Pride in Lleyton Appeal

THE LAST NIEMANN-PICK UK CHRISTMAS PARTY #makingmemories

Star Guest Coleen Nolan with Lleyton Saturday 5th December 2015, 11am to 3pm. Can we make this the party to end all parties? This will be the last party for the group. We have already had a really good response to this year’s party and the bulk of what we needed was pledged on the day at last year’s party 2014. However, we do still need some items to finish it off (if it not listed and you think you have something we would like, please get in touch). We are also trying to get a few superheroes to perform a dance routine for the children. We have 1 volunteer who is looking for 4 to 5 others to join them - are you up for it ?

SUPPORT LOCAL CHILDREN IN NEED AT CHRISTMAS Christmas should be about more than survival. But for one in three local children whose families struggle on a day-to-day basis to make ends meet, it is just that. We want to ensure all children can join in the fun and festivities by giving families on a low income food and toys to help with the expense of the season. In 2014 we helped over 2,000 families and 4,500 children at Christmas time and this year we expect the numbers referred to us for help to grow. Help our Christmas Appeal by donating non-perishable food, treats, and new toys suitable to give as presents to children up to the age of 12. Our van is collecting Christmas donations from homes, offices and churches around Salford from now up until Friday 11th December. Call 0161 834 3140 to arrange a collection or find out more at www.woodstreetmission.org.uk.

Mission Christmas 2015 The statistics are still standing. 1 in 3 children are living in severe poverty in Greater Manchester. This means there are children going to bed without a hot meal in a house without central heating. As Christmas approaches, 150,000 children in our city will not have a present to open on Christmas Day. Key 103’s Cash for Kids Mission Christmas looks to brighten Christmas for these children by asking you to buy an extra present when doing your Christmas shopping. Last year, Manchester took the appeal by storm as 2,000 businesses and 300 schools across the city signed up to support our campaign. We smashed our target to raise £1.6m worth

of toys and delivered presents to over 68,683 children across Manchester. The support and generosity of the people of Manchester was overwhelming, and we are asking for your help again this year as we are even more determined to help local children and ensure as many of them as possible in Greater Manchester wake up to a present this Christmas. Mission Christmas will NOT change the poverty statistics for our city BUT Mission Christmas WILL make a difference to so many families on Christmas Day. Appeal Launch: Mon 16th November Last Donation Date: Tues 22nd December

From Grenache With Love

Top tips for

Christmas This festive season, why not use a helping hand from Chef/ Proprietor Mike Jennings. Mike has been working since September on some beautifully bespoke products straight from the kitchen at Grenache for you to enjoy in the comfort of your own home this Christmas time!

For a few tips to ensure you have a perfect Christmas dinner, who better to ask than Chef-Proprietor, Mike Jennings, of multi-award winning, fine dining restaurant...Grenache! d Don’t forget to let your turkey rest after cooking for that juicy finish to the meat. REMEMBER, it takes 40 mins for every KG as a rule and don’t forget to baste for that wonderful golden finish. d Try our ‘Roasted Garlic, Rosemary & Pink Peppercorn Oil’ over the top of your roasties for that added herby finish. d Cranberry sauce is a massive part of your traditional Turkey dinner. We’re using foraged English cranberries this year. Remember to make it early to enhance the flavour!

From Homemade Oils to Chutneys, Cheese Hampers to Vanilla Infused Whisky... Contact Karen to enquire about our Christmas gift range at

info@grenacherestaurant.co.uk

d Make the most amazing Turkey gravy by straining off all of the bird’s juices into a pan, add a splash of port, with a little bit or corn flour and some cold water. Job done!

Your Beauty Problems Answered Q: I have red veins on my nose and cheeks can I get rid of, or reduce them? A: Yes you can try the IPL treatment which we get fantas c results with. You will need a consulta on and patch test first. Q: What treatment do you have for smokers lips? I have lots of lines above my upper lip. A: Our qualified nurse carries out a wide range of injectable treatments. Dermal fillers are great for long term results. Q: I have a red lump on my nose and I would like to get it treated is this possible? A: We would firstly recommend a free consulta on and skin scan analysis. We would then determine

if the lesion is treatable. If it’s a vascular lesion we can treat it with our pulsed light laser machine. Q: Does laser work on red hairs? A: Our laser treatment works by melanin absorbing light therefore will not work on blonde, white, grey or ginger hairs. Q: Do you treat teen acne? A: Yes, however under 18’s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We recommend a free consulta on as there are various op ons. If you have a beauty problem or ques on, tweet @WorsleyLaser or text for an immediate response. We will also respond in the next edi on of On Our Doorstep. We will not print personal details.

Keep Your Energy Levels Up This Winter!

It’s not uncommon to lose motivation during the winter months. Putting 100% into training when the evenings are getting darker and the days are getting wetter is hard. It’s natural and you’re feeling just like 90% of other people but it’s because of these reasons that it is even more important to make sure that both your nutrition and supplements are correct, not only to improve your physique aesthetically, but also for your health & fitness. A low carbohydrate, high protein and high fat diet will ensure that your body fat isn’t increased but you will still have high energy levels throughout the day. Your meals eaten little and often will ensure that blood sugar levels stay stable throughout the day preventing a spike in insulin which causes fat storage.

Supplements are there to do just that, supplement a balanced diet, and the ones I would recommend especially throughout the ‘cold season’ are:n Vitamin C n High EPA Omega 3’s n Multivitamins n ZMA’s Although not essential, these supplements will help to keep your immune system performing at a high standard which reduces your risk of catching illnesses. They will also keep you feeling energetic and happy which will prevent you from ‘cheating’ on your diet! Shine a light for a loved one this Christmas St Ann’s Hospice is giving local people the chance to remember their loved ones in a very special way this Christmas, with their Light up a Life appeal. The appeal sees people from across Greater Manchester dedicating a light on one of the hospice’s Christmas trees which shine with hundreds of lights throughout the local area, each dedicated to someone special. Some people dedicate lights to remember those they’ve lost, others to celebrate someone they cannot be with at Christmas. Those dedicating a light make a donation to St Ann’s, ensuring the hospice can care for even more local people each year when they need it most.

As part of this appeal, the hospice also holds Light up a Life services, which allow people to come together to reflect, celebrate, and to see the lights switched on. Services are ticketed and take place at Manchester Cathedral, St Peter’s Church in Hale and at the Little Hulton and Heald Green hospice sites. If you are interested in taking part in a service to celebrate someone you can’t be with this Christmas, or would like to dedicate a light to someone special, please call St Ann’s Hospice on 0161 498 3631 or visit www.sah.org.uk/light. Light Up a Life Service - St Ann’s Little Hulton Sunday, 13th December: 4.00pm (outdoors) Tickets FREE, but must book in advance

Local History

Hanged, Drawn and Quartered... The life and times of St. Ambrose Barlow In today’s Ecumenical world, where there is mutual respect and interaction between those of different faiths, it is hard to imagine that this country was once riven by religious persecution, often of the most brutal kind.

THE REFORMATION But such was often the case in the events that followed the Reformation that was instituted by King Henry Vlll, a violent upheaval that initially had more to do with his obsession to secure his dynasty by the production of a male heir, than to religious fervour for reform. We all know that he famously married six wives in attempting to produce a son. To achieve this, when the Established Church of England was the Roman Catholic faith - which denied him divorce from his wife Catherine of Aragon - he was prepared to break with Rome and make his own rules! Accordingly he declared himself Supreme Head of the Church in England. This of course made him the potential owner of all Church property, and ably assisted by Thomas Cromwell, his chief adviser, the Dissolution of the Monasteries and confiscation of all their wealth and lands soon followed. Such institutions had served as hospitals, hostelries and sanctuaries for the mass of the population for hundreds of years, some of these were now distributed as reward for loyalty, to those aristocrats who supported Henry. Unsurprisingly, this did not go down well with many in the population, particularly in the North, which remained staunchly Catholic and resisted the changes to religious practice. They had also many economic complaints, neglect by central Government of poorer regions, they suffered the loss of support from the monasteries. Revolts broke out. First in Lincolnshire, then in Yorkshire and Cumbria. The largest was the “Pilgrimage of Grace”, a gathering of 30,000 under local aristocrats who faced a Royal army of only 12,000. Negotiations were held and the leader of the Royal army, faced by greater numbers, rashly made promises that he knew the King would not keep. The protesters dispersed, the threat was over, the fate of the leaders of the “revolt” was 24 LIVE IT LOCAL

sealed. Henry subsequently had them all, almost 300, arrested and executed. From then on all Catholics were suspected of treason and conformity to the practices of the new faith, was demanded by law. All who continued to follow the old faith were termed “Recusants” and could be liable to confiscation of land and property, imprisonment, possibly death. After Henry’s death, in 1547, he was succeeded by his 9 year old son Edward lV who was schooled by Thomas Cranmer, the Archbishop of Canterbury, a committed Protestant. War between the Protestant and Catholic faiths had broken out all over Europe, eventually leading to a north/south division that generally prevails today. No longer was the Reformation simply a question of faith, but more a political divide. Edward’s short reign ( just 5 years), was characterised by strict conformity to Protestantism - or else... He was succeeded by his elder half sister Mary. The daughter of Catherine of Aragon, she was a zealous Catholic, determined to restore the Old Faith. She initially made promises of toleration but soon started on a path of revenge against all who had followed her predecessors’ policies. She was married to King Philip of Spain, a Catholic monarch and, with his backing had hundreds of leading figures (including Cranmer), arrested and summarily executed. Her reign lasted only 5 years but it earned for her the title of “Bloody Mary”. Elizabeth l was then Queen and she restored the status quo, of repression of Catholics and the viewing of them as potential traitors to the Crown and England. Barred from any public office, shorn of possessions, subject to suspicion, their fugitive priests subject to a death penalty, many conformed in public and worshipped in secret. The Pope had not helped. In 1570 he published an Edict that urged English Catholics to depose their Ruler by any means and in 1588 gave his blessing to the Spanish Armada!

THE PRIEST Into this turmoil of religion and politics a boy was born in 1585, in Barlow Hall, Chorlton-cum-Hardy. The fourth son of a local nobleman, Sir Alexander Barlow, he was christened at Didsbury Chapel as

Edward Barlow. In the previous year his grandfather had died in prison for refusing to conform to the rules of the new religion and two-thirds of his estate had been confiscated. The family had reluctantly conformed thereafter but, in 1607, Edward reverted to Catholicism and travelled to the English College in Douai in France to study for the Priesthood. Subsequently he attended the Royal College of St. Alban in Vallodolid in Spain, before returning to Douai where he became a Benedictine monk and was Ordained a priest in 1617, taking the name “Ambrose”. Ambrose then returned to England, taking up residence at the home of Sir Thomas Tyldesley at Morleys Hall in Astley, a moated house which exists to this day. From there he ministered to the local Catholic population for the next 24 years. He avoided detection by the local Protestant authorities in all those years by being continually on the move, frequently staying with his kinfolk, the Downes family, at Wardley Hall in Swinton (now the Residence of the RC Bishop of Salford). In all his travels he met with the local faithful and said Mass, all in secret. Despite his evasive skills Ambrose was arrested four times, but each time released for lack of evidence. In 1641, King Charles l issued a Proclamation which decreed that all Catholic priests should leave the country within a month or face being arrested and tried for treason - for which the penalty was imprisonment or death. Ambrose’s parishioners implored him to leave, or at least go into hiding, but he refused. He had recently had a stroke which had left him partially paralysed. “Let them fear that have anything to lose, which they are unwilling to part with”, he told them – an evident reference to life and his lack of fear in losing it. On 25th April 1641, Easter Day, Ambrose and his congregation of around 100 were surrounded at Morleys Hall by an armed group of 400 led by the Protestant Vicar of Leigh, Father Ambrose surrendered and his followers were released after their names had been recorded. It is said that before the arrival of the Vicar’s party, Ambrose had sufficient prior warning to enable him to throw the chalice that he had used in the Mass into the FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

Hall’s moat. If true, it remains there still. Ambrose was escorted to a Justice of the Peace by an escort of 60 to guard against any attempt to rescue him and then to Lancaster Castle. On 7th September he appeared before Judge Sir Robert Heath when he professed his adherence to the Catholic faith and defended his actions. The following day, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, he was found guilty and sentenced to death. Two days later he was taken from the Castle, tied to a hurdle drawn by a horse and taken to the public place of execution. There he was hanged, dismembered, quartered and boiled in oil... His head was afterwards exposed on a pike. The King who had specified this penalty and perpetuated the barbaric form of execution was to lose his own head, after the Civil War just a few years later... It was to take another 180 years before religious tolerance prevailed and the Catholic Emancipation Act was passed by Parliament. This removed all but one of the restrictive laws that had prevailed. The only one which still exists? No Roman Catholic may become Monarch.

SAINTHOOD On December 15th 1929 Pope Pius Xl proclaimed Father Ambrose to be “Blessed” (a prelude to Sainthood), in a ceremony in St. Peter’s Basilica. In recognition of the large number of English Catholics who were executed during the Reformation, Pope Paul Vl decreed on 23rd October, 1970 that he was Canonising (creating Saints) of a number of them. These became known as the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. Father Ambrose Barlow was one of them.

RELICS Many relics of St. Ambrose exist. The skull at Wardley Hall is reputed to be his, a hand is at Stanbrook Abbey near Worcester, another hand at Mount Angel Abbey in Oregon USA and his jawbone at the RC church near his birthplace at Barlow Moor. `

People in crisis will be identified by local frontline care professionals, such as health visitors or social workers and given a voucher which they can bring to one of Salford Central Foodbank centres to exchange for their food. 30 LIVE IT LOCAL

Salford Central Foodbank manager Mark Whittington says: “Christmas is a very tough time to be hungry - it’s cold and it is heartbreaking to know you cannot give your children a Christmas treat when everyone else is celebrating. Hidden behind closed doors there are many Salford families with little to look forward to this Christmas, the good news is we can all help. We hope that the people of Salford will join our Christmas hamper campaign to give local people with little to look forward to a happier Christmas.” Donations can be left at the permanent collection points at Sainsbury’s, Regent Road or Tesco, Salford Precinct at any time. Alternatively, donations can be taken to Salford Central Foodbank, Christ Central, Mocha Parade but please call ahead to confirm Tel: 0161 637 4500 FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

Community News

Local Allotment Update! We are having no end of help from the Council down here at the plot.

Blackleach One of our newly elected Councillors has joined the action to help improve the Blackleach allotments and she has volunteered to try to find a venue for a public meeting, so that the site can go ‘self-managed’. The land areas can then be re-arranged to give a better layout and more plots - the waiting list for plots, across the City, is about 600. The Allotment Officer is coming up with new ideas too and he has agreed to talk to the SAF and Community Payback about his plans and to put a programme of improvements in place.

If you didn’t know that Blackleach isn’t just a Country Park and you are interested in an allotment there then please contact the SAF secretary: carolyn.collins@me.com

Peel Green At Newhall Avenue, Peel Green we have found an underused area of land which has the potential for several plots to be established. It’s early days but the Allotment Officer and the Council are backing the plan. So, if you are interested in becoming a ‘Plotter’ and don’t mind the noise of the Salford Reds fans and the aircraft at Barton, get in touch with Carolyn Collins. Don’t forget that the food you grow tastes better than shop-bought. You can grow ‘organic’ and the exercise, even if it’s only your jaw and right elbow as you talk to other plotters, is good for you!
