YORK RACING CALENDAR WELL UNDERWAY
YORK CITY FC Nothing beats the races on a hot sunny day, so we’ll be praying for good weather at the 40th Macmillan Charity Day on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th June - the month’s only meet at York racecourse. Over the years the charity day has raised in excess of £4,500,000 for good causes and stirred up some fantastic racing excitement. Just by attending the day, racegoers will be doing their bit to raise money for cancer related charities in York. Whether you’re dressing to impress and sipping champagne from the terraces, or cheering on the gee-gees from the lawn as you tuck into your own picnic, it is always guaranteed to be a great day out. What’s more, on the Saturday evening, England’s first match of the FIFA World Cup against USA (KO 7:30pm) will be shown live on the big screen at the racecourse so the fun looks set to continue long after the racing action. 6
For the second year running, York City FC suffered Wembley heartache as they lost in the Blue Square Premier play-off final to Oxford United 3-1 last month. The team’s heroic 2009/2010 seasonlong efforts came down to 90 minutes of football on Sunday 16th May that would decide their fate for next season. In the end, their dream of promotion to the Football League after a sixyear absence proved elusive as the Minstermen fell short on the day in front of a crowd of 42,669. Regardless of the result, the club can be proud of their efforts over the last season as the Bootham Crescent faithful have been treated to some scintillating football including 37 goals from leading goalscorer Richard Brodie. Everybody involved with York City FC and the fans will be hoping for automatic promotion next season, which commences in August. FOOTBALL FAN DATES FOR THE DIARY... ENGLAND’S GROUP GAMES USA AT 7.30pm ON JUNE 12, ALGERIA AT 7.30pm ON JUNE 18, AND SLOVENIA AT 3pm ON JUNE 23.
2010 GENERAL ELECTION
Residents across the region took to the ballet boxes on Thursday May 6th in record numbers. In York, there was a new constituency in this General Election, after boundary review split the old City of York constituency into York Central and York Outer. Local constituency results were as follows and the elected candidates have now taken office: York Central: Hugh Bailey (Labour)
with 39.96% of votes York Outer: Julian Sturdy
(Conservative) with 42.99% Thirsk & Malton: delayed until 27th May Selby & Ainsty: Nigel Adams
(Conservative) with 49.42% Yorkshire East: Greg Knight
(Conservative) with 47.47% Harrogate & Knarsborough: Andrew
Jones (Conservative) with 45.74% Scarborough & Whitby: Robert
Goodwill (Conservative) with 42.83% Little more than a week after the election, on Saturday 15 May, 100+ campaigners took to the streets of York in a peaceful protest for a fairer political system. Everybody who attended was encouraged to wear purple to keep the movement neutral of party affiliations. The new coalition Government has announced there is to be a referendum on using the Alternative Vote system for Parliamentary elections.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON A CAR FREE YORK?
YORK IN CARFREE CITIES CONFERENCE
York will play host to the Towards Carfree Cities IX conference from 28 June to 1 July. The four-day event is the annual highlight in the world’s Carfree Network calendar, and will bring together leading academics, campaigners and organisations to debate and inspire action towards alternatives to car dependence and planning bias. York residents and school groups are encouraged to attend the open day on Tuesday 29th June, which involves keynote presentations, workshops, excursions, and a film night at City Screen on Coney Street. More information at www.worldcarfree.net/conference. LET US KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS ON ANY STORIES IN THIS ISSUE, AND TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEWS ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE.

LOVE BEING LOCAL ...
YORK EXPLORE OPENS ITS DOORS
A LITERARY REVOLUTION IS TAKING PLACE We say goodbye to stuffy old libraries as they lose their stigma and emerge a new technolit hybrid... You’ll see.
TEA TO TOMES On May 24th, York Explore opened its doors for the first time after an ambitious transformation to bring the former York Library into the 21st century. The new library learning centre has emerged from the 7-month renovation with every element of its design delivering a more enjoyable experience for its visitors. A lot of thought has clearly gone into making best use of the space and making reading and learning there as appetising as possible. We’re particularly fond of the fact that you can now take your cup of hot chocolate from the café anywhere on the lower floor and nestle down with a book.
AMAZING ARCHIVES Gone are the partitions, silence signs, and old fashioned décor. Instead the revived centre boasts 20,000 new books housed in beautifully light and open space, a café with chill out area, free wifi and dedicated IT area, a media studio and learning rooms. As well as improved disabled amenities, self-service machines, and a well-stocked children’s space. What’s more, over 800 years worth of archived material will now be open access leaving you free to explore the history of York in new depths.
FUNDING FROM FRIENDS OF THE CITY It was much more than a £250,000 grant from Aviva that made the transformation possible, as the financial services brand played an active role in the project and remains committed to delivering more financial capability workshops in the local community and through the library as part of their excellent “Learn and Thrive” initiative. York Explore, is open 7 days a week, with late opening on Monday to Thursday 8

If you care about the environment you have to agree that we had the best selection of candidates ever in York at the recent election. Our MP Hugh Bayley is conscientious, aware of environmental issues, and very concerned about overseas aid. Liberal Democrat candidate Christian Vassey has an excellent record, was the driving force behind setting up York’s recycling centres, and if anything is “greener” than the Green Party candidate himself, Andy Chase. Susan Wade-Weeks once voted Green, and described herself as the “greenest” Tory candidate in the UK. And whatever your views on immigration, the economy, and other issues that were discussed before the election, from the point of view of the environment things are looking hopeful. Less than 24 hours into their historic coalition, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have joined the 10:10 campaign – which was started last year with the aim of cutting our carbon emissions by 10% by 10 October 2010. As I write, 65,000 individuals, 2,600 businesses, 1,600 schools and colleges and 1,500 other organisations have joined. In York these include Bootham School, St Peter’s School, the University of York, the City of York Council, and Shared Earth.
WITH JEREMY PIERCY
The consequences of the Government committing themselves to this target are huge – if they can reduce carbon emissions by 10% within a year, it will be the equivalent of taking 200,000 cars off the road, saving 600,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. They are already talking about everything from scrapping fridges to turning lights off overnight in some of the country’s biggest landmark buildings. This commitment shows the government is leading by example, and it will have an immediate effect in influencing others – overseas as well as in Britain. But what I like most about 10:10 is that it asks us as individuals – and the organisations and businesses we work for – to tackle global warming ourselves. We’re all responsible, and 10:10 says, ‘let’s get on and do whatever we can, rather than wait till laws are passed, or expect the government to do it all for us’.
Jeremy Piercy started York’s first fair trade shop, Shared Earth, in 1986. It now has ten branches and is the UK’s largest fair trade retailer.

As a hybrid between racing and mountain bikes, town bikes feature an upright seat and handlebar position that is great for those worried about back problems. A little known fact is that they’re also faster than mountain bikes. With this is mind, many people are switching to town bikes as their popularity takes off.
Of course, mountain bikes have their purpose, and serve those wanting to go off-road extremely well, but sometimes the extra features can be wasted on those making From Dawes we have the traditional “Dawes everyday journeys on the road. WITH THE POPULARITY OF LAST YEAR’S RUN, THE ORGANISERS HAVE UPPED THE CAPACITY TO ACCOMMODATE YOU EAGER LOT...
The York 10K, now in its second year, will again still start and finish at York Racecourse and take runners into the city centre, along the historic streets, past the stunning York Minster and back along the riverside. Speaking about last year’s event Mike Tomlinson said: “Last year’s York 10K was a tremendous success and we have been working hard with City of York Council to create a course which will allow us to meet the incredible demand for entries.
York 10K 2009’s happy participants
“We had such wonderful feedback from those who took part last year – from runners, spectators and volunteers - and this year is now going to be bigger and better. Most importantly having more places available will undoubtedly mean more money is raised for charity and that is what the York 10K is all about.” As with all Run For All events, the event is open to people of all abilities whether they prefer to run, walk, wheel or jog and all event profits go to charity.
Join Live&Love this year for Haven
22
Profits for the York 10K will be shared by the Jane Tomlinson Appeal and its partner charities which will again be COCO, Macmillan, Martin House and Sparks. Runners are, however, free to raise sponsorship for any charity they choose. Live&Love are running in support of Breast Cancer Haven (Yorkshire).
LIVE&LOVE WILL BE RUNNING THE YORK 10K IN SUPPORT OF BREAST CANCER HAVEN (YORKSHIRE). AND WE WANT YOU TO JOIN US...
Breast Cancer Haven provides the Haven programme free of charge to anyone affected by breast cancer. The programme includes counselling, complementary therapies, emotional support and practical information to meet the physical and emotional needs of people affected by breast cancer. In Yorkshire alone, nearly 5,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.
Some of the past charity events for Haven
Victoria Frazer, a mother of two from York, was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2008 (age 38) and needed surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
There are currently 3 Havens; in London, Hereford and now Leeds, which opened in October 2008. During this time, the Yorkshire Haven (in Leeds) has cared for 640 Visitors, over 60 of who live in the York area.
01132847829
Victoria said “The Haven programme is what you need it to be – bespoke and tailor-made. It makes you feel like an individual, even though you know you are just one of many thousands of women going through breast cancer. The drugs and medical treatment are the physical cure, but Breast Cancer Haven gives you the the emotional and mental support. It basically does what it says on the tin - a haven for Visitors to feel at ease, build up their confidence and feel well again”.

We thought we’d try something a little different for our “cover price” charity. As you may or may not know, instead of charging a cover price for the magazine we have previously encouraged our readers to donate what they think the magazine is worth to a local charity. Great in theory, but we want to take a more active approach and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to show we really mean business! So, from this issue on, we’ll now be partnering with a local charity that has a fundraising event in the month ahead and taking part in the challenge ourselves in a bid to raise more money.

THIS MONTH WE’VE SIGNED UP TO INTERNATIONAL SERVICE’S 3-PEAK CHALLENGE...
THE PLAN... This month we’ve signed up to International Service’s 3-peak challenge – a 24 mile walk over Yorkshire’s 3 highest peaks in under 12 hours on Saturday 26th June. We’re told that the views are spectacular and it’s bound to be an incredibly rewarding personal experience.
International Service is an international development charity based in York that works with some of the world’s most vulnerable communities in Latin America, West Africa and the Middle East, supporting them in practical ways to combat poverty and oppression.
Human rights are at the heart of what they do, believing that being denied basic rights is what keeps people in poverty. Their goal is to help people understand and exercise their rights so they can change or guide their lives for the better.
WHY NOT JOIN US? It is free to enter. Simply visit www.international service.org.uk to download a registration form, and email it back to them by Friday 18th June. If you can’t make it, or if walking really isn’t your thing, then we are raising money for International Service on our Just Giving page (www.justgiving.co.uk/lovethepeaks)
We’ve already heard from a few friends and readers who will be taking part so it is bound to be a great experience amongst good people. The hike starts at Horton-inRibblesdale and takes in Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Inglebrough, finishing back at Horton. If there are enough people signed up from York, we’ll look to organise transport to take us all there at as little cost each as possible.

Q&A REASONS WHY YOU MIGHT CONSIDER NOT HAVING A WEDDING VIDEO... “Wedding videos? Aren’t they a bit cheesy?” You’re probably thinking of badly edited two hour epics with wobbly cameras and poor sound. You are, aren’t you? Actually, if you call on York’s artistic community this needn’t be the case. For example, Sheena and Adam have had short films shown at festivals worldwide, and Frank and Adam both run www.i-heart-y.co.uk - so we approach our wedding films with a lot more flair and artistic intent than is traditionally expected.
“Wedding video = holiday photos = I’d rather not watch other people’s!” Ask your friends if they would like to look at your holiday photos or watch your wedding video and they’re likely to get wedged in the door trying to escape; we take real pride in not conforming to that stereotype. Adam always likes to think of it like this: “We make wedding videos that your friends won’t hate you for making them sit through!”
“We’re trying to cut back on our costs.”
“It’s still a bit embarrassing though, isn’t it?”
If you pick filmmakers who know the importance of being unobtrusive, even the shyest people will be surprised at how quickly they forget the cameras are there. And you can rest assured that they’ll only use the nicest shots of you in the edit. Plus there are a lot of things that happen behind the scenes that a bride and groom usually miss out on, and a good camera crew will be there to capture those moments for you.
By all means be creative; often it’s the simple weddings with a DIY feel that have the most charm. However, whether your marriage or civil ceremony takes place in a cathedral or a forest clearing it will be something you have planned for months (or years!) and it often flies by in a blur. It’s the film and the photos that will keep those memories for you. Ask the filmmakers for some testimonials and you should be able to tell if their previous customers felt like it was money well spent.

YOUR SPECIAL DAY Generally we have a small crew with at least two of the latest HD cameras filming the morning preparations, the ceremony, reception, speeches, and through to the first dance. We then edit this into a 30-45 minute film with an hour of extras on DVD or Blu Ray. Our prices start from £500, with this particular package costing £1200. We can also film interviews and movie-style trailers in the run up to the big day. Once the film is finished, we upload it to our website with a password so you can share it with as many of your friends as you like at no extra cost.
We still have dates free this summer, so it’s not too late to make a lastminute booking! We’re offering 10% off our prices to Live&Love readers to celebrate our 5th birthday! You can contact us for more details, check our website, or Frank can come round for a cup of tea and a chat to show you some examples of previous weddings without any obligation. The video is fantastic and we really, really love it. Excellent camera work, music, and the editing would make Thelma Powell proud. Thank you so much and if you ever need a glowing testimonial from happy clients, just let us know. And we’ll be spreading the good word of Special Day Films to anyone who will listen.

His daughter Jennifer asked him why she couldn’t see the picture straight away. Five years later, the first instant film cameras were on sale. Even with modern digital cameras, you have to get the bloomin pictures printed, but polaroids took just a couple of minutes to turn from black to wondercolour pictures (albeit with a bit of iffy colour here and there if the films weren’t stored right).

Sadly polaroid folded a few years back so all the film got super expensive as people like me with a few cameras to feed bought up all the stock we could get our hands on. Luckily we also managed to get our hands on a few professional polaroid cameras, used for large format architectural work and movie lighting test shots, and we use these now for personal projects and gallery shows.

The fabulous news is that as so many photography enthusiasts loved the forma t, the crazy cameras and the iffy colours, a few like min ded folk got together to form “The Impossible Project” an d bought an old Polaroid factory in the Netherlands and started reformulating the film chemistry, These new films are now on sale (ww w. the-impossible-project.co m) and the best bit is that the new films aren’t deadly co lour accurate, may have spo ts on the images, need carefu l handling and some even fade back to black.

WE ASKED MARNIE RICHARDS TO GIVE US HER TAKE ON THE TREND OF ‘COCKTAILS AND COLERIDGE’
WORDS Marnie Richards
Gok Wan, the cast of Wicked, and Shoreditch; what could they possibly have in common? I’ll give you a clue – it’s not their dress sense. In fact, they are all helping contribute towards the current literary revival. Recently, the iPad was unveiled along with a new and extensive iTunes library, leading the way for literature to become technologically relevant. In terms of online opportunities, the success of Txt Lit (www.txtlit.co.uk) shows the appeal of creative writing in a modern way. It holds a unique monthly contest, challenging contestants to write a story within 160 characters – the length of an SMS text. Clever, right? 60
However, e-books and ridiculously short stories aside, physical books are rapidly increasing in popularity. In popular media, this is reflected in the Channel 4 programme, TV Book Club, aired at the end of January. The premise of the show involves Gok Wan, along with other celebrities including Jo Brand, discussing and reviewing a different book each week. The term ‘celebrity’ may be a tad tenuous here, but nonetheless, with the debut episode reaching an impressive daytime peak average audience of around 350,000 viewers, this televised book club highlights a new popular interest in reading, and the beginning of a literary resurgence for this generation.
IT PAYS TO BE POETIC It’s not, however, simply the reading aspect of literature that has proved popular so far – creative writing is making a comeback. The importance of introducing creative and imaginative outlets early on can be seen in the launch of the Young Writers’ Award. Former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo, with the support of the musical Wicked, is launching this contest as a re-embodiment of the WH Smith Young Writers’ Competition. Clearly the relevance of creative writing is being placed in the foreground – and, if you need any more convincing, well-known previous winners of this contest include Helena Bonham Carter and Kate Beckinsale; clearly proof that it pays to be poetic. If this seems a little childish, then there are more sophisticated literary trends also on the rise, providing a more adult approach to literature. The most successful of these combine a social night out with a passion for reading – and a dash of alcohol for good measure, of course. An example of these modern literary endeavours is the book-reading night held at Shoreditch House Literary Salon in
east London – a place which claims that ‘not since the Marquis de Sade has reading been this sexy.’ Cocktails and Coleridge – sounds like the making of a great night to me. The future of book clubs may lie in these ‘literary salons’ – showing that literature can evolve in a way that makes it both approachable and enjoyable, and not simply for an educational environment... Thank goodness. So, what are you waiting for? All you have to do is pick up a pen, or even get on your phone, in the case of Txt Lit. And, if writing doesn’t quite appeal, then just grab a book from the new library, or jump on the train and go along to a trendy night in Shoreditch to enjoy a sneaky glass of wine (or four..) along with some exclusive readings. The worst that can happen is writers’ block, or a disappointing ending – and it’s worth it.

Pack your bags and join the girls on one of their most frivolous and entertaining adventures to date: an exotic holiday to Abu Dhabi! While the Manhattan girlfriends travel miles away from all they know, the adorably familiar cast means the film is sure to retain its recognisable charm.

Director Michael Winterbottom examines the boundaries between desire and abuse in his adaptation of the 1952 novel by Jim Thompson. Jessica Alba and Kate Hudson’s performances contrast brilliantly with Casey Affleck’s sinister portrayal of a killer in the guise of a small town sheriff. It is a film which will make you flinch in disgust yet hold your gaze, a remarkable investigation of morality and corruption. 73

LOVE TO SHARE CREATIVE THINKING In addition to their commercial work in the design field, this month’s Creative Brief sponsors, Mat and Gary of LazenbyBrown have been delivering talks and workshops in Schools, Universities and Colleges around the region for some time now. Their mission is to see creativity given equal status to numeracy and literacy within the National Curriculum, particularly in secondary schools. This interest in education was formalised when LazenbyBrown were selected to become Creative Fellows of York St John University, the project was funded by CETL and saw the design duo working for over 6 months with fine art students on a project entitled ‘Public Service Announcement’. Since then they have both been commissioned by Creative Partnerships to work in schools in Hull and Goole researching and developing creativity in the curriculum, both for the staff and students. “We’ve witnessed some amazing developments in the schools we’re working with and the National Curriculum is really
Mat & Gary in the studio, photography by Jim Poyner starting to properly address the skills gap around creativity, enterprise and self-belief. At a school in Hull we worked with recently they have implemented actual ‘Creative Thinking’ lessons into their schools day - imagine that; double Creative Thinking on a friday!” said Mat. We asked them how they achieve the balance between the experimental, exploratory education work and their more commercial design practice, “for us there isn’t any tension between the two, as designers we see a lot of similarity between creativity in education and creativity in business and we find working in both environments has a really positive effect on our creative thinking as a whole - ultimately our clients all benefit from that” Gary commented.

Last month, on 21st May, more than 20 Aviva staff from York slept rough on the streets for an evening to highlight the issue of runaway children. They were joined by 400 colleagues at simultaneous sleep outs held at Aviva offices across the country as part of their Street to School programme, which is designed to help vulnerable children get off the streets and back into education.
Armed with little more than sleeping bags, cardboard mats, and a determination to make a difference, all involved braved it through the night to add their voice to that of the Railway Children charity to help address the plight of the 100,000 children in Britain who run away from home or care every year. It is often a case of out of sight, out of mind, as runaway children keep a low profile and as a result the real extent of the issue is hidden from view for most of us. The harrowing truth is that many street children face abuse and exploitation on the streets. The great work of Railway Children, in the UK and beyond, is therefore critical to early intervention and a positive outcome. Terina Keene, Railway Children’s chief executive said: “Our partnership with Aviva will make a huge difference to children living on the streets in the UK. Our recent research ‘Off the Radar’ reveals that UK children run away from home for many reasons, just as they do in developing countries. Many of them are never reported missing and they will sleep on the streets because they are too afraid to go home. In order for us to help our most vulnerable children, it is critical that we raise awareness of their needs and their existence here in the UK.” We think you’ll agree it is an extremely worth cause so well done to everybody involved in the sleep outs. 82
