hat a fantastic Fall we have had here in Prosper ISD especially considering the uncertainty surrounding school this year and our athletic seasons. We didn’t let that stop us from working, growing, competing and getting better. We consider it to be a WIN each day we are allowed to continue playing the sports we love in Prosper ISD. Both football teams had an interesting season as they both faced a full quarantine of the Varsity teams during the 2020-2021 season and played a Varsity game the day they were released!. The Blue Hawks earned a hard fought win over Lake Dallas in their first year as a Varsity program and we expect even bigger and better things out of them next season. The Prosper Eagles made it to the State Quarterfinals and ended their season in a triple overtime loss in January. What an exciting ride for the Eagles. Both PHS and RHHS volleyball programs qualified for the State playoffs in their respective divisions. PHS lost to the eventual State Champs, Flower Mound, in the Regional Quarterfinals in a tough battle. RHHS lost to Lebanon Trail in their Bi-District match up. We are very proud of both programs and excited to see what next year brings! Cross Country had an outstanding season with both HS programs advancing qualifiers to the State Meet in

Round Rock on November 23rd & 24th. The Blue Hawks were led by Blake Barnes, Regional Champion and Alexis Svoboda & Kirsten Towle on the girls side. All 3 athletes finished in the top 10 at the State Meet. The girls team were District runner up and 4th place at Regionals while the boys team were also District Runner up and 3rd at Regionals. PHS saw a return to State by Aubrey O’Connell who finished 3rd at the State meet. They had a great showing at District with the girls finishing as District Runner up and 4th place at Regionals. The boys were led by Dawson Svoboda and Jack Johsnton who finished as the District Champion & District Runner-up respectively. Both Varsity tennis programs made it to the playoffs during their Fall team tennis seasons. They both played hard and lost in a tough fight to their Bi-District foes. They are now preparing for their Spring individual seasons. We are very proud of our Fall teams and their Coaches. While it wasn’t easy, we were able to make it through our Fall seasons and complete them, which again is a feat many thought impossible. They spent countless hours planning, sanitizing and making sure each athlete, Coach and team had what they needed to feel safe in order to play at the highest level possible! Congratulations to our Fall sports! Thank you for leading the way.

Tennis, despite all of the challenges and changes Prosper COVID brought us, did incredible this fall! With our

spring season being cut short last year due to COVID, everyone on the team did anything and everything they could to make sure we kept playing! I am so proud of both the JV and Varsity teams for not only how they performed and finished this fall, but how they adjusted to any changes, followed rules, and looked out for each other to make sure we could finish strong as a team.

12 | Prosper HYPE - Fall 2020

This fall, we finished 3rd place in our district and went on to play in the bi-district match. We fell short against a solid Coppell team, but when I look at how tough we played and know the athletes left it all on the court, I couldn’t ask them for anything more. It was a great fall season! They continue to make me proud and I can’t wait to see how much success we have this spring season! Watch for us in the Spring Edition also, as we started our spring tournaments on January 21st!

My favorite memory from my senior season is from the McKinney North Pool Play tournament. My doubles partner, Haley, and I played three matches, with two of them being really good, close matches. We finished in 2nd place by one game against Allen, but we both felt that it was the best we had played so far. While we wish we had won, we felt that we had made great progress in played as a team during those matches! -Lauren Hallauer

5-2 in district play and finish 3rd in district Bi-district playoff loss to Centennial What a season that our Blue Hawk Tennis team Wow! had. As a new school and a new program, we were op-

timistic about what the result would be. When the school year started, we weren’t even sure if we would be able to have a season, but regardless, our goal was to qualify for the playoffs. Knowing full well that this is an extremely tough task for a new program, we believed that our Blue Hawks were up for the challenge. Each and every player bought in to the concept of our team and they worked extremely hard to achieve our goals. Led by our incredible 8 seniors, we accomplished our goal…qualifying for the playoffs!

14 | Prosper HYPE - Fall 2020

I cannot put into words how proud I am of our inaugural season. Everyone on this team gave it their all and we achieved our goal. Our district has some really tough competition, and our 2 losses were very close. This was a great learning experience for our players who will return next year. And to our seniors, I want to say thank you! Each of you made the season as great as it was and gave me your all. As a coach, it is one of the proudest moments in my career. All of our Blue Hawks set the bar high for our future teams to come!!!

“We had a great first season as a team! We fought hard and finished 3rd overall in the district. It was a lot of fun, and I’m so proud of our team and all of the hard work put in during every practice and match.” -Maegan Royster

“My senior year has been filled with countless memories, but my favorite memory had to have been the match in the fall vs Allen. Drew and I always enter each match with our motto “there isn’t a ball we can’t get to” which speaks for itself that there won’t be a ball that doubles bounces on our court. Drew and I have the best time out there and he honestly has been a blessing for me on and off court, and I know on the court I can trust him in every situation. He knows I have his back no matter what and that he has mine so we were determined to go out and win our toughest match of the year Drew and I knew going in we had a very good doubles match to play in a hostile environment, but we knew if we lived up to our motto and controlled what we could control we would get outta there with a win. Drew and I were able to win a crazy doubles match in which we had everyone watching and cheering us on and winning the third set breaker 12-10 after being down 6-9 to get the win. I will never forget him and I dropping our raquets and doing a signature chest bump that we were the ones that who really did that out there, what we worked for. Then I was able to play an even crazier singles match after and win 6-3 6-0 and finish the match on the craziest match point by hitting a volley winner than went on my opponents side and rolled back over onto my side, for sure being the craziest/coolest shot I had ever hit in my life. I’ll never forget the countless Allen and Prosper fans and me being the last singles match all my teammates and all of Allen’s team watching my match and me being able to win the match, especially with the craziest/coolest shot I have ever hit in my life on the match point. I kinda

16 | Prosper HYPE - Fall 2020

lost time and felt in shock because the crowd was going crazy and everyone was in shock. I have never hit a shot like that, especially for it to be on match point sealed the deal for me. That point will always stick with me for the rest of my life, and I can always picture the shocked faces of the Allen crowd and the screaming faces of the Prosper fans and my teammates on that crazy night. I also was greeted by Coach Weaver and Coach Cunningham and to me realized that I did my job, I beat our toughest opponents in my last year being here which had been one of my goals all along. It was so reassuring to see how happy and proud both of they were, and that what all three of us had practice and worked so hard for all four years. That night I ended up completing the task of winning every fall singles match, and completed the task of beating our rivals two times in one match which was a job well done. We had always worked for this so to see the way you both were that night knew I had done everything I had for Prosper that night. I ended the night with both wins for my prosper vs Allen and I was so glad I was able to put us on the map and show Allen who Prosper was and we were here to stay. This also meant so much to me because the prior years Allen took it to me and beat me so being able to get two wins for my team, especially in the fashion in which how I got both wins was absolutely the perfect night for me and the best bus ride home with my teammates singing our favorite songs.” -Jett Anderson, PHS

was a year of uncertainty for us all. We were not even sure This if we were going to have a volleyball season. Both staff and

players had to be aware and willing to accept the reality that our season could come crashing down at the drop of a hat. However, even knowing that, our players devotion to the team and to practices remained at an all-time high. We had some of the most outstanding performances from both returning players and newcomers to varsity. North Texas is very blessed with a number of immensely talented high school volleyball teams. We are incredibly proud of the team success in finishing 1st in district with an overall record of 17-4 and a district record of 11-1. Prosper ended their season in the 2020 UIL 6A Region I Regional Quarterfinal Round of playoffs, finishing ranked #16 in the state of Texas. Prosper Volleyball is incredibly proud of the accolades that some of our athletes received at the end of the year at the district and state level. The District Awards include: Bailey Birmingham- District

2020 Rock Hill Volleyball season was one that will be The remembered for many years to come. It was a year of firsts:

first time to play in the Rock Hill Arena, first program victory, first playoff appearance, and first time to play during a worldwide pandemic. Our girls conquered every challenge that was thrown at them both on and off the court. We knew that we would have an amazing year after watching the way these young ladies worked together this summer at speed camp. They pushed each other and challenged one another every day in order to prepare for the season ahead. The hard work paid off for them this season.

Without the usual pre-district tournaments and team building events due to the pandemic, our five seniors worked extra hard to cultivate a family feeling amongst the whole program. Seniors Taylor Bass, Jenna Curran, Montana Crumbaugh, Shallan Marcum, and Shaylee Shore model what it means to be a highcharactered student-athlete, a foundation that’s sure to leave a legacy in this inaugural season.

28 | Prosper HYPE - Fall 2020

Together, the Blue Hawks earned their first victory as a program against Red Oak on September 19, 2020. They continued their fight earning 3rd in a tough 10-5A district, leading to the Blue Hawk’s first playoff appearance against Lebanon Trail! The entire program came out to support them, cheering them on from the stands. With the hard-working example set by the seniors, next year’s prospects look even brighter for the Blue Hawks. This was a season of growth not only as athletes, but as teammates for the Rock Hill Volleyball players, and because of that, next year’s rising seniors are ready to turn our program firsts into program traditions.

“Prosper volleyball will always be the most memorable part of my volleyball career. Although I am so sad that my high school career is coming to an end, I am so excited to start a new chapter in my volleyball career at the University of Tulsa. Thank you Prosper Volleyball!! Reign Cane!!!” -Bailey Birmingham, PHS

“As my HS career comes to an end, I am overwhelmed with joy for what will come next. I appreciate the skills I’ve obtained at Prosper – not just those I’ve developed on the court, but the lessons that have molded me into being a better person overall. I am excited to close this door and step into the world of Boston College to play volleyball and compete at an elite level both athletically and academically.” -Nikki Steinheiser, PHS

Volleyball has been such a huge part of my life since third grade and my senior season has undoubtedly been the best season I could have ever asked for. Not only was I able to build a new family with the amazing people I was surrounding myself with, but I was also able to play with my best friend one last time. Being able to say I ended my volleyball career with her by my side will forever be something I can hold close to my heart. I will forever remember the memories my teammates and I built on and off the court, as well as the endless support and criticism my coach had given me during season. I can proudly say she is the best coach I have ever had and I wouldn’t trade the experience for the world. As a team we not only set our own records and became the first Rock Hill Volleyball Team to make playoffs, but also set standards that you can’t just measure by numbers and data. We truly left our legacy on Rock Hill and it will forever be my favorite season by far. -Montana Crumbaugh, RHHS

30 | Prosper HYPE - Fall 2020

“My time with Prosper Volleyball will be something I cherish forever. I have created lifelong friendships and learned valuable lessons from this program. I’m sad it’s coming to an end, but thankful that I’ve got to experience and be part of something special. I can’t wait to use what I’ve learned from the past four years on the court and apply it off the court in college. Eagles forever!!” -Riley Price, PHS

“I will forever be grateful to Rock Hill Volleyball for not only giving me one last chance to play the game I love with my best friend, but giving me the best coach I could have ever asked for, along with a family and several unforgettable memories. I am truly thankful for being handed the opportunity of being a part of this amazing journey and beginning this incredible legacy. -Shallan Marcum, RHHS

“I’m so blessed to be able to play this game with my best friends. Volleyball has taught me so much that no classroom ever could, and I’m extremely grateful for the opportunities it’s given me. The relationships and memories are something I’ll cherish forever! Go Eagles!” -Carsyn Clayton, PHS

SAMI JACOBS -PHS SENIOR OUTSIDE HITTER

Leaving it all on the

S the head volleyball coach at Prosper High School. Jacobs had ami Jacobs moved to Prosper the same year Erin Kauffman became

never touched a volleyball before the fall of 2013. Her family moved to Prosper after living in Japan for five years, where due to language and cultural barriers, she was unable to participate in sports. Jacobs’ parents decided to put her in a local volleyball rec league because she was tall, and she quickly fell in love with the game of volleyball. North Texas is considered a hotspot for volleyball talent. Many people will tell you that club volleyball is what really matters. While that may be the case in many areas, Coach Kauffman has quickly built Prosper Volleyball into one of the top programs in the state, and arguably one of the best in the country. Jacobs will tell you that it is all due to the work that begins in middle school, before girls ever even touch the high school court. “Playing in PISD is like no other. From my first day on the court in 7th grade, it has helped shape me into the player and young adult I am today,” says Jacobs. “From 7th grade to 12th grade I have changed by not only growing and improving my skills, but more importantly as a leader both on and off the court. My coaches and teammates over the last six years have taught me and challenged me to become a better player and a better person.” Jacobs will be taking those skills and leadership qualities to the volleyball court in Tuscaloosa this coming fall. “I am most excited to be able to take what I have learned through my time at Prosper and use it at Alabama,” says Jacobs. “I am excited to be able to help build the program there with the new coaching staff and create an atmosphere just like the one we have at Prosper.” As an early enrollee at the University of Alabama, Jacobs says that being part of Prosper Volleyball has helped make the transition to a Power 5 volleyball program much easier than she ever anticipated. She says playing at Prosper is much like being in a college program, from scouting reports to watching film to Saturday morning practices. “A big part of Prosper Volleyball that has helped me is the conditioning and weightlifting,” says Jacobs. “Most high school programs don’t have conditioning programs or train their players to be able to lift weights. Having knowledge on the court and in the weight room will help put me above other incoming freshmen.” As a 4-year Varsity letterman winner, Jacobs leaves the Prosper program with a State Championship ring and a long list of accolades behind her name. However, Jacobs says she wants her legacy at Prosper to be more than someone who played great volleyball. She wants to be remembered as someone who made a difference in the Prosper volleyball program, as a great teammate and leader, and as someone who always left it all on the court every time she played. For those who have ever met or watched Sami Jacobs, this won’t be too hard.

and foremost, we were so excited First to have the opportunity to get to

play this fall. Going back to the spring of 2020, one of the most challenging aspects of our day to day planning was not knowing whether or not we would get to play. When word went out that we would be able to begin summer strength and conditioning camp last June, we were ecstatic. At that point we were so happy to implement whatever COVID protocols that we needed to in order to get to play. I am so proud of the way both our coaching staff and athletes did everything necessary in order to make the fall season happen. We took pride in establishing an environment that allowed us to limit contact between our different teams and position groups as much as possible. Looking back now, I am so proud of the season that we had. Having the opportunity to play in the state quarterfinals two years in a row is a tremendous accomplishment. We finished the season at 8-4 overall and 3-3 in district play. Our program, comprised of 6 teams, finished the year with a combined 51-11 record. More important than the final score of any game or our

34 | Prosper HYPE - Fall 2020

final record, I feel we fielded a football team that grew and improved with each week despite the circumstances they faced. One of our Core Values in this program is to “Respect the Process” and fielding a better team week 14 than we did week 1 is a product of the “Process”. This is a credit to the unwavering commitment that our players and coaches to simply show up every day, every practice with an understanding of what we want to accomplish. A second Core Value that I felt our team embodied this season was “Expecting Excellence”. Our players did not enter a contest that they did not expect to win. These young men played one of the most difficult schedules in the nation, and never showed a moment of hesitation or fear. In a year where it would be easy to make excuses for failure our young men rose to the challenge week after week. Our #1 and most important Core Value is “Service to Others”. This is a principle that demonstrates the real value of sports and measure of a program. It also is an area where our kids continued to excel.

We had a young man raise over $7,500 to help in the fight against childhood cancer, 100% participation in our Flight Crew letters every week, and many players use their very limited free time to make appearances at youth football games and practices. We constantly hear how the youth of this country are falling short of the generations that came before them, but I would challenge any detractors to spend some time around the young men we work with every day. These are great athletes and great young men who, not only work their tails off, but are making a difference in their community on a regular basis. The individual accomplishments of our program are not less impressive than what the team accomplished. On the field we had the district Defensive Player of the Year, six 1st Team All-District, 8 2nd Team All-District, and 2 Dallas Morning News Players of the Week. Academically, our young men excelled as well with 10 Academic All-State Selections, over half of our players were Academic All-District, and we a 98% passing rate on the team.

was a phenomenal year to begin our inaugural season This and lay the foundation for years to come. Despite a world-

wide pandemic, we were able to play and compete with three teams in our first year, a full freshman team, full junior varsity, and full varsity. Our kids learned to work, train, fight, play as a team, persevere through adversity, and earn all their success this year. With every moment, the ups, downs, ups, the blood, the sweat, the tears, and the joy.... every moment this year was worth it. If you recall back to the start of the year, we were one of the only school districts to start physical school in August and be able to have full athletics. A special thank you to Dr. Ferguson, Dr. Bradley, Coach Little, Mr. Toth and Coach Sain for their belief and letting our kids shine this year in what they do best! Highlights: All our games were highly competitive, and our kids did an unbelievable job of establishing that FIGHT ROCK FIGHT spirit! Traditionally, first year programs are not able to compete at a high-level vs their established opponents, but our kids and teams proved otherwise. Our freshman team finished with a 7-2 record. Our Varsity earned their first victory in school history on the road vs Lake Dallas coming back from being down three scores and scoring in the final seconds to WIN! Our offense finished 9th in the area for the regular season in total offense. We were able to play with 24 seniors on our varsity this year and are excited to see them graduate as the first ever Blue Hawks.

Players that excelled: We were able to have three All District earners this. #3, Brenner Cox earned 2nd Team All District QB. Brenner also finished #16 in the area in passing yardage. #11, Aiden Houston, earned 2nd Team All District WR. Aiden also finished #11 in the area in receiving yardage. #13, earned 2nd All District Safety and was DMN Defensive Player of the week after our win over Lake Dallas. #22, RB, Donovan Shannon finished #18 in the area in rushing yardage. We also have 4 Academic All State earners: Jared Bartz, Christian Folmor, Hope Bowers and Faith Bowers. In addition, our program had 27 Academic All District Earners. We, as a coaching staff, wake up excited and honored to serve the best kids, the best parents, the best administrators, the best community, the best school district, and the best high school in the State of Texas every day! It was a phenomenal 1st ever football season that has set us up for success in the future. We are so blessed because we GET TO be a part of Rock Hill history every day. We are so proud and thankful for our Seniors and Juniors that chose Rock Hill High School. We are also thankful for Rock Nation’s and the community’s belief, unified vision, undying support and most importantly, allowing us to coach, mentor, lead, build and empower our kids to build them into champions. It’s always an ELITE day to be a BLUE HAWK! FIGHT ROCK FIGHT! PROTECT THE ROCK

My senior season at Prosper was unlike any other year, for reasons we all know too well. But during this crazy year, this team became a family. We truly were brothers, and it showed in the way we played. The personal accolades and wins are always great, but the relationships you build with your teammates is what will last. This team will hold a special place in my heart forever, and I’m so thankful to have been blessed enough to play alongside them, in front of the best community in the state of Texas! - Aidan Siano, PHS

Children’s Health Stadium at Prosper ISD is “More than just a Stadium”. It is a place for our student athletes to compete and learn important life lessons. It is a place where they learn teamwork and what it means to rely on and fight for others that are close to them. It is a place for children and adults alike to congregate and bond as a community. It is a place where our leaders teach the ones around them to excel in everything they do. Our Stadium is a place for children to be a part of something that is so much bigger than just a game. You see, this stadium is about growth, it’s about change and it’s about community. As we all gather in this beautiful stadium, let us cherish these moments filled with smiles and laughter that touch our hearts. This place is more than just a stadium, this place is Prosper and this place is HOME. We Are Prosper! We are One! - Jason Reynolds, Cedarbrook Media
