Fall is a great time of year…boots, hoodies, pumpkins, football and Homecoming! This year’s Homecoming theme is “Branded by the Eagle…Prosper Left a Mark on Me”…and that statement couldn’t embody the pride, school spirit and community support of Prosper ISD any better. We are a community of excellence and tradition, and our leaders work tirelessly to develop a culture of Eagle Pride that can be felt throughout the town. What we have in our district is unique and we cherish it. And most likely, our students don’t even realize how extraordinary that culture is…that it isn’t something that you find at every district in America. Or ANY district, for that matter. They just know that they are loved and supported. That’s the mark that I want left on my kids. The one that shows that they are important, regardless of what they believe or what activity they are participating in. The one that reinforces the belief in them that they can do whatever they choose as long as they are willing to work hard and be their best. The one that supports them and loves them for who they are…when they are soaring high, and even more importantly, when they are faltering and imperfect. There are so many things that I could say about our PISD leadership, but this is what I love most about each of them. They give our students the most precious gift they have…their time. There is rarely an event, game or activity that they are not in attendance for. And they aren’t just there for show. The fact is, they don’t want to NOT be there…they don’t want to just hear about a student or team’s accomplishments…these are their kids, and they want to be there to experience it, just the same as we as parents want to be there for our own children. We are a family, all 9,000+ of us. And we believe in these words…WE ARE PROSPER, WE ARE ONE!

Each year the prosper historical society honors all veterans with a program on or near veterans day in november. This year we will have as our speaker the honorable judge keith self who is the judge of collin county. He is a very interesting speaker and also a veteran as he served in the united states army. The date is thursday,

It is also the board room of the prosper independent school district and the prosper independent school administration building. The historical society keeps a list on prosper veterans and we honor all the veterans at the veterans day program. Our list is incomplete and we need each veteran to contact the prosper historical society if you have not already signed up. You can contact bill hays at billhays@ prodigy.Net to sign up or you can call him at 972 569-9062. Halloween tips from the Prosper Police Department: -Children should stay within familiar areas and surroundings. Parents should establish a route for children to use in Town. - Children should use flashlights and stay on sidewalks and wear reflective clothing. - Children should cross the street at corners or crosswalks and not between parked cars. -Motorists should drive slowly and watch carefully for children. General Safety - Community groups, area businesses and others host Halloween parties. Parents should consider these as a safe alternative to door-to-door "trick-or-treating" for their children. CHILDREN SHOULD: - never go into homes - stay on the porch when asking for treats. - avoid homes that don't have their outside lights turned on. - never talk to strangers or get into strangers' cars vehicles. - travel in small groups and be accompanied by parents or an authorized adult chaperone. - know their home phone number and their parents' cell phone numbers. - bring home treats before eating them so parents can inspect them. When children get home, parents should inspect all candy and other treats before they are eaten. Discard all unwrapped or loosely wrapped candy or fruit. ADULTS SHOULD: - give and accept only wrapped or packaged candy. - keep porch lights on and their driveways illuminated. - ensure that their walkways are cleared of debris on which children may trip and fall. - cut into fruit, such as apples, to make sure they do not contain any foreign objects. - throw out anything doubtful. - Parents, children should never carve pumpkins. Instead, they can help by drawing faces with markers, while a parent does the cutting. Supervise older children carving pumpkins. - If you have any questions about suspicious looking treats, contact the police department at 972-347-2226 or 911 if an emergency.

HalloWeen safety is critically importaNT It’s not easy picking my favorite season, but fall is pretty high among the contenders. Not only do temperatures become pleasantly bearable, but there’s something in the air during fall that doesn’t exist during any other season. Summer may have a strong hold on young people who enjoy being outdoors, and out of school, and winter has a certain allure for many who enjoy skiing and other winter sports. Spring is full of new life and growth, and many people look forward to it. But fall has so many wonderful events and activities that families can enjoy together. Of course, there’s football at the high school, college and professional levels that highlight the fall season. Friday nights, Saturday afternoons and Sundays are filled with the pageantry and prominence of football. Also during this season, churches and community groups put on their
fall festivals, using lots of fall colors and symbols in their celebration. And, while we, in the immediate area, don’t have the luxury of seeing our trees turn colors, a short drive can reveal some breathtaking foliage. Here in Prosper, neighborhoods, HOAs, and communities hold National Night Out block parties, cookouts and parades, uniting together in sending a message to criminals to stay away. Families in these neighborhoods hold these functions and invite police and fire officials to join in. Fall also brings us other important national holidays that traditionally bring families together. There are few holidays that do that any better than Thanksgiving. It’s a special time for families to gather around the table and express their gratitude for the many blessings they enjoy. And, of course, there’s Halloween. Typical Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, decorating, carving pumpkins
If you’re suffering from any of the following: into jack-o'-lanterns, apple bobbing, visiting haunted houses, playing pranks, telling scary stories and watching horror films. In many parts of the world, Christian religious observances surrounding Halloween include attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead. Local churches often host trunk-or-treat events, keeping the younger kids from running from house to house collecting candy.

But, there are still many kids who enjoy the fun of trick-or-treating in our communities. Like all parents and grandparents, Lena and I have a special interest in making sure kids are safe during Halloween. I reached out to Assistant Police Chief Gary McHone for some helpful tips for keeping kids safe during the Halloween. He said kids’ costumes should never obstruct the child’s vision. Make-up is preferable to masks, but masks with large eye holes are OK. Bright colors and reflective material are best for costumes. Large, flapping and billowing costumes could be dangerous and cause tripping. Sneakers are better than floppy shoes. And, above all, kids should not carry toy weapons, unless it’s a flexible sword or knife. Chief McHone provided other Halloween tips that appear in the accompanying sidebar. Please read these and take them to heart. Fall is a beautiful season, and we certainly want it to remain our favorite! 2015 Community Guide | WeAreProsper.com

he average student has 73 teachers throughout their educational career. We are fortunate to have outstanding teachers and staff in Prosper ISD. The Prosper Education Foundation established the Star Polisher Award this year as a way to recognize teachers for the tremendous amount of work they do behind the scenes each day for our students. Every month the campus leaders will select one outstanding teacher who has made a difference in the lives of students, and that’s where the PEF “Prize Patrol” steps in! On September 16th, the PEF “Prize Patrol” marched into each campus, armed with goodies for the Star Polishers. Balloons, an award, certificate and $100 gift card to Office Depot were granted to each recipient…but the true gift was in the love that the students had for their teachers, and the love and appreciation that the teachers expressed for the recognition. It was a great day to be a PROSPER EAGLE, and the Prosper Education Foundation can’t wait to award the October winners!! I’m a St ar Polisher By Leah Becks
I have a great job in the universe of occupations. What do I do? I’m a “star polisher”. It’s a very important job. If you want to know how important, just go out at night and look at the stars twinkling and sparkling. You see, I’m a teacher. The stars are the children in my class. My job is to take them in - whatever shape they come - and shine and buff them and send them out to take their places as bright little twinkling beacons in the sky. They come into my room in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes they’re bent, tarnished, dirty, crinkly, and broken. Some stars are cuddly, soft, and sweet. Some stars are prickly and thorny. As I buff, polish, train and teach my little stars, I tell them that the world cannot do without them. I tell them they can do anything they set their minds to do. I tell them they can be the brightest, shiniest stars in the sky and the world will be a better place because of them. Each night as I look at the sky, I’m reminded of my very important job and awesome responsibility. I go and get my soft buffing cloth and my little bottle of polish in preparation for tomorrow and for my class of little stars. Jeremiah Horn Cemetery In the last Remember When article, we discussed the Zion Cemetery and its relation to the history of Prosper before the town was founded in 1902. This month we will discuss the Jeremiah Horn Cemetery. The Horn family cemetery is located inside the Prosper town limits. It is located on Custer Road about two miles north of Highway 380. It is in a clump of trees on the west side of Custer. The cemetery was deeded by Charles Wesley Horn, a son of William Jeremiah and Cynthia Doughtery Ledbetter Horn. The date was September 12, 1888. There are thirteen graves in the cemetery.

1. The mums are BIG y’all. If you are not from the South, you may be shocked at the size of a Homecoming mum. Yep, they’re big. Lots of ribbon, glittery stickers, feathers, rabbit foot, charms, LED lighting and stuffed eagle heads…the more the merrier. Just embrace this. Also – there are lots of different kinds of mums. The white ones are for Seniors. The boot mum is for groups like the Talonettes who want to participate in the mum wearing but can’t really dance with that albatross around their necks. Finger mums are fun especially with the elementary school crowd. There is even a mum for guys (called garters), which is worn on the arm – these are getting bigger every year too. All in good HOCO fun! 2. Don’t miss the Homecoming PARADE. Back in the day, the whole town shut down at noon for the parade and EVERYONE came. This year’s parade is Wednesday, October 14th. The parade route starts on Church Street by Reynolds, goes west on Broadway, then north on Coleman. Get there early and if you want a ton of candy stand toward the beginning to middle of the route. Bring a pillowcase for the candy collection (which can honestly be recycled for Halloween trick or treaters). If you don’t want a bunch of candy to trade it later to your dentist for a toothbrush, pick your spot toward the end of the route. People bring chairs and blankets to set up along the road.

This is fun – the floats are creative and it’s just some good ole family fun. The parade ends at the High School for a community wide pep rally. 3. Don’t skip the pep rally. Nobody puts on a pep rally like Prosper – NOBODY! It’s worth it to attend and there’s usually a food truck or two out front of the gym if you’re hungry or thirsty after the parade. Expect traffic to be heavy – just pretend the P on your car stands for PATIENCE and go with it. It’s lots of fun and the younger kids get to start learning the PHS chants like the big kids! 4. Friday Night Homecoming Lights is FUN! Get your ticket early and arrive early on game night to take in all the sights and sounds of HOCO. Homecoming court is sweet with the PHS girls and boys chosen by fellow students as their HOCO 2015 court.

Spirit Wear and Dress up theme days. For parade, pep rally and game night wear – get some Spirit Wear. You can order the official homecoming t-shirt, pop into a local shop for a little bling on a t-shirt or Prosper logo hat or golf shirt for the men in the house. During HOCO week, if you happen to see teenage kids around with crazy hair or mismatched socks, don’t worry that’s not a new fad, it’s a theme day at school. Check with your child’s campus for a list of theme days, it’s pretty fun to see the creativity.

Closet MVPs We all have similar pieces in our closets: different versions of tanks, tees, short and long sleeve tops, completer pieces (like cardigans, jackets, and blazers), shorts, pants, skirts, and dresses. There are a few of these pieces that are extra versatile, and whether you shop your closet to find them or it’s been a while since you shopped and you want to start over, checking off this short list will give you a variety of outfit options. Look for these 5 Most Valuable Players in your closet, on your next shopping trip, or a combination of the two:
Pants that fit really well; close to the body, but not tight. For a casual outfit, jeans are perfect. (A dark wash is classic and dresses up well.) When it comes to work, a mid-rise, trouser-cut pant is the most universally flattering. Look for a pair that fits at the widest part of your leg and drops straight to the floor. This idea also works with trouser jeans, as pictured.
28 PROSPER Magazine | October 2015
Create a variety of looks by layering tops underneath, wearing a completer piece over top, or belting the dress. (For most shapes, belting above your natural waist will create the most flattering silhouette.)
A completer piece like a cardigan, blazer, jacket, or even an open button up. Looking for extra versatility? A blazer can be dressed down with jeans and a tee or up with a blouse and dress pants or a skirt. Here, it’s styled with a basic tee and jeans, but the statement necklace and heels create a look that lands somewhere in the middle. A shift or sheath dress.

A lightweight silky button up. The thin fabric works best for layering. Try it under a shift dress, tucked into a skirt, or worn with a completer piece like this cardigan.
A tee or blouse that drapes well. A neutral color, like black, can be dressed up or down easily. Or, go bold with a bright color, like this red silk option.

In addition to the annual scholarship, which supports a graduating senior planning on pursuing a career in education, the foundation is also designed to offer scholarships to the children of Prosper firefighters, police officers and educators who pass away prematurely. onfidence, passion, humility, character and class. These are just a few qualities that Miss Prosper Teen USA strives for and admires. Kiara Wartell has been selected to represent the town of Prosper in the upcoming Miss Texas Teen USA pageant in Houston, Texas this November. This will be Kiara’s first pageant and believes that in winning the crown will help her further serve Texas and her local community. Kiara is a straight A student with a GPA of a 4.0. She has been selected as top underclassmen for Principles of Business, Finance and Marketing in recent years. She has been a youth leader for the past 5 years along with being selected as one of the few youth leaders to speak a message at Covenant Church’s Legendary youth service. This past summer she was chosen to be apart of Nordstrom’s fashion ambassador program. In addition, she qualified and competed in the AAU National Track and Field Championships in Virginia in the 800m and the 4x400m relay. Kiara sees competing in the Miss Texas USA pageant as a unique opportunity to not only represent Prosper and Prosper Pride, but to serve God and bring glory to His name. Kiara’s platform and passion is helping those in need and in particular her fellow Texans. She volunteers with Cornerstone North Central Texas, a nonprofit organization that helps families break the cycles of poverty that impedes them from moving forward in life. Kiara specifically helps
organize donations such as clothes, shoes and toys at their donation center located in downtown Prosper. She also donates time in their consignment shop, the Attic. Kiara believes that it is important for a community to help those in need, but more importantly she believes God has plan and a purpose for everyone’s life, which begins with the dignity of the human spirit. In becoming Miss Texas Teen USA, Kiara wants to see major progress made in the fight to end intergenerational poverty in America. Kiara is incredibly grateful to God for all her many blessings and her supportive family. She would also like to give a huge thanks to all her sponsors and supporters: Mathnasium, Functional Health Centers, Minty Fresh Dental & Orthodontics, Diana Smothermon, Prosper Bank and its President, Bob Lowrimore, Joanna Coleman with Scentsy, Matt Cox with State Farm, Mesa’s Restaurant and 380 Outfitters. Once again, Kiara is more than thankful to have this opportunity to serve others and is honored to have this chance in representing Prosper. If you would like to support Kiara in her pursuit of Miss Texas Teen USA, please contact her at: kwartell@live.com.

In His Presence Sitting with my friend, I took a deep breath, silently asked God to forgive my anger and instead of giving advice, I said, "Let’s pray and ask God what He thinks." I prayed for help to say only what He wanted me to say. Words rolled out of my mouth that I hadn’t planned. Words based on Scripture, not my emotions. Words of kindness, not contempt. So much better than my thoughts. Oh my goodness — I can count more times than not when I’ve blurted out words that should never have been said, especially in the heat of the moment. Do you know what I mean? Mercy! But, let me tell you something — if we consistently read God’s Word and pray, the most amazing thing will happen: We’ll follow the Holy Spirit’s leading, even when our human desires want to do or say something different.
A Wrecked Marriage Saved By Sharon Glasgow
"A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is eventempered." Proverbs 17:27 (NLT) "I can’t STAND my husband. I’ve had enough; it’s over. I’m finished with this marriage, Sharon. I’m done … DONE!" Kate yelled as I held the phone away from my ear. When she stopped to take a breath, my friend started sobbing. I could hear her children fighting and her baby screaming in the background. Before I could respond, Kate asked, "May the kids and I come over for lunch? I need your help. I don’t know what to do." Everything in me wanted to say, "NO!" We were renovating our house and using my bedroom as a makeshift kitchen. I hadn’t been grocery shopping and had no idea what I’d feed all our kids, the two of us and the construction crew. Despite my hesitations, I said, "C’mon over and …" Her phone disconnected before I finished the sentence. Rummaging through a box, I found lunch — oatmeal, walnuts and maple syrup. I boiled water on a tabletop burner, wiped 15 bowls that were covered in construction dust and prayed for God to help me help my friend. I knew if her marriage was going to be saved, it wouldn’t be because of my words. It’d be because of God’s. Kate didn’t seem to notice the messy house. She had tunnel vision and only saw her wrecked marriage. After we ate lunch, the kids played outdoors while my friend and I stayed inside. I let her talk for over an hour. As she told me her story, I thought to myself, Oh my! I can’t imagine being married to this man either! He’s an inconsiderate jerk. At the end, Kate looked at me and asked, "Well, what do you think?" I paused before answering. My flesh wrestled with my spirit big time. The more she talked, the angrier I became for her. Part of me wanted to come up with mean jabs for her to say back to her husband. Or encourage her to give him the silent treatment. Or go yell at him myself! But I knew none of these "solutions" would help heal Kate’s heart or her marriage. Do you remember the old saying, "If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all"? Scripture tells us a similar thing in today’s key verse of Proverbs 17:27, "A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered."
38 PROSPER Magazine | October 2015
I’m thankful I paused and invited the Lord into my conversation that day. Kate said, "I’m going to need more prayer to get through. Everything you prayed convicted me. I do love him and have renewed hope that God is going to turn this around." Notice she didn’t say she would need tons of conversations, clever words or plans to retaliate. Just a short prayer based on Scripture revived her. We have continued to pray together, and her wrecked marriage is being restored. The next time you’re tempted to give someone a piece of your mind or spout long-winded advice, pause first. Invite the Lord, through prayer, to lead your thoughts and guide your few words. Lord, help me not to lean on my own understanding but in everything acknowledge You so that You can direct my words, thoughts and actions. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. (www.proverbs31.org/devotions)
