterly).

Cops With a Claus gift card program enters 14th year Charity program depends solely on community generosity
PROSPER (October 24, 2014) One of the more significant, high-profile programs that benefits from the Prosper Police Department’s yearround fund-raising efforts is the Cops With a Claus campaign, says Assistant Police Chief Gary McHone. “Police officers and dispatch personnel work on various fund-raising program throughout the year,” he said. “Among the more spirited programs helped by that effort is the Cops With a Claus program. The program has been addressing the needs of some of our neighbors since 2001.” The Cops with a Claus program, administered and run by the Police Department, provides assistance to families in financial need by presenting them with a gift card that can be used in grocery stores, department stores or a variety of merchants. The program always coincides with the Christmas season. “Members of the department gather funds through fund-raisers and by soliciting and accepting financial donations from residents, organizations, businesses and anyone else wanting to help,” he said. “We then use that money to purchase gift cards that are distributed to families in need.”

Applications for the assistance will be distributed and a group of community volunteers will select the families to receive the holiday grants. The amount of the each grant will depend on the amount of financial support collected, but the goal is to raise $500 for each recipient family. Several Prosper ISD schools participate in the program by helping identify potential recipients. “The generosity of individuals and businesses in Prosper and the surrounding area helps us provide these small gifts, and we’re hoping this year is as successful as in years past. Of course, we never fail to express our deepest thanks to everyone who helps make this possible,” said the Chief. Tax-deductible donations in any amount will be accepted until Dec. 6. Individuals, families and businesses may drop off their donations at either Prosper Town Hall, 121 W. Broadway, or at the Police Dispatch office, 101 S. Main. Mailed contributions should be addressed to Cops With a Claus, Prosper Police Department, P.O. Box 307, Prosper, TX 75078. Checks should be made out to Cops With a Claus. “The giving season of Christmas fills us all with the spirit of sharing,” he said. “And, the Cops With a Claus program lets people share their good fortune anonymously. It’s a very special way we express the statement that Prosper is a place where everyone matters.”

Cornerstone Christmas – Our Favorite Day of the Year By Caitlin Carpenter
Cornerstone Assistance Network of North Central Texas is a faithbased nonprofit organization located in Prosper. Cornerstone’s mission is to unite with others to demonstrate Christ’s compassion by serving our neighbors in need. This is accomplished by sharing the Gospel and helping family units escape the cycle of need for good by providing resources, tools, and education. One of the ways we serve our neighbors is Cornerstone Christmas. On Sunday, December 14th, area churches and organizations will come together to serve and love the families Cornerstone has been walking with over the last year. At the event, we’ll share a meal with 200 kids and their families, then entertain the kids while parents shop for presents and wrap them. We’ll also help families choose Christmas decor, stockings, new coats, underwear, and socks, as well as a giant food basket. Here is a note from a mother who participated in Cornerstone Christmas last year. “I just want to tell you what a wonderful day yesterday was! It truly is an amazing blessing for our family to have been a part of the Christmas program. You were so loving and caring towards our
20 Live & PROSPER Magazine | November 2014
family. We are so very grateful for your kindness and generosity. The worries of not being able to provide Christmas have been lifted! Thank you for treating us with such dignity, and for welcoming us with open arms. There really aren’t words to describe how much we appreciate everything! Our kids had a great time at the event. It was a big treat and I know they felt welcomed and a part of the group of kids. You are wonderful and I’m blessed to have you as new friends. I know God has brought you in to mine and my family’s lives. Merry Christmas!” Please join us in making sure local families have a Christmas this year! We need donations of toys, wrapping supplies, and food, and would love to partner with you in any of these ways. There will be multiple toy and food drives located throughout town. Most of the Prosper schools are participating in drives, so be on the lookout for your children’s newsletters. You can check our website at www.cornerstonenct.org for more specific times and locations. You can also make donations online and sign up to volunteer. We want the whole community to be involved in serving our neighbors in need. This is our favorite day of the year and we want you to be there.

In His PRESENCE
An Attitude of Thanksliving By Pastor Jack Graham
Thanksgiving is not just a day in the year, but it should be a way of life for the believer. I like to call it Thanksliving. As a matter of fact, the great Apostle Paul spoke of Thanksliving in Thessalonians 5:18. And when he spoke of this, he spoke not out of pleasure, but really out of pain. Paul was facing the end of the road and he was experiencing deep persecution for his faith. And yet he was able to say, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Jesus Christ for you.” Scripture tells us repeatedly that we are to give thanks. We should give thanks in all things. We should give thanks for anything. We are to live in a state of perpetual praise. We are to always give thanks and praise the blessings of the Lord. The psalmist said in Psalm 34:1: “I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” And so I say with Paul, “Give thanks in all circumstances.” It is that choice to rejoice. It is that attitude of gratitude. But also, it is the altitude of gratitude because gratitude will lift us to heavenly places. When we lift Him up, we get lifted up. Gratitude will change your perspective on life! You can choose to grovel in the dust or you can choose to elevate yourself into the heavenlies, into the presence of God. And I believe since we’re going to spend all of eternity in His presence, praising Him and serving Him, it’s a good idea to start practicing right now! Thanksgiving in praise enlarges and enriches our lives. When we praise God, the heavens and the earth are opened up before us. I love how the poet Annie Johnson Flint put it so beautifully: As we offer our small rejoicing for the love that surrounds our days, All the wonderful works of Thy goodness open before our gaze. And through gates of our narrow thanksgiving we shall enter Thy courts of praise. Dr. Jack Graham is pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church, which has campuses in Prosper, Plano and Dallas.

Remember When

Navo/Elm Ridge Community
I
n last month’s issue, we mentioned there were three other communities that were instrumental in the development of the Town of Prosper in addition to Rock Hill and Richland. We discussed Rhea’s Mill last month, and this month we will discuss the Navo/Elm Ridge community. Next month, we will focus on the Good Hope/Parvin community.
The community of Navo is located on Fishtrap Road just west of FM 1385 in Eastern Denton County. It is about one mile south of Highway 380. In 1847, Mr. Thomas Navo purchased land on which the community of Navo was founded. The community was in an area bordered by Little Elm Creek to the west, Doe Branch to the east, Salt Branch to the south and Parvin/Bryan Roads to the north. Navo was a thriving community in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. They had a cotton gin, blacksmith, grocery store, a church and school. Agriculture was the main source of income and cotton was the major crop; therefore, the need for a cotton gin. Many people think that the store on Highway 380 was the original Navo Community. Alexander M. Bush built the first store in Navo. It was on the north side of what is now Fishtrap Road about one-half mile west of the current FM Road 1385. When the store was first built, it was the only store between McK-
inney and Denton. Mr. Bush sold the store to a Mr. King, who owned the King Wholesale Grocery Company in McKinney. In 1931, Mr. King sold the store to J.B. (Jerry) Johnson and Leonard Harper. They sold the store to W.A. Johnson, Jerry’s brother. He did not like running the store so he sold it back to Jerry. It was called the Navo Cash Grocery Store. Jerry Johnson built a house just east of the store. Between the house and store was a blacksmith shop. After Jerry Johnson sold the store and it was torn down, Marshall Taylor purchased the land and built a house. A storage shed now is located on this property. In 1884, a post office was established in the Navo Store and A.M. Bush was the postmaster. The post office was closed in 1907 and moved to Aubrey, Texas. Also, in 1884 a school was built with two rooms. It was located just west of the store and on the south side of Fishtrap Road. It was called the Elm Ridge School because of the grove of elm trees located just west of the school. In the beginning, the grades went from the 1st through the 11th grade. Some of the teachers were Mr. Bruce, Miss Olga Silk, Mrs. Heburn and Mrs. Virgie Smotherman. Over time, the grades were reduced from the 1st through the 8th grade. The students above the 8th grade had to go to school in Prosper or Denton. The Elm Ridge School was closed in 1949 and students went to Prosper or Denton. In 1949 the building

and land was sold to the Elm Ridge Methodist Church for one dollar and other considerations. The old school building was used as a community center until 1970 and was torn down in 1983. The Elm Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church, south was organized in 1886. In the beginning they used the Elm Ridge School House as a meeting place. The church purchased an acre of land adjacent to the school and eventually the school and church both built new structures next to each other. The Elm Ridge Methodist Church (name was changed earlier from the Elm Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church, South) was destroyed by a tornado in 1919 and was rebuilt by 1920. In the 1960’s the name was changed to the Elm Ridge United Methodist Church. In 1986 the church built a new structure on the land where the old school house was located. The church is still in existence today with a small congregation but is drawing visitors from the communities of Paloma Creek and Savannah. Both of these communities were a part of the original Navo Community in the 1800’s. Thanks to Melvena Noles for contributing to this article. he first time I visited Prosper, I knew that there was something special about this town. It was an exciting mix of potential and growth combined with a sense of commitment to maintaining its unity and charm, which is what has made it a unique and desirable location to so many in the first place. My wife Courtney and I grew up together in a very small Texas town. We were married 8 years ago after we both graduated from Texas A&M University. Courtney taught high school English while I completed four years of dental school at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas and a 30-month orthodontic residency at Saint Louis University. During that time, we had our first daughter, Madeline, and we never lost sight of our desire to raise our family in a place that felt like home, where we could really make an impact and be active in the town and within our children’s schools. That’s when we discovered Prosper. It seemed like the perfect place to grow our family, and naturally it felt right to us that I establish my practice here as well.
is the confidence that comes with a beautiful smile and the freedom to do so without self-consciousness or embarrassment. I believe that every person and every smile is unique and needs to be treated as such. That’s why from the moment you first call to schedule an appointment to the time your treatment is finished, our team here at Bodine Orthodontics is committed to providing exceptional, individualized, expert orthodontic care for every patient. We also offer many modern options like Invisalign, Invisalign Teen, Insignia lingual braces, clear braces and more to fit you or your child’s lifestyle and give you that customized smile that you deserve.
We’ve been settled now for almost two years—Bodine Orthodontics officially opened its doors in March of 2013, and we have loved every minute. We’ve been actively involved in many community events; it’s been great getting to know the people of our town at the Prosper Summer Series movie nights, the Prosper Ladies Association Boots and Bling event, and we were honored to be a part of the town’s Dr. Trevor & Courtney Bodine I feel like my practice first Fourth of July celestyle and philosophy mesh well with the pulse and values of the town: bration this summer. With CAITLIN SKIDMORE
It’s easy to look at our closets and feel like we have nothing to wear, even if we have overstuffed drawers and items with the tags still on them.
Here are a few quick tricks to reframe how you look at your closet and help you turn what you have into something new. 1. Dress up a casual outfit. Choose a casual outfit you find yourself grabbing before it even makes its way from the laundry basket to the hanger. Add a completer piece (cardigan, jacket, or blazer) to instantly look more pulled together. Three pieces (top, bottom, and completer piece) always looks more polished than two (top and bottom). Use bolder accessories, like a statement necklace, sparkly earrings, or colored or patterned shoes to add visual interest to your look. The opposite also works. Dress down a work or night out look by reworking it with more casual pieces, such as a jean jacket, flats, or a scarf. 2. Put a fresh spin on a tried and true look. Think of a favorite go-to look, and ask yourself these questions: 1.1. What is it about this look that I like so much? 1.2. How can I change it up with accessories or styling? 1.3. What other pieces do I have that I can use to recreate it?
30 Live & PROSPER Magazine | October 2014
Use your answers to create new outfits with: 1.1. The same pieces, but new accessories; 1.2. Similar pieces (like a different button up and/or pair of pants) but the same accessories; 1.3. Similar pieces and new accessories. For example, trade your favorite tee and jeans for a different tee and a pair of colored jeans finished off with some bold accessories in place of your everyday jewelry. 3. View Pinterest as an inspiration rather than letting it make you feel like you need a whole new wardrobe. Use the questions above to recreate a pinned look you love. What do you like so much about it? How can you create your own version of the outfit? Use the pin as a jumping off point to be creative with your closet. Reframing how you think about your closet seems simple, but it can help you feel grateful instead of frustrated, give you energy instead of drain you, and help you let go of a few things you know you won’t wear again, giving you more physical and mental space. If you have a few pieces in mind to clear out, this is the perfect time of year to donate them to an organization that will give them to another person who could use a blessing! Cornerstone NCT is getting ready to give 3 outfits per person to 200 local kids and their parents, so clean out a few items and drop them at the Cornerstone Donation Center. All donations are tax deductible. http://cornerstonenct.org/donation-center.html Caitlin Skidmore is a Style Coach and is the author of Greater Than Rubies (greaterthanrubies.net), a life & style blog, where she teaches women how to remix their closets. She also works as the Program Development Coordinator for Cornerstone Assistance Network of North Central Texas, based here in Prosper.

T wn Matters A Growing Community Finds Itself at a Crossroads Prosper is at a crossroads, not unlike the situation 100 years ago when residents banded together to incorporate, seeing the unquestionable value of creating an administrative structure to guide the fledgling Town’s growth. “Today, Prosper is among the fastest growing cities in the nation,” says Finance Director Kent Austin. “And with that growth, come decisions about managing it wisely. In that sense, the decisions made a century ago still resonate today.” Incorporation as a municipality was a major step for any community. It meant that its residents clearly saw the value in nurturing such a cooperative venture, guiding its growth, agreeing to finance the necessary infrastructure and enjoying the benefits of that endeavor. During the budget-development period which just ended with the passage of a Town financial plan that included maintaining the same tax rate that was passed in 2007, and no increases in water, sewer or sanitation rates, Town officials managed to fund: - 12 new firefighters for a new west Prosper fire station; - 3 new police officers and one new police sergeant; - New lighting for a multi-use corner of Frontier Park; - Funding for park repairs; - Partial funding for critical west side road improvements; and - Extending Coleman Street from Prosper High School to Preston Road. “These items illustrate the three priorities of the Town’s 2014-2015 budget public safety, park development, and street repair,” said Austin.
HIGH GROWTH DYNAMIC
New Residential Construction More Population Increased Demand More Capital Projects
Expanded Tax Base and More Population Increased Demand for Services, Programs, Facilities and Infrastructure More Staff, Equipment and Capital Projects
More Capital Debt
More Capital Debt Increased Annual Debt Service
Increased Debt Service
Less Revenue for O&M (Service, Programs, Staff and Equipment)
Less Revenue for O&M
More Property Tax Revenue Required to Support Expanded Tax Base
Recognizing the inescapable needs generated by Prosper’s rapid growth, the Town Council was guided by its acknowledgement of the “high growth dynamic,” an algorithm that towns and cities in Prosper’s enviable position experience. “The high growth dynamic has been part of the landscape since towns and cities were established and began to experience growth,” said Austin. “And, as Prosper continues to attract homebuyers, this and future Councils will be faced with its consequences.” The high growth dynamic demonstrates the direct relationship homebuilding has on how a city provides essential services and the tax revenue required to support those services. As new residential construction occurs, the tax base expands and population grows. With more population comes increased demand for services, programs, facilities, and infrastructure. More police and fire personnel are required, the equipment they use becomes a necessity, other capital projects like water and sewer lines, roadways and the manpower to maintain them must be accommodated. This, in turn, leads to more capital debt, which increases debt service. Servicing the debt diminishes the revenue available for operations. Naturally, more property tax revenue is needed for operations to support the expanded tax base. “The central challenge of the high growth dynamic is to be in front of it, not behind it,” he said. “Fortunately for the residents of Prosper, the 2014-2015 budget captured the revenue from an expanding tax base without raising any of the rates.” To emphasize the three priorities, officials point out that expenses related to police, fire, and EMS make up over 40 percent of the budget. The second highest expense area is Parks and Recreation at 14 percent, followed by Streets and Building Inspection at six percent each. Significantly, when a Prosper property owner looks at their property tax bill, a full two-thirds of it is destined for the Prosper ISD and only 21 percent is for Town services. Collin County takes the remaining 13 percent. “Prosper is fortunate to benefit from rising property values and sales taxes. With careful planning, these and other revenues will support budgets that pay for the services needed to accompany its inevitable growth,” he said.
