HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY GEORGE'S! Owner, Ryan, Kelvin and Bernie reflect on George’s first anniversary back in December 2014 and tells Live it Local about the Restaurant one year on. “It has been good first year,” Giggs explains as he sips a morning coffee. “Kelvin has always taken an interest in food and restaurants and Bernie really has the experience. He had the restaurant before when it was an Italian, so he has the know-how from being in the restaurant business for the last 15 years and has guided us with a lot of things that perhaps we didn’t know.” “Me and my friends felt that Worsley was just missing somewhere like this where you could go, no matter what time of day,” continues United’s Assistant Manager, who grew up in the area. “We are pleased with how it has gone and now there are people like us who can do what we wanted to do 10 years ago when we were growing up.” Gregory, co-owner and a former solicitor, adds, “We had always talked about doing it together and when the opportunity arose to do it here in the village at Bernie’s location, it seemed the obvious thing to do.” A main highlight really stands out; “When we opened, we wanted some outside space which the original restaurant didn’t have,” explains Giggs. “We wanted to open out the back as 4 LIVE IT LOCAL

that’s where you get the most sunlight and we have heaters at the front and a great view of the canal.” After seeking council planning permission, the additional areas at the Barton Road venue, which seats 32 at the front and 40 at the back, opened in summer. “I think it surprised everybody, the amount of business we did,” says Taylor. “Just the fact you can open the doors and it creates a totally different space.” “That’s Manchester now,” chips in Giggs, “creating that café culture where you sit outside and have a coffee. We have never had that in the village and that’s why we were so keen and fought so hard to have it.” Making the most of all its facilities, George’s caters for business lunches, conferences and even afternoon teas. “All our food is cooked from fresh and that’s what really makes us stand out from our competitors; we are an independent, we aren’t a chain,” explains Taylor with pride. “Everything is absolutely locally sourced and our head chef, Andrew Parker, makes a point of doing that.”

Join our

Short Term Cat Fostering Scheme We are currently seeking people to take part in our Short Term Cat Foster Scheme. The scheme will involve volunteers providing temporary refuge for a single, adult cat for a 2-4 week period before the animal goes into our cattery for rehoming. Why? We are hoping to keep newly admitted animals isolated from other felines for a short period to minimise the risk of minor infections between cats which are so common and easily spread in catteries.

We will provide full support including all the food, equipment, transport and treatment that the cat requires. We just need your home and your kindness!

We are looking for foster carers who:n Have no other cats in the home. n Live in South Manchester or Salford. n Have some experience of caring for cats, whether they be owned or fostered. n Be available on at least one weekday between 9.30am and 5.30pm. n Can offer care to a cat for 2-4 week period and provide an ongoing commitment to this scheme. n Flexible so we can organise a meeting to discuss details in person at your home ASAP. BRIDGEWATER SCHOOL

MAKING THE RIGHT CHOICE As your child draws to the end of their primary school education you are faced with a range of choices. You’ll no doubt want your child educating across a broad number of subjects to achieve the best results that they are capable of, whilst enjoying themselves as they grow up and develop their own sense of self to go out into this world as an individual. Please take your time to think about the time your child will spend in school and how you would like them to turn out at the end of their schooling. Ideally you’ll want your child brought up in a safe, family environment that matches your values, where they are known personally throughout their schooling from their early years to adulthood, and to entering their chosen profession or University.

We could say that we would provide that and more for you and your child. It would be better still to let you hear what the last ISA school inspection report said of Bridgewater School. They said that pupils’ personal development is outstanding, and that the school is highly successful in its aim to develop pupils’ spiritual, moral and cultural understanding. Pupils are confident, articulate and sensitive to each other’s needs. The Chief Executive Officer of the Independent Schools Association went on to say “I think that what Bridgewater does so wonderfully is sow a seed inside each and every pupil that will grow into something very special.” Please feel free to contact the school to arrange an appointment with the Head and a tour of the school. Our Senior School Entrance Examination is Friday, 30th January 2015.

Salford Learners Head to Parliament Nine learners from Salford City College’s Pendleton and Eccles Sixth Form Centres joined over 100 other young people on a trip to London, to visit the Houses of Parliament for the ‘My Voice, My Vote Democracy Café’. The event was organised by UpRising, a UK-wide youth leadership development organisation, which aims to open pathways to power for talented young people from diverse and under-represented backgrounds. After arriving at the Speaker’s House, the learners were welcomed by Labour MP Rushanara Ali, before being asked to split into groups to discuss a number of key political topics. Supervised by professionals from the political sector, the groups had two hours to discuss their opinions on immigration, crime, the health service, the economy and unemployment.

“Young people are rarely given an opportunity to learn about politics, and UpRising events like this are a great way to break down the barriers between MPs and young people,” commented Lydia Wright, who is the My Voice My Vote Programme Co-ordinator for Manchester. “I think that arriving at the Houses of Parliament and being introduced to the MPs was very intimidating for the young people at first, but very soon they all came out of their shells and gladly contributed their ideas.” “I liked sharing my opinions on topics I am passionate about, and I enjoyed hearing other people’s views too,” added 18-year-old Rebecca Bate, who is studying Performing Arts at Pendleton Sixth Form Centre. “I was also really thrilled to meet Rushanara Ali.” www.salfordcc.ac.uk | 0161 631 5000

salfordautism Led and run by Autistic People for Autistic people salfordautism, the new group working with Salford City Council to support anyone in Salford affected by autism and those around them, has been very busy over the Christmas period. As well as working with national and local bodies to inform and develop local services for autistic people, we have been getting to know local groups and helping a range of individuals with everyday problems that make living with autism that much worse. The 24/7 0845 emergency contact line has been a lifeline to adults in crisis and worried parents of autistic children alike, offering information and guidance, someone to listen and understand (we understand 'cos we live it!) and, where necessary, get involved and 'do something'. Networking with other individuals and groups nationwide through Facebook, Twitter and email has helped to spread news and information from the world of autism, linking people together to

challenge inappropriate perceptions and poor service, and is getting results. The twice-monthly open day/drop in at Eccles Town Hall provides a chance to socialise and compare notes with others in similar situations, get advice and information, or just talk to someone face to face. We have helped individuals with problems getting and keeping jobs, housing issues, benefits and generally making sense of the confusing world that can overawe individuals and parents around and after a diagnosis. Whether there is a formal diagnosis or not, if you are someone affected by autism, or know someone who is, call us. We are here to help.

10 Tips for a Great New You! “New Year New Start” by Juliesweigh2fitness (formally Rosemary Conley classes) 1. Give away any chocs, biscuits, sweets and unhealthy nibbles you still may have around, to avoid any temptation. 2. Take up exercise anything from walking, exercise DVDs or joining one of our local classes. 3. Write down everything you eat or drink this really can help, if you are over eating you can be so unaware of those little nibbles we have daily. 4. Get an exercise buddy - you’ll keep each other going, or come to class and make new friends with people who want to achieve the same goals as you. 5. Be aware of your meal when you eat. No multi-tasking; sit down to eat. Make your meals a time when you can share it as a family and enjoy your food. 16 LIVE IT LOCAL

6. Breathe and relax - take 5/10 deep breaths before your meal, relax after to allow the meal to digest. 7. Nourish your body - eat your 5 or more portions of fruit or vegetables. 8. Cook fresh, so you know exactly what is in it. Sugar, fat, salt... remember pre-packed meals can be loaded with these. 9. Treat yourself! Allow yourself a daily 100 calorie treat. 10. Rest - have a rest day from exercise and allow your body to recover. Let this be your “New You” Year, whether it be weight loss, increasing your fitness, or both! Julie x For more advice:-

Esperar Boutique has just opened its doors to the fashionable and style conscious women of Monton! We invited them to share their top tips for LOOKING GOOD, and the TRENDS they predict will be big for Spring-Summer 2015.

Confidence Learn to love yourself and your body! Every single woman I’ve ever dressed has turned around to me and said, “I hate my shoulders or I hate my feet or my waist”. Every single person feels the same way - male or female, celeb or non-celeb. We strongly believe that a woman feeling confident instantly makes her outfit! Celebrate who you are and enhance your assests! If you are a classic pear shape for example, wearing an oversized shirt will do nothing for you! Accentuate your waist with a long sleeve, fitted cropped jumper and a high waisted pencil skirt. This will give the illusion of curves in all the right places, whilst showing off your waist!

With age comes Class Just because you’re no longer in your twenties doesn’t mean you need to change your style, you still feel the same, but perhaps your figure has changed? So just think more classic! Every woman, whatever her age should have a LBD in their wardrobe. Shop clever, and choose timeless pieces that will easily mix and match with existing items you have to freshen up your look, such as a tailored jacket, and skinny trousers.

Seek style advice Even the most fashion forward girl could always do with a bit of style advice! Why do you think celebrities have stylists!! Boutique shopping is always the best place for this! If you’re looking 18 LIVE IT LOCAL

for an outfit for a certain event, then sit back, relax and let your sales assistant do the leg work! She should be able to pick out what you need and style the outfit for you. Maybe it needs a statement necklace, and maybe it needs shoe boots rather than strappy heels! You don’t need to be a celeb to be treated like a VIP!

SS15 Trends It’s all about smart tailoring, with contrasting soft colours such as navy, peach and pink. Channel your inner boss and work pink skinny peg trousers with an oversized navy cape and keep accessories chunky, keeping it feminine with loose cuts and pretty colours will nail the look! Prints are around to stay especially with the 70’s trends making an appearance! Think festival, fringing and floral! Layer the look up with next season’s favourite fabric: suede, to take you from the cold winter months into fresh spring days. Shoulder bearing in ‘IN’! Shoulders are sexy and were HUGE on the catwalks. Next seasons dress has to be off the shoulder, no accessories required - just keep it simple. Enjoy a VIP experience without the hefty price tag! THE POWER OF COMMUNITY As one year approaches it's conclusion, another year of possibility beckons. This can be a great opportunity to take stock of our lives and re-evaluate our dreams and aspirations. Although as individuals, we are wholely unique, the topic of fitness or losing weight is one that makes its way on to many of our New Year ’s resolutions lists. As many a successful coach will tell you, consistency of training is half the battle. We have all started a new fitness programme to find that weeks or months later we have lost motivation, got bored or lost focus of why we where doing it in the first place. Sometimes that may be because that type of exercise was a bad fit for us, other times it may have been that we just lacked that little bit of support to keep us on track. There are many things we can do to increase our chances of success, however sooner or later, life is going to get in the way and your ability to remain focused and committed is going to be fully tested.

SHARE THE EXPERIENCE We believe the power of community is a wholely underestimated tool that can make a real difference to your long- term relationship with fitness. Ultimately, no hobby - fitness or otherwise is likely to succeed if you don't enjoy doing it, and for that matter why should you!?? That's why sharing in the experience with somebody else can make your experience more fun, and more likely to last. That's not to say a Bootcamp like ours isn't going to be tough at times, but if you can share in the experience, sweat together, ache together and 20 LIVE IT LOCAL

have a laugh whilst doing it, then you're half way there. There's something inherently satisfying w h e n s h a r i n g t h e e x p e r i e n c e of hardship and getting through to the other side. Group exercise is no different - battling through a tough session and comparing notes at the end is as equally important as that last push up. It's all part of the experience. Being asked by a fellow bootcamper why you weren’t able to attend last week's session might seem like a small matter, but ultimately it’s these small things that re-enforce that sense of camaraderie and feeling of belonging. We believe wholeheartedly in the power of community; not only for practical reasons but we believe that all of life’s experiences are that much richer when shared. We love our community and if any of this resonates with you, the chances are, you will too! Please message us if you would like to try one of our sessions, we would love to hear from you.

THE ENIGMA OF

MONTON VETERANS’ SHELTER designed by the Borough Surveyor, commenting that it was not what they had expected but what the ‘City Fathers’ felt Monton should have, and ‘it could have had more comfortable seats’! Monton was disappointed. No joyful opening ceremony took place, ruling out the ‘opening ceremony’ theory for the photograph. The ‘military presence’, suggested as evidence that the Shelter was dedicated as a War Memorial, is actually a lone Bugler.

The Event The Photograph This unpublished photograph, belonging to the owners of the former Eccles Journal, can be found in Salford History Library. It has been the subject of speculation and mystery and has been attributed to having been taken at the opening ceremony of Monton Veterans’ Shelter or the Shelter’s dedication as a War Memorial. Neither is true. It was taken when the Monton Shelter played a small part in national history in the 1930s. In 1928, the Revd A G Fox, Vicar, St Paul’s Church, campaigned for the building of a shelter on Monton Green for the use of ‘Veterans of Industry’ (pensioners) during inclement weather. The Council’s rejection of the application provoked strong feeling amongst the old men of Monton. The Vicar, along with Councillor James Staton Speakman, responded and called a public meeting. Over 200 people crammed into the Francis Street School. The ‘elite’ of Monton gave their support for a shelter for old men. Local councillors, aware of public opinion, supported the application to the Council for a modest shelter, costing about £25, to accommodate 25 to 30 people. The Council agreed. In 1930 the Church Magazine reported the completion of the Victorian Promenade Shelter, 24 LIVE IT LOCAL

From archive photographs of Mayors in the 1930s, Councillor J S Speakman, who campaigned for the shelter, is identified as the Mayor in the photograph. His term, and therefore the event, occurred during 1935/6. The unusually large document is the pivotal factor in determining the reason for the event. On 24 January 1936, the Eccles Journal carried a photograph showing Mayor Speakman, accompanied by the same Bugler, on Eccles Town Hall steps. Crucially, the Mayor is reading from the large document. It was reported that, following the death of King George V on 20th January, Edward VIII, who later abdicated, was proclaimed King throughout the land. This Proclamation was read throughout the Borough by the Mayor, first at Eccles Town Hall, then at the Peel Green Tram Terminus and lastly at Monton, where local people assembled as Bugler James Powell, Lancashire Fusiliers (Territorials), sounded the alarm. Accompanied by Civic Dignitaries, the Mayor, Councillor J S Speakman, read the Proclamation. Monton Veterans’ Shelter welcomed the ‘City Fathers’ and made a fitting backdrop for this historical announcement.

HOME BOARDING FAMILIES NEEDED People say the best thing about being a grandparent is handing the children back at the end of the day. The canine equivalent for dogs is a company called Digs for Dogs. Digs for Dogs offers a professional, caring service where pets are accommodated in a loving home environment with select families whilst their owners are away from home for whatever reason. Pets are suitably matched with a loving home boarding family who continues the owner’s existing routine for exercising and feeding, and whose environment is similar to the pet’s own home. If you love dogs and would enjoy the company of a visiting dog on a flexible basis then this is a great alternative to owning your own dog. Home Boarders can enjoy all the doggy fun without the financial responsibility! All visiting dogs come with food, bedding etc. so there is no cost implication for the Home Boarder. Local History

BLACK DIAMONDS

Local Coal Mining Astley Green Colliery, Pit Yard Image courtesy of Astley Green Colliery Museum (AGCM)

That’s what my Granny used to call coal and she knew what she was talking about, both are carbon after all… Back in 1950, as far as we were concerned, coal was far more valuable, it was the difference between being warm - or cold. Times were hard and in the face of bitter winters, she probably used the enticing description to motivate me into joining her on the banks of the Bridgewater Canal, to pick the precious black and shiny stuff that warmed our house. With a battered old pram and a hessian sack, we would wrap up well and walk the stretch between Worsley and Boothstown, where the banks are raised above the surrounding fields. This was the best place, because those raised banks are composed largely of tipped slag and coal fragments - waste from the local mines (“pits”), that dotted the landscape to the immediate north. It was also a stretch where kindly “bargees” enroute to Barton Power Station with coal cargoes, might shovel some onto the towpath for our benefit ! It may be astonishing to most of our present population, who see no evidence of mining today, to learn that we stand on what was once one of the largest and most productive coalfields in Britain. About 300 million years ago this area was a vast tropical swamp, similar to the Amazon rainforest where, over millennia, vegetation died, was covered and compressed, into what we now call coal. And there it stayed, immense stored energy deep in the earth, almost ignored until about 300 years ago. 30 LIVE IT LOCAL

Here and there it occurred on the surface, laid bare by erosion and was called “seacole” then it might be used to warm a home or by a blacksmith to work iron.

The Coal Boom All that changed with the arrival of the Industrial Revolution, when the demand for energy soared and wood was scarce and inefficient. Mines were sunk everywhere and at Worsley underground canals, 52 miles of them, were hand hewn from the rock to connect all the Duke of Bridgewater’s mines to his new Canal, to convey coal to Manchester. So abundant were the coal seams and so thick (at Worsley 4 feet thick, elsewhere up to 7 feet) that a shaft sunk almost anywhere found coal at different levels. Soon the landscape became studded with lattice towers of iron, surmounted by winding wheel headgear which lowered “cage” lifts full of men, women and children (as young as 6 years of age), deep into the earth to the coalfaces, to work in darkness and dust to harvest the valuable mineral. Such workforces numbered in the thousands and, what had been small agricultural villages, grew into squalid mining towns to house them. With black faces permanently seamed with coaldust and their lungs choked by pulmonary diseases, they sur vived... but not for long. Death was a frequent visitor, if not from disease, then from tunnel collapse or explosion of “fire damp” gas. Black hills of slag waste from the mines surrounded their towns, many of which still exist, hidden by scrubland. FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504

Local History

Gin Pit Colliery, Astley, 1935 (Image: Manchester Library)

Cable railway, Mosley Common Colliery, 1948 (Image: Manchester Library)

The Lancashire Coalfield stretches from the foothills of the Pennines to well beyond Wigan in the west, from the Ribble Valley in the north to mid-Cheshire in the south. Beneath much of that present landscape the geology must resemble a gigantic termites nest of shafts, tunnels and galleries, slowly subsiding into the voids left by the extracted coal. The lakes that we locally call “flashes” are testimony to such collapse. Some are very large indeed, such as Pennington Flash near Leigh, now a nature reserve and a haven for waterfowl. The scale of all this mining can scarcely be comprehended today, but at its height in 1907, there were 358 collieries (“pits” in our local parlance) in production, with a total workforce of 100,000 men! They extracted more than 20 million tons of coal annually in the first quarter of the 20th century until demand slackened and eventually all mining ceased locally in 1993. Coal and its pollution, its “carbon release”, is now regarded as an undesirable fuel in this country. Among the last mines to close, in 1968, was Mosley Common near Ellenbrook. Mosley Common was a “Superpit”, with many shafts and huge coal reserves (which still remain unexploited to the full). At its peak it employed 2,400 workers above and below the surface.

Underground Canals at Worsley during the 1960s

Not far from where the executive homes of Ellenbrook now stand was the fringe of the pits slagheap, now covered by a dense stand of birch trees. Its near neighbour, Astley Green Pit, is the sole remaining visible relic of what was once a mighty industry. Sunk to exploit the deep coal seams beneath Chat Moss and employing 2,000 miners, Astley closed in 1970. Now preserved as a Mining Museum, Astley retains its pithead tower, winding gear and Engine House - the latter containing a 3,300 hp steam engine that powered the cage lifts. It also possesses a fleet of locomotives used to convey the coal over colliery lines to “Chutes” at Boothstown and Worsley that decanted their cargoes into barges. Rising almost 30 metres above the trees of today, the tower is easily seen from the village and nearby Bridgewater Canal. The Museum is well worth a visit and forms a fitting memorial to those who worked in this famous, and infamous, industry. Beneath it, under Chat Moss, still remains much coal, perhaps awaiting the day when processes can be found to make coal a clean and acceptable fuel. Written by: John Kirwin
