Magazines
Going into 2023 it could be said it’s not the brightest of starts with soaring inflation, an energy crisis and strikes looming. But there are many positives – times like these often bring communities together and we see the very best in people who are willing to help others.
In this issue of Live Ribble Valley, we speak to the outgoing manager of Ribble Valley Food Bank. For the past year, Pete Simm has been co-ordinating the food bank with an army of willing volunteers, who supply provisions for those in need. While the Ribble Valley is renowned as being one of the most affluent areas in the region, there are still people who desperately need help, through no fault of their own. If you are able, please show your support by donating items of food – this is a vital lifeline for many.
Also in this issue, we welcome the leader of Ribble Valley Borough Council, Stephen Atkinson, who is determined to fight constituency boundary changes, proposed by the Boundary Commission for England. He also looks to the future and outlines how the Ribble Valley is set to benefit from huge investment.
In our Sports section David Fearnhead meets inspirational boxer Mickey Ellison and in our Food and Drink pages, we look to the past to re-discover a healthy super-food – bone broth. Ian and Emma at Gazegill Organics share their recipe and reveal that a leading Manchester City footballer is among their many customers, who are discovering the nutritional benefits of broth! Also delving into the past is Andrew Stachulski, who discovers the work of Edmundson Buck, who brought the Forest of Bowland to life through his historic photographs.
But for the time being, here at Live Ribble Valley, we have our sights firmly set on the future and the year ahead, so on behalf of the team, we wish all our readers a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2023!

The Perfect Kitchen & Living Area
When a family from Bolton decided to extend their home and create a large open plan kitchen and living area, they turned to David Walthall at Stuart Frazer to create the perfect space.
They’d been aware of Stuart Frazer for years, seeing their kitchens in glossy magazines and when they came to extend their home they visited two high-end kitchen retailers but chose Stuart Frazer based on the SieMatic product which they believed to be superior and the ideas designer David Walthall presented.
They were immediately impressed with David’s design skills and his painstaking attention to detail. Nothing was too much trouble for him and they were delighted when he also advised on other key elements of the extension, especially the feature windows which he turned from standard Velux windows to a striking column design.
These windows perfectly mirror the twin island design of the kitchen. With symmetry being key throughout, the couple who are keen cooks, chose Gaggenau appliances for their aesthetics and cooking capabilities. Clean line design was important and David delivered this whilst adding family friendly features such as the casual dining option with the breakfast bar.
For interior design and the living room furniture the family turned to Gail Marsden interior design.
A key part of the living area was a fabulous feature media wall which the couple saw in Stuart Frazer’s Manchester showroom. David designed this to incorporate a TV sound system and fire.
The end result is a stunning space that the family are delighted with, “we can’t recommend David or Stuart Frazer highly enough. They were absolutely fantastic. The finished space is incredible.”
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE
The purpose of the boundary review is to distribute Parliamentary constituencies and the number of electors, more evenly across the UK.
But the proposals have sparked fierce debate and met with strong criticism, not least from Ribble Valley Borough Council (RVBC) leader Stephen Atkinson, who revealed that Ribble Valley Council has submitted alternative proposals.
Valley to a new Parliamentary seat, so we are asking the Boundary Commission to bring wards in some of the towns and villages back.”
The current proposals would see wards such as Whalley and Painter Wood, Wiswell and Barrow, Salthill, St Mary’s, Sabden, Primrose, Littlemoor, Chatburn, East Whalley, Read and Simonstone and Edisford and Low Moor move into a new ‘Pendle and Clitheroe’ constituency while Preston Rural East and North, Samlesbury and Walton, Walton-le-Dale East and West and Bamber Bridge East and West would move into the Ribble Valley constituency.
Parliamentary constituency boundary changes that will see numerous Ribble Valley wards, including those in Clitheroe and Whalley, move into Pendle, are set to be implemented by the Boundary Commission for England.
“All through this we have fought to keep the Ribble Valley together,” he said. “The Chief Executive, with input from myself and the leader of the opposition have written to the Boundary Commission to express our concerns. We are losing half the Ribble
Speaking about the loss of Clitheroe to a newly created Pendle and Clitheroe parliamentary seat, the council leader said: “Clitheroe has over 14,000 electors so if it was to come back into the Ribble Valley seat it would be too large for the Boundary Commission’s criteria, but we could make an argument to bring back Whalley and Painter Wood and Chatburn. In order to do this, we would need to give Bamber Bridge
As we head into 2023 Ribble Valley Borough Council leader Stephen Atkinson vows to fight proposed constituency boundary changes and unveils his vision for the coming year
East back to South Ribble. We are confident that they will consider this, although we are now at the second and final stage.
“Having said that, the Boundary Commission’s original proposal kept Clitheroe with Barrow and Wiswell in the Ribble Valley and we have asked them to reconsider this option.”
Cllr Atkinson said it was important for people to remember that the Parliamentary constituency boundaries were not associated with Ribble Valley Borough Council boundaries, and that the council offices would remain in Clitheroe and day to day services would remain unaffected.
The final boundary recommendations will be announced in July 2023. If the current proposal goes ahead, Ribble Valley and Pendle and Clitheroe constituencies will be represented by two MPs: “Clitheroe will be in the new Pendle and Clitheroe constituency – but the irony is there is almost a mountain (Pendle Hill) in between. It’s ridiculous!”
“Traditionally the Ribble Valley within the
current system has been too small for two MPs – having just one really helps. Voting turnout tends to be much higher because voters feel much more connected with their representative so it’s much better – that’s how democracy works.”
He said the Boundary Commission proposals had created a certain amount of nervousness within the borough as it appeared the
Government was keen to adopt a one-tier local government system to create large unitary councils encompassing up to half a million people – something that has already been seen in North Yorkshire: “The area spans from Scarborough to Skipton – there’s no local democracy.
“We know that unitary councils work in cities but when you get into rural areas –and 80 per cent of Lancashire is rural –there’s no one to fight for the local community as unitary councils represent huge areas.
“While the proposal is not on the cards at the moment it’s our job to keep it off the table. Indeed, the last time it was proposed over 10,000 people signed a petition to keep the Ribble Valley independent and I made our position clear to Rishi Sunak who, at the time, was Local Government Minister.
“In the Ribble Valley we have shown that the two-tier model most definitely works in small rural communities. During the pandemic RVBC established community hubs and helped with the vaccination programme.
THE RIBBLE VALLEY IS A GREAT PLACE TO BE AND PEOPLE KNOW THAT, THEY ARE PROUD TO LIVE HERE
We distributed over £30m to help local businesses and households and we continue to help with Household Support Grants.”
As leader of RVBC, he said there was much optimism going into 2023: “I am extremely positive and I think we have done a great job in Ribble Valley.
“We have the lowest Council Tax in the north of England, we don’t charge for green bins – so the average Band D household in the Ribble Valley is £800 better off over the last four years. With the cost-of-living crisis households are finding it really hard, so we are conscious that that money must go to them not the council.
“At the same time, we deliver the best refuse service in Lancashire, we are the only council delivering weekly collections and we have a vibrant economy where in other boroughs, we see serious deprivation.”
He revealed that RVBC had recently paid off all debts and also had significant reserves: “From an economic point of view, we are the most prosperous area in Lancashire and we are now talking about a major programme of investment.”
He said RVBC should receive £1.97m from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) over a period of three years. The UKSPF distributes monies to areas that identify needs at local level. Another £400,000 has also been allocated for rural areas within the borough.
“Improving our public spaces improves the experience of our visitors and residents so we are looking at a number of schemes.
“We have had local consultations with
businesses and community organisations within the Ribble Valley and many have put ideas forward. The council will then have to decide what will happen, but we are not at that stage yet.”
Having come under criticism about the number of new homes built in the Ribble Valley, he said the Government had given councils a five-year housing target with an ultimatum that if the target wasn’t achieved, the council could lose control over its Local Housing Plan: “The reason so many houses have been built is to get some level of control. I can understand some people being upset but there is an upside and downside to this.
He said among the suggestions were the improvement of Clitheroe Market and the creation of an outdoor event space in Longridge. He also added that the council was mindful that Clitheroe’s swimming pool at Roefield faced challenges, having been built in 1974 and would eventually need to be replaced at a cost of many millions.
“It will come to the end of its life and at that stage we will look at alternative options as to whether to repair or build on the current location or otherwise.”
Speaking about the need to improve some of the footpaths in and around Clitheroe, he said he understood residents’ concerns: “They want investment, but they generally don’t care where the money comes from. The County Council may spend some money on improving footpaths – it is their asset and responsibility. But we will help where we can.”
“The upside is that house building has been one of the main drivers of the local economy. Alongside the expensive, four and five-bedroom properties built we have also seen the number of affordable properties increase by 500 in the last four years, which is incredible.
“People want to live in the Ribble Valley and they bring their disposable income here which is good, but it is also to the detriment of other towns, which is the downside. The Government really needs to think where this development needs to happen.”
Reflecting on 2022 and moving into the new year he concluded: “We are not perfect and we may not get everything right. We are a traditional Conservative council and we have done our best and the private sector has also delivered – for example Holmes Mill in Clitheroe, which is wonderful.
“The Ribble Valley is a great place to be and people know that, they are proud to live here.” n

A contemporary kitchen for a newly built farmhouse
Andrew and Amelia had the chance to build the perfect house and have their dream kitchen when they bought a house in Grimsargh, knocked it down and built a farmhouse in it’s place.
They visited Kitchen Design Centre in Blackburn after seeing one of their kitchens in a glossy magazine. They were immediately impressed with Showroom Manager Will Hustler and after showing him their architect’s plans, knew he could create the perfect space for them. He understood their vision and the contemporary look they were after.
They liked the fact that Will’s expertise saved them from making mistakes. The colours Will recommended work perfectly in the space. They felt reassured being able to select colours from such a wide range of samples in the showroom and they chose the breakfast bar and worktop after seeing it on display.
Initially they were anxious at the size of the room and didn’t want the kitchen to look lost. Will created a separate bar area which works perfectly and ties everything together and designed the island and tall units to dominate and command the space.
Andrew and Amelia are delighted with Kitchen Design Centre, from Will to the fitters who were fantastic and did an exceptional job. The kitchen has become the heart of their stunning home and has the ‘wow’ factor. It’s perfect for everyday family life and entertaining, “we can’t praise Will enough. He’s created our dream kitchen that fits perfectly within the farmhouse. From the start where we came armed with architect’s plans to the finish where Will came and taught us how to use all the appliances, everyone at Kitchen Design Centre has been exceptional.”
Designer Will Hustler says,
“This was a fabulous project to work on because I was involved at the very start, before the farmhouse had been built. The space allocated to the kitchen was fantastic but such a large space needed careful consideration. My design includes bold elements such as the large island. The inclusion of the separate drinks area really works and makes the space flow.”
IS WORKING FROM HOME IMPACTING YOUR WELLBEING?
With Google data showing that worldwide searches for the term ‘back pain’ are at an all-time high, we sat down with home office furniture brand Slouch to understand the benefits of ergonomic furniture for physical and mental wellbeing
The concept of comfortably working from home sounds idyllic to some, but it is no secret that without the correct set-up our mental and physical wellbeing can feel an impact.
Professional workplaces are designed to provide maximum comfort, their conditions are carefully considered and the furniture must meet specific industry standards.
As we have migrated away from the office and begun working from home (WFH) we have let standards slip, swapping ergonomic chairs for everyday comforts such as bar stools, kitchen chairs and sometimes even the sofa.
Matt Ousby, Director of Slouch explains: “There are three key factors that should be considered when designing any office. These are space, comfort and conditions that impact a worker’s wellbeing.”
Initially, working from home brought many positives, from flexibility to focus. Yet once it became the norm, our mindsets shifted and the temporary workspaces we resourcefully created, quickly became impractical for a permanent lifestyle.
Not only do unsuitable workspaces increase the chance of physical pain occurring, they also reduce our productivity. Aspects
such as lighting, organisation and comfort are the fundamentals of feeling motivated and fulfilled.
“The most important piece of furniture is the one you will probably use most – your desk chair. However, many people have overlooked the importance that support and comfort have on concentration,” adds Matt.
Unlike ordinary seating, ergonomic chairs

TRANSFORMING THE WAY YOU LIVE
Having replaced old conservatories with new structures, two delighted homeowners explain why they chose Whalley Home Improvements to carry out the work
Aretired Ribble Valley couple living in Wilpshire are thrilled with their newly built conservatory that has transformed the way they live.
Mike and Dot Millward moved into their 1930s detached bungalow eight years ago but were unhappy with the conservatory that had been built as an add-on between the garage and the house.
With a polycarbonate roof, it was not ideal as former Blackburn Museum curator Mike explains: “We put up with it for a while –in summer it was over 55 degrees and in winter it would get down to -10! So eventually we made the decision to replace it.”
After seeing an advertisement for Whalley Home Improvements, the couple made an appointment to talk to the company, which has forged a reputation for high quality workmanship on replacements windows, doors, extensions and particularly for orangeries and conservatories.
They met with Whalley Home Improvements co-founder Emma Hodgkinson who formerly worked for Ultraframe, gaining first-class product knowledge over many years.
“When we first went to see Emma, it was
at the time when builders were really hard to find. But the people at Whalley Home Improvements were very accommodating,” recalls Mike.
Having spoken to Emma, Mike and Dot decided to go for a newly-built conservatory with the same footprint as the previous one, with a five-metre wall of sliding doors
and featuring Ultraframe’s world-leading, solid Living Roof system replacing the old polycarbonate one.
“It has been a fantastic success,” agree Mike and Dot, who previously worked as a laboratory technician.
“Simply amazing! During the summer and autumn we spent all of our time in there as it overlooks the garden. While we used the room before, it is so much more ‘liveable’ in now.”
Speaking about the installation carried out by Emma and the Whalley Home Improvements’ craftsmen, Mike adds: “They were brilliant and so efficient.
“I can’t recommend Emma highly enough. All the tradespeople that carried out the work are really good at what they do. They were also pleasant and polite and always considerate.
“We had nothing at all to complain about. We had a very minor problem, it was miniscule, and when we called them about it, they were here within the hour to fix it –so, first class after-sales too!
“We are so happy with our new conservatory, what a transformation!”
Photography: Kirsten Platt Photography: Kirsten PlattAnother very happy customer, who lives in a 1930s three-bedroom, semi-detached house in Great Harwood, has been similarly delighted with her new conservatory.
The house, built of Accrington brick, previously had a conservatory extension off the kitchen and, like Mike and Dot’s original conservatory, it had a polycarbonate roof and was poorly insulated.
The homeowner wanted the conservatory to feel more like a ‘proper room’: “The conservatory was long and quite narrow,” she explains. “I have a lovely terrace at the back and wanted to be able to look out over that.”
Her first step was to discuss her aims with Emma: “I had a good idea of what I wanted to achieve. Emma was really efficient and came up with a great design. She is really knowledgeable about each and every product.”
The old conservatory was replaced with a well-insulated, new solid roof system, new windows and French doors were created so that the householder could walk out onto the terrace in the south-west facing garden that has fencing with lots of greenery: “I can now enjoy the afternoon sunshine in my new conservatory, which really is lovely.
“Whalley Home Improvements were so efficient and exceptionally considerate. I couldn’t really use my kitchen for three days, but they swiftly created my new conservatory with very little disruption.”
Speaking about the two similar conservatory projects, Emma says: “This dilemma is fairly typical. Many homeowners find that the temperature varies too much with the old-style polycarbonate roof –the latest Ultraframe roof system provides a perfect solution to this.
“We have a great team and customer service is at the heart of everything we do at Whalley Home Improvements.”
Award-winning Whalley Home Improvements was co-founded three years ago by Emma and partner Graham Fielden, of long-established joiners Frank Fielden and Son.
Working alongside leading manufacturers of doors, windows and roof systems, Whalley Home Improvements offers the best in window and door fitting, building construction and a full project management service.
With a skilled team of experienced builders, fitters, craftsmen and professionals, Whalley Home Improvements work with a number of highly respected products including Ultraframe’s globally renowned roof system as well as being a trusted installer for Rockdoor.
Fully CORGI Fenestration accredited for window and door installation, the company also works with the latest generation of Timberlook sash windows, which come with a 10-year warranty.
Working with a number of exclusive suppliers means the company can offer
doors and windows in UPVC, timber and aluminium in a wide range of beautiful heritage colours and styles.
As well as offering window and door installation, the team works on traditional and modern extensions and will oversee any project from conception to completion. n

TIME TO PLAN YOUR GARDEN
January is a great time to get organised in the garden and make plans for the year ahead
With the new year, you can start planning what plants you might like to add or seeds you might like to grow in spring and what materials you need to do this, plus what kind of budget you have.
Gardens can cost, so try to keep things simple and where possible reuse, recycle or come up with money saving ideas that can help you create the garden of your dreams regardless of resources or space.
So, thrifty tip for the month is to get your tools sorted before the gardening season gets into full swing. You don’t need masses of tools just a few good ones – the best you can afford –or keep an eye out for bargains in second hand shops making sure that the metal parts are in good shape. You will need a good spade (preferably with a wooden handle that comes up to your hip in height), a fork and a hoe. Plus, a pair of secateurs is essential, as is a watering can. If you have space a wheelbarrow is also handy. If you are container gardening then a hand trowel and fork are a must. The rest you can improvise – pencils for dibbers, yoghurt pots and plastic food trays for seeds
and cuttings, large plastic bottles for cloches. You can also make tools last longer by wiping them with a rag dabbed with oil after use. Being snow-aware in the garden can not only help with the longevity of equipment, it can also stop extensive plant damage which means you don’t have to spend money on repairs or replacements. Advice from the Royal Horticultural Society is to shake or brush heavy snow from conifers, shrubs and hedges to prevent branches breaking. When it comes to turf and borders a covering of snow provides insulation from the cold so it’s best left in place. You should avoid walking on frozen and snow-covered lawns as this damages the grass.
species because it self-seeds and spreads very quickly, which means you get to enjoy your snowy white display sooner rather than later.
Always buy pots of snowdrops ‘in the green’ –so when they have finished flowering but the leaves are still green and intact. Or you could lift and divide any large clumps from a different location or garden, which would give you a supply of snowdrops for free. Plant them out as soon as possible in partial shade and in moist but well-drained soil. You can add some compost or leaf mould to give added nutrients. Plant to the same depth around four inches/ 10cm and space clumps about six inches/15cm apart. Water them in and leave. n
One of the plants we love to see at this time of year is the perfectly formed snowdrop. Common snowdrops are hardy and fairly easy to grow with many beautiful species to choose from. If you’re hoping to create an impressive swathe in your garden then try Galanthus Nivalis. It’s the most common

MEET THE DESIGNER
Vicky Brown tells Meena McDonald how well-designed and expertly chosen flooring can totally transform our living and work spaces
Astrong passion for the flooring sector combined with a powerful sense of integrity is at the heart of what drives Vicky Brown at Gainsborough Flooring. From the tender age of 11 she’s been an integral part of the family business, absorbing and learning from the sidelines. Top of her list
has always been the customer and delivering flooring that delights and excites them.
Vicky says: “It is all about honesty and giving the customer what they want. My role is to inspire and stimulate each customer with the eclectic range of products we have. We listen very carefully to customers’ ideas and consider the creative design features
and style they are wanting to create, along with where the space is and the practicalities of how it is used.”
Customers aren’t just buying flooring. They’re creating a wow factor in their home that makes them feel passionate and proud.
Whether they’re making a powerful statement with a vivid and striking pattern or indeed neutralising the space with charming and subtle tones and hues, Vicky has the creativity to help customers discover flooring that reflects the personality of their home.
Most customers visit the inspirational showroom which has a superb range of stylish products for customers to browse. Vicky also shows them fabulous projects that have been recently completed so they can see what Gainsborough can create in their home. She believes you can’t beat real life examples: “Seeing someone’s home is so much more real and evokes much more enthusiasm and emotion in customers as they can see how the whole environment seamlessly comes together with the flooring complementing the other décor and furniture.”
Providing choices and suggesting alternatives is key to selecting the perfect flooring. One of Vicky’s favourite things is to throw in curve ball choices, often totally wacky ones. But with her intuitiveness, knowledge and creativity she suggests products she genuinely believes could work, and what’s always amazed her is the number of customers who go with the curve ball choice!
Working closely with interior designers and having a keen eye on social media platforms such as Instagram means Vicky is always on trend. Social media plays a major role in influencing customers who want to create the amazing styles they see, adding their own unique and personal touches to it.
The trend currently is more towards the practical Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVTs) throughout most of the downstairs with a touch of luxury carpet in the lounge. For the stairs and landing customers are generally opting for a hard-wearing carpet for durability, then invariably they want comfort underfoot, especially in the
bedrooms where they most like to feel their feet sink into a deep pile carpet.
Once customers have selected their choices, they’re encouraged to take them home and see how they look in situ, as varying lighting and different times of the day can have a huge impact on colours.
Customers are regularly amazed that what they liked in the showroom doesn’t create the desired look in their home.
The most rewarding commission Vicky had was a gentleman living with his elderly mum who openly admitted he had little idea, other than some colour preferences of berry colours and a hatred of flowers. Vicky was entrusted to choose the flooring for each room as long as it flowed throughout
the house. He absolutely loved the end result, even the daring tartan she laid in his main lounge!
The family business has been established over 50 years working across the country with the majority of customers based in the North West and Manchester. One road in Lytham has over 20 customers which is true testament to Gainsborough Flooring’s service. The team work very closely with interior designers, kitchen, bathroom and fireplace companies and new home builders to ensure a seamless installation between all trades to meet customers’ deadlines.
The team also take on a considerable number of commercial projects working with educational institutions, NHS services, the hospitality and retail sectors. One of the most obscure commercial commissions was to floor a play pirate ship for a local nursery. A rustic wood look was used for the ship’s decking then a bright blue in the shape of puddles to resemble water. The end result was fantastic! n
THE TEAM WORK VERY CLOSELY WITH INTERIOR DESIGNERS, KITCHEN, BATHROOM AND FIREPLACE COMPANIES AND NEW HOME BUILDERS
ONE OF VICKY’S FAVOURITE THINGS IS TO THROW IN CURVE BALL CHOICES, OFTEN TOTALLY WACKY ONES
from the bi-fold doors, they selected Tromso White Maple in herringbone.
For the stairs and landing Brockway Rare Breeds Loop, made from pure, undyed wool provided a luxurious look whilst providing a durable surface.
Liaising with other contractors was critical to the smooth running of the project.
Gordon was extremely impressed with the professionalism, flexibility and consideration shown by the Gainsborough team, fitting in with the family’s timescales rather than their own, as well as keeping them informed and involved.
CREATING THE
WOW FACTOR
Gordon and Liz Warnock recently completed major renovations to the home they’ve lived in for nearly 25 years.
With a sizeable kitchen extension, a striking new summer room, opening up the entrance hallway to their home, plus a new staircase, there was considerable scope for some truly exciting flooring choices.
Following some online research and discovering a feature on Gainsborough Flooring in a local glossy lifestyle magazine, they called into their showroom.
Both Gordon and Liz were astounded with what they were presented with. A vast product range, invaluable advice demonstrating the team’s knowledge and expertise to guide them to select the most appropriate flooring for the space, as well as their ability to understand and collaborate with other tradespeople to ensure a smooth and efficient installation.
The back of the house was extended to create a magnificent sociable space in their spacious
open plan kitchen and dining area. The couple selected Amtico Spacia Washed Salvaged Timber in a planked arrangement with a prominent grain.
Gordon and Liz were also extremely keen to create a feature by expanding their entrance hallway and the natural light and impressive space made Karndean Kaleidoscope KAL13 the perfect choice to create the amazing wow factor they were looking for.
Karndean Kaleidoscope explores a new world of unique patterns and shapes to create three-dimensional effects. Initially it confused the couple’s five-year old grandson, who thought he was stepping on an uneven floor!
The newly renovated summer room created a wonderfully peaceful space which was fully utilised during the summer and autumn. As Gordon commented: “It’s just so lovely and relaxing watching nature and chatting, rather than sitting in front of the television!”
To complement the walls and the natural light
Gordon concluded: “It has completely changed the way we live and we are absolutely delighted with what we’ve achieved. The family spends much more time together. The wow factor created by the hallway tops it off completely with friends unbelievably impressed with what we have created.”
So, what’s next on the list? Another sitting room and all the bedrooms which will need to be updated in the near future. There’s nothing holding back the creativity of Gordon and Liz! n

A recent project Timberlook manufactured for was for a Tudor-style property in Wrea Green. Part of a mock Tudor housing development – the house hadn’t had its windows replaced since the 90s.
The current homeowners were determined to breathe life into the house and began a year-long restoration to create the picture postcard property that sits there today. Before the renovation, the house featured dark, heavy and unmaintained wooden windows. These were replaced
A PEEK THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS INTO ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Replacing windows and doors is one of the best ways to modernise your home whilst improving its energy efficiency, writes Emma Brereton
It’s exciting planning a home renovation project but it can also feel daunting when faced with a plethora of products.
Affordable Windows Group (AWG) is one of the largest window manufacturers in the UK and has outlined several points that are essential to consider when choosing new windows and doors for your home.
“Do your research first so you have a good idea of the look you want to achieve,” explains Amelia Gaughan, sales administrator and marketing coordinator at AWG.
Amelia explains that the next step, and probably the most important, is to ensure you appoint a trusted installer and speak to them directly about your expectations for the project. The installer will outline the window and door ranges available and which would best complement the property.
“It’s also worth exploring the idea of a mixture of materials to really transform your home. For example, our Timberlook Flush Sash windows look fantastic alongside
a modern, state-of-the-art aluminium sliding or bi-folding doors along with super secure composite front doors,” Amelia added.
with the Timberlook range to avoid any compromise on the historical aesthetics of the house as well as improving the property’s thermal efficiency.
Amelia explains: “Our Timberlook range is available in many different options which allowed the homeowners to lose the busy leaded-look in exchange for a simple but stylish astragal bar design. This detail has also been reflected in the mock Tudor beams on the property and cleverly colour matched with our Painswick Green Timberlook windows.
“To complete the look, the homeowners decided upon a highly secure Solidor composite door. The homeowners’ vision, coupled with their choice of products, enabled this already show-stopping house to be elevated to the next level.” n
Energy efficiency should also be high on the agenda when considering new windows and doors. The BFRC (British Fenestration Rating Council) rate the thermal efficiency of windows (as a whole) from A to G, with A being the most efficient. To meet ‘Energy Saving Recommendation’ certification, the

CANDLE COLLABORATION
St Eval’s stunningly vibrant candle collection Love, Hope & Freedom, was created in collaboration with illustration students to raise funds for UK anti-slavery charity Unseen
The beautifully illustrated labels for these St Eval candles were designed by a talented third-year BA (Hons) Illustration student. The designs embody the nature-connected essence of St Eval candles and symbolise the important social messages in their themes.
St Eval are delighted that, through support from their customers and network of stockists, they were able to donate an incredible £6,251 to anti-slavery charity Unseen at the end of 2022. Furthermore, as this donation was sent during the ‘Big
Give’ campaign, this was then match funded to £12,502. This significant donation will support Unseen and help them continue their life-changing work.
St Eval sustainably craft candles, diffusers and body care with people and planet at their heart. B Corp Certified and based on their farm in Cornwall, their unique nature-inspired scents imbue the beautiful surroundings of coast and countryside.
Unseen is a UK anti-slavery charity which provides safe houses and support in the community for survivors of trafficking and modern slavery. St Eval’s Love, Hope & Freedom candles were inspired by the positive changes that Unseen brings to the lives of those affected by modern day slavery.
Jo Eades at Unseen says: “It was a real pleasure to work alongside St Eval on this project – from the initial inception, being involved in the design choice and supporting
the sales process. It has been lovely to show other supporters the actual candles to demonstrate the partnership we’ve had with St Eval.”
Creating an environment that enriches people’s lives and treading softly on the earth is the St Eval vision which began over 28 years ago.
The company continues to create new and exciting candles and fragrances, inspired by nature and following their core values –to protect, nurture and respect each other and the earth. As pioneers in quality, nature-inspired scents for wellbeing and safety, St Eval leads the way in driving high standards and sustainability for a brighter more balanced world, connecting with local communities and charities, sharing their vision and shining the light. n
AWARD-WINNING TRUSTED PROFESSIONALS
Having recently won a Northern Enterprise Award for the ‘Best Family Run Roofing and Building Company’, Lancashire Roofing and Building are fast becoming recognised as a leader in their trade, writes Gail Bailey
Lancashire Roofing and Building is a fully certified company serving the entire Lancashire area. Company Director George Clarkson says: “We are a family-run business with a reputation for high-quality work and an unrivalled personal service. With a qualified team who have over 20 years’ combined experience in the industry, we know what matters to our customers. We ensure to be competitive on pricing and deliver the highest standards of quality workmanship.”
The company offer all aspects of roofing and building services, their high standards are recognised not only by countless customer reviews but from a further accolade in the sector with Lancashire Roofing and Building holding the Confederation of Roofing Contractors accreditation: “We are extremely proud of this recognition, which demonstrates our reliable service and the high standards of our work. It means a lot to be acknowledged as highly reputable and trustworthy by our peers within the industry,” George adds.
The CORC certification provides customers with insurance-backed guarantees on all new roofs, delivering additional peace of mind.
George and his team recognise that the roof
is arguably the most important part of a house or building: “The roof is the guardian angel of a home, protecting everything beneath it,” says George. “Therefore, it deserves special treatment and attention to ensure it is robust and can safeguard the house for as long as possible.”
As one satisfied Ribble Valley customer says: “George and his team deserve the highest praise for their professionalism and skill. They have completed an excellent job and go above and beyond to provide a quality service. Would I recommend Lancashire Roofing and Building Ltd? Absolutely 100 per cent!”
The importance of a quality roof can never be underestimated when it comes to the value of a house too, as George explains: “The roof is one of the first things prospective buyers will see before entering a property. This means that not only does a new roof increase the value of a property, but also the kerb appeal. The roof can also accelerate the sale of a house as it improves the safety and structural integrity of the property.”
Interestingly, the installation of a new roof is not usually among the top-most ‘talkedabout’ restoration projects. However, it could
give a return on investment of up to 63 per cent – whereas improvements to a loft, kitchen or bathroom register a much lower return.
Lancashire Roofing and Building are expanding and currently recruiting: “We are a close-knit team – when you are working in a potentially dangerous environment it’s important each member of the team acts together as a strong unit and this underpins the culture of our company,” explains George. “That’s why we only employ the very best, highly skilled craftsmen who understand all aspects of every project they work on –and equally importantly, appreciate the time and effort that goes into producing a quality service.” n

It’s worth noting that all the photography here was shot in the Burning Desire showrooms, Ramsbottom. Well, actually all in the same building within five purpose-built showrooms and a newly converted first floor room dedicated to Britain’s most technologically advanced electric fires (more about those later).
Burning Desire Fireplace Centre, Ramsbottom has, for over 25 years, developed into purveyors of the top international fire brands from Chesneys to DRU, Charnwood to evonicfires –the best in fireplaces, gas and electric fires and real wood burning stoves. ‘Fashion changes but style endures’ – a quote by Coco Chanel that could easily have been said about fires – new trends in technology and interior decoration are constantly keeping the industry fresh. However, the best in British and international manufacturing carries with it timeless elegance. Burning Desire manage to bring it all together and provide a fire for everyone, whether traditional, contemporary or ultra-modern. Let’s take a tour around the showrooms:
THE DRU ROOM
‘Valued for their professionalism’ is how DRU say they select their approved stockists. Burning Desire have built a showroom specifically to showcase DRU gas fires. ‘Designed to be different’, DRU fires, from the Netherlands, have combined innovation with quality since 1754! Remote control of heat output and flame shaping combined with ultra-realistic log designs give you the modern gas fire experience.
THE NEW EVONICFIRES ROOM
Evonicfires is an award-winning brand from CK Fires Ltd, situated just outside Stratfordupon-Avon. They manufacture a range of British built, electric fires and are considered as one of the most technically advanced in the world. The new showroom at Burning

We know that open plan living can make rooms feel larger but experienced tile specialists Collins White help customers to take this one step further.
“Using an outdoor space to create an extension of the living room or kitchen is the perfect way to have a modern and sociable garden, that brings the feel of the outdoors inside,” says Carl John Collins.
“Creating a seamless flow from the inside to an outside space, by using the same tile design, links the two perfectly. With the exterior connected to the house your eye sees further and a garden-facing room appears larger.”
Complete outdoor redesigns continue to prove increasingly popular and when you get it right, you are more likely to spend your days with the doors open, enjoying lots of daylight and fresh air.
“Outdoor garden rooms and stunning new seating areas are leading ambitious landscaping projects,” Carl explains. “However, where wood decking or stone slabs were once the go-to material for these patio areas, porcelain tiles are increasing in popularity – and with good reason.
“Porcelain is unrivalled in its combination of style and strength along with adding a level of luxury and elegance to garden design never seen before. With styles emulating
marble and stone, wood and concrete and with a variety of colours to choose from, designers are gifted with invaluable versatility when drawing up how an outside living space might look.”

GET THE LOOK
Seeking a new look for the new year? One of the best ways to re-style your image is to let the experts at The Spectacle Factory advise you on the latest eyewear. Photography Robin Lyndon
When a person looks at you, the first thing they see is your eyes – so if you wear glasses they will be immediately struck as to whether they complement your face and your overall style.
“It’s really important that your glasses say something about you,” says Robert Sands, who manages The Spectacle Factory and travels the world seeking out the latest styles and eyewear technology. “Spectacles need to reflect your personality, just like your clothes and jewellery. Your eyewear is the first thing people notice.
“You get used to seeing yourself in a certain way so when you’ve had the same pair of glasses for a number of years you don’t tend to notice them. Most people tend to keep the same glasses for between two and four years. But it’s incredible what a difference a new pair can make to how you look and how you feel.”
While we all have our own individual style sometimes it’s good to try something different and at The Spectacle Factory they have years’ of experience in advising customers, as Robert explains: “If someone is replacing their glasses they do tend to opt for something similar to what they already have in terms of shape, materials and colour. But we can really change the way they see themselves by suggesting they try something completely different.
“At the moment there are some fabulous ‘out there’ frames that can really alter your
look – some clients are amazed when they try something new as they see how they can benefit from a re-style.”
If you feel you want to re-style your look for 2023, book an eye test and a free style consultation at The Spectacle Factory, where there are thousands of different frames that are handpicked for their originality.
“We can lead people out of their comfort zone and see what will really work for them,” says Robert, who recommends The Spectacle Factory’s Youtube channel, which has taken the brand worldwide.
“We give lots of tutorials so clients can see what works. Every day we see people who thank us for helping them choose something they would never have even considered. They are so glad that they made the right choice – we love it as it gives people so much confidence!
“A new pair of glasses can enhance the way we feel about ourselves – not just because we look great in them, but they also enable us to see the world better then ever! That’s what we aim for.”
The Spectacle Factory is renowned for its

Customers return to The Spectacle Factory time after time, many after glowing recommendations from friends and family about the fantastic service and amazing eyewear collections.
Discover frames from the likes of McLaren, Gucci, Boss and Cartier as well as strikingly creative spectacles sourced from independent designers such as Gast and Italian brand Portait, all made to the highest standards.
“We live in a world where people are now
embracing glasses more than ever before. Spectacles can really make a statement – you can go big and bold or minimalistic, metal or plastic or combine the two and one of the latest trends that has really taken off is lens tints.
“At The Spectacle Factory we have all different colours of tints, which is unusual as most lenses traditionally have a green shimmer.
“We can customise lenses to any colour which is fabulous as clients can create a
totally bespoke pair of glasses – they select their frames and a colour tint can really pull everything together. This is something that other opticians don’t often offer.
ONE OF THE LATEST TRENDS THAT HAS REALLY TAKEN OFF IS LENS TINTS. CLIENT SELECT THEIR FRAMES AND A COLOUR TINT CAN REALLY PULL EVERYTHING TOGETHER

The inability to leave the past in the past, coupled with the associated strong emotions, can be exhausting. It can affect your everyday life and hold you back from moving towards a happier and more positive future.
There are many instances when we cannot even remember the original incident that instilled the fear around a situation. Especially things that happened in childhood, when the emotional brain is less sophisticated and less able to rationalise situations.
What can you do?
The good news is that with the right support you can work through emotions that are linked to past events. You can understand and learn to accept and start to draw a line in the sand, leaving behind anything that doesn’t serve you well, or gets in the way of your happiness. You can transcend your past and transform your future. Not to do so, is not to live your best life. In doing so you learn to accept the past without regret and face the future without fears.
What can you do to start the healing process?
• Star t to journal daily your thoughts and feelings. Getting those thoughts and feelings out of your head and onto paper can be very cathartic
• Lear n what triggers you
• Ask yourself what your greatest fears are?
• Identify what helps and what doesn’t
• Speak to a tr usted friend
• Wr ite a gratitude diary, five things each day you are thankful for. This can help bring a perspective
Our past, whether we like it or not, is part of our lives. Therapeutic counsellor Lynn Scholes looks at how we can move on to a positive future
We wouldn’t be where we are today if it weren’t for what happened yesterday.
To some that brings a myriad of regrets, to others a multitude of things to be thankful for.
Why can’t I let go of the past?
In our lives many experiences are filed by the hippocampus (a part of the medial
When, in our past, we have experienced something that has caused us pain, anxiety, trauma or sadness, the emotional brain tries to protect us. It doesn’t file these into memory but remains on high alert for any similar situation, so that it can prepare you to protect yourself. Sadly, that patternmatching ability is very loose and so things happening today can very easily trigger negative memories from the past.
Typically, things that can affect us in this way are:
• Death • Divorce
• Loss of a job
• Relationship breakdowns
• Financial c hallenges
• Traumatic experiences
There is one thing for certain – not to take action is very unlikely to resolve things. You can invest your energy in ensuring that the past does not dictate the future. What tomorrow looks like is very much down to the action you take today. n

unlike many cheap quick-fix treatments that are promoted and too readily available.
The PlasmaPen is perfect for tightening and erasing sagging jowls, turkey necks, marionette lines, smile and smokers’ lines around the lips, crow’s feet, puffy eyes, drooping eyelids, chest lines and more, and Emma has achieved 100 per cent satisfaction with this treatment.
For those looking for a non-invasive volumiser for lips, smokers’ lines,
marionette lines, smile lines, frown lines and more, the Hyapen is unquestionably ideal for a natural looking alternative to invasive injectable fillers.
The PlasmaPen and Hyapen results normally last three years, however Emma says many clients who have had the treatment four years ago, still haven’t needed a top up. This is mainly due to clients following her individualised advice and education on how to take care of their skin.
Emma comments: “I spend a lot of time carrying out corrective work when mistakes have been made by inexperienced therapists. These mistakes often lead to awful reactions and outcomes.”
WHAT CLIENTS SAY…
Two weeks after having the Plasma Pen treatment with EMA I reached out to Emma and told her: ‘I just had to say to you that I love my face, so thrilled and full of confidence thanks to you.’ I’d recommend the PlasmaPen treatment to anyone with ageing concerns she works miracles.

Emma stresses: “The cheaper option is absolutely not the better option when it comes to your skin and your face. Many who opt for treatments based on price have regretted their decision when things have gone wrong or the expected results haven’t been achieved.”
At EMA Emma offers true value for money with results, service and overall experience, exceeding expectations and eliminating concerns. The focus of every treatment Emma carries out is to ensure clients remain looking like themselves, whilst achieving their sought-after anti-ageing results. n

PROFESSIONALISM, COMMITMENT AND QUALITY PAVE THE WAY FOR GYM EXPANSION
Following one of the toughest times, 2022 has been a stagnant year for most gyms with the cost-of-living crisis still looming. Fitness Plus is an exception to the rule and has been bustling with customers so much so, that capacity has now exceeded pre-Covid levels of 2019, writes Emma Brereton
Fitness Plus a long-established popular gym which features first-class equipment and some of the best personal trainers in Lancashire, is set to expand with plans that include a dedicated cardio suite. Its success is largely down to the gym’s unique business model and excellent leadership by owner, Will Smith.
“Since gym life has returned to normal, we have been able to focus on instilling our company values and growing a community feel at the gym so our members feel valued and cared for. I am so proud to own a gym that is of the highest quality from the equipment to our staff and our members.”
The discussions around expansion began when all members were asked to complete a questionnaire about what they would like to see in the gym. Will took on board the feedback and he is excited to see how the changes will improve member experience
and attract new members to join.
Will said: “The feedback we have received has been wonderful. It has always been my ambition to develop a business that promotes integrity and commitment. This expansion is part of our commitment to our members to demonstrate that we always endeavour to provide the best service possible. Our members feel like family and their opinions count.”
to ensure goals are achieved.
“I love our gym’s community and the direction the business is growing. We are professional and knowledgeable in everything we do, with personalised plans for our members so they can take complete ownership of their fitness to help keep them on track.
This community ideology is the basis of the ethos at Fitness Plus. It’s a space where everyone is welcome and whatever it is that a member wishes to achieve, there is support
E-books, portion guides and other digital assets are just some of the materials that are available to all of our members.”
To celebrate the expansion, Fitness Plus is offering the month of February free to those who join in January 2023. n

SKIN CONFIDENCE
Since my late 20s, I’ve looked after my skin, having regular facial treatments and using good quality products every day. Despite this, I had pigmentation and sun damage which were becoming more extensive and weren’t responding to my current beauty treatments or products. I was becoming more selfconscious about the appearance of my skin, especially as makeup didn’t really help either.
“I was encouraged by my regular beauty therapist to see someone else to explore whether there were treatments that could make a difference to my skin. Until I met Dr Montero at Discover Laser Medical Skin Clinic in Burnley, I hadn’t realised other options might even be available.
“I had several appointments with the clinic therapists and Dr Montero, where my skin was thoroughly assessed and photographed, and different treatment options were discussed and explained to me.”
“I had reservations about how painful the actual treatment would be and how long the downtime would be. But by the time I came to have treatment, whilst I wasn’t looking forward to the procedure itself, I was definitely confident I was in the right place with the right clinician and had no questions unanswered. The downtime estimates and aftercare processes were exactly as predicted.
“My skin post-treatment is better than I could ever have hoped! It improved in the immediate months following the procedure, and continues to get better.
“So many people have commented on how ‘well’ I look without really knowing why. I can use less makeup, and it sits so

“Everyone at Discover Laser is knowledgeable and friendly and can’t do enough to help you. The clinic is clean, calm and welcoming, and you continue to receive follow-up care and regular reviews after your treatment. It’s also possible to continue to go to the clinic for regular treatments to help maintain your new skin too!
“I hadn’t realised, until I did my research, and had my treatment, just how lucky we are to have access to the correct laser equipment and the skills of Dr Montero here on our doorstep in Lancashire - there are very few of these options outside London.
“For anyone considering having treatment, just book an appointment with Dr Montero to discuss potential treatment options, especially if you are unsure. He explains things in an easy-to-understand, nonpressured way which will help you make the right choice - at all times, he is calm, extremely knowledgeable and approachable.”
UltraPulse isn’t like a traditional CO 2 laser, which removes all the skin and results in a lot of downtime and potential scarring - some skin is left untouched, which massively speeds up the healing process.

ENHANCE YOUR SMILE…
Georgie Dobson had been concerned about her smile for many years. Having naturally very small teeth, her teethto-gum ratio was imbalanced and previous treatment involving composite bonding, had deteriorated over time and left her teeth discoloured.
As an online content creator working in the world of marketing, Georgie was conscious that a lovely, aesthetically-pleasing smile was vital to her confidence and her work.
Living in central Manchester and working in a busy city, she was surrounded by some of the best cosmetic dental clinics in the UK.
Having been unhappy with her teeth for a long time, Georgie Dobson recently underwent cosmetic treatment with Renovo Dental – and now she just can’t stop smiling!
During her research, she felt the various smile results all looked the same – big, bright, white teeth created as part of a full smile makeover.
“There was nothing unique about the smile results,” recalls Georgie. “I wanted a naturallooking, long-lasting solution to enhance my smile.”
When speaking to colleagues and friends in the industry, one clinic name kept cropping up – Ribble Valley-based Renovo Dental.
Georgie recalls: “The reviews for Renovo kept popping up and eventually I decided to book a consultation. I had always been very reluctant to smile, which wasn’t great as I am constantly being photographed in the work I do.”
Georgie had feared that any cosmetic dentistry may involve significant tooth reduction, but Dr Usman Riaz of Renovo was able to reassure her from the outset: “Georgie was looking to restore her smile. When she came for her first consultation, I reassured her that far from

removing any teeth, we needed to rebuild her smile by adding volume to a few selected areas, which was a different concept altogether.”
During her first consultation Georgie and Usman discussed a bespoke treatment plan that involved gum contouring, professional whitening, direct composite bonding and life-like ultra-natural porcelain veneers. Using the latest digital imaging technology, Georgie was able to see how her new smile would look before treatment even began.

Renovo Dental have transformed my smile this year!”
The team at Renovo are equally delighted that Georgie is thrilled with her new smile as Usman says: “Georgie had always assumed nothing could be done to fix her teeth and enhance her smile, but her confidence in the treatment stayed on track with each visit.
Georgie says: “The result is incredible. This has changed my face completely. I am so pleased with how the work on my teeth and the whitening has transformed my smile.
“My confidence has been boosted and I am so impressed and so happy.”
“Usman showed me a digital image of what my teeth could look like, which was amazing,” says Georgie, who decided to go ahead with the treatment plan in order to achieve the smile of her dreams.
As a member of Renovo’s in-house team, leading UK specialist periodontist Dr Khurrum Hussain undertook the gum contouring treatment to balance the vital ‘white-to-pink’ ratio of Georgie’s teeth and gums.
“Gum contouring is a fairly simple procedure with very little discomfort or side effects,” says Usman. “After a few weeks healing to allow the gums to restabilise, the final phase of Georgie’s restoration treatment began.”
Georgie returned to Renovo to have her teeth prepared for a combination of direct composite bonding and wafer-thin covers of ceramic that go over the teeth. The aim was to mask any imperfections such as the teeth colour, shape or even position, as Usman explains: “If designed properly, these

LOOKING FRESH FOR A NEW YEAR
Dr Grant says: “The most important issue to address in people who are in their 40s and beyond is the sagging of their facial features.
When choosing a clinic for your aesthetic treatments, it’s vital that you look closely at the qualifications and reputation of your practitioner.
Dr Grant McKeating has worked as a hospital consultant for nearly 23 years, and in aesthetic medicine for 10 of those. You can trust him to deliver a safe and expert treatment.
Firstly, you’ll have 30 minutes set aside with Dr Grant in RejuvaMed’s Clitheroe or Chorley clinic for a full consultation to discuss your concerns in detail. He will then recommend and discuss suitable treatments for you.
“As you age you lose fat and bone, and treatments that give lift and restore volume are the most important. Careful use of dermal fillers in a full-face rejuvenation, or the use of new technology such as Morpheus8, can subtly transform your appearance. Make sure you see someone medically qualified in an established clinic, who doesn’t just visit a local salon once a month. Good aftercare is vital.”
Dr Grant offers wrinkle relaxing treatments, non-surgical facelifts and treatment of facial thread veins (see images) amongst other anti-ageing therapies. n

BANISH VARICOSE VEINS
Delivered by consultant vascular surgeons Mr Vittorio Perricone and Mr Rob Salaman, RejuvaMed offers the only dedicated varicose vein treatment centre in Lancashire. With a nationwide reputation for quality care and exceptional results, the centre is now established as the leading provider of varicose vein treatment in the North West at prices way below Lancashire’s private hospitals.
Mr Perricone and Mr Salaman have both worked within the NHS and privately for more than 25 years, and they now consult privately solely at RejuvaMed.
As Dr Grant McKeating, RejuvaMed’s
Medical Director explains, the centre offers a real alternative to the NHS: “Funding for treatment for varicose veins has been rationed by the NHS, meaning patients often have to pay for their procedure. Where NHS treatment is available, waiting lists are incredibly long. We offer appointments within a couple of weeks and safe, relatively painless treatments with excellent results and minimal recovery time.”
As well as offering radiofrequency (RF) ablation treatment for varicose veins, RejuvaMed offers the innovative VenaSealTM procedure, which uses medical adhesive rather than a heat source to seal the diseased vein.
Normally priced at over £3,000 in other clinics and hospitals, RejuvaMed’s price is £2410 for one leg and £2725 for both. n

GOING FOR GOLD!
The amazing Fylde Coast Rhythmic Gymnastics Junior Group are hoping to raise £3,000 in a bid to help them compete overseas, writes keen supporter Catherine Podevyn
Every week of the year, thousands of young people with a passion for their sport are transported around the country by their parents for training or competitions. Apart from their own dedication and hard work, it is the sacrifice of an army of willing volunteers and coaches supporting them that is vital to propel them to future success in their chosen sport.
One such local group hoping to compete internationally is the Fylde Coast Rhythmic Gymnastics Junior Group comprising 14-year-old Evie Bayes, Tallulah Crabtree, 13, Lucy Taylor, 13, Chloe Magee, 13, Alex Marshall, 13 and Lottie Cahill, 13. Four of the gymnasts, Lucy, Evie, Chloe and Tallulah, earned English and British Championship titles earlier this year. As a team, they are a formidable force.
As with many other sports, rhythmic gymnastics does not receive any funding. It’s one of those chicken and egg situations –without success and medals, there are no grants, but it costs money to achieve success. These girls train together at least four times a week for up to 20 hours. To chase their dream, they jump on trains and have long
car journeys straight from school but never complain. It’s a story that’s played out all over the country by thousands of young people devoted to their sports.
train so well together and are the best of friends, always supporting each other as part of the team. They have been trialling for the GBR Performance Pathway Programme and are awaiting the results and hoping to be selected for the Junior GB Group Squad for 2023. It would be a dream come true for them to perform their routines at international level overseas in countries like Estonia and Romania. These girls really are a credit to the club (Fylde Coast Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy) and to their coach Ana Blackburn who recently won Coach of the Year at the Fylde Council Sports Awards.”
Speaking for the girls, Angela Taylor and Leanne Bayes said: “The girls’ dedication and commitment is truly inspiring. They
Someone who knows just what it takes to succeed is Gabby Logan, who recently featured on TV in a video clip when she competed at national level, long before she became a famous BBC sports commentator. This sport is not for the faint-hearted.
Having seen these girls live in action myself, I am in total awe. It has completely dispelled my image of ribbon twirling dance routines, such is their unbelievable gymnastic ability, perfectly coordinated ball skills, all performed with such easy balletic grace. n
Hoping to raise £3,000 to compete overseas, the group needs help with travel, kit and competition fees so have recently launched a GoFundMe page accessible by searching for Fylde Coast Junior Group. For more information about the club please see Facebook: en-gb.facebook.com/FCRGA

LOVING THE SKIN YOU’RE IN...
For most women approaching midlife and dealing with the menopause, loss of skin tone, texture and luminosity are side effects that are often difficult to come to terms with
For those of us who are unwilling to embrace wrinkle smoothing injections and fillers, it can be hard to know how best to help our skin to restore and improve that all elusive radiance as we age.
There are many brilliant skin care regimes which have the added benefit of being organic and vegan (Dr. Hauschka and Nourish) and which do a fabulous job for the surface of your skin. A healthy diet is also a must –but what about the complex world of supplements? How do you navigate it and, do they really work?
Thankfully, specialists have been researching exactly this area for many years, and believe they have the answer.
INTRODUCING COLLAGEN
Collagen supplements are being hailed as the new skin saviours. To better explain, let’s answer a few questions:
WHAT IS COLLAGEN?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It gives structure to our skin (skin is made up of 75 per cent collagen and gives skin its strength and elasticity), bones, muscles and other connective tissue.
Collagen production starts to slow down at around 25, and by the age of 45, levels have fallen by as much as 30 per cent –which is when you really start to notice.
Add to the mix the onset of menopause and lowering oestrogen levels, and you have the perfect storm. As a result, skin looks thinner, with a loss of tone and firmness –and more visible lines and wrinkles. But the visible effects aren’t the only area of concern as collagen is the glue that holds your ligaments, joints and bones together.
(the process of collagen formation is heavily dependent on vitamin C), zinc and copper to boost your levels of peptide-rich amino acids. (Not advisable for those with fish or shellfish allergies.)
An anti-ageing cocktail that gradually, but dramatically, improves the appearance of skin tone and texture by helping to:
• Reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles and ‘crow’s feet’
• Make skin appear younger with added radiance
• Increase skin firmness and hydration
• Improve elasticity of the skin
WHAT ARE COLLAGEN SHOTS?
Rejuvenated Collagen Shots are clinically formulated powders which you mix with water to create a drink.
Intensive research has clinically proven that taking collagen orally bolsters collagen levels, which in turn restores skin’s tone, pliability and thickness, counteracting sagging, dehydration, crêpiness (lovely!) and wrinkling. A study in the Natural Medicine Journal showed that women who took collagen saw significant improvement in skin texture after six months. The gold standard is bioavailable hydrolysed marine collagen.
HOW TO USE
For maximum benefits take a Collagen Shot daily, ideally half an hour before bedtime which is when cells are renewing. Alternatively have on an empty stomach either first thing in the morning or before a meal. To taste, it is rather pleasant and has a delicate berry flavour.
INGREDIENTS
Each shot contains 10,000mgs of hydrolysed marine collagen, hyaluronic acid, acai berry super antioxidant, vitamins B3, B5, B6, C
• Reduce skin dryness
• Increase skin smoothness
Collagen Shots are suitable for diabetics, 100 per cent natural ingredients, gluten-free, lactose-free and contain hyaluronic-acid. What’s NOT to like! n

Helen Coates and her experienced team know that each client is individual therefore all treatments are tailored to each customer.
With 25 years’ experience, Helen provides an extensive range of treatments from microblading and semi-permanent make-up to the latest skin treatments.
Helen explains why microblading is such a popular treatment: “Microblading is a semipermanent treatment that gently introduces pigment into the upper dermis to create tiny hair strokes that mimic the natural hair of the brow.
FRESH NEW LOOK
With many years in the industry Helen Coates Aesthetics aims to provide first class treatments including microblading, ombre brows and semi-permanent make-up
inserted into the skin much like a traditional tattoo for longer lasting results. It can be used on clients with most skin types, is ideal for people who want a more shaded, softer brow. Helen’s clients also have the option of the combination brow, as she explains: “For those who can’t decide between microblading and ombre, this may be the preferred choice.
It’s a combination between the two, hair strokes and powder fill for a really natural defined brow. No two clients will have
as they age that their lips can appear smaller and paler, they lose volume and elasticity and that all important outer edge definition.
Lipstick doesn’t last and bleeds into the skin.
“Carried out professionally, it involves using a disposable hand tool with super fine needles. This treatment can be used to enhance faint eyebrows or to create a perfect fuller brow.” All customers have an initial consultation to advise on the best brow look and a refresh is only needed every 12-18 months, which is the main reason many women love this treatment!
Helen also explains the ombre technique, which is also known as micropigmentation or permanent make-up: “It’s become really popular and involves building a beautiful brow by the pixelation of tiny dots. The pigment is
the same brow shape and definition, but the combination technique is ideal whatever brows you currently have subject to consultation.”
Helen is an expert in the application of permanent make-up and has seen a rise in clients wanting to have semi-permanent eyeliner and lipliner but the new kid on the block is definitely the introduction of permanent lip blush: “Many women notice
We can apply pigment to create definition, shape and even the appearance of fullness. You can opt for soft and natural tones although we do have clients who choose more dramatic lip blush colours. The pigment can last up to four years and offers a more youthful, fresh appearance during that time.” n

HEAR ALL ABOUT THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY…
Going into the new year, get the most out of life with clear, defined hearing. Specialist Nish Vasant talks us through the latest technology.
Photography: Roger MooreNew technology is being developed all the time and at Fresh Hearing, expert Nish Vasant is always researching to find the best solutions for his patients.
As we start 2023, one of the best hearing solutions to be developed comes from leading manufacturer Oticon which uses a type of advanced artificial intelligence which mimics the way the brain works.
“The reason why we believe Oticon is the best is that it supports what we call BrainHearing™ technology,” explains Nish.
“It’s a very different ethos to other hearing aids. Essentially the process encourages the brain to do the work.”
Oticon has produced the world’s first hearing aid to give the brain a full sound perspective with an onboard Deep Neural Network (DNN). This ground-breaking technology has been trained with 12 million
real-life sounds that it has learnt to recognise in detail.
The result is a clear and balanced sound landscape – so you get more from every situation whether that’s a busy café, listening to music or even a conversation through a facemask.
• You can be more easily aware of the other things happening around you, like people calling for your attention or birds singing
• You can get clearer sound much more quickly each time the sound environment changes
“At Fresh Hearing we are really impressed with Oticon. The technology is wonderful and we have had some fantastic results and feedback from our clients,” adds Nish.
Oticon surveys have shown:
• You can hear people you are looking at well, helping you follow conversations
• You can hear other people speaking around you far more easily – so you don’t have to turn your head and can naturally move between different conversations
Coming in eight attractive colours, Oticon hearing aids are among the most discreet on the market. The Invisible-in-Canal (IIC) style also makes them the perfect choice if you’re looking to enjoy the benefits of better hearing without wearing a visible aid.
Offering the very best custom hearing aids made to fit your ear shape as well as your lifestyle, Oticon hearing aids can be connected to a range of wireless devices and accessories as well as your smartphone to make everyday tasks easier, including streaming sound from your TV, smartphone, music player and PC just like wireless headphones. n

THE LEGACY OF EDMUNDSON BUCK
A cooper who became a renowned photographer, Edmundson Buck brought the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland to life through his images. Andrew Stachulski delves into the past to find out more
We all have cause to muse, from time to time, on what would have happened if, ‘the road we did not take,’ as the poet Robert Frost put it. Yet in some cases, we only know of someone because he or she did decide on a dramatic change of direction. That is certainly true of Edmundson Buck, who rose from obscure origins to become
a great photographer and chronicler of our district, especially the Ribble and Hodder valleys. His final output was indeed prolific –a collection of 800 slides, formerly held at Clitheroe Library but now deposited in Lancashire Archives in Preston. Apart from the slides there were very many picture postcards, which I suspect a number of the older generation still possess today.
His dates are generally given as 1859-1941, though his exact date of birth is apparently uncertain. Very little is known about his father, although he was indeed mentioned on Edmundson’s marriage certificate of 1880.
EDMUNDSON BUCK LEFT A PHOTOGRAPHIC LEGACY WHICH BRINGS THE RIBBLE VALLEY AND FOREST OF BOWLAND ALIVE
He grew up with his mother at Roughlee in Pendle, and by the time of his marriage he was working as a cooper and living at Foulridge. The dramatic change came when the family,
now including two sons, moved to Clitheroe in the 1890s, and from 1901 Edmundson was living in Waddington Street where he remained for the rest of his life. Though he was still a cooper at first, by 1905 he was listed as a self-employed photographer. What led to this change is unknown. It must have become a true passion in those days, when there were none of the modern cameras and photographic techniques available today. Undoubtedly the proximity and beauty of the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland impressed him deeply.
Edmundson did not simply assimilate the slides as his own collection, he used them actively to promote knowledge and appreciation of our area throughout East Lancashire through many visits and illustrated talks. He truly appreciated the beauty which we often take for granted.
‘The Beautiful River Hodder from End to End’ was one title – thoroughly merited. His interests were wide-ranging, not only scenic. He captured snapshots of social history and interesting people and places too. There is for example a fine ‘take’ of the old ferry crossing on the Ribble at Dinckley, and interior shots of Bolton Hall, demolished in 1959, including the dining room and the room where King Henry VI was said to have sojourned. Another shot records the 250th anniversary of the independent chapel at Wymondhouses,
on the lower slopes of Pendle. Buck also lived through the construction of Stocks Reservoir and the flooding of Dalehead, and a number of his photos of the abandoned village, church and outlying farms now have considerable poignancy.
the quality of his work in the Lancashire. Evening Telegraph. Barry was planning a biography of Buck, but unfortunately died before he could complete this worthy project. His article bore fruit in another way, however, as it was spotted by Buck’s Canadian descendants, who had lost touch with that branch of the family. When they later visited Clitheroe, John Barry was able to give them a show based on Edmundson’s slides and they paid their respects at his grave. One hopes that another enthusiast may arise to take up what would be a most worthy biographic subject.
A perusal of Buck’s original notes, many of which are held in an excellent archive in Clitheroe Library, reveals a remarkable eye for detail and the depth of his research. His absorption with his subject matter was truly scholarly, yet always presented with a light, entertaining touch as people and places come alive as we read. Sometimes, indeed, he appears to query accepted opinion, as for instance in his notes about the origin of the River Ribble. He considers the source to lie on Wold Fell, whereas Malcolm Greenhalgh in his book on the Ribble states definitively that a spring on Gayle Moor, lying further east, is the true source.
In the 1990s John Barry, a Blackburn photographer, discovered Buck’s collection for himself and wrote enthusiastically about
It’s always a fair question – what would we like to be remembered for? In Edmundson Buck’s case, there is no doubt. He left a photographic legacy which brings the Ribble Valley and Forest of Bowland alive to the viewer better than any geography or history lesson could, for which we should be truly grateful. n

As the world changes, so do family structures. The most traditional set-up is a husband and wife having children together, sharing matrimonial assets and having joint parental responsibility for the children. In the event of a relationship breakdown, they would file for divorce, relying upon the Matrimonial Causes Act to divide their assets and to share the child arrangements. If an agreement could not be reached to share child arrangements, either parent would be able to make an application to court and neither would need permission to make such application.
However, we are now seeing an increase of blended families where two separated families come together and form a new blended family with step-parents and step-children. Stepparents take on the role wholeheartedly, but often do so without formal parental responsibility. In day-to-day life this may
FAMILIES COME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES
Whatever your family structure, arrangements concerning children, finance and property can get complicated if a relationship breaks down. If you are experiencing difficulties it’s always best to consult an expert, advises Rubina Vohra, Family Partner at Forbes
not be an obstacle, however when it comes to providing consent in either a school or medical arena, this can often lead to obstacles requiring only the biological parent or parent with parental responsibility being able to provide that level of consent. Step-parents can often become very emotionally attached to children, quite often raising children for many years as their own and if those relationships were to break down, the legal implication is somewhat different. It is not always possible to make an application to court for arrangements for the children – the parent without parental responsibility will need to seek permission to pursue that application.
WORKING TOWARDS AN AGREEMENT WITH YOUR FORMER PARTNER AND HAVING A FIRM COMMITMENT TO AVOID LITIGATION CAN SAVE YOU BOTH COSTS
There is also an increase in same sex couples conceiving children through fertility clinics. The advantage to using a clinic is that this is done following protocols and also providing advice on how the parents can have their names on the birth certificate, thereby providing them with parental responsibility. Where fertility clinics are not used, families are created
but not necessarily providing equal parental responsibility to both individuals who believe themselves to be parents. Whilst those couples may have found a route around a hurdle to become parents, it does not necessarily provide them with the legal standpoint, leaving one parent without any parental responsibility or rights, should the relationship break down.
Finally, for many couples that decide not to get married at all and choose a cohabiting relationship, there has always been a myth of the common-law spouse, but that myth is just that. Cohabiting couples do not have the benefit of the Matrimonial Causes Act and unless the name of the father is placed on the birth certificate, then he does not automatically have parental responsibility. This also leads to difficulties where parties share houses together and perhaps contribute unequally to the upkeep and the mortgage. Sadly, this means that the law that protects them is not family friendly and is the more commercial route under the Trusts of Land and Appointment of Trustees Act. n

As hot chocolate was made and Christmas lights twinkled, Chipping Pony Club members, parents and instructors have been keeping busy, writes Megan Conlan
Chipping Pony Club had a fab team in the Winter League Show Jumping which came fifth out of 21 teams! The Winter League consists of a series of competitions in disciplines such as show jumping and dressage, where members of all ages and abilities compete to qualify for the National Spring Festival. These competitions allow members to continue putting their training to good use in the colder months, as well as keeping up the horses’ fitness and the members’ competitive spirit!
Members also had the opportunity to gain important skills from trained UKCC Level 3 British dressage judge Barbara Ainsworth, in
a Dressage Test Preparation Workshop. This was a great opportunity for members to learn what dressage judges look for and how to gain points, in time for the upcoming dressage Winter League competitions.
Training Clinic with Blackburn and District Branch of the Pony Club. A great time was had by all and by the end members were able to demonstrate their real knack for the fast-paced technique which this discipline requires.
Chipping held their annual wreath-making workshop fundraiser last month. Guided by PC mum and committee member, Sarah Fishwick, people who attended were given all the materials they needed and got to work. Every person had a lovely time creating their own wreaths and adding their own personal touches, as well as having a good natter!
Members braved the weather for a cross country training session at Somerford Park, Cheshire, where members could revitalise what they learnt over summer at the annual camp and other cross-country lessons. Under the watchful eye of David Llewellyn, members made excellent progress using the incredible facilities that Somerford has to offer, with a huge variety of fences to work with.
To add another discipline to the list, members also had a Mounted Games
Next on the calendar is Chipping Pony Club’s annual Awards Evening, where members are rewarded for all their hard work over the year, with trophies for each discipline as well as ones for tack and turnout (all the boot shining is worth it) and improvement over the year. The Christmas rally ended events for 2022. With a rather sparkly twist, members dressed up themselves and their horses (if they’ll allow) in the most fabulous, Christmassy outfits they could muster! Looking to the future, 2023 will bring lots more training, fun and competitions and not forgetting the club’s classic bingo fundraiser night at Chipping Village Hall which is always so much fun –I even came back from university especially for it last year! n

We all saw the way Qatar were keen to impress the world in their hosting of the football World Cup. Well, the same can be said for the recent growth of horse racing in the Gulf States during winter.
Over the last few years Racing Festivals have become big business in Dubai, Qatar and now Bahrain. We have a group of local owners who own a horse called Digital and he is in training with Roger Fell at Nawton near York. We have decided to send Digital out to Bahrain for the winter and expect him to run in five races there during December, January and February.

locals are apparently mad about racing and their best horses will be running against some UK challengers for big prize money. To us it’s a great opportunity to get away during the winter to a warm climate, have some fun together – and hopefully see Digital win!
None of us have ever been to Bahrain. Like neighbouring Qatar, it is a wealthy country –but with an even smaller population of just 1.5million. HELP IN TIMES OF CRISIS…
As we head into the New Year, volunteers at Ribble Valley Food Bank are bracing themselves for an upsurge of people in need of help
In the last year
Ribble Valley Food Bank has given out more than 1550 food parcels which equates to helping more than 145 individuals and families in need –and going into the New Year it is anticipated demand will be much higher due to the rising cost of living combined with the fuel crisis.
Pete Simm, a former Lancashire police officer for 30 years, is the outgoing manager
of the Ribble Valley Food Bank: “Over the past year I have really had my eyes opened. People think the Ribble Valley would never need a food bank as it is perceived as a very affluent area, but like all areas we have people who have issues and are in need of help, often through no fault of their own.
“And, with all that is going on nationally and globally, this is going to get much worse before it gets better. Don’t think there is a stereotypical person who comes to the food bank. We have professionals who may have lost their job, people who are going through a divorce and find themselves with no money and need a short-term fix. We are not here to judge – just to help. I am not comparing us to Blackburn or Burnley, but there are people here who also have personal crises and need support and guidance.
“What we sometimes find is that some people need support in their moment of need, and we just help them get back on their feet.”
When Pete retired from the police force
18 months ago, he found himself wanting to continue to help others: “I felt I wanted to give something back to the community,” he explains.
“Working at Ribble Valley Food Bank has been a very humbling experience, but it has also been very rewarding too, it is a wonderful charity that is helping often very vulnerable people.”
For the past year Pete headed up a team of 83 willing and enthusiastic volunteers, who give their time so generously, acting as drivers, sorters, packers, welcomers and trained advisers, who can direct people when they need more than food.
“While we are a Christian-led organisation, we have many different roles – we help people with food but we also signpost them to other agencies if the need is there,” says Pete. “It may be they need help from the Citizen’s Advice Bureau or a debt-led agency. We do whatever we can to help.”
Supported by Tesco, Booths and Sainsbury supermarkets, like most official food banks nationwide, the Clitheroe and Longridge branches of the RVFB also rely heavily on food and monetary donations from the general public.
“Each supermarket gives shoppers the opportunity to donate some of their weekly shopping to the food bank, at donation points within the supermarkets,” says Pete,
who points out that the RVFB also has a Clitheroe warehouse.
Volunteer drivers then drop off the items of food at the Clitheroe and Longridge food banks in readiness for the sorters and packers to start work putting together food parcels. Items most needed for the food banks include:
• Tinned ham and any tinned meat products
• Longlife milk
• Tinned custard
• Sponge puddings that can be microwaved
• Sanitary and cleaning products
• Nappies
• Baby milk
Having been with the RVFB for the past year, Pete has seen a gradual increase in the numbers using the facility: “We were expecting an upsurge and particularly in the last eight weeks we have seen a noticeable increase. We are coping with it, but we are still totally reliant on the donations we receive.
“We are extremely lucky here in the Ribble Valley to have people who are very generous donors. It’s quite overwhelming and we would struggle to function without them.”
People in need of help from RVFB, can be referred in a number of ways, including:
• GP
• Job Centre
• Schools
• Social Services
• Children’s wellbeing services
• Churches
Like most UK-wide food banks the RVFB operates under the Trussell Trust which has an online system that enables those referred, to claim a voucher that in turn, enables them to go to their local food bank to claim whatever they need in terms of food and provisions.
“Each parcel is tailor made – it may be for an individual or for a family with four children. If there is a baby, we will take this into account and provide whatever is needed,” adds Pete, who during his time in Clitheroe formed a valuable collaboration with two Clitheroe Market greengrocers, Walkers and Burneys, whereby people eligible to claim a food parcel from the food bank, also receive a voucher in exchange for fresh fruit and vegetables.
“Obviously the food bank can only provide long-life, non-perishables. So, when I first started, this was something I felt very strongly about – giving families the chance to access fresh fruit and vegetables, and it has been a great success.”
The Trussell Trust supports food banks across the country with logistics, administration, equipment and training.
It also sends out weekly online updates as to how national trends and statistics could affect the work the food banks do.
Trussell Trust regional manager Gareth Duffield confirmed that there had been a
recent upturn in the number of people seeking help, saying: “There has been an increase in the Ribble Valley and nationally, one in five people going to food banks are now in work. In the past, food banks were seen as being for people on benefits but now people in work are having to use them and that includes communities within the Ribble Valley.”
He said the team of volunteers at RVFB had risen to the challenge and were doing a fantastic job, but going into 2023, it is predicted that times will get significantly harder: “While we are pleased that the Chancellor is increasing benefits in line with inflation, that isn’t going to happen until April so we are concerned how some people will survive – in the mean time we will be calling for short term support.” n
RVFB is based at Trinity Methodist Church Community Hub, Wesleyan Row, Clitheroe and is open Mondays and Fridays 10.30am – 12.30pm while Longridge is based at St Paul’s Church and is open on Friday 11am – 1.30pm
To donate items of non-perishable food go to Tesco, Booths or Sainsbury. Donations can also be dropped off at the Food Bank warehouse at Unit 2-3, Hawthorn Industrial Park, Upbrooks, Clitheroe BB7 1PL (next door to Castle Motors) on Tuesdays 10am –11.30am or Fridays 8.30am – 10am. trusselltrust.org

celebration at Prep official opening
e o cial opening of Westholme’s new state-of-the-art Prep building in November was an auspicious occasion, celebrated with supporters, dignitaries and Old Westholmians. e event was a culmination of Arthur Rouse’s vision to bring the school together on one site –something the second Principal of Westholme visualised in the 50s. e timing has been pertinent as Westholme looks forward to celebrating their centenary year in 2023 as one family, now all together on site.
Alumna Professor Sophie Scott CBE, undertook the o cial ribbon cutting ceremony and spoke about how her love of Science began at Westholme. “My Westholme Principal was Dr Bond, and she used to teach chemistry. It was my favourite lesson. She was an inspirational role model.”
Providing an inspirational experience for students is something Westholme prides itself on.
“Westholme delivers all-round educational excellence from 4 to 18 that is not just focussed in the classroom,” said Dr Robson, Principal. “We pride ourselves on o ering a holistic approach to learning – giving students opportunities to shine through hundreds of extra-curricular activities to develop as well-rounded individuals,” he added.
Students in Prep not only have an innovative, stimulating building and outdoor spaces to thrive in, the children have access to all the resources available
on site at Westholme. From the professional Croston eatre, on site swimming pool and excellent sports facilities, to the enriching curriculum enhancements delivered by Heads of Faculty specialising in 4 to 18. Together these provide the foundation for an excellent educational experience which aims to wholeheartedly empower every individual child to reach their potential.
Amongst the guests at the o cial opening were e Mayor and Mayoress of Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, the High Sheri of Lancashire, Mrs Croston (Westholme Principal 1988 – 2013) and Mrs Anne Longson, the Great Niece of the school’s founder, Miss Emily Singleton, who all enjoyed a tour of the new Prep and facilities.

spectacular large-scale exhibition has been created to showcase Westholme’s heritage in the foyer of the School’s Croston eatre.
e exhibition takes viewers on a journey through the School’s history from inception at 1923 to key milestones in each decade, right up to current day. Historic artefacts are proudly on display including the original founder’s writing desk (Miss Singleton), war medals from Arthur Rouse, the second Principal, and vintage memorabilia spanning the decades.
e exhibition will be on display for ve years and will become a talking point for many visitors to the School, particularly at a range of celebratory centenary events Westholme have planned for 2023. e rst of such events are a series of Alumni Centenary lunches which Old Westholmians have been invited to, hosted by Mrs Lillian Croston, Westholme’s fourth Principal. 100 years of Westholme will be celebrated by students who will enjoy a Centenary Party day on 19 April 2023 to mark the momentuous anniversary.

In 1923, two young women in Blackburn were unable to nd teaching vacancies. e Local Education Authorities of Blackburn and surrounding towns were so short of funds that as teachers died or retired they were unable to replace them. Miss Emily Singleton and Miss Ivy Richmond viewed their dilemma with stunning logic; if they could not nd a school to employ them, they would have to make their own! And there we began, on 19 April 1923, in the local Wesleyan Chapel. Miss Emily Singleton and Miss Ivy Richmond opened the doors of their school and Westholme was born.
HELPING FAMILIES
a local charity has just launched an art calendar in order to raise awareness and much-needed funds to support the valuable work it does
Arespected Clitheroe-based charity, which has for many years been supporting the mental health and wellbeing of families across the Ribble Valley, has published a delightful calendar following a Draw Clitheroe initiative earlier this year.
Draw Clitheroe saw artists throughout the town centre creating their own pieces of individual artwork. Fast forward and the Foundation for Ribble Valley Families (FRVF) have used 13 of the entries in a 2023 calendar.
Following the Draw Clitheroe event, the
foundation’s Business Development Manager, Dilys Day, saw the opportunity to make more of the artwork: “It seemed like an ideal opportunity to take something that had been such a mindful, family-friendly initiative and turn it into a fund-raiser.”
The Draw Clitheroe event, which is to be repeated in 2023, was the idea of Katherine Rogers of the Platform Gallery and Charlotte Eccles who has lifestyle and gift store Raffia in Clitheroe and who is also a member of the Chamber of Commerce. They were both approached by the foundation with a request to make the calendar.
Helping young people and families cope with mental health issues,
Helen Durrant, from the FRVF, adds: “They both thought it was a superb idea and a great way to acknowledge the popularity of the event.”
The foundation then chose 12 images for each month and one for the cover and approached The Jenny Press in Clitheroe asking them to print the calendar: “They were an obvious choice as we wanted to keep it local as the foundation has a base in Clitheroe, and many of the families we support are from the town.”

suffering with low mood as they can’t seem to get their social lives back on track.
“Offering early counselling sessions is key as that can potentially stop negative feelings in their tracks.”
THE KEY TO SUCCESS IS EARLY INTERVENTION AS YOU CAN OFTEN GIVE ANYONE SUFFERING FROM LOW MOOD OR ANXIETY THE TOOLS TO STOP THOSE FEELINGS FROM ESCALATING
With all proceeds going to FRVF, the A3 calendars are now available through Raffia, Tesco, Keenans and The Shop of Hope in Clitheroe as well as Village News in Sabden.
The foundation was founded by Fiona Maudsley with support from Stephen Blackburn, who are both experts in their field. Fiona has worked with children and
Stephen, who is trained to work in the therapeutic field of coaching is a life coach and works with the charity in order to offer an ‘early intervention’ service to help those with mental health issues.
“The key to success is early intervention as you can often give anyone suffering from low mood or anxiety the tools to stop those feelings from escalating. People can self-refer into the service via the website or though their GP and we also have a GP on the board of trustees,” adds Helen.
FRVF aims to take pressure off GPs in the area by acting early when people approach them for help: “There has definitely been an upturn in the number of referrals particularly in young people,” explains Helen.
“During the pandemic support was limited to being online. The foundation helps young people aged from 10 to 18, who have been particularly disrupted over that time and that has resulted in more anxiety issues.
“Older family members also seem to have suffered in that some of them are
Funded by grants, the National Lottery and charitable donations from numerous local businesses, FRVF offers innovative interventions to promote positive mental health and wellbeing. With the philosophy that prevention is better than cure, support is offered right across the Ribble Valley.
They are able to see people very soon after they are referred for support and they aim to make contact with families within 48 hours of referral. n

THERE HAS DEFINITELY BEEN AN UPTURN IN THE NUMBER OF REFERRALS PARTICULARLY IN YOUNG PEOPLE
HOME TRUTHS
Iwelcomed the new Indian High Commissioner to London, His Excellency Mr Vikram Doraiswami to discuss UK Indian relations and looking at how we can strengthen our Parliamentary links. We have established historic ties over many years between our two amazing countries and Indian businesses have invested huge sums of money into UK firms. I believe the future will lead to even further economic and cultural ties pushed by the interests of both nations leading to growth for both.
One export from the UK to India has to be the world’s longest running soap – Coronation Street. It is shown in many countries around the world and stars from this iconic and legendary show came to the Speaker’s Apartments to celebrate more than 60 years! It has been some time since Ena Sharples was on it, but one living legend who appeared with her was Bill Roache. Bill has been a part of my life since
I was born and Corrie was my dad’s favourite programme. Little did I think a few decades on I would be rubbing shoulders with him, but also that he would become such a dear friend.
Another event in the Speaker’s Apartments was Lancashire Day and it was tremendous to see business and civic leaders join together to celebrate everything about this great county. The day started with me being grilled alongside Katherine Fletcher MP, by the BBC’s Graham Liver. I have done so many interviews over 30 years with Radio Lancashire and I pay tribute to its social service in informing the county about local and national issues and giving MPs an opportunity to explain what they are doing in their constituencies.
In Mellor I was delighted to visit a new luxury lodge venture called Everything Retreat, the brainchild of local businesswoman Louise Monk. Her enthusiasm and imagination is evident in each of the detached lodges. We all know how idyllic the Ribble Valley is, but now tourists will have the opportunity to hop from the M6 junction and within 15 minutes be relaxing in the ultimate luxury!
I was joined by a former Clitheroe Mayor in London to witness another
acting legend take to the stage and be interviewed by
Dame Judi Dench was amazing as her personality and experience shone through. Her talent is huge and her bubbly persona was on full display as Kevin and I chatted to her afterwards in her dressing room. She is one of Britain’s truly great actors and it was lovely to tell her how much I enjoyed her portrayal of M!
Finally, I was over the moon to see Clitheroe recognised as one of the top 15 places to shop. It is fantastic that the retailers, the market, coffee bar s, barbers, pubs and restaurants alongside estate agents and shops small and large, are offering such a wonderful service. They have gone through much but have bounced back strong and they deserve our support.
With 2022 behind us and 2023 knocking at the door, I will be spending time with family and friends in the Ribble Valley – the area I call home, and I’ll be raising a glass to my friends whom I love and to the future, which I pray brings happiness and good health to us all.
May God bless you and I wish each and every one of you the warmest of wishes and all the very best for the new year ahead. n
Gyles Brandreth.Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans celebrates Lancashire Day and is delighted to see Clitheroe named as one of the best places to shop
THE TRUE COST OF A DIY DIVORCE
Since the introduction of the ‘no fault’ divorce law in April 2022, there has been a gradual rise in couples seeking to complete the divorce process without the assistance of legal advisors, in what is commonly referred to as a ‘Do It Yourself Divorce’.
Firstly, whilst the process to apply for a divorce is more straightforward than previously; as with many official documents, it’s easy to make mistakes or miss important parts, which can lead to potential errors and delays in your divorce coming through.
Perhaps, more importantly, omitting to tell the court that there are financial matters to be dealt with could be fatal.
There is also a common misconception that once a DIY divorce is completed, that’s it.
However, financial matters and child arrangements are unfortunately not automatically dealt with within the divorce process. Separate steps are needed to officially finalise these. If financial matters are not dealt with in the form of a financial settlement, it could lead to claims made
against you by your spouse at a later date; impacting significantly on your finances, whether that be in terms of property, business interests, pensions or inheritance.
might look like a more cost-effective way of separating from your spouse; without guidance from a professional with many years of experience of the process, it may end up being a worse decision, particularly financially, than seeking expert advice from the outset.
After a divorce, you may decide to remarry without realising this could potentially cause you to lose financial claims against your former spouse. This is commonly referred to as the ‘remarriage trap’ and has caused issues for many couples who have completed a DIY divorce without expert legal advice from a professional.
For my part, I am often asked to help in situations where a person had not taken legal advice and ended up agreeing to a settlement which is far from fair, or in circumstances where you may be entitled to much more. Whilst on the face of it, a DIY divorce
A legal professional can not only advise you on the paperwork and steps to take throughout the process, but can also provide the strategic support and reassurance that you don’t get with a DIY divorce. Having an expert who can also signpost you to additional services including mediation to resolve disputes, provide financial advice post-divorce, and not forgetting our private client service to update your will, means that we help you to deal with all of the challenges you face at this difficult time and achieve solutions that are right for you. n

MOUNTAIN & ELECTRIC BIKE SPECIALISTS –ON YOUR DOORSTEP
Owner of MTB Monster, Paul Hoyle, has turned his love of mountain biking into a successful business. Gail Bailey meets Paul to find out more
Following the completion of his Business Management degree, Paul Hoyle was working in landscape design and construction when he decided to turn his favourite hobby into a business.
“Biking has always been a passion of mine. At every opportunity I’m exploring new routes and enjoying everything that mountain biking has to offer. There is no end to the challenges you can set yourself, after 20 years of riding I’m still learning,
improving and occasionally falling off!”
After much consideration, and with the support of his wife Hannah, they sold their house, moved in with family and took on their biggest challenge yet! That was in 2014. Since then MTB Monster has gone from strength to strength: “We started with a small unit and only myself working full time, but I’m happy to say that in eight years we have grown into a large showroom displaying more than 70 bikes and a full range of accessories along with a fully operational
service centre. We have an enthusiastic and dedicated team of 15 people providing our customers with expert sales, service and warranty support.”
Stocking some of the world’s best bike brands including Trek, Cube, Yeti, Orbea, Nukeproof Whyte and Mondraker, the Longsight Road showroom is packed with high performance bikes and an extensive range of accessories from brands such as Hope, Endura, Fox and Burgtec. MTB Monster are always well stocked with products they have tried, tested and can personally recommend.
THE SERVICE CONTINUES WELL AFTER THE SALE IS COMPLETED. ON COLLECTION DAY, THE TEAM WILL MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS EXACTLY RIGHT
An unwavering focus on providing excellent customer service is key.
Paul explains: “When you’re riding offroad, the bike you require varies massively depending on the terrain you are tackling and the speed you are tackling it at. For some, the bike will be used to commute to and from work on rough roads and muddy canal paths or for a ride down the sea front.
“While for others it will be used for steep off-road climbs, loose rocky bridleways, followed by technical single-track descents and massive drop offs. Our team is made up of all types of riders from competitive enduro racers to those who enjoy Sunday afternoons out with the kids, you are always able to chat to someone who really understands what you need and can offer great advice.”
The service continues well after the sale is completed. On collection day, the team will make sure everything is exactly right. The appointed mechanic is on hand to fine tune the fit with the customer. A detailed handover takes place and any questions answered. For peace of mind, all customers are offered a free six-week check-up in the workshop so any niggles are dealt with by a professional. A dedicated warranty team is on
hand should you need support down the line. This overall level of service is the reason that they have such an excellent and established reputation including over 300 5* reviews on Google and countless returning customers.
Electric mountain bikes have grown in popularity in recent years and MTB Monster have an extensive range of full suspension, front suspension and touring E-bikes available from the big players including Bosch, Shimano TQ, e-motion and Fazua.
and our mechanics are fully trained to deal with the electric side of our bikes as well. The workshop is equipped with the latest technology and software so mechanics can update bikes and carry out diagnostics. Any problems that occur are dealt with here, you can just roll the bike through the door for support.”
ANY PROBLEMS THAT OCCUR ARE DEALT WITH HERE, YOU CAN JUST ROLL THE BIKE THROUGH THE DOOR FOR SUPPORT
0% finance for up to 48 months*
Although the building has changed MTB Monster’s ethos has not altered since the first day. “We believe in hard work and dedicating our time and energy to the customer, so their experience with us is overwhelmingly positive.”
“E-bikes have been a fantastic addition to our business,” Paul says. “They still require effort and therefore help improve fitness. They are popular with a wide range of customers including those returning to sport after time out, first time bikers and often, seasoned mountain bikers who want to be able to get in plenty of miles of exploring in a shorter space of time or ascend to the top of a climb quickly and with less effort so they can enjoy more time descending a single track.”
Hannah adds: “E-bikes require maintenance,
MTB Monster is a local showroom you can walk into, but as they are also a wellestablished online retailer, they have an informative website, a YouTube channel where they review the latest models and a wide range of payment options so you can spread the cost of a new bike and accessories, including the acceptance of all Cycle to Work Scheme vouchers and highly competitive
“I cannot rate this store and the staff highly enough. The attention to detail is phenomenal and the communication throughout my purchase was clear, thorough and timely. I could tell that this is a business that is passionate about the bikes they sell and the customers they serve!”
The team at MTB would love to see you! Whether a complete novice or an experienced technical rider, you will be sure of a warm welcome, great advice and a showroom packed with the latest in mountain bike technology. You can make an appointment in advance or just turn up to browse. n

EVERYTHING… & MORE
Luxury lodges with hot tubs, a private bar and kitchen where world-class chefs can cook for you – all located in a beautiful rural setting. Everything Retreat can be whatever you want it to be, writes Hilary Shepherd
It’s now just four months since the first guests arrived at Everything Retreat and each have brought with them their own reasons to visit the Ribble Valley. There has been a proposal of marriage, a babymoon, a bridesmaids weekend away, a long distance romance meeting half way and more than a few ‘first night away since…’
The guest book and feedback reviews have been 100 per cent positive with everyone saying they will be back. In fact, the top returner is this very weekend back in another lodge as he and his wife want to try out each one before settling on a favourite – and he travels from Longridge! His feeling is that even though it’s just 20 minutes away from their beautiful home and businesses, they feel like its another world – a brief escape – and chance to connect.
The diary for the past two weeks though has been extreme. Phase two is now complete and open for business! There is a private bar and
room with private kitchen (under construction) that will allow groups who take over the retreat to host their own meetings and events. The kitchen design has Lisa Goodwin Allen from Northcote ticking off her thoughts and desires for this first-class cooking space that will offer chefs the opportunity to cook at your private party.
It really can be whatever you want it to be! From the moment you pick up the phone the concierge service will swing into action and make everything possible – as long as its legal! Flowers sir? Dinner at a local restaurant? Golf at a premier course? Guided walks and tours of the valley? Absolutely.
Ribble Valley Tourism Association met for a tour and talk this week and all again agreed it is a totally new experience to bring even more folk into the glorious Ribble Valley. The final event of 2022 marked the launch of the new BMW I7 at the retreat in conjunction with Porsche Preston so Louise and her team were once again working like swans – gliding on the surface and peddling like mad underneath! But, you know what? That’s just one more reason why Everything works. n
This was royally tested last week firstly with journalists from publications all over the UK for dinner and an overnight stay and the following day with a full house of influencers and social experts whose only obligation was to share their experience. Again – a resounding thumbs up with already two booking out the whole retreat for a fully curated ‘golf for the boys’ and ‘beauty for the girls’ weekend and another hosting a wellness retreat for female entrepreneurs.

It’s hard to say exactly why this is the case, perhaps the rising cost of living, but I’m sadly seeing an increasing amount of cases on my desk where coercive and financial control are playing a role in the breakdown of people’s relationships. I also regret to say that my experience as a divorce lawyer informs me that the festive period will have been especially difficult for the victims of this type of abuse.
The festive period can be so special. The decorations, the films, the songs, and the fact that, even for just a few weeks in the year, everyone seems to be just that little bit nicer to each other. It can then be particularly hurtful to think that your partner is constantly putting you down, depriving you of your independence and controlling you and your time when others have been sharing affections beneath the mistletoe. If you find yourself in that position, you’d be justified in considering that you may be a victim of coercive control.
We know that not all domestic abuse is
DIVORCE LAWYER’S
FINANCIAL AND COERCIVE CONTROL: WHY CHRISTMAS WON’T HAVE BEEN MERRY FOR EVERYONE
physical and coercive control could be said to cover many of the remaining forms of abuse such as humiliation, intimidation, and isolation from family (which, during the holidays, can cut particularly deep).
still plenty when it came to your spouse’s Christmas drinks with their mates.
Financial control may also have been especially evident over the holidays, particularly if you are the ‘economic weaker’ spouse (regardless of gender). This may have expressed itself by your spouse having a little more in the kitty when it came to their family’s gifts but denying you the same amount for yours (once you worked up the courage to ask, of course). Perhaps you had to miss out on Christmas drinks with your friends because there wasn’t any spare cash, but somehow there was
If you’re in this situation, it’s important to remember, that you are not as weak, nor as powerless as they may make you feel. A solicitor could guide you through the steps necessary to gain back your independence. Regardless of what your spouse might say, if you are currently married, you are entitled to share in the assets of the marriage, regardless of your financial contribution. If you are fearful of your partner and need protection, a solicitor can help you put legal measures in place, such as a non-molestation order. Even if you have no access to funds, a solicitor could help you make an application for ‘interim maintenance’ to ensure that your spouse pays towards your living costs whilst divorce proceedings are ongoing.
A solicitor could help you take back control and regain the confidence you’ve lost over time. So this year, if you want to escape a controlling relationship – you can, you just need to grasp the nettle. n
When a relationship comes to an end it can be a difficult time for everyone. As well as the emotional heartache and confusion you’ll likely have lots of questions about the best way to move forward legally. That’s where we come in. We’re family law experts with the experience, compassion, and energy to help you get to a better place!

“It’s going to be super cool!” she says. “So, if couples choose to marry at the 200-year-old ‘Lonesome Pine’ within the woodland garden, or at any of the other lovely wedding locations on the estate, drinks can be served there.”
Each year Browsholme Hall, which is the Grade I listed ancestral home of the Parker family, invests in new projects to keep the buildings and the grounds in tip-top shape – future-proofing the historic house for generations to come.
Built in 1507, Browsholme has been well and truly brought into the 21st century by current family members Robert and Amanda Parker, daughter Eleanor and son Roland.
Last year saw the creation of a ‘woodland garden’, which will eventually extend to 10 acres, for which a selection of beautiful trees and shrubs, including rhododendron, magnolia, cherry and acers have been chosen. Fifty-six couples who got married at Browsholme came to the first tree-planting ceremonies in 2022, celebrating their marriage and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee #greencanopy. In 2023, for the King’s Coronation, this will be repeated to create a hazel and walnut orchard overlooking the lake.
“This is proving to be so popular!” says Eleanor. “We have had couples who got married here 10 years ago contacting us to see if they can plant a tree in the woodland garden.”
In what looks set to be another busy year for the hall, 2023 will see the re-modelling
The mobile bar will also be used at other events held at Browsholme throughout the year. Coming up are a series of wedding showcases and informal drop-in days, workshops and a two-day gastronomy tour conducted by Bowland and Bay.
For wedding accommodation or for short stays in the Ribble Valley, there are two cosy cottages, including the sumptuous, newly refurbished Shepherd’s Cottage, plus the Woodland Glade, where there are 10 luxury glamping lodges. n

The tree becomes part of the living legacy in honour of Her Majesty, joining over a million trees already planted across the UK as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy.

Stonyhurst is proud to announce that Head Boy, Dilip, was recently awarded the British Citizen Youth Award during a medal ceremony at the Palace of Westminster. The British Citizen Youth Award is designed to recognise the individual endeavours of young people who are positively impacting their communities, helping charities, or undertaking exceptional activities in support of others. The event was hosted by Dame Mary Perkins and Kimberly Wyatt who are patrons of the award. Dilip said: “The education we receive at Stonyhurst both inside the classroom and through co-curricular activities, allows us to go into the world and make the most of our talents and skills. I spoke at the ceremony about the importance of being men and women for others and of the Jesuit pupil profile values that are so prevalent throughout a Stonyhurst education.”
experiences and activities, without being preoccupied with the virtual world of social media. The school has invested greatly in IT in recent years, with all pupils from Year 5 having their own laptops and access to the very latest smart adaptive technology that drives rapid progress in individual learning, particularly in English, maths, and science.
A WORLD OF ADVENTURE
In their final year of St Mary’s Hall, the Preparatory School for Stonyhurst College, polite and confident young teenagers are ready to make the smooth transition to senior education
At Stonyhurst St Mary’s Hall (SMH) Prep School children enjoy an extra two years to extend the adventure of childhood, as they mature and progress to Stonyhurst College at the age of 13 –enabling them to embark on a senior education with a greater sense of wellbeing and personal confidence.
“There has, in the past, been traditional entry points to Stonyhurst including nursery, Year 7, Year 9 and Year 12,” explains Headmaster Fr Christopher Cann, who joined SMH at the start of September.
“However, we are seeing more children coming to Stonyhurst in Year 5 – a move that is advantageous in many ways.
“Years 5 and 6 see pupils finish the primary stage, then Years 7 and 8 at SMH has a ‘middle school’ feel about it. These extra two years at SMH give pupils the chance to fully grow in personal confidence. They are at the top end of the prep school, which gives them time to mature and develop their personal leadership skills before they move up to the college for senior education. Nurtured in our Jesuit ethos and mission, they want to be ‘all they can be’ in a life of purpose, as young men and women for others.”
Parents are finding there are many advantages of entering SMH at Year 5.
Firstly, many parents know that their children are not ready to move to a senior school environment at 11. They are looking for another path to avoid this very stressful transition. Secondly, the prep school provides wrap-around care from 8am to 6pm making it excellent value for busy working parents and homework is done at school.
The main advantage, however, is SMH’s
broad bespoke curriculum, which gives children the opportunity to play a huge variety of sports, enjoy a rich experience of performing arts, particularly musical theatre, learn new skills, including three foreign languages and make new friends with children from across the globe: “The extended day provides a world of new opportunities for pupils. Parents often complain that state primary schools have to resort to a narrow basic curriculum, particularly in Year 6, which is SATS driven,” adds Fr Chris.
WE ARE MORE CONCERNED WITH THE INDIVIDUAL LEARNING JOURNEY AND WELLBEING OF EACH INDIVIDUAL IN ITS WIDEST SENSE
“At SMH we don’t believe in SATS. We are still able to give parents a very clear assessment of how their children are doing in all their subjects in relation to national expectations, without having to resort to a very unimaginative test-driven curriculum. We are more concerned with the individual learning journey and wellbeing of each individual in its widest sense.
“The pupils at the top end of SMH in Years 7 and 8 are free to be themselves, to still live their childhood and have confidence in themselves and who they are as young teenagers. This is so important for their wellbeing and as a springboard for young adult life.”
A strict policy on not allowing mobile phones during the school day enables pupils to take full advantage of the many real-life
Sport is high on the agenda too, SMH pupils have access to a world-class indoor tennis dome with two Grand Slam-sized courts and a 25m on-site swimming pool. Boys and girls can play rugby, football, hockey, netball, tennis and cricket at the highest levels.
“We take pupils and, especially from Years 5 to 8, we see a transformation, which is very affirming. Our pupils develop into polite young people with good manners. They are very open, proactive and genuinely want to ask if you are having a good day!
“This is a culture that’s sadly very rare in young people in our wider society today,” adds Fr Chris.

The highly experienced team at Brennand’s all have high standards and expectations, putting each individual child at the heart of everything they do. The 300-year-old listed building has space for four classrooms as well as an outdoor forest school with a trained forest schoolteacher who runs weekly sessions for pupils.
There is also a wealth of opportunity for extra-curricular learning including school trips, activities and enrichment programmes that enable children to flourish and grow into well-rounded young people, who progress and continue to excel at Bowland High School and Clitheroe Royal Grammar.
Forging excellent relationships with parents, the school is also offering a range of baby and toddler groups to share the provision with families in the Ribble Valley from January.
At the centre of the Slaidburn community, Brennand’s Endowed Primary School, has had a recent Ofsted report that celebrates all the wonderful provision and education it provides, as the headteacher concludes: “I have never been to a school like it – it’s wonderful. I don’t think a lot of people know we are here and we’re just a 14-minute drive over the fell from the centre of Clitheroe!”
Aprimary school with exceptional teaching and set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is hoping to make parents more aware of the excellent education it provides for its pupils.

WE ARE TRYING TO SHOWCASE ALL THE AMAZING FACILITIES WE HAVE HERE IN ORDER TO ATTRACT MORE PUPILS IN EACH YEAR GROUPJames Dunne is the third generation of the Dunne family at the helm of successful Blackburn company Prestige Beds, writes Gail Bailey Photography: Kirsten Platt
Prestige Beds was founded in 1959 by James Dunne’s grandfather, after whom he was named:
“On leaving the RAF my grandad began working for a furniture company,” explains Operations Director James. “He wanted to begin his own business and noticed a gap in the market for a specialist bed company – and so Prestige Beds was born, the first of its kind in the country.”
The family-owned company has a proud heritage spanning more than six decades, and now has five stores including warehouses in Blackburn, Preston, Burnley and Hyndburn providing the North West with the same high level of service they have done for over half a century. This growth has meant an increase in staff and the company now employs 27 people across all their stores in sales as well as warehousing, deliveries and most recently their in-house marketing team.
Today Prestige Beds work with some of the business’s top suppliers, such as Hypnos, Harrison Spinks, Tempur, Vispring, Sealy, Sleepeezee and Relyon and stocks a comprehensive range of over 1,000 beds and mattresses across their stores.
and always offering a first-rate service,” James says.
James was Blackburn born and bred and educated locally at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School, spending summer holidays working in the business as a ‘drivers’ mate’ helping with deliveries: “I went to Manchester University briefly, but my heart was in the family business, so I returned, and my grandad encouraged me to be involved in the company and become a part of it,” explains James.
After spending four years working as a driver James moved into sales and marketing before he progressed to his current role as Operations Director four years ago: “It has been a huge benefit to have worked ‘hands-on’ in the company from grass roots up and gain experience in all aspects of the business,” he says.
Prestige Beds still has the same ethos at its’ core that has enabled it to grow over the years into the success it is today: “My grandad ensured the business was customer centric. Our reputation is based on our unwavering focus on our customers
“My grandad introduced a free delivery service, which still stands today along with our team assembling beds in the room of choice and taking the old one away which is re-cycled. Consistency is absolutely key and maintaining high standards threads through the whole team – we have a very low turnover of staff and most of the team have been with us a number of years.”
James is obviously kept busy but outside of work has a huge passion for football and is a big fan of his beloved local club Blackburn Rovers: “We are proud to be in Blackburn and have been a long-standing corporate sponsor of the team and this season are happy to be commercial partners,” he says.
Prestige Beds are successful because they don’t stand still and James is always looking to the future: “We are launching our new website, which we’ve been working on for the last 18 months and further expansion is always at the forefront of our minds. We know there is a demand for high quality bed specialists in other towns and hope to further expand.”
In March this year Prestige Beds opened a store on Hyndburn Retail Park: “This was
initially a temporary outlet for us, and our first venture on a retail park. However, it has been so successful that we are now keeping the shop there!” James says.
Very much a family affair, James’ father Joe is Managing Director in the business and his younger brother now works in the sales department too.
The exceptional service from James and his team is evident with a recent review stating: “I cannot recommend this company highly enough. Very friendly and amenable with great product knowledge, great service, great staff – an all-round brilliant company.” n

INHERITANCE TAX: PLANNING IS VITAL
HM Treasury have confirmed that Inheritance Tax (IHT) receipts are up 14 per cent year on year in 2021-2022 hitting a record high of £6.1 billion. This surge in IHT payments is attributable to varying factors but particularly the rise in asset values as well as the UK Governments move to freeze the Nil Rate Band (NRB) for IHT to £325,000 until 2026 at the earliest.
If the value of your estate is above the £325,000 threshold, then IHT may be applied at 40 per cent above that amount.
However, 6th April 2017 marked the first time that former Chancellor George Osborne’s 2015 ‘£1 million IHT free’ statement became fact. The Government introduced an additional allowance for deaths after 6th April 2017 known as the Residence Nil Rate Band (RNRB) that can now increase your tax-free threshold by an extra £175,000.
Any assets passing to a spouse or civil partner (CP) when you die are free of IHT. Therefore, your NRB might be increased if you are widowed or are a surviving CP. A surviving spouse or CP’s estate can claim any unused NRB from the first to die’s estate. This can double the amount of NRB available up to £650,000 on second death.
and this definition includes stepchildren on death
• Had a family home, then downsized on or after 8th July 2015 (passing on assets of equivalent value to ‘direct descendants’ in their will),
RNRB is transferable between spouses/CPs in a similar way to the NRB. This can double the amount of RNRB available to £350,000. Adding these together, would give you a potential allowance of £1million before any IHT is payable.
RNRB is fully available to anyone who:
• Passes the family home to ‘direct descendants’ – broadly children/ grandchildren and/or their spouses,

When it’s time to plan the future Let’s plan it together
None of us know what will happen next. So it’s important to make plans. Whether you’re arranging a will, setting up a power of attorney or dealing with inheritance tax and wealth management plans, you need expert help – so let’s do it together.

together is better
• Has a net estate below £2m RNRB unfortunately adds a layer of complexity. The ability to pass up to £1 million of your estate IHT-free will be available in certain circumstances. But establishing the position could be very complicated and will depend on several factors including marital status, whether you have children, value of your family home, value of your total estate on death – and who ultimately inherits the family home.
If you want to maximise the benefits of the RNRB you should consider the terms of your Will and consider the need for lifetime estate planning to help minimise IHT exposure. n For more information please contact a member of the Napthens team

SHAPE UP YOUR FINANCES THIS NEW YEAR…
In this article, Wayne Hayhurst Branch Principal of Raymond James, Ribble Valley, discusses the merits of people evaluating their financial objectives and life goals, and how a New Year’s resolution is a great opportunity to do so
In the heart of Longridge, situated in the old NatWest bank building on the high street, Raymond James, Ribble Valley, offers a range of services and capabilities normally only found in big cities.
Here are some practical ideas for your financial plans this year, as well as some ways the Raymond James, Ribble Valley, team might help.
Make sure you’re on track to meet your financial goals
People often don’t know if they’re on track to meet their most important financial goals.
In fact, when asked, the answer to this question is typically ‘no’, or ‘I don’t know’. Financial goals are specific to each person and could be anything from making sure you are on track to fund a three-decade retirement without financial worry, planning an exit from your business, funding a child’s
education or perhaps making sure your estate will end up with the people you want it to, for the reasons you choose.
Get a firm grasp of your financial affairs
It is often the case that individuals amass a variety of pensions, investments and policies over their lifetime. This can result in a bombardment of confusing statements and updates, leaving people feeling overwhelmed and not in control of their finances. At Raymond James we can advise on all types of pensions, plans and policies, as well as help simplify and consolidate all these accumulated assets.
Why not have 2023 as the year to get all the miscellaneous plans and policies reviewed, refreshed, simplified and back under control.
Review your pensions and retirement plans
Pensions are often people’s second most valuable asset after their home but are frequently neglected. It is important that they are serviced and looked after accordingly, just like you would a car. For instance, such a considerable asset being invested largely
out of line with your risk tolerance or an inappropriate asset allocation, could have a detrimental impact on your retirement plans.
How much will your pension provide in retirement? How much should you be saving? How many years will your pension last at your desired standard of living before running out?
We can help you answer these questions and devise a smart plan to ensure you achieve your retirement income goals.
Brush up on your financial literacy and become more money-wise
Many people don’t believe they have a solid grasp of personal finance or the stock market.
If our public education system included financial literacy in the core curriculum, it would help us get off to a solid financial start. But for the time being, it appears that we are alone.
How do we help people with their
financial affairs?
the most trusted and prominent wealth management firm in the Ribble Valley.
But keep in mind! Financial literacy is a marathon, not a sprint. Avoid exhausting yourself by attempting to absorb everything at once.
Instead, consider developing sound financial practises as a new habit. You will be on your way to forming sound routines that will position you for success over the long run if you gradually incorporate little amounts of financial education into your daily life. Reading a personal finance book or listening to a financial podcast are both effective ways to begin learning more.
WHY NOT HAVE 2023 AS THE YEAR TO GET ALL THE MISCELLANEOUS PLANS AND POLICIES REVIEWED, REFRESHED, SIMPLIFIED AND BACK UNDER CONTROL
Rebalance your investment portfolio
You must make sure your portfolio is well-balanced and prepared for whatever comes next, especially given the persistently unstable economic and political climates we are presently experiencing. At Raymond James, Ribble Valley, we may be able to obtain better investment performance with less risk.
We provide individuals and businesses a premium, independent, full-service solution. Our Longridge branch’s diversity of specialists enables us to assist clients in achieving both their financial and personal goals. We support our clients in increasing their wealth, sustaining their lifestyle and transferring wealth to loved ones. With world class systems and research, we are able to provide the financial muscle, infrastructure and resources of a sizeable global financial juggernaut. However, we can also offer the affable, high-calibre service you would expect from a small, locallyowned company.
We don’t outsource our work to other service providers or businesses since we have the capacity, resources and know-how to handle every aspect of a full-service solution in-house. This allows our clients to deal faceto-face with specific specialists and strips out layers of costs as clients aren’t paying several different companies for the solution they receive. n
Risk Warning: With investing your capital is at risk
Our team of 22 in-house specialists enable us to provide bespoke solutions to match our clients’ individual financial objectives and circumstances. The specialist roles include:
• Char tered Financial Planners

Happy new year to you all – I’ve had so many mails and texts asking why I didn’t have a November column – note to self for next year!
Let’s start with the positives. I’m delighted to see that the leader of RVBC, Stephen Atkinson, has finally agreed to an interview in this issue. Let’s hope it’s the first of a series of articles. His main subject is the incredulous proposed changes to the constituency boundaries, which have left me flummoxed to say the least. I do understand the principle is to create a more evenly balanced set of UK constituencies but what possible symbiosis is there between Clitheroe and Colne?
There’s also a famous big hill between them, which isn’t just symbolic. I’m also astounded that the Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans hasn’t mentioned the proposed changes in this month’s, or indeed any previous articles. If this went ahead, we would have to rotate between Nigel and his Pendle counterpart – the new MP for Clitheroe, Whalley, Chatburn and surrounding villages and Nigel wouldn’t even live in his own constituency. The new Ribble Valley would also include parts of South Ribble with literally no connection to all that the Ribble Valley stands for. The longer-term impact and fallout are yet to be seen – is it a done deal and therefore too little, too late? I hope not, but time is against delivering change. With local elections in May and a general election in the next 18 months, the political landscape
could well change. We need to ensure that those elected, represent all our needs and wishes – it’s our job to challenge and lobby if we want to see change. Turnout at local elections is notoriously low so don’t be an armchair critic and apathetic.
The Mumbai streets of Clitheroe are finally making progress, albeit very, very slowly.
Subject to some legals and red tape, I’m reliably told that RVBC has signed off the matched funding with LCC but work might not start until 2024. At least the new chair of LCC Highways is a Ribble Valley resident and I’ve no doubt we will be lobbying Rupert Swarbrick in due course.
I’m also told that the money from Central Government, from the Shared Prosperity Fund, has been approved.
The £1.9m over three years is a welcome boost that needs to be spent both wisely and quickly as any unused funds would have to be returned. From memory, a rather hurried list of projects had been cobbled together by the council to meet deadlines. In my view stakeholders now need to be consulted and a serious plan drawn up of key projects aimed at maximising the use of this money.
As we start the new year, I am naturally worried about the local economy and the increasing number of empty shops on the Ribble Valley high streets, notably in Clitheroe. My clients tell me that things have already slowed down in certain sectors and my friends in hospitality face an even tougher start to 2023. We must all pull together and create compelling arguments and reasons to keep the local economy strong – events to drive tourism and footfall, support from RVBC, active and enthusiastic Chambers of Trade must all play their part alongside an educated group of locals, who can see the value of a strong local economy. Our magazine remains fully committed in supporting these initiatives.
One of my other major fears is the pressure on our local food banks. We’ve also an article in this issue explaining their ‘perfect storm’, huge increases in requests and referrals and a huge downturn in donations. I urge you to try and help by donating time, or a little surplus food, to help your local community.
I’m sure like me, you will be making a host of new year resolutions. Many will be broken as our willpower and resolve are tested, but please add being kind to this year’s list. It doesn’t cost a penny and it’s one resolution to aim to keep for 2023. n
The views above are my own and I’d be delighted to get some replies to my questions and will report back on any progress and positive outcomes.

DYNAMIC DRIVE...
Paul Agnew takes the all-new BMW X1 for a test drive through the Ribble Valley to discover a car that is slick, sporty and self-assured.
Photography: Andy TigheAcar can mean different things to different people. Some see it as a luxury, others deem it a necessity. Some seek style and gadgets, others simply a comfortable and reliable means of getting from A to B.
And then there are those (you know who you are) who treat their car with deep devotion – wiping it down if it runs through a dirty puddle, patting it on the bonnet after a particularly testing or long-distance drive or – wait for it – even affording it a pet name!
Whatever your inclinations and demands, you can rest assured that there is almost certainly a car out there for you.
But is there such a thing as a car to suit everyone?
The short answer, my friends, is ‘yes’ and it can be found at Bowker BMW right now in the shape of the brilliant new X1.
STATE-OF-THE-ART CHASSIS TECHNOLOGIES
GUARANTEEING A DRIVE EXPERIENCE FULL OF DYNAMICS AND AGILITY. THE STEERING IS SUBLIME, SO SLICK AND RESPONSIVE

out, and one that immediately wins you over.
We’re talking genuine kerb appeal –strong black detail contrasting with the glorious main colour to really enhance the exterior look – and an interior with just about everything you could possibly need, yet all of it delivered without fuss or clutter. A clean car in every sense.
According to the official blurb: “The new BMW X1 impresses with its comprehensive versatility and functionality, with a clearly structured design and self-assured presence.”
All true, but bonus points to the BMW marketing folk for not overstating the case, for there is much to wax lyrical about.
Among the many bonuses for those lucky enough to call a new BMW X1 their own are a heated steering wheel (in leather), folding wing mirrors with auto dimming, adaptive LED headlights, electric memory seats, 19” alloy wheels – double spoke style, adaptive suspension, front sport seats –heated, alarm system, high beam assistant, sun protection glass, highly-sophisticated navigation system, reversing assist camera –trust me, the list of goodies is far greater than the editorial space allows here.
It looks great with a dynamic front, complete with large double kidney grille and broad front prone, moving to the
was entrusted to test the BMW X1 xDrive23d M Sport Premier model (in a particularly striking Portimao Blue) a car with a genuine sporty appearance, inside andclearly defined contours running parallel to the flowing roof line and ending with the distinctive rear. The smart appearance helped in no small way by the aforementioned black trims and details.
Handling is superb – front-wheel drive, ultra-efficient engine and state-of-the-art chassis technologies guaranteeing a drive experience full of dynamics and agility. The steering is sublime, so slick and responsive.
Particularly eye-catching inside is the live cockpit with huge, but not over-intrusive, curved widescreen instrument display – slim and frameless and to all the world the latest tablet. In touch with everything and within touching distance (or by voice control if you prefer) it ensures seamless communication between you and your vehicle.
There is a real sense of calm about the interior, helped by the Alcantara/Sensatec black seats with blue stitching and you never feel overpowered. All the technology you require is here, but it isn’t forever dancing or flashing in front of you. Subtlety is very much a key element.
Some might say the new BMW X1 is an SUV of sorts, but while not a huge car by any means, it is certainly big enough. All passengers enjoy a generously proportioned and open atmosphere of well-being and it
also comes with a towbar which goes some way to underpin the general capability and flexibility on offer.
For your extra comfort there is, of course, the acclaimed package of BMW products including BMW TeleServices, BMW Emergency Call, BMW Online Services and Connected Package Pro and so forth.
You’ll always be on the right track with the proactive route suggested by BMW maps-connected navigation, smartphone integration supports Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto and the handily placed wireless ‘charging tray’ charges your smartphone inductively. Clever stuff.
Little wonder that the new BMW X1 is attracting so many complimentary comments, rave reviews and admiring glances.
But just who exactly is it aimed at, the so-called target market? More importantly, could it be the car for you? The ‘target market’ is everyone, I honestly can’t think of anyone it wouldn’t suit.
Best advice is to go and have a look for yourself, take a spin and discover what all the fuss is about. Irrespective of your motoring needs and wants, I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed. n
AND STILL THE CHAMPION…
There is something about the drama of testing yourself against an opponent whose goal is to knock you out. To some it’s a metaphor for life, but what often grips us is the why? David Fearnhead speaks to boxer Mickey Ellison to discover his motivation.
Photography: Mark Robinson, Matchroom Boxing
If you’d have seen Mickey Ellison after his fight in October you could have assumed he took a beating. His left eye was closed, his right seemingly on its way to a similar destiny. Yet he wore a broad grin. He had just retained his Central Area Light Heavyweight title on his first defence. There to witness it was his wife Jade and his two sons Rocco, six, and Rudy, four.
“I had to win it for them, I couldn’t let them see their dad lose.” In a sentence Mickey Ellison had just answered the question of why?
Ellison had claimed the title by knockout in July. However, two losses prior to that fight saw him cast as the underdog. Surprisingly, those losses are still raw. They still prick like a sharp needle to the skin. He is quick to address them, unprompted, even before talking about his victory.
“I got a first round stoppage. It was just one of those nights. He caught me cold. Then I fought for the English title against a boxer who I’d previously beat, and we tried to box him rather than beat him the
way I could,” he says.
Those aren’t excuses, but context.
“They looked at me having had a couple of losses and were thinking it would be a winnable fight for them. A gatekeeper, before he moved on to fight for a British title himself. And they obviously got it wrong.”
Driving the 32-year-old fighter was the importance of setting a positive example to his sons.
“Sometimes life is tough, and you have to show that you can carry on and not quit. Everyone has setbacks in life and you have bigger setbacks in life than losing a boxing match. So, it’s not going to make me turn away from the sport.
“There’s no padding in my record. It’s always been about testing myself. The defeats
WHAT MAKES HIS SUCCESS ALL THE MORE REMARKABLE IS THAT WHILST HIS OPPONENTS ARE MOSTLY PROFESSIONALS, HE IS STILL HOLDING DOWN A FULL-TIME JOB
gave me more spite to come back and win. I think I’m quite a nice guy really, but when I get my hands wrapped that’s when I know there is no going back. It’s showtime.”
What makes his success all the more remarkable is that whilst his opponents are mostly professionals, he is still holding down a full-time job as a joiner.
“I come home from work and warm up the food that my wife has made me. Get changed and set off to the gym. When I’m in the gym I give it everything because I don’t want to be taking time away from my wife and kids and be playing at it.”
For Mickey, there is the extra incentive to give his boys the start in life that he never had. One such decision was to send them to the private day school Oakhill in Whalley.
“People think I’m loaded because of the boxing, but that’s not true. It’s pretty tight. I’ve been boxing 10 years now and we sacrifice a lot. We don’t really go out for meals, don’t go out drinking. My wife is often on her own looking after the kids, whilst I’m at the gym. We want to give them the best future they can have and if boxing will help do that then I’ll keep fighting as long as I can.”
Mickey says he had one important father figure in his life, his grandfather, Walt, who was taken ill just before Mickey was about to defend his Light Heavyweight Central Area title belt: “Going into that fight I kind of knew. So, there was no way I was going to lose. That win was for him. I managed to go see him in hospital and tell him that I’d won even though I had a big black eye. He knew I was a champion before he died,” he adds poignantly.
Mic key credits his team of Head Coach Alex Matvienko along with Phil Robinson and Tom McNeil for their hard work in preparing him for success and of course, those sponsors who backed him in the early days, such as June Winfield of Winfield’s Outdoor, who are never forgotten.
Now with a title and a successful defence he’s hoping to attract more sponsors. They will be vital if he is to step up and challenge for a national belt. n

BONE BROTH
Packed with nutrients, bone broth is making a significant comeback as a simple, healthy superfood
It’s hard to think of a food that is super-healthy, packed with nutrients, warming and totally delicious. Well, bone broth is becoming increasingly popular in terms of nutrition, ethics and in hard times, it’s economical too.
The broth is made out of animal bones –something consumers and supermarkets have in recent years tended to dismiss, but there’s one place in the Ribble Valley that has been advocating this nose-to-tail consumer philosophy for many years.
Ian O’Reilly and Emma Robinson of Gazegill Organics at Rimington are true believers that all parts of the animal should be used: “We are selling more mixed stock bones, beef, lamb, chicken and marrow bone than ever.
“Our organic bones are in high demand such is their extraordinary quality –an essential for anyone searching for an
abundance of vitamins, minerals and trace elements,” says Ian.
Gazegill has been farmed by the Robinson family for almost 500 years and Ian and Emma have looked to the past to influence how they farm today. Their animals feed on rich hay meadows, which have a direct impact on their produce.
down to make a delicious broth with other bones. All bones have a slightly different taste. When they are boiled slowly, they release gelatine that sets in the pan as it cools. It’s so dense and full of nutrients,” explains Ian.
“Warmed up as a cup of broth, used to make gravy or to add taste to other dishes, it’s simply delicious!”
Gazegill Organics now sell a quarter of a ton of bones every week to restaurants and private consumers.
“A lot of our customers are very health conscious,” agree Ian and Emma. “They read up and find out about the benefits of broth –it’s a very nutrient-dense product.”
Bone broth is a rich, nutritious food that contains protein, collagen and minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium and phosphorus and it is believed to improve our bone and joint health, promote weight loss and improve hair, skin and nails.
“Bone broth is a traditional concept that has returned. It’s uncanny that people are buying chicken feet again – boiling them
As well as selling animal bones and marrow bones for consumers to make their own broth, Gazegill also retails ready-made organic bone broth too.
“Any broth tends to be good for you, and it’s super tasty too!”
WARMED UP AS A CUP OF BROTH, USED TO MAKE GRAVY OR TO ADD TASTE TO OTHER DISHES, IT’S SIMPLY DELICIOUS!
Gazegill has also experienced a noticeable increase in the sale of offal too: “Chicken feet and pig’s trotters have a really high level of gelatine, they are really popular with our customers.
“Ox liver has stayed in our ‘top 10’ in terms of sales for a long time – heart too is also popular,” add Ian and Emma, who make their own five per cent fat mincemeat featuring 10 per cent heart, 10 per cent liver and 80 per cent minced beef as well as producing their own beef and offal burgers.
“The mince is delicious and again, packed with nutrients. Used just as you would normal mince, it is perfect for getting children to eat offal – as they don’t even know they are eating it!”
Gazegill has regular customers who buy grass-fed marrow bones: “Our customer base is from a wide demographic – from single parent families to those with lots of disposable income – we have even had orders from a leading Manchester City player!
“The concept of bone broth has animal welfare and ethics at its core,” adds Ian. “When we send out our Gazegill newsletter whenever we talk about nature and animal welfare it tends to engage people.”
Nose-to-tail consumerism has seen a huge resurgence among world renowned chefs as well as home cooks, who are reluctant to waste any part of the animal, especially in hard times: “It is about respecting the animal. It is amazing, from ox cheeks to pig cheeks, we have been advocating this way of eating for many years,” says Emma.
Ian adds: “All the things that some of the best supermarkets don’t seem to want, like ox tail, we can’t get enough of! People are becoming much more aware of what they eat and what they buy.” n

GAZEGILL BROTH RECIPE
Ingredients:
1-2 kg marrow middles
1 chicken carcass (use left over from a Sunday roast – zero waste)
Mixed veg – any combination of these
1 medium onion 1 large carrot 1 leek 1 chives 1 celery Salt and black pepper
1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar Water
Take your marrows and place in a covered roasting tray and roast at 180-200˚C for an hour (you can use a spare shelf in the oven when cooking your roast chicken dinner or air fry them). Roasting the bones gets all the flavour from them.
Don’t forget to deglaze the roasting tray and use this liquid. Store in the fridge until ready to use.
Take the bones, chicken carcass and all the other ingredients and place in a large stock pan or slow cooker and cover with water.
TIP: Use leftover veg water, this has a lot of goodness in it already.
Timings are roughly the same for hob and slow cooker.
Simmer bones (don’t let them boil or reduce too much) for 24 hours. If you do not want to cook overnight, cool and store in the fridge until you put them on the next day.
TIP: If you have, a pressure cooker is ideal and reduces cooking time by three hours.
Pass the cooked broth through a fine mesh sieve and place in jars. You can freeze these and use them as required.
TIP: For a deeper flavor add two tablespoons of soy sauce or coconut aminos, one cup roughly chopped mushrooms and two tablespoons of tomato paste – this creates a richer flavour.
Heat and season to taste – Maggi liquid seasoning is very good for this. Enjoy!
OUTSTANDING TALENT…
the interior décor will reflect this, as Bob explains: “I have always looked to develop my own style of cooking. I do like to change things around a bit.
“The Rum Fox will be a mix of traditional and contemporary – on the menu there will be classics and light bites for the locals to pop in for a pie and a pint.
“But there will also be a seasonal menu that changes every month reflecting the local produce to keep things nice and fresh and there will be a taster menu too.”
Anew kid on the block will soon be joining the region’s stellar gastronomic line-up. The Rum Fox at Grindleton is headed up by chef patron Bob Geldeard, who took over
the inn two years ago in order to breathe new life into this small village community and to showcase his outstanding culinary talent to an audience further afield.
The modern British menu along with
The interior of the pub, the former Buck Inn which had been closed for many years, has been totally re-modelled – the traditional ‘pie and a pint’ element designed to captivate the local market, has wood panelling, oak beams, a huge fireplace with log-burner and a feature quartz-topped bar.
Looking to attract a wider audience, there will be a private dining area to seat 10 while the restaurant has a modern open plan kitchen giving it a vibrant, contemporary ambience. Wherever you choose to dine, the seasonal, taster and classic pub menus will be available for you to enjoy!
An outdoor terrace with glass partitions and a roaring fire, will have a louvred roof creating a courtyard effect that will be perfect throughout the seasons: “It has fantastic views over Pendle Hill. It really is very different,” says Bob, who spent a year at the world-renowned Vue de Monde in Melbourne, Australia.
Closer to home he has worked at the Higher Buck Waddington and spent seven years at the Duke of York, Grindleton –just opposite his new Rum Fox venture. Showing their delight at the prospect of the inn re-opening soon, villagers have posted enthusiastic messages on social media.
With bookings being taken from the end of January, it is hoped the pub will open in February. n

I HAVE ALWAYS LOOKED TO DEVELOP MY OWN STYLE OF COOKING. I DO LIKE TO CHANGE THINGS AROUND A BIT
beginning of the week – more innovation and support don’t you think?
The pub is increasingly being chosen for a variety of celebrations, anniversaries and wakes – if you’re planning an event then a call to Becky will no doubt result in a series of pre-set menus or an exciting bespoke set of choices to help make your celebration just perfect. The versatility of the room, coupled with stellar service, makes this an ideal choice for anyone looking for help or making special memories for their loved ones.
Becky is very excited to confirm that full planning permission has now been granted to develop the dilapidated Keepers Cottage into a stylish boutique hotel with opening planned for late 2023. The bravery, commitment and hard work by both Becky and Jamie needs to be both applauded and supported – it promises to be an exciting
SHOW YOUR SUPPORT
Becky wanted to start this month’s article by wishing everyone a ‘Happy New Year’ and to thank them for their support throughout 2022. In many ways it’s been an excellent year for the burgeoning reputation for great food and service at the Black Bull, which has helped cement their position at the very top of the Ribble Valley food scene.
As we move into the new year, a time that is naturally quieter for hospitality, much has been made of the tough times ahead and news of the sad closures of many long-established pubs and restaurants. I was therefore curious to understand how Becky plans to overcome these concerns and drive the business forward.
As many of our regular readers know I have described Becky in many ways – let me add two more to that list – innovative and hard working.
addition to the accommodation options in the Ribble Valley and will no doubt offer the same levels of style and service as their beloved Black Bull. I’ve no doubt that everyone is fully committed to the cause.
There is a first-class team spirit both front of house and in the kitchen and as customers we’ve seen first hand how they go the extra mile. I recently had Sunday lunch with my family including my two-year-old grandson. What a delightful experience – the team recognised our time limitations and fussed over little Charlie and helped make the whole meal enjoyable for us all. The innovative kids menu was a big hit and mum and dad had a rare roast dinner, cooked of course to perfection. The Bull excels on this versatility, leaving everyone with a big smile on their face and a full tummy.
January and February will see the return of the great value two and three-course menus at £20 and £25 respectively. This comprehensive menu is a mix of Bull classics and some lighter options to tempt customers to book mid-week and enjoy a hearty portion of great food cooked to perfection and served with a beaming smile. The first of these innovations include a mid-week version of the now famous Sunday roast – a huge Yorkshire pudding filled with beef and gravy and all the trimmings, which I believe will be very popular. Becky is also keen to support her fellow hospitality workers and being one of the few Ribble Valley pubs to be open seven days, she is encouraging those in the industry to enjoy the delights of the Bull on their days off, usually at the
Despite all this innovation and hard work, Becky and the team need your support so, if you can – please visit in January or February and you’ll be made to feel most welcome. n
CELEBRATION TIME!
For the past four decades Gibbon Bridge has been one of the region’s most popular destinations for very special celebrations
Celebrations – we all look forward to them and it’s always good to know that you’re in safe and reliable hands when you book a venue.
Families, friends and couples who book a celebration at Gibbon Bridge have often been there on numerous occasions. It’s very much a venue that is used by multiple generations. Couples who have married there, return to celebrate wedding anniversaries, christenings and in turn the next generation continue the family tradition of celebrating at Gibbon Bridge.
says Pauline Smith, a long-standing, senior member of the Gibbon Bridge team.
The hotel, which also features luxury bedrooms and suites, has been operating for four decades under the trailblazing leadership of hotelier Janet Simpson, who has created ultimately flexible spaces in which guests can enjoy dining in the restaurant, private dining in the orangery or delightful outdoor spaces in the grounds.
LET’S DO LUNCH!
If you’re planning a more informal celebration there are heated pergolas in the gardens of Gibbon Bridge, which can offer al fresco serving platters – it’s an ideal set-up for young families.
IF YOU’RE PLANNING A MORE INFORMAL CELEBRATION THERE ARE HEATED PERGOLAS IN THE STUNNING GROUNDS OF GIBBON BRIDGE
If you are thinking of arranging a celebration, formal or informal and of any size, give Gibbon Bridge a call and a senior member of the team will be delighted to show you around and explain menu options.
“We have couples celebrating their silver wedding and golden wedding anniversaries as well as birthdays and family occasions.
“Many people feel like they are part of Gibbon Bridge – they marry here, have christening parties here, then the next generation bring back their own children,”
As we go into the New Year Gibbon Bridge Hotel is back open for lunch seven days a week. Known as one of the best-value lunches in the region, this destination restaurant will serve lunches from 12 noon to 1.30pm – guests are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy an aperitif beforehand, overlooking the beautiful gardens and grounds. GOOD MOOD FOOD
Last year I qualified as a personal trainer and I’m now more conscious about what I eat and the effects it has on my body. It’s not just about putting on weight, the food we eat can change our lifestyle, both good and bad. If you’re reaching for the sweet, sugary and starchy foods in large quantities, these foods can affect our blood sugar levels. They are only a temporary fix to how we feel and once our energy levels drop again, this can cause mood swings, irritability and tiredness.
nuts, carrots and hummus, Greek yoghurt or two small squares of dark chocolate, around 70 per cent cacao and drink plenty of water. You’ll find your energy levels will become more balanced throughout the day, particularly later, when we get that mid-afternoon slump.
Eating processed foods with a high level of salt and sugar on a regular basis has been known to affect concentration. If you are regularly low on focus, concentration and energy, look at foods with high levels of B vitamins, such as dairy products, eggs, fish, meat, poultry soy beans and pulses. B vitamins are needed to help maintain healthy nerves and to produce the important neurotransmitters that help with concentration, mood and appetite. Deficiency in some B vitamins are linked to some sort of decline in mental or emotional state: depression, fatigue memory loss and confusion.

Antioxidants are also an important group of nutrients for healing the gut wall. Foods such as avocado, kale, peppers, sweet potatoes and watercress should be added to your diet.

For those struggling to sleep, magnesium is the calming mineral which can help. Don’t eat processed foods or foods rich in sugar too close to bedtime. These will only give you an energy rush and you’ll find it hard to switch off. A lack of magnesium can be directly linked to difficulty going and staying asleep. HOW MISCHIEF & MAGIC IS MADE
and it was here that she discovered the delights of the surrounding countryside.
“I had pretty much been an urbanite as I had lived in central Manchester. But when I moved to Lancaster, my husband and I were driving through the Forest of Bowland and were blown away by the beautiful countryside.
family life, so we found a house with a little summer house in the garden, which became my studio.”
Having travelled the world, speaking of her love of ‘playful design’ Selina and Martin put down roots in the Ribble Valley and Selina continued to work as an illustrator, which led to her current business creating educational toys and signage in natural wood.
An academic who delivered design-led lectures throughout the US and Europe discovered the Forest of Bowland and went on to set up a Ribble Valley business that is a resounding international success.
Eco-designer Selina Ellis-Gray, also known as Dr Hellion after naming her award-winning business Hellion Toys, says: “Hellion is an old-fashioned name for a mischievous child or rascal. When I was young, I was always called ‘trouble’ as I was always pushing the boundaries.”
Selina, studied for a degree, a Masters and then a PhD (hence the ‘Doctor’ Hellion title) in design technology at Lancaster University,
Before we knew it, we had moved to Grindleton! I love it over here. We have views of Pendle Hill and it is just so stunning – we never take it for granted,” adds Selina.
Married to Martin, who works in digital marketing and with whom she has a six-year-old son, Selina explains: “I wanted to find a way of working that fitted around
“I thought, ‘why not create these things that I’m drawing’? I love visual storytelling. When I was at university, they had a laser cutter and a 3D printer and I had was always meddling! So, I decided to get some tools in my studio and make the characters in my drawings,” recalls Selina, who loves to take inspiration from nature and local folklore.
The first wooden character she crafted was the ‘Noble Rabbit’ from her Enchanted

Forest collection: “The rabbit has a key place in folklore,” she says.
Cutting out her characters on band saws and hand painting them, Selina creates simple educational toys that are packaged in recyclable cardboard, each coming with their own backstory.
Since starting Hellion, Selina’s educational toys have been sent all over the UK and exported to Italy, Spain and the Netherlands –helping youngsters understand letters, numbers and colours.
In 2020 Selina and Martin took studio space at Backridge Barn in the countryside surrounding Waddington, enabling them to start diversifying.
Promoting Hellion through social media platforms, Selina films herself making the wooden toys and has developed a significant following on Instagram.
Her eco-credentials are emphasised by her sourcing locally wherever she can: “We source our wood locally from Clitheroe and other parts of Lancashire and our boxes come from Accrington. We like to support other local businesses,” says Selina, whose work has recently been showcased in Manchester Art Gallery as an example of good, sustainable design with a low carbon footprint.
Hellion has also won the Let Toys be Toys Award three years in succession, an
acknowledgement of her gender-neutral and eco-friendly designs.
Working with reclaimed timber and poplar for the toys, Selina adds: “All our materials have to be lab tested so we can produce the end toy. Poplar has a beautiful grain. However, it tends to be quite knotty, so turning it to create the toy can sometimes be quite difficult.”
Contributing to Hellion’s eco-credentials, Martin has also created local signage from restored old slate roof tiles, which were then etched, and he also made Champion Bowland Awards from ash wood.
“We avoid acrylics and plastics at all cost,” says Selina. “The paints I use are as ecofriendly as they can be and are totally safe for children.
“We re-use and recycle as much as possible. Our ethos is that we need to consider how we look at the world and we all need to do our bit.”
Her heritage style designs are simple and as well as her educational toys, Selina has
been asked to design custom-built furniture for nursery children and signage for other local businesses.
She has also worked collaboratively with the Forest of Bowland’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) team creating a beautiful illustration for a Pendle Hill Story Map and has created illustrative signage at Whalley’s Spring Wood.
“With the toys I make, I love that the children understand how we interact with nature, the importance of it and the importance of sustainability. We need to be connected to nature and the environment and at Hellion we are totally committed to making things that are functional, practical and informative –as well as being made ethically.” n
GOOD READ
Molyneux curls up with a good book to review a latest best seller
BETTY
Tiffany McDaniel
‘A girl comes of age against the knife. She must learn to bear its blade. To be cut. To bleed. To scar over and still, somehow, be beautiful and with good enough knees to take the sponge to the kitchen floor every Saturday.’
It’s with these bold and inventive few lines that Tiffany McDaniel launches us into a coming-of-age story like no other.
Betty Carpenter is born in a bathtub in 1954 to a white mother and a Cherokee father, and unlike her siblings, it’s her father’s skin, eyes and hair that she’s born with. As a result, when the family move to a supposedly cursed house in a small town called Breathed, rooted at the foothills of the Ohio Appalachians, racial slurs are an everyday part of Betty’s life. But in reality, the schoolyard bullies are the least of her worries.
With a mother so smothered by her demons that she seems incapable of bearing their weight any longer, a sister forced to withstand well-concealed abuse within the family home, and a young brother who tortures himself night and day with fictitious illnesses and plagues of the body and mind, Betty’s father becomes her saviour and sanctuary. Holding fast to the Cherokee values and beliefs that run in his blood, Landon Carpenter feeds Betty stories that capture the beauty and magic of nature and it is with this, combined with Betty’s own ability to reclaim her trauma in her writing, that she is sustained.
Other reviewers have claimed to feel consumed by this book and on reflection, there really isn’t any other word for it. As a story that is fuelled by resilience and filled with sentimentality, poetry and a host of brutal truths, Betty is vivid, lucid and a novel that’s sure to stay with you for a long time. It’s a novel that bites and scratches – at times it’s uplifting and inspirational, at others it hits hard and your world will be changed because of it.
In this respect, Betty is a novel built around binaries – happiness and despair, light and dark, youth and old age. Where there is beauty in the natural world, there’s also brutality and in exposing traumas of the past, it raises questions about where the future can realistically lead.
Betty offers both an engaging and a challenging read. It’s a story about the bad cards life can deal and the patterns those hands can form in families. Addressing issues of abuse head-on, it asks, unflinchingly, to what extent our parents’ trauma ultimately becomes our own. Balancing this out is a persistent focus on the power and strength of women. Women as homemakers, as healers, as strength, charisma and descendants of Mother Earth. It’s a story about sisters, daughters, mothers – the complexity of these relationships and the familial bond.
Betty does something that only great writing can – it gently breaks open your heart and exposes the pain and the warmth that resides there. Beyond its plot, themes and messaging, there’s magic to be found in its language. McDaniel’s prose is stunning. There’s beauty and poetry in every line, every expression, every sentiment – so much so that you’ll wish you wrote it. Betty offers a story and main character that linger long in the subconscious. McDaniel’s world is a difficult one to leave behind and Betty is a book I’ll be forcing on all of my friends for the foreseeable. n
VISUAL ART & MUSIC
Longridge Gallery starts 2023 exploring the close relationship between two great creative outlets, visual art and music
Acommon element that visual art and music share is their power to evoke an emotional response.
Artists and musicians create works that not only unlock emotions, but also alter one’s mood, trigger memories and act as a source of comfort and inspiration.
At Longridge Gallery our latest collections embrace the powers of both art forms in striking imagery which will enliven wall spaces.
BEN JEFFREY
Ben Jeffrey’s musical images really emphasise the character of his subjects. He lays paint on the canvas in multiple layers, each adding depth and texture. Ben’s clever use of metallic leaf encourages the portrait to jump off the substrate. Historic and present day musical icons feature in Ben’s latest collection, from
LINDA CHARLES
Linda Charles’ sell out Pulp re-imagined collections have highlighted her dexterity with a paintbrush, where she combines her love of the imagery of the pulp paperback books of the 40s, 50s and 60s with a back catalogue of famous hits, artists and lyrics. She had the idea of combining elements of classic songs and artists with the look and feel of old paperback books when she came across a box of vintage books in the attic:
SCOTT TETLOW
Scott Tetlow’s approach to his art is as visually different to Linda Charles as you can imagine. Scott’s references to understanding the lines of his work bear a close resemblance to something a fine lyricist might say: “I have to learn and understand the lines before I can make them work. It has taken years of practice, of feeling like I’m walking through a maze, making mistakes, going down the wrong road and learning whether to turn

left or right. I’ve had to practice and practice to be able to create a piece in one go, it’s almost like doing it in one breath. Every single line on each of my drawings is inspired by a living object, the result being that every line has the energy of a living thing.”
Scott’s imagery perfectly encapsulates the artist’s personality. From Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust to Hendrix’s Purple Haze, each image is guaranteed to brighten any wall. n
PROPERTY PREDICTIONS
As we go into the new year, Ribble Valley estate agents have their say on how they think the property market will look in 2023
The property market in 2023 is hard to predict, but what happens to interest rates will be key to the success of the market. Demand is still high for property with prices achieving all-time highs due to the lack of new homes coming to the market. We are expecting prices and interest rates to stabilise
throughout 2023 and the market to return to pre-Covid activity, thus meaning a buoyant but slightly less erratic approach from purchasers and sellers alike.
The rental sector is still seeing massive increases in demand and rent achieved with a severe shortage of rental properties on the market, we expect to see
rents still increasing throughout 2023 as demand is still at unprecedented levels.
Well, the vultures are certainly circling the housing market –what with mortgage rates rising to 6%, a dramatic rise in yields on government bonds and a general feeling of malaise throughout the country. But is the gloom justified? It would appear that interest rates aren’t going to rise as most experts feared and, if inflation can be brought under control soon,
mortgage rates should peak and fall again quickly.
So, whilst we face a tough winter on many levels, the Ribble Valley housing market has usually defied ‘crash’ or ‘correction’ predictions and, with the continuing imbalance between demand and supply, things may not be quite as bad the ‘experts’ tell us.
We are still experiencing good
demand for quality properties at sensible prices and, particularly if you are looking for your dream family home in which to settle for the medium term, it’s still a good time to move.
Paul Keenan Director Keenans keenans-estateagents.co.uk John Atherton Managing Director Athertons athertons-uk.comAs 2022 drew to a close we saw a busy 12 months, although in the latter quarter, economic uncertainty steadied the property markets from the dizzy heights of around 12 months ago. This may feel uncomfortable for some, however the majority of buyers and sellers are enjoying the ability to have more time to make considered decisions.
This steadying of the market has allowed vendors concerned that they wouldn’t have time to find their onward purchase, now feel able to bring their property to the market without being under pressure to find their next move. This means that the number of properties available on the market is starting to increase. We have also started to
see the time from the property being under offer to completion reduce in some transactions, which is positive and solicitors are starting to get on top of the backlog post-Covid.
Hannah Towers Agency Partner Armitstead Barnett abarnett.co.uk
The property market for 2023 is looking quite different from the one we’ve seen since we returned to the office in May 2020, following lockdown. A drop in buyers paying vastly over the asking price for properties is to be expected, as the spike we saw last year was unsustainable in the long term. While buyer demand remains strong, increase in the cost of living and energy
Homebuyers have become wary over the past few weeks due to the increase in interest rates. However, this may be short lived. Mortgage rates are now on track to fall back to 4% in the ‘not too distant future’, brokers have said, following successive cuts to fixed rates made by lenders in recent weeks.
Recently, the average five-year
prices together with interest rate rises, are impacting on the amount that buyers are prepared to pay. Instructing a good, honest agent, with your best interest at the forefront, will be more important than ever. This means they will give you a true property valuation, based on local knowledge to maximise the price you can achieve in the current market. With greater
fixed mortgage rate fell below 6% for the first time in seven weeks and lenders have been cutting both their fixed and tracker mortgage rates. It is highly likely that the days of cheap money are over with what some may call a fair rate of 4% to 5% being the new norm. House price growth stands at 8.1% year on year driven by the strength of demand, sales agreed
economic stability, that will hopefully come with the latest changes in government, the market should recover well through 2023.
Jo-Anne Blow Director Stones Young stoneyoung.co.uk
during the last six months and an ongoing shortage of supply. The most likely outcome for 2023 is that we see a fall in mortgage rates towards 4%.
Gavin Hilton Director Hilton & Horsfall hilton-horsfall.co.uk
Looking forward to 2023 we expect that the market may start the year at a more sedate pace than in recent times. The Bank of England has recently raised interest rates for the eighth consecutive time, as it responds to continued inflation. For the last 13 years interest rates and inflation have been ultra-low and it is likely that mortgage rates of 5% will be the new normal.
Sales are still transacting, with estimated sales volumes for 2022 in the region of 1.2 million, significantly higher than the pre-
pandemic average of just over 900,000 (Dataloft, HMRC, five years 2015-2019).
Demand levels in the market have been unusually high since the end of the pandemic and are in effect returning to more normal levels. As the market has repeatedly seen, people will continue to move, but buyers will no doubt be increasingly focused on what they can afford and the cost of a mortgage. While many forecasters are predicting price corrections in the market, this needs to be considered in the context of
the unsustainable growth since 2020. Correct market pricing by agents is critical as the leeway between marketing price and ‘real’ price becomes more apparent.
Given the substantial price rises seen in the market over the past two years, there is only a low risk of negative equity for the vast majority of purchasers.

MOVE OR IMPROVE?
Many homeowners are often faced with the dilemma of whether it’s better to renovate, decorate and improve their existing home or take the plunge and move to another property
Your home has everything you like but over time, and often as your family grows the choice to stay and expand or fly to a different nest becomes a decision you need to make, and there are of course advantages and disadvantages to consider for both.
A well thought out renovation is generally kinder to your bank balance than moving to a new home. Improvements can be done one room at a time, allowing you to freely control the project to your available budget.
Of course, if you want to remodel most of your existing home then it probably isn’t worth the investment, and if your ultimate goal is to downsize then a new house is clearly the right way to go.
Planning is key if you decide to renovate as costs can vary dramatically and it’s
important to check that the work you are doing will eventually add value to your property, as you may still want to sell at some point in the future.
Before deciding to renovate or extend you need to know whether your property is even suitable for such a project. There may be planning permission to consider, especially if you want to add an extension
or make external changes. This can be complex, and it is always best to seek professional advice – a property surveyor could help avoid costly mistakes.
Buying a new home usually means that an estate agent will do a lot of the hard work for you – both promoting and selling your house whilst also helping you find your new dream home. And buying a new build often means that everything will be built in from the outset and be in touch with modern design.
Location is another important aspect to consider. Your current home may be in a perfect place and close to family and good schools, but the ideal location isn’t always easy to find. If you can’t find a new property with the same amenities then maybe alterations to your existing home is the best choice for you. Alternatively, if you want to move to a new location then even if renovating would be cheaper, a new house may be a better option.
There are lots of decisions to make and things to consider – but there is also a whole range of expert advice out there to help make sure you make the right choice for you and your family. n
BEFORE DECIDING TO RENOVATE OR EXTEND YOU NEED TO KNOW WHETHER YOUR PROPERTY IS EVEN SUITABLE FOR SUCH A PROJECT
