COUNTRY ESTATE’S £30M
PRIVATE MEMBERS’ CLUB
Ambitious plans are in the pipeline for a luxurious private members’ club to be developed on a historic 1,000-acre country estate, writes Jan Woolley
A£30million venture to create an exclusive, private members’ club, country house hotel and wellness resort is set to go ahead in the beautiful Ribble Valley countryside. At the heart of the project is the magnificent Georgian mansion house set within the historic, 400-year-old Gisburne Park estate. Spearheading the development are Guy and Amber Hindley, who explain: “To create something like this has always
been an ambition of ours. Gisburne Park is a unique place with endless potential and unbelievable beauty.”
IT’S THE ONLY GRADE I LISTED MEMBERS’ CLUB OUTSIDE OF LONDON
Guy Hindley is the great-grandson of British Homes Stores (BHS) founder Harold Hindley. He grew up on the 1,000-acre estate and inherited it in 2003 as a former shooting and hunting property that was once frequented by historical figures including Oliver Cromwell, Winston Churchill and King Charles II.
The Grade I listed family home, overlooking the tributary of Stock Beck and the River Ribble, was sold back in the mid-1990s and for
35 years operated as a private hospital. But in a twist of fate, the 50,000 sq ft house came up for sale during the pandemic and Guy and Amber had the opportunity of reacquiring the hall enabling them to reunite it back with the family and the surrounding parkland.
“When we discovered the house was being sold, we couldn’t believe it! This is a once-ina-generation opportunity,” says Guy, who after inheriting the estate, transformed part of it into a state-of-the-art holiday village with luxury lodges and cottages.
The new private members’ club is inspired by the likes of the prestigious Soho Farmhouse, Estelle Manor and the country club lifestyle of Amber’s upbringing: “I grew up in California and the country club was a big part of my life,” Amber explains. “We want to bring that lifestyle to the north.
“In the south you will find private members’ clubs but here in the North West there is nothing similar.
“We want our members to feel like they have their own key to the estate, to walk along the river amidst the wild Sika deer,
go for a work out, a yoga class, spend a few hours working remotely while indulging in a delicious meal, entertain guests, sunbathe by the pool, play a game of padel or tennis, go riding, clay pigeon shooting, catch a salmon, and enjoy old and new friends.”
THE DUO ARE VERY EXCITED TO BE WORKING WITH SOME OF THE WORLD’S LEADING DESIGNERS TO RESTORE THEIR PRIVATELY OWNED ESTATE
The duo are tremendously excited to be working with some of the world’s leading designers to restore the privately-owned estate.
The plans for the club include a hotel with 40 rooms, restaurants and bars and a wellness club giving members access to the latest biohacking technology.
“Gisburne Park will not be a traditional spa but a holistic sanctuary designed to nurture members and guests from top to toe,” says Amber.
On the ground floor there will be restaurants and rooms in which members and guests can work, meet and dine, a cinema, library, various bars and in the cellars will be private dining and a nightclub: “It will be a home away from home,” adds Guy.
Amber explains: “Guy and I met in New York City while I was at acting school and he was at art school. Our passion and love of the arts will be celebrated across this project and we look forward to working with local and
WE WANT PEOPLE TO FEEL LIKE IT’S THEIR OWN 1000-ACRE ESTATE WHERE THEY CAN WORK OUT, ENTERTAIN GUESTS, SUNBATHE BY THE POOL
national artists. The house, in the days of Lord Ribblesdale, once housed a vast collection of important works of art and we look forward to filling it again.
“We are in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and only 45 minutes from Manchester and on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. There isn’t a site as beautiful as Gisburne Park in the UK and we feel the north of England is ready for a project of this nature!” n

FOR THE LOVE OF MUSIC
Gail Bailey chats to Andrew Dickinson of Bernard Dickinson Smart Home Solutions about their business ethos and their relationship with Ruark Audio
From working in his father’s business in the school holidays, Andrew Dickinson has continued the philosophy of the original company his father founded – and developed it further to ensure they stay one step ahead of today’s fast-paced and evolving technology.
“My father, who had been a radio technician in the Royal Airforce, started the business in 1959, driven by his love of listening to music at its very best. He started with a radio shop, and as the world of radio and television has developed so much over the years, so have we. I am proud that we have embraced the changes and have so much enthusiasm for the digital era and the benefits it brings,” Andrew explains.
Andrew and his team are keen to celebrate the relationship they have developed with Ruark Audio, a company that embraces the same values as Bernard Dickinson –a genuine family business that has grown over the years: “Ruark, like ourselves are a longstanding British company whose focus is on quality products and first-rate customer service,” says Andrew. “This, along
with the range of innovative systems they supply, is the reason we are proud to work with them.”
The father of Ruark’s founder, Alan O’Rourke was a cabinetmaker and in the 1970s when hi-fi systems were born, all speaker cabinets were made of wood. Andrew explains: “Alan’s father worked with some of the pioneering greats of British hi-fi, so he understood just how important materials and construction are to how a music system sounds.”
Ruark still apply these principles today when they update or design their products and create a wonderful blend of traditional and contemporary.
MUSIC SYSTEMS ALLOW US TO HAVE THAT EMOTIONAL CONNECTION WITH MUSIC THAT LOTS OF US REMEMBER
Some of the Ruark products available at Bernard Dickinsons include the R1, R2 and R3 which are a key range of audio systems: “When the R1 radio was launched in 2006 it was hailed as ‘the Aston Martin of DAB radios’ by the Sunday Telegraph,” explains Andrew. “This range then went on to evolve and now includes the R2 and R3 music systems which are hugely popular with our customers.”
The R410 is described by Andrew as a truly amazing product: “This system has a striking design,” he says. “It provides all
the connectivity you are ever likely to need and whilst streaming is its speciality, LPs or CDs can also be enjoyed with easy to access connections.”
And the very latest product to arrive at Bernard Dickinsons is Ruark’s R610 music console bringing this highly popular concept back and up to date: “The R610 which we are really thrilled to stock has been designed and crafted for sound – to bring people back to the joy of music,” says Andrew. “This is a key theme that Ruark and all at Bernard Dickinson share.”
Andrew really believes that the R610 plus Sabre-R Bookshelf speakers will be a major player to bring music back to the forefront: “Streaming is important, but we then miss so much of the wider music that is available and the younger generations are starting to realise this,” he says. “There is a place for both types of technology, but music systems allow us to have that emotional connection with music that lots of us remember – the LP sleeve used to be key and thankfully there is a return to having this wider attachment.”
Stunningly beautiful products, with amazing technology, delivering a perfect sound is the future of audio and both businesses are at the heart of it. Wireless technology, where multi-room audio connects all devices and all the major streaming platforms – with the added benefit of accessibility to play LPs and CDs – perfect!
Both Bernard Dickinson and Ruark Audio love sound and how it makes people feel, both believing passionately that the best sound is vital when it comes to bringing people closer to the excitement and emotion of music.
“Our learning hasn’t ceased since our early days and I know this is the same for Ruark,” says Andrew. “Technology and our clients’ desires have and continue to move us forward, creating and recreating spaces within homes to be proud of.” n

GET ORGANISED
With the Christmas holidays on the horizon, now is the time to organise some much-needed kitchen storage space ahead of the festive season
With our homes filled with the warm scents of mulled wine and Christmas cake, the kitchen often becomes the main attraction as family and friends convene during the holiday season. The kitchen and pantry are rarely top of the list when it comes to decorating, but you can easily bring extra warmth, joy and magic to the season by adding Christmas décor to these hard-working spaces. With a little bit of prep and organising before the festive season begins, you can also reduce the stress that the holidays can bring.
Your pantry should be the first place to organise for Christmas, whether you are hosting on the day or just wanting to stock up on seasonal treats for your family. First
of all, declutter any older items. Easy access, shallow shelving means you never have to rummage for dusty, outdated cans again.
Dedicate a section of your pantry specifically for Christmas items and arrange into categories such as baking ingredients, canned goods, snacks, beverages and festive treats. It makes it easier to locate items quickly during the rush.
THE RESULTING
HYBRID
‘PANTILITY’
IS A MARVEL OF HANDCRAFTED CABINETRY, INGENUITY AND SPACE-SAVING SOLUTIONS
Clear storage is the best method for items such as flour, sugar, grains and seasonal treats, so you can tell at a glance and avoid the need to run out for last minute ingredients on Christmas Eve.
It’s a great idea to create a festive shopping list and combined with your designated Christmas zone in your pantry, this will help to streamline your shopping trips and
ensure you have all the necessary ingredients for your festive feasts.
You don’t need a huge kitchen to create a pantry. This tiny space was reimagined by the clever designers at The Secret Drawer into a combined pantry and utility room. The resulting hybrid ‘pantility’ is a marvel of handcrafted cabinetry, ingenuity and space-saving solutions all year round. It has been given a magical, holiday mood-making make-over.
The smaller pantry is optimised by using the vertical space and the ladder on rollers creates easy access to much needed additional storage.
Pull out crate style drawers provide deep spaces with ventilation for vegetables, dried goods and treats like crisps and nuts.
Now you’re organised and ready for the season, it’s time to think about getting the pantry dressed and ready for Christmas. The warm oak of the crate boxes and ‘secret’ cupboards are the perfect foil for the Christmas decorations that add pops of classic red and green. A homely, nostalgic feel is created with a few favourite vintage decorations dotted around, which contrast with the bright, white of the counter top. A sweet station has been created in the cupboard, the perfect place for all those holiday treats. It features mesh doors which allows for air to circulate around freshly baked mince pies, keeping everything in tip top, fresh condition for the season.
Bring the Christmas spirit to every corner of your home and make sure it is merry and bright. n

USE US OR LOSE US!
Mike Scothern of electrical retailers Harry Garlick, discusses the fight to keep retail on the high street
Some time ago I mentioned in a rival publication how difficult retailing on the high street is becoming. With the advent of the internet and out of town shopping areas, many town centres have become a shadow of their former selves.
Now with the after effect of the Covid pandemic, the high street may well have changed forever. No longer is it the place to go for your everyday needs, but more the place you go for a coffee or a snack.
High streets in general and Clitheroe in
particular, are in danger of becoming no more than meeting places, with local shops and services becoming a thing of the past. In Clitheroe now, our high street is dominated by cafes, coffee shops and charity shops. I have nothing against these establishments, but just over half of the stores on Clitheroe’s high street are now (what I would call) proper retail.
IT IS BEING A PART OF THESE BUYING GROUPS AND THE LOYALTY OF OUR CUSTOMERS THAT ENSURES WE WILL BE AROUND FOR MANY YEARS TO COME
My mantra for years has been ‘use us or lose us’ and never has that been truer. In recent times we have seen more than one

It is being a part of these buying groups and the loyalty of our customers that ensures we will be around for many years to come.
It means that we can compete on price with the likes of Currys and John Lewis, as well as the major online retailers, but we also offer the friendly local service that these big brands are not able to do.

Fuelmizas in Ribchester tells us all about the new generation of pellet stoves about to take the UK by storm and why they provide a great heating choice
Family run business Fuelmizas know a thing or two about keeping your home warm without spending a fortune on running costs. Nick Astley along with his wife Suzanne, owners of the business, are not only experts on wood burning stoves but also on the latest new pellet stoves about to arrive in UK.
Jøtul is one of Fuelmizas’ leading brands currently on display in the Ribchester showroom. World-renowned for its awardwinning portfolio of cast iron wood burning and multifuel stoves, it has just launched a collection of state-of-the-art new pellet stoves, and it’s these new arrivals that they will be shortly unveiling.
Nick explains why he is excited to introduce these pellet stoves to customers and why this type of stove is only just gaining the recognition it deserves in the UK: “Europe
and most Scandinavian countries have used pellet stoves for decades. They have always been well respected and sought-after in so many countries but not here in the UK. Traditionally the only UK available pellet stoves were difficult to fit and were large, ugly big black boxes which made a great deal of noise – none of which appealed to the discerning homeowner.
SIMPLY SET THE TIMINGS ON YOUR PHONE OR TABLET TO START YOUR STOVE BEFORE YOU ARRIVE HOME
“The new pellet stoves from Jøtul have turned all of those issues on its head – these are beautifully styled, clean burning, cost effective and very quiet. Each cleverly conceals the latest technology and innovations for quiet combustion, eco-conscious warmth and fabulous flame views. Designs vary from Scandi sleek through to retro good looks, all of which will be stunning focal points in both a contemporary modern or traditional classic home.”
The stoves have been developed to specifically deliver efficient and clean combustion, with over 90 per cent efficiency, as well as emission levels that rank among the lowest in the market, all proudly carrying the ECODESIGN 2022 labels and DEFRA exemption.
They are also one of the most effective, low environmental impact solutions to heat a home, providing homeowners with substantial savings on heating bills. Wood
pellets are also an organic fuel comprised of compressed sawdust and are 100 per cent natural, free of chemical additives and manufactured from waste product. Each stove will burn the complete pellets with very little ash for removal, helping to keep any maintenance to a minimum.
Auto ignition and auto draft management are also key features in the pellet stoves, along with the ability to programme heating times remotely from your smartphone’s app. Simply set the timings on your phone or tablet to start your stove before you arrive home and programme your preferred temperature. It’s so easy to set your stove to start before you get out of bed – no more waking up to a chilly house! n
Call into see the new pellet stove collection and chat with Nick direct – you will always be sure of a warm welcome!

CREATING THE WOW FACTOR…
A visionary project has resulted in a new contemporary living space being created by innovative designers at Clearly Interiors.
Photography: KapturedbyWayne.co.uk
Atraditional property, tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac, has recently undergone a major makeover, which has given the house a stunning ‘wow factor’.
What was a small kitchen, separate living area and traditional bathroom have all been transformed giving homeowner Ian Harrison stylish new spaces that work on every level.
Having bought the property six years ago, former banker Ian had considered moving, but as he explains: “Why move when I have everything here? The location is brilliant, it’s lovely and quiet and the transport networks are all close by.”
Instead of moving Ian decided to re-think the living space in the three-bedroom bungalow.
IN THE OPEN-PLAN LIVING AREA IS A MEDIA WALL WITH LARGE TV, ELEGANT REAL-FLAME FIRE AND ILLUMINATED ALCOVES
FEATURING
MUCH-LOVED
ARTWORK AND SCULPTURES
When he originally moved into the house, Ian turned to Clearly Interiors to replace some wardrobes: “Replacing the wardrobes was one of the first things I did and Clearly
Interiors did a brilliant job. So, when I decided to remodel the kitchen and living area it was a natural choice to go to them.”
While more space was key to Ian’s plan, he was also keen to radically re-work the rooms to create a contemporary, stylish ambience that aligned with his busy lifestyle.
“I had lots of ideas. I knew I wanted a media wall with a TV and fire, but I also needed to create more space.
“I go to the gym most days and one of the guys there suggested spinning the whole room around, so I went to see Paul at Clearly Interiors, who came up with a plan that basically replicated all the ideas I had in my head.
“When he initially visited the house, he took lots of photos so when he presented the 3D CAD drawings, I could see exactly how it was going to look. It was a very bespoke, personal experience,” recalls Ian.
The original back door to the property was removed while a long narrow hallway and the original bathroom were reconfigured, which all created much-needed extra space.
An industrial-style, glass-panelled door now leads into the new open plan kitchen and living area flooding it with natural light from
the hallway. Handleless, light oak cabinets line the walls, while a long breakfast bar provides a flexible dining and work zone creating a natural boundary between the kitchen and living room. Pale grey Karndean flooring flows from one area to the other giving it a cohesive, contemporary feel.
THE WHOLE TEAM AT CLEARLY INTERIORS HAVE BEEN FANTASTIC. FROM A CREATIVE POINT OF VIEW, THEY HAVE SUCH VISION
Lighting has formed a crucial part of the makeover and with Ian’s artistic eye for detail, he has created a living space that is as beautiful as it is practical.
In the kitchen illuminated alcoves form an attractive focal point, while in the open-plan living area is Ian’s highly anticipated media wall with large TV, elegant real-flame fire and alcoves featuring much-loved artwork and sculptures.
“I am quite particular about lighting and really dislike suspended lights so I wanted different options,” says Ian, who chose LED
downlighters as well as string LEDs along the skirting to create a cosy, atmospheric ambience.
Like the kitchen and living area, Ian’s new shower room is nothing short of a triumph. Choosing black was a brave choice but it works particularly well, as he explains: “When you come up with an idea the team at Clearly Interiors are really accommodating and this has far exceeded my expectations!”
Downlighters light the space and feature alcoves, while a narrow, floor-level recess at the base of the shower area is illuminated to give a floating effect.
“I can’t believe how much room we have managed to create. The whole team at Clearly Interiors have been fantastic. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending them for any renovation plans. From a creative point of view, they have such vision, while the craftsmen who did the work were amazing.
“I was able to watch the space evolve and now that it’s finished, everyone has been in awe of it!” n
SEASONAL SHRUBS FOR WILDLIFE
For many, November and December is a time to enjoy the garden from the comfort of your home, but there are still jobs you can do to ensure your wildlife survives the winter
Even in the smallest garden it is possible to provide food, water and shelter from bad weather for common garden birds. If you have a balcony or small patio make sure hanging feeders are topped up. Birds will start to venture closer to the house as food supplies run out. In colder weather, cut a branch from a conifer and lay it on the ground to make an ‘umbrella’ that keeps an area free from frost and allows birds to find insects.
As much as you may like to, it is not a good time to remove or severely prune evergreens or shrubs with berries or hips as these provide more than just food for birds and mammals. Insects, including ladybirds, take cover in dense conifers which are also populated by smaller birds such as wrens for roosting on cold nights. So before you start any major winter garden activities take into account the disturbance to wildlife it may cause.
However, if you have evergreens and shrubs in your garden then you can make natural seasonal decorations for free by gathering your own greenery. Simply cut some berries and foliage to use in arrangements, door
INSECTS, INCLUDING LADYBIRDS, TAKE COVER IN DENSE CONIFERS WHICH ARE ALSO POPULATED BY SMALLER BIRDS
wreaths and banister swags. Prepare cut stems by putting them straight into a bucket of water at room temperature for a couple of hours then cut them all again and crush the ends before giving them another soak in fresh water. Harvest whole cotoneaster branches or springs of berries to wire into wreaths but watch out for thorns if using pyracantha with its prolific berries ranging from pale yellow through to rich red. Holly berries with foliage provide the best effect in festive arrangements and can be coupled with shrubby shoots of ivy for a classic display.
Once you’ve taken your pick for seasonal decorations, you can always increase your stock for the coming years by taking some hardwood cuttings – one of the top jobs for gardeners this month. Other jobs include checking insultation on outdoor taps and preventing ponds from freezing. If your pond is stocked with fish and it does freeze over, melt the ice by placing a hot pan on the surface, or install a pond heater or water feature. n
WHAT THE EXPERTS
SAY:
The smell of a winter spruce, the warming taste of a spiced mulled wine and a seasonal wreath hanging from the front door – there’s no doubt the festive season is upon us. This may be the darkest month, but it won’t be long before the days begin to unfurl, lighting the way to spring. For many of us, it’s a time to reflect on the year’s gardening successes and failures as well as thinking about what we’ll do differently next season.

SET YOUR SOUL ON FIRE
Lucas Everett is a man who knows where the heart of the home is and has spent his whole working life bringing the best stoves and fires to homes across the Ribble Valley, Lancashire and beyond, writes Katie Hammond. Photography: Kirsten Platt
What started as a small, familyrun business 36 years ago when his parents first opened the doors to Canterbury Fireplaces, has doubled in size over the past eight years under Lucas Everett’s watchful eye and it is now one of the largest fireplace showrooms in the UK.
The Canterbury team pride themselves on having something to suit every taste, but their unrivalled range of high-end fires and stoves has put them firmly on the map. Set over two floors, with more than 4,000 square feet of showroom, you can see all types of settings in 150 working displays, complete with every imaginable surround and finish.
On visiting the showroom, the latest innovative advancements of the industry are obvious as you take in the newest models from the Solus IX range, complete with holographic flames which almost look more authentic
than the real thing. The Solus electric range boasts cutting edge technology and along with instant heat, the fires can be customised with pre-set themes and choice of front, corner or panoramic aspects to best suit the setting – the range is also designed to be part of the increasingly popular media wall installations which Canterbury offer.
WE WERE RECENTLY INVITED TO THE RAIS SHOWROOM IN DENMARK AND WE WERE BLOWN AWAY. THERE’S EVEN AN APP WHERE THE STOVE CAN BE VIRTUALLY PLACED IN YOUR ROOM
The Vision Trimline range has been designed with the specific purpose of recreating an instinctive connectivity with nature. The innovative fires are skilfully
engineered to allow a true trimless aspect, with no distracting frames or visible workings, just fire, making them ideal for situating anywhere in the home.
The iconic Danish brand RAIS, as Lucas explains, is one of their most exciting collaborations to date: “We were recently invited to the RAIS showroom in Denmark for the release of the new range and we were blown away – they really are the Rolls Royce of the stove world and are fully customisable to our customers’ taste. There’s even an app where the stove can be virtually placed in your room at home so you can see it in situ and adjust the colours and fittings to your exact specifications.”
Renowned for their impressive range, also including Onyx, Gazco, Stovax, Charlton & Jenrick and Element4, Canterbury is also proud to be a Penman Premier Retailer, specialists in handcrafted marble and stone fireplaces. The Penman Collection presents a clearly distinctive range of fireplaces, stoves, and accessories that combines investment in design with quality materials and expert
craftsmanship, taking inspiration from classical design themes and infusing with a more contemporary feel.
This brings Lucas on to the importance of the whole service that the company provides: “Although we are known for the supply and fitting of beautiful fires, the fact that they are the focal point of family living means our customers have many different requirements when it comes to how they sit in their home.
OUR FOCUS HAS CHANGED OVER RECENT YEARS AS WE SAW THE NEED FOR A MORE COMPLETE SERVICE. WE OFFER FULLY TAILORED SOLUTIONS
“Our focus has changed over recent years as we saw the need for a more complete service. We offer fully tailored solutions –effectively holding hands with the customer through the whole installation process.
“Media walls have become increasingly popular, so we offer a full installation service and create bespoke joinery to create them around the fire – we often work with interior designers, architects and builders as part of overall home projects.”
From bespoke design to precision installation and the highest level of expertise at all stages,
the knowledgeable and friendly team pride themselves on attention to detail. An initial visit to the showroom gives customers a feel for the plethora of different options available to choose from and has a homely and welcoming feel.
“We have just completed £150,000 overhaul of the showroom as we wanted to truly showcase our fires and give customers a real feel of how they can be styled and built into the heart of their homes,” explains Lucas.
“We are very proud of what we do and all we have to offer. To partner with the likes of industry-leading British brands such as Penman and be recognised for our range and level of customer service and fitting as a Centre of Excellence and Expert Retailer by PureVision, Gazco and Stovax says everything about how far we have come as a business.” n

THE KITCHEN
The kitchen is the hub of the home, the rendezvous point at breakfast time, the gathering place in the evening. Consider positive and energising colours – especially yellow, the colour of creativity – for this significant space. Paint kitchen units in oh-so-smart India Yellow in Modern Eggshell and balance that with a unifying Off White everywhere else. If you have a secondary piece of free-standing furniture, such as a larder cupboard or kitchen island, bring in a strong accent colour like Tanner’s Brown or Studio Green, which would look super-chic here.
FEEL GOOD COLOURS
To mark World Mental Health Day, Patrick O’Donnell talked to colour therapist and writer Momtaz Begum-Hossain
In a special episode for The Chromologist podcast, colour therapist and writer Momtaz Begum-Hossain discussed the way colour has transformed her life and how she uses it to support and empower others. While giving a few colour tips for bringing greater wellbeing into daily life, she explains: “Colour is an instant mood-booster. It can guide decision-making and inspire our creativity. If you really welcome it, you can experience its full sensory potential.”
Talking to Momtaz was Patrick O’Donnell, brand ambassador for Farrow and Ball, who shares three schemes to boost your mood. While your home is the constant backdrop to your life, the way you decorate can make you feel energised or relaxed, inspired or focused, refreshed after a good night’s sleep or warmly welcomed home after a busy day. Paddy says: “Every room in the home should be a sanctuary, filling you with joy or calm when you enter a space, and the colour you choose can have a huge impact.”
THE LIVING ROOM
Cosy and comforting all the way. This is somewhere to switch off, read a book on a squishy sofa or catch up on your favourite drama. Don’t rule out dark colours either, even for north facing spaces as they can work a treat with restricted natural light! For this scheme, go light with a twist – a dark trim colour. Look to an earthy pink for your walls. Setting Plaster is just the ticket with its delicate brown notes and utterly soothing feel. Then give the room a nice counterbalance with Card Room Green on all your woodwork and a nuanced white for your ceiling but nothing too sharp. Shadow White would be a perfect balance.
THE BEDROOM
Rest and relaxation is the order of the day in this space and what better colour family to look to than greens. These shades exude all the positive attributes you need to unwind, especially at the mid tone level like French Gray. Then treat everything else with calming gentility, so soft whites like School House White for your woodwork and the classic Wimborne White for your ceiling. n

RISING STAR
Lucy Manfredi has been named as the one to watch in the art world and Lancashire gallery Heppletone is delighted to have been exclusively selected to represent her
Renowned gallery Hepplestone Fine Art is thrilled to announce that they have been selected as the UK’s exclusive dealer in the work of Lucy Manfredi – hailed as the rising star of the art world.
A member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Art, Lucy has been producing work that is ultimately collectible, as Giles Hepplestone explains: “Lucy’s work is very recognisable and is very much in demand. We are delighted to have signed her!”
Producing both townscapes and figurative work, Lucy comes under the genre broadly
known as the Northern School and has been likened to L S Lowry: “Her work is partly whimsical and has a touch of nostalgia about it. It is naïve in style and has an old school Northern charm.”
Often painting elderly ladies wearing glasses in everyday situations, Lucy has been tipped as ‘the one to watch’: “She is one of our great up and coming artists and at the moment her original work is still very accessible. The response we have had in our galleries to Lucy’s work has been outstanding.”
SHE IS ONE OF OUR GREAT UP AND COMING ARTISTS AND AT THE MOMENT HER ORIGINAL WORK IS STILL VERY ACCESSIBLE
Born in Stockport in 1974, Lucy has had a lifelong fascination with the creative arts, which continued throughout her education. She graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in Fine Art Illustration with
Animation and went on to complete a Masters in Brighton.
She worked in several artistic sectors before deciding that painting and drawing was her destiny and she now works from her studio in Cheshire.
A master of tone and composition, she captures the humour of Northern life in her paintings and art dealers across the UK have been raving about her work.
“She is becoming the talk of the industry,” adds Giles. “That’s why we expressed such excitement when we were chosen to represent Lucy.
“She was impressed with our extensive experience and our passion – I think our work
ethos aligned with hers and she thought we would be the best representatives for her.”
With demand for Northern art currently extremely strong, Lucy’s work has been lauded by well-respected figures within the art world.
LUCY COMES UNDER THE GENRE BROADLY KNOWN AS THE NORTHERN SCHOOL AND HAS BEEN LIKENED TO L S LOWRY
Legendary Hale art dealer Bill Clark, well known for showcasing L S Lowry originals, was recently interviewed in the Manchester
Evening News. When asked for his tip on who was the current rising star, he named Lucy Manfredi.
Founded in 2005 by father and son team Clive and Giles Hepplestone, the Hepplestone Fine Art Gallery was born from a passion for quality art.
As avid collectors, Clive and Giles have sought to bring affordable and collectable original paintings and high quality limited editions to their galleries in the grounds of Heskin Hall near Chorley and in Wilmslow.
As one of the UK’s leading retail galleries and twice winning the title of ‘Retail Art Gallery of the Year’ from the Fine Art Trade Guild, Hepplestone specialise in original paintings by Northern School artists, of which L S Lowry is probably the best known.
“The work of Lucy Manfredi aligns very well with us as a gallery,” explains Giles.
“It was very interesting to hear the interview with Bill Clark who had no hesitation in naming Lucy as a rising star. Her work is getting to be very investible and we are already planning a solo exhibition for 2025.” n

EXPLORE THE WORLD
Curiosity Club is for children who grow up with a deep connection to nature, insatiable curiosity and the confidence to explore the world around them
Each month, this beautifully illustrated Curiosity Club subscription, is designed for kids aged seven to 12 years with enchanting guides, engaging workbooks and vibrant collectible patches and pins featuring different species.
Arcana Living, which produces Curiosity Club, was created by Ria Mishaal and Jake Snaddon. Ria spent 15 years as a professional photographer, following a career as a behavioural neuroscientist, and is a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. This has led to a fascination in the connection between
people and their passions, and how visual stories help us feel better understood.
Jake is an ecologist and environmental scientist, focusing on ecology, biodiversity and the conservation of biological resources.
Ria, who is a mother of two children aged five and nine, says: “I want my children to grow up with curiosity, creativity, passion
and excitement about nature, to cherish their belongings and to value the world around them. But I struggled to create ways to support this development with all the demands of daily life and to find resources that didn’t add to the throwaway culture.
“Curiosity Club is my answer to this struggle. It’s the resource I wish I could find –a simple, stunning and sustainable way to connect with my children, nurture their love for the natural world and help them grow into confident, creative individuals.”
Each month features a Discovery Guide with at least 10 different activities including:
• Nature education
• Guided nature observation
• Mini experiments
• Outdoor exploration
• Crafts with recycled materials
• Recipes inspired by nature
How to draw

• A glossary each month of new words and concepts
Plus, every quarter each child will receive their very own Field Journal, a beautiful space for them to work through three months of the guided activities outlined in the Discovery Guides. There is also dedicated sections for nature observations, mindfulness pages and experimental projects. n
Each edition focuses on what’s happening in Britain during the current season. From £18.50 per month (first month half price).

THE ROOT TO SUCCESS
it an ideal time to lift them from the ground and to move them to a new area. Lifting and transporting trees in the winter season gives the plants time to settle into their new area, after which, they are ready to wake up and sprout again in the spring.
If you are looking for high quality hedging plants and trees for your next landscaping project and shudder at the expensive potgrown prices at the local garden centre, there is a handy local alternative.
Bannister Hall Nurseries, based in Higher Walton Preston, specialises in the growing and sourcing of trees and hedging plants in root ball and bare root form. Unlike pot-grown trees and hedging plants, root ball and bare root plants are grown naturally in a field and then lifted in a dormant phase at certain times of the year. This offers numerous benefits for the consumer and a highly cost-effective solution for planting a hedge or tree line, especially when covering a larger area.
The root ball and bare root season runs from October to around March the following year. During the winter months, trees and shrubs enter a dormant period, which makes
ROOT BALL AND BARE ROOT PLANTS ARE GROWN NATURALLY IN A FIELD
Indeed, root ball refers to the bio-degradable hessian sack that encapsulates the ball of earth containing the root system of the plant when it has been lifted from the ground. When transported to its new location the plant and the sack containing its roots are planted as one, directly into the ground. The process is quick and fairly straight forward, and the success rates are usually high.
There are multiple benefits to planting hedging and trees in root balls, one of which is that they are already strong, healthy and mature plants with an established root system. This gives the plant a much better chance of survival whilst creating an ‘instant hedge’ at the size and species desired. This takes away the waiting for plants to develop and ‘knit’ into the desired density you require, and you almost have a fully grown hedge within a day of taking delivery.
As with root balls, bare roots are lifted from the ground during the winter months. They are generally younger plants, which are grown for a few years and then lifted from the ground. The roots need to be kept moist until planted in their new location. Once planted in a new area, bare root plants
will take time to grow and develop. Whilst they do not have the same immediate impact as the root ball alternative, come spring, there will be an abundance of thriving greenery. Bare roots come with stems of varying heights and with a healthy root system. With a bit of time and patience you will have a thriving hedge that will transform your garden and offer added privacy.
At Bannister Hall, customers are able to choose their trees and hedging in a wide variety of species and sizes at a greatly reduced cost from pot grown alternatives. Furthermore, qualified horticulturalists are on hand to advise you on the best species of root ball or bare root for your landscaping project. n

EXCLUSIVE EVENT
An exclusive glimpse into the new collection by celebrated designer brand Marc Cain was enjoyed at an invitation-only event by Shaw’s of Southport, writes Katie Hammond
Shaw’s of Southport recently presented two exclusive fashion shows featuring models from London previewing this season’s key pieces from Marc Cain, whilst guests enjoyed prosecco with delicious canapes provided by Totally D’Vine.
Chosen to host the roadshow by the iconic brand as one of their exclusive UK retailers, Shaw’s special guests were also given an insight into a brief history of the label, along with their design philosophy. They were also talked through the manufacturing process and how the style and high quality of the garments remains the brand’s ultimate signature.
The Marc Cain collection has played a pivotal role over the years for Shaw’s, as owner Tania Shaw explains: “I have always loved Marc Cain designs and when I decided to
open the shop six years ago, I approached them first to be the supplier of our main collection. It was a natural fit as I knew the kind of clientele we were looking to attract would love the brand’s unique and classic style.

The personal touch is something that Shaw’s pride themselves on, with individual customer service and satisfaction at the centre of all that they do.
Tania continues: “I’ve loved every minute since opening – we have such wonderful clients and staff. Myself and our manager, Carole, aim to offer an intimate, really personalised shopping experience for each and every customer. We know the clothes they love and appreciate their style, so we are always on hand to offer advice and help, whether they are shopping for a special occasion or just browsing our collections. LOVE LUXE…
From super-soft cashmere to exclusive Dita eyewear, visit Scruples to discover a world of refined luxury. Photography: Kirsten Platt
Pure luxury lies at the heart of this season’s beautifully curated collections at Scruples 1984.
As always, director Stephen Collins along with store manager Tom Orrell and the team have an international line-up of designers that are elevating Scruples’ menswear offering: “This year we have slightly altered the way we are buying. We have top names such as Loro Piana and Canali that are producing ready-to-wear collections that feature casual pieces of kit which represent pure luxury in terms of fabric and fit.”
Unusually for the winter season there is a considerable amount of colour featuring in the collections, as Tom explains: “As everyone knows we love a pop of colour at Scruples! A client, who normally only wears navy jackets has just bought a beautiful, deep pink cashmere blazer – stunning!”
Colour is also featuring on everything from winter knits to detail on the denim –whatever the shade, it enhances the luxury
look. Take Mackage for example, a name that has delivered a truly unique colour – Trench –in their signature collection of outerwear.
This Canadian brand has proved incredibly popular at Scruples’ Barrowford store: “It’s been amazing!” enthuses Tom. “It’s a really wearable colour and features in two different styles of coat that also come in navy.
THIS SEASON AT SCRUPLES, DISCOVER CASHMERE BOMBERS AND OVERSHIRTS – PLUS A WEATHER-PROOF TRENCH COAT WHICH FEATURES AN EMBEDDED VERSATILE HOODIE
“Everyone seems to want something new in a different colour.”
Another world-leader within the luxury clothing market is top Italian brand Pal Zileri, which mixes contemporary style with classic tailoring. This season at Scruples, discover
cashmere bombers and overshirts – plus a weather-proof trench coat which features an embedded versatile hoodie.
Focusing on functionality, Herno is another brand that utilises technique and technology to create Italian outerwear that is tactile and design-led.
Jacob Cohen, which specialises in luxury, ready-to-wear jeans along with Tramarossa famed for its hand-tailored denim, are both favoured brands along with Richard J Brown, which is leading the way with their unique, cashmere-blend denim – ultra-soft and exclusive to Scruples.
“We have luxury denim in a variety of styles this season,” says Tom, who is tremendously excited about the latest in-store eyewear collections.
“We can’t believe how popular our eyewear collections have become since taking on the Tom Ford brand a while back.”
Zegna also features as well as respected makers Dita, with Scruples’ Barrowford store being the sole UK retailer of the brand, which styles its sunglasses in a combination of high-grade titanium and Japanese acetate: “Word has got around that we stock Dita sunglasses and they’ve become unbelievably popular. There’s a fabulous range of styles. It’s like walking into a car showroom and coming away with a Rolls Royce! Our collection of sunglasses is a relatively new asset to Scruples but wow, it’s fantastic!”

In the run up to the festive period, Scruples has a range of luxury giftware that is sure to impress. From super-soft cashmere socks from Falke in lovely seasonal colours, with

pale lilac becoming a best seller! Falke has also embarked on a quirky alliance with summer-brand Vilebrequin – better known for its swim shorts: “The Falke x Vilebrequin
collaboration is unusual – the socks feature turtles which were Vilebrequin’s summer 2024 trademark. The ad campaign for the socks is interesting!”
Belts from British brand Elliot Rhodes make a great gift – the inter-changeable mix-and-match designs are renowned for their quality. Maybe opt for an exclusive diamante skull buckle and team it with luxury leather – including python, croc or stingray. n
Scruples also offers a complimentary gift-wrapping service along with ‘gift coins’ (which look like boxed medals) with balances of £250, £500 or £1,000.

THE JOY OF A CHRISTMAS JUMPER!
The Christmas jumper, once a quirky festive trend, has now cemented itself as a beloved staple in British culture
The rise in popularity of the Christmas jumper can be traced back to the 1980s, when characters like Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones’s Diary donned a particularly garish example, creating an enduring connection between holiday sweaters and festive cheer.
The concept of a Christmas-themed sweater wasn’t originally British – it likely has roots in Scandinavian and Icelandic winter knitwear traditions, where colourful, thick woollen sweaters were both practical and decorative during long winters.
However, in the UK, the idea soon evolved, with Christmas jumpers becoming known for their bold colours and fun motifs. By the early 2000s, retailers started to catch on to the festive knitwear craze, turning what was once a niche or ironic item into a mainstream fashion phenomenon. The appeal of the Christmas jumper lies partly in its nostalgic charm and partly in its lighthearted approach to holiday fashion. Brightly-coloured patterns and designs featuring Santa, reindeer, snowflakes, and Christmas trees became not just acceptable but celebrated, with people from all walks of life embracing the tradition.
THE APPEAL OF THE CHRISTMAS JUMPER LIES PARTLY IN ITS NOSTALGIC CHARM AND PARTLY IN ITS LIGHTHEARTED APPROACH TO HOLIDAY FASHION
This national enthusiasm for Christmas jumpers has led to various annual traditions, including the UK’s ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ launched by the charity Save the Children in 2012. Held in mid-December each year, Christmas Jumper Day encourages people to wear festive sweaters and make donations to charity, turning the trend into a powerful philanthropic movement. This day has added a layer of community spirit and goodwill to the tradition, combining the joy of Christmas jumpers with meaningful charitable giving.
Today, Christmas jumpers have become a symbol of holiday festivity. In workplaces, schools and social gatherings, people proudly display their holiday sweaters, often competing to wear the most garish or overthe-top designs. High streets and online retailers release new Christmas jumper collections each year, reflecting a blend of classic festive motifs and popular culture references, making it an evolving part of holiday fashion.
The Christmas jumper is more than just a seasonal novelty. It’s a reflection of our ability to combine humour, nostalgia and community spirit in holiday traditions. What began as a kitsch item of clothing has become an enduring feature of Christmas culture, celebrated for its ability to bring people together in the spirit of fun and generosity. n

TRANSFORMING PROBLEM SKIN RESTORING CONFIDENCE
For those battling acne, it’s not just skin that suffers, confidence can take a hit, too. At Discover Laser in Burnley, Dr Miguel Montero helps patients manage acne and transform their skin with personalised solutions focusing on long-term results
While acne treatments can be broad and sometimes challenging, Dr Miguel Montero’s experience shines in areas where advanced technology meets dermatological care. With a strong understanding of the latest guidelines and professional recommendations, he uses a comprehensive approach that combines medication, skincare and non-invasive treatments. For anyone seeking treatment for active adult acne, Discover Laser offers a onestop solution to tackle every aspect of this frustrating condition.
The clinic’s treatment options range from topical and oral medications to micro-needling, energy-based devices like Dermalux LED lights and laser therapies. Dr Montero emphasises that experience is key, especially when using IPL and lasers. His years of practice determining the right device and settings for each patient’s skin type ensure effective results that are hard to find elsewhere.
For anyone seeking long-term improvement, a detailed consultation is
the first step. Using tools like VISIA Skin Imaging and dermoscopy, Dr Montero can assess visible and underlying issues, allowing him to create a tailored plan that suits each patient’s unique needs.
“It’s about understanding the skin from the surface down,” Dr Montero explains. “Only then can we formulate a treatment plan that works. Every layer of the skin holds crucial information, and by fully assessing it, we can ensure that the treatment targets the root causes effectively for longlasting results.”
Acne scarring, another primary concern for many patients, is treated once the active acne is under control. Dr Montero uses a combination of advanced treatments, depending on the severity of the scars, including UltraPulse® SCAAR FX, ResurFX® and eDermastampTM, ensuring a long-term solution that improves both the appearance and texture of scarred skin.
Patients at Discover Laser are never left to feel alone in their journey. Regular followups are an integral part of the process. Dr Montero and his team are always on hand
to address concerns or adjust treatments.
“It’s important for patients to feel supported,” he notes. “Acne can be an ongoing challenge, but with the right care, we see remarkable transformations.”

There isn’t a definitive, widely accepted statistic that breaks down the percentage of men versus women who engage in gaslighting. Gaslighting is a complex behaviour driven by the needs of the perpetrator.
It is often observed within the context of power dynamics, such as in abusive relationships and can be seen in both men and women. That said, cultural and social factors can influence the prevalence and perception of gaslighting.
Because of these complexities, it’s difficult to assign specific percentages to which gender engages more in gaslighting. The behaviour itself is more tied to power, control and individual personality traits than to gender alone.
In the second part of this explanation of gaslighting, I am going to talk about some of the tactics employed by perpetrators. Later we will discuss the tactics of recovery.
Often the biggest challenge to recovery is that by the time a person understands what is happening, their confidence and self-esteem
can be badly damaged. If you suspect a friend, family member or colleague may be a victim of gaslighting, slowly and gently try to get them to open up and discuss their thoughts, feelings and fears. Encourage them to get help. Unless you feel they are in danger, do not try to take over and make decisions on their behalf. Try to support them to make their own decisions and take appropriate action.
TYPICAL TACTICS
• DENIAL OF REALITY: The gaslighter insists that something did not happen or that the victim is misremembering events.
• COUNTERING: The perpetrator questions the victim’s memory or interpretation of events, often with misleading information.
• WITHHOLDING: The gaslighter pretends not to understand or refuses to listen to the victim.
• TRIVIALISING: They belittle or dismiss the victim’s feelings and concerns. For example: “You’re overreacting or you’re being too sensitive.”
• DIVERTING: The gaslighter changes the subject or questions the victim’s thoughts, thus diverting the conversation.
• FORGETTING OR DENIAL: They pretend to forget events or deny they happened.
• PROJECTION: The gaslighter accuses the victim of the very behaviour they are exhibiting.
TAKE BACK CONTROL
• RECOGNISE THE SIGNS: Awareness is the first step. Acknowledge that gaslighting is happening and that it is a form of manipulation.
• REBUILD SELF-TRUST: Engage in activities that strengthen your confidence and self-esteem. Trust your instincts.
• SET BOUNDARIES: Clearly define what behaviour you will not tolerate. Communicate these boundaries and stick to them. Only do this if you feel confident the perpetrator will not react aggressively to being challenged.
• LIMIT OR CUT OFF CONTACT: In cases of severe gaslighting, it may be necessary to distance yourself or cut ties with the perpetrator.
• THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS: Professional therapy can provide tools and strategies to cope with the effects of gaslighting.
• EDUCATION: Educate yourself about gaslighting and narcissistic behaviours. By understanding these tactics and employing recovery strategies, individuals can regain their sense of reality and autonomy, fostering healthier relationships and emotional well-being.
Once you have taken back control of your life and rebuilt your confidence and self-esteem, I strongly suggest that you take a look at how you got into that relationship? If the gaslighting was the perpetrator’s response to a particular event and those behaviours were not there from the start of the relationship, that is one scenario. However, it is worth checking that you were not drawn into a manipulative relationship, and if you were, why? The only way to ensure it doesn’t happen again, is to understand and resolve the deep-seated reasons behind it. Gaslighting can put a person in a lonely and scary place. However, it is absolutely possible to regain and rebuild your life and learn from the experience. n

A more perfect version of yourself is easily achievable for a fresh, new start to Christmas and 2025, as skin expert Emma Pearce explains, writes Katie Hammond
‘New Year, new me’ is a phrase we often repeat to ourselves when looking forward to the start of a brand-new journey around the sun – and growing another year older.
Founder and Director of Lancashire’s leading skin clinic
EMA Skin Aesthetics Ltd, Emma Pearce is a woman on a mission, keen to reassure clients that it’s never too late to make an astounding improvement to both their skin and overall self-confidence.
WHAT CLIENTS SAY…

Emma explains: “Our longer lasting, non-invasive, state-of-theart treatments give unbelievable results and are so easily achievable without the use of invasive fillers, injectables or surgery. I love seeing my client’s reactions to a younger looking, fresher version of themselves – it can be life changing!”
EMA is at the forefront of utilising new technology, such as the new

Emma continues: “With benefits to so many problem areas, Ultrasound 12D uses the latest non-surgical technology to lift and tighten the skin, boosting collagen and giving a firmer, natural rejuvenating effect – it’s genuinely like a face lift without surgery and there’s no need for down time as

NUTRITION WITH KELI
Nutritionist Keli Thompson explains how opting for healthy herbal teas and drinks can help counterbalance a little over indulgence
The festive season is often synonymous with indulgence and for many people (myself included) it’s the one time of year we truly allow ourselves to relax our diet and enjoy delicious treats after working so hard throughout the year. The good news is that you don’t have to push away your healthy habits during Christmas, you can still implement them to remain healthy while indulging in the most delicious treats. You can enjoy the best of both worlds with the right balance and thoughtful choices.
Here are some of my top favourite simple drink tips to help you enjoy the Christmas season without compromising your wellness:
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR IN THE MORNING
This one is a staple for many of my clients! Start your day with a large glass of water mixed with one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar – make sure it has ‘the mother’ – that cloudy goodness at the bottom. An essential tip: sip it with a straw to protect your teeth’s enamel. This drink helps stabilise blood sugar levels, preventing energy crashes that often lead to sugar cravings. Apple cider vinegar also aids digestion by promoting the production of stomach acids and enzymes, making your body break down food more effectively. While the taste might be a bit of an acquired one (trust me, it gets easier) it’s a great way to set the tone for a healthy day.
GREEN SMOOTHIE FOR MID-MORNING ENERGY
Need a little mid-morning boost? A green smoothie will be your best friend. Blend spinach, kale, almond or soy milk and a handful of berries for a fibre-packed drink that keeps you full and satisfied. The greens give you essential vitamins and minerals
like iron (for energy) and magnesium (great for improving sleep). The fibre in the smoothie helps slow down your digestion, which keeps you fuller for longer. The berries’ antioxidants help lift your immune system and provide a natural energy boost. It’s the perfect, feel-good drink to enjoy between meals.
HERBAL TEAS TO CURB CRAVINGS
Herbal teas like peppermint, ginger and cinnamon are excellent for managing cravings and supporting digestion during the festive season. Peppermint is great for soothing your digestive system, ginger helps reduce bloating and cinnamon is known to help regulate blood sugar, which will help prevent those mid-afternoon sugar cravings. Plus, sipping on warm tea can be a comforting and mindful way to relax, especially during the busy festive season. It’s a small habit that can make a big difference in curbing those mid-afternoon snack cravings!
Adding these drinks to your daily routine allows you to fully enjoy the festive indulgence while keeping your health in check. These little changes will help you feel energised, satisfied and ready to embrace the season –all without sacrificing the healthy habits you’ve worked hard to build! n

HOLISTIC APPROACH TO HEALTH & BEAUTY
A state-of-the-art, friendly and welcoming clinic, The Doctor & Company is entering an exciting new era taking a holistic approach to health and wellbeing, writes Katie Hammond
The term ‘professional aesthetics clinic’ conjures up an image of a sterile and somewhat overwhelming environment. This is something Dr Natalie, lead clinician and founder of The Doctor & Company, is acutely aware of and was keen to dispel when she started her journey to creating her brand and clinics in Whalley, Lymm and Manchester.
With an earlier career as a medical doctor, and with more than 10 years as an aesthetics physician, she explains: “We want our clients to just look like the best possible, polished version of themselves – imagine, you on a good day with really healthy, glowing skin. Treatments should be undetectable to others, but make you look amazing and that’s what my team and I specialise in.”
Recognised as a leader in the aesthetics industry, Dr Natalie is also keen to respond to her clients’ overall needs, bringing the newest additions to the clinic’s services.
“Clients are telling us they feel there is a real lack of information around women’s health and with the current demands placed upon the NHS, it has been difficult for them to address concerns around general health issues.
“With this in mind, we are introducing a specialist to join the team who can complement the services we already offer, addressing clients’ holistic health issues, as well as skin health.”
DR JON ASH
The Doctor & Company is delighted to welcome Dr Jon Ash to the team – an experienced Consultant Gynaecologist and women’s health specialist.
Jon’s collaboration with The Doctor & Company will provide clients with the opportunity to explore gynaecological concerns.
Dr Natalie adds: “Jon firmly believes that advice on women’s health must balance individual needs and wishes with safe recommendations grounded in evidence and proven efficacy.”
After qualifying at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London, in 2002, Jon completed his specialist training in gynaecology before starting as a consultant at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust in 2013.
A member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the British Menopause Society, the British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy and the British Society of Urogynaecology, he is a well-respected expert in his field.
With access to clinical facilities such as blood tests and ultrasound scans, Jon will be offering consultations at The Doctor & Company’s clinic in Whalley for a variety of women’s health issues, including early, pre, peri and post menopause changes, Hormone Replacement Therapy, safe testosterone supplementation and the management of pelvic pain. He will also consult on menstrual irregularities, including heavy and irregular periods, and pelvic floor dysfunction including bladder weakness and difficulty or discomfort with intercourse – all alongside general gynaecological wellbeing checks for peace of mind.
ULTRASOUND SCAN
Dr Natalie and her experienced team are always looking to add to their impressive portfolio of services to complement their more rounded approach in response to what their clients are asking for: “We are acutely aware that our clients’ needs are changing and are keen to provide the tools they need to feel like they are looking after all aspects of
their health. We are now offering ultrasound scans and specialise in delivering high quality imaging utilising the latest technology via our team of specialised sonographers.
“With more than 10 years’ experience within both the NHS and private sector, we are all fully registered and regulated for practice in the UK. Our services can be performed either with or without a medical referral – we will provide a full report on the day of the scan and where required, direct images to the relevant healthcare professional. Services include abdominal, gynaecological, pregnancy and early viability scans, along with area-specific musculoskeletal scans.”
FILTER-FREE SKIN
With further advances in dermatological technology, The Doctor & Company have invested heavily in a state-of-the-art laser machine, the only one based in the North West, to be able to offer what they term ‘Filter-Free Skin’.
MOXI – In recent years, significant strides have been made in the realm of skin rejuvenation. One of the most notable innovations is Sciton MOXI, a non-ablative laser treatment designed to improve skin texture, tone and overall appearance.
The state-of-the-art fractional laser treatment targets sun damage, pigmentation, fine lines, and uneven skin tone. Unlike traditional ablative lasers which remove the outer layer of skin, MOXI is classified as a non-ablative, which means it works by creating microscopic zones of thermal injury in the deeper layers of the skin while leaving the surface intact, promoting natural healing stimulating collagen production and suitable for every skin type.
Dr Natalie continues: “It’s even suitable for tanned skin as it’s water targeted and the
minimum recovery period means that clients may experience mild redness and swelling for a short time, but can resume their regular activities within a day or two. With optimal treatment, clients can expect to see improvements which last for months, with collagen remodelling continuing long after the treatment.”
BroadBand Light (BBL) – BBL is a powerful and advanced light-based therapy system (a form of IPL, but much stronger) which utilises a broad spectrum of wavelengths to treat various skin conditions, including pigmentation, vascular lesions, acne and signs of ageing. Unlike traditional laser treatments which use a single wavelength, BBL can emit multiple wavelengths simultaneously, allowing for the comprehensive treatment of different skin concerns in one session.
Filter-Free Skin – The Doctor and Company can combine MOXI & BBL treatments with outstanding results, addressing various concerns such as pigmentation, skin texture, signs of ageing and so much more. If you’re looking for total skin rejuvenation, this treatment is definitely for you! n

A WHOLE NEW WORLD
Kate Hyde spends a day at the new-look Woodland Spa – a wonderful, relaxing retreat in luxurious surroundings
Irecently had the chance to explore the newly expanded Woodland Spa at Crow Wood in Burnley, and wow, what a venue! It has been transformed into a stunning multi-million pound retreat that truly feels like a luxurious escape, even though it’s just a few minutes from Junction 11 on the M65. The original spa was already impressive, but this expansion has taken it to a whole new level.
The moment you walk through the doors, you’ll be blown away by the impressive, expansive space and I mean HUGE! A stunning blend of modern luxury and natural beauty, the design incorporates wood and stone, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes you feel instantly relaxed.
Exploring the new areas of the spa is a treat in itself. Every corner reveals something different – whether it’s the serene vitality pool with rainfall experience and oversized loungers, the Roman footbaths, Europe’s first KLAFS ice lounge or a private treatment suite that feels like a world of its own. The design is thoughtfully done, with natural materials
and calming colours that enhance the feeling of being surrounded by nature. I loved how they’ve integrated the outside elements, making it feel like a true woodland escape. And each space, even though it has its own distinct identity, flows perfectly into the next really cementing the feeling of being on a journey that stimulates the senses in a well thought-out way.
THERE ARE NO TIME LIMITS ON YOUR SPA JOURNEY, YOU ARE WELCOME TO USE ALL THE FACILITIES FROM OPENING TO CLOSING
Every area invites you to experience something unique, from the serenity pool, saunarium, steam, rasuls and the salt steam. And oh, let’s not forget the outdoor offering –infinity spa pool, hot tubs, outdoor firepits and an outdoor swimming pool which leads inside too! There’s something magical about relaxing in warm water while gazing out at
the lush greenery that surrounds the spa. There are no time limits on your spa journey, you are welcome to use all the facilities from opening to closing – I promise that you will want to make the most of it. With the ample chill-out spaces you could certainly get in a leisurely snooze, before jumping straight back in.
There are three dining options available during your spa stay, these include a twocourse meal in the Spa Restaurant, tapas in the Terrace Bar or pizza in the Rooftop Bar, all of which you can enjoy while wearing your spa robe (and don’t worry if you suffer an accidental food spillage, replacement robes are readily available to hide the evidence).
With a huge array of treatments with experienced, knowledgeable and friendly therapists you can really tailor your visit for the perfect spa experience, be it a day, evening or an overnight stay in the equally luxurious Crow Wood hotel.
The Woodland Spa is a place that encourages you to slow down and reconnect, offering a little slice of paradise just a stone’s throw from home. Whether you’re looking for a day of pampering or a weekend retreat, this spa is definitely worth exploring. Trust me, you’ll leave feeling like a brand-new version of yourself. n

LOOK FRESH FOR CHRISTMAS
If you’re looking to freshen up your appearance for the festive season, then RejuvaMed’s Medical Director Dr Grant McKeating can help
When choosing a clinic for your aesthetic treatments, it’s vital that you look closely at the qualifications and reputation of your practitioner.
Dr Grant McKeating has worked as a hospital consultant for 25 years, and in aesthetic medicine for 12 of those. You can trust him to deliver a safe and expert treatment. Firstly, you’ll have 30 minutes set aside with Dr Grant in RejuvaMed’s Clitheroe or Chorley clinic for a full consultation to discuss your concerns in detail. He will then recommend and discuss suitable treatments for you.
Dr Grant says: “The most important issue to address in people who are in their 40s and beyond is the sagging of their facial features.
“As you age you lose fat and bone, and treatments that give lift and restore volume are the most important. Careful use of dermal fillers in a full-face rejuvenation, or the use of new technology such as Morpheus8, can subtly transform your appearance. Make sure you see someone medically qualified in an established clinic, who doesn’t just visit a local salon once a month. Good aftercare is vital.”
Dr Grant offers wrinkle relaxing treatments, non-surgical facelifts and treatment of facial thread veins (see images) amongst other anti-ageing therapies. n
To arrange a consultation please call the clinic on 01200 538668 or scan the QR code (right) to book online.
PRIVATE DERMATOLOGY NOW IN CLITHEROE!
Dr Grant McKeating explains RejuvaMed’s dermatology service, which offers quick diagnosis and timely treatment
RejuvaMed offers a private dermatology service every Friday morning with Dr Ahsan Raza. Many of you may know Dr Raza, as he is a GP partner in a local practice and is also a GPwSI (GP with special interest) in dermatology. He now leads the community dermatology team and is an expert on all things ‘skin’!
The NHS is under severe pressure at the moment, and it can take considerable time to be seen by a dermatologist. Many issues are considered to be ‘cosmetic’ and will not qualify for NHS treatment.
If you have a skin lesion, mole, lump or bump that you’d like to have evaluated by an expert, Dr Raza can see you quickly, look at the lesion with a dermatoscope if required
and plan any further treatment for you. We can arrange for skin lesions to be removed quickly and safely, under local anaesthetic, in our minor surgery operating room. These will be sent to be checked by a pathologist, with results available in seven days or so, for your peace of mind.
If you have a problem with a chronic skin condition such as eczema, psoriasis or acne, or if you have developed a new skin problem, and would like prompt diagnosis, Dr Raza can help. n
If you’d like to see Dr Raza, consultation costs from just £85. Call the clinic on 01200 538668, e-mail: info@rejuvamed.co.uk, or book online at: rejuvamed.co.uk or by scanning the QR code (below).

FESTIVITIES BEGIN IN LONGRIDGE
In the run up to Christmas townsfolk and visitors to Longridge will have a fantastic chance to take part in a range of exciting events
Organised by the town’s business group, Love Longridge, this year’s Longridge Does Christmas festivities have been finalised and it’s set to be a great line-up!
LATE NIGHT SHOPPING
Thursday 28th November 5pm – 9pm The emphasis will be on late night shopping and entertainment at the resident stores and bars.
In the area around the Old Station Buildings on Berry Lane, Santa will arrive to switch on the Christmas lights. Local schools will be singing carols and Longridge Band will start its usual tour of the shops. After the lights have been switched on, Santa will retire to his grotto adjacent to the Old Station Buildings. Berry Lane School will hold its traditional Christmas Fair.
To many long-established Longridge residents and businesses this will feel like a return to the ‘old-style’ late night shopping event. Some shops will be decorated with elves which will feature in a children’s elf hunt. This is a great opportunity to support the many independent businesses that give Longridge its unique character. These businesses are vital contributors to the town we call home. There is a substantial body of evidence that shows that for every £1 spent with a local business, 68 pence is recycled in the local economy in the form of employment, local taxes and support of local families, charities and community ventures. Just making that one purchase in a local shop, as opposed to a national chain or online giant, can have a much greater impact than you might expect on the place you live. Please support our local businesses if you can.
THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO SUPPORT THE MANY INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES THAT GIVE LONGRIDGE ITS UNIQUE CHARACTER
FOODIE FRIDAY
Friday 29th November 4.30pm – 10pm Attention switches to the Civic Hall. There will be live music throughout the late afternoon / evening and a food court established in front of the Civic Hall. A variety of food vendors will be present to tempt music lovers and spectators for the tractor parade with a range of food including hog roasts, paella, Thai food and pizzas. The evening will also see the town’s first ever tractor parade, supported by Longridge Young Farmers. Starting at the Civic Hall, a parade of tractors, decorated in Christmas theme, will tour Longridge and its surrounding villages on a trip of approximately 10 miles, before returning to the Civic Hall where prizes will be presented to the best Christmas-decorated tractor and driver. This should be quite a spectacle!
Resident shops, cafes and bars will operate according to their own schedules throughout Friday.
MARKET DAY
Saturday 30th December 9am – 4pm Commencing at 9am an artisan market will be established on Towneley Gardens. Resident shops will operate according to their own schedules.
At 10am the starting gun will be fired for two races. There will be a Santa Dash 5k run for the serious athletes and a fun-focused Turkey Tinsel Trot, where fancy dress, prams and pets are encouraged. This will be a much shorter run, or walk, or toddle, of around one
and a half miles, with the emphasis very much on fun. Both runs will start and finish at the Civic Hall and the organisers are extremely grateful to Fitness Plus gym on Kestor Lane for its generous sponsorship of both runs. Runners and their families are welcome to stay around Longridge and experience the Christmas atmosphere in the shops, cafes and bars.
Love Longridge hopes that this new threeday programme avoids the ‘crush’ we have seen in recent years, with all activities focused on a sometimes-frenetic Thursday evening. It also hopes the programme will encourage residents and visitors to come to the town more than once.
The Love Longridge business group is a notfor-profit organisation that exists to promote Longridge and its resident businesses, whatever they may be. By organising Longridge Does Christmas, the Longridge Soap Box Derby and other marketing activities the group hopes to grow footfall for the town’s traders.
Love Longridge wishes all residents, businesses and visitors a happy and healthy Christmas. n

OUT IN THE COMMUNITY
The experts at Raymond James Ribble Valley put their words into action supporting many local charities and good causes
How frequently do you look at corporate statements and think: “Do they really put these great sentiments into action? When does the PR really live up to its own hype?” Put your cynicism to one side because right here, in the heart of the Ribble Valley, we have embarked on putting our words into action.
Our parent company, Raymond James Financial Inc (RJF) has approximately $1.48 trillion in client assets, 8,800 financial advisors and 146 quarters of consecutive profitability (as at 30th June 2024). On its website it states: “People are at the centre of all we do. That’s because we believe we’re in the business of helping people achieve their dreams … support their families, grow their business, improve their communities.”
Raymond James, Ribble Valley honours the RJF mission. Over the last two years we have donated eight per cent of profits to charity and community projects.
For the third year, the branch was the principal sponsor of Longridge Soap Box Derby. The organisers are confident of raising more than £20,000 for St Catherine’s Hospice, despite the dreadful weather on the day adding to the event’s running costs. This has added to the valuable £25,000 raised for the charity last year. And it wasn’t only the Ribble Valley
SOME OF OUR STRONGER CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS HAVE BEEN STARTED BY AN INFORMAL CONVERSATION AT A COMMUNITY EVENT
branch that was involved. Raymond James Investment Services’ head office in London contributed additional funds to the sponsorship monies. Both Cynthia Poole, Director of Relationship Management and Business Support and Annie Stacey, Co-Manager of Relationship Management, attended on the day, underlining the business’ philosophy of working with the communities Raymond James operates in.
Throughout 2024 the Raymond James, Ribble Valley team has attended 10 agricultural and other local shows. “Our presence at these
events serves two purposes,” says Wayne Hayhurst, Branch Principal. “Our pitch fees contribute to the financial success of the shows but more importantly some of our stronger client relationships have been started by an informal conversation at a community event.”
The branch is once again collecting warm clothes on behalf of Rotary International’s ‘Wrap Up Central Lancashire’ campaign. Serviceable coats will be collected until 10th November and distributed to homeless shelters and organisations supporting the elderly, women and children. In a similar vein, it is collecting food and other domestic items for the Ribble Valley Foodbank. All donations of coats and food can be left with the branch.
“Longridge is the place I am proud to call home,” says Wayne. “We now offer our services to over 500 households in the Ribble Valley and we are proud of the communities we serve and our place in those communities. A client recently said to me the greatest good we can do in the community is simply by being there, having someone he could talk to, face-to-face, about his financial future. He was uninterested in forming a telephone or online relationship with his money. I’d like to think we go further than that and are at the centre of many of the best things that happen here.”
If you would like to discuss your investment needs and options, please do not hesitate to make an appointment with one of our Longridge based team. We look forward to welcoming you soon. n

The best wool and yarns can be found at a fabulous new outlet in Longridge where friendly workshops encourage crafters to get creative
GET CREATIVE…
Anew venture for creative craftworker
Helen Holden is attracting lots of attention on social media.
Helen who opened Longridge Wool and Yarn four months ago retails lovely British ‘reared and sheared’ wool and she also runs successful craft workshops from her lovely shop on Berry Lane in Longridge.
Among her most popular are amigurumi (small toy crochet) workshops – her most recent one saw crafters crochet jelly fish and mice. With all materials included as well as tea and cake, it’s easy to understand why Helen receives so much positive feedback.
“Crochet is a really big thing at the moment. A lot of young people are getting involved

A CATALYST FOR
BUSINESS GROWTH
The team at Longridge based Catalyst discuss business growth and creative marketing, with a pledge to leave the siloed approach in 2024
Too often, we see businesses keeping their growth strategies and marketing efforts separate, as though they are better off operating independently.
In almost all cases, this disconnection leads to missed opportunities and a confusing message.
As we head towards 2025, the landscape grows increasingly competitive and it’s absolutely vital that businesses unite their growth strategies with their creative marketing efforts.
THE PROBLEM
At Catalyst we see many businesses operating their marketing efforts on an ad-hoc, reactive basis, rather than it being a carefully planned strategy that is directly in line with the organisation’s wider growth plans. When growth and marketing strategies are disconnected, we often see fragmented efforts lacking direction.
Marketing teams might launch campaigns without fully understanding the company’s growth goals, while business development focuses on scaling without tapping into the power of marketing to engage new audiences and strengthen the brand.
In today’s fast-paced environment, this kind of misalignment simply doesn’t work. The market is too competitive.
THE SOLUTION
To overcome this challenge, businesses need to ensure that their growth strategies are fully aligned with their marketing efforts.
It’s no longer enough to post on social media or send an email campaign in isolation. Every marketing action needs to be part of a larger, integrated strategy that supports your business’s wider objectives.
When marketing is developed in alignment with growth plans, it becomes a powerful tool to reach new audiences, retain existing customers and drive sustainable growth. This approach ensures a cohesive message that ties marketing initiatives directly to measurable business outcomes.
HOW TO MAKE IT HAPPEN
The key to integrating business growth and marketing lies in strategic planning.
Marketing should be a core consideration from the outset of any business development plan. Move away from reactive campaigns and ad-hoc activity. Instead, focus on a comprehensive strategy that connects every marketing effort to your overall business objectives.

RINGING IN THE NEW
At the start of the run-up to Christmas, Bridget Rowan heads to Whalley to discover how they are ringing the changes at the town’s Grade l listed parish church
Most people in Britain live within sound of church bells. They are part of our heritage and history.
Over the centuries they’ve called us to prayer, to arms, to celebrate and, in times of crisis, to come together. During the Second World War bells were silenced until the return of peace in 1945, and in 2023 they chimed to celebrate the coronation of Charles lll.
And, just in time for the festive season, Whalley’s historic St Mary’s and All Saints Church bells are ringing out with renewed vigour following a £50,000 refurbishment. For the past four months the eight bells have hung in sombre silence as work went on around them in the Anglican church’s 15th century tower. But in October they rang out anew at Whalley Parish Church Bell Centenary event as ringers gave a celebratory quarter peal, followed by open ringing and service ringing, and a service of thanksgiving
led by the Bishop of Blackburn, the Right Rev Philip North.
This is the church’s third set of bells. In the early 18th century four bells hung in the tower, but these were recast and the number increased to six in 1741. In 1924, these were also recast to create the current peal of
eight bells. The treble bell, a war memorial, carries the inscription: ‘This bell is part of the parish church memorial to the men of Whalley who fell in the Great War 1914-1918’. Although bells have been hung in churches
for centuries – they are recorded as early as 680AD in Wearmouth and Whitby abbeys –change ringing developed only in the 16th century when bells were mounted on wheels, giving greater range and control. Change ringing became a fashionable aristocratic practice during the reign of James II, and proved equally popular in rural areas, where competitions involving plenty of food –and drink – attracted large audiences in the 19th century.
IT
IS SO ENCOURAGING TO HAVE RECEIVED SO MUCH SUPPORT, AND AN INDICATION OF JUST HOW MUCH THE BELLS OF WHALLEY CONTINUE TO BE APPRECIATED
Whalley Bell Ringers practice on Tuesday evenings and regularly ring for Sunday services. They are part of the Ribble Valley Ringing Group, which also includes Bolton-by-Bowland, Clitheroe, Gisburn and Waddington. Other churches in the area have bells, too, including Downham and Great Mitton.
Whalley’s Tower Captain and Ringing Master Adrian West speaks with passion about bell ringing as he recalls one enthusiast who was still ringing regularly at the age of 91 and another who rang to mark Victory in Europe Day in 1945 and again in 2020 to celebrate its 75th anniversary.
“We’re always delighted to welcome new ringers,” says Adrian, who is planning a beginners’ course soon. “It’s open to anyone over the age of about 10. You don’t need to be musical or mathematical, you just need to be able to recognise patterns. We are often short of ringers but being part of the Ribble Valley group allows churches to help each other out and gives us a chance to ring at other churches.”
The bells remained in place as the Whalley refurbishment was carried out. The work included replacing rope pulleys, adding new bell mounting bolts, the refurbishment of the main wheels, new ceiling bosses for the bell ropes and lifting
the bells to change the main bearings –a considerable task as the tenor bell weighs 21cwt. The ropes were also replaced and rerouted and the clappers removed and sent to Dorset where they were given a facelift by Nicholson Engineering Ltd. Under the watchful eye of Nicholson’s bell hanger, volunteers from Whalley Bell Ringers and other local towers, worked hard on the refurbishment over five weeks.
BELL RINGING GRIPS PEOPLE. THEY BECOME CAPTIVATED BY IT AND IT REALLY DOES BECOME A HABIT FOR LIFE
But perhaps of most immediate interest to nearby residents is the soundproofing. “We’ve had special electrically operated shutters made to cover the windows in the bell chamber,” said Adrian. “This should reduce the noise to the general level of traffic in the area and allow us to practice and run beginners courses without worrying too much about the neighbours. Of course, for services, weddings and big national or local

events, it will be business as usual.”
Vicar of St Mary’s the Rev Jonathan Carmyllie said he was grateful for the help and support of local residents and organisations. “I give a heartfelt thanks to all those who have contributed to making the appeal and refurbishment project such
an outstanding success, both in terms of fund raising and in time and labour,” he said. “It is so encouraging to have received so much support, and an indication of just how much the bells of Whalley continue to be appreciated.” n

GETTING YOUR AFFAIRS IN ORDER
Katy Shakeshaft, wills and probate specialist at Farleys Solicitors, gives her advice on estate planning
Getting organised? Putting all your ducks in a row? Sorting your life out? However you phrase it, we all hit a point where we want to step back from our busy lives and ensure our affairs are in order. Ensuring your loved ones are protected when you’re no longer around should rank high on that to-do list.
Have you considered what would happen to your assets when you pass away? Perhaps you have a will in place, but it hasn’t been revised to take into account recent life events or new, significant assets. Do you have plans in place for small children or pets if you are no longer around?
WHAT SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN A WILL?
When you’re drafting or revising a will, there are certain things you should ensure are included:
• Physical assets – This can include everything from small personal items such as jewellery and sentimental possessions but also sizable assets like real estate and business. You can be specific by leaving assets to certain people or include a wider provision passing classes of items to named beneficiaries or classes of beneficiaries.
IF YOU ARE A PARENT TO CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 18, INCLUDING PROVISION FOR THEM OR ANY FUTURE CHILDREN IN YOUR WILL IS IMPORTANT
• Digital assets – In an increasingly digital world, many of our assets can be found in a digital format, such as online storage accounts, social media accounts, betting accounts and content stored on smartphones or computers. This also includes online bank accounts and digital cryptocurrency. If digital assets are not specified in a will, it can be incredibly difficult and
sometimes costly for loved ones to gain access to them.
• Provisions for children – If you are a parent to children under the age of 18, including provision for them or any future children in your will is important. You can set out your wishes for guardian(s) to take care of your children and include wishes for where they might live, go to school and how they receive your funds.
• Provision for pets – In the same way as provisions for children are specified in a will, you can include your wishes for your pets too. This might include who they live with and designated funds to support that arrangement.
• Funeral plans – If you have specific wishes for your funeral, for example, whether you want to be buried or cremated, we advise these are included in your will.
This is just a brief overview of what you should consider when drafting or reviewing a will. We would always advise that you instruct a solicitor to ensure that nothing important has been missed. n
If you would like to discuss the drafting of a will or any other aspect of estate planning, please contact Farleys Solicitors on 01254 368040, email: info@farleys.com, or visit our website for more information: farleys.com
IN THE SADDLE
As the year comes to a close, Chipping Pony Club members remember some of the stand-out moments of 2024, writes Megan Conlon.
Photography: Ribble Valley Broadcast
As we begin to wrap up warm during the cold winter months, we reminisce on those final weeks of summer and all the fun we had at Chipping Pony Club.
We had the pleasure and privilege of putting on some demonstrations at local country shows, the first of which was on home turf at Chipping Agricultural Show. Our branch secretary and founder, Daphne Garment, was president of the 2024 show and wanted Chipping Pony Club to be at the heart of the action. A crowd lined the main arena as our members entered, excited and ready. We put on a furiously speedy mounted games demonstration, where our super successful teams could show off their skills and get the crowd cheering for their favourites. This was followed by a show jumping display, in which members paired up to do a round of jumps with one person doing the first half and the other finishing it off. But, after all this, the grand finale loomed – the musical ride. This had been
prepared at both our senior and junior camps and involved 22 members! Creating beautiful formations in the ring, all set to well-known film and television theme tunes, it was a brilliant display enjoyed by many at the show.
WE PUT ON A FURIOUSLY SPEEDY MOUNTED GAMES DEMONSTRATION, WHERE OUR SUPER SUCCESSFUL TEAMS COULD SHOW OFF THEIR SKILLS
Not long after, we attended Kilnsey Show with our mounted games members. This was a joint display with Blackburn Pony Club and the scale of the show was unlike anything our members had experienced. While parents set up the games’ equipment, members familiarised their ponies with the arena and before long the flag went down and they were off! Crowds cheering and hearts pounding, members raced up and down
placing objects on tables, bending through poles and vaulting all at high speed!
Back to the present and as the seasons turn, it has meant the start of the Winter League competitions once more, starting with the age 10 and under show jumping. We are delighted that Toby came fourth overall! Following this, we had the first of the Winter League Mounted Games competitions, where our novice junior team came fifth out of 12. We were delighted with this result as it
shows how hard members worked over summer and they have improved their placing from last year. The more experienced juniors also did superbly, finishing second – only missing the winning spot by one point!
Coming up, we have lots of events on. The Winter League Dressage will begin, and in the other disciplines it will continue and there will be plenty of opportunities to qualify for the Winter Championships. As a club, we are also running an Arena Eventing competition using the fabulous facilities at Kelsall which promises to be another stellar event. Despite being a smaller branch, opportunities such as this are abundant, even at this time of year! n
If you’d like to know more about Pony Club, in particular Chipping Branch, please contact the District Commissioner Joanne Conlon 01200 445143 or email: chipping@pcuk.org
SENSATIONAL SALES AT NEWMARKET!
It’s been an exciting few weeks for Jason Fildes who bought six yearlings at the recent Newmarket Yearling Sale, which attracted many of the racing superpowers
The Tattersalls Newmarket October
Yearling Sale was quite an exceptional event. Boosted by new investors from the football world, overseas bidders from Canada, Japan, USA and the Middle East plus the racing superpowers of the Irish (Coolmore) versus Godolphin (Sheikh Mohammed) receipts for the whole sale exceeded 200 million guineas for the first time.
A total of 1,416 horses were sold over the course of eight days for an average price of approximately £160,000 each!
As you might imagine with the top lots reaching in excess of four million, it was hard to comprehend what we were witnessing.
These are yearlings who were only foaled in early 2023 and who haven’t even galloped, yet they are being sold for mind boggling money. It just shows what happens when the uber-wealthy come out to play and in terms
of Book 1 (the top sale) play might be the operative word!
Some prospective owners choose only to shop at Book 1 where you will find the sales company’s hand-picked blue bloods that are sons and daughters of the great sires like Frankel, Galileo, Dubawi (see the article in the last issue). These days if you want Frankel to cover your mare it’s a cool £450,000 payable on the birth of a live foal.
A TOTAL OF 1,416 HORSES WERE SOLD OVER THE COURSE OF EIGHT DAYS FOR AN AVERAGE PRICE OF APPROXIMATELY £160,000 EACH!
Admittedly some of the prices paid at Book 1 defied all logic but it is worth remembering that many of those investing at Book 1 do not
make their fortunes from racing. Rather, this is where they choose to spend their leisure time and their money and if you want to give yourself the best chance of winning major races then this is the place to be.
The owner of Premier League Wolves, Evangelos Marinakis was a new name at the sales. Forbes list his estimated net worth at $3.8 billion so the 4,400,000 guineas he and football agent Kia Joorabchian paid for the blue-blooded Frankel filly was just pocket money. Moreover, Marinakis was not by any means, the wealthiest individual in the room!
Will there be expensive failures from this year’s sale? Without a doubt. But by the same token, there will also be rags-to-riches stories with horses completely outperforming more modest price tags. This is all part of what makes racing so compelling and why one – or all – of the six yearlings that I have bought for an average price of about £40k, could be the ones to hit the jackpot in 2025!
Please see the details below. All shares include purchase and all first year training and racing costs:

Live Magazines’ Tedd Walmsley urges readers to support local businesses and wonders why Whalley’s nightlife culture has been likened to the ‘Wild West’
They say that timing is everything so to go to print the day before a ‘once-in-a-generation’ budget looks a little shoddy.
By the time you read this article it will be determined whether I, alongside tens of thousands of other small businesses, are deemed to be working people!
We will need to pick this up in January no doubt.
One thing that is certain - our wonderful hospitality sector here in the Ribble Valley could be the most affected by the proposed changes. Can I urge you over the next few months to support them? Their fears are well founded and could see many not able to take on extra costs. The results could be disastrous.
Last month we read an article from the leader of RVBC outlining his concerns and fears if Lancashire becomes a victim of devolutionthe thoughts of many are that this would be catastrophic for rural economies such as the Ribble Valley. This is particularly concerning given the huge reserves built up by the council and not spent on capital projects.
If devolution goes ahead this pot of funding would be lost and used undoubtedly in other parts of the county. I urge the council to crack on whilst they still can and agree what can be put in place before decisionmaking is taken away. There is talk of a referendum but I doubt it will affect the outcome.
Look out for the English Devolution Bill which I’m told will be published before Christmas. This may well set out a timeframe - this is huge and should not be ignored.
Iam sorry to harp on about the HARP project, but it is fast approaching. I was drawn to an article in the local press which suggested that RVBC hadn’t done enough in terms of an economic impact study. The five-year-plus project will trundle
through the beautiful countryside and no doubt badly affect many rural businesses notably in Waddington, Grindleton, Sawley and Chatburn. I fear that officers and many councillors have no firsthand experience on the hard work and endeavour put in by the small businesses that bring money through tourism to the area. I will also be pushing for more understanding in 2025 as the project draws ever closer.
Whalley is in the news but not necessarily for all the right reasons.
County councillors Hindle and Mirfin are pushing in every direction to resurrect meetings with the Environment Agency over continued fears around flooding. There seems to be some political shenanigans between the new Labour MP and Conservative County Councillors - party politics must be pushed to one side surely! I believe meetings are now set for the next few weeks and I sincerely hope a plan can be put in place to avoid any future problems.
Talking of problems I’m indebted to local residents who made me aware of a recent newspaper article suggesting Whalley is now like the ‘Wild West’ during the weekend. The article talked of drug-taking and dealing, open sexual activity and general depravity leaving residents in shock and having to stage clean-up operations after the revellers have left. I would love to hear more from those who have to deal with the consequences.
Whatever happened to the Whalley that ranked so highly in the Sunday Times’ ‘Best Places to Live’ and what can be done about it? I believe the Licensing Committees are meeting to review the situation.
Ihad hoped to bring you news on the Waddow Hall sale but I’m told that the sale hasn’t yet been completed and therefore the role of the trust at this stage, is unclear.
This does seem to be dragging on and needs a resolution. I am so cynical these days - my fear is that the new owners are sitting on a huge land bank and with big targets of new-build in the forthcoming years and with the potential of devolution, it’s only a matter of time before houses are built on the site. I only hope I’m wrong.
This is our last magazine before Christmas and it’s full of local businesses who need your support , just as they have supported me, as it’s vital that our local economy remains strong. You can play your part by shopping local.
Be kind to each other and have a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous 2025. n
The views above are my own and I’d be delighted to get some replies to my questions and will report back on any progress and positive outcomes.

He went on to become a football manager enjoying considerable success locally and had the great honour of leading Clitheroe out at Wembley in the 1996 FA Vase final.

He first began golfing at Clitheroe joining as a junior in 1969 when he had a handicap of nine. And while his footballing career limited his time on the golf course, following his retirement he became more involved in the club becoming course chairman and then course director for around seven years.
I WAS ABSOLUTELY HONOURED WHEN I WAS ASKED TO BECOME CAPTAIN
He also helped form a thriving volunteer group at the golf club to support the green staff. Delighted at the prospect of becoming captain he said: “My mum was lady captain in the 90s and my dad turned down the opportunity of becoming captain on at least one occasion so I was absolutely honoured when I was asked to become captain in my 56th year as a member.” n

RESPONSIBILITIES OF EXECUTORS AND ADMINISTRATORS
Getting professional help when navigating the estate administration process after someone dies brings peace of mind, advises Rebecca Scaturro of Forbes Solicitors
When someone passes away, who has the authority to administer the deceased’s estate depends on whether they passed away with or without a will. If the deceased passes away with a will, the responsibility falls on the executors named in the will. If the deceased passed away without a will, the law stipulates an order of priority of who has the authority to take on the role of administrator. Executors and administrators are collectively known as personal representatives. The first stage is to establish whether the deceased made a valid will and to locate it.
The personal representatives must then find and value all the assets and liabilities in the
estate and notify the financial institutions of the death. Personal representatives could be held liable by a beneficiary if not all assets are located, valued and collected. Financial searches, accessible through legal professionals, can be carried out to uncover unknown accounts.
The valuations of the assets and liabilities are then used to assess whether the estate will be subject to Inheritance Tax, after considering what exemptions and reliefs may be available. Assets gifted by the deceased in their lifetime, including assets which they retained a benefit from, may also need to be included in the calculation for Inheritance Tax. Any Inheritance Tax must be paid by the end of the sixth month after the date of death, otherwise, interest will accrue.
THE ESTATE ADMINISTRATION PROCESS CAN BE COMPLEX AND TIME-CONSUMING
The personal representatives can then apply to the Probate Registry for the Grant of Representation. On the application, the personal representatives sign a declaration to confirm they will collect in the whole estate, keep an inventory of the estate, and a full account of how the estate has been distributed.
The grant, once issued, can then be used to
collect in the assets and any outstanding liabilities can be settled. This includes finalising the income tax and capital gains tax position of the estate. Personal representatives can protect themselves from being liable for any unknown creditors by placing a notice in The Gazette (the official public record) and a local newspaper. Claims can also be made against the estate in the six months following the issue of the grant by anyone who believes they are entitled to benefit.
To evidence all the financial transactions that have occurred during the administration of an estate, detailed estate accounts should be prepared for scrutiny by the beneficiaries before the estate can be finalised.
HOW WE CAN HELP

EXPLORING AUSTRALIA: A JOURNEY OF A LIFETIME
Dan Hyams recently returned from an awe-inspiring trip to Australia where he encountered many memorable experiences
There’s always something special about travelling with family, and my trip to Australia with my dad, Nigel, was nothing short of incredible. Together, we explored the untamed beauty of the Northern Territory, experienced the awe-inspiring landscapes of Uluru and Kings Canyon, and soaked up the vibrant energy of Melbourne and its surrounding natural sights. Along the way, we didn’t just visit Australia’s famous sights, we created memories that will last a lifetime.
DARWIN AND KAKADU: WHERE TROPICAL WILDERNESS MEETS ANCIENT CULTURE
Our journey began with a flight from Singapore to Darwin, where we picked up our rental car and headed to the Palms City Resort, our home base in this tropical northern city. Darwin’s laid-back charm and balmy evenings were the perfect introduction to Australia. The highlight?
Taking a dip in the ‘Cage of Death’ at Crocosaurus Cove which brought us within touching distance of a six-metre croc as it tucked into it’s dinner – thankfully not us!
From Darwin, we ventured into Kakadu National Park, a place where the ancient world feels almost alive. Staying at the Cooinda Lodge, we immersed ourselves
in Kakadu’s rich Aboriginal culture and stunning natural beauty. A scenic flight with Kakadu Air over the Stone Country offered us jaw-dropping views of wetlands, escarpments and ancient rock art. But the most unforgettable moment was the Yellow Water Sunrise Cruise – drifting along the wetlands at dawn, spotting crocodiles and witnessing the beauty of the Kakadu wilderness in a way that felt almost otherworldly.
If you’re after a blend of adventure and culture, Kakadu offers a unique experience that will leave you spellbound. Whether it’s watching crocodiles in their natural habitat or discovering the oldest living culture on earth, this part of Australia is an absolute must for any traveller.
ALICE SPRINGS, KINGS CANYON & ULURU: THE ETHEREAL RED CENTRE
Next, we flew to Alice Springs, the gateway to Australia’s Red Centre. From the moment we touched down, the landscape’s striking red soil and wide-open skies captivated us. Our Red Centre experience began with an Intrepid tour, camping in the heart of the outback and trekking the stunning landscapes of Kings Canyon, Yulara and Kata Tjuta, all the while being regaled with the founding stories of the Aboriginal custodians of the lands we visited.
No trip to Australia is complete without a visit to Uluru. We stayed at the luxurious Sails in the Desert, where we enjoyed every bit of comfort while being just steps away from one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders. Watching the sun set over Uluru as drones retold Aboriginal stories in the skies during the Wintjiru Wiru sunset dinner was an emotional experience.
Exploring the sacred sites of Uluru and Kata Tjuta, we gained a deeper understanding of the Aboriginal cultural significance of these landmarks. From the spiritual Field of Light installation at sunrise to hiking the rim of Kings Canyon, the Red Centre is full of moments that make you stop in your tracks and simply marvel at nature. The serenity and vastness of this region offer a unique experience that will resonate with any traveller looking for a deeper connection to the land.
MELBOURNE, PHILLIP ISLAND, AND THE YARRA VALLEY: NATURE MEETS CITY LIFE
Our final leg took us to Melbourne, a city that perfectly blends culture, food and nature. We kicked off our visit with a VIP experience at the Melbourne Sky Deck, soaking in panoramic views of the city at sunset. The next day, we explored the renowned Melbourne Zoo before diving into the city’s foodie scene on a cultural tour that showcased Melbourne’s incredible culinary diversity.
But Melbourne isn’t just about city life, its surrounding natural attractions are just as captivating. We embarked on a day trip along the Great Ocean Road, where the dramatic coastal views left us speechless, especially at the iconic Twelve Apostles. We then drove to Phillip Island, where we stayed at the Ramada Resort and loved the relaxed pace of life surrounded by birdlife of all kinds –
finally seeing our first wild Kookaburras! Sadly a rare storm meant we missed out on the Penguin Parade but this is a must for anyone visiting the island. Up to 2000 penguins swim back to shore and waddle up to their nests to tuck in for the night.
Our journey concluded in the Yarra Valley, where we relaxed in the beautiful countryside, sampling wines at Dominique Portet vineyard and enjoying the slower pace of life. Staying at Oscar’s on the Yarra in Warburton, we wrapped up our trip in style, exploring the rainforests, the Californian Redwoods and dining in some delightful spots including Babaji’s, specialising in Keralan cuisine.
PLAN YOUR VERY OWN ADVENTURE DOWN UNDER
Australia offers an incredible range of experiences, from tropical wilderness to outback adventure and city sophistication, and our trip covered it all. Whether you’re a nature lover, a history enthusiast, or a foodie, this diverse country has something for everyone. If you’ve been dreaming of exploring Australia, I would love to help you plan the perfect trip – one filled with memorable moments and extraordinary sights.

Gilpin Hotel & Lake House in the Lake District has been awarded two Michelin keys in the first ceremony of its kind for the UK and Ireland
The brand new One, Two and Three Key distinctions have been awarded to the most outstanding hotels.
Two Key properties are described by Michelin as those which ‘significantly add to your experience as a traveller, each vetted by hotel experts and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design; quality and consistency of service; overall

Special praise was reserved for the restaurants at the property, including SOURCE at Gilpin Hotel which Michelin highlighted as ‘perhaps’ Gilpin’s ‘greatest draw, serving sophisticated, award-winning dishes crafted from local Cumbrian ingredients’.
The hotel has also been recognised with a Condé Nast Traveller’s 2024 Reader’s Choice Award in the annual awards which rates the best hotels in the world according to Condé

TENNIS RISING STAR
Stonyhurst College pupil Annabel excelled on the tennis courts in October, winning the U14 Winter Regional Tour title in Leeds. With determination and skill, she overcame four of the North Region’s top players. Each match highlighted her talent, impressing spectators with her precision and agility. Lifting the trophy marked another significant achievement in her young tennis career.
PARIS PARALYMPIAN
Westholme School recently welcomed back former student and recent Paris Paralympian swimmer, Mark Tompsett, to inspire current pupils with his achievements. Mark, who won bronze in the men’s 100m backstroke returned to meet with Prep students and with him, he brought several pieces of Paralympic memorabilia including his impressive bronze medal in a Louis Vuitton box which contained a small piece of the Eiffel Tower. Mark made time to answer lots of questions and also meet some students on the current Westholme swimming team.
CROSS COUNTRY SUCCESS
A team of eight Oakhill pupils took part in the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Cross Country competition at Witton Park in Blackburn. This involved competing against pupils from other schools in year group competitions. Jack from Year 11 achieved an amazing first place in the Year 10/11 race, an achievement he has been working towards for a long time. His younger sister, Emily, from Year 9 also did the school proud, with a brilliant finish in fifth place in the Year 8/9 race. Jaxon from Year 7 worked hard to achieve a top 30 place. Oakhill is tremendously proud of all our runners who gave it their all, and pushed themselves to achieve their best. Well done, everyone!
LEADING THE WAY
Burnley College is proud to announce its participation in a ground-breaking national trial, becoming one of the first UK colleges to offer innovative modular courses for degree-level learners. The initiative underscores Burnley College’s commitment to setting new standards in giving individuals specialist skills without the financial or time commitment of a long qualification. Neil Burrows, Director of Skills and Innovation, said: “This significant shift away from traditional, rigid training programmes allows us to empower individuals to take control of their professional development in a way that perfectly aligns with their specific career needs.”
CYCLING FUNDRAISER
A group of 13 Oakhill pupils, staff and parents took on the challenge of raising £5000 for Pendleside Hospice by cycling the length of Britain – a total of 800 miles. Their journey took them from Dover to Durness in Scotland. The team cycled over 12 days, covering distances up to 85 miles a day, and camping each night in a variety of locations. Oakhill is particularly proud of the six youngsters aged 14 to 16, who successfully cycled the full distance, smashing their target by raising over £7100 for the Hospice.

TRANSFORMING FUTURES
A
significant investment in the new Higher Line provision at Stonyhurst College is transforming the Sixth Form experience, catering to the evolving needs of today’s young adults
The innovative Sixth Form space at Stonyhurst provides senior pupils with transformative opportunities, unlocking a diverse array of educational and career pathways. This thoughtfully designed environment combines a structured and comprehensive timetable with a strong emphasis on promoting independence
The investment in the Sixth Form (Higher Line) areas significantly enriches the curriculum, facilitating pupils’ seamless transition to university and the professional world. At the core of Higher Line is the Stonyhurst ethos of nurturing ‘men and women for others’, which fosters leadership among pupils.
For 16 to 18-year-olds, joining the Sixth Form at Stonyhurst gives them a new perspective, presenting them with a chance to flourish and discover career paths that align with their interests.
The newly designed common rooms, known throughout the College as ‘Playrooms,’ feature dedicated study areas and inviting relaxation spaces.
STONYHURST’S STRONG ALUMNI NETWORK CONNECTS YOUNG PEOPLE WITH GLOBAL LEADERS WHO OFFER VALUABLE INSIGHTS AND GUIDANCE IN THEIR RESPECTIVE FIELDS
PLAYROOMS & STUDY AREAS
The term ‘Playroom’ is a long-held tradition at Stonyhurst and is derived from the emphasis on drama within a Jesuit education.
The new Poetry (Year 12) and Rhetoric (Year 13) Playrooms have been created to encourage study and interaction. The areas
are bright and contemporary, thoughtfully designed to reflect the typical working environments of the 21st century.
A global perspective is a defining feature of the school, particularly within Higher Line, where pupils are not only prepared for their next educational or career steps but are empowered to explore opportunities around the world.
One of the expansive new areas evokes a classic Oxford-style university common room, creating a prestigious yet comfortable environment. It features traditional leather Chesterfields and walls adorned with historic Stonyhurst photographs, while other spaces embrace a more relaxed, contemporary university campus feel.
COLLABORATIONS
Collaboration is key to the new Higher Line zones where pupils and teachers work together, as Assistant Head Edward Allanson explains:
“In today’s environment employees or university students may not have their own workspace, they may be ‘hot desking’ so pupils need to be prepared to adapt to different spaces to work effectively.
“The new Higher Line spaces empower pupils to collaborate on various projects in group settings. These distinctive areas encourage a sense of independence, distinguishing senior pupils as they take charge of their learning experience.’’
In addition to the new Higher Line areas, Sixth Formers have access to further spaces for independent study, including Stonyhurst’s historic libraries, cultivating a spirit of autonomy in their academic pursuits.
CURRICULUM
New Sixth Formers joining the College in Year 12, in addition to those who have had the advantage and continuity of a Stonyhurst education from a young age, are offered three different routes of study – as opposed to the traditional single A level route.
Study options include the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, A levels and the Cambridge Technical Diploma (CTEC) in Sport or Business.
These three pathways provide flexibility, allowing for tailored programmes that align with each pupil’s learning profile, university goals and future career aspirations.
“Depending on the year group, around a third to a half of pupils go down the IB route,” explains Mr Allanson.
“It’s an amazing course with a global approach – it is an important part of who we are at Stonyhurst.”
The Class of 2024 achieved an impressive average of 145 UCAS points, which equates to three A grades at A level, highlighting the exceptional academic standards at Stonyhurst.
UNIVERSITY PREPARATION
Stonyhurst pupils benefit from a dedicated Careers Department that provides an extensive range of resources and expert advice to help them navigate their future choices. Engaging assemblies are held to explore various career paths and university options, including opportunities at institutions worldwide and apprenticeships. Stonyhurst’s strong alumni network connects young people with global leaders who offer valuable insights and guidance in their respective fields.
The Careers Department at Stonyhurst is an invaluable resource. The team assists pupils in preparing for their futures beyond Stonyhurst, providing insight into a variety of options and empowering them to make informed decisions.
Mr Allanson adds: “We collaborate closely
with organisations to stay informed about industry trends, ensuring that our pupils leave Stonyhurst fully prepared for the future.’’
UNICORN COFFEE SHOP
The newly created Higher Line spaces include the Unicorn Coffee Shop, formerly a common room, which has been transformed into an exclusive haven for Sixth Form pupils to relax, socialise and enjoy snacks or a light lunch—distinct from the main College refectory. This vibrant environment radiates the lively atmosphere of a high street coffee shop.
WE COLLABORATE CLOSELY WITH ORGANISATIONS TO STAY INFORMED ABOUT INDUSTRY TRENDS, ENSURING THAT OUR PUPILS LEAVE STONYHURST FULLY PREPARED FOR THE FUTURE
LEADERSHIP AND MENTORING
Although the new space is designated for Higher Line, interaction between senior and younger pupils is promoted. Sixth Formers are encouraged to cultivate vital leadership
skills through a pupil-led initiative called Stonyhurst Line Families, designed to connect pupils across all year groups. “There is no superiority attached to Higher Line as every pupil is an essential part of the College,” explains Mr. Allanson.
Mentoring and mixing with younger pupils has formed a crucial part of the recent integration of Years 7 and 8 into the main college building – bringing the College in line with other educational settings. The 11 and 12-year-olds, formerly accommodated in Stonyhurst’s Prep School, now have dedicated classrooms and Playrooms known as Aloysius House: “The Sixth Formers have played a major part in welcoming Year 7 and 8 pupils to the College, talking them through the way things work.
“For Higher Line, this gives the senior pupils a real sense of supporting the younger ones, a tangible sense of leadership that works on every level.” n

SERIOUS FUN
The inspirational co-curricular programme at Westholme helps pupils develop important life skills, but it also gives the school community the opportunity for some serious fun
Delivering an all-round education provides pupils with many and varied skills and attributes, as well as the advantages of being academic high achievers.
At Westholme School, the mission is to develop the whole child through a wide range of world class opportunities, inside and outside the classroom.
Students develop robust life skills that allow them to thrive and succeed whatever their interests, as principal Paul Taylor explains: “Pupils develop their skillsets and personalities so that they are ready for the challenges of later life. Our pupils also learn to take responsibility for themselves and for those around them, fostering values that generate young people who are ready to make an impact on the world around them.”
A rich programme of co-curricular activities at Westholme has been developed to complement the academic provision.
“Whether it’s in performing arts or sport or one of many other opportunities, these are often the times when pupils develop their personalities and what we at Westholme know as the 21st century essential skills,” adds Mr Taylor, who was previously Head of Kings’ School Al Barsha in Dubai.
“We focus on the all-round development of every individual child and ensure that the right level of support and challenge is in place.”
Focusing on new experiences, Westholme’s co-curricular programme includes visits from inspirational professionals as well as a whole host of opportunities for pupils to become involved in various activities including the performing arts.
ASTRONAUT TIM PEAKE
During World Space Week, astronaut Tim Peake recently spoke to Westholme Prep along with pupils from 25 local primary schools about his space travels.
Sharing first-hand experiences, Tim recounted his path from a sky-gazing child to British Army pilot and then to becoming the sole British astronaut selected by the European Space Agency.
His young audience was captivated as he told stories of his time aboard the International Space Station (ISS) during 2015-16, where he saw 16 sunrises and sunsets daily and

He spoke about the food he ate on board and the numerous events he took part in from space that were televised back on earth, including a countdown to the London Marathon, presenting a Brit Award and kicking off the rugby Six Nations.
WE FOCUS ON THE ALL-ROUND DEVELOPMENT OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL CHILD
Concluding with a lively Q&A session, he ignited students’ interest further with his hope of joining an all-UK crew on a future mission.
“It was incredibly exciting to have Britain’s first ISS astronaut join us at Westholme,” says Mr Taylor.
“Tim’s visit left lasting impressions, encouraging young minds to explore their full potential.”
ALADDIN JR
Lower Senior performing arts students certainly explored their full potential when they showcased their musical and theatrical talents in the dazzling Aladdin Jr. The audience in Westholme’s Croston Theatre were thrilled by the magical adventure – the story of Aladdin is a tale packed with courage, adventure and magic, and the talented students gave it their all!
The stage looked fantastic with lighting effects and a backdrop that transformed the space into an Arabian landscape. The students captured the atmosphere of the story perfectly and there was even a flying carpet!
With such a high-calibre, co-curricular
programme, Westholme pupils are given the opportunity to flourish, to discover what they enjoy and find where their talents lie.
Mr Taylor concludes: “Our mission at Westholme is to develop better students and better people. This is serious work, but our community of pupils, teachers and parents also have serious fun.” n

The very same year, James went on to form a stove company called Smith and Wellstood, which became known as ESSE soon after.
ESSE’s story has continued to be just as full of adventure and innovation in the 170 years since its founding.
A long-standing business that was established back in 1854, ESSE is celebrating 170 years
In 1854, a young man called James Smith was shipwrecked in the Atlantic on a return trip from America to Scotland. He survived by floating in a zinc-lined wicker basket until he was rescued three days later.
Shackleton relied upon an ESSE ‘Mrs Sam’ cooker in his Antarctic expedition hut (where it can still be seen) and Florence Nightingale wrote a letter of thanks to the company for the lifesaving warmth their stoves provided at her Balaclava Hospital.
ESSE s HAVE BEEN USED EVERYWHERE FROM THE PRESTIGIOUS KITCHENS OF THE SAVOY IN LONDON TO ROYAL RESIDENCES
More recently, top British climber Alan Hinkes, used a specially adapted ESSE to heat his base camp in the Himalayas.
ESSEs have been used everywhere from the prestigious kitchens of the Savoy in London to royal residences and on TV at River Cottage. The firm is now under the direction of brothers Robert and Peter Ashby the third generation of this family to manage ESSE at its Barnoldswick base, and they believe the adventures are far from over.
“I wouldn’t call ESSE a ‘historic brand’ as such,” says Finance Director Robert.
“It’s certainly not stuck in the past. ESSE might even be better described as a modern company with 170 years’ experience.
“There’s no way a British brand could remain successful for more than a century and a half without adapting, evolving and constantly meeting the needs of modern homeowners.
That’s what ESSE has consistently done throughout every decade since 1854.”
AS WE HEAD INTO OUR 171ST YEAR AS A LEADING BRITISH MASTER STOVE MAKER, WE’LL CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON PERFORMANCE AND EFFICIENCY
Throughout the last 170 years ESSE stoves and range cookers have been prized for their clean-burning operation and versatility. While modern stove companies might claim to have invented systems for re-burning smoke particles before the gases reach the flue, the ESSE Pioneer stove was already doing this by 1919.
ESSE’s innovative inset stoves, introduced in the early 1900s, proved incredibly popular as a more efficient alternative to an open fire. They helped British homeowners make the best use of fuel, which was much appreciated during the subsequent war years when purse strings were tight and resources were rationed.
ESSE has evidently continued to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to fuel efficiency and sustainability with the company’s wood-burning stoves currently proving to be some of the most exceptionally clean burning on the market, exceeding all legislation and requirements to the extent that they can even be used in smoke control zones.
“Our 1000 W wood-burning range cooker releases just 0.04 CO emissions and as little as 20mg/mo ³ of combustion dust,” explains Production Director Peter.
“But we haven’t compromised on cooking performance in favour of sustainability – it ticks all the boxes at once. It gives dependable cooking performance and room-filling radiant heat, and it’s even available with a domestic hot water boiler. It uses patented catalytic technology to clean the emissions and re-burn smoke particles, just like some of ESSE’s pioneering early models.
“Customers have always appreciated ESSEs for their clean-burning and efficient design. It’s highlighted in adverts from the 1950s and it’s still a key focus now.
“ESSE range cookers are available as efficient electric versions with innovative induction hobs, all without compromising on their capacity for hearty traditional cooking.
“As we head into our 171st year as a leading British master stove maker, we’ll continue to focus on performance and efficiency while maintaining the stunning aesthetics that make ESSEs so recognisable.
“I’m confident that the way we’ll achieve a comparable level of success over the next 170 years, is by displaying the same
commitment to British quality and longevity of design that brought ESSE to this point.”
Iconic ESSE models (like the Ironheart) are still in daily use by the River Cottage team, and are a familiar sight more locally – in Ribble Valley venues like the Waddington Arms, Dale House Barn B&B, Holmes Mill, the Higher Buck, Assheton Arms, Barley Mow and the Forest at Fence. n

POLE POSITION
With its sleek new look, the fourth generation BMW 1 Series is mightily impressive, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Peter Austin
When vying for attention and acclaim in an over-crowded and ultra-competitive market you have to be very good. No, erase that – you have to be exceptional.
Additionally, the car-buying public in the premium compact segment is not short on choice. Consequently standards are high and demands even higher.
But BMW has never shirked a challenge and the ‘baby’ in its famous family – the big-selling 1 Series – has more than held its own for some time now.
Some say it is BMW’s best-ever motor and sales figures and popularity ratings would lend support to that view.
But to sit back and wallow is to run the risk of sliding into reverse, so please welcome the FOURTH generation of the BMW 1 Series –and stand by to be impressed.
This new generation covers all bases with a sportier appearance, more efficient engine, a hi-tech interior and genuine kerb appeal. Somehow you know at first glance that this is the real deal.
The visual and mechanical changes are significant, although the new look is clearly based on the predecessor.
Unmistakably a 1 Series, but you can’t help
notice the sleeker and longer bonnet with swept-back LED headlights and the sharper, more angular surfacing. The roofline is dynamic and the kidney grille is now a smart, single, vented panel, comprising vertical and diagonal bars which also houses the sensors and radars for the Driver Assistance systems.
THIS CLEAN, UNCLUTTERED LOOK IS TOTALLY DOWN TO THE VERY LATEST TECH
On the side, a notable change is the embossed number ‘1’ on the car’s C-pillar (end-sectionof-back-door-alongside-rear-window in layman’s terms) incorporated within the iconic Hoffmeister kink.
Changes at the back are more subtle with revised LED light clusters and a fresh bumper design. Oh, and another super touch – the exhaust pipes are totally hidden (on the 120 model).
The standard LED headlights feature striking vertical elements for the daytime running light and the turn indicators. Adaptive LED headlights with glare-free matrix high beam, cornering light function and blue accents are optionally available.
Overall the new BMW 1 Series is longer and taller, but similar in width to before.
Moving inside and the first change of note
is a hugely-impressive, single-piece curved infotainment display, made up of a 10.25-inch Information Display and a 10.7-inch Control Display.
THE ROOFLINE IS DYNAMIC AND THE KIDNEY GRILLE IS NOW A SMART, SINGLE, VENTED PANEL
Note also a striking but simplistic overall appearance – it’s almost as though some things are missing, which, of course, they’re not. This clean, uncluttered look is totally down to the very latest tech with QuickSelect on-screen shortcut functions paired up with BMW Operating System 9.
In short, that equates to far fewer buttons and switches and far more finger feely involvement with the touch screen.
The body paintwork of the new BMW 1 Series is available in two solid paintwork finishes and seven metallic finishes and it is the first model in the brand’s range to be available with an optional contrasting roof paint finish.
Standing proud on top of the range is the BMW M135 xDrive with impressive fuel consumption, low CO 2 emissions, 300hp and significantly enhanced design characteristics –including four exhaust tailpipes, M kidney grille and M rear spoiler. The series also includes the 120 Sport and M Sport and the 123 M Sport xDrive and while there are differences (the M135 xDrive has 19-inch alloys as opposed to 17-inch for example) you cannot go wrong with any of the options.
Depending on your choice, you can get over 60mpg and the fastest model is capable of taking you from 0-62mph in under five seconds.
Completely leather-free as standard with space for up to five occupants, you get very comfy seats (heated as standard) and a wide range of electric adjustments, including memory on the driver’s side. Lumbar support and massage function can be added.
Automated driving and parking systems feature – Driving Assistant with front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning, Exit Warning and Traffic Sign Recognition, as well as the Parking Assistant with Reversing Assistant.
Also under the ‘standard’ headline is automatic air conditioning, electrically folding exterior mirrors and the BMW Live Cockpit Plus including the BMW Maps cloud-based navigation system.
The Innovation package includes BMW Live Cockpit Professional with BMW Head-Up Display and Augmented View on the Control Display as well as Parking Assistant Plus.
The Premium package adds telephone wireless charging, comfort access, logo projection from the exterior mirrors, automatic dimming interior mirror and adaptive LED headlights. If you want two-zone automatic air conditioning then of course you can have it, along with a panoramic glass roof and a Harman Kardon sound system.
Unfortunately the space available here does not allow for a full list of the umpteen ‘modern tech bits’ everyone needs, so take it as read that there is smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto et al.
The BMW 1 Series has always held pole position in its class and this latest generation is set to keep it that way. n

PURPOSE, POWER & POISE
The striking new Porsche 911 is nothing short of sensational, writes Paul Agnew. Photography: Peter Austin
Is there anything Porsche designers and engineers can’t do? Having just made acquaintance with the sensational and innovative new Porsche 911, it would appear not.
For they have taken a truly iconic sports car – perhaps the truly iconic sports car and most certainly a vehicle respected, loved and admired the world over – and guess what? They’ve achieved what many believed impossible – they’ve made it even better.
Not only that, they have also brought the 911 – a car steeped in tradition and motorsport – forward with purpose, power and poise to take its place at the front of the future.
From launch are two variants – the 911 Carrera and Carrera GTS. The first street-legal 911 GTS is equipped with a super-lightweight and powerful T-Hybrid system. It’s quite important at this point not to get confused by the inclusion of the word ‘hybrid’ in the name.
Essentially the 911 Carrera GTS T-Hybrid is a petrol-powered, mean machine with a newly developed 3.6-litre, flat-six cylinder ‘boxer’ engine, electric turbocharger and electric motor which can capture kinetic energy to feed back into the battery. There are no plugs and there is no estimated electric range.
But does it hit the sweet spot and deliver in terms of true Porsche performance? You bet it does.
Combined peak power is up to 534bhp, with 610Nm of torque and it can power from 0-62mph in three seconds to reach a top speed of 194mph.
THIS IS POWERTRAIN ENGINEERING AND DIGITAL ENGINE MANAGEMENT AT ITS ABSOLUTE BEST. BUT IT’S A PORSCHE, WHAT ELSE DID YOU EXPECT?
Just in case you think you’ve mis-read that – 0-62mph in THREE seconds and a top speed of 194mph!
But there is so much more to tell you about.
For starters, a striking design with new exterior styling, optimised and active aerodynamics, a fresh interior, upgraded
standard equipment and expanded connectivity. A more sporting, streamlined exterior means improved aerodynamics and performance with changes including new, model-specific bumpers and stunning LED headlights with four-point graphic. This makes it possible to omit the front driving lights and creates space for larger cooling vents in the front of the car.
The new headlights are offered with the option of HD matrix LED functions featuring more than 32,000 light points. The high-performance high beam illuminates the road to a distance of more than 600 metres and also offers innovative additional functions such as a driving-mode-dependent dynamic cornering light, lane brightening, construction site and bottleneck light and a non-dazzling high beam that is precise to the pixel.
The redesigned light strip with an integrated arc and Porsche logo makes the tail appear deeper and a re-designed rear grille with five fins per side connects to the rear window to form a graphic unit that fades into the retractable spoiler below. The number plate is positioned higher, with a clearly structured rear bumper. Model-specific exhaust systems are elegantly integrated into the striking diffuser fins.
There is, of course, a sports exhaust system and those clever aforementioned engineers used knowledge gained from motor racing as the basis for designing the ‘hybrid’ system.
The Porsche 911 Carrera GTS rolls on 21-inch wheels with a width of 11.5 inches
and in the cockpit, you’ll discover the familiar design DNA combined with modern technology.
Driver Experience control focuses on the driver’s axis and intuitive, faster operation. Essential control elements centre directly on or around the steering wheel. These include the standard driving mode switch and revised driver assistance lever.
In the centre console storage compartment of the new 911, there is a cooled compartment for smartphones, with a wireless charging function.
The fully-digital instrument cluster houses a 12.6-inch curved display which fits elegantly into the new control and display concept and can be extensively customised.
The Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system is still operated via the high-resolution central display with a 10.9-inch screen.
ESSENTIALLY THE 911 CARRERA GTS T-HYBRID IS A PETROL-POWERED, MEAN MACHINE
There are new connectivity features with a QR code significantly simplifying the logging-on process to the PCM with the Porsche ID. Apple CarPlay® is more deeply integrated into the car and, if desired, it displays information in the instrument cluster and enables the operation of vehicle functions directly in the Apple® ecosystem, for example via the Siri® voice assistant.
Video streaming is also available (optional) and Apps like Spotify® and Apple Music® can be used as native apps in the PCM without a connected smartphone.
There is a selection of new colours, including Laguna Blue and Slate Grey Neo, and the overall look, feel and drive is exactly as you’d expect. Superb.
This is powertrain engineering and digital engine management at its absolute best. But it’s a Porsche, what else did you expect? n

finest horses and jockeys in the business. The atmosphere is electric, with Christmas carols in the background and festive treats wafting through the air. For many racing enthusiasts, it’s the perfect way to embrace the festive spirit while enjoying a flutter on the horses.

The course offers something for everyone. For the serious racing fan, there are competitive handicaps and chases to get stuck into, while for those just there for a good time, the festive atmosphere is unbeatable. Over in North Yorkshire, around 45 miles from the Ribble Valley, lies the charming Catterick Bridge Racecourse. A smaller and more traditional course, it offers a downto-earth, family-friendly racing experience that is perfect for the season. Catterick may not have the grand scale of some of its larger counterparts, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in heart and spirit.

ALL THINGS ORGANIC
Sustainability and farming for a better future is at the forefront of everything at Gazegill. Gail Bailey finds out more
“Looking back, it appears we have been on quite a journey!”
says Emma Robinson of Gazegill Organics, which is preparing for one of the busiest times of the year. “Taking the reins of a family farm with generations of ancestry behind us was daunting to say the least.”
Emma and her husband Ian’s chapter began in 2006, and they both feel extremely proud of what they have achieved in terms of diversification and growth.
“It’s difficult to see the whole picture when you are at its epicentre and taking a moment to reflect is eye opening. Taking a wholesale farming operation and changing it to a retail one threw us some challenges,
but when you believe in your product you never lose sight of your goal,” adds Ian.
Through all the changes the couple have made to the business and infrastructure, there is one constant that has remained, and that is their unfaltering commitment to organic farming and the environment: “We are often asked about organic and what it actually means.
EVERYTHING WE DO AT GAZEGILL IS ROOTED IN OUR ORGANIC PRINCIPLES
“Is it just a word? Well, it absolutely isn’t, and the bottom line is that the use of the word is a legal term and anyone who describes a food item or process as organic must have the certification to back up the claim,” Emma adds.
Organic certification is a complex process where procedures and recipes all need to be agreed by a government approved control body, and record keeping has to be detailed
as traceability is key.
“Take a ribeye steak for example,” says Ian. “Not only must the audit trail document which beef animal it came from, but it must be possible to demonstrate the feed and forage are from certified organic land over the animal’s lifespan – even down to a single field!”
There are also many other factors to consider such as restrictive use of medicines, the total ban on GMO ingredients as well as not using herbicides and pesticides: “All these processes are designed to farm to very high environmental standards, no other farming system achieves this,” he adds.
Emma says: “It’s all about soil. Everything we do at Gazegill is rooted in our organic principles. We owe our existence to the top six inches of the planet’s surface and to the fact it rains, a lot here in Lancashire!”
Soil health is key to not only sequestering masses of CO2 but also the health of animals and crops that are farmed. Ploughing vast areas of perfectly good grassland to replant it with grass makes no sense to Ian and Emma.
Ian explains: “Tons of carbon is released when land is ploughed, and that carbon capture cycle must start all over again. Under our feet tiny networks of mycelia which are often a primary factor in plant health, break down plant material and contribute to the organic fraction of the soil. More mind blowing are the networks of mycelium that connect trees in a sort of ‘wood-wide web’ through which trees communicate and share using sugar fuelled fungi, phosphorus and other mineral nutrients.”
Mother trees, which is the term for these highly connected hub trees, are the more established and typically have the most fungal connections which are then used to share deeper sources of water with small saplings.
“These hub trees detect ill health distress signals from their neighbours and send them
needed nutrients,” Emma explains. “So, the next time you walk and feel the soft forest floor under your feet marvel at the mass of communications that are taking place in silence below!”
All the processes, procedures and wonders of nature help Gazegill Organics place healthy, natural food on the shelf in their farm shop and across the pass in the restaurant. Every meal served in Eight at Gazegill begins with fantastic ingredients and develops through care and passion, either on the block or in the kitchen: “Having a farmed and foraged larder to choose from makes for a diverse and interesting menu,” says Ian. “But it also connects the dish to the farm and our amazing natural world, or at least our little corner.”
WHETHER CHOOSING SOMETHING FOR CHRISTMAS LUNCH IN THE FARM SHOP OR BROWSING THE MENUS, YOU ENTER THE GENUINE WORLD OF A ‘FARM TO FORK’ EXPERIENCE
Whether choosing something for Christmas lunch in the farm shop or browsing the exciting menus of Eight at Gazegill you enter the genuine world of a ‘farm to fork’ experience: “So our journey really begs the question – can we afford not to farm organically?
“From a bias position, we simply cannot ignore a farming system that is environmentally sound. The elephant in the room is what are we prepared to place on our tables in terms of proteins? And the answer must surely be a
variety of meat, dairy, pulses and plants that are combined together to give a balance of nutrition and provide a wide and varied diet that is driven by the seasons.”
Ian adds: “When we open the barn door to organic and regenerative agriculture we have to change our expectations in terms of availability 365 days a year – it is simply unsustainable for summer fruits to be on a shelf in January! We have maintained for years that we must eat less meat protein. However, we must eat better meat protein and this must surely be worth paying a little more for – the planet will thank you!” n

FIRST CLASS COFFEE
Lucy
Bale meets the experts at Wild Pen – a local, small batch coffee roastery. Photography: Richard TK Hawke and Lisa Vidal
Ifelt very happy with myself trotting home from the Wild Pen roastery in Barrowford after my first visit, with four bags of their delicious coffee beans under my arm.
As Tom and Milly got ready for another trip to Costa Rica to visit the Aquiares Farm, we caught up again and I was reminded just how important the end-to-end process is to them as an independent small batch roastery.
Visiting the source of the product they roast and sell ensures they meet the quality and traceability their loyal customers have come to know and love.
It should also come as no surprise that Wild Pen are equally as passionate about the people behind the product and protecting the environment in which the coffee cherries are farmed. Keep an eye out for the little frog you’ll see on the coffee packaging and on the website, denoting that the farm in Costa Rica is Rainforest Alliance Certified and as such, ensures the people and environment of Aquiares are protected through best practices.

Chef Doug Crampton and his Eight at Gazegill team are starting to prepare for the upcoming festive season and can’t wait to welcome everyone into their beautiful countryside restaurant: “We’ve had a fabulous autumn in the restaurant and a successful ‘Foragers Feast’ event,” says restaurant manager Kim Talbot. “But our thoughts now turn to the festivities, and we are so excited to share our first Christmas menu with customers.”
Special Christmas dishes begin from 14th November and continue through to 21st
CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS BEGIN…
The festive season is about to arrive at Eight at Gazegill with a wonderful winter menu in the most perfect countryside surroundings, writes Gail Bailey
December with a set Festive Menu but with the added bonus of two special Christmas Menu’s available for the 23rd and 24th December. Doug’s mouthwatering dishes as you would imagine, come with seasonal twists!
GAZEGILL IS COMMITTED TO ORGANIC, SUSTAINABLE FARMING AND THIS THREADS INTO THE VERY ETHOS OF THE DISHES CREATED BY DOUG AND HIS TEAM
Kim explains: “The Festive Menus are set in a 3-3-3 format where guests have a choice of three from each starter, main course and dessert. Some of the dishes created by our talented chef and his team include confit venison shoulder tacos with black garlic, fermented red cabbage and preserved brambles, kelp-cured cod with celeriac, Bolney English sparkling wine, mussels and dill – and desserts such as a gingerbread mince pie, Gazegill apples, finished with our signature Emma’s Dairy’ raw milk soft serve ice cream. Perfect!”
The Christmas Menus on the 23rd and
24th December differ to the Festive and are equally unique and a true taste experience: “We always have vegetarian options available and for our two special opening days we have main courses of either wood roasted sirloin ‘cottage pie’, winter pesto with red wine gravy – or wood roasted organic squash with sage and onion gnocchi, raw milk curd, picollo parsnip and candied chestnut,” Kim says. “Both dishes are accompanied by tasty and traditional roast potatoes, Yorkshire
pudding, barbecued carrots, shredded sprouts with nutmeg butter – wholesome, delicious and full of festive flavours!”
Each table at Eight has stunning views of the nature that surrounds the restaurant, cast under the ever-watchful eye of the iconic Pendle Hill. Gazegill is committed to organic, sustainable farming and produce and this threads into the very ethos of the dishes created by Doug and his team. Christmas is
the perfect time of year to experience this –celebrating the festive season with family and friends.
If you have a ‘foodie’ in your life an Eight at Gazegill gift voucher is the perfect gift.
“Eight at Gazegill is a true farm to table dining experience and our vouchers make a perfect Christmas present that can be spent on our whole menu, from a hearty and delicious brunch to our fine dining taster dinner menu,” explains Kim. Vouchers are available in £50, £75 and £100 and valid for 12 months from the date of purchase.

GIFT VOUCHERS MAKE A PERFECT CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR ANY FOOD LOVERS IN YOUR LIFE
Eight at Gazegill is not just a restaurant, it is a celebration itself of enduring legacy, where each dish tells a story of the farm heritage that is perfectly designed, matched and orchestrated by Doug and his team’s masterful skill in the kitchen. Kim says: “We want to extend all our very best wishes to all our customers for a happy and restful Christmas and look forward to welcoming everyone to experience all that Eight at Gazegill has to offer.” n

STUNNING LINE-UP
The Black Bull continues to impress with its festive line-up and unrivalled Sunday roasts, while at the Edisford Bridge weekend breakfast has become a real crowd-pleaser, writes Tedd Walmsley
It was a stunning autumn day in the Ribble Valley for my meeting with Becky the owner of the Black Bull at Old Langho. She had just taken yet another booking for her ‘Christmas Party Nights’ which are proving to be as popular as ever. As always, she’s putting the customer first by making the process of booking simple and as straightforward as possible – with the opportunity for smaller groups (under 15
covers) not needing to pre-order, which puts pressure on both the organiser and guests alike. Guests can relax in the knowledge that the evening will be a huge hit, and one to remember for colleagues, friends and families getting together pre-Christmas to get into the festive spirit. I can only recommend a phone call sooner than later to avoid the disappointment of the nights being oversubscribed. All of the information you need is displayed opposite.
The preparation for Christmas is in full flow which wouldn’t surprise you given the importance of the period to all our hospitality clients, who need your support. The first three weekends in December see Santa and his elves
visiting the pub which is going to be a huge hit with families once again – this will need to be booked in advance for sure. The run-up to Christmas looks to be about as festive as it can get with carol singers, live music, jazz and what is now becoming an institution on Boxing Day the Irish duo from 4:30pm.
The period of time between Christmas and New Year is also not to be ignored and Becky is planning a host of special activities and reasons to visit her pub. Social media will update you with all the very latest plans as they ‘go live’.
We are of course in early November and with a month before many of these events start there is still so much going on. Having been with friends for Sunday lunch just a couple of weeks ago, I was reminded just how good their roast dinner is. No surprise then that in recent weeks, both the Bull and their sister pub The Edisford Bridge, have been full each week with diners leaving replete and with positive experiences. Talking of the Edisford, they have found a new niche serving breakfast at the weekend which is proving to be very popular and something I really must try with my pals. Chef Callum is certainly turning out classic pub dishes and being supported by a returning throng of locals alongside visitors to our beautiful valley.
I also recently experienced and thoroughly enjoyed the new sandwich menu back at the Bull. My good friend Jason was in raptures and could’ve had one of the half a dozen choices from the menu – sitting by a roaring fire makes for special times as autumn moves into the cold nights of winter.
If you are a foodie like me, you may well be glued to the new series of MasterChef the professionals, which started this week. I want you to look out for one of our own in the form of Daniel Merriman – chef here at The Bull. Becky is understandably proud and thrilled to see such a talented young chef appear on such a prestigious show. Look out for his progress and to see just how far he can get in a competition with such a talented group of chefs from all around the UK.
The excitement as we build to one of the most important times in the hospitality calendar is palpable here and sees Becky prepare her teams for long shifts and fabulous events. I urge you to support them because you’ll never be disappointed with the welcome, the food nor the service.
Have a Merry Christmas at the Bull. n

WINE PAIRING CHIROUBLES DOMAINE MARC JAMBON
Julian Kaye of the Wright Wine Company, says: “Rabbit is one of the most delicate game dishes, but the prune and Trappist ale adds a depth of richness, so we need a bit of fruit in there. This is a wonderful ‘cru’ of Beaujolais, one of 10 villages allowed to use their own name as a sign of quality. Marc Jambon, a vigneron, farmer and wine maker makes this wonderful Chiroubles that brims with generous fruit and has good structure.”

ENGLISH RABBIT, FRENCH PRUNES & BELGIAN TRAPPIST ALE
For some, the idea of eating rabbit can feel a bit unfamiliar, but this is the perfect time of year to embrace it, writes chef
Michael Vanheste of Greendale Teahouse
Makes:
Serves three as a main course
Preparation time:
1 hour 30 minutes
Ingredients:
1 whole rabbit, jointed Pepper Salt
4 onions
A generous knob of butter
200g dried organic prunes (Agen, France)
2 tbsp plum or damson jam (or brown sugar)
2 tbsp flour
660ml Belgian Trappist ale (I use Orval but a good amber or brown ale will work)
2 tbsp mustard
4 bay leaves
4 sprigs thyme
3 whole cloves
Rabbit’s light gamey flavour pairs beautifully with all sorts of ingredients, like the prunes and beer in this recipe. Give it a try –you’ll be surprised how much you love it!
Method:
1. Pre-heat the oven to 175°C (fan assisted).
2. Season the rabbit, joint it, pat dry and season all sides with pepper and a pinch of salt.
3. Peel and halve the onions, then slice them into thin half-moons.
4. Melt a generous knob of butter in a large casserole pot over medium heat. Place the rabbit pieces in the pot, browning them until golden. Remove the rabbit from the pot (it won’t be fully cooked yet). If necessary, add a little more butter.
5. In the same pot, sauté the onions in the remaining butter. Stir regularly and let them soften, becoming slightly caramelised.
6. Chop any large dried prunes into bite-sized pieces (smaller prunes can be left whole) and add them to the pot.
7. Stir in the plum jam (or a little brown sugar). Lower the heat slightly, sprinkle the mixture with flour, and stir. Let it cook for a minute to form a roux.
8. Pour in the ale and add the mustard, stirring to combine and ensuring nothing sticks to the bottom. Allow the liquid to come up to the boil, then return the pieces of browned rabbit meat to the pan.
9. Bundle the thyme sprigs and bay leaves with kitchen string to form a ‘bouquet garni’. Add this to the pot, along with the cloves. Season with freshly ground pepper and a small pinch of salt.
10. Cover the pot with a tight fitting lid, place in the oven and let the rabbit simmer in the sauce for at least an hour. The meat should be tender, almost falling off the bone.
To serve:
13. Just before serving, add a small splash of vinegar to the rabbit stew and stir –this will enhance the flavour.
14. Serve: Plate up the tender pieces of rabbit, a generous helping of beer sauce with prunes. Try with a fresh endive salad and perhaps some crispy potato croquettes. n

TIPS ON TIPPING
Hospitality businesses face huge challenges – changes to legislation, retaining skilled staff, rising operational costs and consistency in providing an enhanced customer experience
If someone offered you the opportunity to save money, increase revenue, incentivise your team, improve staff retention and ensure compliance with new tipping legislation then you’d be sure to want to find out more – right?
Let me introduce to you Empower Finance’s recommended digital tipping solution – a revolutionary tool which not only modernises how tips are collected and distributed amongst staff, but one which also streamlines financial operations and ensures full compliance with new tipping regulations.
Whilst the immediate benefits are glaringly obvious, the knock-on effects of implementing a digital tipping solution are far reaching.
NATIONAL INSURANCE (NI) SAVINGS
By using a digital tipping system, tips are treated as gratuities directly from customers to staff, meaning the business doesn’t pay NI contributions on those amounts, leading to significant cost savings.
VAT EXEMPTION ON TIPS
Tips collected digitally ensures a clear separation from the business’ sales and are exempt from VAT – directly impacting profitability.
REDUCED PAYROLL BURDEN
As tips aren’t included in the business’ payroll, the administrative burden and costs related to processing tips through payroll are reduced.
INCREASED STAFF TAKE-HOME PAY
Since tips aren’t subject to the same deductions as wages, staff receive a larger portion of their tips, without the business having to raise wages directly.
IMPROVED FINANCIAL EFFICIENCY
By lowering NI contributions and avoiding VAT on tips, businesses can allocate those savings to other areas, improving overall financial health and operational flexibility.
SEAMLESS TIP COLLECTION
Effortlessly collect tips from customers through digital payments and eliminate handling cash, reducing the risk often associated with traditional cash tips – loss, theft and mismanagement.
BOOST STAFF MORALE
Fair, transparent and timely tip distributions means employees feel they are fairly compensated for their efforts making them more likely to stay. This improvement in staff retention translates into a more experienced and skilled workforce, benefiting overall service quality.
ENHANCED CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
Payment methods are simplified as customers can tip directly through the digital platform in one simple transaction. Offer a convenient, contactless way for customers to show appreciation, creating a better overall experience.
STREAMLINED TIP DISTRIBUTION
Automatically track and distribute tips to staff, save time and reducing errors in manual calculations.
IMPROVED FINANCIAL TRANSPARENCY
Track tipping trends with detailed reporting, allowing for better business insights and planning.
INCREASED REVENUE
By offering simple, digital tipping options, businesses can often see an increase in the number of tips collected overall.
COMPLIANCE WITH LEGISLATION
The TipJar platform ensures complete compliance with the Fair Tips Act – approved by HMRC, protecting you against potential disputes.
Integrating a digital tipping solution is simple, cost effective and stands to benefit businesses, employees and customers alike. As the industry continues to evolve, it is crucial that hospitality businesses leverage technology to meet the demands of the modern marketplace. Transform your tipping strategy, reimagine employee engagement and propel your business into a profitable, customer-centric future. n

PINK LADY APPLE AND MINCE PIES
This delicious take on Christmas mince-pies is brought to you by Esse in conjunction with cookery writer Carol Bowen Ball, who specialises in eating seasonally for health and longevity
With their apple and dried cranberry filling, these mince pies are more than impressive! Serve warm or cold with cream or custard.
Makes: 12 pies
Ingredients:
Pastry:
50g cold butter, diced
50g lard or solid vegetable oil, diced
175g plain flour
2 tbsp icing sugar
1 egg yolk
4 tbsp cold water
Filling:
200g mince meat
1 Pink Lady apple, cored and finely chopped
25g dried cranberries
Icing sugar, to dust
Method:
Preheat the oven if necessary to 200°C/Fan 180°C.
Put the butter and lard (or solid vegetable oil) into a food processor along with the flour, icing sugar, egg yolk and water and pulse until the mixture binds together.
Alternatively, use your fingertips to rub the butter and lard lightly through the flour and icing sugar, until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, then add the egg yolk and sufficient water to bind together. Turn the pastry onto a lightly floured surface, knead to a ball then roll out and stamp out 12 circles with a 7cm cutter. Line a bun tin with these and chill for 30 minutes. Reserve the pastry trimmings.
Meanwhile, mix the mincemeat with the apple and cranberries and spoon into the pastry cases. Stamp out 12 stars from the pastry trimmings and place one on the top of each pastry case.
Bake for 15-20 minutes until lightly golden and cooked. Serve warm or cold dusted with icing sugar.
Get ahead!
Baked mince pies will keep in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to three days. Ideally warm in the oven for five to eight minutes before serving. n

MEDITERRANEAN VIBE…
Tasty tapas was the order of the day at CDJ Riverside where delicious and elegant dishes are created by talented chef Dan Jolley. Tedd Walmsley visits this iconic new restaurant
The question I was asking myself on the 25-minute drive from Clitheroe –was is it worth leaving the Ribble Valley, famed for its foodie excellence to try something different in Lower Darwen? The answer became clear very quickly – a resounding yes!
Chef Dan Jolley has a very impressive CV. He started his career at our beloved Northcote and took his own culinary journey across Europe, working and learning his craft from some of the finest chefs along the way.
Let’s start but not dwell, as space is at a premium, on the CDJ Riverside building. Historic and considered by many as iconic, saved from decay by owners Mark and Michael, the transformation retains many of the original features and remains authentic, but the Mediterranean influences of the decor throughout the magnificent dining and bar areas truly stand out. The scene was set. Now
to ‘road test’ a selection of tapas that, in my opinion, is the real point of difference here.
As many of you know I’m a stickler for good service. The front of house team was welcoming and knowledgeable, which turned out to be very important when determining our choice of tapas in terms of quantity and options. Six was deemed to be
WAS IT WORTH THE DRIVE? ABSOLUTELY!
the number – it’s important to recognise that the dishes come off the pass when ready, so the following 90 minutes saw us presented with a steady stream of stunning dishes, lovingly presented in a relaxed and elegant style. Everything, including the crockery and utensils, complemented what turned out to be a lovely lunch.
The tapas menu is split into three, meat, vegetables and fish, so we chose wisely to illustrate the breadth of the offer. It was hard to pick a ‘stand out’ dish as they were all delicious but if pushed, the honey chicken with a piquant chilli, lime and Szechuan sauce was truly outstanding and coming a close second, was a perfectly cooked beef Wellington. If moreish pastry and delicious fillings are your thing then there’s a whole evening devoted to this – Wednesday is the
night for you at CDJ Riverside. Steaks and sides are the other great standouts on the menu and again, Thursday steak night looks great value – the website and social media will keep you updated with what’s on and when.
It’s so hard to convey in such limited space, just how good the food is here – I caught up at the end of service with chef Dan – his enthusiasm, passion and pride on what he’s achieved in just three months is palpable.
I’m keen to come back and explore other aspects of the menu, maybe sample a cocktail or two and try out the traditional Sunday lunch, or maybe a steak or perhaps a beef Wellington. Was it worth the drive? Absolutely! n
WINTERTIME: GOOD FOOD & WINE
With new additions on the lunch and supper menus, as we head towards December, the Freemasons at Wiswell has prepared a party menu that is sure to please, writes Kate Bowyer
November heralds the start of long, cold, dark winter nights, and in the months ahead country pubs like the Freemasons come into their own. Roaring log fires and a warm welcome awaits guests from both near and far, but what sets the Freemasons apart from the competition is the extraordinary awardwinning food, combined with the perfect atmosphere and country vibe.
Throughout November, the inclusive winter menu for both lunch and dinner create options for every appetite and budget. The ever-popular early supper and lunch menus have some delightful new additions and for those wanting to sample the essence of the team’s culinary style, the private dining tasting menu is a must. Carla Raads is a professional abstract seascape and landscape artist who channels the power and intensity of nature and emotion through her artwork.
Having grown up along the Eastern Cape coast of South Africa, Carla’s childhood was immersed in the captivating beauty of the beach and the untamed forces of the ocean. This deep connection with nature serves as the foundation for her evocative paintings. It seems fitting that Carla now resides in the beautiful coastal town of Lytham St Annes, where the familiarity of the sea helped Carla feel at home and sealed her lifelong love of the wildest elements of nature.
Carla’s first paintings were of dark, stormy, encroaching seas. Various seascapes and skyscapes followed over a period of seven years. Her captivating works have been exhibited in galleries and art shows internationally, attracting art enthusiasts and collectors alike.
MY LATEST BODY OF WORK REPRESENTS AN EVOLUTION IN MY ARTISTIC JOURNEY, SEAMLESSLY BLENDING TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES WITH CONTEMPORARY FLAIR
Last year was a big year for Carla. Following several successful collaborations with Porsche throughout 2023, she was named a ‘Driven by Dreams’ ambassador. The campaign’s ethos centred around celebrating the bold dreamers who fearlessly pursue their passions. There was more interest from international collectors when Carla did her first solo show in the UK, Sun and Soul: Sunset Recollections and she also
FUSION OF NATURE & ABSTRACTION
Originally from South Africa, artist Carla Raads has been taking the art world by storm. Ali Gudgeon catches up with her to talk about her latest work. Photography: Rob Cooper
collaborated with Jumeirah Hotels for their clifftop hotel in Sóller, Mallorca.
In the same year, Carla moved to a larger studio at Whitehills Business Park in Blackpool, a lovely corner studio which is flooded with natural light.
Carla explains: “My work is a balance between commissions and what I want to paint. Work naturally evolves and I found around the same time I moved into my new
studio, my style started to change.
“My latest body of work represents an evolution in my artistic journey, seamlessly blending traditional techniques with contemporary flair. This new series pushes the boundaries of landscape and floral art, inviting viewers to observe our relationship with nature in a new way.
“At the heart of this new approach is an innovative multi-media process. Each piece begins with an ink wash on canvas, laying a foundation that is both unpredictable and inspiring. Building upon this, I apply layers of oil paint, my signature medium, interweaving this with strategically placed spray paint elements. This fusion of techniques results in works that are unmistakably contemporary.
THE ULTIMATE GOAL WITH THIS NEW BODY OF WORK IS TO EVOKE A SENSE OF WONDER AND FOSTER A DEEPER CONNECTION BETWEEN VIEWER AND
ART
“I’ve always been fascinated by the interplay of different media. By introducing spray paint alongside my usual oils, I’m able to achieve a freshness and spontaneity that speaks to the organic nature of my subjects. I love it when colours unexpectedly merge or paint runs in unforeseen ways. It mirrors the unpredictability of nature itself.”
While florals and plant life feature prominently in this new series, Carla still considers these works as landscapes in essence. She explains: “Abstract elements reminiscent of skyscapes weave through the compositions, creating a sense of vast, dreamlike environments. The style is decidedly looser and more organic than my previous work, yet viewers can intuitively grasp the subject matter, hovering in a captivating space between recognition and imagination.”
In a significant departure from her earlier works, Carla has adopted a more subdued colour palette for this series. “The works are grounded in tonal and neutral hues, creating a sense of calm and introspection. However, each piece is energised by the strategic use of a single, vibrant colour, adding a dynamic focal point and emotional resonance.”
The ultimate goal with this new body of work is to evoke a sense of wonder and foster a deeper connection between viewer and art. “I want people to be initially struck by the beauty, but then be drawn in to
explore further. There are hidden elements – perhaps the suggestion of a figure – that reveal themselves over time.
“This layered approach to composition serves as a metaphor for our relationship with the natural world. We’re forever intertwined with nature. I hope these pieces remind viewers of that connection and perhaps see both the landscape and themselves in a new light.”
Carla has just released a print edition –limited edition prints are available from
this collection offering an accessible way to bring Carla’s artistry into your home or gift it to someone special. n

EIGHTEEN
Young singer songwriter Harris Rafferty has just launched his first single, which he hopes will be the start of an incredible musical journey
In the run up to Christmas there’s a new kid on the block on the local music scene.
Harris Rafferty, who has had a longstanding interest in songwriting, has just released his first single ‘Eighteen’, which has launched on major online platforms:
“I am super-excited to get this out!” says Harris, who has been performing throughout the region to much acclaim.
Living in the Ribble Valley, Harris and his family have always loved music: “My mum and dad are massive music fans.
“I’ve been brought up with music playing all the time at home – rock, pop, indie, just about everything!”
Becoming involved in musical theatre while he was still at school was a game-changer for Harris, who went for his first audition in Year 6 when he was just 10 years old: “I auditioned for Madagascar and got the lead
part. I enjoyed it so much, it was a blast!”
As part of Basics Junior Theatre School, Harris got involved in many hugely successful local shows including the King and I, Sister Act and his last show, the Adams Family:
“It was all such good fun,” he recalls.
In his early teens Harris started playing the guitar and he went on to star in a musical theatre cabaret evening, singing Dancing in the Dark: “I remember it so well. The feeling was amazing – I was euphoric. Up until then I had always put off gigging as you have to be confident – there’s nowhere to hide when there’s just you on stage.”
TO BE HONEST IT WAS TERRIFYING! YOU PUT YOUR HEART AND SOUL INTO A SONG
Having been coached in guitar by music teacher Jack Herbert, Harris was encouraged to take on various opportunities to support a number of bands and singers including Canadian singer Ché Aimee Dorval and local
reggae band Jeramiah Ferrari.
“Jack really gave me the knowledge and confidence,” says Harris, who went on to perform gigs on his own locally and further afield.
“I’ve built up a following locally and on social media,” he says. “My girlfriend Ava Grayce is also a singer and she has really helped with the social media side of things so I can promote myself.
“It’s a big thing to put yourself out there but up to now it’s all been really positive. I love what I do and I love the creativity –it’s an interesting journey and when I look back at what I’ve done it’s an indicator of how I am progressing with my music.”
Having been song writing for the past three years, Harris was inspired to write ‘Eighteen’ after performing ‘Seventeen Going Under’ by singer songwriter Sam Fender, while he was still at musical theatre school.
‘Not Nineteen Forever’ by the Courteeners also provided inspiration as he explains: “I love both those songs so I thought I would be the one to write about Eighteen – it just seemed to evolve very naturally. I fell in love with it and when I finished writing the song I sent it to Ava Grayce as she is my biggest critic. I was a little nervous, but she really liked it.
Having ambitions to produce his own music, Harris contacted Jack and together they
recorded a demo tape of ‘Eighteen’, which led to an introduction to music producer Matt Heap at Lancashire-based Suff Studio: “We went on to record ‘Eighteen’ in the studio over three days – there were a lot of people involved and there are lots of people to thank as they all offered support – they were amazing.”
The recording also features guitarist Dan Arnold, drummer Luke Hiron, Joe Reuss on trombone and Lucca Fairhurst on trumpet: “They all contributed and of course, my parents were really supportive.
WE WENT ON TO RECORD EIGHTEEN IN THE STUDIO OVER THREE DAYS –THERE WERE A LOT OF PEOPLE INVOLVED
“They have really encouraged me to follow my dreams – a lot of parents rein in their kids but my mum and dad have always supported me. They love music as much as I do and they totally understand.”
During the three days in the studio Harris was able to see producer Matt at work: “He did all the mixing – it’s a fine art. Without his skills the single wouldn’t sound so balanced and professional.”
It was decided to launch the single at the end of August after Harris had completed his
A levels at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School: “I needed time to process everything. You only have one chance at these things, so I decided to do one thing at a time.”
Switching his attention back to ‘Eighteen’, Harris used an online distributor to upload the single whilst also dealing with licencing and copyright details.
The single now features on all major online platforms including Apple, Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, Pandora and Deezer – with an enthusiastic comment from Harris, saying: “Here it is! Eighteen is out and I hope you’re gonna love it. This is my first of many singles.” He adds: “To be honest it was terrifying! You put your heart and soul into a song. I didn’t want to look at the numbers straight away –but when I did look I had 2k views and a good number of the people who had listened to the song, continued to like it.
“So overall I am really pleased – the reception has been incredible!”
Hoping that a record label will take interest, Harris who has many more songs lined-up for release, says: “We are making people aware of the single but luck plays a huge part when a record label wants to represent you.
“At the end of the day, I just love singing.” n

ANCIENT ART OF YAKISUGI
Woodturner, Paul Eastwood has become known for the beautiful, blackened vessels he creates using a lathe and a centuries-old Japanese method of burning wood
Second-generation woodturner Paul Eastwood makes stunning vessels that are created using an ancient Japanese technique.
His work uses a centuries-old wood preservation method called Yakisugi that involves burning wood at high temperature to creative a distinctive finish in terms of their unique shape and tactile nature.
Ribble Valley born Paul followed in the footsteps of his father when he began woodturning several years ago. He now has a workshop at his home in Waddington and has recently begun to sell his work through Mytham Atelier on Moor Lane in Clitheroe.
“Woodturning is very creative – it’s a real passion for me and it has been wonderful to learn the skill from my dad,” says Paul, who sources his wood locally.
While usually working in oak and Swedish hornbeam, his latest collection of vessels is made of ash from a tree that was brought down in a storm on an estate in Waddington and like all the wood he uses, it is unseasoned or ‘green’: “The ash was kindly gifted to me from a local landowner. All the wood I use tends to have fallen naturally or has been felled for safety reasons.
I RESEARCHED YAKISUGI EXTENSIVELY AND PUT MY OWN SPIN ON IT AND I HAVE BEEN REALLY HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS
“A lot of woodturners like to turn dry wood, but I like mine to warp when it dries out so all the vessels I make are totally unique in shape. I don’t want the bowls to be perfect.”
Starting out as simple logs that Paul has chopped with a chain saw, the vessels range in size from eight inches in diameter to 16 inches: “When the wood goes on to the lathe, I don’t know how it is going to turn out as every piece is different.
“It’s very much about what the wood requires me to do. When I start turning, it’s only then that I start to see different features – a knot or a crack. It’s then that I have to decide whether I want to keep it as a beautiful feature.”
Once turned, the wood is left to dry out for anything up to a couple of months: “The whole process of working with green wood is quite precarious. You only find out what’s in there when you start turning it – I would say there is probably a 60 per cent success rate and once you start drying it, the shape alters as it warps. It’s just a matter of letting the wood do its own thing.”
Once the vessels are dried out Paul employs the technique of Yakisugi, which the Japanese have used for centuries to clad buildings. The burning of the wood seals it making it weather and fire resistant and provides an interesting texture.
Using the same technique, Paul burns his turned wood vessels at high temperature, blackening them: “The heat burns away the softer part of the charred wood grain,” explains Paul, who uses a burnishing technique to brush away the soft part leaving the harder ridges of the grain.
WHEN THE WOOD GOES ON TO THE LATHE I DON’T KNOW HOW IT IS GOING TO TURN OUT AS EVERY PIECE IS DIFFERENT
The resulting blackened vessel has a distinct ridged pattern making it a totally unique work of art: “I researched Yakisugi extensively and put my own spin on it and I have been really happy with the results,” says Paul, who has taken on various commissions.
“I was thrilled when Jayne at Mytham Atelier was so enthusiastic about my work. She really understands that these are not just utility items, they are pieces of art. As a local craftsman, I think it’s fantastic that the vessels I make are featured at Mytham. Jayne’s support of local artists is growing and it has really inspired me to make more.
“Each one is totally unique and reflects the organic way that I work and how I let each vessel evolve.” n

NEW INTERIOR DESIGN
Rose Peploe, Head of Interior Design at Zara Moon Architects announces their new in-house interior design service
Good interior design should be simple, functional and beautiful. I love working with traditional timeless pieces, whilst introducing playfulness and expressing personality. Interiors should continue the same narrative as the architecture, working with the client to bring the vision to life.
I have spent the last 10 years honing my skills working across both commercial and residential sectors delivering museums, hotels, luxury homes, high end retail stores, bars and restaurants. My experience varies from heritage schemes through to new builds. To me, interior design is about the everyday, creating spaces to experience, live and socialise with an emphasis on human connection. Comfort and wellbeing are at the heart of our designs. Design should be honest and authentic with a complementary use of materials.
As a multi-disciplinary team, ZMA can cover all aspects of the design process ensuring the interior design is cohesive and reactive to other areas of a design and build project. Our interior design schemes are delivered through a phased approach in the same way as our architectural schemes.
The key to a successful scheme and a happy client, is understanding how you want to use a space, your specific requirements and needs. This allows us to translate your desires and requirements into your dream home.
STYLE DIRECTION
We start by listening and creating a story that can guide the creative process. Firstly, we work with the client to initially develop a style direction before moving onto 3D concept development. This involves visual research, precedents and Pinterest! So, this is the time to identify any features or styles you love.
WE ARE EXCITED TO ANNOUNCE A NEW CHAPTER FOR ZMA OFFERING AN IN-HOUSE INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICE. WITH A PASSION FOR REIMAGINING SPACES, BALANCING THE OLD AND NEW AND CREATING SPACES WHICH REFLECT THE ARCHITECTURE,ROSE’S STYLE AND DESIGN ETHOS PERFECTLY COMPLEMENTS OUR PROJECTS
Zara Moon
3D WALK-THROUGH & VISUALISATIONS
Designing and presenting in 3D ensures we are able to communicate clearly and allow our clients to work through any challenging areas of a design scheme at the concept phase, ensuring the process runs smoothly. We build the space in 3D, so you can experience and visualise walking through your building, with
furniture, lighting and even views!
SPECIFICATION & COSTINGS
We then develop the design and specification where the technical information and costings are produced. This is when we present different materials, textures and samples for you to select, while developing your budget for each space simultaneously.
CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS PACKAGE
Following the specification and costings, a construction drawings package is produced, including any built-in furniture, bespoke furniture, lighting design plans, wall and floor finish schedules – basically everything your contractor would need to make the design a reality.
DELIVERY
We then work directly with the contractor and subcontractors to deliver the designs on-site, guiding and advising throughout. We monitor quality, ensuring designs reflect your original brief.
We are here to guide our clients to craft spaces with longevity to meet their needs, grow with their families and stand the test of time. n
If you have a space which needs reimagining, get in touch and we will take it from there.
