YORK KNITTING THE CITY WALLS PINK
BONFIRE NIGHT WITH A DIFFERENCE How does a bonfire night free of muddy boots and craning necks sound this year? York Minster is giving 90 people, aged five or above, the opportunity to watch a dramatic display of fireworks from its central tower. As it will arguably provide the most spectacular views of fireworks within York, tickets will get snapped up quickly so make sure you act fast and don’t miss out! There are three trips, once every hour from 6.30pm on 5th November. Tickets are available from the York Minster box office at boxoffice.yorkminster.org or by phone on 0844 939 0015. Join in with the once in a lifetime fun and do your bit to help turn the Historic walls of York pink for charity! This Breast Cancer initiative aims to knit enough scarves to cover every inch of the wall: 2,832 scarves measuring 150cm by 15cm. People have joined the quest from far and wide in order to cover the two and a half mile length wall to raise awareness for Cancer research. Anybody who wants to take part in this unique challenge can pick up a knitting kit from Ramshambles, the Shambles, for just £5. Plus ‘Down the Line’ meets the first Monday of every month at St Denys’ Church Hall, Walmgate.

YORK FIRE STATION POTENTIAL MOVE
NRM GREAT HALL REVAMPED It has been announced that the National Railway Museum will be closing its Great Hall for an entire year as it undergoes a £21m redevelopment. Trains will be relocated as it becomes NRM+, offering new multimedia and multi-sensory displays that promise to enhance the visitor’s experience. The rest of the museum will remain open and it looks as if NRM are as keen as ever to keep events and exhibitions alive while the work is in progress. Work on NRM+ is due to begin in 2012 so pay them a visit now! IMAGE: www.nrm.org.uk
Discussions are currently underway concerning a potential move for the Clifford Street Fire Station. So far there are three possible new locations being considered, including the old coach park on Kent Street, and on a site by the Barbican. Others believe that the money would be better spent improving the existing fire station due to its good location and presumably lower cost. Presently the Ouse-side vicinity allows the fire service boat to be released quickly and efficiently. It also contains two engines, a turntable ladder, and a boat, in contrast to the smaller proposed new build. The debate continues. IMAGE: Howard Pulling on Flickr

LOVE BEING LOCAL ...
Saturday 11th December 11am to 6pm Sunday 12th December 11am to 3pm
You can feel Christmas in the air and there’s nothing quite like it. It’s a truly magical time when York comes to life. The Festival of Angels transforms some of York’s most unique streets into a winter wonderland filled with beautiful ice-sculptures.
The Quarter, better known as Swinegate, Back Swinegate, and Grape Lane, is home to the Christmas festival as it has been for the past 10 years. It’s a lovely story really, the local businesses organise the festival for the residents and tourists to say thank you for all their custom throughout the year, now that’s real Christmas spirit! The ice-sculptures are simply stunning and the perfect way to start your festive celebrations. Sip some deliciously hot mulled wine whilst snow flakes are sprinkled from overhead. It’s always a white Christmas at The Festival of Angels! Take some time to explore the streets with their eclectic shops and array of wonderful bars and restaurants. Why not make your visit even more memorable with some al fresco dining whilst enjoying the street entertainment.
Fancy meeting Santa? Well keep an eye out, because he’ll be taking time out of his busy schedule to visit the festival, then on Sunday you can follow the amazing Parade of Angels, led by the beautiful Golden Angel. www.facebook.com/liveandloveyork Tell us what you’ve been getting up to

Next on our recommendation list is the wonderful Angel. Run by accessories designer Kirstin Hodgson the shop is oozing character and innovative ideas. Alongside Kirsten’s own range of vintage French linen home accessories and gifts, sit lovely painted French mirrors and other decorative antiques, beautiful leather bags, sumptuous throws, wonderful scented candles, pretty hand printed cards, gorgeous velvet scarves and unusual mercury glass decorations.

Now after all this lovely exploration if your sweet tooth is crying out for some attention head down to Willy Wonker’s dream shop Sugar Mouse...
I am told KitandKaboodal is a very new shop and this might explain the excitement surrounding it. Nestled behind a gown shop is this wonderful boutique. Floor to ceiling in black (even the window frame) the chic interior is only backdrop to the amazing array of clothes. Some local designers and some party classics (Lipsy, Rare and Vila) mean this boutique has an outfit for every occasion.
The walls are laden with oldfashioned glass jars and the beautiful décor complements their eclectic mix of artisan chocolates such as Rococo’s delicious offerings, plus their very own Mollypops and Mama Doreen’s miniature cupcakes. The beautiful packaging and surroundings brings out the Charlie Bucket in everyone.
Now, heading back to the market square and slightly up the street you see The Olive Branch, the initial impact of this place is like stepping into a bygone age. The shop sells literally everything from Emma Bridgewater ceramics, beautiful textiles, jewelry and Raggy-tag baby goods. The classic village shop vibe to this wonderful building complements the modern, innovative pieces that the store holds in stock. Be sure to fully explore the many rooms, there are also exciting bits and pieces to appeal to any budget.
My final port of call was purely coincidental but nonetheless pleasing. Drawn in by the wonderful window Flowers By Design are a florist with a difference. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable and the pride taken in every bunch is exquisite. They specialise in occasion bouquets and arrangements so will happily adorn any Christmas banquet.
o... Easingwold is definitely worth a visit and if you fancy doing your Christmas shopping in beautiful festive, village surroundings then head over after work on the 1st of December for their late night Christmas shopping. Afterwards you can always nip into The Durham Ox at Crayke nearby for a cheeky winter warmer. 13

CONGRATULATIONS To Jason Steel, this month’s winner.
Jason Steel We love the decadence of Jason’s work and the allusion to dressing up at this time of year. “The decay of time and beauty is the driving principle behind Jason’s work. Each bear uses a complex narrative and layers of precious gems and antique fabrics to create a unique sculpture. Toy, jewel, friend? Only the viewer can decide.” steelwork100@hotmail.com

Finally the time has come to dig out the recipe for my Nan’s Sherry Fruit Cake and fill the house with such wonderful Christmassy smells. I love that this recipe has been passed down to me from my Mum, who inherited it from her Mum, my Nan. My Nan was wonderful. She could knit for Britain (a skill I’m hoping has been passed down to me, as I attempt to improve my own knitting), and her house was always warm and welcoming. She lived in a small cottage in Newent, Gloucestershire, and I remember my Uncle and my Dad having to stoop to get through the doorways inside. The kitchen (if memory serves me correctly) had a stone floor and always seemed dark, but always warm and with something delicious cooking on the stove. I distinctly remember the ceramic chicken which housed the eggs too! Though I don’t remember my Nan cooking the recipe I do remember my Mum cooking it. It would be a cold, dark autumn evening and my brother and I would be sat watching Blue Peter or Willo the Wisp and the smells of mixed spice and sherry would waft through to the livingroom. My Mum would always come in with the mixture to let us stir and make a wish; a tradition I have now continued with my eldest son. Stirring the mixture today, I think of my Nan, I think of my Mum, and I think of my family. Memories of the past and hopes for the future are stirred into the mix. I always put twelve cherries in; one for each month of the year to come. I look forward to the cakes I am making today becoming part of more Christmas’ traditions, and family memories.

CHOCOLATE & COFFEE TRUFFLE CUPS... INTENSELY CHOCOLATEY Break the chocolate into small chunks and tip into a bowl with the coffee and alcohol. Bring 250ml of the cream to the boil, then pour over the chocolate mixture and stir until the chocolate has melted and the mixture is smooth. Divide the mixture between 6 cups and stick in the fridge to set over night. Use pretty vintage china cups and always give the man the pink cup, he’ll love it! When you are ready to serve, whip the remaining cream with the sugar until it’s just set. Spoon the cream onto the chocolate cup and dust with the cocoa so it looks like a pretty little cappuccino. Mmmm yummy.
These make lovely little treats and are so easy so surprise a loved one today!

The Yorkshire Pantry has just opened its doors on High Petergate, so we dropped by to have a look and chat with owner Giles Bennett about his plans for the new store.
So, first things first – sum up The Yorkshire Pantry in a sentence for us.
OK…well, we’re a brand new shop selling the very best food and drink from exclusively Yorkshire producers.
And what sort of things does that entail?
Lots – products that Yorkshire’s famous for, of course, like Taylors of Harrogate’s teas and coffee, Pontefract Cakes, Farrah’s toffees and fudges, and Henderson’s Relish, but also a large number of smaller, artisan producers.
Such as…?
Where do I start? Chutneys, jams and sauces from Rosebud Preserves. Honey from apiaries in the Howardian Hills and the North York Moors. Cakes from the Harrogate Cake Company, apple juice from the Yorkshire Wolds, chilli jams from The Chilli Jam Man. Natural and flavoured rapeseed oils and salad dressings from Thixendale.

Anything special you’re planning for Christmas? We’re going to be introducing our “make up your own hamper” idea. Choose your size of hamper (small at £9.99, medium at £14.99 or large at £19.99) then buy what you want to go in it - we’ll then package it up and decorate it for you. That way you can create the perfect gift for someone, without having to make do with a hamper where they might like some of the things, but not others!
There is one thing in your shop that’s not from Yorkshire, no…? You? No, I’m from Kent, originally, via 10 years in London. That said, I’ve married a South Yorkshire woman, have a son who was born in West Yorkshire and now live in North Yorkshire – if that counts. And anyway, I’m not for sale!

We revealed in our last issue the news that York is to submit a bid to become officially recognised as a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts. If successful, York will become only the second City of Media Arts in the world – the other being Lyon. We’re incredibly lucky as a city to have so many great creative and cultural individuals, initiatives, and businesses on our doorstep. That said, in order to strengthen the bid the committee need your help! They are hoping to map the spread of arts, design and media in the city over the last five years, and how things are shaping up for the future. If you’re involved in the creative industries, either as a business or practitioner, please do your bit to help the bid and spend two minutes filling in their online survey at www.surveymonkey.com/s/ YGTW5DK. It really does take a few minutes, and no identifiable data will be shared without your consent. Once you’ve completed the survey, you will have the opportunity to get more involved in the bid itself and help bring it to life in the city in 2011.
64
Help York become a UNESCO City of Media Arts In the next issue we’ll be continuing to celebrate the bid in our pages and encouraging our lovely readers to get involved too. If you’d like to keep up to date with it’s progress and even be a part of it, then please email us at hello@loveyork.org

So, they are launching this new direction in style with the legendary Doug Binder opening their riff of new shows. His notorious artistic seduction of the likes of Lennon and McCartney whilst refusing to brand himself have made Binder an institution. He will be there in person on the opening night handing out his book. Doug Binder, Full Circle. 12th to the 7th of December.

Over the years the team at local swimming school Splish Splosh have helped countless parents introduce their babies to the water and deliver one of their most treasured and memorable experiences in the process. The idea of submerging a baby in water may sound unnerving, but underwater swimming with babies has never been so popular with parents.
LITTLE WATER BABIES The magical experience has been enjoyed for generations, enshrined on the cover of Nirvana’s album cover ‘Nevermind’, and how could we also forget the opening sequence to Tomorrow’s World? The baby is able to be immersed as the gag reflex isn’t developed until around 9 months; so under the guidance of a qualified instructor there is no fear of the little one swallowing any water.
If you feel like putting on your swimming costume and joining the many parents that are enjoying the many benefits of swimming that will last your child a lifetime (including underwater), then please contact the York based swimming school on 08442641102 or visit their website.
With its numerous health benefits, including improving motor skills, the introduction to a healthy lifestyle and aiding sleep patterns, the activity can provide many cherished moments that can last a lifetime. Splish Splosh Swimming School has already established itself as a leading provider of swimming lessons in quality, convenient locations across the region. With class sizes no larger than eight students per teacher, it offers a baby from 15lb the opportunity to take to the water with its parents.

PHILIP RHATZ LECTURE THEATRE, KING’S MANOR, YORK
WHAT ABOUT YOUR HOME...
Geoff and Kenny’s studio also carry out works to domestic properties for private clients in and around the York area, with owners wishing to replan, convert or extend their homes. Sometimes, even the simplest extension of modest size can make such an enormous difference to the occupier. And in these times of recession, homeowners are tending to choose to enhance their own properties rather than selling and upsizing. GHA have the experience and foresight to respect the key historic elements whilst not being frightened to adopt a bold, exciting and contemporary approach to achieve refreshing and welcoming results.
The balance between old and new (or ‘modern intervention’ as it is often called) is one which intrigues the firm. Typically, at the King’s Manor - the University of York’s base for archaeological and historic studies - the interiors have been adapted to serve the educational needs which have changed over time. One of the latest small projects recently completed is the upgrading and remodeling of the Philip Rhatz lecture theatre.
York Eco Business Centre, Amy Johnson Way, Clifton Moor, York, YO30 4AG 01904 692334
The space has been given new seating, lighting and ceilings, coupled with an overall bright, fresh appearance, whilst still retaining the original distinctive Victorian school room character. Both elements are distinct from each other, but the bold interventions will allow the room to function as a contemporary teaching space well into the 21st Century. www.holland-architects.co.uk

A lot of us are more inclined to spend, spend, spend but it’s as important as ever to tuck away a percentage of your income for the future. With interest rates currently low and inflation high, now’s a good time to look around for a better deal and return on your investments.

It’s all too easy to fritter away the cash in your current account and returns are often very low. With Christmas just around the corner and a number of options available, from different types of ISA to savings accounts and pensions, it’s time to start thinking about your New Year resolution. Spring cleaning your finances should be on your list.
The good news is that help is on hand.

So Many Options...
The maximum amount an individual can invest in an ISA each year has recently risen to £10,200. This means that most savers today do not need anything more complex than an ISA. However, the returns on cash ISAs are dismal when interest rates are as low as they are currently. Therefore, it’s important to look at the alternatives. If you’re coming into a lump sum such as a bonus, inheritance, or lottery win (we can all dream!) then it’s important to look beyond these more popular investment options. Whether you’re looking to save £1,000 or £100,000+ bright future can help.

hether York is your home or holiday destination, there is always a new way to explore the city and all it has to offer. Why not hop on two-wheels and let one of Cycling City York’s new guided cycle rides navigate you around?
There are now eight guides on offer (four of which are new for autumn) covering York in its full beauty. All of the guides are free of charge with something for everyone, from families to off-road mountain biking enthusiasts. Most include a stop-off midway for refreshments. A recent addition is the series of ‘Cycle Chic’ guided cycle rides. They’re the perfect solution for women who’d like to combine a little gentle exercise and socialising with a spot of retail therapy. The ‘Cycle Chic’ rides will be led by female leaders, with the first couple being a trip to the Designer Outlet in Fulford on Sunday November 7th and a visit to a Christmas Market on Sunday 5th December.
Copies of the new guided ride timetable are available from libraries, leisure centres and City of York Council reception points. You can also find details online at www.cyclingcityyork.org

Christmas is a magical time of year in which it’s so easy to get swept away by the celebrations, and forget that there are some people far less fortunate than ourselves. This also makes it a good time of year to give. For the Salvation army it’s much like any time of year in which they dedicate themselves to caring for others.
First and foremost the Salvation Army is part of the worldwide Christian Church which strongly believes in putting its faith into action. Their community programme is busy and varied, and today the York Salvation Army offer a Parent & Toddler Group (Monday), an Ofsted registered pre-school Playgroup (Tuesday, Thursday & Friday), Luncheon
Club (Monday & Thursday), ‘Creations’ – a children’s performing arts group each Wednesday evening along with other various special events throughout the year. Their Charity Shop which is attached to their building in Gillygate, is open Monday to Saturday and offers good quality, affordable clothing, books, bric-a-brac and much more.
visit www1.salvationarmy.org.uk to get involved with these local heroes and their ongoing project or simply show your support with a donation, be it money, food, or your time. 78
Their social care services are extensive and ever-growing. They offer Early Intervention, Prevention & Resettlement Services, Solid Foundations Tenancy Support, Advocacy Service, Community Support Link Scheme which offers a variety of support to customers with a learning disability and a Luncheon Club training scheme. During the last 6 months alone their Early Intervention and Prevention team alone have supported in access of 400 clients, many with drug related issues, alcohol problems, mental and physical health issues. On a daily basis food and clothing referrals are handled in ever increasing numbers.
This year again we would ask for help in supporting those within our community who are less fortunate than ourselves. Donations of food for Christmas hampers or new toys/gifts would be very much appreciated and more details can be obtained from the Salvation Army, Gillygate (01904 630470).
As Christmas approaches, the demand for support and help from the Salvation Army is ever increasing. Last Christmas saw a rise in the numbers of people asking for help and the expectation, given the current economic situation, is this will increase more this year. Christmas 2009 saw us providing 67 Christmas food hampers, Christmas Day lunch for approx 70 elderly and lonely people, and toys and gift parcels to 135 individuals. Recognising each individual and ensuring they receive not just one but several toys/gifts – that represents an enormous amount of provision which is only made possible through the generosity and support of the general public.

MR SANTA CLAUS
OF A DAY IN DEPARTMENT THE LIFE... PRESENTS... (LAPLAND BRANCH)
5am Arrive at work Wake up at 5am to the smell of Mrs Claus baking sugar plums, candy canes and chocolate chip cookies. Head to the stables to give the reindeers breakfast, carrots as standard. Apologise to Mrs Claus for traipsing reindeer poo in the carpet, so promise to shave after the big day. 6am Monday morning meeting with the elves to plan the day ahead. Monday is usually boys toys so the Elves get cracking on the ‘must haves’ for this year and I make a start on The List. 7am Sit down with my milk and mince pie and have a little look at whose been naughty or nice. It’s a pretty long list so takes around 360 days to get through it (it would take less time if I stopped checking my Facebook hourly). I’ve been waiting on an electronic database for The List from IT for about 12 years but apparently there’s a problem with the wifi... always some excuse. 11am Getting hungry now, a mince pie just isn’t enough for breakfast. Had the Health
and Safety Officer in to make sure conditions are safe and we are not using lead based paints. Elves have been working hard in the shop and added some new modifications to my sleigh. The younger Elves seem to think adding two stripes through the middle will make me go faster... we shall see.
2pm Personal trainer is in. I’m not getting stuck in a bloomin’ chimney this year. I’ve been informed that i shouldn’t rely on pastry based goods for a well rounded diet. I disagree. 2.05pm Cant.... take.... any... more. 5pm I’ve recovered. Gotten through some more of my list (and checked it twice). Elves are heading off after a hard days work. Time to get home to Mrs Claus’ amazing supper, and put my feet up for the Eastenders Christmas Special. Wonder if Grant Mitchell comes back again... he’s on my naughty list.
