ports. The art of competition. The thrill of victory. And sometimes, heartache of defeat. The triumphs and the pride. The honor and responsibility. Whether it’s football, volleyball or any of the other countless activities available in Prosper, there’s just nothing like being a part of a team. It’s indescribable what happens when everyone works toward the same goal...when everything aligns; when the good of the team comes before the good of the player. A team is more than the coaches, more than the players, more than the fans. A team is all of these pieces working together as one unit, with one goal and one dream. And there’s no better team than our PROSPER EAGLES!! It takes each and every member of the team performing at the highest level to excel. And in Prosper, we expect excellence. Excellence on and off the field…excellence in performance, character and spirit. These are Prosper values, community standards. Our coaches instill in athletes the notion that if you do things the right way, with honor, hard work and integrity, you will be successful. Athletics isn’t only about winning or losing…it is about carrying yourself with pride and dignity. It is about developing young athletes into capable, strong adults with the tools to be successful in life. It’s about teaching determination, perseverance and humbleness. And nobody does it better, with more conviction and class, than our Prosper Eagle Coaches. We live in an extraordinary community, built on more pride and spirit than I’ve ever seen before. It doesn’t matter the age, sport, activity or achievement, we love our Eagles! We are recognized as a community of greatness…We set high expectations and when we reach them, we don’t just relish in the success, we set the bar even higher! We do it right, we challenge ourselves to always be better and we strive for excellence. As we move into our 3rd year of publication, we’d like to thank everyone who works so hard to make each issue happen every month. It is truly a blessing and an honor to highlight so many of the great things that happen in our town. We welcome any additional article ideas you may have and we’d love to share your photos from Prosper activities and events. Please send them to Heather@WeAreProsper.com. In HIS Presence
//
I am a geek and I am not particularly ashamed of it. I am your garden variety geek in some areas, but I am also a bit of a church geek. I really enjoy listening to sermons. I go out of my way to download audio and video of preachers I enjoy. I actively seek out teachers and preachers I have heard good things about. What are they saying? How do they say it? Where do they see God working? This week, I was listening to someone I had never heard before. As he started, I was expecting some variation on the usual joke or self-deprecating story that preachers often use. You know… something to create the illusion that the preacher is a cool “dude(ette)”. If you worship at Grace, you should have no idea what I am talking about. ;) Instead, without a hint of pretention or self-importance, he read the word of God. Instead of trying to convince me why I should care, he spoke about the God whose existence, whose provision, whose holiness and love precede me entirely. This wasn’t a God I needed to understand or chase after. This God is completely beyond me… a mystery. Right there in the car, I was at worship. A moment of peace not to reach for, or work toward, or worry about. In that moment, I was in God’s presence. It was so simple. How absurd that we build ornate buildings and scribble opaque doctrines and charter “sacred” organizations… God is already there. When we are feeling disconnected and defeated… God is already there. When we are at our best: reaching, pushing, triumphing… God is already there. God is. Before our doubts, our joy, our anxiety, arrogance and narcissism, God just is. God is. Through Jesus Christ, we know that while there is so much about this God we cannot begin to comprehend, we know that depth of God’s mystery is matched only by God’s love for each of us. Romans 11:33-36 New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him, to receive a gift in return?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen. Doug Kriz is the pastor of Grace Christian Church, a young and growing congregation for Prosper. Join us for worship Sundays at 10:30 at Baker Elementary School. www.graceprosper.org.

Prosper’s Community Picnic Centennial Year Recalls those of Town’s Early Days
By Celso Martinez
W
hat has now become a tradition with solid footing returns to Frontier Park as the third annual Prosper Community Picnic kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Frontier Park Pavilion, says Julie Shivers, Recreation Services Coordinator. “This year’s annual community picnic will be extra special since it’s the Town’s centennial year,” she said. “Even though this is the third year for the picnic in its current form, we know that Prosper residents have been celebrating the approach of fall with a festival for many years. We are simply extending that long tradition.” And, just like the picnics of long ago, local houses of worship will actively participate. Free hot dogs and all the fixings along with soft drinks and water will be offered courtesy of The Lighthouse Christian Fellowship Church, Prosper United Methodist Church and Kroger. The serving line, manned by members of the Town Council, will be open from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. while supplies last. Kona Ice will have their refreshing frozen drinks for sale at a reduced price. In addition to the food and drinks, picnic planners have arranged for an inflatable slide, a pirate ship, bounce houses, rides, games, attractions, music, airbrush tattoos, a cannonball blaster, balloon artistry, LEGO competition, and an obstacle course for kids. Other partners joining in the festivities include Live & PROSPER Magazine, the local Bricks 4 Kidz franchise, Parks and Recreation instructors and local Parent Teacher Organizations. While there will be plenty of room in the park for families to enjoy the food and festivities, planners are encouraging attendees to bring their own blankets and lawn chairs since seating areas will be limited. And, while there is no prohibition on families bringing their own picnic supplies, park rules prohibit glass containers or public display of alcoholic beverages. The food lines will close at 6 p.m., or earlier should supplies run out. However, the Prosper Summer Series concessions will be available beginning at 6:00 p.m. and many of the attractions

will remain open until 8 p.m. At dusk, Live & PROSPER Magazine will present the next outdoor movie of the season. Scheduled for showing is “The Lego Movie.” “Gathering our community, even as it grows, for a picnic that harkens back to the days of Prosper’s early beginnings is something we want to cherish and continue,” said Shivers. “Many people in Town want to preserve that small town feeling, and there’s no more appropriate way to do that than a community picnic.”

// Eagle’s Nest GREAT START TO THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
Drew Watkins, Ed. D. Superintendent of Schools Prosper ISD
As we opened our doors to the new school year we welcomed approximately 7,100 students. This total is broken down by campus as follows:
Baker Elementary Cockrell Elementary Folsom Elementary Rucker Elementary Roger Middle (5/6) Reynolds Middle (7/8) Prosper High School
695 778 732 775 1,198 1,056 1,889
These are no doubt challenging yet exciting times for our district and our community. Our greatest challenge in the short term will continue to be our ability to build new schools to keep pace with the growth; PISD is expected to reach 15,000 students in five short years. Our community demonstrated their impressive support of our schools by passing a $710 million bond issue in 2007 in an attempt to stay ahead of this very growth. Of that $710 million authorization, PISD has a remaining balance of about $620 million to access for future capital projects. However, the District cannot sell addition bonds until there is additional taxable value that comes from new business/commercial development along with new residential developments. Thankfully, it is more about “when” rather than “if ” it is coming. In time, we will have sufficient development to build more schools to accommodate our growing student population. Today, however, we are forced to creatively maximize every square inch of space and implement the use of portable space solutions. Regarding a somewhat related but separate issue, the state school funding system was recently ruled unconstitutional. This should not come as any surprise since this seems to happen every 5-10 years in the world of Texas Public Education. Judge Dietz ruled the current way the State of Texas funds public schools is unconstitutional finding that the Legislature has failed to meet its constitutional duty to suitably provide for Texas public schools because the finance system is structured, operated and funded so that it cannot provide a constitutionally adequate education for all Texas schoolchildren. If the high court upholds this ruling, it would force the legislature back to the drawing board. Of course, the million dollar question is, “So what does this mean for Prosper ISD?” For now... nothing. A final ruling will not likely occur until spring/ summer of 2015. Once the State Supreme Court makes a ruling, state legislators will receive their marching orders and attempt to redesign school funding system that addresses the court findings. As we receive more information throughout this process, we will make every effort to keep our community informed of what the consequences will be for the State as a whole and Prosper ISD in particular. With all of that said, we have a tremendous team of teachers and staff committed to the children of PISD. Selfishly, I have been so excited to see all of our students return from summer break - I am Prosper Proud for many reasons, but it is always the Prosper students that top that list... GO EAGLES!!!

WE WILL NEVER FORGET September 11 Remembrance Ceremony
Most of us remember exactly where we were and what we were doing on that morning. That day that so many lives were tragically lost. That day that many of us became stronger in our faith, held tighter to our families and felt a deepening sense of who we were as an American. That day that ordinary people became heroes. That day that we showed the world what America was made of. That day that we will never forget… A solemn and reverential ceremony to remember the events of September 11, 2001, and honor the memory of those who perished, will be held at the Prosper Fire Station on the event’s anniversary, according to Fire Chief Ronnie Tucker. “We want to ensure that this is never forgotten,” he said. “We remember every person who died that day, and in a special way we pay homage to the brave first responders, firefighters, police officers and paramedics who never thought twice about going in to try to save lives.” The ceremony, held on the front lawn of the Prosper Fire Station, 1500 E. First St., will begin at 8:40 a.m. with Pastor Jason McConnell of Prosper United Methodist Church, acting as narrator and chaplain, providing context for the four “events” that will be commemorated. These events include the attack on the North Tower of the World Trade Center; the attack on the South Tower; the attack on the Pentagon; and the plane crash in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
24 Live & PROSPER Magazine | September 2014
After the Prosper Fire Department Honor Guard and the Prosper Police Department Honor Guard take their respective posts at the steel beam fragments from the World Trade Center and the flagpoles, Pastor McConnell will recite a narrative of each incident. That will be followed by the playing of taps and the lowering of the US Flag to halfstaff. A US Flag will be draped over the steel beam throughout the ceremony and removed and folded at the conclusion. After the four events are commemorated, the ceremony will come to an end with closing remarks. The public is invited to attend the ceremony and are asked to be in place before 8:40 a.m. and remain silent throughout the event. “There is really no way anyone can pay the proper honor to the men and women who were victims of this senseless act,” said Tucker. “And, there is little that can be said to truly pay respects to the first responders. But, we hope that our ceremony, and the many thousands throughout the country, can bring a sense of reverence and admiration for their selfless deeds.” Parking is limited, but the unpaved lot between the fire station and the water tower will be available.

// Remember When
Richland Settlement In last month’s article, we learned that there were two settlements that combined to form the town of Prosper when the railroad and depot were established in the area in 1902 – Rock Hill and Richland. We discussed the settlement of Rock Hill last month, which was located south of Prosper. The other settlement was called Richland. It was smaller than Rock Hill and was located about ¾ of a mile north of Prosper’s current downtown area. The heart of Richland was located at the intersection of Coleman and Prosper Trail. Coleman has been called old Preston Road, Highway 289 and Business Highway 289. This was the original Preston Road/Highway 289 until the Texas Highway Department decided to by-pass downtown Prosper and reroute Preston Road/Highway 289 from Highway 380 north to FM 1461/Frontier Parkway. This is the same road today and goes east of old downtown Prosper. Prosper Trail has had different names and was called County Road #48 first. After 1850, settlers began to move into the area called Richland. There was not much to the community of Richland. There was a school on the southeast corner of Coleman and Prosper Trail. Just east of the school was a grocery store operated by Larkin A. Adamson. There was a Baptist church west of Coleman, on the south side located near the railroad tracks. I have tried to find out more about the church but as of this date I have come up empty handed. In the history of the Good Hope/Parvin Baptist church, it mentions that the church split and one group went to the Pleasant Valley School (just south of Prosper around the 380-Preston Road intersection.) This group of the Baptist church split again and one group went to the Richland Baptist church and the other group went back to the Good Hope Baptist church. In the early history of the Rock Hill Presbyterian church, it was recorded that their church met in the Pleasant Valley School which was about ½ north of Rock Hill. There is a connection of the Pleasant Valley School and

Richland Baptist church but I have found no records of the Pleasant Valley School or the Richland Baptist church. Hopefully in the near future I will locate some information on both of these establishments. The Richland community consisted of a school, grocery store and a church. Ed Crockett owned the land on the northwest corner, and all of my life we called this intersection “Crockett’s Corner.” That is the only name we ever used. My great grandfather, John Greenwood, Sr., settled on the northeast corner of this intersection in the 1870’s and had nearly a section of land, or 640 acres. This land was later divided up between some of his children and there were five different farms on the acreage. Prosper High School was built on land owned by Henry and Oscar Greenwood. Greenwood Memorial Lane in Frontier Park was named in honor of the Greenwood family. The settlers in the Richland area did not want to go to Rock Hill to go to church. They formed the Wesley chapel Methodist church near the corner of Prosper Trail and Coit Road. When the town of Prosper was formed in 1902 most of the people joined the Prosper Methodist church. In 1911 the building was moved to Rhea’s Mill and was eventually torn down in 1924. The people of the Richland community also did not have a post office. They had to travel to Rock Hill to get their mail, which was about two miles away. In 1893, Larkin Adamson, who was the owner of the grocery store in Richland, applied for a post office under the name of Richland. It was turned down because there was already a town in Texas called Richland, near Corsicana in Navarro County. Mr. Adamson then called a community meeting to discuss the post office and asked if anyone had a recommendation as to the name for the new post office. After much discussion, a local resident, Mr. J.C. Slaughter, suggested the name “Prosper” because the crops had been good

The Prosper Post Office officially opened on May 22, 1893. The post office was located in the back of Adamson’s grocery store. Larkin Adamson became the first postmaster and served until 1896. Then Benjamin Naugle from Rock Hill was appointed postmaster in 1896 and served until 1942, with the exception of five months in 1915. The Prosper Post Office was already in existence in the community of Richland when the railroad came through Prosper in 1902. When the railroad built the depot just west of the railroad tracks in old downtown Prosper, the Prosper Post Office and most of the businesses and people of Rock Hill and Richland moved to be near the rail transportation and the two communities became ghost towns in the following years.

and “prosperous” that year. It was agreed upon by the residents and approved by the postal department and that is how Prosper obtained its name.

Jen Sanchez is the owner and center director of Mathnasium® of Prosper, located at Coit & Prosper Trail. Married almost 17 years, she and her husband Chris visited Texas every few months after their wedding and in 2003, moved to Jen’s home state. Local treasures like the silos, ranches and the Cotton Gin quickly convinced them that Prosper would be where they would raise their children. Along with daughters Gabi (11) and Cami (9), they recently celebrated their 11th anniversary as Town residents. Active in local organizations and projects, the Sanchezes are proud to have helped build Windmill playground, support the Cory Ausenbaugh Memorial Scholarship Foundation and served on the boards for the Prosper Area Soccer Organization, the Prosper Youth Sports Association, the Prosper Little League and the Prosper Centennial Committee. Chris is finishing his third term on the Parks & Recreation Board, while working full-time for Bank of America. Jen recently completed her third term as Co-PTO president with Debra Smith. Why Prosper? When we arrived here, there was one stoplight, one elementary school and one restaurant. Coit Road was a tree-tunneled gravel road with few driveways and we could see seven fireworks shows on the 4th of July from our backyard. We were so excited because we came from a busy, crowded place where everyone was just a face in the crowd. It was unusual to see neighbors while out in the city, but not here! Everyone cared about each other and actually listened to our answer when they asked, “How are ya?” We were eager to join the people who came here before us and live a slower, more meaningful life alongside them. We respect and appreciate “Old Prosper” because without these folks, there would be nothing for the rest of us to escape to. We love our neighbors and are so proud to call this Town home! How did you get into the Math Learning Business? As my volunteer duties were winding down last year, I was searching for the next chapter in my career. I have an MBA in marketing, was a professional organizer and enjoyed owning my own business, but I couldn’t help but ponder new opportunities. Our daughters were getting to the age that math became really fun for me as an elementary student. By middle school, I went to the high school for math classes and tutored classmates into college. Upon remembering that, I was reminded that math can make a kid feel isolated too. A teen who feels like she doesn’t quite fit in is not as confident as she should and could be. That can affect her attitude toward other areas in her life, like friends, family and social dynamics. I think the same is felt by kids who struggle in math. When they feel like everyone but them “gets it”, math can be a source of frustration, family tension and poor choices. Having volunteered for years in Prosper schools, I know hundreds of kids and I want every one of them to feel strong, smart, worthy and valued. I discovered Mathnasium® over a year ago and quickly realized that our approach not only helps math make sense to every kind of student, it also changes attitudes and builds confidence. My goal is to not only help them keep up, catch up or get ahead in math…but in life. Kids deserve that as they grow up in Prosper and I am excited to be here for them.

One of the goals of Free Style is to teach you how to use items you already have. My guess is if you live in Prosper, you’ve got some sort of spirit wear hanging in that closet! When you’re not at the game, pair your sports gear and spirit wear with pieces you’d normally wear to dress up an outfit, like a scarf, statement necklace, or blazer for a fresh spin on a favorite look. Here are four examples you can take inspiration from no matter your age:
(Above) Pair a baseball hat with great-fitting neutral pieces like this soft tee, jeans, and flats. Adding a scarf and cuffing the jeans gives your outfit a little extra visual interest. As the weather cools down, swap the tee for a long sleeve version and the flats for a pair of booties.
(Above) Love wearing your tennis shoes? Bright pairs are everywhere this year, from magazines to blogs to the runway. Try pairing them with a favorite button up and jeans, or, if you’re feeling bold, opt for a skirt or dress. Go matchy-matchy or choose neutral colored pieces, like blacks, tans, and whites, to balance out your bright footwear.
(Right) Bring on the bling! Pair a sparkly shirt with an equally sparkly necklace, and ground the look with cuffed jeans and a pair of sneakers. As fall temps hit, trade the crew neck tee for a long sleeve sweatshirt (sans hoodie) and create a new version of the same look.

Pairing items you wouldn’t normally wear together is one of the best ways to “shop” your closet. Experiment with mixing items that have a feminine and masculine feel, like sports wear and jewels, lace and leather, or floral and stripes. Trying new combinations like this gives you dozens of “new” outfit options without having to spend a dime. Those are some stats to get excited about!

I remember my parents telling me as I went through school, that if I wanted something then I needed to save up money for it. Back then, I was saving for the latest designer jeans, gas for my car and movie night. Now that I have my own family responsibilities, my focus has shifted drastically as to what I save money for; however, the concept behind saving money remains the same. If you want something then you need to save up money for it.
Saving by Budgeting
Joanna Coleman, AVP Prosper Bank
One of the first steps in saving money is coming up with a realistic budget based on what money you have coming in and going out. Budgeting is an estimate of expected income and expected expenses. A good rule of thumb for income and expenses that are not the same amount month to month is to plug in income amounts low and plug in expense amounts high. The simplest way to budget is to take a piece of paper and write down how much you make in a one month timeframe; then write down the cost of your bills. Budgeting will help you see how much money you have to work with. The difference in your income and the amount of your bills could be used for ‘big ticket’ items or for additional savings. Budgeting is always a work in process. You will need to look back at the end of each month and determine how accurate your budget for the month really was. It is a good idea to save your receipts for every purchase and compare them to your budget. By revisiting your budget, you will have a better feel for exactly where your money is going each month and this will help you determine what spending habits you need to adjust in order to save more money. There are a wide variety of tools online that can help you budget. The key is to pick a budget tool that works for you and then stick with it. Keep in mind that if you have another income stream (such as a spouse) you both need to be committed and actively striving to stay within your budget.
