Welcome Spring is just around the corner and there’s lots of activity in the local community. After Valentine’s day, wedding season is in full bloom and we’ve invited local wedding suppliers to share their views on what’s hot for 2014. We also feature some more unique wedding services! A special focus on Swinton this issue, which has undergone some major changes with large investments at the shopping centre ‘Swinton Square’, and at Fit City, now called ‘Swinton & Pendlebury Leisure Centre’. There’s plenty more to read from community news to local history and forthcoming events. Don’t miss our competition to win lunch for two at the new Dumez Deli in Monton! The beautiful baby image on the front cover was supplied by Bubbaloo Photography.

Community News

Salford Bridgewater Rotary FUNDRAISING...NETWORKING...SOCIALISING The Provisional Rotary Club of Salford Bridgewater invites you to join them in fundraising networking and socialising! Rotary is a worldwide network of inspired men and women who translate their passions into relevant social causes, to change lives in communities.

Join our club We are looking for new members that have a flexible approach and like to stand out from the usual crowd! We meet every 2 weeks at the John Gilbert pub in Worsley at 7.30pm, normally until 9pm. We just meet for a casual drink and to discuss what we are working on and any ideas and plans regarding new fundraising or helping in the community. Every few months we go out for a social event usually a

meal either locally or in Manchester.

Recent projects We currently have a Rotary garden near Tesco in Walkden where last year we were involved in Incredible Edible - this should continue this year too. We also held an online auction and took part in a really fun day Dragonboat Racing and a fashion show at the Marriott Worsley Park. We have more plans for this year so if you feel you would like to get involved call Michelle on 07977 297148. You can find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/groups/salfordbridgewater.

Branch Saved from Closure

Bolton and North West Manchester’s local NCT branch has been saved from closure after a group of enthusiastic local parents took on the running of the group.

An exciting programme of events has been planned for 2014, including nearly new sales, baby groups, pram walks, ante-natal and first aid courses as well as social events. A full list of events is available on the branch website:www.nct.org.uk/branches/bolton-nw-manchester Events are open to members and non-members.

The previous committee had stepped back from their roles as their children grew older, leaving the branch without organisers. The new committee came forward after an urgent call for volunteers to keep the group going.

Local events in Salford planned so far:Weekly Monton Pram Walks: Wednesdays at 11am. Meet on Stableford Avenue near the church. Walk along the loopline, or if it's raining, go to a local cafe for a natter and cake! First Aid Sessions at Walkden Gateway. These will be held regularly. Check website for dates.

Jenny Kenwright, mum-of-four from Bolton, and the new Branch Co-ordinator for Bolton and NW Manchester NCT, said: “I volunteered to join the NCT committee because I’ve enjoyed attending their coffee mornings and baby groups over the past few years, and I felt it was time to pay back the support I’ve received. Above all parents need support and friendship. We want to help parentsto-be and new parents get together to form a friendly and accessible support network.”

Manchester & Salford Branch

FREE MICROCHIPPING: (3rd-11th M ay) RABBIT AWARENESS WEEK It is estimated by the Rabbit Welfare Fund that over 67,000 rabbits end up in UK animal sanctuaries every year. The majority are unwanted children's pets but a vast amount are also rabbits that have been found stray.

The RSPCA Manchester & Salford Branch will be celebrating this year's Rabbit Awareness Week (3rd to 11th May) offering free microchipping to all pet rabbits.

If you'd like to get your rabbit microchipped for free, head over to St Matthew's Church Hall, Chapel Lane in Stretford (opposite Stretford Mall) on Saturday 10th May 2014 12.30-3.30pm. They will also be clipping rabbit and guinea pigs claws.

Believe it or not the most common reason for coming into the care of the RSPCA is straying rabbits! That's right, so many hop off out the garden never to return. "Reuniting bunnies with their owners rarely happens", says Susie Hughes, Branch Manager, but if they had been microchipped we could have a lot less homeless rabbits in the UK.

Salford Students Benefit from Beacon Award Winning College Salford City College students are reaping the benefits after the college was named the national AoC Beacon College for Sport in the Curriculum. The college sees sport as a way of bringing students together and has invested heavily in providing sporting activities for all students of all abilities.

The Sports Development Team also run an in-house Sports Reporters’ Academy, which sees students working alongside industry journalists, film-makers and radio presenters to develop their professional reporting skills. It’s been so successful that the college has been invited to be involved with the reporting of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Led by the Sport Development Team, Salford City College has established partnerships with a range of organisations, including the Manchester United Foundation, Steve Davis’ CueZone into Schools, Salford Red Devils, Manchester FA, Amir Khan’s Gloves Community Centre, and many more. These partnerships provide students with unique opportunities to work alongside sporting professionals and industry experts. Furthermore, the Just4Girls project, funded by Sport England and part of the overall initiative, has successfully encouraged more girls into sport.

Justin Fox-Rothwell, from Irlam, studying Creative Media Production has benefitted from working as part of the Sports Reporters’ Academy. He says, “I would encourage other students to get involved in the Sports Reporters’ Academy, it can lead you to good things, but only if you put the work in. Without this I wouldn't have had access to experiences such as filming a documentary on Amir Khan and meeting former snooker champions, Steve Davis & John Parrot“. Expression Sessions! Family run photography company ‘Bubbaloo’ have made a name for themselves as fantastic newborn photographers for the last 4 years, and now, having opened the doors to a wonderful new studio in Roe Green, they’re going from strength to strength. Our new ‘Expression Session’ has been proving very popular, and could be the perfect way to ‘dip your toes’ (or your little ones toes!) into the world of professional photography! Essentially it’s a short and simple 30 minute session full of fun. Expression Sessions take place at the studio, and we’ll cram as much fun and silliness into your half hour slot as possible, all with the aim of getting plenty of wonderful shots of your little one, quite literally expressing themselves as only they know how! These sessions are part of our bespoke range, and the best shots are put together in a finished product that you can take home as canvas, acrylic or framed. We will capture your little ones personality in such a way it creates a real snapshot of them at that moment in time, one that you will cherish for years to come. Expression Sessions are a wonderful way to mark birthdays, special events, and they make a great gift too. Please do get in touch if you’d like more information, or to book your Expression Session today - we can’t wait to see you!

A Medieval Wedding CHARLOTTE k CHRISTOPHER

In this Wedding issue, we wanted to feature a local wedding with a difference... Charlotte and Christopher Williams had a Medieval themed wedding at Ordsall Hall on 20th April 2013:The Theme... “Our medieval wedding was inspired by our mutual love of history and movies like Robin Hood and The Hobbit. We chose the theme first, then found the perfect venue”. The Outfits... Charlie wore a long blue satin medieval dress, a velvet blue overdress with a train with gold trim and lining, and a gold crown. Chris wore a blue velvet doublet with gold-lined sleeves and round hat with a gold veil. Charlie made the main costumes herself using pieces from various patterns which she modified to get the right look, and fabric from a local store in Manchester. Charlie handmade the wedding gown, bridesmaid's dress, groom's jacket and hat and the best man's jacket!

The Wedding Day... The wedding took just nine months to plan and ran without a hitch. “Our guests were very enthusiastic about the themed wedding. Although it wasn't mandatory, most of them took the opportunity to dress up. They came in amazing costumes, some store-bought, some handmade. We had monks, knights, noble ladies and jesters. We had a standard civil ceremony at Ordsall Hall with readings we’d selected, read by a couple of our friends, and music we’d chosen in advance. The reception was held at the Castlefield Rooms in Manchester. We didn't decorate it in the end apart from the floral table arrangements, but the beautiful plain wooden beams, plain white walls and high ceiling really didn't need any help - it was already perfect for a medieval banquet. What made our day extra special? - the weather! It had been snowing a couple of weeks before, so to get a sunny mild day was a godsend!”

Top Tip... “When planning your wedding, ask the venues for recommendations. Never having planned an event like this, the choices for things like DJ's and florists were daunting. Asking Ordsall Hall and the Castlefield Rooms for their recommendations and who they had previously worked with made it a lot easier. Use their wedding organising experience - their advice was invaluable! Photography: Harrison Phair Photography LIVE IT LOCAL 23

Stories move you. Engage you. Encourage you to laugh, love and cry. A wedding is a story, a celebration of two people in love, shared with family and friends and of course us, J’adore Wedding Photography. Established in 2007, we are a two Photographer team, passionate about each and every wedding we photograph. We are committed to telling the story of each wedding and preserving moments with creative and imaginative photography. Whether sun, rain, wind or snow we guarantee to please.

Wear or Tear it?...something a little different! Not only do we offer the traditional wedding day photography, we understand many couples want something a little different after their big day, something to give them chance to dust off the cobwebs off their treasured wedding dress. So we opened a ‘wear or tear’ service of Photography that gives couples the chance of creating some astonishing images in any location of their choice. Wear or Tear gives you the option to just ‘wear it’ once again in all its glory in any location of your choice. It could be a beach at sunset, a manor house or castle, the list is endless! For those who want something a bit more daring and bespoke, you have the Tear option. You can do something crazy and create image’s that reflect your personality, circumstances or style....

Please browse our Wear or Tear page on our main website to see more stunning images.

For more inspiration... We believe a picture says a thousand words, so all we can say is, view our stories captured in images at www.jadoreweddingphotography.co.uk If you would like to call for a coffee and have a chat about your requirements, with completely no obligation, why not give us a ring:

Icing on the Cake Wedding cakes are often the artistic centrepiece of the reception. Celebrations & Cake Creations look at a few of the trends for 2014. Making a Statement! From tall multi-tiered cakes to upside down, gravity defying pieces, brides are looking for ways to make their wedding cake an unforgettable one. Round cakes are also taking centre stage in 2014 with different tiers, different heights and various finishes on each tier. Non traditional shapes are also on the increase! Frills and Ruffles Frills, folds, rosettes and ruffles that mimic designer wedding dresses was all the rage in 2013 and is set to continue throughout 2014.

Edible lace to match the brides gown is also rising in popularity! Bold Colours To really stand out, opt for bold splashes of colour on the icing and decoration. Graduated tones of one colour can transform a cake into something really modern, using pastels to bright colours. Gold, Silver & Bronze A trend started by the Australians, is set to take off in the UK in a big way, using gold leaf and metallic accents to create an opulent centrepiece!

With over 30 years experience in beautiful bespoke cake design, we can create wonderful celebration cakes in any design or flavour to suit your needs. We can supply or help you organise any event, from birthday parties to weddings.

Local History

TRAINS, BOATS AND PLANES The Making of Manchester PART I: TRAINS Manchester, despite having its name originating from a small settlement in Roman times was, until the 18th century, a quiet little country town. It paled into insignificance when compared to such cities as York, Lincoln or Norwich. Apart from agriculture and coal mining a small scale occupation of the area was textile production - home spinning and weaving - skills taught by Flemish immigrants in the 14th century. Local conditions for this were perfect; a humid climate, soft water and a skilled workforce.

The Industrial Revolution The dawn of the Industrial Revolution changed all that and much of that Revolution was born in Lancashire. An explosion of engineering creativity transformed the textile cottage craft into a voracious industr y that grew and demanded tens of thousands of people to work in ever more mills and vast amounts of raw materials to feed the world wide demand for cotton textiles. “Cottonopolis” was born and it was hungry. The essential raw material was cotton, principally from the southern states of the USA, and this made its way to Liverpool where it met a bottleneck in the shape of transport to the cotton spinning and weaving towns.

Weaving Shed Haworth’s Mills, Ordsall 30 LIVE IT LOCAL

Hopelessly inadequate roads, horse-drawn wagons, slow river and canal traffic, high tolls and charges - and the same problem was presented for the export of the manufactured materials. Something had to be done and quickly. The answer was rail transport, at that time only utilised by collieries for short trips. The most notable of these being the Stockton to Darlington line.

Liverpool & Manchester Railway Inspired by three men - William James a land surveyor, Joseph Sanders a Liverpool merchant and John Kennedy a Manchester mill owner the Liverpool & Manchester Railway company was founded in 1823 by Henry Booth, yet another branch of the “Booths of Barton”, and other Liverpool and Manchester merchants. A Bill was presented to Parliament in 1825 for its construction. This was rejected, chiefly due to the opposition of landowners on the proposed route. However, the following year, the Bill passed and George Stephenson was appointed Engineer for the project. In order to placate certain landowners the route was changed and that change posed a formidable task - the crossing of Chat Moss, at that time an impassable bog. Construction of the Line was an exceptional engineering achievement for its time. It began with the boring of the Wapping Tunnel, 2250 yards long beneath the city of Liverpool, from the docks to Edge Hill - the first such tunnel in the world beneath a major city. This was followed by a two-mile cutting, 70ft deep, through solid rock at Olive Mount and a nine-arch viaduct over the Sankey Brook Valley. Each arch span being 50ft wide and the viaduct 70ft high. Excavation and bridges at Olive Mount

1831 view of the Sankey Viaduct

The biggest challenge was Chat Moss. The route demanded that almost 5 miles of the bog had to be crossed, terrain where even today the peat (drained and dry) is up to 30ft deep. In those days, saturated with water, it may have been twice as deep. The attempted causeway to carry the line was continually swallowed into the bog until Robert Stannard, one of the site workers, suggested that timber and heather frames be sunk as rafts. On these, stones and earth were placed until, eventually, the causeway was established by accumulation. Those rafts support the embankment to the present day and the ground still trembles when a train passes. The railway eventually needed a total of 64 bridges and viaducts, all of brick and masonry except one - the bridge at Water Street in Manchester, built of cast-iron beam girders. It is a testimony to Stephenson’s genius that virtually all of these structures still exist today. A railway without locomotives is a non-event and it was by no means certain that locomotives would be used. People feared these mechanical monsters, belching steam and smoke and imagined them running amok or exploding. Cable haulage was favoured by some, where the train would be pulled by cables powered by static steam engines. Indeed, for a short time, cables were employed on short steep gradients such as Rainhill and down to the Liverpool Docks. However, sense and technology prevailed and the Rainhill Speed Trials took place. Stephenson’s “Rocket” won against a variety of locomotive rivals, demonstrating the potential power of steam, and the age of steam locomotion by rail was born! The line was officially opened 15th Sept 1830,

Railway over Chat Moss

with a host of dignitaries which included Prime Minister, the Duke of Wellington and the MP for Liverpool, William Huskisson who, on that day, through an unfortunate accident became the first railway fatality. The Liverpool & Manchester Railway was however, an immediate commercial success. It fed what became a mill-building mania throughout South Lancashire and world dominance in textile production. It also set off a railway-building mania in this country, and worldwide, mostly by British engineers. Written by: John Kirwin
