HOW DO I DECIDE WHICH SHOWS I WANT TO SEE? Do you know what you like?

Fringe for free

Each year, hundreds of independent artists present daring, fun new work at the Fringe Festival. This year, those shows are listed alphabetically by genre (pages 67–99). Browse the pages for your favorite discipline and read about the varied works. If you’ve heard about a show or artist and you’re not sure about the discipline, consult the handy indexes, arranged alphabetically by show name (page 131) and artist name (page 133).

Party late into the night with free entertainment plus food and drink at the Festival Bar at FringeArts (page 32). During the day, check out free programming at the Fringe Festival Bookstore at Cherry Street Pier (pages 56 + 57) and FringeArts (pages 32 + 33)

Let us help you FringeArts has a team of curators who travel the world watching work by a wide range of performers and makers. FringeArts 140 North Columbus Boulevard 65 minutes

The B-Side: “Negro Folklore from Texas State Prisons,” A Record Album Interpretation is an original performance by The Wooster Group based on an LP of work songs, spirituals, and toasts recorded in 1964 in Texas’ thensegregated prison farms. Performers Eric Berryman, Jasper McGruder, and Philip Moore channel the inmates’ voices from the record via inear receivers and transmit the full album live. In between tracks, Berryman reads from the liner-notes and provides context from a book by Bruce Jackson, the folklorist who recorded the album. The voices of the live performers blend with and complement the voices on the record, creating a moving and intense theatrical experience. The B-Side is directed by Kate Valk and designed by Elizabeth LeCompte.

DANCE

Mariana Arteaga

ÚUMBAL

“I was obsessed with the idea of making a collective body visible, recovering the streets with the social power of dance, demanding the right of joy, the right to be happy together.” Mariana Arteaga

Winding through a South Philly neighborhood, Úumbal: Nomadic Choreography for Inhabitants is an ambulatory performance wholly created by the people of this city and enacted by residents representing its diverse population. Choreographer Mariana Arteaga and her local collaborators set up collection points in various neighborhoods to solicit dance steps from residents. Local volunteers helped mold these contributions into a communal performance that includes movement, choreography, and choreographic actions in public spaces along the streets, parks, and sidewalks of South Philadelphia. Arteaga developed Úumbal (Mayan for “balance”) in response to an incident in 2014, when the Mexican government repressed mass protests in the wake of the disappearance of forty-three students in Ayotzinapa, Mexico. If repression could be choreographed, she mused, so could freedom and joy. Join as a nomadic companion and participate in this joyful procession.

REALITY WINNER VERBATIM TRANSCRIPTION THEATER

Tina Satter / Half Straddle As the verbal dance between knife-sharp Reality and the FBI agents unfolds in Reality’s home and her autonomy shrinks before her eyes, a simmering real-life thriller emerges—with consequences that extend from the most personal to the totally political. Arrested and charged with leaking evidence of Russian interference in our election, Reality now sits in jail serving a record-breaking sentence. Reading about her fate, Tina Satter, artistic director of Obie-winning ensemble Half Straddle (In The Pony Palace/FOOTBALL, 2014 Fringe Festival; Ghost Rings, 2017 Fringe Festival), followed a link to the FBI transcript of the interrogation and was struck by the young woman’s humor, self-assuredness, and predicament. Half Straddle’s staging of the verbatim transcript—tinged with the company’s signature surreal style yet frighteningly visceral in its realism—lays bare the power dynamics, natural drama, and relevancy of a true story, still unfolding.

“A wonder of theater-making … a live documentary about young people searching for asylum as harrowing times and hostile environments overtake their lives.” DC Metro Theater Arts

How do we navigate our worlds? We build maps of our histories, our memories, and our futures. In 2016, theater director Kaneza Schaal and award-winning author for young people Christopher Myers flew to Munich, Germany, as 30,000 people were arriving in the city each day in the largest migration in recorded history. Listening to stories of young refugees they pondered how to create an artwork that places all of us in this historical moment.

Combining simple storytelling with interactive video technology (audiences shape the onstage video projections with their own cell phones), Cartography maps the perilous physical journeys and the confusing interior journeys of five young migrants as they discover what it means to leave home and begin a new life. Performed by a diverse company of actors from El Salvador, Syria, Lebanon, South Africa, and Rwanda, this is theater for our times, theater for all ages, theater at its most relevant.

FASE

FOUR MOVEMENTS TO THE MUSIC OF STEVE REICH

Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker / Rosas

Both the music and the dance start from the principle of phase shifting through tiny variations: movements that are initially perfectly synchronous gradually start slipping and sliding, resulting in an ingenious play of continuously changing forms and patterns. Premiered in 1982, Fase, Four Movements to the Music of Steve Reich laid the foundation for a groundbreaking choreographic career. Having always danced Fase herself, De Keersmaeker now passes her first performance piece on to two new dancers.

FRINGEARTS CURATED

Before she became an internationally acclaimed choreographer, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker was a young Belgian student moving to New York City with a music cassette in her travel pack. The deceptively simple repetitive compositions by American minimalist Steve Reich became the soundtrack and inspiration for a breakthrough choreographic work—three duets and one solo credited with creating a new vocabulary of movement for contemporary dance.

Two men stand side-by-side inside a locker room. The tension between them is palpable. This is theater, but there’s very little dialogue, just the sound of their bodies and the found noises of a portable radio. Instead, we are drawn into their primal language, a physical communication which intensifies throughout the show. Mining multiple expressive forms—dance, athletic competition, clowning, martial arts, acrobatics, body percussion, mime, cockfighting, and more—Un Poyo Rojo explores the range of possible relationships between individuals and probes the boundaries of our bodily and spiritual interactions. It’s a provocation, an invitation for us to laugh at ourselves, and, at the same time, to accept ourselves entirely.

A Mexican bar man. An Austrian sales rep. A trip to Baghdad. A modern-day magic potion. Unsettlingly uplifting cowboy dances. Creators Pavol Liska and Kelly Copper of Nature Theater of Oklahoma (named after the theater in Kafka’s novel Amerika) and internationally renowned Slovenian dance troupe EN-KNAP Group follow the American Dream from a Wild West saloon to the battlefields of Iraq. Part barn dance, part movie pitch, part comedy of manners, Pursuit of Happiness plays with language, movement, setting, and genre through an endlessly morphing folk tale of ultra-violent Western expansion, taking on the myth and legacy of the American Dream and its aspirational aftermath. LET ME DIE

THEATER

Joseph Keckler With the style of a rock star, the three-plus-octave voice of a classically trained bass-baritone, and a keen comic sensibility, Keckler brings his rich voice and one-of-a-kind vision to an absurd yet affecting world premiere. Featuring full-length arias and snippets of songs, Let Me Die combines death sequences drawn from the canon of classic opera with original narratives and music. This ensemble performance collage is at once a festive meditation, a strange ritual, and a morbid medley of epic proportions. Presented in partnership with Opera Philadelphia as part of Festival O19

Conversations swirl about opera’s demise. But just as death arias provide the emotional heart of classic opera, Joseph Keckler extols the enduring life and relevance of an artform purportedly in its death throes.

Much to Do, Much to Fix This is definitely an ad for the new show Much to Do, Much to Fix by John Cambridge. However, this is also definitely an opportunity (not to be squandered) to put anything we wanted on this page. As we sat here trying to figure out what to do, we remembered those awesome games that existed in magazines when we were all smaller and even more naïve. As Much to Do, Much to Fix is a Wings of Paper Theatre Company production, we felt like it would be OK to use the company logo in one of those, “spot the differences between the pictures” games. So get out that magnifying glass and good luck!

After we realized that we weren’t great at making those games, and especially after we saw how much room on the page was already gone, we figured it best to put at least a little bit of information about the 10,000 sq ft guided immersive set we built.

Despite the similarities in symbolism, this play has nothing to do with Pokémon. That’s a diagram of a birds-eye view of the set. The audience sits in the center. They spin while the show happens on the six sets around them. The story moves in sequence through the space, rotation after rotation. In a different reality, it might be interesting to use this space to talk about the story itself and entice you to come see it based on the merit of the narrative alone. But we’re really about out of room now so let’s not do that and instead be happy with the following anemic summary: it uses a world of gods and mortals to touch on issues surrounding electrical production, apathy, and love. Yikes! Ok, we’re out of room! More details can be found in other parts of this guide!

THE INDEPENDENT ARTIST

FESTIFUND Support Artists in the 2019 Fringe Festival

New this year, the Independent Artist FestiFund supports artists participating in the 2019 Fringe Festival. Producing their own performances, installations, and events comes at a cost for these hard-working independent creators. This scholarship fund aims to offset some of the costs for five artists chosen by an independent panel. Fundraising for the FestiFund will continue up until the Fringe Festival, with the total funds divided among the five recipients before the festival begins. Contact Fringe Festival Coordinator April Rose at April@FringeArts.com for more information. The Independent Artist FestiFund is a project of CultureTrust Greater Philadelphia

Brett Mapp: I love that for three weeks the city cares about arts and culture and wants to have a shared cultural experience. I love that I get to see international groups that I would otherwise never get a chance to see. I love that I get to see something that I will never see again. FringeArts: What do you like about being a FringeArts member?

FringeArts: How long have you been attending Fringe Festivals? Brett Mapp: From day one of the first festival in Philly. I’ve also been to festivals in NYC, DC, Toronto, and Montreal. FringeArts: How many shows do you see each year? Brett Mapp: I average 25–30 shows per festival. At my old job, I could take time off and see about 40 shows! FringeArts: What do you love about the Fringe Festival?

Brett Mapp: Everyone should be one. I love the discount on the shows throughout the year. It’s as if the Fringe Festival is not just in September since FringeArts moved to its location at Race and Columbus.

Save money, get priority access to tickets and seats, and enjoy year-round VIP treatment with a FringeArts Membership. See page 125 or visit FringeArts.com/membership.

GET INVOLVED Love the Fringe Festival and FringeArts? Get involved on a deeper level as a FringeArts volunteer or ambassador.

FringeArts volunteer

FringeArts ambassador

FringeArts: How long have you been volunteering for FringeArts?

FringeArts: How long have you been an ambassador for FringeArts?

Dennis Hallda: Twelve years. I have a T-shirt from every year, in every color of the rainbow!

Shoshana Lovett-Graff: Since the program began in October.

FringeArts: What do you like about the Fringe Festival?

FringeArts: What do you like about it?

Dennis Hallda: The originality, the talent, the great venues, the staff.

Shoshana Lovett-Graff: I am grateful to be able to share theater and performance with friends, neighbors, and strangers. I’ve provided tickets to coworkers, friends-of-friends, roommates, parents of neighbors, and more than one couple going on a first date. I love making connections between people and art, especially if they would not otherwise have access to it.

FringeArts: What do you like about volunteering for FringeArts? Dennis Hallda: I volunteer to keep up with what is going on at FringeArts and at the Fringe Festival. Otherwise all this creativity would pass by before I knew it was coming. Also, the staff is great to work with. I have made many friends over the years. FringeArts: Do you have a favorite memory? Dennis Hallda: Pig Iron Theatre Company’s show 99 Breakups at PAFA. It was so original and creative. The police showed up unexpectedly and there was a scene in a freight elevator. So cool.

FringeArts is always looking for volunteers, during the Fringe Festival and throughout the year. Usher a dance performance, collect tokens at a circus festival, or distribute programs at a play. The opportunities are endless; the art is spectacular! There is no minimum commitment and we welcome arts lovers ages 14-and-up. For more information, email volunteer@FringeArts.com or call 267.612.4903.

FringeArts: Do you have a favorite memory? Shoshana Lovett-Graff: Dancing around and pretending to be seaweed during an early performance of A Hard Time, part of High Pressure Fire Service. My partner was mortified, and I loved every second.

The FringeArts Ambassador Program is a cohort of volunteers, artistic participants, longtime fans of FringeArts, and community stakeholders who work to connect new audiences with FringeArts. To learn more about the program and how to participate, visit FringeArts.com/Ambassadors.
