GEORGIA’S CHILDREN OF THE WORLD
G FESTIVAL: Celebrating a Life to Improve the Life of Others
The G-Festival was something I imagined traveling immediately after the devastating blow of losing my daughter Georgia, only 19 years of age, to complications in her 3rd open heart operation in November 2010. Something that would not only bring her friends together to celebrate her life once a year, but something that could bring our community together to raise money to benefit under privileged children both at home and around the world. Last year’s festival at the Ellesmere Sports Club was attended by 3,000 people, raising over £20,000. Together with the G-Festival at the Waterside in Monton, the Ginger Fringe comedy nights at Albert’s Worsley and various other sponsored events, Georgia's Children of the World raised over £30,000.
Focussing on Water, Healthcare, Education and Nutrition, our projects have included:• Free Range Uniforms - providing sustainable jobs to impoverished village families in Cambodia whilst supplying vital school uniforms to underprivileged children in Salford and Manchester. • Providing critical fresh water ponds and wells. • Funding breakfast clubs in Salford. • Winter food parcels to children in Romania. • Supporting local children who lost a parent in tragic circumstances. This winter we have begun building Georgia's first school for over 100 children with “Build Your Future Today” in a remote village in northern Cambodia. Please come and support G-festival on Sunday 3rd May, for an amazing day out and the knowledge that together we are making a difference. ...Driven by Love, Guided by Angels

Just Sing! Inspired by programmes on TV to have a go at singing in a choir? Did you know that Monton Village has its own choir? Monton Voices Community Choir has been a feature of the local music scene for almost 15 years now. They are a great asset to the village performing regularly at events such as the Christmas Lights Switch On and at local venues such as St Paul’s Church on Egerton Road in Monton.
rehearse from 7pm every Tuesday evening during term time at St Peter & St Paul’s Church on Park Road in Eccles. No audition is required just enthusiasm and commitment to attend the weekly rehearsals.
Choir members come from far and wide (not just from Monton) for the enjoyment that they get from performing a wide variety of pieces from choral pieces to show tunes – and have become great fundraisers for charity in the process.
In the run up to Christmas 2014 the choir performed to great acclaim in Salford Museum & Art Gallery, in Eccles Town Centre, held two highly successful concerts at St Paul’s Church Monton and raised over £1,300 for their chosen charity, The Christie Cancer Trust. Exciting things are already planned for 2015 including the Street Choir Festival in the historic Yorkshire coastal town of Whitby and they will be performing again at St Paul’s Church, Monton.
Under the energetic leadership of their multitalented Musical Director, Judy Kent, Monton Voices

Monton in 2015! Hooray for Monton Monton High Street continues to go from strength to strength. Several new businesses have opened recently - a dress shop, estate agents, barbers and a new bar soon, where the old post office was - all of which compliment the current businesses and give us even more reason, to keep it local!
Scoop The Poop - Part 2! Some people just don’t realise how anti-social it is to leave a dog’s dirty deed for us to inadvertently step in and then walk it into our home, shop or school…! A large % of dog owners in Monton are very responsible and clean up after their pets. A small % DO NOT!
Last year, MVCA worked with William Harris (Dog Warden) at the Council, and the children from Monton Green Primary School to produce posters which were placed in all businesses and also given out to residents for gates and fences in problem areas. Despite an improvement at the time, the dog fouling in and around Monton, and the Dukes Drive Country Park, is now escalating again. SO, MVCA and the Dog Warden, other schools and Monton Green will once more produce posters with the scoop the poop emphasis, trying anew for 2015. Please keep an eye on the MVCA website for details at www.montonvillage.org.uk and PLEASE, PLEASE help keep Monton Green and Clean.

Woods, Wildlife and Wet Earth Did you know Salford boasts five Green Flag Award winning parks and open spaces? Salford Rangers give us an insight into the three main sites, which offer a wide range of activities throughout the year for all age ranges: - Clifton Country Park, Blackleach Country Park and Worsley Woods - all with their own unique characters. CLIFTON COUNTY PARK owes much of its existence to the area’s industrial past. Formerly the Wet Earth Colliery, the park now covers 50 hectares of meadow, woods, ponds and a lake with the River Irwell as its boundary. There’s a network of paths, such as the Wet Earth Trail to explore Clifton’s industrial past and also the Irwell Sculpture Trail. The site also has a concessionary bridleway. Clifton Country Park is popular with by walkers, cyclists, fishermen and horse riders and is a great place to enjoy a picnic, use the adventure play area or climb the rock boulder. The visitors centre is also a great place to find out about the area’s past. BLACKLEACH COUNTRY PARK in Walkden has seen the land change from peat bog to industrial use and is now countryside with a reservoir, meadows and woodlands to explore. The site is managed to provide a variety of habitats by Salford City Council’s Ranger team with the help of Salford Voluntary Rangers and is a great place to come and spot wildlife. Common Tern breed here in summer, along with 18 species of butterfly, Great Crested Newts and 13 species of dragonfly which have benefited from 10 new ponds over the last few years. WORSLEY WOODS covers 30 hectares of woodland, brook and wetland habitats with Old Warke Dam at the southern end of the site (featured in the main photo). The Dam was built originally as a private boating and fishing lake for the first Earl of Ellesmere and much of the woodland was planted to create a game reserve. Now there’s a new jetty for great views over the Dam, new footpaths and seating. There’s an adventure play area off Sefton Drive and a spring Wildflower Trail as well as stunning autumn colours later in the year. Salford City Council’s Ranger team runs everything from den building, wildlife studies and orienteering to guided walks throughout the year, while voluntary rangers help with conservation tasks at the three sites. New volunteers are always welcome. Get in touch by emailing Rangers@salford.gov.uk, or follow us on SalfordRangerTeam or @SalfordWildlife. 14 LIVE IT LOCAL

HOME BOARDING FAMILIES NEEDED
WANTED
Dog Lovers
People say the best thing about being a grandparent is handing the children back at the end of the day. The canine equivalent for dogs is a company called Digs for Dogs. Digs for Dogs offers a professional, caring service where pets are accommodated in a loving home environment with select families whilst their owners are away from home for whatever reason. Pets are suitably matched with a loving home boarding family who continues the owner’s existing routine for exercising and feeding, and whose environment is similar to the pet’s own home. If you love dogs and would enjoy the company of a visiting dog on a flexible basis then this is a great alternative to owning your own dog. Home Boarders can enjoy all the doggy fun without the financial responsibility! All visiting dogs come with food, bedding etc. so there is no cost implication for the Home Boarder. Every bride, and every guest, wants to look their best on the big day. At Slimming World you can, without having to weigh, measure, count or buy special foods or follow a plan that leaves you hungry. Follow our five top tips for wedding weight loss success that have helped other members slim into the wedding dress of their dreams, or their slim-fit Tux, and enjoy their special day slimmer, healthier and happier.
1) Slim Down Without Hunger Slimming World’s Food Optimising eating plan encourages you to eat unlimited amounts of ‘Free Foods’ – like fresh meat and poultry, pasta, potatoes, rice, fruit and veg – so you’re never hungry. Plus, because the focus is on healthy everyday foods, the whole family (even your in-laws) will love your new style of cooking and eating!
2) Get Support Having someone to chat to, share ideas with and by adding an element of friendly competition, it can really boost your commitment and motivation. So, if a friend or relative wants to lose weight too, buddy up and do it together!
3) Get Active & Boost Your Losses If you’re saving every penny and can’t afford to join a gym, don’t worry. Walking, swimming and cycling are all great ways to boost your metabolism and get fit & toned as you lose weight – we call it Body Magic, and it really is magic for your weight loss success!
4) Say Goodbye to Willpower... Say Hello to Choice and Power! At Slimming World we know how damaging denial is to our weight loss campaign – it’s when we’re told we CAN’T have something, that we only want it more! So with Food Optimising we encourage you to enjoy your favourites every day, whether that’s a glass of wine, a bar of chocolate, a bowl of ice cream... and especially a sample or two of wedding cake!
5) Be Your Own Weight Loss Wedding Planner! Plan, plan, plan! It’s tempting to ring for a takeaway or stop at the drive-through when your fridge is empty. So make sure your cupboards and fridge are always stocked with plenty of healthy Free Foods that you can enjoy for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And, if there’s a particular time when you crave chocolate or chips plan for it, i.e. if you’re a TV snacker be ready with a bowl of strawberries, grapes or a sugar-free jelly topped with a huge fruit salad.
You’ll discover loads of support, shared ideas and helpful tips at your warm, local friendly Slimming World group, where we will be waiting to welcome you with open arms!

LIFE AND DEATH IN THE MINES Local Coal Mining Illustration of the Astley deep pit used in the Illustrated London News 1874
The local coal mining industry, apart from cotton spinning and weaving, was once the economic lifeblood of Lancashire. But it was an appalling way to make a living. Over the course of 300 years hundreds of thousands of men, women and children toiled deep beneath the earth, in the dimmest of light, in toxic air; with the possibility of a violent death, by explosion, tunnel collapse, or drowning.
siblings worked with their mothers, hauling tubs of coal from the working coalface to the bottom of the shaft where it was lifted to the surface. They were known as “Hurriers”, which gives some idea of the speed at which they were expected to work… Fathers and elder brothers laboured at the coalface, in cramped and crumbling space, hacking the coal loose with picks, shovels and bare hands.
The Hazards The Mines The mines were owned by local gentry and aristocracy, all motivated by profit and largely indifferent to the plight of their workers. The Coalfield was plagued by the facts that the mineral itself - being high quality bituminous - was highly volatile, the geology of the area is badly fractured by faults (some still active) and water intrusion ever-present. Ventilation of the mines, in the early days and even later, was a particular problem. Single shaft mines tended to accumulate “fire damp” gas, heavier than air, which could explode at any time and there was no means of introducing fresh air. The only early solution was to burn a brazier at the base of the shaft to vent the gases, but at the dawn of each working day a worker swathed in wet rags and carrying a long pole with a burning candle at the end, would be sent into the mine. It was his unfortunate job to explode any gas – and hopefully survive the experience! In later years a system of doors was introduced in the tunnels to contain the gas. Such doors would be operated by children, known as “Trappers” who would generally be a mere 6 years old! Such infants were put to work by their parents out of economic necessity, in almost total darkness, for pennies. Their elder 28 LIVE IT LOCAL
Before 1850 few records were kept of “accidents” in the mines, since owners either did not care or, worse, suppressed bad news. It is, however, almost certain that thousands died in earlier centuries. When records began to be kept they revealed that the Lancashire Coalfield, between 1850-4, had the worst safety record in the entire Country. In those years 299 mineworkers were killed by explosions or tunnel collapse. In 1859, a further 125 died. The greatest tragedy occurred in 1910 when the total workforce in the Coalfield exceeded 100,000. The Pretoria Pit, operated by the Hulton Company, exploded and 344 miners died due to the use of a faulty lamp igniting a concentration of gas. Plainly, in those days, there was no “Health and Safety Act” to protect them. The Pretoria disaster was the third greatest single mining calamity ever recorded in this country. Pretoria, Little Hulton Crowds at the pit head on the day of the explosion.

Local History
Despite improvements in much later years the carnage continued – as late as 1979 ten miners died in a Golborne pit in an explosion caused by an electrical spark igniting a pocket of gas.
The “Rewards” In the early 19th century mine owners employed workers on a “Bond” system by which they paid the worker a small advance. This immediately placed the worker, and any other employed members of his family, in immediate debt. The Bond bound them to a year’s work . If any member, for whatever reason, failed to work the entire period, then a large financial forfeit had to be paid to the employer. The Bond system was also useful to the employer in enforcing discipline and frustrating any move for unionisation. In 1799 the Government supported the mine owners by passing the “Combination Act” which made unions illegal. Some owners paid their workers not in money, but in ”tokens” or vouchers. These only had value in the Company shops where, of course, prices were also fixed by the mine owner. Such practices were only outlawed in 1831 by the reforming “Truck Act”. The Duke of Bridgewater was comparatively generous. He paid in real money, a princely 40p a day (equivalent) for a 15 hour shift, six days a week. Children earned just 5p per day. However, should any worker be late, then the good Duke fined them 12p… His workers saw the light of day, in winter, only on Sunday. Such were the prevailing wages that they were only slightly better than the meagre support of Poor Law Relief, which involved the shame of destitution and residing in the “Workhouse”.
Progress The Act of 1831 was followed, in 1842, by the Mines Act. This latter prohibited the use of women, girls and boys under ten years of age from working underground. But, out of necessity many women continued and Inspectors turned a “blind eye” to the practice. Women became, for the most part, “Pit Brow Lassies”, who sorted coal from slag at the surface. Unions formed under the guise of “Friendly Societies” until they became legitimate in 1881. But radical change did not come until 1945. Women pit brow workers of the Wigan Coal & Iron Company, 1918.
Nationalisation Following WW2, the coal industry was Nationalised and the National Union of Mineworkers became a force to be reckoned with. Mines were modernised, many were closed as being uneconomic. Working conditions had started to improve after the General Strike of 1926 and now gathered pace. Pithead baths, canteens, better safety measures and training were instituted. Locally, the National Coal Board had offices at Worsley Old Hall and administered all the mines on the Coalfield. Mine Rescue Services were centred on the facility on Ellenbrook Road in Boothstown which had been commissioned in 1933. This Grade II listed building exists to the present day and was responsible for all rescue in the event of a disaster on the Coalfield. It housed a permanent team and all the equipment necessary for rescue plus a laboratory and training facilities to simulate explosion, gas, tunnel collapse and flooding. Quaintly, it also possessed an Aviary to house canaries, those little birds that were used to test for the presence of gas – if they breathed and survived then it was safe ! Such was a now vanished industry, one that tested human courage and endurance to the ultimate. Written by: John Kirwin
