Letter From The

P ublishers

It’s football season in Prosper, Texas! We’re a few weeks into school now, and our days are finally starting to feel a bit more routine. As busy as the beginning of each school year is, the excitement and fun of the Friday Night Lights more than makes up for it! Our school spirit is unlike any you’ve ever seen… and our fans, athletes, coaches, cheerleaders, band and drill team are not only talented, but they exhibit class and an unwavering love for Prosper High School. If you’re new to Prosper ISD and haven’t had the chance to experience a PHS pep rally or game, you are in for a treat!! Our students and fans are the envy of the entire state of Texas…all thanks to our wonderful PISD administration, our parents and the standard of excellence that our children strive for. WE ARE PROSPER…WE ARE ONE!!

Jason & Heat her Reynolds With Prosper Pride,

While the appearance of Prosper seems to be rapidly changing these days, you can personally help spruce up the outward appearance of several locations near our downtown Prosper area. Powered by Cornerstone Assistance Network of North Central Texas, local individuals, families, and groups will be coming together as one to serve our own community on Saturday morning, September 19, from 8:00 until noon. Working in conjunction with Trish Eller, Code Compliance Officer for Town of Prosper, volunteers will be working together to help with trimming, raking, mowing, general yard clean-up, painting, power washing, and other items. Several properties have been identified and matched with Serve Prosper to help with a beautification program. Members of several Prosper churches are participating in the event, and in the past, there have been many individuals, families, and youth groups coming out to give a helping hand and meet fellow neighbors from across Prosper. Additionally, Alford Homes has agreed to re-roof one of the properties and is donating the materials and labor for this endeavor. Serve Prosper is something tangible volunteers can do to help make a positive impact in our Town. If you are wishing to participate, please watch the Facebook page www. facebook.com/ServeProsper to sign up to help with various tasks. Check-in begins at 7:30am on September 19. Please bring any supplies that you can based on your task you sign up for. The goal is to be finished by noon, which is definitely a feasible goal if enough volunteers come out to help. Additionally, there is also a local blood drive that same day, so this can actually turn into a Serve Prosper DAY! Reach out to some neighbors and come participate in the amazing things we can do because #WeAreProsper!

OFF AND RUNNING...

Eagle’s Nest

Well, the 2015-2016 school year is off and running!! The official enrollment tally is currently at 8,275 students, Dr. Drew Watkins which is about 1,100 more than what we started school PISD Superintendent with a year ago. Starting a new school year is exciting, but it does not come without its challenges. Despite the efforts of many, the roads are still not adequate to accommodate our exploding population. Therefore, I cannot thank you enough for exercising mercy and patience in your efforts to get from Point A to Point B during the dismissal times around town. We have approximately 4,000 students attending schools within a square mile of each other (Rucker, Reynolds, and PHS). What is the solution you ask? A few things you might consider to help the situation would be to ride the bus, carpool, and/or avoid showing up at school 30+ minutes before the dismissal bell. A secret that only a few take advantage of is to actually plan your schedule to arrive at school about 10 minutes after the bell and you are able to avoid most, if not all, of the traffic and grab your child and go. And, if you are not a parent of a school-aged child any longer, I would simply avoid Coleman between 3:15-3:45 each day for your own sanity! With all that said, we have had a tremendous beginning to the school year. One of my favorite parts is getting to know all of the new Kindergarten students on all of our campuses – this year we have 661 new Kindergarten students. For perspective, this year’s senior class of 430 students is the last class that is below 500 students with MANY more to come. Thank you all for your countless efforts to help make this a great school year for our students.

“We Will Never Forget” Prosper Fire Department Hosts 9.11 Commemorative Ceremony As the 14th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attack approaches, the Prosper Fire Department will again pay solemn homage to the victims with a ceremony steeped in reverence and remembrance, says Fire Chief Ronnie Tucker. “There is simply nothing more honorable, more courageous, or more heroic than someone giving their life so others can live,” he said. “And our annual ceremony is a small way for us in Prosper to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9-11.” The ceremony, condensed to 30 minutes, is scheduled for Friday, September 11 and begins at 9 a.m. This year’s location is in the pavilion at Frontier Park, on the north end of Town. Bagpipes, a traditional part of solemn firefighter events, will be played, flags will be lowered, a speaker will offer some appropriate reflections, bells will ring to signal “last alarm” for the fallen first responders, and the newly refurbished 9-11

12 PROSPER Magazine | September 2015

Memorial Trailer will be on display. The Fire Department Honor Guard has taken charge of conducting the remembrance ceremony, under the direction of Firefighter/ Paramedics Micky Blain and B.J. Wendling. Assisting will be the Prosper Police Department Honor Guard. At the ceremony, the Prosper Fire Department will be unveiling the newly redesigned 9-11 Memorial Trailer, which has recently undergone a makeover. Containing steel from the World Trade Center, the trailer’s redesign was the result of a coordinated effort by the Town of Prosper, the Prosper Firefighters Association Local 4193, Gas Monkey Garage, 360 Wraps of Dallas, and the EMS medical group of Baylor Medical Center in McKinney. Wendling says the historic piece of steel carries a special fascination. “Seeing this piece of history and being able to touch it is moving to many people who

remember that morning, even outside of the Fire and Police Departments,” he said. Members of the public are invited to participate in the memorial event.

6:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.

The first hour and half of my day is doing busy work so I can be available for students and staff for the remainder of the day. Job tasks during this time include opening the office, turning on the coffee for our employees, checking e-mails and returning e-mails, making drafts for my secretary, making a “Things-to-Do” list, visit with assistant principals about the day’s events, visit with lead custodian, write birthday card notes for PHS employees who have birthdays and place them in their boxes, write out affirmation notes to employees or send affirmation e-mails (I am big on praising employees and students). Also, a big part of this time is spent on scripting. I script all weekly bulletins, faculty meetings, department chair meetings, assemblies, site-base meetings, pep rallies, and graduation.

6:00 a.m. - 6:40 a.m. Arrive to work

14

PROSPER Magazine | September 2015

Things to expect from Mr. Wright in the 2015-2016 school year:

This year, I have a personal goal to visit one on one with every senior before graduation. I will be making daily announcements over the intercom beginning at 10:51 a.m. to praise the great things our students and extracurricular programs have accomplished. I also use this time to communicate campus expectations for our students I love being a High School Principal! I love connecting with our students and staff! My job is definitely not boring and changes every day. The day usually is so fast paced that I look up and the day is gone! My passion is our students and Student Achievement is my #1 Priority. I have a bulletin board in my office that is filled with student pictures and this is a daily reminder of why I do what I do, I am here at PHS for the kids!! I am very blessed to work in a school district with the very best school board, superintendent, assistant superintendent, students, staff, parents, and community! We Are Prosper … We are ONE!

8:25 a.m. – 3:44 p.m.

Once the official school day has started, I use this time to visit classrooms and observe our wonderful teachers and students in action. Every administrator does a walkthrough on all new staff members during the first three months of school and then I will do extra walkthroughs and evaluations on teachers who I am assigned to for the 2015-2016 school year. The school day is also filled with teacher observations, student and staff conferences or meetings, PLC meetings, Cabinet meetings, parent conferences, returning phone calls, returning e-mails, preparing for daily announcements for the student body, etc. I meet with a lot of students during their lunch times and I make myself available for them so they are not missing class. I also work very closely with my Parent Action Team and I attend those meetings as well. A large portion of my day is spent in the hallways monitoring our students during all class changes. All of the administrators at PHS understand that it is very important to be visible during the school day. I spend a lot of time meeting with our Student Council to plan school activities. In addition, I meet often with our Spirit Leaders and I am excited that we will have a Spirit Leader Class and I will be visiting with those students to plan School Spirit for the 2015-2016 school year.

3:44p.m. – Till the Job Gets Done

After the official end of the school day, I use this time again for busy work and meetings. We have faculty meetings, site base meetings, individual teacher meetings, parent conferences, special event preparation meetings, etc. I never have a set time that I leave the office in the afternoon. I will work until the job gets done! Some days in the life of a high school principal are very long and I have been known to work 15-16 hours a day when including evening school activities. Last year in May, I had a two week stretch when I attended an evening school activity every night with the one exception of Sunday night. This is time away from my family. I have the best wife who is very understanding. Every Saturday morning, we will drink coffee and visit one on one for two hours to catch up from the busy work week. We live close to the school, so I eat supper every night with my family and then head back to our evening PHS activities.

8:18 a.m.

Go out to the hallways to monitor and visit with students.

Mr. Wright’s Pep Rally Procedures 8:00 a.m.

Review the day with my secretary, Anne Craig (I have the best secretary in America and she keeps me organized).

I love connecting with our students and that is why I MC all pep rallies. I work very closely with the cheerleaders, Julie Brantley, and Kathy Nelms scripting out all pep rallies. I conduct a one hour walkthrough before every pep rally to make sure everything is perfect for our students once the pep rally begins. On game days, I take pictures with our students who are dressed up for the theme of the day!

T wn Matters From the Mayor’s Desk

Prosper Community Picnic Few things have the potential to bring a community closer together than sharing a meal and spending time in conversation. There’s something intrinsically soothing and comforting about sitting together, getting to know one another and enjoying a meal with friends and neighbors. People have been gathering and sharing meals for generations, benefitting in lasting ways from that communal interaction. Many times, these gatherings served as a welcome to a new season, or the communitywide raising of walls for a new barn, or to celebrate the harvesting of crops. Sometimes, however, people just got together for no other reason than to grow closer as a community.

Christian Fellowship Church and Prosper United Methodist Church for the hot dogs, condiments, drinks as well as for their expert grilling. These faith communities have been with us since the very first picnic, and we very much appreciate it. Town planners have lined up games, bounce houses, a DJ, refreshments, balloon artists, face-painters, the Xtreme gaming truck, LEGO bricks and lots of other activities for kids and adults. At the same time, we plan to use the picnic to bring attention to the necessity of continuing to help our neighbors who find themselves in need of a helping hand. The picnic will once again play host to the “Hunger Is No Picnic” campaign.

That last reason is probably the one that best describes the annual Prosper Community Picnic. The fourth annual picnic is set for Saturday, Sept. 12 at Frontier Park. The festivities begin at 4 p.m. and conclude at 7 p.m. Coming together as a community to meet new neighbors, renew old acquaintances and reaffirm our commitment to each other’s health and well-being are more than enough reasons to attend. My colleagues on the Town Council and I will be serving hot dogs for a while during the picnic, all with the intent of seeing as many of you as possible, hearing your concerns and sharing in the accomplishments of your family members. Our thanks go to the members of Lighthouse

The food pantry at Bethlehem Place is in need of more resources. Canned goods, nonperishable items, small toiletries and baby items are all needed to resupply the pantry. School kids have already begun to help. Like last year, each school is participating in the “Hunger Is No Picnic” competition. The competition calls for each school to gather as many items as they can, and set up collection stations at the picnic. When attendees arrive, hopefully armed with canned goods from home, they can choose to place their donations at any of the colorfully decorated collection booths, usually pickup truck beds. At the end of the picnic, the school with the highest percentage of food items will be awarded the traveling trophy and they’ll win a free pizza lunch for their teachers and staff.

16

PROSPER Magazine | September 2015

The local Pizza Hut, and its manager Andrew Snyder, have been kind enough to provide the lunch prize. I personally look forward to seeing you at the Community Picnic. And, don’t forget to help the food pantry with a donation!

“HUNGER IS NO PICNIC” Bethlehem Place has need for the following items: Canned vegetables Dried beans Rice Cereals Shampoo Bars of soap Toothpaste Diapers Baby wipes

Home Repairs = Increased Home Value The real estate market is so hot today that most sellers are looking for ways to make their home stand out and sell quickly. I am often asked, “What are some of the repairs I should make before putting my home on the market?” Here are some suggestions from things that don’t cost much at all, to more expensive repairs that will actually increase the value of your home. Making a few repairs—and even some costeffective renovations—can not only skyrocket your home’s value, but can make it a more enjoyable place to live. Listed below are seven of the most valuable repairs you can make for the long term, whether or not you plan to sell in the future. 1. Spruce up Exterior First impressions are important. So whether you are trying to impress your neighbors or a buyer who is driving up for the very first time, sprucing up the exterior of your home is a good thing to do. Repairing any broken doors, damaged screens, or cracks in your front walk can really make a difference. Paint the trim, mow the grass, add some color, trim the shrubs, raise the canopy on your trees…these are all good things to do to make your drive-by appeal even better. 2. Repair the Roof Nothing alarms a potential buyer more than a

20

PROSPER Magazine | September 2015

roof that looks bad. This is usually not a D-I-Y job, too dangerous. Hire a professional. He can take care of damaged or missing shingles, clogged gutters and detached flashing. 3. Address Plumbing Issues When buyers walk through a home, they look for “red flags.” Red flags are nicks, scratches, lights that don’t work, doors that don’t close, faucets that are dripping. Eliminate all the red flags in advance. Some of these things you can tackle yourself. Other times you may need to hire a plumber to fix slow drains, dripping faucets and poorly functioning water heaters. You may benefit most from installing a completely new water heater, especially if yours is 10 to 15 years old, especially if it is in the attic. You don’t want to gamble on an old water heater in the attic. They can leak and cause lots of damage down below. 4. Improve Interior Walls One area you can definitely improve your value and do yourself is interior paint. You may want to consider painting your walls a more neutral palette. Be sure to patch any holes and sand down the walls while they’re at it to get the best effect. 5. Replace the Flooring One of the fastest and easiest ways to reinvigorate your home is to replace the flooring. There are a number of options: new

By: Joey Womble

carpet, wood-look vinyl flooring, eco-friendly bamboo or cork—you’re sure to find a floor that you and future owners will love. If this is out of your budget, consider getting the carpets professionally cleaned and stretched. This can add years to their life. 6. Renovate the Kitchen Kitchens can make or break a deal. If you are ready to tackle a bigger renovation that will add value to your home, think seriously about updating the kitchen. New appliances, refaced cabinetry and stone countertops are a few of the most popular kitchen modifications that will help increase the value of your home. 7. Update the Bathrooms The same can be said about the bathrooms in your home. Ashley Bass Prosper Insurance Agency

My name is Ashley Bass and I'm with Prosper Insurance Agency. We are a local independent insurance agency located here in Prosper TX. I have been in the insurance industry for 12 years. I started out as a receptionist at a family owned agency in Amarillo TX. From there, I got my P&C license and have been selling both commercial and personal lines insurance ever since. I moved to our Prosper location in April of 2013. Over the past two and a half years I'm proud to say that I have been able to rapidly grow the agency in a short period of time. I am also proud to say that Prosper Insurance Agency also won New Business of the Year in 2014. I'm excited to continue to grow the business in the future as well as continue to service the local community. You can contact Ashley at: 972-347-2707 www.ProsperInsAgency.com

In August of 2004, just 3 months after finishing her degree at Baylor College of Dentistry and graduating first in her class, Dr. Jill was the first doctor to ever open a business in Prosper. She opened Prosper Family Dentistry with a desire to develop a family dental practice that focuses on comprehensive oral health care that is founded on building relationships in the dental chair and in the community. In 2006, Dr. Lara, who was also a Baylor College of Dentistry Honor Graduate and close friend of Dr. Jill, joined the practice to serve the needs of the growing community. Since then, Dr. Jill, Dr. Lara and their team have participated and sponsored countless community events including the Prosper health fairs, local charity runs, mission dental work, Prosper Country Christmas, provided mouth guards free of charge to the varsity football team for 10 years and many, many others. Together, they have developed a risk-management approach to dentistry that allows for long term planning and less time in the dental chair. Their passion for general dentistry allows them to have a unique comprehensive approach for not only oral health, but the entire head and neck. This approach is done with a comprehensive evaluation combined with 3D imaging. In addition to this unique approach to general dentistry, they have a passion for cosmetic dentistry. They are trained on and practice conservative cosmetic dentistry which means less tooth/enamel loss and less drilling. Both doctors are committed to advancing their education and staying current with new techniques, equipment and materials. Each participates in international study clubs and completes, on average, 75 hours of continuing education a year. Dr. Jill and Dr. Lara take pride in the relationships they have with their patients and team members. They look forward to making you a part of their family! Call today to schedule your consultation! Dr. Marisol Trautmann After 23 years of practicing dentistry, I still wake up every day with renewed commitment to tackle the day and aspiration to change someone’s life. I feel blessed to have the opportunity to practice my passion and my career– I love what I do. I have had the pleasure of calling Prosper my home for the last eight years, and with the help of this wonderful community, my three sons are growing into respectable teenagers. Working in the Town of Prosper has always been a dream of mine and I am delighted to have opened my office, Prosper Dental Health, in 2014. After graduating from dental school in Costa Rica, I pursued my specialty degree in Prosthodontics at Ohio State University, and I have been practicing since 1997. While Prosper Dental Health is an adult general dentistry office, I also treat patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. I am also a lifelong learner and I am always looking for opportunities to improve my skills through further training on the best techniques to treat the most common and the most complicated oral conditions. The last four years have been a whirlwind of simultaneously managing stress and appreciating our many blessings. Being self-employed is much harder than most people realize and being a woman in business adds to the difficulty. While building and managing a business, I am constantly trying to find a balance between work and family. My only child just started her senior year and has had to share her mom with a growing business during all of her high school years. She once told me that the business was my other child. She used the analogy that it was like a newborn baby that would need a lot of attention and constant supervision in the beginning, but that it would eventually grow up and be more self-sufficient. I thought it was a brilliant analogy because early on there was a lot of crying and sleepless nights, although I’m pretty sure it was me doing the crying. With all of that said, I would do it over again in a minute. Owning my own medical practice has given me the opportunity to do what I love to do more than anything, without following a corporate model or needing permission to make decisions that affect my staff and my patients. I believe in Servant Leadership, and I work very hard to ensure that my staff knows that I am there to serve them. Together, we are able to maintain an environment where our primary team focus is on serving others. I believe this is the difference you feel when you walk through the doors of Family Focused Care.

Antonette Cleveland Trepho Enterprises TM

Trepho Enterprises was started in 2013 by a Stay-At-Home Mom with a desire to simplify biblical concepts. One day while teaching her then - three year old daughter and two year old son the books of the Bible, Antonette noticed the need to create a hands on Christian product that would make learning the Books of the Bible both fun and exciting. She had no idea it would be six years before she would have a final product. Many companies were not willing to work with a company as small as Trepho . There were many unreturned phone calls and countless hours of research and development. “I was told the product would have to be manufactured in another country”. As a wife and Stay-At-Home Mom, family is priority and Antonette was not willing to spend time away from her husband and children to find a manufacturer overseas. In addition, she believes it’s important to help provide jobs within the United States. Having faced much rejection, Antonette became discouraged. The thought of quitting crossed her mind several times. One day she thought about the Bible verse quoted often in her church service – For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). Antonette persevered and was able to find vendors that would assist in manufacturing the product…..in the U.S. of course! Starting a business while supporting a husband in his career and raising four kids has been anything but easy. Antonette’s husband was recently offered a Vice President position that required relocation to Atlanta, GA. “It was bitter sweet. On the one hand I was excited for my husband but on the other hand I was set to launch the product here in Texas. My emotions were all over the place. I felt like God wasn’t TM

being fair. My husband was trying so hard to be understanding of my feelings. He began to pray for God’s peace regarding the decision to move and asked if I would pray as well. To be quiet honest……I didn’t want to pray. I wanted my way! But deep inside I knew it would be in the best interest of the family to relocate to Georgia.” Having a core team in place and vendors manufacturing and shipping the product will allow Antonette to work remotely beginning Sept 21st. God has a way of working all things out after the counsel of his will (Ephesians 1:11). About the Product - The product consists of a double-sided magnetic board designed to teach the 66 books of the Bible. The beginner side of the board is great for teaching colors, counting, matching, and categorization. The advanced side of the board allows students to test their memory with limited assistance. Students will enjoy placing the color-coded acrylic magnets onto the board. Each set of magnets come with ten color-coded draw string bags for safe keeping. In His Presence Seeking the Divine When It Comes to Forgiveness By Pastor Chris Kouba

All of us, at one time or another, have struggled with forgiveness. It is not an easy thing to do—to seek forgiveness or to forgive. As humans, it just seems to go against our nature. The 18th-century English poet Alexander Pope profoundly and succinctly said: “To err is human; to forgive, divine.” And truly, we need to seek the divine, the words of Jesus, to guide us on the matter of forgiveness. In the book of Matthew, Jesus teaches on how to deal with those who sin against you. And after hearing about the importance of not overlooking or ignoring sin, the apostle Peter wanted clarification. Matthew 18:21 says: Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” It was a trick question all along … at least that is what Peter thought he was asking. He wasn’t interested in how he could be most obedient to God’s commands. Rather, he wanted to see how he could still get credit but establish the limits to the obedience. Peter wasn’t interested in following the rules; he was most interested in the exception to the rule. The religious leaders of the day taught that you were only required to forgive someone three times; so Peter’s question implies more than double what was expected. But he could have never expected Jesus’ response: Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times (Matthew 18:22). Jesus makes it very clear … but Peter doesn’t get it. When we think of forgiveness, we usually think about it as an event. You sin against someone … you go to the person and apologize … and then you say, “Will you forgive me?” Hopefully, the person will say yes … the event is over, and you move on. Jesus teaches us that forgiveness is not just an event, it is also a process. He isn’t providing a formal number where you only get 490 chances and then your limit is up. Instead, He is saying that you are to always and continually and repeatedly forgive. It means you forgive again when you remember the offense later; you forgive when you see that person, and it reminds you what he or she did; you forgive that person once again when you relive the consequences and the pain and the wreckage the actions against you have caused. The famous Christian author C.S. Lewis put it this way: “Everyone says forgiveness is a lovely idea until they have something to forgive.” It isn’t going to be easy, but it is the only way you can experience freedom. The question you need to ask yourself today is: “Whom do I need to forgive … again … and again … and again?” Dr. Chris Kouba is Lead Pastor at the North Campus of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Prosper. Led by Dr. Jack Graham, Prestonwood also has campuses in Plano and Dallas.

Choosing Your Child's Education Wisely by Mrs. Donna Leadford

Being a parent is one of the greatest joys in life. Moreover, parenting with all of its bumps and bruises, ups and downs, is absolutely worth it. With the joy of parenting come many decisions that a parent must make for their child from birth to adulthood. One of the single most important decisions is that of school choice. Fortunately, we live in a country, state, and area with many great choices: public schools, private prep schools, home school options and schools of faith. We live in a land of plenty, and these school options demonstrate this fact. As a Christ-follower, I began looking for an option that would help me to teach my children to be Christ-followers. Making the decision to enroll my son in a private Christian school and also to serve as an administrator in a private school more than fifteen years ago was life changing. I noticed immediately that my conversations and interactions with my then seventh-grade son changed. While my son had always done well in school, I saw a new level of academic rigor and challenge. He needed to study! He wanted to study. I recall him telling me, “Mom, it’s like every lesson is one when the principal is observing.” He told me specific examples, and I relished in knowing more about his day. Not only was he challenged academically, but he also began to learn more about biblical worldviews – not just what he had been told was true. He was taught to think more critically, logically and was learning how to defend his

34

PROSPER Magazine | September 2015

faith. I recall walking through one of the toy superstores when he pointed out a toy that was an example of “naturalism.” Wow…Where had this kid been, and what was happening to him? Not only was he growing in biblical knowledge, but also in spiritual discernment. For the first time in his life, he had his home, church and school teaching the same message. As an administrator, my first year in Christian education was spent with tears welling up in my eyes several times a week! My heart overflowed with gratitude, not for what we were able to do, but for what we were expected to do – teach the truth of God’s Holy Word. This went beyond weekly chapels and daily Bible classes. I saw God’s truth woven into every curricular and extracurricular area. Teachers and coaches did not shy away from “the world” but helped children make sense of it. I recall a PreK student getting into the car on the first day of school and looking at her mom and saying, “You know the Bible? It’s TRUE!” The mom later told me how often she had conveyed to her child that the Bible was true. However, there is something special to a four-year-old when their teacher holds up a Bible and says, “This is God’s word to us, and everything in it is true.” As the mom told me, “I’ve always told her the Bible is true! It took hearing it from a teacher before it all connected in her mind.” It is being a part of helping make those connections that excites me the most about Christian education.

Character development begins early in a child’s life. The optimal time for the transformation of a child’s mind and heart is when they are very young. Parents are the starting point for developing the lens through which their child will view the world. Parents are the beginning of their education. During a school year, a student will interact with educators for 35 to 40 hours a week, including extracurricular activities. I discovered that value of Christian education was not only scholastic excellence but spiritual growth and congruent messages at home, in church and school. Our children are the next generation of executives, teachers, pastors, parents, lawyers, doctors and many other vocations and callings. What lens are you developing for your child? Prayer: Father, thank You for the precious gift of my child(ren). Please give me wisdom and discernment to lead him/her/them to be all that You have created him/her/them to be to Your glory! Amen. Mrs. Donna Leadford is an established educator with a passion for Christian education and has more than 30 years experience in education. Currently, Mrs. Leadford serves as Principal at the North Campus of Prestonwood Christian Academy in Prosper.

TEA & FASHION Benefitting Clothe a Child

Not all families in Prosper and Celina can afford to buy new school clothes for their children. The organization Clothe a Child, in partnership with churches and area businesses, provides funds, acquired through donations, to buy clothing at Kohls for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. On October 17, 2015, Kohls in Frisco will open its doors before business hours for designated families from Prosper and Celina to shop for back-to-school togs at discounted prices. Families will receive a shopping voucher for each eligible child. A volunteer will accompany each family as they make selections and present their vouchers in the checkout line. Monetary donations are needed to provide vouchers, and volunteers are needed to help shoppers. The Prosper United Methodist Church and the Mission, its second worshipping community, will be hosting a fundraiser tea and fashion show on September 20, from 2:00pm-4:00pm, in the cafetorium at Cockrell Elementary School, 1075 Escalante Trail, Prosper, TX. Those who attend will enjoy sipping tea and lemonade along with delicious pastries, cookies, and tea sandwiches. Children will walk the runway as they model their back- to- school clothing. Any child who attends the tea may participate in the fashion show; they simply need to wear their favorite fashions to the event. Generous local merchants have donated gift baskets filled with items from their stores and gift cards for their services. All who attend will receive tickets to be entered in drawings for these baskets which include handcrafted goods from local artisans. Attendees can also purchase additional tickets to increase their chances of winning a gift basket. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Clothe a Child to provide $100 vouchers for economically disadvantaged children from Prosper and Celina for shopping at Kohl’s on October 17. Tickets for the event can be purchased or donations can be made at prospertea.eventbrite.com
