Salford Central
Foodbank Salford Central foodbank is a life changing community based project operating in Salford. As a Christian charity we love to involve local organisations in our work, including schools, businesses and statutory agencies. The foodbank helps individuals and families in crisis, through the provision of emergency food supplies. A network of distributors consisting of health visitors, social workers and other community based support workers, refer people using a food voucher to the foodbank centre where people receive food. Other services are available to help them out of their crisis. Each person receives enough nutritionally balanced food for three days.
Contemporary Traditional Designs Full range of fresh flowers & a wide range of tropical flowers Bouquets * Balloons * Teddies * Chocolates
Weddings & Christenings
We collect food from customers at supermarkets, churches and other local groups. We see food as a catalyst for change by providing emergency food immediately to meet a crisis situation with some practical help while Care Professionals look at longer-term strategies. In the last year our foodbank has provided emergency food parcels to over 2,200 people in the Salford area, of which nearly 1,000 were children, which equates to over 24,000 meals. We have already fed nearly 1,200 Salford residents in 2014 and are forecasting distributing in excess of 18 tonnes of food this year. As well as food we are here to welcome and listen to clients, with a friendly chat over a hot drink and piece of cake. It helps to share a problem and our volunteers can then signpost to external agencies for further support. Donations can be made at:• Mocha Parade, Lower Broughton: Tues 2-4pm • The Sanctuary, Dallas Court, Salford Quays: Mon 1-3pm • Tescos Salford Precinct: during store hours For further information on Salford Central Foodbank, please contact:Foodbank Manager Scott Tulloch Tel: 07583 256787 Email: scott@salfordcentral.foodbank.org.uk Visit: www.salfordcentral.foodbank.org.uk Salford Central foodbank is one of 400 foodbanks set up by the Trussell Trust in the UK.

Tel: 0161 258 0507 bubbaloophotography.com 131a Greenleach Lane, Roe Green, Worsley, M28 2RS At Bubbaloo, we’re newborn specialists – having photographed over 250 tiny babies to date. With so many proud new parents singing our praises we’re confident that our experience and passion will shine through in your pictures. We prefer to photograph newborns when they are about a week old while they are still bendy and super sleepy. We recommend booking as soon as possible after your 20 week scan to avoid disappointment, as our sessions do tend to fill up quite far in advance. If you are due soon or have already had baby, do get in touch though as we occasionally have last minute availability.

We provide an attractive and stimulating environment for children, making them feel happy and valued. We work closely with parents to create a professional working relationship and rely on continued communication to form ongoing

Summer Beauty We invited Peace & Pout, Swinton-based Hair & Beauty salon, to share their tips on the key-trends for this summer!
Hair Trends that we have been seeing for the start of the summer include some of the classics: big curly blow-dries, long hair and Balayage colour. Balayage is a key 'on trend' look; a fantastic colouring technique blending sun kissed blondes and warm rich browns softly through the mid length and ends of the hair, leaving you looking sunshine ready. Perfect for those long summer nights. Keep your hair big and bouncy with an amazing curly blow dry and pin curls with Charlotte at Peace & Pout.
Make Up Summer is here and that means one thing... Festival season is here also and we are always being asked for bright colours on eyes and lips, cheeks, and of course, lots of glitter!! Embrace the carefree style of the celebrity festival goer and let yourself go wild!! Mac pigments are a fantastic product to glam up any make-up look and come in a range of bold colours to experiment with. A great tip is to be adventurous: try something you wouldn't usually, steer away from the standard smokey eye and go for something bright!! VISIT OUR WEBSITE WWW.ONOUR-
Mix and match, try a lipstick that doesn't match your nail colour, wear a blusher that isn't the same colour as your top, in the sunshine it'll all come together. Above all have fun with your look, come and see us at Peace & Pout and try something new.
Nails This summer it's all about neon, pastels and floral patterns when it comes to nails. Even though Classic French is making a come back, a pop of colour is perfect for any festival or summer night out and nails are the must have accessory at the moment. With holiday season here, matching gel and acrylic toes are in high demand! And with them lasting chip free for up to 2 months you can't go wrong. At Peace & Pout we can even guarantee there is no nail too short or badly bitten that a set of strong skillfully built acrylics cannot transform. Plus we recommend everyone to take advantage of the latest nail art and unique after care with free unlimited repairs. This season’s choice for us is a set of bright white, tapered square or almond shaped acrylic nails, to finish off any look for this summer! For more great tips head down to Peace & Pout. Services include: Hair, Make-up, Nails, Brows, Lashes and Tanning.

Summer Beauty
PROTECT YOUR SKIN With over 14 years experience in the industry, Worsley Laser Clinic shares some advice on skin protection this summer, and all year round.
Use sun protection of SPF15 to SPF30
Wear a sunscreen all year round UVA rays cause ageing to the skin. They attack our skin all year round (even in winter!). UVA rays penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, generating dangerous free radicals that cause wrinkles! UVB are the burning rays of the sun that we feel on a hot sunny day. These damage the DNA structure of the skin cell. So, use a broad spectrum sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection all year round. Both UVA and UVB contribute to the risk of skin cancer.
24 LIVE IT LOCAL
Dermatologists recommend using at least SPF15, or if you have fair skin, SPF30. There’s little extra benefit of going higher - SPF 15 blocks about 94% and SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB rays. Whichever you choose, apply it on all exposed skin 15 to 30 mins before going outside. Then reapply at least every two hours. If you sweat or swim, apply again.
Keep sun cream cool and out of sunlight Sunscreen is required to maintain its strength for 3 years but will only do so if not stored at high temperatures or in direct sunlight. Never use it past the expiry date. However, you should be using sunscreen all year round, so a bottle shouldn’t last more than a year!

TRAINS, BOATS AND PLANES The Making of Manchester PART III: BOATS An early Manchester Liner:- Manchester City Launched in 1898
The Opening of the Manchester Ship Canal, in 1894, made it possible for ocean-going ships to sail directly into the heart of Manchester, over 30 miles from the sea. Initially, traffic was sparse due to continuing negative influence from the Port of Liverpool, where shipowner cartels (making good money from Manchester cargoes), were reluctant to sail into a ‘dead end’, a cul-de-sac canal. To counter this, Sir Christopher Furness, Chairman of Furness Withy & Co. shipbuilders and a major shareholder in the Canal, proposed Manchester should have its own shipping Line. In 1898, Manchester Liners Ltd was founded with a capital of £1 million. Two secondhand ships bought for £60,000 launched the Company to sea. These first two, renamed ‘Manchester Enterprise’ and ‘Manchester Trader’, were 3,000 tons each and were joined, in 1899, by a new ship of 7,700 tons, the ‘Manchester City’ - a refrigerated ship built to carry live cattle, sheep and frozen meat. The routes chosen for Manchester Liners (ML) were the North American ports - principally Canada and the southern ports of the USA. On her maiden voyage the ‘Manchester City” brought 450 cattle and 150 sheep from Canada - a feat which was greeted with amazement. Those who opposed the Canal claimed that this ship, which measured 467 feet in length, could never pass the locks and navigate the Canal, despite the locks being 530 feet long. The ‘City’ made the trip and received a welcome to Manchester from the Lord Mayor, a brass band and a huge crowd. Her success was the key to more shipowners using the Canal.
Manchester Liners at War The Company’s fleet grew in numbers and The Boer War in South Africa saw four ships drafted by Government to carry troops, horses and war 26 LIVE IT LOCAL
supplies from the USA, Argentina and Australia. By 1904, the Company operated fourteen ships between 4,000 to 7,000 tons, all with ‘Manchester’ prefixing their names. By 1914 (outbreak of WWI), there were fifteen and two of these sailed for the Falkland Islands to refuel the Royal Navy ships on that Station with Lancashire coal. As they were doing so a German Battle Group approached and the Royal Navy sailed to meet them. In the ensuing battle the German battleships ‘Scharnhorst’ and ‘Gneisenau’, and their cruiser escorts, were sunk. Guns were fitted fore and aft to all ML vessels, which proved useful when some were later attacked by U-Boats! In 1917, the ‘Manchester Trader’ fought a long-running battle in the Mediterranean with U-65 before finally being captured and sunk. Captain Struss, the ‘Trader’s’ commander, won a Distinguished Service Cross for his bravery. He went on to survive a second sinking in WWII, gain an OBE and complete 40 years service with ML before retiring in 1954! Eleven ML ships were sunk up to 1917, by U-Boats or mines, but more were added to the fleet. Revenge in some measure for those lost was soon coming however… In October 1918, ‘Manchester Division’, enroute from Hartlepool to join an Atlantic convoy to Canada, encountered a U-Boat off Flamborough Head in the North Sea and promptly rammed and sank it! A remarkable ‘consolation goal’ scored by a merchant ship.
The Inter-War Years After WWI, ML had twelve surviving ships and resumed normal services. Several however remained close to the action and participated in humanitarian activities, from carrying relief supplies to Japan after a devastating earthquake, to rescuing the crew of the sinking Glasgow steamer ‘Volumnia’ in the teeth of an Atlantic gale, for which King George V awarded the rescuers the Silver Medal for Gallantry.

Manchester Spinner: Gross Tonnage 7814 Deliberately sunk after D-Day to form a Mulberry Harbour
Manchester Faith: Gross Tonnage 4459 First commercial ship to sail the St Lawrence Seaway, USA
An annual problem on the Canadian routes was the freezing of the St. Lawrence River, the access to Quebec and Montreal. The ML ships, with specially strengthened hulls, were often the first to “Break the Ice” and reach Montreal. The prize for this feat was a gold-topped cane, frequently won by ML skippers. ML vessels led many ships stranded by ice, to open water.
vessel to sail the Seaway.
To War Again At the start of WW2 the LINE had ten ships and, as well as shipping cargoes they had combatant roles as minelayers, auxiliary ships for the Royal Navy and, in the case of the Manchester Trader, as a Commodore ship in command of all the merchant ships in a convoy. Three of the fleet were lost to U-Boats but the redoubtable ‘Manchester Division’ (victor of the WWI U-Boat sinking) distinguished herself again by rescuing forty passengers and crew of the liner ‘Dunedin Star’ off the coast of Namibia. Finally, on 7th June 1944 - one day after D-Day, the ‘Manchester Spinner’ was deliberately sunk to help form the basis for a Mulberry Harbour where the bulk of the invasion troops later landed. She was equipped with anti aircraft guns to discourage the Luftwaffe from interfering with the Landings.
Post War – The Great Lakes Prior to the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, a great canal which today allows large vessel access to The Great Lakes of the mid-West, the only way to get cargoes to the American heartland was trans shipment by rail. However, ML pioneered the use of small canals and, using smaller ships, opened up routes as far as Toronto and Detroit. When the Seaway was completed, in 1954, Chicago was added to the schedule with the larger ships. The ML ship, ‘Manchester Faith’ had the honour of being the first commercial
In these years the heroics of ML ships continued with ‘Manchester’ ships often being in the right place at the right time, saving the crews of an American bomber, ditched in the Atlantic 560 miles from land, and all from a Super Constellation airliner with 76 passengers and crew.
Containerisation 1968-1978 Though ML pioneered container shipping in Britain with four vessels, each of 12,000 tons, they were swiftly overtaken by an international trend toward much larger ships and their ever lowering of shipping costs. Gradual decline set in, particularly for traffic on the Ship Canal, since such ships were too large to use it. By the early 1980s ML had only 5 ships remaining, all were sold by 1985 and commercial traffic was hugely diminished on the upper reaches of the Canal.
New “Lives” for the Canal The Ship Canal did not decay in the subsequent years. On the contrary its systems, such as locks, are in excellent condition and the waterway has acquired a number of new activities. Its formerly murky waters now support abundant waterfowl - swans, Canada Geese and a wide variety of ducks and, in ‘The Quays’ (formerly Salford Docks), hosts Cormorants. The Quays area, formerly the derelict Docks, is now home to The Lowry Theatre and Art Gallery, The Imperial War Museum North and luxury homes. Tourism too, Mersey Ferries run regular trips from The Quays to Liverpool - a great day out. Finally, perhaps, a return of the former commercial glory may come to pass. Peel Holdings, who now own the Canal , plan to create “Salford Port” near Barton Locks. Big ships may once again return to the upper reaches of the Canal. Written by: John Kirwin
