EDITOR’S NOTE
Dear Readers,
Queridos lectores,
School is officially out! This means the summer season is here and the start of warm weather and family activities. As many of you parents gear up for the next few months keep in mind the following tips: 1. If you have not already done so, enroll your child in a camp or tutoring sessions. This will keep their young minds and bodies active. Doral has tons of options available for parents to choose from. 2. Plan some quality family time. This could be as simple as an extended lunch or dinner with no Cell phones to a weekend getaway with just the family and no work. With the ever increasing “connected 24/7” life we live we spend less time communicating 1 on 1 with our children. Change that! 3. Take some “me time”. Now that we are halfway through the year take a look back at the goals that you set for yourself in 2018. Are you on track to complete them by year’s end? Are you slacking? Have you already completed them?! Take inventory now and make changes.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOME
OFFICE WORK W
orking from home can be exciting! It brings the opportunity of being comfortable and efficient; however, you need to know how to play it right to optimize productivity. Before you start designing your home office, ask yourself:
home office. When shopping for your home office, you should stick to buying only what is necessary. Your basic shopping cart should include an office chair, a good size desk, two sides chairs, storage cabinetry and, most importantly, good lighting.
• What is the nature of my work? • What equipment do I require? • Will clients meet at my office? • Will I be receiving conference calls? • Do I need extra storage? • What space would be most suitable to set up my office? • How can I design this space to be exclusively used for office purposes?
Having good lighting is extremely important. The best type of lighting is natural daylight. Daylight is the most balanced source of white light available, since it has equal proportion of each color spectrum. If natural daylight is not available, you can combine general and task lighting. Not having enough lighting in a room can lead to negative psychological effects. Colors are also important to keep in consideration; it impacts moods and energy levels. Cool colors such as, blues, violets, and greens bring a feeling of peace and relaxation. Those color are ideal for bedroom but not for offices. The best colors for an office space are gray, white, and ivory because these colors are neutral and do not distract. They can be combined with accent colors to bring more energy and life to the room.
Your answers will serve as a guide in building your design. Consider setting up your office in a seldom-used guest room, a room that is separated from the house, or a study room. All your work should be contained inside of that space. This allows you to be more organized and efficient. Resist the urge to store home items in this room. Keeping home items out of the office space will bring a healthy work-life balance, and will allow you to relax at home while you are not working.
Being able to work in a space where you feel good and efficient is imperative because most of your day will be spent in that area. Working from home has the advantage of being comfortable and efficient, but you got to play it right to make it count.
Now that the schematics are done, it’s time to talk about the interior design and how to set up the furniture. There are a lot of furniture brands that specialized in office furniture, such as Herman Miller, Steelcase, Humanscale, Davis Furniture, and more. TEACHING YOUR CHILD ABOUT SUN SAFETY
P
arents can teach their children many things, such as how to read a book or tie their own shoes. They can also be great role models so kids will learn to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and always buckle up in the car. Another important lesson that parents can educate children about is the importance of sun safety. All children, regardless of skin color, need to be sun smart, but some need to take extra precautions, including those who have fair skin, spend a lot of time outside, have a family history of skin cancer or have certain diseases such as lupus. Everyone needs some sun exposure because the body produces vitamin D when it is exposed to the sun. Vitamin D is important for maintaining stronger, healthier bones. However, too much sun exposure can lead to premature aging of the skin, cataracts, a weakened immune system and skin cancer. Since an estimated 80 percent of a person’s lifetime sun exposure does occur before the age of 18, it is important to teach children how to protect their skin for the future.
IN JUST A FEW QUICK LESSONS CHILDREN CAN LEARN GOOD SUN SENSE. HERE’S HOW: LESSON 1: Apply plenty of waterproof or water resistant sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going outside and then again
every two hours. Make sure it is broad spectrum (protects against both ultraviolet (UV) A and UVB rays) and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the ears, nose, lips and tops of feet. LESSON 2: Cover up with protective clothing, such as a longsleeve shirt, pants and a hat that shades the face, scalp, ears and neck. LESSON 3: Have children wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from UV rays. Choose sunglasses that wrap around and block as close to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays as possible. Encourage kids to wear sunglasses by wearing them yourself, and let your child pick out a fun style they like. LESSON 4: Try to avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when rays are strongest. If children want to be outside, encourage them to seek shade when possible under a tree, umbrella or tent. Don’t forget that children can still get sunburn even if they are in the water or it is a cloudy day. If your child does get sunburn, have them take a cool bath to alleviate heat and an anti-inflammatory medication to lessen pain. To relieve additional discomfort, apply a topical moisturizing cream to rehydrate the skin and treat itching.
For more information about sun safety, talk with your doctor or call 1-844-812-9846 for a physician referral. 18 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . C O M

SMILES CARE
SAME DAY SMILES Cosmetic dentistry is constantly making technological advances. The results are increasingly beautiful, long lasting and improve the patients oral health. One of the most common trends in cosmetic dentistry is the change of smile in just a couple of hours!
D
r. Beauchamp specializes in cosmetic dentistry and can transform a yellow, twisted, deformed smile into a radiant Hollywood smile with just one treatment.
Dr. Gerardo Beauchamp is an integral dentist who has more than 25 years of work experience. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Dentistry at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. where he received his Doctor’s Degree in Dental Surgery (DDS), being one of the best and most recognized educational institutions in the United States. This month we were able to interview him and ask him about the latest innovations in dentistry and everything about smiles in a single day. Why is oral health so important? Oral health is very important. However, many people neglect their teeth and their oral health. I recommend to schedule oral cleansings regularly since brushing and flossing alone are not enough. For people under 25 years of age I recommend cleaning every 6 months, while for patients over 25 years of age I recommend that you schedule your cleaning every four months. - What are the latest advances in implant technology? The latest advances in implantology are small implants, for example, 8mm, 6mm and up to 5mm long. Traditionally, the practice of using implants that emulate the shape of natural teeth has been followed. In other words, an implant, ideally, should be twice as long as the crown of the tooth. However, we do not always have bone availability to put implants 10mm (or more) long. It has been determined, that what ties the implant to the bone is 2 or 3 mm immediately adjacent to the bone, so a long implant does not necessarily offer more firmness. If we think of architecture, a building never has twice as much base as its height. The tallest building in the world, for example, is 800 meters high and only 50 meters deep. This represents good news for patients who do not have enough bone to receive long implants.
20 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . C O M
Dr. Gerardo Beauchamp and wife Carmen Beauchamp
In our office, we take a digital scan of the patient (which is also one of the new advances in implantology) that allows us to visualize the bone in 3 dimensions, contrary to traditional radiographs that only show 2 dimensions. Thus, the bone is studied to determine its quality and composition, and the best implants are selected to reconstruct the tooth as it was naturally. - Plasma rich in platelets to regenerate bones. Is it no longer necessary to make bone implants from corpses? Plasma rich in platelets or in growth factors. The practice of bone grafting has also been revolutionized in recent years. Instead of favoring the use of bone obtained from human corpses (which is acquired from tissue banks), the growth factors that naturally occur in each patient’s blood are now used to promote bone development. This way the use of bone that is not naturally provided from the patient and the risk that it could be rejected by the body is minimized or completely eliminated. - What is the treatment of having a new smile in a day? Today, from a block of porcelain we carve crowns in just minutes. Thanks to digital technology, the dentist takes a virtual impression that moments later is sent to a
J U N E - J U LY 2 0 1 8
processor that manufactures the crown or veneer that will go on the tooth. The processor works similar to a key copy machine, except that it digitally carves the crown. In this way, treatments started and finished on the same day are offered with extraordinary results. If you are not happy with the shape or color of your smile, the dentist can transform your smile in just a few hours. Get a free consultation to see if this procedure is feasible for you. A new smile is at your fingertips in just one day! - When did you arrive to Doral? We arrived in Doral in 1993 when we bought a house after the birth of our first child. A few years later we opened our current office in 1997, 20 years ago. In those days, Doral was not very big, we were not even “city” yet. I was one of the first dentists to open a dental office in the area. Through the years we have seen and been a part of the tremendous growth and establishment of Doral as a city. - What do you like most about Doral? Doral we love! Living in a new community that has it all, having my office a short distance from my home and enjoying the convenience of not passing through traffic and having everything nearby, are the best blessings of living in Doral. Also, developing long-term relationships with my patients and seeing them in places like the market, the pharmacy and the church, are additionally great benefits of living in Doral. I do not change Doral for anything in the world!

24 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E .

n May, Venezuela’s most recognized chef, Carlos Garcia, debuted his highly anticipated first stateside concept, Obra Kitchen Table, in Miami’s Brickell neighborhood, located on the ground level of the Jade at Brickell building. At Obra Kitchen Table, the most special place to be seated is at the open-kitchen’s wrap-around counter, which seats 25. Here, customers connect with the chef, the dishes, the cooking process and each other while casually dining on Garcia’s award-winning Latin American cuisine with international influences. The 3,015-squarefoot restaurant is a bustling spot for friends, family, co-workers and couples to gather for lunch, late-afternoon snacks and relaxed dinners where great food and drinks are served at fair prices.
After training at several of the most renowned restaurants in Spain, including El Bulli, El Celler de Can Roca and Mugaritz, Garcia returned to his hometown of Caracas where he quickly garnered a stellar reputation, opening his first restaurant, Alto, in 2007. Garcia’s innovative and contemporary take on Venezuelan cuisine earned Alto a coveted spot on “Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants” list in 2013, which had premiered its Latin American Chapter that same year, and was heralded as the “Best Restaurant in Venezuela” for four consecutive years. While Alto continues to flourish in Caracas and is Garcia’s flagship restaurant, he was motivated by the inherent challenge of opening a restaurant in Miami. “At Obra Kitchen Table I plan to bring the warmth of Latin America flavors, what I call “cocina sabrosa,” which means delicious, enjoyable food prepared with recognizable, seasonal and local ingredients, presented in the most unpretentious and creative ways,” says Garcia, who plans to split his time between both kitchens.
Obra Kitchen Table centers its kitchen around a Josper Charcoal Oven Grill that is used to cook a large portion of the menu. Begin the meal with starters like Roasted Clams ($11) with corn court-bouillon and pico de gallo; Snapper Tiradito ($17) with pineapple rum and mashed ripe banana and fried kale; and Scallops “Reina Pepiada” ($12), one of many Venezuelan-inspired specialties on the menu. Continue down the menu with pasta and rice selections like Spaghetti with Octopus Carbonara ($21); Black Fideua with Mussels ($22); and Squid and Artichoke Paella ($18). Entrees range from seafood selections like Fried Red Snapper ($32) with roasted cabbage and “salsa verde” to traditional slow cooked meats like Short Rib Asado Negro ($34) and Pork Pernil ($26) prepared Venezuelan-style and finished in the Josper for additional flavor. Finish the meal with desserts including Tierra de Cacao ($12), incorporating Garcia’s obsession for cacao, a source of national pride for Venezuelans; and Coconut Tres Leches ($10). For lunch, guests are offered a condensed a la carte menu or their choice of a $21 Prix Fixe; the latter begins with a cup of Garcia’s signature “Barriga Llena” chicken soup and a choice of a
protein, two sides and a dessert. For each prix fixe menu sold, $1 will be donated to Garcia’s foundation, Barriga Llena Corazón Contento, an initiative that he founded in July 2016 to feed soup, one of the most nutritious and comforting foods that exists, to the hungry children of Hospital J.M. De Los Ríos in Caracas, as well as for the nurses, doctors and family members of these children. The celebration of Latin American flavors continues to flow with Obra’s beverage program. Guests imbibe on signature cocktails like the Mexican-inspired NonTraditional Negroni ($13) made with Ilegal Mezcal, Carpano Antica, Campari, and carrot and blood orange juice; the Brazilian-inspired Menina ($12) with blended cachaca, acai, lime juice, agave and basil topped with coconut shavings; and of course, representing Venezuela and one of the most significant drinks of the house, the Criollo ($12) made with Santa Teresa 1796 Rum, cold brew coffee with cacao, passion fruit puree, agave and topped with ground dark cacao. A curated selection of wine and beer are also offered. Obra’s fresh, clean and contemporary space was designed by wellknown architect and interior designer Alejandro Barrios Carrero. His previous projects include Juvia, for which he won a James Beard Award for “Outstanding Restaurant Design” in 2013, and Sushi Garage in Miami, as well as Garcia’s own Alto in Caracas.
32 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . C O M

MOJITO

CARS
Why Do People Still Love Classic Cars? In most cases, classic cars are rubbish. As James May once said, if they were any good, they’d still be made. Modern cars are faster, better handling, more reliable, more comfortable, cleaner, safer, more economical, and mostly cheaper to purchase, too. Basically, they’re better in just about every way. Yet despite this, the clearly inferior classic car not only still exists, but is positively thriving these days. Why?
by hand and by eye. The results of this are creations that have withstood the hardships of daily usage and weathered the passage of time. Not all are like this, of course. Some were very poorly designed, and built with even less care, but this is what separates classic cars from cars that are merely old. Mechanically, they are quite different, too. Modern car engines are effectively a sealed unit, comprising of components that are largely unserviceable by the average person. Simply speaking, most components are controlled by a central electronic brain, which
THERE IS NO SIMPLE ANSWER TO THIS, BUT INSTEAD A COMBINATION OF FACTORS THAT EACH PLAY A PART. First, there’s the design of the car itself. Classic cars were created very much in an analogue world where designers used pencil and paper to create elegant shapes and flowing lines that would just not be possible on the computer-based design software used by modern car designers. Take the front wing of a Jaguar XK120 or the profile of a Ferrari 250 GTO, for example. These designs are beautiful in every way, but are shapes that no modern designer would create nowadays—often, the way the metal frame underneath the bodywork used during the prototype stage (and even “bucks” used to shape bodywork) would have a direct influence on the car’s form. These designs belong to a previous age— an age that many people fondly look back on, where designers were unencumbered by constraints such as crash tests, or aerodynamic drag coefficients, and instead created shapes that reflected the mood and trends of the time.

takes inputs from the driver, and then filters them through systems such as the driveby-wire throttle system, the traction control, electric steering, electronic clutch, the torque vectoring system, the ABS system, and so on.
Modern production techniques have also removed much of the character from new cars. Mass production “systems” complete with soulless computers and robots on the
Classic car production, on the other hand, was largely a manual process performed by craftsmen using simple tools complemented by decades of experience to create panels
All of these systems are designed to improve efficiency and safety, but on some level, they often rob the car of its feel and character. Older machines, in contrast, are the real deal. They are delicately balanced mechanical systems comprising hundreds or thousands of individual parts, all tuned to work together in harmony. The driver is a direct extension to the machine, providing inputs and receiving direct, unfiltered feedback through the controls, resulting in an authentic experience that is just not possible with the modern equivalent.
MECHANICALLY, THEY ARE QUITE DIFFERENT, TOO. 36 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . C O M

Driving a classic car requires a great deal of manual input from the driver, from adjusting the fuel/air mixture manually with the choke, to selecting gears and controlling the engagement of power to the wheels with the clutch.

CARS
Owners of classic cars gain great satisfaction from exhibiting their cars at these events and use them as a means to show off not only the car but also their own personality and taste. Purchasers of modern cars typically calculate their ownership period of anything between 6 months and 5 years before they move on to something newer and better, but classic car owners see it the opposite way: the cars will exist beyond their tenure, and they are merely temporary custodians of something that has a life beyond theirs.
All this needs to be done in a way that gets the best out of the engine and transmission— but proper technique also protects the longevity of the ageing components. Getting all this right is inherently more challenging than the modern equivalent of electronic ignition, automatic transmissions and electronic driver aids, but a far more rewarding and satisfying experience. Nostalgia also plays a large part in the appeal of classics. They all have a history, be it interesting or not. Some have achieved great things in their lives, such as competing in and winning races, expeditions or endurance events, whilst others have overcome challenges that are far more mundane but no less important to the owner. These machines were great enablers of a better life and provided mobility and freedom back in a time when such qualities were rare. They accompanied their owners on major life events, and consequently became indelibly associated with those events.
of exclusivity. No amount of money will get you a brand new Ferrari Daytona, for example, and even if you want an old one, you still have to find someone, somewhere who is willing to sell you theirs. The greater effort of acquiring, owning and maintaining a more exclusive product prompts questions of the owner’s passion for that product and his or her motivation for going to these additional lengths when owning a new car is so much simpler and easier. A culture has emerged surrounding classic cars, comprising of events such as classic rallies, road trips, historic racing, and classic car shows.
So will this continue, or is it just a passing trend? New cars are likely to get better and better with each passing year, so the 3 year old car that you have today is likely to be already outclassed by the new model just released. Classic cars, however, compete on a completely different level. it’s not about efficiency and speed, but about the experience, style, exclusivity and craftsmanship, all of which are universal and timeless. Classic cars not only appeal to car lovers, but also to lovers of engineering, design, art and history.
Classic cars all have a story to tell about what they have accomplished in their lives, where they have been, and why they are still in operation. The cracks in the leather or the scratches on the paint are seen by some as imperfections, but to aficionados of classic cars, these are a record of the car’s history, adding to its character and chronicling its life. Automobile manufacturers play heavily on the pedigree and heritage of their brands, but classic cars are the real-life objects that defined that heritage and established the reputation of the brand in the first place. Then there’s the individualism. Owning any new car is easy—all it takes is money, and with cheap credit and easy finance, even that is not very difficult any longer. Classic cars however, are no longer in production and are therefore inherently limited in supply, consequently holding a far greater and ever increasing level 38 L I V E D O R A L M A G A Z I N E . THAT IS THE REASON WHY PEOPLE DO, AND ALWAYS WILL, LOVE CLASSIC CARS—AND LONG MAY IT CONTINUE.
