A GRAND DAY OUT
Ali Gudgeon sat down with Andrew Howard, Head of Audience, Marketing & Sales at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre, to discuss the upcoming Pantomime, Cinderella and the enduring allure of live theatre
When you step into the Victorian splendour of the Blackpool Grand Theatre you will understand what people mean by ‘the glorious Grand’. There’s the incredibly ornate, gilded plasterwork, baroque ceiling, cavorting cherubs, cantilevered balconies allowing every elegant seat a clear view of the stage. Walking into the theatre literally takes your breath away!
Blackpool Grand is one of the few remaining theatres of great architectural character, designed by Frank Matcham and built in 1894. It has a magnificent four-level auditorium with 1,100 seats and a year-round programme covering everything from dance, drama, hip-hop, plays, opera, musicals and of course the much-loved annual Pantomime.
EVERY SINGLE PERSON GIVES BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS AS YOU WANT TO MAKE IT AS SPECIAL AS YOU CAN FOR EVERYONE VISITING
This year The Grand will showcase Cinderella, which runs 6th December – 5th January 2025. The production promises to be a dazzling spectacle, with a packed schedule of 51 shows across four weeks. With tickets starting at just £15, the idea is that theatre is accessible to all.
Andrew Howard, Head of Audience, Marketing & Sales at Blackpool Grand said: “Pantomime is a magical time. And we’re
thrilled to have such a talented cast, including West End star and Dancing on Ice champion Hayley Tamaddon and local Pantomime legend and Britain’s Got Talent finalist Steve Royle. It feels like our very own Fairy Godmother making our Christmas dreams come true!
“Pantomime is a real family affair, with often three generations coming together to enjoy the show. It’s heartwarming to see friends returning year after year, often to the same seats. It really is like an extended family at this time of year.
“Pantomime isn’t easy. It’s a massive undertaking but the passion and dedication of the entire team make it all worthwhile,” Andrew explains. “From the cast and crew to the front-of-house staff, everyone plays a vital role in bringing the magic to life. It takes a lot of effort putting it on as it’s a long production involving an army of dedicated people but it’s also very fulfilling. Every single person gives blood, sweat and tears as you want to make it as special as you can for everyone visiting.”
Cinderella’s production is a packed schedule. The theatre will welcome many thousands
of schoolchildren in early December. Andrew explains: “It’s a really important part of people’s Christmas, it’s a tradition and a highlight of the year for many schoolchildren. Pantomime is a brilliant first introduction to theatre. Every child should be able to experience the theatre.”
PANTOMIME IS A REAL FAMILY AFFAIR, WITH OFTEN THREE GENERATIONS COMING TOGETHER TO ENJOY THE SHOW
Beyond the glitz and glamour of Pantomime, Andrew believes in the transformative power of theatre. “Theatre can inspire, educate and entertain,” he says. “It’s a unique medium that can evoke a wide range of emotions and spark the imagination.” He highlights the importance of introducing young people to the theatre, emphasising the positive impact it can have on their development. “Theatre can teach valuable lessons, foster empathy and boost self-confidence,” he explains.
“The experience of live theatre is beyond magic. People will always remember the first show they ever see. In a theatre you can go through every emotion in one show. Shows include Pantomime, dramas, operas, hip-hop, plays, dance and musicals. There really is something for everyone. People shouldn’t be frightened of giving something a go. With theatre and the arts, push yourself out of
your comfort zone and try something new as there is such effort that goes into every single live production.”
Interestingly, Andrew highlights that last year’s crew and production for the Pantomime were 90 per cent female, in what can be seen to be a male dominated industry. “It’s certainly empowering and proves that anyone can do anything. It’s a poignant moment to see that transition over the years, now it’s the norm and it’s great to see.”
Plans are also in place for a special exhibition of the theatre’s rich heritage of Pantomime through the years. Archivists
at the theatre are delving into the past, right back to 1896 when the first Pantomime was staged.
The Blackpool Grand is not just a place to watch a show, it’s a piece of history. The theatre’s stunning architecture and intricate details require careful preservation. “The upkeep is massive,” Andrew admits. “From the specialist hand-made wallpaper to the intricate paintwork, every aspect of the building needs special attention.” The theatre is currently undergoing a huge renovation, following an award of £450,000 for repairs.
A survey of the Grade II* listed building last year found rainwater was leaking in through parts of the roof. The funding from Arts Council England will be used towards repairs of the building’s stone and brickwork, as well as making the theatre more accessible to visitors. The Victorian iron gutters are being restored and slate and lead will be replaced on the two acres of roof. The stone and brick work will also be replaced and repointed where it is damaged.
Andrew adds: “The emotional and financial investment in Pantomime is immense. From the countless hours of rehearsal to the significant costs of production, it’s a major undertaking. The support of our local community and generous patrons is crucial in keeping the Grand Theatre running. Pantomime is not just a beloved tradition, it’s a lifeline for many theatres, including ours and provides much-needed financial stability for the rest of the year.”
As the curtain rises on this year’s Pantomime, it’s clear that the Blackpool Grand is a vital part of the town’s cultural landscape. With its stunning architecture, talented performers and passionate staff, it’s a place where magic happens. As The Grand continues to evolve, Andrew and all The Grand team are committed to ensuring its future. By embracing innovation and staying true to its heritage, the theatre aims to remain a beloved destination for generations to come. n

SET YOUR SOUL ON FIRE
Lucas Everett is a man who knows where the heart of the home is and has spent his whole working life bringing the best stoves and fires to homes across the Ribble Valley, Lancashire and beyond, writes Katie Hammond. Photography: Kirsten Platt
What started as a small, familyrun business 36 years ago when his parents first opened the doors to Canterbury Fireplaces, has doubled in size over the past eight years under Lucas Everett’s watchful eye and it is now one of the largest fireplace showrooms in the UK.
The Canterbury team pride themselves on having something to suit every taste, but their unrivalled range of high-end fires and stoves has put them firmly on the map. Set over two floors, with more than 4,000 square feet of showroom, you can see all types of settings in 150 working displays, complete with every imaginable surround and finish.
On visiting the showroom, the latest innovative advancements of the industry are obvious as you take in the newest models from the Solus IX range, complete with holographic flames which almost look more authentic
than the real thing. The Solus electric range boasts cutting edge technology and along with instant heat, the fires can be customised with pre-set themes and choice of front, corner or panoramic aspects to best suit the setting – the range is also designed to be part of the increasingly popular media wall installations which Canterbury offer.
WE WERE RECENTLY INVITED TO THE RAIS SHOWROOM IN DENMARK AND WE WERE BLOWN AWAY. THERE’S EVEN AN APP WHERE THE STOVE CAN BE VIRTUALLY PLACED IN YOUR ROOM
The Vision Trimline range has been designed with the specific purpose of recreating an instinctive connectivity with nature. The innovative fires are skilfully
engineered to allow a true trimless aspect, with no distracting frames or visible workings, just fire, making them ideal for situating anywhere in the home.
The iconic Danish brand RAIS, as Lucas explains, is one of their most exciting collaborations to date: “We were recently invited to the RAIS showroom in Denmark for the release of the new range and we were blown away – they really are the Rolls Royce of the stove world and are fully customisable to our customers’ taste. There’s even an app where the stove can be virtually placed in your room at home so you can see it in situ and adjust the colours and fittings to your exact specifications.”
Renowned for their impressive range, also including Onyx, Gazco, Stovax, Charlton & Jenrick and Element4, Canterbury is also proud to be a Penman Premier Retailer, specialists in handcrafted marble and stone fireplaces. The Penman Collection presents a clearly distinctive range of fireplaces, stoves, and accessories that combines investment in design with quality materials and expert
craftsmanship, taking inspiration from classical design themes and infusing with a more contemporary feel.
This brings Lucas on to the importance of the whole service that the company provides: “Although we are known for the supply and fitting of beautiful fires, the fact that they are the focal point of family living means our customers have many different requirements when it comes to how they sit in their home.
OUR FOCUS HAS CHANGED OVER RECENT YEARS AS WE SAW THE NEED FOR A MORE COMPLETE SERVICE. WE OFFER FULLY TAILORED SOLUTIONS
“Our focus has changed over recent years as we saw the need for a more complete service. We offer fully tailored solutions –effectively holding hands with the customer through the whole installation process.
“Media walls have become increasingly popular, so we offer a full installation service and create bespoke joinery to create them around the fire – we often work with interior designers, architects and builders as part of overall home projects.”
From bespoke design to precision installation and the highest level of expertise at all stages,
the knowledgeable and friendly team pride themselves on attention to detail. An initial visit to the showroom gives customers a feel for the plethora of different options available to choose from and has a homely and welcoming feel.
“We have just completed £150,000 overhaul of the showroom as we wanted to truly showcase our fires and give customers a real feel of how they can be styled and built into the heart of their homes,” explains Lucas.
“We are very proud of what we do and all we have to offer. To partner with the likes of industry-leading British brands such as Penman and be recognised for our range and level of customer service and fitting as a Centre of Excellence and Expert Retailer by PureVision, Gazco and Stovax says everything about how far we have come as a business.” n

THE ROOT TO SUCCESS
it an ideal time to lift them from the ground and to move them to a new area. Lifting and transporting trees in the winter season gives the plants time to settle into their new area, after which, they are ready to wake up and sprout again in the spring.
If you are looking for high quality hedging plants and trees for your next landscaping project and shudder at the expensive potgrown prices at the local garden centre, there is a handy local alternative.
Bannister Hall Nurseries, based in Higher Walton Preston, specialises in the growing and sourcing of trees and hedging plants in root ball and bare root form. Unlike pot-grown trees and hedging plants, root ball and bare root plants are grown naturally in a field and then lifted in a dormant phase at certain times of the year. This offers numerous benefits for the consumer and a highly cost-effective solution for planting a hedge or tree line, especially when covering a larger area.
The root ball and bare root season runs from October to around March the following year. During the winter months, trees and shrubs enter a dormant period, which makes
ROOT BALL AND BARE ROOT PLANTS ARE GROWN NATURALLY IN A FIELD
Indeed, root ball refers to the bio-degradable hessian sack that encapsulates the ball of earth containing the root system of the plant when it has been lifted from the ground. When transported to its new location the plant and the sack containing its roots are planted as one, directly into the ground. The process is quick and fairly straight forward, and the success rates are usually high.
There are multiple benefits to planting hedging and trees in root balls, one of which is that they are already strong, healthy and mature plants with an established root system. This gives the plant a much better chance of survival whilst creating an ‘instant hedge’ at the size and species desired. This takes away the waiting for plants to develop and ‘knit’ into the desired density you require, and you almost have a fully grown hedge within a day of taking delivery.
As with root balls, bare roots are lifted from the ground during the winter months. They are generally younger plants, which are grown for a few years and then lifted from the ground. The roots need to be kept moist until planted in their new location. Once planted in a new area, bare root plants
will take time to grow and develop. Whilst they do not have the same immediate impact as the root ball alternative, come spring, there will be an abundance of thriving greenery. Bare roots come with stems of varying heights and with a healthy root system. With a bit of time and patience you will have a thriving hedge that will transform your garden and offer added privacy.
At Bannister Hall, customers are able to choose their trees and hedging in a wide variety of species and sizes at a greatly reduced cost from pot grown alternatives. Furthermore, qualified horticulturalists are on hand to advise you on the best species of root ball or bare root for your landscaping project. n

FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC
Gail Bailey chats to Andrew Dickinson of Bernard Dickinson Smart Home Solutions about their business ethos and their relationship with Ruark Audio
From working in his father’s business in the school holidays, Andrew Dickinson has continued the philosophy of the original company his father founded – and developed it further to ensure they stay one step ahead of today’s fast-paced and evolving technology.
“My father, who had been a radio technician in the Royal Airforce, started the business in 1959, driven by his love of listening to music at its very best. He started with a radio shop, and as the world of radio and television has developed so much over the years, so have we. I am proud that we have embraced the changes and have so much enthusiasm for the digital era and the benefits it brings,” Andrew explains.
Andrew and his team are keen to celebrate the relationship they have developed with Ruark Audio, a company that embraces the same values as Bernard Dickinson –a genuine family business that has grown over the years: “Ruark, like ourselves are a longstanding British company whose focus is on quality products and first-rate customer service,” says Andrew. “This, along
with the range of innovative systems they supply, is the reason we are proud to work with them.”
The father of Ruark’s founder, Alan O’Rourke was a cabinetmaker and in the 1970s when hi-fi systems were born, all speaker cabinets were made of wood. Andrew explains: “Alan’s father worked with some of the pioneering greats of British hi-fi, so he understood just how important materials and construction are to how a music system sounds.”
Ruark still apply these principles today when they update or design their products and create a wonderful blend of traditional and contemporary.
MUSIC SYSTEMS ALLOW US TO HAVE THAT EMOTIONAL CONNECTION WITH MUSIC THAT LOTS OF US REMEMBER
Some of the Ruark products available at Bernard Dickinsons include the R1, R2 and R3 which are a key range of audio systems: “When the R1 radio was launched in 2006 it was hailed as ‘the Aston Martin of DAB radios’ by the Sunday Telegraph,” explains Andrew. “This range then went on to evolve and now includes the R2 and R3 music systems which are hugely popular with our customers.”
The R410 is described by Andrew as a truly amazing product: “This system has a striking design,” he says. “It provides all
the connectivity you are ever likely to need and whilst streaming is its speciality, LPs or CDs can also be enjoyed with easy to access connections.”
And the very latest product to arrive at Bernard Dickinsons is Ruark’s R610 music console bringing this highly popular concept back and up to date: “The R610 which we are really thrilled to stock has been designed and crafted for sound – to bring people back to the joy of music,” says Andrew. “This is a key theme that Ruark and all at Bernard Dickinson share.”
Andrew really believes that the R610 plus Sabre-R Bookshelf speakers will be a major player to bring music back to the forefront: “Streaming is important, but we then miss so much of the wider music that is available and the younger generations are starting to realise this,” he says. “There is a place for both types of technology, but music systems allow us to have that emotional connection with music that lots of us remember – the LP sleeve used to be key and thankfully there is a return to having this wider attachment.”
Stunningly beautiful products, with amazing technology, delivering a perfect sound is the future of audio and both businesses are at the heart of it. Wireless technology, where multi-room audio connects all devices and all the major streaming platforms – with the added benefit of accessibility to play LPs and CDs – perfect!
Both Bernard Dickinson and Ruark Audio love sound and how it makes people feel, both believing passionately that the best sound is vital when it comes to bringing people closer to the excitement and emotion of music.
“Our learning hasn’t ceased since our early days and I know this is the same for Ruark,” says Andrew. “Technology and our clients’ desires have and continue to move us forward, creating and recreating spaces within homes to be proud of.” n
The stereo music centres of the 1970s started the hi-fi revolution and the new Ruark R610 Music Console brings this highly popular concept back and completely up to date. With comprehensive connection and streaming capabilities, the Ruark R610 has been designed and crafted for sound, to get people back to the joy of music.

Lucy Manfredi has been named as the one to watch in the art world and Lancashire gallery Heppletone is delighted to have been exclusively selected to represent her
Renowned gallery Hepplestone Fine Art is thrilled to announce that they have been selected as the UK’s exclusive dealer in the work of Lucy Manfredi – hailed as the rising star of the art world.
A member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Art, Lucy has been producing work that is ultimately collectible, as Giles Hepplestone explains: “Lucy’s work is very recognisable and is very much in demand. We are delighted to have signed her!”
Producing both townscapes and figurative work, Lucy comes under the genre broadly
known as the Northern School and has been likened to L S Lowry: “Her work is partly whimsical and has a touch of nostalgia about it. It is naïve in style and has an old school Northern charm.”
Often painting elderly ladies wearing glasses in everyday situations, Lucy has been tipped as ‘the one to watch’: “She is one of our great up and coming artists and at the moment her original work is still very accessible. The response we have had in our galleries to Lucy’s work has been outstanding.”
SHE IS ONE OF OUR GREAT UP AND COMING ARTISTS AND AT THE MOMENT HER ORIGINAL WORK IS STILL VERY ACCESSIBLE
Born in Stockport in 1974, Lucy has had a lifelong fascination with the creative arts, which continued throughout her education. She graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in Fine Art Illustration with
Animation and went on to complete a Masters in Brighton.
She worked in several artistic sectors before deciding that painting and drawing was her destiny and she now works from her studio in Cheshire.
A master of tone and composition, she captures the humour of Northern life in her paintings and art dealers across the UK have been raving about her work.
“She is becoming the talk of the industry,” adds Giles. “That’s why we expressed such excitement when we were chosen to represent Lucy.
“She was impressed with our extensive experience and our passion – I think our work
ethos aligned with hers and she thought we would be the best representatives for her.”
With demand for Northern art currently extremely strong, Lucy’s work has been lauded by well-respected figures within the art world.
LUCY COMES UNDER THE GENRE BROADLY KNOWN AS THE NORTHERN SCHOOL AND HAS BEEN LIKENED TO L S LOWRY
Legendary Hale art dealer Bill Clark, well known for showcasing L S Lowry originals, was recently interviewed in the Manchester
Evening News. When asked for his tip on who was the current rising star, he named Lucy Manfredi.
Founded in 2005 by father and son team Clive and Giles Hepplestone, the Hepplestone Fine Art Gallery was born from a passion for quality art.
As avid collectors, Clive and Giles have sought to bring affordable and collectable original paintings and high quality limited editions to their galleries in the grounds of Heskin Hall near Chorley and in Wilmslow.
As one of the UK’s leading retail galleries and twice winning the title of ‘Retail Art Gallery of the Year’ from the Fine Art Trade Guild, Hepplestone specialise in original paintings by Northern School artists, of which L S Lowry is probably the best known.
“The work of Lucy Manfredi aligns very well with us as a gallery,” explains Giles.
“It was very interesting to hear the interview with Bill Clark who had no hesitation in naming Lucy as a rising star. Her work is getting to be very investible and we are already planning a solo exhibition for 2025.” n

KEEPING YOUR HOME SAFE THIS WINTER
As winter sets in, the colder temperatures and shorter days create unique challenges for homeowners. By taking a few simple precautions, you can ensure that your home stays safe, secure and comfortable throughout the colder months
Start by ensuring that your home is well-prepared for the cold. Check for drafts around windows and doors and seal any gaps with weatherstripping or caulk to keep warmth inside and prevent energy loss. Insulating your home properly can also help protect pipes from freezing, a common issue during winter. Exposed pipes in unheated areas should be wrapped with insulation or heated tape to prevent them from bursting.
Your heating system needs attention as well. Have a professional inspect and service your boiler. Keeping your heating system running efficiently not only reduces the risk of breakdowns during a cold snap but also keeps your home at a comfortable temperature.
With the use of space heaters, fireplaces and holiday decorations, fire safety becomes especially important in winter. If you use space heaters, make sure they are placed on flat, stable surfaces and kept away from flammable materials. Always turn them off before leaving a room or going to bed. If you have a fireplace, have the chimney cleaned and inspected annually to prevent the build-up of creosote, which can lead to chimney fires.
WITH SHORTER DAYLIGHT
HOURS,
IT’S IMPORTANT TO KEEP YOUR
HOME SECURE DURING THE EVENING
With shorter daylight hours, it’s important to keep your home secure during the evening. Motion-sensor lights around your property can deter burglars and increase visibility. Timed security lights offer the option of switching on for a set period so can be on all night for a six-to-eight-hour period, though neighbours may need to be considered. Mains security lights are wired to your home’s electricity. Additional power consumption needs to be considered but you can often customise these lights more and have stronger bulbs in them. Hybrid security lights are a combination of features. These lights could be timed, solar powered, through the mains, motion sensored or a mix of them.
You might also consider installing a security system or using smart home devices to monitor your home remotely. By staying vigilant and addressing these winter-specific risks, you can ensure that your home remains safe and secure throughout the season. n

The doors are exceptionally energy-efficient, thanks to a unique thermal division that enhances the natural insulation of aluminium and steel. With a low U-value – the rate of transfer of heat through a structure – there will be little loss of heat.
When it comes to selecting the right front door for your home, there is a wide choice of colours and finishes both for the door and the matching hardware, so you can be confident your Gerda door will seamlessly complement your existing windows. Choose a solid colour or a wood finish with four hardware colour options and variety of handles. You can also expect the friendly, customer-focused staff at Lee Kelly to be on hand to help you find the perfect door for your home.
Pound for pound, Gerda categorically outclasses and outperforms any other door. They surpass competing products like the S200 Spitfire Door, Origin and Hallmark offerings.
Mark added: “The Gerda Door range complements our full collection of aluminium windows and patio doors and will look equally stunning with uPVC windows. We take pride in offering exclusive Gerda door installations to Preston and the surrounding areas. We welcome you to call in to view the range at our recently refurbished showroom where we can take care of every detail to install your beautiful new Gerda door.” n
Fuelmizas in Ribchester tells us all about the new generation of pellet stoves about to take the UK by storm and why they provide a great heating choice
Family run business Fuelmizas know a thing or two about keeping your home warm without spending a fortune on running costs. Nick Astley along with his wife Suzanne, owners of the business, are not only experts on wood burning stoves but also on the latest new pellet stoves about to arrive in UK.
Jøtul is one of Fuelmizas’ leading brands currently on display in the Ribchester showroom. World-renowned for its awardwinning portfolio of cast iron wood burning and multifuel stoves, it has just launched a collection of state-of-the-art new pellet stoves, and it’s these new arrivals that they will be shortly unveiling.
Nick explains why he is excited to introduce these pellet stoves to customers and why this type of stove is only just gaining the recognition it deserves in the UK: “Europe
and most Scandinavian countries have used pellet stoves for decades. They have always been well respected and sought-after in so many countries but not here in the UK. Traditionally the only UK available pellet stoves were difficult to fit and were large, ugly big black boxes which made a great deal of noise – none of which appealed to the discerning homeowner.
SIMPLY SET THE TIMINGS ON YOUR PHONE OR TABLET TO START YOUR STOVE BEFORE YOU ARRIVE HOME
“The new pellet stoves from Jøtul have turned all of those issues on its head – these are beautifully styled, clean burning, cost effective and very quiet. Each cleverly conceals the latest technology and innovations for quiet combustion, eco-conscious warmth and fabulous flame views. Designs vary from Scandi sleek through to retro good looks, all of which will be stunning focal points in both a contemporary modern or traditional classic home.”
The stoves have been developed to specifically deliver efficient and clean combustion, with over 90 per cent efficiency, as well as emission levels that rank among the lowest in the market, all proudly carrying the ECODESIGN 2022 labels and DEFRA exemption.
They are also one of the most effective, low environmental impact solutions to heat a home, providing homeowners with substantial savings on heating bills. Wood
pellets are also an organic fuel comprised of compressed sawdust and are 100 per cent natural, free of chemical additives and manufactured from waste product. Each stove will burn the complete pellets with very little ash for removal, helping to keep any maintenance to a minimum.
Auto ignition and auto draft management are also key features in the pellet stoves, along with the ability to programme heating times remotely from your smartphone’s app. Simply set the timings on your phone or tablet to start your stove before you arrive home and programme your preferred temperature. It’s so easy to set your stove to start before you get out of bed – no more waking up to a chilly house! n
Call into see the new pellet stove collection and chat with Nick direct – you will always be sure of a warm welcome!
For many, November and December is a time to enjoy the garden from the comfort of your home, but there are still jobs you can do to ensure your wildlife survives the winter
Even in the smallest garden it is possible to provide food, water and shelter from bad weather for common garden birds. If you have a balcony or small patio make sure hanging feeders are topped up. Birds will start to venture closer to the house as food supplies run out. In colder weather, cut a branch from a conifer and lay it on the ground to make an ‘umbrella’ that keeps an area free from frost and allows birds to find insects.
As much as you may like to, it is not a good time to remove or severely prune evergreens or shrubs with berries or hips as these provide more than just food for birds and mammals. Insects, including ladybirds, take cover in dense conifers which are also populated by smaller birds such as wrens for roosting on cold nights. So before you start any major winter garden activities take into account the disturbance to wildlife it may cause.
However, if you have evergreens and shrubs in your garden then you can make natural seasonal decorations for free by gathering your own greenery. Simply cut some berries and foliage to use in arrangements, door

wreaths and banister swags. Prepare cut stems by putting them straight into a bucket of water at room temperature for a couple of hours then cut them all again and crush the ends before giving them another soak in fresh water. Harvest whole cotoneaster branches or springs of berries to wire into wreaths but watch out for thorns if using pyracantha with its prolific berries ranging from pale yellow through to rich red. Holly berries with foliage provide the best effect in festive arrangements and can be coupled with shrubby shoots of ivy for a classic display.
Once you’ve taken your pick for seasonal decorations, you can always increase your stock for the coming years by taking some hardwood cuttings – one of the top jobs for gardeners this month. Other jobs include checking insultation on outdoor taps and preventing ponds from freezing. If your pond is stocked with fish and it does freeze over, melt the ice by placing a hot pan on the surface, or install a pond heater or water feature. n
WHAT THE EXPERTS
SAY:
The smell of a winter spruce, the warming taste of a spiced mulled wine and a seasonal wreath hanging from the front door – there’s no doubt the festive season is upon us. This may be the darkest month, but it won’t be long before the days begin to unfurl, lighting the way to spring. For many of us, it’s a time to reflect on the year’s gardening successes and failures as well as thinking about what we’ll do differently next season.

SKIN CANCER SAVIOUR Mohs surgery
Ihad a small blemish on my forehead that was worrying me. My daughter had been saying to get it checked because it had started bleeding and had got a bit bigger.
“I went to my GP, who thought it was a basal cell carcinoma (BCC). She said she could put me on the waiting list to have it removed on the NHS. It only sunk in a erwards that I probably had a skin cancer, and I decided to get it treated straight away. I called Discover Laser because they’ve looked a er my skin before.
“A er a consultation con rmed my GP’s diagnosis, I was scheduled for Mohs surgery with Dr Aslam at Discover Laser just two weeks later.
“On the day of my surgery, I received the usual warm welcome and was settled into their lovely waiting area. I wasn’t in the least bit nervous because I knew I was in the right hands and knew what would be happening.
“Dr Aslam removed my BCC in stages. Each time, he took the smallest amount of skin and biopsies were done to check if any cancer cells were le . I had three stages altogether to make sure they were all gone. I didn’t feel any pain at all, thanks to the local anaesthetic.
“During surgery, I felt completely at ease. I chatted with the surgical assistants and even got to choose what music I listened to, which was lovely. A erwards, Dr Aslam stitched me up, and I was allowed to go home. It was a long day, but I didn’t feel anxious because I was so well cared for, and my daughter was with me.
“A er three days, when my daughter took the bandage o , I was shocked to see the size of the wound compared to the size of the BCC, but I do know they travel under the skin.
“We followed the a ercare instructions, and I had no problems with infection. I did have some bruising and two black eyes, but the swelling was minimal. I went back to the clinic to have my stitches out, and their nurse, Deborah, did it with a great deal of care and with no pain at all.
Mohs surgery is the most effective technique for removing common skin cancers – one Discover Laser patient explains why the procedure gave her such peace of mind after a recent diagnosis
“Since then, the wound has carried on improving. I had some numbness, which Dr Aslam said might last 12 months, but that has gone. At my three-month follow-up with Dr Aslam, he was pleased with how the surgery had gone and how I’d looked a er the wound. I was surprised but very grateful to be given a thorough, full-body skin check to make sure there were no other areas of concern.
“I was told it would take 12 months for the pinkness to fully fade, but it’s already looking so much better. Now, eight months later, my scar is hardly noticeable. This is down to Dr Aslam’s skill as a surgeon and Discover Laser’s brilliant a ercare.
“Mohs surgery has given me peace of mind that there is only a one per cent chance of my BCC returning. The only thing to remember now is to wear factor 50 sun protection.
“I can’t say how grateful I am for the procedure. If you have a skin concern, I would recommend 100 per cent to go to Discover Laser for the best treatment possible.
“You know you are in professional hands, cared for, comfortable, reassured and you will be welcomed by the lovely, friendly team.” ■
NOW, EIGHT MONTHS LATER, MY SCAR IS HARDLY NOTICEABLE. THIS IS DOWN TO DR ASLAM’S SKILLS AS A SURGEON AND DISCOVER LASER’S BRILLIANT AFTERCARE.

It has been transformed into a stunning multi-million pound retreat that truly feels like a luxurious escape, even though it’s just a few minutes from Junction 11 on the M65. The original spa was already impressive, but this expansion has taken it to a whole new level.

The design is thoughtfully done, with natural materials and calming colours that enhance the feeling
of being surrounded by nature. I loved how they’ve integrated the outside elements, making it feel like a true woodland escape. MAKE YOUR SEASON SPARKLE
In the run up to the festive season, we’re all on the look-out for thoughtful gift ideas for family and friends. So, writes Katie Hammond, why not treat yourself to an afternoon out, turning back the clock to the days of the traditional department store to tick off all the wishes on your Christmas list?
Photography: Michael Porter
Ahistoric set of buildings nestled in the beautiful West Lancashire village of Tarleton has a rich history in retail, having previously been home to a family furniture business, passed down through the generations.
Back in 2013, business partners Jonathan Addis and Simon Yates viewed and fell in love with what became The Courtyard and set about transforming it into a destination department store, filling it with sought after brands they knew their customers would love.
Jon explains: “We had already developed our flagship store, Ena Mill in Atherton, a former cotton mill which we completely transformed into 45,000 square feet of retail space.
“As soon as we saw the beautiful old buildings in Tarleton, built around the Grade II listed barn, we saw the potential for a similar destination shopping experience. Our philosophy has always been that we want to offer the best brands possible for
the most affordable prices and this was very much what we wanted for The Courtyard.
“We also loved the idea of a quality department store as the whole ethos is that we can give our customers everything they are looking for under one roof, from women’s and menswear to gifts and beautiful things for the home – all with a traditional emphasis on old-fashioned customer service and an almost personalised shopping experience.”
WE LOVED THE IDEA OF A QUALITY DEPARTMENT STORE AS THE WHOLE ETHOS IS THAT WE CAN GIVE OUR CUSTOMERS EVERYTHING THEY ARE LOOKING FOR UNDER ONE ROOF
Cut to today and Jon and Simon have seen their vision become reality, with The Courtyard now playing host to hundreds of ranges, including many ladies-wear brands such as Apricot, Klass and Tog24, footwear that includes Rieker and ever-popular homeware stalwarts such as Yankee Candle, Julian Charles and Catherine Lansfield. A similar concept, Millstores in Cleveleys, was successfully opened by the duo earlier this year.
Simon continues: “We wanted The
Courtyard to become a true destination store, so our customers can enjoy an afternoon out browsing gifts, beautiful clothing and footwear, linens and bedding and then take a break from shopping to enjoy some of the fabulous food we have on offer in The Barn, our on-site fully licenced bistro and coffee shop. There’s something for everyone, with beautifully prepared food, ever-changing daily specials, cakes, coffees and snacks, all sourced from local suppliers. That’s something that has always been very important to us as we can work with and support other local businesses and be sure of the provenance of everything we are serving to our customers.”
Whilst the brands and the shopper’s whole experience of The Courtyard have been crucial to its success so far, as Jon and Simon are aware, particularly in the current financial climate, bargains and savings are more important to customers than ever.
Simon adds: “We work extremely hard to make sure our price points are accessible –this is particularly important in the run up to Christmas when money is tight for most households.
“We want customers to be able to shop safe in the knowledge that we pride
OUR PHILOSOPHY HAS ALWAYS BEEN THAT WE WANT TO OFFER THE BEST BRANDS POSSIBLE FOR THE MOST AFFORDABLE PRICES AND THIS WAS VERY MUCH WHAT WE WANTED FOR THE COURTYARD
ourselves on passing on as many savings as possible, so not only are they buying the best and most popular brands, they are also getting absolute bargains in the process –and who doesn’t love getting a great gift or buying that outfit for Christmas and getting a great deal at the same time?”
As Christmas approaches, it’s business as usual for The Courtyard team, ready to advise on everything from unique gift ideas for family and friends to festive occasion-wear and stunning decorations for the home.
With their gift department offering a choice of more than 4,000 cards, gifts can be chosen, purchased, wrapped and ready for Santa’s sack all in one go!
Open seven days a week, Monday to Saturday 10am to 5pm and Sunday 11am to 5pm and with customer parking on site as well as a huge free car park facing the store, it’s easy to see how shoppers make this beautiful department store shopping experience into a day out for all the family any time of the week and any day of the year.
Why not pay a visit and let The Courtyard take care of your family’s wish list this Christmas? n
WHY PROFESSIONAL ESTATE ADMINISTRATION IS ESSENTIAL
Processes around dealing with a deceased’s assets have changed considerably over the last couple of years. Elizabeth Whitaker, a senior associate at Forbes Solicitors, explains more
Over the last couple of years, processes around dealing with a deceased’s assets have changed considerably, some of which are aimed at making it easier for people to deal with estates without instructing a solicitor to assist.
It is a commonly held belief that fees charged by solicitors to deal with administering estates are very high and people often want to save money by dealing with it themselves. But what happens if something goes wrong? If an
Executor’s actions cause loss to the estate, they will be held personally liable, meaning that it might be worth looking more closely at what a solicitor can offer to help.
Estate administration can be complicated, particularly where there are multiple assets, assets overseas, properties, shares or a large number of beneficiaries. Where the deceased has not left a Will, this can mean further complications, as the law specifies who has the right to deal with the estate and receive the assets.
Executors in an estate are legally obliged to ensure that an estate is administered properly and in accordance with the law and they can be held personally responsible if they do not. In particular they need to ensure that they have dealt with the following:
1. Obtaining accurate values of estate assets.
2. Advertising for potential creditors.
3. Completing Inheritance Tax returns and ensuring tax is calculated correctly and paid on time. They need to be aware of exemptions, reliefs and nil rate bands to ensure that they report the estate correctly.
4. Applying for a Grant of Representation where it is needed.
5. Ensuring all liabilities are paid.
6. Dealing with property titles.
7. Identifying all beneficiaries, particularly where the deceased has not left a Will.
8. Accounting for tax during the administration period.
9. Producing estate accounts at the conclusion of the matter as is required by law.
Executors should also be aware of how much time estate management requires. Depending on the intricacy of the estate and the number of beneficiaries, the process may take months or even years to finish. A solicitor can assist with time management and guarantee that all responsibilities are completed effectively, lowering the possibility of delays. Working with legal experts allows Executors to concentrate on carrying out their duties without becoming bogged down in the specifics. Losing a loved one is difficult and it is often a very emotional time for all involved. It can be particularly challenging if certain beneficiaries are unhappy with the way the estate is divided or being dealt with. Executors must be neutral and ensure that the estate is dealt with in accordance with the law. It can often be helpful to have a professional assisting with the administration of an estate to ensure that the law is followed and that any tensions are dealt with fairly.
It is worth noting that legal fees are payable from estate funds, not by the Executors. At Forbes Solicitors we are able to tailor the extent of the work we do for Executors, assisting with as much as they want us to, whilst offering support to ensure that nothing is missed and to protect the Executor against potential mistakes and resulting liability. n

SIXTY YEARS OF GOLD
Chards Coin and Bullion Dealer, a family-run business with a rich history, has grown from humble beginnings to become one of the UK’s leading bullion dealers. Ali Gudgeon finds out more about the secret to its success
Founded in 1964 by Lawrence Chard, the business has grown from a small shop in Blackpool to one of the biggest bullion dealers in the United Kingdom. With expansions, including a prestigious London office in Hatton Garden, and a commitment to integrity, Chards offers unparalleled service and expertise, making it the premier choice for bullion investors.
Born and bred in Blackpool, Lawrence Chard realised from an early age that there was profit to be made from coins. The grandson of a penny arcade owner, Lawrence started
working in the family business at just seven years old. One of his first jobs was emptying the machines and sorting the coins on Blackpool Promenade and that is how Chards Coin and Bullion Dealer began!
I WAS JUST 20 YEARS OLD WHEN WE OPENED OUR FIRST PREMISES AND IT SERVED US WELL FOR OVER 40 YEARS, BUT WE EVENTUALLY OUTGREW IT
A regular customer to the arcades gave Lawrence and his cousin Robert Alan Chard a buying list of pennies and other British coins, and from this R. & L. Coins was born in 1964. A two-man business built on honesty, trust, transparency, and integrity opened in a tiny shop at 10 Dale Street. When Robert went to university aged 19 in 1965, he sold his share to Lawrence.
With a keen interest in numismatics and a commitment to ethical business practices, Lawrence continued to grow the business and hasn’t stopped since! A self-confessed workaholic, he is involved in every aspect of the business and it’s very much a family affair, with his wife, son and daughter all playing vital roles in the day-to-day running of the business.
Lawrence explains: “My work is very varied and can include grading coins, identifying
fakes, sales and purchases and of course financial planning. I keep up to date with all the latest business and industry news and of course world affairs.”
Thanks to his strong work ethic, Chards is now celebrating its 60th year in operation and with six decades of experience in the coin and bullion industry, Chards has become a trusted name in the Lancashire community and beyond.
Lawrence adds: “First opening in Blackpool in 1968, our Lytham Road location became a cornerstone of Chards Coin and Bullion Dealer’s operations, offering a wider range of products and more personalised service to our expanding clientele.
“I was just 20 years old when we opened our first premises and it served us well for over 40 years, but we eventually outgrew it. When our Lytham Road premises was being refurbished in 1968, two elderly ladies walked past and remarked, ‘that’ll never last!’ – we are pleased to have proved them wrong. In fact, we have probably outlived them!
“This new space allowed for a broader selection of bullion and collectible coins, meeting the growing demands of our customers. The opening of this store marked a significant expansion and demonstrated our commitment to adapting and growing with the market.”
As the digital age dawned, Chards embraced the opportunities it presented by launching an online platform in 1999. They were among the first in the UK to offer bullion products through an E-commerce site, setting a precedent for the industry.
After 50 years in business, Chards expanded to a new showroom in Harrowside in the seaside town and remains their current home. Now celebrating 60 years of trusted service, Chards Coin and Bullion Dealer opened a new office in London’s prestigious Hatton Garden in early 2024.
Lawrence adds: “This strategic move represents our dedication to providing unparalleled service to clients across the UK, with a physical presence in both the North and the South of England. The Hatton Garden office is poised to cater to a diverse clientele, offering the same level of integrity and expertise that has defined our business since its inception.”
CHARDS HAS A FORMIDABLE REPUTATION FOR RELIABILITY AND INTEGRITY IN THE BULLION INDUSTRY
Thanks to their commitment to providing exceptional service, backed by a wealth of experience and a strong family business ethos, Chards has a formidable reputation for reliability and integrity in the bullion industry. Earlier this year, Chards became a full member of the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), the independent authority overseeing the global precious metals market. Something not all its competitors can boast.
Lawrence also likes to share his knowledge and educate others. The company’s website houses a number of blogs, from a guide for UK bullion investors, through to exploring £100,000 in fake gold sovereigns. He also set up a YouTube channel where he shares
behind-the-scenes videos, words of wisdom and useful guides.
As Chards looks forward to the next 60 years, the company remains dedicated to providing the highest quality coins, bullion, and service to its customers. MIND MATTERS PART 2
In the second article on gaslighting, therapeutic coach Lynn Scholes explains how we can break free and recover from the controlling actions of the perpetrators
There isn’t a definitive, widely accepted statistic that breaks down the percentage of men versus women who engage in gaslighting. Gaslighting is a complex behaviour driven by the needs of the perpetrator.
It is often observed within the context of power dynamics, such as in abusive relationships and can be seen in both men and women. That said, cultural and social factors can influence the prevalence and perception of gaslighting.
Because of these complexities, it’s difficult to assign specific percentages to which gender engages more in gaslighting. The behaviour itself is more tied to power, control and individual personality traits than to gender alone.
In the second part of this explanation of gaslighting, I am going to talk about some of the tactics employed by perpetrators. Later we will discuss the tactics of recovery.
Often the biggest challenge to recovery is that by the time a person understands what is happening, their confidence and self-esteem
can be badly damaged. If you suspect a friend, family member or colleague may be a victim of gaslighting, slowly and gently try to get them to open up and discuss their thoughts, feelings and fears. Encourage them to get help. Unless you feel they are in danger, do not try to take over and make decisions on their behalf. Try to support them to make their own decisions and take appropriate action.
TYPICAL TACTICS
• DENIAL OF REALITY: The gaslighter insists that something did not happen or that the victim is misremembering events.
• COUNTERING: The perpetrator questions the victim’s memory or interpretation of events, often with misleading information.
• WITHHOLDING: The gaslighter pretends not to understand or refuses to listen to the victim.
• TRIVIALISING: They belittle or dismiss the victim’s feelings and concerns. For example: “You’re overreacting or you’re being too sensitive.”
• DIVERTING: The gaslighter changes the subject or questions the victim’s thoughts, thus diverting the conversation.
• FORGETTING OR DENIAL: They pretend to forget events or deny they happened.
• PROJECTION: The gaslighter accuses the victim of the very behaviour they are exhibiting.
TAKE BACK CONTROL
• RECOGNISE THE SIGNS: Awareness is the first step. Acknowledge that gaslighting is happening and that it is a form of manipulation.
• REBUILD SELF-TRUST: Engage in activities that strengthen your confidence and self-esteem. Trust your instincts.
• SET BOUNDARIES: Clearly define what behaviour you will not tolerate. Communicate these boundaries and stick to them. Only do this if you feel confident the perpetrator will not react aggressively to being challenged.
• LIMIT OR CUT OFF CONTACT: In cases of severe gaslighting, it may be necessary to distance yourself or cut ties with the perpetrator.
• THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS: Professional therapy can provide tools and strategies to cope with the effects of gaslighting.
• EDUCATION: Educate yourself about gaslighting and narcissistic behaviours. By understanding these tactics and employing recovery strategies, individuals can regain their sense of reality and autonomy, fostering healthier relationships and emotional well-being.
Once you have taken back control of your life and rebuilt your confidence and self-esteem, I strongly suggest that you take a look at how you got into that relationship? If the gaslighting was the perpetrator’s response to a particular event and those behaviours were not there from the start of the relationship, that is one scenario. However, it is worth checking that you were not drawn into a manipulative relationship, and if you were, why? The only way to ensure it doesn’t happen again, is to understand and resolve the deep-seated reasons behind it. Gaslighting can put a person in a lonely and scary place. However, it is absolutely possible to regain and rebuild your life and learn from the experience. n

Vienna, 11th November to 26th December 2024
The Austrian capital has several Christmas markets, the best of which is the traditional ‘Vienna Magic of Advent’ event in City Hall Square, accessed via a candlelit archway.
DISCOVER THE BEST CHRISTMAS MARKETS
Preston-based travel expert, Joanne Wilson, shares this season’s top Christmas market destinations
One of the best things about late November and December is getting into the festive spirit and I can’t think of a better way to embrace the season than shopping for unique Christmas gifts on a European city break, at a fabulous festive market. Some of my clients have even made it a yearly family tradition! Here’s my must-visit Europe Christmas markets for 2024, with some continuing into early January if you want to keep the festive feel going.
Berlin, 25th November to 30th December 2024
Normally on the Gendarmenmarkt but held on Bebelplatz this year between the Berlin State Opera and St. Hedwig’s Cathedral, WeihnachtsZauber is my favourite among Berlin’s Christmas markets. I rate it for its ambiance and its tented artisan village, with local wood carvers and other craftspeople showing off their skills. There are also captivating performances by jugglers, fire eaters and musicians with traditional German dishes served in a heated restaurant area. Other top sights to see are Museum Island, the Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie.
Kraków, 29th November 2024 to 1st January 2025
This southern Polish city oozes character all
year round, with its well-preserved medieval core and Jewish Quarter to explore. But it’s especially charming at this time of year when its main square, Rynek Główny, is taken over by market stalls, street performances, folklore shows and live regional music. Sample Polish treats such as Grzaniec (local mulled wine) and don’t miss the famous Christmas Crib Contest dating back to the early 19th century.
Prague, 30th November 2024 to 6th January 2025
Of all the Czech capital’s Christmas markets, the one in the Old Town Square stands out for its spectacular cathedral views. As well as snapping up local crafts, you can feast on national specialties such as roast pork, gingerbread and Trdelník (a kind of cake wrapped around a stick, topped with sugar and walnuts) while listening to carols and other live music. The castle, cathedral and Charles Bridge are also unmissable.
Here, you will also find the city’s best rink, Vienna Ice World, with its trail through the gorgeously illuminated City Hall Park. Don’t miss the multi-level carousel, reindeer train and nativity scene trail, in addition to all the crafts and food stalls.
Edinburgh, 17th November 2024 to 5th January 2025
One of the most popular markets in Europe sees Princes Street Gardens transformed into a wonderland with the Big Wheel with city views, the magical ‘Santa Train’, classic funfair rides such as a helter-skelter and enticing stalls. Other highlights include an illuminated walkway with Edinburgh Castle and Old Town views and installations such as Edinburgh’s Nativity Scene.
Whatever you’re doing and wherever you go, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and New Year and please don’t hesitate to contact me for all of your travel enquiries. n
As Christmas approaches and the dark, wintry nights are here to stay, Tim Dixon, Fylde Council’s Tourism and Cultural Services Manager gives us the lowdown on what to look out for in the Fylde
How this year has flown by and we now find ourselves in the festive period! It’s been a very busy year full of events taking place all over Fylde from the popular Lytham Festival, the St Annes Kite Festival, the St Annes Music Festival, the Lytham 1940s Weekend and
Club/Gala Days around the area. Plus, we’ve had a packed programme at the Lowther Pavilion, Fairhaven Lake and also Lytham Hall, not to mention lighting the beacon at Fairhaven Lake for the 80th anniversary of the D Day landings back in June.
COMING UP VERY SHORTLY, THE TOWN CENTRES IN FYLDE WILL HAVE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS OR EVENTS TO START THE FESTIVE PERIOD
Coming up very shortly, the town centres in Fylde will have Christmas lights or events to start the festive period – Lytham on 16th November, Kirkham on 23rd November and St Annes on 30th November – these being
organised by the hard-working business or community groups to bring a festive cheer to start this very special time of year. There will once again be many Christmas markets in village or community halls, schools and more, so keep an eye out on Facebook, or those we know about we will post on our events listings page (see web link below).
Lytham Hall is always a special place to visit at any time of year, but during the festive season when decorated with the most fabulous Christmas displays, it really is something else! They have some great events listed on their own website, plus you can always walk around the grounds, enjoy refreshments at the café or perhaps enjoy a festive tasty treat. They update their website very frequently so do keep an eye as to what’s in store.
This year’s panto at the Lowther Pavilion in Lytham is Snow White and runs from 2nd December to 4th January and is a wonderful family trip out with plenty of laughs and fun guaranteed for an unforgettable experience. Tickets are available via the Lowther Pavilion website. They have a packed programme through November and December including brass, comedy, cinema, country and jazz to name but a few. There really is something for everyone.
Do visit the independent shops all around Fylde – they can offer that personal touch and you can get those presents ideal for the Christmas lists – whether home-made gifts, chocolates and housewares, plus there’s a Shop Local in Fylde Loyalty card with details at investinfylde.co.uk. n

GETTING YOUR AFFAIRS IN ORDER
Katy Shakeshaft, wills and probate specialist at Farleys Solicitors, gives her advice on estate planning
Getting organised? Putting all your ducks in a row? Sorting your life out? However you phrase it, we all hit a point where we want to step back from our busy lives and ensure our affairs are in order. Ensuring your loved ones are protected when you’re no longer around should rank high on that to-do list.
Have you considered what would happen to your assets when you pass away? Perhaps you have a will in place, but it hasn’t been revised to take into account recent life events or new, significant assets. Do you have plans in place for small children or pets if you are no longer around?
WHAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN A WILL?
When you’re drafting or revising a will, there are certain things you should ensure are included:
• Physical assets – This can include everything from small personal items such as jewellery and sentimental possessions but also sizable assets like real estate and business. You can be specific by leaving assets to certain people or include a wider provision passing classes of items to named beneficiaries or classes of beneficiaries.
IF YOU ARE A PARENT TO CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 18, INCLUDING PROVISION FOR THEM OR ANY FUTURE CHILDREN IN YOUR WILL IS IMPORTANT
• Digital assets – In an increasingly digital world, many of our assets can be found in a digital format, such as online storage accounts, social media accounts, betting accounts and content stored on smartphones or computers. This also includes online bank accounts and digital cryptocurrency. If digital assets are not specified in a will, it can be incredibly difficult and
sometimes costly for loved ones to gain access to them.
• Provisions for children – If you are a parent to children under the age of 18, including provision for them or any future children in your will is important. You can set out your wishes for guardian(s) to take care of your children and include wishes for where they might live, go to school and how they receive your funds.
• Provision for pets – In the same way as provisions for children are specified in a will, you can include your wishes for your pets too. This might include who they live with and designated funds to support that arrangement.
• Funeral plans – If you have specific wishes for your funeral, for example, whether you want to be buried or cremated, we advise these are included in your will.
This is just a brief overview of what you should consider when drafting or reviewing a will. We would always advise that you instruct a solicitor to ensure that nothing important has been missed. n

ILLUMINATING WALK
Local writer and walking enthusiast, Steve Garrill, takes us on a coastal walk in Blackpool. Photography: Gregg Wolstenholme
Squires Gate to Bispham (5.2 miles)
You can choose how far you walk and then get the tram back (38 stops between Star Gate and Fleetwood). This is part of the King Charles III England Coast Path and Lancashire Coastal Way. Easy walking and great in any weather.
Wheelchair/pushchair start from the next stop at the Pleasure Beach as there are steps up from Squires Gate Station.
1. From Squires Gate railway station go up the steps, cross Squires Gate Lane and turn left down towards the sea. If you turn right, you’ll reach Blackpool Airport.
2,584 Wellington Bombers were built on a site at the airport (the hangars are still there and used as commercial premises). Blackpool was the RAFs biggest training camp.
2. Cross the road and join the path around the back of the new tram sheds along the new sea wall. The tram sheds are the terminus of the Blackpool to Fleetwood tram service.
The tramway runs from Blackpool to Fleetwood and dates back to 1885. It is the second oldest electric tramway in the world and runs for 11 miles.
3. Continue along the sea wall. After less than half a mile you’ll reach the Mirror Ball. The Mirror Ball was created by artist
Michael Trainor in 2002 and, at 6 metres in diameter, is the world’s biggest.
4. Continue along the promenade and you will pass the Pleasure Beach before reaching the Sandcastle Water Park then South Pier.
Blackpool Pleasure Beach opened in 1896 and covers 42 acres. The Big One, which opened in 1994 is the tallest rollercoaster in the UK and the longest in Europe.
South Pier was built wider and shorter than the other two piers at a cost of £50,000. It opened in 1893 and was originally called Victoria Pier.
5. After less than a mile you reach the Manchester pub on the right.
To visit Tramtown, turn right and follow the tramlines the short distance to Tramtown. This is where the fleet of Heritage trams is maintained by volunteers.
6. Pass Central Pier, the RNLI station and Blackpool Tower.
Central Pier was opened in 1868 with the emphasis from the start being on fun.
The RNLI station is open to visitors and is one of only two RNLI stations to house three inshore lifeboats.
Blackpool Tower opened in 1894 and was modelled on the Eiffel Tower.
7. Shortly after this you reach Tower Festival Headland.
Tower Festival Headland was built as part of the new sea defences and can accommodate up to 20,000 people. Each year it hosts the World Fireworks Championship and the Blackpool Illuminations Switch On.
8. Continue to reach North Pier.
North Pier, built in the 1860s, is a Grade II listed building. It is the oldest and longest of the three piers. It has survived storms, fires and boats colliding with it.
9. After North Pier, bear left to walk along the Lower Walk (unless it’s a very high tide). After one mile bear right up to Middle Walk and continue to pass to the right of the public toilets. Take a right and left to enter Jubilee Gardens.
10. After exiting Jubilee Gardens continue for a further mile along the cliff top to reach Bispham and the end of the Illuminations – enjoy! n

One of the most enchanting parts of a visit to Ribby Hall Village is The Santa’s Grotto Experience. Little ones can meet Santa’s friendly elves, write out their Christmas wishes, and enjoy a special moment with Santa himself.

DISCOVERING THE CHARM OF KIRKHAM
Taking a stroll through the pretty town of Kirkham, which is rich in history and thriving with new energy, Ali Gudgeon spoke to the locals and was impressed at the changes.
Photography: Roger Moore
On my recent visit to Kirkham, I was immediately struck by how this pretty historic Lancashire market town blends its rich past with a vibrant present. Walking through the streets, I couldn’t help but notice the many signs of regeneration, from beautifully restored historic shopfronts to modern public spaces that invite both locals and visitors to enjoy the town’s unique charm.
Kirkham’s history is everywhere, woven into its fabric. As I strolled around, I was drawn to the grand architecture of Kirkham Grammar School, which dates back to 1549 and the impressive St. Michael’s Church, which stand as testament to the town’s deep-rooted heritage. I learned from the locals that Kirkham has been a significant
settlement since Roman times, but its transformation in the 17th century into a bustling textile hub was what really shaped its identity. The old mills that once powered the town’s sailcloth and cotton industries have almost gone but Progress Mill has been repurposed. It’s fascinating to see how relics of the past have been preserved, such
as the fish stones in the square, adding to Kirkham’s charming character.
One of the most memorable features of the town are the new vibrant murals and the talking trail, part of a heritage initiative funded by Historic England. These artistic additions bring Kirkham’s history to life in such a modern and accessible way, great for a family focused history hour. The locals spoke with pride about these projects, which not only celebrate the town’s past but are attracting visitors who are keen to learn more about its rich history.
ONE OF THE MOST MEMORABLE FEATURES OF THE TOWN ARE THE NEW VIBRANT MURALS AND THE TALKING TRAIL
Kirkham’s strong sense of community was clear to see, the list of events and markets hosted each year is amazing. I happened to be a week late for the first Kirkham Pride which apparently went down really well with everyone. The Christmas Lights and Market is set for 23rd November. Everyone is already buzzing about it, with over 40 local vendors getting ready to showcase their
food, arts, and crafts. Live music and festive displays are planned, promising a magical atmosphere that always brings the community together. The regular Thursday Market, though small, still has a lively energy, with traders offering fresh produce and unique local goods. And they hope to grow this market for the locals.
What stood out to me were the independent shops and cafes that give Kirkham its personality. One place I had to visit was Serendipity House, which I found out later had proudly won the 2023, North, N. Ireland & Scotland, Independent Gift Retailer of the Year award. And then there’s Book, Bean & Ice Cream, a quirky known spot for its book signings and delicious cakes – apparently, even astronaut Tim Peake stopped by recently! The local businesses here really give the town its heart, each one offering something unique and you can tell they’re a vital part of Kirkham’s now thriving high street. Kirkham’s recent regeneration is hard to miss. The restoration with a modern twist of the town’s historic core has been a major focus, with projects like the new Market Square breathing new life into public spaces.
The square has been transformed into a vibrant hub, perfect for events, markets and gatherings. New pedestrian-friendly spaces, better lighting, and public art, make it feel welcoming and modern without losing its traditional charm. Two prominent historic buildings in the town, the former Girls School on Poulton Street and Hillside, on Preston Street, a former mill owners house, have also been purchased and are being lovingly renovated. Both are searching for business tenants in this bustling rural town.
THE
SQUARE HAS BEEN TRANSFORMED INTO A VIBRANT HUB, PERFECT FOR EVENTS, MARKETS AND GATHERINGS
Sustainability seems to be a big part of Kirkham’s future. Several locals mentioned energy-efficient infrastructure and eco-friendly initiatives that have been introduced as part of the town’s revitalisation. And the improvements don’t stop at the town centre. Kirkham’s green spaces are beautifully maintained, thanks in large part to the dedicated In-Bloom team, who ensure the
town is always brimming with flowers. I was also impressed by the upgraded paths and play areas, which make the town even more inviting for families and visitors.
As I wandered through Kirkham, it became clear that the town is not just about preserving its history – it’s also about moving forward. Local businesses have been supported with grants to improve their premises and adapt to modern needs and the ‘Shop Local’ loyalty card scheme was a hit with residents, rewarding them for supporting their town’s high street. I heard from more than one shop owner how these initiatives have made a real difference in keeping Kirkham’s retail scene thriving. By the end of my visit, it was easy to see why Kirkham holds such appeal. It’s a town that embraces its past while actively shaping its future. Whether you’re drawn by its history, its community spirit, or its growing cultural scene, Kirkham offers something for everyone. I left with a sense that this is a place with a very bright future, where tradition and progress go hand in hand. n

With the rise of remote work, professionals are breaking free from the constraints of the 9-to-5 grind, embracing flexibility, and seeking alternative work environments that cater to their evolving needs
Together Workspace is a new co-working, flexible space business in Kirkham that believes the future workforce will require spaces that allow you to choose where, when and how you work to best fit around your life.

LACROSSE TEAM SUCCESS
The Bolton School Girls’ Division Senior Lacrosse Squad has secured victory in the Northern Schools’ Championships for the seventh year in a row. Some of the Year 13 girls in the squad have won this tournament, and the title of Northern Schools’ Champions, every year since they started playing lacrosse in Year 7! Their victory marks the first time that Bolton School has achieved such an extraordinary run of success over consecutive years. This year’s Northern Schools’ Championships was hosted by Queen Margaret’s School in York. The Bolton School team faced fierce competition from Birkenhead School in an intensely competitive final.
UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC RECEIVES OBE
A University of Central Lancashire dental academic has received his OBE from His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. Peter Dyer travelled to Windsor Castle to accept the prestigious award for his services to the dental and medical professions, as well as his local communities of Silverdale and Lancaster from Prince William. The Clinical Senior Lecturer in Oral Surgery, who was granted the honour in the King’s 2024 Birthday Honours’ list, said: “It was dreamlike but also felt so personal too. It still feels like it’s not sunk it yet.” Peter is a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon with a special interest in facial trauma, orthognathic surgery and oral medicine.
TIM PEAKE INSPIRES STUDENTS
Westholme School’s INSPIRED Sixth Form physicists and further mathematicians had an unforgettable experience, meeting the first British astronaut to visit the International Space Station, Tim Peake. As well as promoting his new book, Tim took the time to talk to the Sixth Form scientists who were able to ask him a variety of questions concerning several topics, including his personal training, his insight into the future of space exploration with AI and increasing equality in the industry. A truly ‘out of this world’ experience!
PARALYMPIAN MARK DIVES BACK IN
Westholme School recently welcomed back former student and recent Paris Paralympian swimmer, Mark Tompsett, to inspire current pupils with his achievements. Mark, who won bronze in the men’s 100m backstroke at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, returned to meet with Prep students and with him, he brought several pieces of Paralympic memorabilia. His impressive bronze medal was presented in a Louis Vuitton box and contained a small piece of the Eiffel Tower. Mark made time to answer lots of questions and meet some students on the current Westholme swimming team.

TRANSFORMING FUTURES
A
significant investment in the new Higher Line provision at Stonyhurst College is transforming the Sixth Form experience, catering to the evolving needs of today’s young adults
The innovative Sixth Form space at Stonyhurst provides senior pupils with transformative opportunities, unlocking a diverse array of educational and career pathways. This thoughtfully designed environment combines a structured and comprehensive timetable with a strong emphasis on promoting independence
The investment in the Sixth Form (Higher Line) areas significantly enriches the curriculum, facilitating pupils’ seamless transition to university and the professional world. At the core of Higher Line is the Stonyhurst ethos of nurturing ‘men and women for others’, which fosters leadership among pupils.
For 16 to 18-year-olds, joining the Sixth Form at Stonyhurst gives them a new perspective, presenting them with a chance to flourish and discover career paths that align with their interests.
The newly designed common rooms, known throughout the College as ‘Playrooms,’ feature dedicated study areas and inviting relaxation spaces.
STONYHURST’S STRONG ALUMNI NETWORK CONNECTS YOUNG PEOPLE WITH GLOBAL LEADERS WHO OFFER VALUABLE INSIGHTS AND GUIDANCE IN THEIR RESPECTIVE FIELDS
PLAYROOMS & STUDY AREAS
The term ‘Playroom’ is a long-held tradition at Stonyhurst and is derived from the emphasis on drama within a Jesuit education.
The new Poetry (Year 12) and Rhetoric (Year 13) Playrooms have been created to encourage study and interaction. The areas
are bright and contemporary, thoughtfully designed to reflect the typical working environments of the 21st century.
A global perspective is a defining feature of the school, particularly within Higher Line, where pupils are not only prepared for their next educational or career steps but are empowered to explore opportunities around the world.
One of the expansive new areas evokes a classic Oxford-style university common room, creating a prestigious yet comfortable environment. It features traditional leather Chesterfields and walls adorned with historic Stonyhurst photographs, while other spaces embrace a more relaxed, contemporary university campus feel.
COLLABORATIONS
Collaboration is key to the new Higher Line zones where pupils and teachers work together, as Assistant Head Edward Allanson explains:
“In today’s environment employees or university students may not have their own workspace, they may be ‘hot desking’ so pupils need to be prepared to adapt to different spaces to work effectively.
“The new Higher Line spaces empower pupils to collaborate on various projects in group settings. These distinctive areas encourage a sense of independence, distinguishing senior pupils as they take charge of their learning experience.’’
In addition to the new Higher Line areas, Sixth Formers have access to further spaces for independent study, including Stonyhurst’s historic libraries, cultivating a spirit of autonomy in their academic pursuits.
CURRICULUM
New Sixth Formers joining the College in Year 12, in addition to those who have had the advantage and continuity of a Stonyhurst education from a young age, are offered three different routes of study – as opposed to the traditional single A level route.
Study options include the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, A levels and the Cambridge Technical Diploma (CTEC) in Sport or Business.
These three pathways provide flexibility, allowing for tailored programmes that align with each pupil’s learning profile, university goals and future career aspirations.
“Depending on the year group, around a third to a half of pupils go down the IB route,” explains Mr Allanson.
“It’s an amazing course with a global approach – it is an important part of who we are at Stonyhurst.”
The Class of 2024 achieved an impressive average of 145 UCAS points, which equates to three A grades at A level, highlighting the exceptional academic standards at Stonyhurst.
UNIVERSITY PREPARATION
Stonyhurst pupils benefit from a dedicated Careers Department that provides an extensive range of resources and expert advice to help them navigate their future choices. Engaging assemblies are held to explore various career paths and university options, including opportunities at institutions worldwide and apprenticeships. Stonyhurst’s strong alumni network connects young people with global leaders who offer valuable insights and guidance in their respective fields.
The Careers Department at Stonyhurst is an invaluable resource. The team assists pupils in preparing for their futures beyond Stonyhurst, providing insight into a variety of options and empowering them to make informed decisions.
Mr Allanson adds: “We collaborate closely
with organisations to stay informed about industry trends, ensuring that our pupils leave Stonyhurst fully prepared for the future.’’
UNICORN COFFEE SHOP
The newly created Higher Line spaces include the Unicorn Coffee Shop, formerly a common room, which has been transformed into an exclusive haven for Sixth Form pupils to relax, socialise and enjoy snacks or a light lunch—distinct from the main College refectory. This vibrant environment radiates the lively atmosphere of a high street coffee shop.
WE COLLABORATE CLOSELY WITH ORGANISATIONS TO STAY INFORMED ABOUT INDUSTRY TRENDS, ENSURING THAT OUR PUPILS LEAVE STONYHURST FULLY PREPARED FOR THE FUTURE
LEADERSHIP AND MENTORING
Although the new space is designated for Higher Line, interaction between senior and younger pupils is promoted. Sixth Formers are encouraged to cultivate vital leadership
skills through a pupil-led initiative called Stonyhurst Line Families, designed to connect pupils across all year groups. “There is no superiority attached to Higher Line as every pupil is an essential part of the College,” explains Mr. Allanson.
Mentoring and mixing with younger pupils has formed a crucial part of the recent integration of Years 7 and 8 into the main college building – bringing the College in line with other educational settings. The 11 and 12-year-olds, formerly accommodated in Stonyhurst’s Prep School, now have dedicated classrooms and Playrooms known as Aloysius House: “The Sixth Formers have played a major part in welcoming Year 7 and 8 pupils to the College, talking them through the way things work.
“For Higher Line, this gives the senior pupils a real sense of supporting the younger ones, a tangible sense of leadership that works on every level.” n

SERIOUS FUN
The inspirational co-curricular programme at Westholme helps pupils develop important life skills, but it also gives the school community the opportunity for some serious fun
Delivering an all-round education provides pupils with many and varied skills and attributes, as well as the advantages of being academic high achievers.
At Westholme School, the mission is to develop the whole child through a wide range of world class opportunities, inside and outside the classroom.
Students develop robust life skills that allow them to thrive and succeed whatever their interests, as Principal Paul Taylor explains: “Pupils develop their skillsets and personalities so that they are ready for the challenges of later life. Our pupils also learn to take responsibility for themselves and for those around them, fostering values that generate young people who are ready to make an impact on the world around them.”
A rich programme of co-curricular activities at Westholme has been developed to complement the academic provision.
“Whether it’s in performing arts or sport or one of many other opportunities, these are often the times when pupils develop their personalities and what we at Westholme know as the 21st century essential skills,” adds Mr Taylor, who was previously Head of Kings’ School Al Barsha in Dubai.
“We focus on the all-round development of every individual child and ensure that the right level of support and challenge is in place.”
Focusing on new experiences, Westholme’s co-curricular programme includes visits from inspirational professionals as well as a whole host of opportunities for pupils to become involved in various activities including the performing arts.
ASTRONAUT TIM PEAKE
During World Space Week, astronaut Tim Peake recently spoke to Westholme Prep along with pupils from 25 local primary schools about his space travels.
Sharing first-hand experiences, Tim recounted his path from a sky-gazing child to British Army pilot and then to becoming the sole British astronaut selected by the European Space Agency.
His young audience was captivated as he told stories of his time aboard the International Space Station (ISS) during 2015-16, where he saw 16 sunrises and sunsets daily and
took part in the thrilling challenge of an eight-hour spacewalk.
He spoke about the food he ate on board and the numerous events he took part in from space that were televised back on earth, including a countdown to the London Marathon, presenting a Brit Award and kicking off the rugby Six Nations.
WE FOCUS ON THE ALL-ROUND DEVELOPMENT OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL CHILD
Concluding with a lively Q&A session, he ignited students’ interest further with his hope of joining an all-UK crew on a future mission.
“It was incredibly exciting to have Britain’s first ISS astronaut join us at Westholme,” says Mr Taylor.
“Tim’s visit left lasting impressions, encouraging young minds to explore their full potential.”
ALADDIN JR
Lower Senior performing arts students certainly explored their full potential when they showcased their musical and theatrical talents in the dazzling Aladdin Jr. The audience in Westholme’s Croston Theatre were thrilled by the magical adventure – the story of Aladdin is a tale packed with courage, adventure and magic, and the talented students gave it their all!
The stage looked fantastic with lighting effects and a backdrop that transformed the space into an Arabian landscape. The students captured the atmosphere of the story perfectly and there was even a flying carpet!
With such a high-calibre, co-curricular
programme, Westholme pupils are given the opportunity to flourish, to discover what they enjoy and find where their talents lie.
Mr Taylor concludes: “Our mission at Westholme is to develop better students and better people. This is serious work, but our community of pupils, teachers and parents also have serious fun.” n

ensures the highest standards of quality and customer care. Dan Collinson, with his entrepreneurial background, has spearheaded the brand’s vision and design. And Tom Kidd, a talented designer, has brought Yoovy’s aesthetic to life.
A trio of Lancashire entrepreneurs are revolutionising the eyewear industry with their new online brand, Yoovy. The new elegant eyewear combines Italian craftsmanship with British style, as Ali Gudgeon finds out
An idea born and cultivated here in the North West and handmade in Italy, Yoovy eyewear offers a premium, stylish range of both spectacles and sunglasses exclusively available online, with standards set by opticians alongside style led by Italians.
The elegant eyewear encompasses a timeless design aesthetic using the highest quality materials and components, combined with artisanal Italian workmanship and the latest technology to create a curated range of spectacles and sunglasses, including prescription, that give discerning clients access to luxury eyewear from their own home.
The founders, all hailing from Lancashire, bring a wealth of experience and passion to Yoovy. Paula Burrows, a seasoned optician,
Paula explains: “Think of an understated style that makes a statement without having to scream it. Our Yoovy eyewear is designed to last and presents optician-led quality with the best protection and performance, as well as guaranteeing style.”
Available exclusively online, the customer journey is simple and informative with a UK qualified optician available for advice on prescriptions and personal requirements. Non-prescription orders including sunglasses are despatched within three to five days. Prescription orders are usually despatched within three to five days of receipt of prescription. Delivery is via Royal Mail and free within the UK.
Yoovy offers six unisex styles in its first curated range launched recently, available in both prescription or non-prescription
for sunglasses and spectacles. Each style is available in a choice of four colourways, black, tortoise, grey and green.
Prices start from £145 for non-prescription sunglasses. Standard prescription glasses start from £155.
The idea for Yoovy was sparked by adversity, when, back in December 2022 optician Paula Burrows’ independent high street optician practice in Garstang was catastrophically damaged from flooding. With no online / digital presence to fall back on, her own family business, which she runs with her sister, was closed for six months whilst work was undertaken on repairs.
THE ELEGANT EYEWEAR ENCOMPASSES A TIMELESS DESIGN AESTHETIC USING THE HIGHEST QUALITY MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS
Paula remembers: “It was a stressful time, but it did give me some time to focus on other opportunities, whilst the repairs were happening. A conversation with Dan made me realise that there was a space in the online market for prescription glasses and sunglasses that presented high quality design alongside optical expertise with a personal service.
“We’ve encouraged each other and Yoovy is something we are all proud of and believe in. So far, the feedback has been great – as we can see that there was a real need for this level of service and knowledge when it came to purchasing prescription glasses online.”
Dan Collinson from Little Eccleston, grew up in St Michael’s on Wyre. He has grown up in an entrepreneurial family with high quality
product design at its heart. And as a glasses wearer for most of his adult life, he has a strong interest in style. Dan had the idea of creating an eyewear business offering optician quality service and products online with an in-house range of frames that focused on a curated selection of timeless styles.
Dan said: “Yoovy was created for the discerning glasses wearer who appreciates style and quality in everyday things. Eyewear choice is personal, and for many, it is a constant in their appearance. Yoovy allows consumers to choose from a handmade Italian styled eyewear range with the knowledge that the range is approved by experienced opticians.”
Paula is now the Optical Director at Yoovy and is responsible for the lab team to verify prescriptions and ensure Yoovy lenses are produced, assembled and quality checked before despatched. She has 20 years’ experience – including eight years as a mobile optometrist working in mainly independent practices in the North West of England and latterly running her own practice for 14 years in Lancashire. She is also accredited to provide post-cataract service, LVA and CUES. Every prescription submitted to Yoovy is checked by Paula with every customer order personally handled by her.
Tom Kidd joined Dan and Paula to become part of the Yoovy team at an early stage. Tom is an independent and collaborative designer with over 25 years’ experience working across brand, print and digital. He has worked at some of the North West’s most respected agencies whilst picking up a few industry awards and nominations along the way.
EYEWEAR CHOICE IS PERSONAL, AND FOR MANY, IT IS A CONSTANT IN THEIR APPEARANCE
Tom adds: “Bringing Yoovy to life as a brand has been rewarding as a team of friends. We have created a brand that showcases the team’s dedication to style and quality. From the packaging to the film, social content and the website design, everything is testament to the brand’s commitment to timeless style. Yoovy’s glasses and sunglasses make a statement that will last.”
Yoovy is more than just an eyewear brand; it’s a vision for the future of eyewear. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, Yoovy offers a unique and personalised shopping experience. With a focus on quality, style and convenience, the new venture is poised to become a leading name in the eyewear industry. n

POLE POSITION
With its sleek new look, the fourth generation BMW 1 Series is mightily impressive, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Peter Austin
When vying for attention and acclaim in an over-crowded and ultra-competitive market you have to be very good. No, erase that – you have to be exceptional.
Additionally, the car-buying public in the premium compact segment is not short on choice. Consequently standards are high and demands even higher.
But BMW has never shirked a challenge and the ‘baby’ in its famous family – the big-selling 1 Series – has more than held its own for some time now.
Some say it is BMW’s best-ever motor and sales figures and popularity ratings would lend support to that view.
But to sit back and wallow is to run the risk of sliding into reverse, so please welcome the FOURTH generation of the BMW 1 Series –and stand by to be impressed.
This new generation covers all bases with a sportier appearance, more efficient engine, a hi-tech interior and genuine kerb appeal. Somehow you know at first glance that this is the real deal.
The visual and mechanical changes are significant, although the new look is clearly based on the predecessor.
Unmistakably a 1 Series, but you can’t help
notice the sleeker and longer bonnet with swept-back LED headlights and the sharper, more angular surfacing. The roofline is dynamic and the kidney grille is now a smart, single, vented panel, comprising vertical and diagonal bars which also houses the sensors and radars for the Driver Assistance systems.
THIS CLEAN, UNCLUTTERED LOOK IS TOTALLY DOWN TO THE VERY LATEST TECH
On the side, a notable change is the embossed number ‘1’ on the car’s C-pillar (end-sectionof-back-door-alongside-rear-window in layman’s terms) incorporated within the iconic Hoffmeister kink.
Changes at the back are more subtle with revised LED light clusters and a fresh bumper design. Oh, and another super touch – the exhaust pipes are totally hidden (on the 120 model).
The standard LED headlights feature striking vertical elements for the daytime running light and the turn indicators. Adaptive LED headlights with glare-free matrix high beam, cornering light function and blue accents are optionally available.
Overall the new BMW 1 Series is longer and taller, but similar in width to before.
Moving inside and the first change of note
is a hugely-impressive, single-piece curved infotainment display, made up of a 10.25-inch Information Display and a 10.7-inch Control Display.
THE ROOFLINE IS DYNAMIC AND THE KIDNEY GRILLE IS NOW A SMART, SINGLE, VENTED PANEL
Note also a striking but simplistic overall appearance – it’s almost as though some things are missing, which, of course, they’re not. This clean, uncluttered look is totally down to the very latest tech with QuickSelect on-screen shortcut functions paired up with BMW Operating System 9.
In short, that equates to far fewer buttons and switches and far more finger feely involvement with the touch screen.
The body paintwork of the new BMW 1 Series is available in two solid paintwork finishes and seven metallic finishes and it is the first model in the brand’s range to be available with an optional contrasting roof paint finish.
Standing proud on top of the range is the BMW M135 xDrive with impressive fuel consumption, low CO 2 emissions, 300hp and significantly enhanced design characteristics –including four exhaust tailpipes, M kidney grille and M rear spoiler. The series also includes the 120 Sport and M Sport and the 123 M Sport xDrive and while there are differences (the M135 xDrive has 19-inch alloys as opposed to 17-inch for example) you cannot go wrong with any of the options.
Depending on your choice, you can get over 60mpg and the fastest model is capable of taking you from 0-62mph in under five seconds.
Completely leather-free as standard with space for up to five occupants, you get very comfy seats (heated as standard) and a wide range of electric adjustments, including memory on the driver’s side. Lumbar support and massage function can be added.
Automated driving and parking systems feature – Driving Assistant with front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning, Exit Warning and Traffic Sign Recognition, as well as the Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant.
Also under the ‘standard’ headline is automatic air conditioning, electrically folding exterior mirrors and the BMW Live Cockpit Plus including the BMW Maps cloud-based navigation system.
The Innovation package includes BMW Live Cockpit Professional with BMW Head-Up Display and Augmented View on the Control Display as well as Parking Assistant Plus.
The Premium package adds telephone wireless charging, comfort access, logo projection from the exterior mirrors, automatic dimming interior mirror and adaptive LED headlights. If you want two-zone automatic air conditioning then of course you can have it, along with a panoramic glass roof and a Harman Kardon sound system.
Unfortunately the space available here does not allow for a full list of the umpteen ‘modern tech bits’ everyone needs, so take it as read that there is smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto et al.
The BMW 1 Series has always held pole position in its class and this latest generation is set to keep it that way. n

PURPOSE, POWER & POISE
The striking new Porsche 911 is nothing short of sensational, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Peter Austin
Is there anything Porsche designers and engineers can’t do? Having just made acquaintance with the sensational and innovative new Porsche 911, it would appear not.
For they have taken a truly iconic sports car – perhaps the truly iconic sports car and most certainly a vehicle respected, loved and admired the world over – and guess what? They’ve achieved what many believed impossible – they’ve made it even better.
Not only that, they have also brought the 911 – a car steeped in tradition and motorsport – forward with purpose, power and poise to take its place at the front of the future.
From launch are two variants – the 911 Carrera and Carrera GTS. The first street-legal 911 GTS is equipped with a super-lightweight and powerful T-Hybrid system. It’s quite important at this point not to get confused by the inclusion of the word ‘hybrid’ in the name.
Essentially the 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid is a petrol-powered, mean machine with a newly developed 3.6-litre, flat-six cylinder ‘boxer’ engine, electric turbocharger and electric motor which can capture kinetic energy to feed back into the battery. There are no plugs and there is no estimated electric range.
But does it hit the sweet spot and deliver in terms of true Porsche performance? You bet it does.
Combined peak power is up to 534bhp, with 610Nm of torque and it can power from 0-62mph in three seconds to reach a top speed of 194mph.
THIS IS POWERTRAIN ENGINEERING AND DIGITAL ENGINE MANAGEMENT AT ITS ABSOLUTE BEST. BUT IT’S A PORSCHE, WHAT ELSE DID YOU EXPECT?
Just in case you think you’ve mis-read that – 0-62mph in THREE seconds and a top speed of 194mph!
But there is so much more to tell you about.
For starters, a striking design with new exterior styling, optimised and active aerodynamics, a fresh interior, upgraded
standard equipment and expanded connectivity. A more sporting, streamlined exterior means improved aerodynamics and performance with changes including new, model-specific bumpers and stunning LED headlights with four-point graphic. This makes it possible to omit the front driving lights and creates space for larger cooling vents in the front of the car.
The new headlights are offered with the option of HD matrix LED functions featuring more than 32,000 light points. The high-performance high beam illuminates the road to a distance of more than 600 metres and also offers innovative additional functions such as a driving-mode-dependent dynamic cornering light, lane brightening, construction site and bottleneck light and a non-dazzling high beam that is precise to the pixel.
The redesigned light strip with an integrated arc and Porsche logo makes the tail appear deeper and a re-designed rear grille with five fins per side connects to the rear window to form a graphic unit that fades into the retractable spoiler below. The number plate is positioned higher, with a clearly structured rear bumper. Model-specific exhaust systems are elegantly integrated into the striking diffuser fins.
There is, of course, a sports exhaust system and those clever aforementioned engineers used knowledge gained from motor racing as the basis for designing the ‘hybrid’ system.
The Porsche 911 Carrera GTS rolls on 21-inch wheels with a width of 11.5 inches
and in the cockpit, you’ll discover the familiar design DNA combined with modern technology.
Driver Experience control focuses on the driver’s axis and intuitive, faster operation. Essential control elements centre directly on or around the steering wheel. These include the standard driving mode switch and revised driver assistance lever.
In the centre console storage compartment of the new 911, there is a cooled compartment for smartphones, with a wireless charging function.
The fully-digital instrument cluster houses a 12.6-inch curved display which fits elegantly into the new control and display concept and can be extensively customised.
The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system is still operated via the high-resolution central display with a 10.9-inch screen.
ESSENTIALLY THE 911 CARRERA GTS T-HYBRID IS A PETROL-POWERED, MEAN MACHINE
There are new connectivity features with a QR code significantly simplifying the logging-on process to the PCM with the Porsche ID. Apple CarPlay® is more deeply integrated into the car and, if desired, it displays information in the instrument cluster and enables the operation of vehicle functions directly in the Apple® ecosystem, for example via the Siri® voice assistant.
Video streaming is also available (optional) and Apps like Spotify® and Apple Music® can be used as native apps in the PCM without a connected smartphone.
There is a selection of new colours, including Laguna Blue and Slate Grey Neo, and the overall look, feel and drive is exactly as you’d expect. Superb.
This is powertrain engineering and digital engine management at its absolute best. But it’s a Porsche, what else did you expect? n

AT THE RACES FESTIVE FUN
Ah, Christmas – the season of mulled wine, cosy firesides and if you’re a fan of horse racing, a perfect excuse to hit the track for some festive fun. You might think horse racing goes quiet in the winter, but you’d be wrong
Within a 50-mile radius, you’ve got several fantastic racing venues that really come alive around the holidays. Each track has its own charm, festive traditions and racing events that make for a memorable day out.
Haydock Park: A Christmas Highlight
Haydock Park Racecourse is a must-visit around the festive season. Nestled between Manchester and Liverpool, Haydock is one of the most popular racecourses in the North West, known for its high-quality jumps racing in the winter. One event that attracts a big crowd each year is the ‘Tommy Whittle Chase Day’. Named after one of Haydock’s legendary trainers, this race typically takes place in December and draws in top horses and jockeys. The atmosphere at Haydock Park during the festive period is electric. Imagine bundling up in your best winter coat, clutching a hot drink (or maybe a mulled wine) and placing a few bets. People are in high spirits, the lights are twinkling and there’s a community feel. Even if you’re not a racing fanatic, you can get swept up in the festive spirit, the excitement and the chance to cheer on the horses as they thunder past. It’s no wonder locals flock here for their annual Christmas race fix. Look out for Christmas Afternoon Jump Racing on 4th December, the Betfred Tommy Whittle Chase Day on 21st December and the Betfred Last Fling Race Meeting on 30th December.
Aintree: A Little Further, but Worth the Trip
When it comes to horse racing, Aintree needs no introduction. Best known for hosting the Grand National, it’s one of the most iconic racecourses in the world. Located just about 40 miles away, Aintree is a must-visit for any horse racing fan and this year will see their first ever Boxing Day event.
The course offers something for everyone. For the serious racing fan, there are competitive handicaps and chases to get stuck into, while for those just there for a good time, the festive atmosphere is unbeatable. And after a Christmas Day spent overindulging on turkey and mince pies, what better way to shake off the cobwebs than a day at the races?
Cartmel: A Quaint Escape with a Racing Twist
Cartmel Racecourse, known for its traditional charm and rural beauty, is a lovely spot about 45 miles north of Preston. Racing here is seasonal, mainly taking place in the summer, but the village itself is worth a Christmas visit if you want to feel immersed in festive spirit. Picture cosy pubs with crackling fireplaces, local food stalls and the scent of freshly baked pies wafting through the streets. The Christmas market at Cartmel is a lovely treat, complete with artisan gifts, local delicacies and the famous sticky toffee pudding.
Catterick: A Racing Gem Up North
Heading 50 miles North East, Catterick Racecourse in North Yorkshire is one of the oldest racing venues in Britain and has been hosting races since the mid-19th century. During December, Catterick runs several National Hunt (jumps) meetings that bring out a crowd of fans and families alike. The most popular event is usually around Boxing Day, making it an ideal outing for those looking to escape the house after a Christmas Day feast.
Catterick has a friendly, casual vibe that appeals to seasoned race-goers and newcomers alike. Picture a chilly winter’s day, scarves and gloves on, watching the horses tackle the jumps. It’s a thrilling experience, especially as the crowd rallies with excitement. Add to this the festive treats on offer – think mince pies and mulled cider – and you’ve got a perfect holiday outing. So, if you’re after a
traditional, no-frills day at the races, Catterick Bridge is a real treat with Christmas at Catterick on 17th December and Christmas Jumper Afternoon Race Day on 28th December.
Family-Friendly Festivities
There’s something magical about the Christmas season that seems to heighten the excitement of horse racing. Tracks like Haydock and Aintree are known to offer family-friendly activities, including
face-painting for kids, visits from Santa and sometimes even carol singing to get everyone in the holiday spirit. The festive season is also a time when people reconnect, so you often see big groups of friends and families gathering at the track, enjoying the races and catching up.
For many, it’s also about making new memories and keeping up with tradition. Horse racing during the holidays has
a strong social side – it’s not just about winning or losing a few pounds on a bet but about being part of an event where everyone’s together, cheering, laughing and enjoying the festive energy.
Make Horse Racing Your New Christmas Tradition
Whether you’re a racing regular or a first-timer, the Christmas races offer something truly special. It’s not just about watching the horses;
it’s about enjoying the festive atmosphere, gathering with loved ones and creating memories you’ll cherish long after the season ends. From the thrill of Haydock’s Chase Day to the charm of a Christmas village in Cartmel, there’s something here for everyone. So, why not swap the shopping mall for a day at the races this holiday season? n
FROM ‘FARM TO FORK’ THIS CHRISTMAS
Like all good stories, Honeywell’s is rooted in humble beginnings and is in stark contrast to what has grown into a much-loved local business, long trusted by families to provide the best produce from every day delicious meals to special occasions and celebrations, as Katie Hammond explores
When the Gornall brothers began selling home-reared pork from a stall in their garage back in 1971, they could never have foreseen where their efforts would take them. Now operating from a purpose-built farm shop and serving their loyal customers from two destination food halls, there’s one thing that has remained a constant – the brothers’ determination that high-quality, locally-sourced food will always remain at the heart of all that they do.
What began as a butchery business when John and Anthony opened their first farm shop in 2003, one of the first original farm shops in Lancashire, is now a thriving, multi-range food and produce concern, trusted by several generations of customers across the county. Consistency, quality and high standards of produce have underpinned the successful business that is constantly evolving and thriving.
WE FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT BREED, REARING AND WELFARE ARE THE THREE ESSENTIALS WHICH LEAD TO THE BEST QUALITY BIRDS THAT OUR CUSTOMERS LOVE
Honeywell’s are now proudly serving their loyal customer base from their original farm shop as well as from concessions within Barton Grange Garden Centre in Barton, near Preston, and Bents Garden & Home Food Hall, Glazebury.
With the festive season fast approaching, as always, the Honeywell’s team are doing
their utmost to make life as easy as possible for the families they serve, with the usual mix of the highest quality meats and everything else delicious that’s needed for the perfect family Christmas table.
Manager Liz Laycock explains: “Our fabulous turkeys are hand reared on the family farm by John and Anthony, who learned their traditional rearing skills from their Great Grandad Jack. He nurtured their passion for all things farming and family and coined the phrase ‘from farm to fork’ all those years ago.
“We firmly believe that breed, rearing and welfare are the three essentials which lead to the best quality birds that our customers love – we know this as we have generations of families returning to buy them year after year, which is the ultimate testament for us.
“We buy our turkeys as day-old chicks from Kelly’s Turkeys, who are renowned for their quality and integrity of breed. The birds are slower growing than some of the more modern varieties, so this produces a more flavourful, superior tasting meat. They are all hand-plucked and hung to complete the fullness of flavour and enhance beautiful texture of the meat.
“We have so many different options, from whole turkeys to boneless turkey breast joints, so we can advise what might work best depending on our customers preferences and how many they are feeding on the day. They also have a choice of a plain turkey, or adding one of our large variety of stuffings, including different sausage meats – there’s something to suit everyone’s taste.”
For those looking for something a bit different for the festive table, Honeywell’s award-winning ranges of beef, pork and lamb are complemented by delicious alternatives including venison, Mallard duck, partridge and three-bird roasts. For a special Christmas or Boxing Day breakfast, there’s a full range of bacon, sausages and local Lancashire Black Pudding.
Whilst shoppers can enjoy a festive visit and extended afternoon out browsing the delicatessens at Barton Grange and Bents or popping into the farm shop to see what’s on offer, Honeywell’s are aware that they also need to make provision for the increasingly busy lives of their customers.
WE RECENTLY LAUNCHED OUR ONLINE SHOP, WHERE CUSTOMERS CAN BROWSE THE FULL CHRISTMAS RANGE
Liz continues: “We always listen to feedback and so we recently launched our online shop, where customers can browse the full Christmas range and order everything from our prize- winning meats and hampers to pet food, seasoned logs and our ever-popular cook-at-home boxes. We want Christmas to be just a few clicks away for those who prefer to shop from the comfort of home.”
As another successful year draws to a close for this busy, family-run farm business, Liz concludes: “We are so grateful to those who choose to support us as a small local business, as this, in turn, supports our amazing local farmers, growers and suppliers. We never underestimate what Christmas means to our customers and are delighted that they trust and choose us year after year to treat their families to what is arguably the most important meal of the year – we want it to be perfect for them.” n

NUTRITION WITH KELI
Nutritionist Keli Thompson explains how opting for healthy herbal teas and drinks can help counterbalance a little over indulgence
The festive season is often synonymous with indulgence and for many people (myself included) it’s the one time of year we truly allow ourselves to relax our diet and enjoy delicious treats after working so hard throughout the year. The good news is that you don’t have to push away your healthy habits during Christmas, you can still implement them to remain healthy while indulging in the most delicious treats. You can enjoy the best of both worlds with the right balance and thoughtful choices.
Here are some of my top favourite simple drink tips to help you enjoy the Christmas season without compromising your wellness:
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR IN THE MORNING
This one is a staple for many of my clients! Start your day with a large glass of water mixed with one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar – make sure it has ‘the mother’ – that cloudy goodness at the bottom. An essential tip: sip it with a straw to protect your teeth’s enamel. This drink helps stabilise blood sugar levels, preventing energy crashes that often lead to sugar cravings. Apple cider vinegar also aids digestion by promoting the production of stomach acids and enzymes, making your body break down food more effectively. While the taste might be a bit of an acquired one (trust me, it gets easier) it’s a great way to set the tone for a healthy day.
GREEN SMOOTHIE FOR MID-MORNING ENERGY
Need a little mid-morning boost? A green smoothie will be your best friend. Blend spinach, kale, almond or soy milk and a handful of berries for a fibre-packed drink that keeps you full and satisfied. The greens give you essential vitamins and minerals
like iron (for energy) and magnesium (great for improving sleep). The fibre in the smoothie helps slow down your digestion, which keeps you fuller for longer. The berries’ antioxidants help lift your immune system and provide a natural energy boost. It’s the perfect, feel-good drink to enjoy between meals.
HERBAL TEAS TO CURB CRAVINGS
Herbal teas like peppermint, ginger and cinnamon are excellent for managing cravings and supporting digestion during the festive season. Peppermint is great for soothing your digestive system, ginger helps reduce bloating and cinnamon is known to help regulate blood sugar, which will help prevent those mid-afternoon sugar cravings. Plus, sipping on warm tea can be a comforting and mindful way to relax, especially during the busy festive season. It’s a small habit that can make a big difference in curbing those mid-afternoon snack cravings!
Adding these drinks to your daily routine allows you to fully enjoy the festive indulgence while keeping your health in check. These little changes will help you feel energised, satisfied and ready to embrace the season –all without sacrificing the healthy habits you’ve worked hard to build! n

TIPS ON TIPPING
Hospitality businesses face huge challenges – changes to legislation, retaining skilled staff, rising operational costs and consistency in providing an enhanced customer experience
If someone offered you the opportunity to save money, increase revenue, incentivise your team, improve staff retention and ensure compliance with new tipping legislation then you’d be sure to want to find out more – right?
Let me introduce to you Empower Finance’s recommended digital tipping solution – a revolutionary tool which not only modernises how tips are collected and distributed amongst staff, but one which also streamlines financial operations and ensures full compliance with new tipping regulations.
Whilst the immediate benefits are glaringly obvious, the knock-on effects of implementing a digital tipping solution are far reaching.
NATIONAL INSURANCE (NI) SAVINGS
By using a digital tipping system, tips are treated as gratuities directly from customers to staff, meaning the business doesn’t pay NI contributions on those amounts, leading to significant cost savings.
VAT EXEMPTION ON TIPS
Tips collected digitally ensures a clear separation from the business’ sales and are exempt from VAT – directly impacting profitability.
REDUCED PAYROLL BURDEN
As tips aren’t included in the business’ payroll, the administrative burden and costs related to processing tips through payroll are reduced.
INCREASED STAFF TAKE-HOME PAY
Since tips aren’t subject to the same deductions as wages, staff receive a larger portion of their tips, without the business having to raise wages directly.
IMPROVED FINANCIAL EFFICIENCY
By lowering NI contributions and avoiding VAT on tips, businesses can allocate those savings to other areas, improving overall financial health and operational flexibility.
SEAMLESS TIP COLLECTION
Effortlessly collect tips from customers through digital payments and eliminate handling cash, reducing the risk often associated with traditional cash tips – loss, theft and mismanagement.
BOOST STAFF MORALE
Fair, transparent and timely tip distributions means employees feel they are fairly compensated for their efforts making them more likely to stay. This improvement in staff retention translates into a more experienced and skilled workforce, benefiting overall service quality.
ENHANCED CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
Payment methods are simplified as customers can tip directly through the digital platform in one simple transaction. Offer a convenient, contactless way for customers to show appreciation, creating a better overall experience.
STREAMLINED TIP DISTRIBUTION
Automatically track and distribute tips to staff, save time and reducing errors in manual calculations.
IMPROVED FINANCIAL TRANSPARENCY
Track tipping trends with detailed reporting, allowing for better business insights and planning.
INCREASED REVENUE
By offering simple, digital tipping options, businesses can often see an increase in the number of tips collected overall.
COMPLIANCE WITH LEGISLATION
The TipJar platform ensures complete compliance with the Fair Tips Act – approved by HMRC, protecting you against potential disputes.
Integrating a digital tipping solution is simple, cost effective and stands to benefit businesses, employees and customers alike. As the industry continues to evolve, it is crucial that hospitality businesses leverage technology to meet the demands of the modern marketplace. Transform your tipping strategy, reimagine employee engagement and propel your business into a profitable, customer-centric future. n

Carla Raads is a professional abstract seascape and landscape artist who channels the power and intensity of nature and emotion through her artwork.
Having grown up along the Eastern Cape coast of South Africa, Carla’s childhood was immersed in the captivating beauty of the beach and the untamed forces of the ocean. This deep connection with nature serves as the foundation for her evocative paintings. It seems fitting that Carla now resides in the beautiful coastal town of Lytham St Annes, where the familiarity of the sea helped Carla feel at home and sealed her lifelong love of the wildest elements of nature.
Carla’s first paintings were of dark, stormy, encroaching seas. Various seascapes and skyscapes followed over a period of seven years. Her captivating works have been exhibited in galleries and art shows internationally, attracting art enthusiasts and collectors alike.
MY LATEST BODY OF WORK REPRESENTS AN EVOLUTION IN MY ARTISTIC JOURNEY, SEAMLESSLY BLENDING TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES WITH CONTEMPORARY FLAIR
Last year was a big year for Carla. Following several successful collaborations with Porsche throughout 2023, she was named a ‘Driven by Dreams’ ambassador. The campaign’s ethos centred around celebrating the bold dreamers who fearlessly pursue their passions. There was more interest from international collectors when Carla did her first solo show in the UK, Sun and Soul: Sunset Recollections and she also
FUSION OF NATURE & ABSTRACTION
Originally from South Africa, artist Carla Raads has been taking the art world by storm. Ali Gudgeon catches up with her to talk about her latest work. Photography: Rob Cooper
collaborated with Jumeirah Hotels for their clifftop hotel in Sóller, Mallorca.
In the same year, Carla moved to a larger studio at Whitehills Business Park in Blackpool, a lovely corner studio which is flooded with natural light.
Carla explains: “My work is a balance between commissions and what I want to paint. Work naturally evolves and I found around the same time I moved into my new
studio, my style started to change.
“My latest body of work represents an evolution in my artistic journey, seamlessly blending traditional techniques with contemporary flair. This new series pushes the boundaries of landscape and floral art, inviting viewers to observe our relationship with nature in a new way.
“At the heart of this new approach is an innovative multi-media process. Each piece begins with an ink wash on canvas, laying a foundation that is both unpredictable and inspiring. Building upon this, I apply layers of oil paint, my signature medium, interweaving this with strategically placed spray paint elements. This fusion of techniques results in works that are unmistakably contemporary.
THE ULTIMATE GOAL WITH THIS NEW BODY OF WORK IS TO EVOKE A SENSE OF WONDER AND FOSTER A DEEPER CONNECTION BETWEEN VIEWER AND
ART
“I’ve always been fascinated by the interplay of different media. By introducing spray paint alongside my usual oils, I’m able to achieve a freshness and spontaneity that speaks to the organic nature of my subjects. I love it when colours unexpectedly merge or paint runs in unforeseen ways. It mirrors the unpredictability of nature itself.”
While florals and plant life feature prominently in this new series, Carla still considers these works as landscapes in essence. She explains: “Abstract elements reminiscent of skyscapes weave through the compositions, creating a sense of vast, dreamlike environments. The style is decidedly looser and more organic than my previous work, yet viewers can intuitively grasp the subject matter, hovering in a captivating space between recognition and imagination.”
In a significant departure from her earlier works, Carla has adopted a more subdued colour palette for this series. “The works are grounded in tonal and neutral hues, creating a sense of calm and introspection. However, each piece is energised by the strategic use of a single, vibrant colour, adding a dynamic focal point and emotional resonance.”
The ultimate goal with this new body of work is to evoke a sense of wonder and foster a deeper connection between viewer and art. “I want people to be initially struck by the beauty, but then be drawn in to
explore further. There are hidden elements – perhaps the suggestion of a figure – that reveal themselves over time.
“This layered approach to composition serves as a metaphor for our relationship with the natural world. We’re forever intertwined with nature. I hope these pieces remind viewers of that connection and perhaps see both the landscape and themselves in a new light.”
Carla has just released a print edition –limited edition prints are available from
this collection offering an accessible way to bring Carla’s artistry into your home or gift it to someone special. n
