R E T T E L S ’ EDITOR John Ruskin wasn’t half right. When love and skill are combined beautiful things can happen and that couldn’t be truer this month with The York Food and Drink Festival. We’ve packed this issue full of food, fun, and frolicks for you to be getting on with until next month. Make sure you visit one of the many great events at the Festival that we are lucky enough to have right on our doorstep, and support the Yorkshire food heroes that make it all possible. In keeping with the gourmet theme, we’ve put together a little recipe book for the perfect wedding with a few nudges here and there to make sure that your big day is as special as can be. You bring the love, let the professionals bring the skill, and as Mr Ruskin so wisely said... a masterpiece! So, until next time, embrace autumn before it turns into winter and we’ll be back this time next month bringing you more of what York has to offer.

Calls for new incentive in Claudia search
Ice Factor Skating Rink Homeless for 2010 Many a Live&Love reader has added their voice to the campaign to save Ice Factor’s skating rink but even with winter fast approaching it sadly still remains homeless.
There are fresh calls to increase the reward fund for missing Claudia Lawrence fivefold as the original amount of £10,000 put up by Crimestoppers has not been enough to tempt vital witnesses. Claudia’s father Peter Lawrence along with family friend and spokesperson Martin Dales are surprised that more information hasn’t been forthcoming and now believe a larger incentive is needed.
Despite overwhelming public support to keep the annual attraction at the Eye of York by the entrance to Castle Musuem, Court officials refuse to budge, insisting the noise created by skaters causes too much disruption during cases. So far all compromise solutions put forward have been rejected by the Courts, and with an agreement looking increasingly unlikely it seems a new home will have to be found. As one of York’s most popular attractions with 45,000 skaters last Christmas, we hope common sense prevails.
6
Claudia was 35 when she disappeared in March last year and she still remains at the forefront of our thoughts. It is for this reason that we have decided to donate our back cover to the appeal. If you have information that could help the investigation, however insignificant it might seem, phone North Yorkshire Police on 0845 60 60 247 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
York Flooded With Goodwill And Kindness The whole city was smiling ear to ear on Friday 13th August as celebrations took place for Spontaneous Acts of Kindness Day.
Redevelopment For City’s De Grey Rooms York Theatre Royal has been given the green light by the City of York Council’s planning committee to expand into the vacant De Grey Rooms next door. The Grade-II listed building is now set to be transformed from its previous home of the Tourist Information Centre into a centre for school and youth theatre workshops. The costume hire department The redeveloped building will also create further space for a costumemaking workshop, costume storage and costume hire which is currently housed in Walmgate.
The initiative dreamed up by York’s Volunteer Centre saw a number of fun activities across the city aimed at spreading positive vibes starting with a mass Tai Chi class on Parliament Street, followed by a whole host of, gift making, skill sharing, clothes swapping and much, more. Alongside these goodwill ‘tasters’ local voluntary organisations were on hand to promote the hundreds of voluntary opportunities York boasts. We want to hear from our readers that took part in the day. Share your experience on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ liveandloveyork
Employees of the theatre have been fundraising over recent months to pay for a wheelchair lift to improve accessibility for the whole community to the workshops.

LOVE BEING LOCAL ... GOOD WORK PEOPLE OF YORK
It’s official. You’re awesome.
Hooray! York has been named the friendliest place to live in the UK beating Cambridge, Edinburgh and Newcastle. After questioning 3,000 people in the UK about the friendliness of their community and neighbourhoods, York triumphed in top spot. Pat on the backs to us!
Because of the sociable chaps we are, according to poll a typical day in York households consists of neighbourly chats when getting the milk off the doorstep and greeting the postman by his first name, then heading down to the local for a friendly pint with the landlord. Cliche... maybe. Being friendly and smiling has been widely linked to good health and living longer, so I guess us ‘Yorkies’ will be immortal. So, be proud of the warm natured city we live in, and welcome the millions of visitors who come to York every year with a wide friendly smile
BUT WE KNEW ALL ALONG...
The icing on the cake was provided by Polly in an email to Live&Love Towers...

I just wanted to say how friendly and welcoming the shop assistants are in York. Having moved here from Berkshire I can enjoy shopping again, and in the ‘young’ shops too - places I was clearly not welcome in the Thames Valley. I’ve had queries answered in Orange, helpful advice in JB sports, girly clothes chat in Mango, and welcoming smiles everywhere - and considering I travel into York on my over 60s bus pass I think this is a great credit to the young people of York. Thank you to you all.

E T A L O C O H C Thousands of people are employed in the manufacture of confectionery in York, as it’s home to Quaker chocolatiers, Rowntrees, and Terry’s. This year the city is to mark that heritage with a celebration of chocolate. The York Food Festival is bringing high quality artisan chocolate centre stage, running a ‘Chocolate Day’ in the Market, daily chocolate demonstrations at 5pm in the Festival market place and the Festival launch event will be a chocolate show in the historic Guildhall. Love, Love, Love this beige ‘Kate’ jumpsuit from Reiss, perfect for a town wedding – I’ve teamed with skyscraper heels from Moda in Pelle and think that chunky jewellery would finish this city chic look off.
THE WEDDING GUEST with Clare Brownlee
Never have I known a year for so many engagements and weddings, but as far as I can tell, the bride has it relatively easy with her made to measure, one off gown! ... Meanwhile, us mere guests are left fighting to find the perfect outfit which needs to fulfil a whole other criteria; not too short, not too long, not too casual, not too much like a night on the town, not white, not black and most of all, different from what your 20 friends (also invited) will be wearing…. Oh, and all at a reasonable price! So, I have once again scoured York’s high street for you, and here are some great choices...
I couldn’t resist these fabulous wide leg floaty trousers from Topshop – they come in dove grey and cream and are the perfect alternative to a dress, if you don’t fancy getting your pins out. Balance out the width, with a slim fitting top like this one from River Island, add lots of pearls, your hair in a top knot and Carrie Bradshaw would be proud!
This Preistleys vintage floral dress from Sarah Coggles ticks all the right boxes, and I’ve given it a 50’s twist by adding some beautiful claret coloured suede pumps from LK Bennett that bring the print alive. Just head down to Purple Haze for a shiny Kelly bag to top this look off.

THE WEDDING GUEST with Clare Brownlee Well boys, the obligatory suit and shirt are a good bet for your wedding guest outfit, but that’s no excuse to be lazy. Pay attention to the details and you’ll be noticed for all the right reasons. •Tweak the trend and dapper the day’s style by buttoning up that top button. •Don’t you dare unfold those jeans from that pile for the day •Always, always, always iron your clothes and polish your shoes •Yes, a splash of coloured accessories will brighten your outfit up, but wild colors and prints are a definite NO.
Wear slim fitting, on-trend tailored trousers that took into the ankle at perfect height like these ones from ASOS. They won’t look out of place in the office either, so bonus points for the trousers!
Not a summer hue yet not a autumnal shade, it’s both! Guaranteeing you multiple wears throughout the year. For weddings this classic neat-fitting shirt from Sarah Coggles definitely ticks the box. Head to Mullen and Mullen for a vast array of colours to take you into winter.
Heading into chillier months, obviously dark shades are appropriate as well as wool. Suits and blazers with fitted trousers, or perhaps a cashmere v-neck sweater with a shirt and tie combination would fit the bill. To create a more edgy approach to your outfit add on accessories, no not necklaces and rings, I’m talking shiny cufflinks, coloursplashed scarves and those ‘grandfathers’ timeless sunglasses (if your so lucky to have a sneak peak of sunshine).
Hello little splatter of colour onto a grey array, these quirky cute miniature mini cufflinks from Paul Smith can add a touch of class to an otherwise lackluster outfit.

Upgrade your Hairdresser w
It’s a question that has long perplexed men… what it is the difference between a £15 haircut and one twice the price?
e spoke to high-end men’s hairdressing salon Cube for men and a panel of their clientele to find the answer. In short, in seems most comparisons are redundant. Truth be told, the old purveyors of a good haircut for around the £10-15 mark are a rare breed. Sure a quick in-and-out job is probably ok when you’re at school but as you enter the big bad world of work where first impressions count it pays to invest in yourself. Enter a new generation of ultra chic male hairdressers offering a more holistic grooming experience. We’re told the haircut itself is only part of the jigsaw. Let’s start with the ambience and hospitality. For a few pounds extra, you can swap long queues and intimidating chats with inexperienced stylists who insist on enforcing their trademark short-back-and-sides cut on your poor head, and instead be enjoying a cold beverage or hot drink in the lounge area of a
penthouse inspired salon before a full consultation for the new you undertaken by somebody who takes real pride in what they do. For those of us longing for some escapism from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, this kind of chilled-out experience is almost priceless. Then comes the cut itself, which is more craftsmanship than conveyor belt. You’ll receive a detoxifying shampoo and scalp massage before having full access to their extensive repertoire of styles, from recreating a latest trend to reviving a timeless classic, that are

consistently executed to their high standards by a senior stylist - all of whom have at least 10 years experience. Next the complementary services came under the spotlight. At Cube you have an extensive menu of grooming treatments and essentials to choose from, including traditional wet shaves, colouring, thinning hair solutions, and styling advice. It seems the environment in which these treatments are available is equally important as Cube regulars feel comfortable in this “home-from-home”.
So, the old maxim appears to be true, you really do get what you pay for.

“I have loved every moment of my first year at St Peter’s School Sixth Form. I think one of the reasons for this was the thrill I got from receiving a Bursary to study my A Levels here – which for me felt like I had won the lottery! Studying just the subjects I want to study is a real treat and I find myself looking forward to every lesson. The lessons themselves are more challenging, but the teachers treat you differently and more like an equal. The change of learning style from being spoon fed to having to think for yourself is really helping me to
broaden my horizons and I am already thinking of applying to Universities I would have never even considered. Another huge advantage of studying at St Peter’s is the access to plenty of extra-curricular activities. From high quality music and drama performances and outstanding art and Sport departments there is always plenty to try. I feel very fortunate to have another year here and I would recommend anyone to apply for a bursary to come here too.” - A St Peter’s Bursary Pupil

OF FUN A DAY IN DIRECTOR RAILWAY THE LIFE... NATIONAL MUSEUM 10am Arrive at work I arrive at the National Railway Museum and go to see the Director Steve Davies in his office. He has a cup of coffee (yuk!) while I drink my juice (yum!). He tells me what’s been happening at the Museum since my last visit. I have to go to school most of the time so I can only visit the Museum in the school holidays or at weekends.
11am Next I head out into the Museum to have a look around. While I’m there I have my photo taken a lot! Ever since I started my job as Director of Fun, people always want to take my photo for newspapers or film me for TV. It’s like I’m famous now!
12noon
Lunch time – yum yum!
1pm Now the important work starts. I go on a steam ride in the South Yard to check that they are fun enough. I chat to the driver and then hop on board. It’s great to be behind a real steam train, they make so much noise. The steam ride passed the test – definitely lots of fun! 2pm Next I go and test out the fun inside. One of my favourite things to do is go into the cab of one of the locos with one of the Museum’s Explainers – they know EVERYTHING about trains! 3pm
My last job of the day is to write back to some of the people who send me messages on the Museum’s website. I have my very own webpage – www.nrm.org.uk/ directoroffun - where people can send me their ideas and I get to choose the best ones to write back to!
4pm Time to go over the road to York Railway Station and get my train home after another fun-filled day. WANT TO SHARE YOUR ‘DAY IN THE LIFE’? EMAIL US.

R E P SUHERO “Dianne is a very prominent figure in York. Up until recently, she was Vice Chancellor of York St John University and spent her already busy time promoting educational opportunity, ensuring it fit well with the needs of modern communities.” I WOULD LIKE TO NOMINATE DIANNE WILLCOCKS CBE AS MY LOCAL HERO
INTRO DUCING This month’s Local Super Hero is Dianna Willcocks CBE
“Instead of retiring after her 11 year position as Vice Chancellor at York St John University, Dianne has started her own leadership consultancy here in York and after having the privilege of her sound wisdom for 2 years as my advisor for Creative and IT & Digital York, I would heartily recommend her skills to anyone. In the city of York alone, she is currently on the board of the Yorkshire Film Archive, she chairs the York Theatre Royal Trust and is also the trustee for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. She takes on so much, and is genuinely interested in committing her time to the City of York and enriching it in so many ways possible. She gets my vote for the ‘local super hero’ because of her passion and dedication to others.”

On our doorstep is an inspirational Community Interest Company that seeks to encourage cycling, in all its varieties, for leisure, transport, health, happiness and the environment.
Other initiatives in their impressive repertoire. include roadshows enabling you to try-out a selection of their 500 cycles, active education for primary and secondary schools, bike-loan programmes for workplaces, cycle holidays, and attention-grabbing Megabikes. They’ve been rather busy spreading the good word that cycling is fun! They are also set to launch a shop at their headquarters that will stock an extensive range of bicycles (from the everyday to Megabikes and special needs cycles) for both sale and hire. So, when you catch the cycle bug, which you will, head over to the friendly team and sort yourself out with two wheels!
Based on Hospital Fields Road and run by an enthusiastic team, they have worked alongside local authorities, health promotion services, businesses, schools, universities and the leisure industry to spread the joys and benefits of cycling. Get Cycling specialise in creating fun and safe environments for people of all ages to try-out bikes as well as schemes to make everyday cycling for adults a reality.

Here at Live&Love York magazine we like to support a local good cause, so one little thing we ask of you, our beautiful readers, is that you read about our ‘Cover Price’ charity in the hope that their story will encourage you to voluntarily donate an amount you would have been willing to pay for this issue.
When a child is diagnosed with cancer, lives are turned upside down, not just for the child but the parents too. Getting well again can be a challenging journey, physically and emotionally. Offering help by supporting those children and families affected, are Candlelighters, a charity based in Yorkshire founded and run by parents of children that have had or who have cancer. Understanding the trauma and the care needed, friendly staff and counselors are available in the ‘home away from home’. Candlelighters also fund new treatments for the children. They are currently trying to raise funds of £500,000 to move to a new location and transfer wards so that the families can be more comfortable and they can offer a better level of care.
We hope you’ll be able to join us for Candlelighters’ very first Candlelighters Day at Roundhay Park, Leeds, on 26 September, an opportunity for supporters to come together and help us raise vital funds as well as awareness of the vital work we do for children with cancer and their families across Yorkshire.

Their admirable 25 Things to do Before you’re 100 will raise £25,000 for the White Stuff Foundation, for children’s charities across the UK.
We were originally introduced to Ivy & Lil, 81 and 86 respectively, about six months ago as clothing company White Stuff’s longest standing employees. Despite recently reaching 25 years service with White Stuff, the two seamstresses have no intention of retiring any time soon, and are instead completing their lifelong dreams before they reach their 100th birthday.
As we write this they’re preparing to demolish a building and drive a super car! We’re don’t think there’s any shame in admitting we’re more than a little bit jealous and we suspect you are too.
Good luck ladies!
