Part of the ecosystem and cultural offer of Lancaster University, Live at LICA is celebrating the University’s 50th year under the banner ‘Made In Lancaster’ - welcoming back alumni to perform during autumn 2014 and spring 2015 including theatre maker David Leddy, conductor and comedian Rainer Hersch and artist Paul McDevitt. We’ll be presenting events in Lancaster city centre throughout the year and providing some big occasions on campus such as Ockham’s Razor whose performers used the full height of the LICA Building back in November. We’ve also added to the University’s impressive art collection acquiring works by Mel Brimfield, Iain Forsyth & Jane Pollard and Wu Chi-Tsung. This spring we turn our attention to commemorating Lancaster’s musical legacy courtesy of a Jack Hylton Anniversary concert (29 Jan) and concert in aid of Comic Relief (21 Mar) in the Great Hall.

For 2015 we’re extending the format, increasing opportunities to meet our team, meet LaL supported artists and - over tea and cake - share in conversations that will shape our future. We’ll be once again moving our café bar into the gallery for the duration, creating the perfect on campus antidote to exam season. We’ll be providing platforms for visitors to host their own creative and curatorial ideas and facilitate a talks and mediation programme showcasing upcoming LaL themes and artists. Whether you’re curious in the role of art in society/your region or just looking for something different to do, we’d love to see you there. We’re also keen to host events supporting the development of culture in Lancaster and beyond. For details please check our website or specific printed material.

… to Live At LICA’s spring 2015 season. Firstly I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support during our autumn 2014 season. I look forward to continuing those stimulating conversations with those of you I met last season, and to welcome new voices with every project.

PAUL MCDEVITT: HUNKER DOWN
TERMS & CONDITIONS
Peter Scott Gallery, Lancaster University Wednesday 28 January –Saturday 21 March 2015 Opening Launch: Tuesday 27 January
Hunker Down sees Berlin based artist Paul McDevitt utilise the Peter Scott Gallery as a provisional one-man publishing house. Initially conceived as a response to Lancaster University’s absence of an academic publishing house, Hunker Down is the umbrella under which a variety of printed matter is being realised in response to different aspects of the university campus and Lancaster itself. The whole project is an enquiry into aspects of DIY publishing, issues of self-reliance, communication, and improvisation. Several of the projects expand on McDevitt’s long established interests in collaboration by involving other artists, musicians and academics.
AMY SHARROCKS MUSEUM OF WATER The whole project, which will consist of several hundred new images, in book form, posters, or limited edition screen prints, consists entirely of new work. Exhibited works range in scale from postcards to a full-sized billboard print vertically spanning the height of the gallery. Hunker Down looks at different issues concerning underground publishing and art production in general, from questions of originality and authenticity, facsimile and mass production, fidelity and surface noise. The presentation of work in Hunker Down attempts to reflect the energy and sense of dialogue inherent within the individual projects.
The Storey Institute (Gallery) 6-8 & 20-22 February A collection of publicly donated water and accompanying stories. The museum encourages us to consider the many ways we access and enjoy water. Come along to make your own donation to the museum, as well as uncovering the existing collection. Presented in association with Artsadmin. Suitable for all. Details of the Museum of Water’s talks programme and half term activities will be available on our website. Check website for entry & opening times.
HANNAH JANE WALKER & CHRIS THORPE I WISH I WAS LONELY The Round at The Dukes Friday 13 February 1pm & 8pm I Wish I Was Lonely is an interactive show about contactability. A show in which the audience commit to leaving their phones on. A show investigating what it means to participate in communication – or not. There will be poems, there will be stories and there will be conversation.
DRUNKEN CHORUS DRUNKEN NIGHTS III Wagon & Horses Pub First Friday 6 March 8.30pm A triple bill of performances inspired by the Great British Pub; from standup comedy and karaoke, to pub quizzes, live music and dance floor shenanigans. The evening will feature a piece mentored by Live At LICA associate artist Andy Smith. Presented in association with Lancaster Arts City. (Free).
COMPANY CHAMELEON BEAUTY OF THE BEAST
THIRD ANGEL & SHEFFIELD THEATRES THE LIFE AND LOVES OF A NOBODY
The Rake at The Dukes Wednesday 13 May 8pm
Nuffield Theatre, Lancaster University Tuesday 27 January 8pm
Beauty of the Beast is a funny, moving and subversive look at behaviour between male peers. Company Chameleon uncover the many faces of the male subject - strength, vulnerability, camaraderie and hostility and ask what happens to male identity when subsumed by gender affiliation.
70mins. 14ys+
Nuffield Theatre, Lancaster University Thursday 19 February 8pm Told in a rich and saucy Scots dialect with physical verve, a wee dram of whisky to oil the way and a musical score that rolls in like mist over the hills, The Red Chair lies somewhere between a Grimm's Fairy Tale, an absurdist ghost story and a parent’s guide on how not to bring up children. Written & performed by Sarah Cameron. Produced in association with Fuel.
120mins. 18yrs+ 60mins. 14yrs+
70mins. 16yrs+
Internationally celebrated theatre makers Third Angel have created a visually stunning exploration of the gap between our dreams and our realities, and how we decide whose life stories deserve to be told.
CLOD ENSEMBLE THE RED CHAIR
120mins. 14yrs+ (Strong Language)
RAJNI SHAH & ANDY SMITH WE ARE CAPABLE OF SO MUCH MORE: EXPERIMENTS IN LISTENING (PART 3) The Jack Hylton Room, Lancaster University Friday 13 March 7pm 'Experiments in Listening' is one of a series of residencies that Rajni is initiating with friends who are also performancemakers. Each residency begins with the space between two people, a space that they might call 'friendship'. It asks what happens when friendship isn't held by niceness but by honesty, when a conversation is not just about talking, and when it lasts all week. At the end of the week they will open up this conversation to the public as a short performance. You are very welcome to join them. (Free).

Launched in 2014 OPEN was a week of open days held in our Peter Scott Gallery.

I was pleased to see that many of our events encouraged you to start conversations with the artists and us during post-show discussions, with fellow audience members at events and with the wider world on social media. I look forward to continuing those stimulating conversations with those of you I met last season, and to welcome new voices with every project.
PERFORMANCE & VISUAL ART
My colleagues and I are very keen that the world-class programme of work we promote responds to the bustling diversity of our audiences, on the campus, in the city and beyond. This season’s programme features critically acclaimed pieces such as the brilliant I Wish I Was Lonely presented alongside exclusive preview performances by companies such as Clod Ensemble and Third Angel. It is a great privilege for me to be sharing this programme with you, I will be waiting, excitedly, for your responses to the pieces we have carefully selected for you this season. MUSEUM OF WATER IN DEVELOPMENT
We are looking forward to welcoming back theatre studies alumni Third Angel with this brand new and visually stunning new performance about a woman who could be you and takes her life into her own hands.
Museum of Water is a unique, delicate and important piece of work. Presented in the stunning setting of the Storey Gallery, it asks big questions at a crucial moment in time for our planet.

COMIC RELIEF Over in the Great Hall, I warmly recommend that theatre, comedy and music fans join us on 21st March for our Concert for Comic Relief conducted by alumni comedian Rainer Hersch
Ongoing
Once again this season, much of our work is taking place behind the scenes, supporting artists in developing tomorrow’s excellent art. You may witness the results of some of this work by visiting Paul McDevitt’s exhibition in the Peter Scott Gallery and head over to the new Comment section of our website for regular project updates.
