ENTER THE DRAGON! Enterprising Students at Buile Hill Visual Arts College
team of pupils from Buile Hill Visual Arts College entered a Dragons Den style enterprise competition which has been organised by Manchester Airports Group. The team included 6 Year 10 students: Kiana Soleimani, Kerrie O’Connor, Adam Franks, Tilly Clarke, Abbilea Munroe and Jack Ashton led by their art teacher Miss Watts.
A
Students were set the challenge of creating an original gift idea which could be created and sold to raise money for the St Ann’s Hospice. After much deliberation students decided on a final concept based on creating clock from recycling vinyl records. Students designed the images which would be on the records, chose a manufacturing process and purchased materials for the gift. The concept is based around recycling old records through a cut-out technique to create art pieces and clocks. Students decided on 6 well known sayings such as ‘mum’s the word’, ‘variety is the spice of life’, ‘every cloud has a silver lining’ and ‘new kid on the block’ which are the overlays for the clocks. Students created ‘mock up’ designs and then pitched their idea to the dragons last year, on Thursday 10th October for a successful bid of £100 start up loan. The pupils selected a gift, decided on a manufacturing process, sourced and purchased materials for the gift. They then aim to market and sell the gift and create accounts to track monies. The dragons were made up of a panel of senior managers from across Manchester Airport and its service partners 4 LIVE IT LOCAL
who have knowledge and experience of business and the market place. During a two month selling period the winning team is the group with the most profit. The team worked tirelessly selling at Stockport, Bury and Altrincham markets, Manchester Airport Terminal 1 Arrivals and school events. The competition closed on 13th December, and the students managed to sell 281 clocks in total and raised £1,484 for the St Ann’s Hospice - a fantastic result!

Natalie’s Fight: RAISING FUNDS FOR CERVICAL CANCER My name is Natalie Poole. I’m 33 years old and I’ve recently been diagnosed with From left, Sarah Johnson, Stage 4 (advanced) Natalie Poole & Shelly Hollorn Cervical Cancer. Myself and my best friends are staging a red carpet event at Buile Hill Park Hall, 13th Feb 2014 to raise awareness and funds for Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust. The Trust provide invaluable support and information to those affected and promotes the importance of early detection. Since being diagnosed I have met a lot of young ladies with cervical cancer and I believe the government should lower the age for cervical screening. We are aiming to raise £10,000 and would love any donations, help or sponsorship towards this fantastic event.
CERVICAL CANCER AWARENESS NIGHT The evening will start at 7.00pm, and there will be special entertainment including:- live singers, a live band, a DJ & disco and stilt walkers and fire breathers outside the venue! We will be holding an auction and raffle for some amazing prizes. Guests will be served with a hot buffet and free glass of champagne. It will be a ‘dress to impress’ red carpet event. Tickets are £30 each. It’s a great way to support this charity and will be a fabulous night out. For ticket information or to support the event, visit “Natalie’s Fight Like a Girl” on Facebook. Tickets can be bought on www.skiddle.com. To get in touch, contact:Shelly: 07800 905859, or Natalie: 07455 155192

PAINTERS, AUTHORS, ACTORS Buile Hill: A park to inspire them all Buile Hill Park by JM Barett (1914) Painting held at the Salford Museum & Art Gallery
Communing with Nature is said to stimulate creativity, to nourish the spirit, to gladden the heart. If so, then the greensward of Buile Hill Park, rising above the “Dirty Old Town”, immortalised by Ewen McColl, has certainly played its part. Created in large part by the generosity of John Potter, who built Buile Hill House in 1825-27 (incidentally part of the same family which later produced Beatrix Potter of “Peter Rabbit” fame), and willed it and its land to the people of Salford on his death, the Park has felt the tread of many famous people...
Frances Hodgson Burnett [1849-1924] was born in Cheetham Hill. In her youth her family were prosperous but on the death of her father they fell on hard times. They emigrated to the USA where Frances developed her writing talent and eventually restored the family fortunes. Celebrated as the authoress of such popular children’s classics as “Little Lord Fauntleroy, “The Little Princess” and “That Lass o’ Lowries”, all inspired by the land of her birth she met much publishing success on both sides of the Atlantic. This led to frequent visits back to England and eventually to taking residence back in London with frequent visits to Manchester and Pendlebury. She loved Buile Hill and it is said that she wrote most of her most famous and enduring “book in the Park – The Secret Garden”.
L.S.Lowry [1887-1976] our most celebrated local artist, was a regular visitor to the Park as a lunch-time break from his “day job” as a rent collector. He lived in Pendlebury for over 40 years and though his great artistic love was of millscapes rather than landscapes, he enjoyed the fresh air of Buile Hill.

Walter Greenwood [1903-1972] , one of the greatest chroniclers of northern street life and culture in the early 20th Century was born in Ellor St, Pendleton, part of an area (named after neighbouring Hankinson St.) - “Hanky Park”. This he immortalised in his novel of the years of the Great Depression, “Love on the Dole” in 1933. A prolific writer of novels, plays and songs. Greenwood was also a political activist.
Ewan McColl [1915-1989] was born as “Jamie Miller” to Scottish parents in Salford. He became a prominent playwright, poet and songwriter as well as a political activist. With his then wife, the actress Joan Littlewood, he formed The Theatre Workshop in 1945 (when he also changed his name from Miller). Later in life, and with new wife American folk singer Peggy Seeger, he founded the Ballads and Blues Club. They sang as a duo and he composed the still popular song “The First Time Ever I Saw Her Face” and the folk classics the “Manchester Rambler” and, of course, “Dirty Old Town”. It is not known for sure that he composed the latter whilst gazing down on that town from Buile Hill – but it is nice to imagine so. Many others, too numerous to mention, must have enjoyed Buile Hill but perhaps two local lads of more recent years should get a mention…
Albert Finney, formerly of Tootal Drive Primary School, probably dawdled through the Park many a time on his way home to Weaste. Perhaps he also enjoyed a few ‘Saturday Night and Sunday Morning’ experiences before actually making a film of that name. Rehearsing for a later role as “Tom Jones” may also have taken place in the Park! Lasting fame and fortune in many films has been the result. Equally, Robert Powel, star of “the Italian Job”, “Jesus of Nazareth” and “The Thirty Nine Steps”, lived close to the Park and played there as a child, and has fond memories of those days. Hidden Depths: A Local Story Writer Raising Funds for St Ann’s Hospice After reading our Buile Hill Feature in the NovDec13 issue, local resident Simon Williams got in touch with an interesting tale. Simon has recently written a short story centered around Buile Hill House... “I work as a builder in Salford and came across writing purely by chance. Sat at home bored, I wrote a short story and sent it to a few friends who gave me great feedback and said it was funny. So I continued to write more and had a book published called ‘Hidden Depths: Expect the Unexpected’. Later, a girl who had bought it told me she was getting help from St. Ann’s Hospice, so I decided to help the Hospice by donating £1 from every book sold. My second book is called ‘Hidden Depths: Payback Time’ and focusses on a Salford Lad, who is not your average lad and buys Buile Hill Museum and
gives it back to the people of Salford. A tale of how a loveable rogue makes his way through life! We held a book launch at the Candy Skull Tattoo shop in Swinton, raising £250 for St. Ann's. It’s already getting great reviews and you can buy it from Amazon; St. Ann’s Hospice in Little Hulton and their charity shop at the Ellesmere Centre, Walkden; Candy Skull Tattoo in Swinton; and now from Waterstones!” FREE GIVEAWAY We have one signed copy to give away! WINTER BEAUTY TIPS! In winter, the cold temperatures and wind, coupled with heating and air conditioning, can play havoc with your skin and hair. So, we asked local professionals what they recommend for combatting the winter blues!
For the Face... DEHYDRATION: A change of season usually means a change in your skin condition! Turning the heating up means your superficial skin cells will be depleted of water. So hydrate your skin by using products containing cross-linked hyaluronic acid (XLHA). Holding 100,000 times its weight in water, it plumps and hydrates skin cells. Dermalogica have an excellent range of hydrating products with XLHA. PROTECTION: If you love running outdoors in winter, use a product that repairs and protects the skin’s barrier function (your skin’s natural protective layer) and helps to retain water and moisture in the skin. Products such as “Barrier Repair” by Dermalogica will do just this. It contains no water and acts as a second skin to protect from the elements. Also great for those with sensitive dry and environmentally sensitised skin! Worsley Laser Clinic Roe Green
For the Body... MOISTURISE AND MASSAGE: Blood and Lymph fluids help to keep your skin nourished, but in the winter when we become colder, our blood flows less freely so we need to compensate for this by using extra moisturiser and massaging the skin to encourage blood flow and toxin eliminations. Also, using a gentle exfoliator, not just on your face and hands, but also on your body, will brighten the skin by removing the dead skin cells. Massaging your skin in winter is key to improving its appearance, eliminating toxin build up and making you feel better too! PUT SOME COLOUR INTO YOUR LIFE! We all feel a bit gloomy in the winter so brighten your mood by applying some False Tan! Gone are the days of the dreaded 'orange' tans. Products 22 LIVE IT LOCAL
now come in various shades and contain fantastic skin moisturisers with added vitamins too. You can have it professionally done at a local salon, but here are some tips if doing it yourself at home:n Wax 48 hours before n Exfoliate & moisturise your skin 24 hours before n Remove all make-up and deodorant just before tan application n To prolong the colour of your tan, apply light moisturiser after your daily showers. Massages, Pamper Packages and Tanning are all available at Serenity! Serenity Lounge Walkden
For the Hair... When winter weather hits, don’t let a bad hair day last a whole season. Here are a few tips to help you winter-proof your hair and scalp:-
LOCK IN THAT STYLE! with the right products... n Combat frizz by using L’Anza Healing Oil to prevent moisture getting back into the hair. n L’Anza Healing Volume range is great for body and volume. Use with a set of sleep-in rollers for the perfect bouncy hairstyle! n Carry a mini hairspray with you to tackle those wind swept fly-aways. FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS: Hair-ups will ensure your hair stays immaculate even on the windiest of days! LOOK AFTER YOUR SCALP: Changes in weather, coupled with central heating, can cause scalps to peel and dry out, so use a good moisture treatment to replace the lost moisture. For more advice tailored to your hair, why not pop in to the Salon. Hair Eden, Roe Green PLEASE REMEMBER TO MENTION LIVE IT LOCAL WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS

Why is a Healthy Diet Important?
Get Fit and Have Fun Outdoors!
The general population needs to have a balanced, healthy diet as it provides the energy and nutrient required to survive and stay healthy.
Remember being pushed out the door by Mum to go play outside “because it’s good for you"? It turns out Mum knew what she was talking about!
Combining a healthy diet with an active lifestyle has huge benefits and helps reduce the risk of heart disease, cancer and obesity.
A gym may seem tempting with air-conditioning, TV’s and machines that "do the work for you!" But do those comforts really add up to a fitter more motivated and confident version of you?
Herbalife have a 30 year proven track record in helping people lead healthy active lifestyles through providing unrivalled nutrition and promoting a healthy lifestyle. Take a FREE Wellness Evaluation and we can personalise a nutrition programme that is right for your needs and your lifestyle to achieve your goals whether they be to:n Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle n Lose Weight n Improve your Sports Performance n Better your Personal Care

LLEYTON’S CHRISTMAS PARTY! Niemann Pick Disease Group (UK) Annual Children’s Party at Swinton Park
In the NovDec13 issue we published an article appealing for help for Lleyton’s, and the NPDG’s, annual Christmas party. Here are some of the photos of the fantastic, star-studded event which took place at Swinton Park Golf Course. On Saturday, 7th December 2013, the people of Salford, Swinton and surrounding areas made it possible for children like Lleyton Coombes, who have a life limiting condition called Niemann Pick Disease Type C, enjoy their annual Christmas party and make lasting memories for the families. Chief coordinator, Gayle Gamble who is one of the Pride in Lleyton founders said, “The day went better than anyone expected and it didn’t cost anything everyone donated their time and expertise for the event. We were so lucky to have Coleen Nolan and her husband Ray Fensome attend, who help us whenever they can. Plus, on board for the first time were Chelsee Healey and Laine Management Casting Agency. Both Coleen & Chelsee posed for hundreds of pictures with the kids, and Coleen had a dance with two of the girls to ‘I’m in the Mood for Dancing’ and made their day.” Gayle did an amazing job and we’d to congratulate Gayle on pulling it all together!
