LET TER FROM THE PUBLISHER We all need time for a mental break during the coming days and weeks, if not months.

“Distillery Channel Coffee Journal” is leading the way beginning with this April issue to meet that goal. We all are sitting home, hopefully, and waiting to see when the all clear is sounded; but there is only so much numbing isolation we can take between morning news conferences and the evening news.

So, it’s time to enjoy a good cup of coffee, hot tea or your favorite calming potion while

strolling through our Electronic Magazine, now delivered free of charge to over 10,000 Distillery Channel member organizations and their Facebook followers averaging in a total of 5,000.

This issue is full of upbeat travel, sipping, adventure and pictorial articles all supported

with great music you can listen to throughout the magazine. Robert Mills, Dina Garcia, Daniel Sullivan and Art Stricklin are featured on our weekly “The Next Taste”, “The Next Taste in Music” and “The Happy Hour Lifestyle Show” podcasts, found on iTunes, i-Heart, Stitcher, Spotify and many other of your favorite podcast platforms. “Distillery Channel Coffee Journal” has become the base for all of our productions and website updates.

We have also formed a positive, spirited relationship and partnership with “Nuwazzz

International”, of Hollywood, California, with Mr. Alwaz Carey. Related to an amazing family of talent Mr. Carey is the second cousin of Maria Carey, and Uncle to Bunchie Young - “The Take it to the House Kid” featured in the NFL Super Bowl 2020. This month’s issue will include a number of his songs, his spiritual journey personal and growth in mindful living.

With Mr. Carey and I having had similar lifechanging experiences having our

Grandparents playing such a huge role in our life, we have created the “The LUV COTTAGE, LLC”, in support of growing a loving and spiritual corporate journey, bringing upbeat and faith driven life experiences going forward.

Please enjoy this month’s additional features produced by our talented Editor-in-Chief,

Ms. Kira Peterson, as she is loading this magazine with links that take you in and out of trips, photos, and music from around the world.

Breaking News

“Delivering what the World Needs” Written By Randy Weckerly

The Distillery Channel’s weekly production, “The Next Taste in Music”, featuring Mr. Alwaz Carey and his company “Nuwazzz International” his deck of musicians and singers, became the international platform announcing contracts the Carey Family worked in securing providing the world “Covid 19 - 10 Minute Home Tests”.

The news broke on our show by Mr. Carey relating the story and how these contracts were

secured by his wife, Rochelle Rene’ Carey and himself on April 14, 2020. April 14,2020, the Carey’s were celebrating his daughter’s birthday as she turned 13.

Please listen to the segment as Mr. Carey relates how this lifetime contract secured with USA

contract, provides testing people at home or away. National concerns like cruise companies, hotels, any public venue, restaurants, schools or private citizen can perform this 10 Minute Test to understand their exposure to the Corona virus.

Miss Kira and Ole Uncle Randy, hosts of the show, are honored to be a small part of this

announcement to the world. We learned additionally Mr. Carey and his wife are additionally working with suppliers networked through their lifetime of connections in media, education, family and international travel.

Rochelle and Mr. Carey, we congratulate you and your wife for diligently being part of

providing a meaningful pathway bringing the world to understanding how we go forward with our private life and meaningful testing which opens normalizing life post Covid -19. A Heart Felt Thank You from our Team and the Rest of the World.

The Alwaz Carey Story “Josephine My Rock”

Written By: Randy Weckerly

Photos Provided By: Alwaz Carey

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

15

Mr. Carey grew up, he found he had the

athletic talent to succeed in four sports, and to have the ability to excel in football, basketball, track and field. All State status but still coming from a troubled home. The product of white and black parents, Mr. Carey could not find the middle of the road, brilliant as a scholar, his apprentice in gangs and violence surfaced one day at the age of 19. Caught up in a bad situation, he spent the weekend in jail and found comfort in prayer, with horror in his surroundings. He promised God and Jesus, that if somehow, he could find a new beginning, he would dedicate his life to faith and Jesus.

The past months I have been blessed to

grow in my relationship in friendship and foundational spiritual journey with one Mr. Alwaz Carey. For now, my friend, Mr. Carey, his family and his spiritual journey is the focus. Pictures through this article, some out of focus and some contemporary, only begin to tell his journey, his incredibly talented, athletically gifted and given supreme innate intelligence, all supported by a deeply embedded belief in Jesus Christ.

This is an overview of a book that is being written simultaneously. Mr. Carey’s life began being delivered three months early due to a fall his mother had during her pregnancy. The miracle of his surviving after being diagnosed as brain dead at birth and spent 90 days in NICU, is foundationally a miracle in itself. That is only the beginning. Have you ever hidden in a closet at the age

of 4 and have the FBI raid your house and pull you at gun point out of that closet? That is where this story begins, as this did happen to Mr. Carey. His neighborhood was filled with drugs, gangs and his house were raided. The scars exist today over this one day in his life. Foundationally, it is never forgotten.

As his friend and author, I can tell you in

many ways I cannot relate to living in a world of gangs, violence, and a world of marginal love and support of a family. The miracle of this weekend in jail, provided his motivation to change. His grandma Josephine came to the jail and took her grandson home. His grandma Josephine became his rock as the years of his youth, no more important days than her giving him a new outlook in life.

Fast forward to today, Mr. Carey is part

of an incredible family, an entrepreneur, a loving father and husband, along with growing musical talent in his “Nuwazzz International” company located in Hollywood, California. He has grown to connect with the biggest names in movies, music, and television on the West Coast. His connections have come hard earned as every day for 20 years his belief in paying it forward has now unfolded in becoming not only a performer, but also a curator of the talent of his nephew Bunchie Young, the NFL Super Bowl 2020 Opening, “Take it to the House” kid. Mr. Carey’s brother, Dave Young is Bunchie dad. Mr. Carey have carefully mentored and grown Bunchie as a leader of his 13-year-old contemporaries.

Few more important pieces to Mr. Carey’s

extended family are needed to set the stage for the Bunchie story. Mr. Carey is a cousin to music star Mariah Carey; it is easy to see shared musical talent is apparently in the genes. When it comes to athletic talent, the Young and Carey names have deeps roots on the NFL, NCAA and future stardom of Bunchie.

Chase Young, from “The Ohio State”, is

projected to go NFL Draft 2020 Number 2 pick. Mr. Vernon Carey, Jr. center for Duke University announced he going to be a part of the 2020 NBA Draft. Then there is Bunchie Young, who has thirteen scholarships at Division 1 Universities.

The Recap: “Unfolding the Story” However, this is a story not only about

NFL Super Bowl 2020 Introduction: https://youtu.be/lbkafMhmvMo Bunchie’s YouTube Channel is about his

path of training, getting ready to play on the highest level and competing at the 2020 Junior Olympics. With over 18 million views, Bunchie Young is not only the most highly recruited 13-year-old for football but also the fastest 13-year-old on the planet. His energy, talent and family are unstoppable.

The blending of “The Distillery Channel” and producing Mr. Carey’s weekly show, “The Next Taste in Music”, Miss Kira and myself have become quite close on a professional and personal level.

Bunchie, but also the Young and Carey Families and the merger of talent and platform of “The Distillery Channel’s Team”, Miss Kira and Ole Uncle Randy doing our homespun podcasts featuring this great family. We learned quite quickly that this is story of family, spirituality, talent, with music delivering the message. The story of Mr. Alwaz Carey unfolded during our podcasts on the “Happy Hour Lifestyle Show” and “The Next Taste In Music Show”.

Mr. Alwaz Carey, President of “Nuwazzz International”, is Bunchie Young’s uncle, as his brother is Bunchie’s father. Mr. Carey is the second cousin of Mariah Carey and also related to Chase Young of “The Ohio State”, an All-Star Football Player and NFL Draft 2020 predicted 2nd Round Draft Pick.

We found through hours of conversation

since meeting, that Mr. Carey is one talented musician having written over 7500 pieces of music now in his vault; including the soundtrack for Kevin Hart’s upcoming movie. He is also a spiritually grounded individual, whose love for Jesus Christ comes through in every conversation.

The Distillery Channel has produced a

show called “The Next Taste Show” which featured travel, adventure, and professionals from all walks of life appearing on the show.

We began introducing Mr. Carey’s music,

and his in-house musical productions featuring: Solo 1, Mr. Thompson, Captain Kirk, Taylor Brook, Laval Jackson, and Mr. Carey’s son, B Alexander on our shows. We soon grew to adding an additional show now called “The Next Taste in Music”, found on iTunes, Spotify, iHeart, Stitcher, Alexa TuneIn and Google Play.

19

20 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

All songs featured have a story behind them; are inspirational and containing no foul language. “The Next Taste in Music Show” can be heard at: https://bit.ly/3bO6ICD. As his weekly story evovled, we found Mr.

Carey has led a similar life as me, having had the guidance, leadership and love of a grandparent intervening at an early age.

“The Backstory” Mr. Carey had some instances in his early

life taking him down a path that was filled with huge rocks in the road and obstacles of jail time. His grandmother, Josephine, stepped in and challenged Mr. Carey to have a strong belief in God and Jesus Christ and faith knowing all things will work out for the good, and the way they are meant to be. Mr. Carey wrote music in honor of his Grandmother’s tough love and drive to get him to self-direct to a better place.

I could relate to Mr. Carey in his story as

my own grandfather, Nevin Foy, was my inspiration all days since knowing him and losing him in 1964. We spent many years renovating cottages in Wisconsin. From the age of 6 I worked as my grandfather’s number one sidekick. I only relate this today, as Mr. Carey and I have the commonality of independent shared experiences of the love of our grandparents being such a powerful influence on our growing up. He and I agree we would not be the people we are today if we didn’t have the love of his Grandma Josephine and my Pop-Pop. This faith journey and chance meeting has bonded Mr. Carey and me to create a new corporation, called the “Luv Cottage, LLC”.

22 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

“The Future – The Perfect Fit” Bunchie Young, Mr. Carey, Chase Young

and others related to Mr. Carey and a deck of over 7,500 songs, combine with The Distillery Channel to have over 10,000 small craft businesses and millions of people hear this story along with multiple other stories relating to the pent-up talent on The Distillery Channel media platform.

Miss Kira and I decided to send some of

our Specialty Roast Coffee in celebration of our new merger. In the initial package we sent Mr. Carey some of our specialty roasted coffees including: “Cherry Pie Coffee”, “Apple Pie Coffee”,“Bananas Foster” and “Huckleberry Coffee” specialty roast. Apparently, it is a caffeinated hit as we are now producing “Luv Alwazzzz Coffees” celebrating Mr. Carey’s love of music and our coffee.

Hence, the “Luv Cottage, LLC.” a

corporation celebrating music, athleticism, and faith in God and Jesus Christ. During the podcasts, Miss Kira and Old Uncle Randy partner to center on the music and entertainment provided by Mr. Carey. We have unfolded our histories, celebrating stories of our youth and our grandparents.

Much to my surprise, Mr. Carey created

and released a song called “Grandpa’s Smile” in honor of my grandfather. It tearfully humbles me every time I listen to it, as I remember my grandfather and the times we had together.

We took it one step further, by using our proprietary method, of including his music and our website on the back of every coffee bag. It’s a tasty fun project and you can find more information on our webpage featuring Mr. Carey and “The Next Taste in Music”. https://www.thedistillerychannel.com/about-2

Alwaz Carey Biography Alwaz hails from Columbus, Ohio. He started performing for friends and family in the choir at the tender age of three and his father put him on a professional stage at the age of five years old, where he learned to rock a mic and please a crowd. Alwaz was raised by his grandmother and mother who taught him to love others unconditionally. Alwaz mastered musical instruments such as the drums, keyboards and percussion and started singing. He went on to rap and produce in the inner city ghettos with artists such as STANLEY JAMES, KAISER JONES, LAVEL JACKSON, BC, and HONEY PARKER just to name a few. His love for the community is seen through his work with such organizations as LIFT UP AMERICA, BOYS and GIRLS CLUBS of AMERICA, LIVING ADVANTAGE, ON A MISSION, LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT MIDDLE SCHOOLS, and various PRISON MINISTRIES in OHIO, GEORGIA, and NEW YORK. Growing up in the one of the roughest sections of Columbus, Alwaz had to find inspiration and sources for support and strength at an early age. His outlet was developed through his athletic abilities, which started at the West Side Boys Club at age four. He excelled in football, basketball and track from elementary to high school. He held positions such as team captain and Ohio All-State running back. He received a football scholarship to attend Urbanna University in Springfield, Ohio. Alwaz has dedicated his life to giving rather than receiving. This is why his life stories will be shared with everyone, from children to the elderly, in order to touch and strengthen their souls. His music paints a picture in the listener’s mind of the harsh realities yet the hope we have to change the picture and make dreams become reality. He does this to a dope beat: hip-hop, soul and rock-n-roll. His Motto is “I can show you better than I can tell you”. Alwaz has written and produced his own music. His vision and music are through the love of God “with no curse in his verse”. Alwaz has written and produced more than 300 songs which include all genres of music geared towards movie sound tracks. Alwaz has opened up for several professional musicians both in the secular and non-secular music world. NAS, Jodeci, Tone Loc, 2 Live Crew, 112, Montell Jordan, Kirk Franklin, Gospel Rapper T-Bone, The Next Generation, and the Gospel Gangstas. He also co-wrote a song entitled “Revolutionary” with the lead guitarist of TWISTED SISTER, Dan Mcafferty. Alwaz is an international good new lyricist and his company, Luv Alwaz Music Group, is his vehicle to spread music all over the globe.

Taylor Brooke Biography Taylor Brooke hails from Nashville, Tennessee, but moved, with her family, to Los Angeles,

California just after her second birthday. Taylor’s pursuit of excellence started at a very young age when she left home in Los Angeles, at the tender age of 13, to pursue her goal of making the US Synchronized Swim team in Walnut Creek, California. She achieved that goal by earning a spot on the US National Team and followed up that appointment by winning the gold medal at the Pan American Games for Team USA. After successfully representing her country in synchronized swimming, she turned her attention to speed swimming and holds 5 school records at Berean Christian High School, while at the same time competed for a Gold Medal Swim Club in Walnut Creek. Her exploits in the pool were outdone only by her a 4.12 GPA and the pursuit of her first love and artistic dreams as a vocalist in her high school’s choir. Her pursuit of excellence in every area of her life earned her an academic, athletic and arts scholarship to Catawba College in Salisbury, North Carolina, where during her freshman year in 2017-18 she pursued a double major in Popular Music: Vocal Emphasis and Music Business, achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA, competed for the college swim team, setting two school records, and performed in numerous showcases in the music department as a singer/songwriter. Taylor is committed to continue to grow as a woman of integrity, student, athlete, singer and songwriter and she hopes to have the opportunity to touch the lives of many with her art and to be an encouragement to all that anything is possible through faith, the pursuit of excellence, and perseverance. BRANSON, Missouri – The

combination of majestic Ozark Mountains scenery, mild weather for most of the year, and abundant off-course activities has long made this a prime golf and travel destination. But the addition of golf visionary Johnny Morris and his Big Cedar Lodge courses, including the recently opened Tiger Woods’ designed Payne’s Valley, has catapulted this small Southwest Missouri town and its new playing options into the global spotlight. Yet when you visit this rising star golf capital, don’t forget to play book tee times at the longtime course favorites that made the area popular originally.

The $31 million masterpiece was designed by course architect Chuck Smith, with consultant Bobby Clampett, the former US Amateur Champion and PGA Tour member. Inside the grand clubhouse are numerous pictures of Stewart, who grew up in nearby Springfield, where people who fly into the destination arrive. With a fully stocked pro shop and dining area that overlook the course and all of its scenery, it’s easy to see why this course is so highly rated.

STORY BOTTOM While many of the golf locations have

their own on-site lodging for stay and play packages, perhaps the best non-golf course lodging location is the 12-story Hilton Branson Convention Center on Main Street. From there you can walk a few short blocks to historic Branson shops in one direction. The other directions take you to the modern, riverside Branson Landing entertainment district and its eclectic variety of downtown shops connected via skybridge from the Convention Center. The hotel also can arrange golf and golf packages for those interested. There is also the Level 2 Steakhouse to celebrate or commiserate all golf victories or losses.

Among the best of the established courses

is Branson Hills Golf Club, located in Branson’s north end. Formerly named Payne Stewart Golf Course, it became Branson Hills several years ago, after the licensing agreement granting use of the erstwhile major champion’s name and likeness expired. Golfweek has ranked it either the No. 1 or No. 2 course in Missouri since 2012, and rightfully so. The course plays from 7,300 yards to 5,300 yards and meanders over the large, wooded property. It can play as challenging or as accommodating as desired, based on which tee boxes are selected.

It’s truly amazing what Bass Pro Shops

founder Johnny Morris and his talented team have created for Big Cedar Lodge, including Top of the Rock, a golf facility like no other. Self-proclaimed as “America’s Next Great Golf Destination,” it’s hard to do justice to Big Cedar Golf a single story. Any golfer who has traveled even a little will be amazed with all that the ever-growing facility offers.

Conservation married with resort

attractions are what make Big Cedar Golf perhaps the most creative and unusual golf destination in the world. An astounding cavern tour on your golf cart, compete with underground waterfalls and a bar, comes with your greens fee at Jack Nicklaus-designed Top of the Rock. The par-3 course, gloriously perched overlooking Table Rock Lake, was played as part of the PGA Tour Champions Bass Pro Shops Legends of Golf for several years.

Also, at Top of the Rock is the Ancient

Tom Fazio designed Buffalo Ridge Springs, which was initially named Branson

Creek upon opening in 1999. Like all Big Cedar courses, it’s located outside the main resort property, but integrated within its own resort setting. After Morris purchased it, he and Fazio collaborated on a course redesign that debuted in 2014. Golf Digest now ranks it as the No. 1 public course in Missouri, and one of the “Top 100 Resort Courses” in the United States. Dotting the layout are natural caves and millions-year-old exposed limestone that Morris, a noted conservationist, went to great lengths to excavate.

55

Ozarks Natural History Museum, a two-story facility that includes artifacts ranging from Native American to mammal (a giant Wooly Mammoth skeleton greets visitors as they enter the main foyer). And true to Morris’ love for, and Bass Pro origins in fishing, a replica of a then-world-record black marlin (1,358 pounds) that Nicklaus caught in 1978 hangs over the bar in the Mexican restaurant at “Arnie’s Barn.” Yes, that Arnie. A nearly 200-year-old wood beam barn from Latrobe, Pa., was disassembled and moved to Top of the Rock. There it was rebuilt and expanded to include restaurants, wine and whisky cellar, golf clubhouse and locker rooms, patios overlooking Table Rock Lake below, and more. Mr. Palmer is deeply connected to Top of the Rock, having become a good friend of Morris while designing the all-synthetic turf Arnold Palmer Driving Range. Opened in 2014, it has 16 target greens ranging from 50 to 325 yards, waterfalls, even a cavern system that is being excavated near the practice facility.

Big Cedar Golf is nothing if not tied to

icons of the game. For instance, the 13-hole, par-3 Mountain Top short course was designed by World Golf Hall of Famer Gary Player. A walking only venue offering push-pull carts and opened in August 2017, it highlights long-range views, ingenious hole designs, and a tee box system wherein players choose from where to begin each hole (versus pre-ordained starting points).

The Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore design,

Ozark National, opened in late 2018. It illuminates the highly esteemed duo’s minimalistic design philosophy, ideal for showcasing the pristine Ozarks terrain on which it brilliantly unfurls.

Payne’s Valley, Tiger Woods’ first public

golf offering, certainly does its part to enhance the scenic surroundings, but is also very player friendly. In his first Texas course, Bluejack National, Woods said his goal was for golfers to play all 18 holes without losing a golf ball. Except for a few exceptions and one island green, the same could be said here. “We are building an experience unlike anything that’s been done before that will bring golfers of all ages and skill levels together and create lasting memories,” Morris said.

The same could be said for all of Branson

Golf. Other well-regarded courses in the destination are LedgeStone (Tom Clark design), Thousand Hills (Bob Cupp), The Pointe, and Holiday Hills.

Simple Tips to Eat a Trigger Food Without Bingeing Written By: Dina Garcia

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

73

Do you have a trigger food? Or a list of forbidden foods?

What happens when you eat those forbidden foods? Are you riddled with guilt? Once you start eating them, do you find that you can’t stop, and that you binge on them?

I hear so often from clients that they avoid

foods they really like because they don’t trust themselves to not overeat them. Well, this rarely works in the long run.

But why?

Before I dive into a simple strategy to help

you eat a trigger food without worrying about binging, I want to point out that one technique doesn’t serve as a magic wand to instantly cure binge eating.

When I work with clients one on one,

I guide them through a process that first helps them identify and meet their basic needs as well as identify habitual behaviors that need to be reprogramed in order for them to truly be successful.

Throughout the process of working

together, I often use a technique I call Delay and Distract but Don’t DepriveTM.

This technique works great for some people all on its own. Others may need to combine it with additional coaching and other strategies. Well, restriction is the driving force

behind most binge eating episodes. If you avoid a certain food you really want for an extended period of time, when you eventually have it, there is a good chance you’ll overeat it. Not only because you have felt deprived, but you may also be telling yourself in the moment that later you can’t have the food again.

When I speak at my Nutrition Talks, I

teach my audience about how to bring the joy back to food with mindful eating. I also teach them that the Delay and Distract but Don’t DepriveTM method is more effective at helping you enjoy your favorite food without overeating when you are in a more mindful and conscious state (to learn more about mindful eating, check out this blog post).

74 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

The Trick to Being Able to Eat Your Trigger Foods without Binge Eating Here’s how the Delay and Distract but

Don’t Deprive TM technique works:

Step 1: Portion Portion out a reasonable amount of the

food you are craving, then put the container away. It should be enough to satisfy you but not so much that it will make you uncomfortably full.

Step 2: Determine a Distraction Determine a distraction task to be used

Step 4: Distract Yourself When you are done eating your trigger

food (and the dopamine that just flooded your brain is leaving, your brain is likely screaming “give me more!”) push yourself to do the task you set in step 2.

It is crucial that you do step 2 before you

start eating. Otherwise, your brain may be too clouded with dopamine to resist going back for more. It’s also important in this step to avoid using restrictive self-talk like “this is all I can have” or “I can’t or shouldn’t have more.”

later. It doesn’t have to be anything significant. It could be as simple as changing your laundry, making a call, going for a walk, checking your email, etc.

now. This helps teach the brain that it is okay to delay gratification.

Step 3: Enjoy Your Treat Sit down undistracted to enjoy the treat

Step 5: Re-Evaluate After finishing the task from step 2,

you portioned out in step 1. Pay attention to all five senses while eating. Enjoy it without guilt.

You aren’t saying no, you’re just saying not

re-evaluate if you want another portion and repeat these steps if necessary.

The point isn’t to deprive yourself of what you want but rather to distract yourself so you can delay eating. Essentially it is used to practice delayed gratification.

This technique is meant to be used to prevent yourself from overeating your trigger food and becoming uncomfortably full. It is not intended to be used to under eat. Honor your hunger and satiety through the process. Some situations where this technique can come in handy include: • When you want to have food you really enjoy but are fearful of overeating or binging on it • When you find yourself wanting to mindlessly snack? • When you are at a party or social event and don’t want to lose control at the food table • When you want to slowly reintroduce foods that you are afraid to eat

75

• When you are trying to reduce the severity of a binge episode. It can be unrealistic for some people to just “stop binging” very abruptly. Gradually lessening the severity of a binge can be a great 1st step. • When the abundance of food in the breakroom at work becomes a big distraction

San Francisco, a City with a History Like No Other Written By: Robert Mills

84 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

Let’s start the incredible story of San

Francisco at its very beginning 13,000 years ago, because that is when the first people showed up. They came from Siberia during an Ice Age, paddling. their way to what is now California in dugout canoes made out of trees cut down with stone axes and hollowed out with sharp rocks. Whole families climbed into these flimsy vessels with their kids and dogs and followed the coastline of Alaska east and then turned southward along the Canadian coast.

They had no maps, no matches, no idea of

what lay ahead. Imagine their courage and the resourcefulness it took for them to find their way thousands of miles in the bitter cold – hunting wild animals with nothing but spears or bows and arrows, then skinning those animals for their fur and meat. Imagine starting fires with nothing but flint in rainy or snowy forests.

When they arrived in what is now San

Francisco toward the end of the last Ice Age, the Pacific Ocean was about 350-400 feet lower than it is today. There was no San Francisco Bay. Instead, there was a verdant valley full of an immense profusion of wild animals. Some archeologists believe that the greatest and richest mass of wild animals that ever existed in one spot on Earth roamed then over what is now San Francisco. There were saber-toothed tigers, mastodons, camels, huge 15 foot-tall short-nosed bears, Dire wolves, horses, antelopes, Tule elk, grizzly bears, mountain lions and a host of other large mammals.

The new arrivals witnessed a gigantic

waterfall near where the Golden Gate Bridge is today as the Sacramento River, full of glacier melt from the Sierra Nevada, roared over a granite lip and plunged 900 feet into the coastal plain. The thundering sound of this huge fall could be heard over the entire northern part of what is now San Francisco.

The Pacific Ocean could not be seen from anywhere in what became the future City, as the beach had receded 35 miles westward from the current coast line.

The arriving Siberians continued to make the trek in waves for centuries, and were later joined by similar waves of Native American tribes migrating from both the east and south. These arrivals spread out across California, and because of its extreme ecological diversity -- deserts, rain forests, glaciered mountains, chaparral, wetlands and grasslands -- the new natives diversified into over 100 different tribes speaking over 100 different languages. While several of these nomadic tribes roamed about the foggy, windswept sand dunes in what is now San Francisco, none took up permanent residence.

85

A period of global warming began about

this time and the millennia beginning 11,000 years ago was one of rapid warming, with the ocean rising rapidly. By 7500 years ago, the great waterfall by the Golden Gate was silenced as the surging ocean topped its rim and by 6500 years ago, the San Francisco Bay was once again filled. This led to reeds and marshes forming along the shores which attracted fish, birds, and shellfish, and the reeds could be made into dandy shelters, canoes, and baskets. Almost 5,000 years ago, this ready food and raw materials lured the Yelamu, a part of a larger native group known as the Ohlone, to become the first San Franciscans. They established a tiny village among the reeds and sand dunes on a small cove known as Yerba Buena on the Bay on the eastern side of the future city, next to where the great TransAmerica tower stands today.

The Yelamu built another small village

where the Bay Bridge connects to San Francisco today, and the third next to a natural lake in the western part of the City where they lived peacefully and prosperously for about 47 centuries until the Spanish arrived in 1776.

The 18th century was a period of Russian

expansion. By the mid-century, the Russians had moved east and occupied all of Siberia and seized what is now Alaska, set up a capital there in Sitka, and headed south. King Carlos of Spain was horrified and cast about for a way to protect Spain’s claim to California, called the Viceroy of New Spain, which was complicated by the fact that there were no Spaniards in California. To blunt the Russian advance, the King funded a “boots on the ground” plan based in Mexico City, to establish 21 “Missions” along the California coastline. Each Mission would essentially be a plantation/ranch with cattle, vineyards, orchards, and other produce growing, a church with priests, a small detachment of Spanish soldiers, and a handful of Spanish citizens who would live in the adjacent pueblo, or village, with Native Americans doing most of the work in a serf-like role.

86 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

King Carlos’ plan worked, the 21

Missions were built, and without them, California would almost certainly have been claimed by the Russians, and if not by them, by France or Great Britain. Instead, it remained New Spain. In 1776, Mission Delores was established in what became San Francisco, and a Presidio (“Fort” in Spanish) was built by the Golden Gate to defend the tiny settlement. Spain soon entered a period of rapid decline, which became a crisis when it’s main source of revenue for centuries, a mine in Bolivia, ceased to produce prodigious quantities of gold and silver. Napoleon took notice, and in 1808 sent his armies into Madrid and conquered Spain, then put his brother, a Bonaparte, on the Spanish throne. You can imagine how this development was received here in New Spain. For Americans, this would be like Putin putting his brother in the White House. A revolt broke out immediately, gathered steam for years, succeeded in 1821, and resulted in California becoming Alta California, the northernmost state of the new nation of Mexico.

Texas declared its independence anyway, became the Lone Star Republic, and after nine years as a nation, asked the United States in 1845 if it could join as a new state. The US said, “yes” and Mexico, which still claimed Texas, declared war on the US in an effort to block the annexation. This was San Francisco’s first intersection with destiny.

On July 9, 1846, a US warship, the USS

Mexico subsequently got into a quarrel in

1835 with its other northern state, Texas. Mexico’s military dictator, Santa Ana, then invaded Texas, was himself captured, and as a condition of his release agreed to allow Texas to secede. But when freed, he reneged on his promise.

Portsmouth, sailed through the Golden Gate, dropped anchor in Yerba Buena Cove, where downtown San Francisco is today. The captain, Lt. John Montgomery, and his 70 heavily armed Marines and 20 Navy sailors, paddled ashore in their landing craft, marched to the public square (later renamed Portsmouth Square) and raised the American flag on the Mexican custom’s house flagpole. Losing the war badly, Santa Anna was offered $20 million in gold to surrender and construe the US annexation of the entire American Southwest (nearly half of what was then Mexico), as a “purchase”. He agreed. The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed in February 1848, became effective on July 4, 1849, and on September 9, 1850, California joined the United States as it’s 31st state.

Magazine Name or url

In the meantime, on August 30, 1847, the locals changed the name of the Pueblo of Yerba Buena to the City of San Francisco. Then, on January 24, 1848, in San Francisco’s second intersection with destiny, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill, about 130 miles from San Francisco.

It took the rest of the year for the immense scale of the discovery to be appreciated. Then all hell broke loose. By early 1849, over a 100,000 so-called 49’ers were headed to San Francisco, the vanguard of an eventual 300,000 to 500,000 gold seekers who traveled from 19 countries to California, the greatest peacetime migration of all time. This great adventure captured the world’s imagination, becoming the second most reported event in the entire 19th century, as journalist from virtually every metropolitan newspaper in the Western world traveled to California to cover the exciting event. The US Geological Survey determined that during the first five years of the Gold Rush, an astonishing $15 billion (in 2012 dollars) was picked up or panned out of the streams in the Sierra Nevada, an unimaginable sum given that the average worker then made $9-12 a month.

87

The vast majority of gold seekers came to San Francisco in sailing ships. The captains and crew of these vessels were paid a relative pittance compared with what could be earned, even in manual labor, in San Francisco, or better yet, panned in the many gold bearing streams in the Sierra Nevada mountains. As a result, essentially all of the crews of all of the ships arriving in San Francisco harbor during the Gold Rush, immediately abandoned their ships. By the end of 1849, there were hundreds of these huge abandoned ships blocking the port, each still full of as much as 200 tons of valuable cargo – whiskey, champagne, furniture, cloth, guns and ammunition -- to name only a few common cargo items brought to California. But there was no one around to salvage this valuable cargo, as every abled bodied man was either making a fortune off the gold seekers or up panning gold himself. Indeed, the cargo, stored in the hole of the ships 18 feet or so below decks, would have taken months of labor to unload. The ships were made of wood, had been at sea for months, were leaking, and without attention, they quickly sank to the floor of the Bay so that soon all that was visible of them were the tips of their masts, which were quickly cut off for firewood.

89

In one fell stroke, this inspired decision got

rid of the smell, removed the sand dunes which where were blocking development, enabled the city to expand eastward where its new, unblocked port could be adjacent to deep water, and filled its coffers with cash.

The sand and other landfill was dumped

Four factors, (1) this blockage of the

port by a huge mass of abandoned ships, combined with (2) the smell of the garbage and waste thrown into the small shallow cove, (3) the instant City’s desperate need for cash, and (4) the fact that the early 49’ers called San Francisco “Sand Francisco”, due to the enormous sand dunes blocking development all over the city, 80 feet high in many places, were all instantly linked by a United States Supreme Court case in Arkansas. That case gave states jurisdiction over shallow water ports and waterways. The Governor immediately seized on this decision and offered to sell the Cove to the City of San Francisco and split the proceeds 25% to the State and 75% to the City, if the city would handle the sale. The instant city was awash in gold pouring in from the “diggings” to the east, so the mayor leaped at the chance. He quickly surveyed the Cove, roped it off in “water lots”, and immediately auctioned off the entirety of Yerba Buena Cove for cash. Buyers had to fill in the lots themselves with sand or rocks. As soon as the buyer could show that a horses’ hooves were dry at high tide on his lot, the city handed over a deed.

atop the abandoned ships, and they are still there to this day, beneath San Francisco, still full of their original cargo. Much of the financial district or the City of Francisco is built over these ships. When some tall skyscrapers were built, like the TransAmerica Pyramid, to protect them from earthquakes the builders dug deep down to anchor pilings into the bedrock. When they did, they “discovered” many long-forgotten Gold Rush ships. In the case of the Pyramid, they dug up the Niantic, a famous ship built in Connecticut in the 1830’s which had traveled all over the world, including running the British Opium Blockade in Canton, China in the 1840s. The Niantic had been buried 144 years, still full of many cases of 1840’s vintage French champagne, which was salvaged intact. Because the perfect temperature to store champagne is about 56 degrees F, and the temperature where the cargo was, in the wet sand about 30 feet below the street level in San Francisco was exactly 56 degrees, the champagne was perfectly preserved, and ultimately sold at auction for the benefit of charity for as much as $250,000 a bottle.

The Gold Rush was fueled by “placer gold”, meaning gold found in sand in creeks and rivers. “Placer” means sand in Spanish. This gold began to run out after about five years and San Francisco fell into a deep recession in the late 1850’s from which it would never have recovered but for the discovery in 1859 of the Comstock Lode, a massive deposit of silver in western Nevada. This enormous find turned out to be three to five TIMES more valuable than even the Gold Rush. And this discovery was manned, financed, provisioned, and engineered almost exclusively by San Franciscans, and as a result its enormous wealth stayed in and vastly enriched San Francisco. Dynamite was invented in Sweden by Alfred Nobel in 1867 and it quickly played a key role in opening up the American West to safe, hard rock gold mining, which took off in the 1870’s, also almost exclusively financed and provisioned by San Franciscans. In 1869, the transcontinental railroad reached San Francisco, linking it at last by a straightforward overland route to the rest of the United States and opening its economy to the rest of the nation. These three events, the Gold Rush in 1849, the Silver Rush in 1859, and the railroad in 1869, marked the key dates and events which fueled San Francisco’s rise in the mid-nineteenth century to being the most populous and influential city west of Chicago.

So, there we were, Lee Westwood, Simon

Dyson, John Daly, and me, getting prepared for the second round of the 2018 Czech Open at the gorgeous Albatross Golf Resort, just outside the city of Prague surrounded by the Alps in Central Europe. Now I was coaching a couple of players, not playing myself, but this memory has stuck with me as one of those moments a person never forgets. Lee and John were talking casually about the dinner the night before, Simon and I were laughing about something, and Lee asked me, “What’s so funny A.J.?” I knew that Lee knew my name, but I was completely taken aback by the fact he was actually talking to me in this casual manner. My life, coming from small town America, had taken a turn that felt both strange and amazing at the same time. I remember thinking to myself, ‘How did I get here?’.

There in the Czech Republic, he worked at

the beautiful European Tour venue Karlštejn Golf Resort as the Head Professional, and soon started a very successful project called GolfLab Academy. A.J. is one of the most successful coaches in Central Europe and developed all levels of talent from beginners to Tour players.

Marion Duvernay currently on the

European Ladies Tour, Katerina Ruzickova, David Prochazka, Filip Mruzek, Jan Cafourek, former Ryder Cup player Simon Dyson, Anton Haig are just a few names he has worked with over the years. Division 1 superstars, European and Asian Tour players are all a part of his coaching history.

A.J., as he is known by all who know him,

has a unique skill set and wealth of experience in his relatively short golf career starting in 2000. He is the founder of A.J. Mac Golf Industries, has opened two locations in Western New York, and joined the PGA of America before moving abroad to Central Europe in the Czech Republic in 2001 as part of a project to westernize golf in the region by then President of the Golf Federation Hanuše Goldsheider.

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

In 2015, A.J. took another step forward,

pushing golf in Czech to an international level. He pioneered, on his own, the opening of the first Golf Channel Academy in Europe, now called The Golf Academy he opened two locations in Prague, one at the lovely Black Bridge Golf Resort, and the other at Golf House, a huge German owned retail store with an indoor studio. Utilizing modern tech such as TrackMan, FlightScope, K-Vest, and more, he kept on pushing ahead.

A PGA professional, certified TPI fitness

instructor, HearMath specialist, Seven Habits facilitator, self-studied bio mechanist, and kinesiologist, A.J. brings to his clients a well-rounded level of instruction and service. A.J. also works as a life coach-consultant to companies and executives in Prague and understands the value of the mental side of the game. Although he is educated in all the little details and understands the technical side very deeply, he still believes that a simple approach for most players is most effective. His method called G-RAM, although deeply rooted in science and sacred geometry, truly simplifies the application for his students and it has been extremely successful as a result.

101

As the creator of a golf method called “G-RAM, The a Golden Ratio of Angular Momentum”, and founder of the company

G-RAM Sports which is dealing with ground breaking design in golf equipment and other sports applications, A.J. is quietly trying to change the way we think about the game.

A.J. believes that G-RAM can bring the

two approaches of coaching together and solve the mystery of whether or not there is one method for all or if every swing unique. His belief is that both are true. There are certain fundamentals that all of us can learn, but the result is always unique and individual. G-RAM is a ‘method less method!’.

102 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

Through his years of studying the best

professionals and coaches, he created a screening process that allows coaches to speed up the process of finding a player’s optimal swing based on fundamental scientific data, which was not ever the case in the history of the game. In his words, “each player’s swing and method is

unique to them, but there are constants that we all must adhere to”.

His mission to help revive the game he

loves, and also help players reach heights not before imagined is well under way. It’s time to bring this knowledge back to the U.S. market, while maintaining his businesses in Europe. A.J. and G-RAM are about to take off and start a new era, and it’s time we all get on board.

A.J. Is currently working for Avid Indoor

A Day in D.C. Written By Randy Weckerly

Washington D.C. is twenty

minutes away and one finds an open day on the calendar, so what better thing to do than visit our nation’s Capital.

It was a beautiful cloudless sky supported

by a cool but comfortable temperature for walking. When you visit D.C., wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk. Also, finding a place to park is not easy. Thankfully, I took a picture of the street cross walks when leaving the garage, as we might still be looking for my car if I had not.

The U.S. Capitol was radiant and

Miss Kira and I were on a four-day

mission to visit Master Chef Dave Trevelino at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. As one of our priorities, we support Chef Dave’s mission to raise travel and feed our U.S. Navy sailors aboard nuclear submarines during the Christmas holidays. However, on our way to the TPC Potomac we had a very engaging at visiting the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and walking to the White House.

demonstrates a strength of purpose. I am always truly humbled by our nation’s power and might emanating through the architecture of this building. Miss Kira and I did read many of the plaques around the grounds of the Capitol. Heroes from many wars find their stories etched into the stone. I am told I am a fourth cousin of Ulysses S Grant and found a picture or two taken there somewhat memorable.

The highlight of our day was our time at the “Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum”. The story of the Wright Brothers,

etchings in their journals and their belief they could fly is compelling. We spent a great deal of time reading about their life’s adventure. And of course, their success was on full display in front of us.

The “Spirit of St. Louis” to the Neal

Armstrong’s space suit can all be seen at the museum. The size and magnitude of the Apollo Program, lunar lander, Skylab and Russia’s Soyuz Space capsule were extraordinary. One could find it imperatively impossible to comprehend that from John F. Kennedy’s “We will go to the Moon” speech September 12, 1962, to landing men on the moon seven years later, the United States accomplished the mission.

We did find time to attend a movie in the museum featuring “D-Day Omaha Beach at Normandy” and the heroes from around the

world that landed under the worst conditions to free Europe. Its compelled Miss Kira and I to promise on our visit to France that Omaha Beach will be our first stop. Our nation’s heroes are buried there, and we want to give tribute.

We left the “Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum” to walk

to The White House. An easy thirty-minute walk took us to the front door and varied protests ongoing at the time. None were threatening, some were simply speeches by “wanna be” Presidential Candidates, with no one listening. It was interesting to see the presence of arms security on most blocks along with snipers on every corner of The White House roof. One can only imagine how secured the grounds are at this point in time.

As the sun set, it was a humbling and

satisfying walk back to find our car. We were not sure where we had parked, but after an hour of walking using GPS, we found we were nowhere near where I had taken a picture earlier in the day of the crosswalk sign by our parking garage. Upon hailing an Uber driver, in minutes she found our garage and we left cheerful in heading back to our Potomac destination.

Have you ever heard of the Key Marco

Cat?... No? Really? … At only six inches tall, this world famous charismatic, anthropomorphic feline statue has been described as one of the finest pieces of pre-Columbia Native American art ever discovered in North America. Unearthed in an 1896 Key Marco excavation, this “kitty” was carved by the wonderfully creative Calusa Indians from native hardwood, yet somehow, it survived! The Key Marco Cat, on loan from the Smithsonian Institution Museum of Natural History, recently returned “home” to Marco Island is an effort by the residents to educate and inspired all ages about the fascinating, and artistic, natural history of the Southwest, or “Paradise” coast of Florida.

Situated serenely, on the largest of the Ten Thousand Islands, just 17 miles south from the glamour of Naples and a half hour drive from the serene beauty of The Everglades, resides another one of Marco Island’s treasures, though this beauty is not nearly 1,500 years old. Much like the accomplished handcrafters within the Calusa Indian tribe, the ingenious members of the JW Marriott family of hotels have sculpted an innovative, modern-day artifact, the brand new eight-story Lanai Tower at their Marco Island Beach Resort. An integral part of a three-year, $320 million makeover and brand conversion project, the re-imagined Lanai Tower and Suites is an upscale, adults-only, curated escape, masterfully designed with more than 100,000 square feet of technologically-integrated meeting and event space, several new culinary experiences, private roof-top pool, and a state-of-the-art gaming venue, all overlooking the azure waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Ushering in a new era for the iconic,

810-room, the Balinese-style JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort, is the addition of the Lanai Tower and its Paradise by Sirene experience.

“Begins the next chapter of our resort’s story, we embrace our celebrated past on Marco Island and now welcome a new level of luxury by joining JW Marriott’s global portfolio of exceptional properties,” says Sharon Lockwood, General Manager at JW Marriott Marco Island. And what a colorful past this crescent-shaped island has had! This includes the legacy of the Native Americans, the development of the clam digging and fishing industries, and the heroic civil engineering projects of the 1940s and 1950s when the Mackle family dreamed of creating a “Hawaii of the East” as they dredged through the now protected mangroves to create canals and t housands of waterfront home sites.

Much like the transformation of the JW

Marriott Resort on its shores, Marco Island is a comfortable blend of the old and new, an unspoiled five-mile long sugar-cane beach, charming homes and resorts slow-paced living in flip flops and adrenaline-pumping water sports. Here visitors from around the world, enjoy the experience of the harmony of comfort and fine Gulf-front living within a setting of natural s plendor. “Unique to southwest Florida, something that sets the JW Marriot Marco Island Beach Resort apart, is that it is just footsteps from the front door of The Everglades. This creates a juxtaposition of the wildness of nature at the National Park next to the serenity at our Beach Resort,” shared Amanda Cox, Director of Sales and Marketing.

Traditionally renowned as one of the

Sunshine State’s most gratifying family-friendly escapes, complete with a Tiki Kids Pool featuring a supervised waterslide and waterfall, the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort is an idyllic coastal retreat providing a dazzling array of beach activities for all generations of families. While the older children and adults can enjoy a fast-paced guided wave runner adventure tour through the mangrove islands, the Tiki Tribe Discovery Camp will inspire the young ones to have fun while learning about the natural ecosystem of the Ten Thousand Islands. The Sailing and Shelling tour provides the opportunity to spot bald eagles, American White Pelicans, dolphins, manatees and who know what else. Upon return from the day’s outdoor excursions, oblige yourself at the The SPA by JW, a fresh, innovative and upscale sanctuary designed to demystify and reimagine the spa experience, with treatments based on four core benefits states: calm, indulge, new and invigorate. Or, simply sign the entire family up for a complimentary kids and teens yoga program, a restful and engaging activity (for kids 4 years old and up).

The JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort is considered by many to be one of the premier golfing destinations in America, (The World Golf Awards, an organization committed to celebrating and rewarding excellence in golf tourism, world-class courses and golf destinations, kicked off their 6th annual awards by honoring it as “North America’s Best Golf Hotel 2019” and “Florida’s Best Golf Hotel 2019.” These accolades recognize the resort as a whole as well as its specifically two golf courses, The Rookery and The Hammock Bay Golf Course). The Marco Island/Naples area abounds with stunning, natural designs. Guests of the JW have access to two private golf clubs, both just a short 15-minute complimentary shuttle ride from the Beach Resort.

The Rookery, or “bird sanctuary,” at Marco blends a resort private course atmosphere with stunningly tranquil surroundings populated by abundant wildlife including alligators, and blue herons. Boasting a recent introduction of Paspalum turf grass and all new, re-designed bunkering by acclaimed architects Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy, The Rookery is carved from 240 acres of most-draped Cypress and swaying Australian palm trees. Hammock Bay Golf & Country Club, on the other hand, is routed through dramatic sand dune formations, stands of live oaks, and, rare for South Florida, rolling terrain! Recognized as a “Gold Certified Signature Sanctuary” by Audubon International, Hammock Bay is one of just 45 designed communities in the world. Nice.

Can we get back to Sirene Now? “She

really is incredible, there’s nothing quite like her,” proclaims Sharon Lockwood, JW Marriott Marco Island’s General Manager. Guests of the experience called “Friends of Sirene” at the new Lania Tower, for example, have their very own comfy lounge for check-in, where glasses of champagne are served to celebrate their arrival. Electronic bracelets are then presented, providing access to elevators and to unlock their luxurious Balinese-inspired suite, all with upgraded amenities such as Nespresso coffee makers, Tivoli sound systems, glass showers with benches separate water closets, an entertainment area that can be closed off from the bedroom for special gatherings, and glass balconies providing unobstructed views of the Gulf. Sirene’s bracelets also ensures guests of the Lanai Tower access to several of their very own amenities, including that adult-exclusive rooftop pool, an adult-only fitness center, and a private slice of sugar-white beach complete with chaises, umbrellas, and your very own beach butler-- Also adults only. Don’t be surprised by the way, particularly if it is an excessively warm day, if “Sirene” makes her presence known again delivering chilled eucalyptus face towels, an off-menu signature cocktail, or possibly a few champagne-soaked frozen grapes on skewers. Yep, she’s something!

As described by the Resort, Sirene is also

your “Signature Muse,” or hostess and vacation planner, and guests are provided with her private line upon arrival enabling them to keep in touch via text for any special requests throughout their stay at the JW. She’ll sign you up for an airboat tour of The Evergades; a scenic cycling tour of the island where you’ll experience rare tropical plants and trees, distinctive and protected wildlife including exotic birds, manatees and dolphins feeding and playing in the many waterways; ancient Indian shell mounds; and the fresh water spring where the Spanish refilled their water stores before the arduous journey back home. What about a tee time for golf? A relaxing spa treatment? Dinner reservation? Or any of the unique local excursions via land or sea? The Paradise by Sirene experience also includes a complimentary breakfast daily in Tesoro (complete with an omelette bar, pancakes, fruit, selection of teas and coffee, pastries and more), the Lanai Tower’s chic, again adults-only, Mediterranean-inspired restaurant with panoramic vistas of the Gulf.

Transitioning from family fun during the

day to adult-centered nightlife after dark, the Lanai Tower’s 10K Alley is the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort’s state-of-the-art gaming emporium. Conveying the feel of a modern-day distillery-warm, polished, and industrial- 10K Alley serves up over 60 Florida- brewed craft beer and barrel-aged bourbons, including rare and limited production spirits such as Old Forester Birthday, Pappy Van Winkle 23, and Kentucky Owl. Some of the bourbons have been created exclusively for 10K in a partnership between the JW Marriott Marco Island, Jack Daniels and Woodford Reserve. Or simply treat yourself to a “wicked” 10K milkshake at the circular bar before bringing your “A game” to six lanes of Highway 66 bowling, a six-hole themed (glow-in-the-dark) miniature golf course, pool tables, and sports simulators for virtual reality experience in golf, hockey, to hunting and clay shooting. 10K Alley is truly a unique kid-friendly but adult-forward experience and has been referred to as Dave & Busters on steroids (definitely a big set up from Dave & Buster’s- well-thought-out luxurious culinary options, craft cocktails, indoor puttputt golf, mini bowling). It pulsates with a special vibe rare to Southwest Florida. Although located in the Lanai Tower, families and children are welcome until 10 P.M. and they are also encouraged to enjoy 10K Alley during those rare, suspicious weather days on Marco Island. After 10 P.M. the gaming emporium transitions to adults only.

Marco Island, Quinn’s and Kane, present a sophisticated array of lunch and dinner items including a Polynesian pupo platter, teriyaki chicken, fresh shrimp, and the best cheeseburgers in Florida. In Florida, mandarin salad, crispy wonton chips with pineapple jam, beef spareribs, Vietnamese-inspired sandwiches with shaved pork, and grouper tacos, plus signature cocktails like the grapefruit-elderflower margarita or toasted coconut mojito. Delivering a South Pacific theme under an open-air thatched A-frame, with some of the tables directly in the sand, Kane Tiki Bar & Grill offers an environment worthy of a passport. Taking its name from the Polynesian god of creation and growth, environment worthy of a passport. Taking its name from the Polynesian god of creation and growth, Kane’s menu reflects the Balinese and Asian style found throughout the resort. The bar features “Craft on Draft” with a selection of eight beers, each representing a Gulf coast brewery from St. Pete to Islamorada down in The Keys. Beach bar classics with creative names inspired by the destination such as the Kane Koolada, Marco-Rita, Mana ‘Tea’, and Turtle Season ‘Lights Out’ are all enthusiastically prepared. Or, upon request, the mixologists will shake up made-toshare concoctions, including the No Wake Zone and Gulf Breeze, each serving up to three “beach bums”. Hipa Hipa (CHEERS in Polynesian)!

& Conventions Gold Key Award 33 times since 1978, the JW Marriott Marco Island’s recent makeover of its JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort ensures the Paradise Coast can now compete with the east coast of Florida, just a scenic two hour drive through the Everglades away, for the larger meetings and events. But what the JW Marriott is probably most proud of are the “looks of enchantment” on the children’s faces as they enjoy the Balinese fire dancer twirl his torches skyward during the nightly sunset celebration at their Beach Resort. Director of Sales & Marketing, Cox concludes: “This really was a redefining of paradise, where we have tried to position ourselves to be the leader in approachable luxury. But we don’t want to lose our traditional island-time, relaxed vibe.

We want you to feel comfortable in our new lobby wearing your flip flops.” Like the Key Marco Cat, the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort is one of Marco Islands many treasures, where high tech meets high touch, a destination that expertly interprets the personal predictions of its guests, a place to celebrate life’s grand events, a place of tranquil relaxation balanced with elevated fun and entertainment, and a place of abundant natural Gulf of Mexico facing beauty and golden sunsets… what a find!
