Launches Brand New Website Kidscan, the Salford-based children’s cancer research charity, is this month celebrating the launch of its brand new website. Designed to make getting involved in exciting fundraising events even easier, the website details all the ways in which you can raise vital funds to help children suffering from cancer. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or a keen volunteer, there are so many ways that you can help to save a child’s life. Cancer is currently the leading cause of death in children in the UK, with 25% of those diagnosed failing to make it to their 30th birthday. Kidscan was set up in 2003 to develop lifesaving treatment specially tailored to each individual one of the
1,600 children diagnosed with cancer each year. The charity’s scientists work to create treatments that are just as effective as those used on adults, but with a gentler effect on their bodies, helping young sufferers to have the childhood they deserve. Receiving no external funding, Kidscan relies completely on the public’s kind donations. Fantastic breakthroughs in treatments have already been made, but Kidscan needs continued strong support to keep progressing its research and save even more young lives. To find out more about how you can make a difference through fundraising, or to make a donation, please visit: http://kidscan.org.uk

With so many proud new parents singing our praises we’re confident that our experience and passion will shine through in your pictures. We prefer to photograph newborns when they are about a week old while they are still bendy and super sleepy. We recommend booking as soon as possible after your 20 week scan to avoid disappointment, as our sessions do tend to fill up quite far in advance. If you are due soon or have already had baby, do get in touch though as we occasionally have last minute availability.

Your Best Friends Soon Cele brating ou r 10 yea r An niversa ry! “Animals in our care receive the same love and attention as pets of our own.” Ensuring pets are happy and well-cared for in their owners’ absence is the top priority of Petpals West Manchester owner Geoff Riley, who will soon be celebrating the company’s 10 year anniversary. Mobile services range from dog-walking to pet-sitting and cat visits. Petpals West Manchester also offers home-boarding for dogs and small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs. Geoff says Petpals provides the very best possible care, tailored to pets’ individual needs. “We are all experienced pet owners and excellent pet-care professionals. We’re very skilled at what we do and treat all animals with love and respect. I’d trust my team to look after my own pets any time, and that’s the highest recommendation I can give! Since more people are learning of our pet home boarding service, we’re looking for another person to join us and help the company continue to grow.” Petpals West Manchester have embraced social networking and set up their own Facebook page in 2013. What can I do moving forwards and to mix things up?
How do I start? If you haven't exercised for a while the best way to start is getting those sneakers on and starting with a brisk walk and when you feel up to it an easy jog, intermittently with brisk walking. Where? Get out into the local environment - woods, fields, parks etc are all the perfect place to start. Apart from brisk walking what else can I do? Use things in the environment such as steps, benches etc to do interval training and step up the pace a bit!

Pilates: The Key Benefits There are many benefits to Pilates, below are three key ones to this form of exercise: YOUR ALIGNMENT: Pilates encourages and focuses on a good posture which in turn reduces the impact and stress on your spine in day to day life and can help relieve back pain. YOUR STRENGTH: Pilates is a whole body conditioning programme that builds strength, in particular your core strength. A stronger body improves overall health, balance and awareness. You are less likely to suffer from muscular/joint pain or injure yourself. YOUR FLEXIBILITY: Pilates encourages a strong body but also a good balance between flexibility and strength focusing on dynamic stretching. Flexibility allows your muscles to be free of tension and movement becomes less restricted, allowing better blood circulation.
Pilates can work for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level PLEASE REMEMBER TO MENTION LIVE IT LOCAL WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS

TRAINS, BOATS AND PLANES The Making of Manchester PART II: THE SHIP CANAL
January 1894. The opening of the Manchester Ship Canal, led by the yacht Norseman.
The transformation of Manchester from a minor country town into a mighty manufacturing powerhouse, had been given its first impetus in the 18th century with the building of the Bridgewater Canal. This had brought cheap fuel and raw materials to feed a growing industry, but it had its failings in slowness of delivery and low volumes. The next great step, in the 19th century, had been the building of the world’s first goods and passenger railway by George Stephenson, connecting the port of Liverpool to Manchester. Manchester and its satellite towns prospered and so did Liverpool, which creamed much profit from Port charges on every cargo. Yet more profit accrued to the railway company and the Bridgewater Canal. Seemingly there was enough for all whilst world demand for the products of “Cottonopolis” soared....but hard times lay ahead. Starting in the 1870’s demand began to slacken. What came to be known as “the Long Depression” took a toll on the cotton industry in the whole region. Manchester had, over the preceding years, exported not only its finished cotton goods, but also the machinery and technical expertise that made them, to the world. Now, in many of its markets, comparable goods were being produced - and much cheaper. Though Manchester’s quality was still in much demand, at the lower end of the scale lay stiff competition. The Manchester business community, ever resourceful, looked for means to restore the competitive edge, against a background of mill closures and rising unemployment. The focus was on what they regarded as the “excessive” tolls, port charges and transport costs that originated in Liverpool. Faced with an unwillingness 24 LIVE IT LOCAL
to reduce such costs, they decided that there was only one solution. If they could not access the sea cheaply, then they must bring the sea to Manchester, via a Ship Canal! It had been done before of course. In 1734 the Mersey and Irwell Navigation had succeeded in making both rivers navigable for small, shallow draught vessels to reach as far as a wharf near the Cathedral. But both rivers constantly silted and in times of low rainfall, traffic came to a stop.
The Birth of the Ship Canal A radical solution was proposed by Manchester manufacturer, Daniel Adamson. In 1882 he called a meeting of representatives of neighbouring towns, local politicians, trade unions and civil engineers to form a Provisional Committee to advance the project. A Civil Engineer, Edward Leader Williams, put forward a plan for a channel to be excavated and dredged in the two rivers’ beds and a series of locks to be built whereby the Navigation could rise to the elevation of Manchester at 60 feet above sea level. This plan was approved and formed the basis of a Bill to be submitted to Parliament, at the end of 1882. The Provisional Committee appointed Joseph Lawrence, a noted fundraiser, to motivate interested parties and he organised public meetings across the region. It was estimated that the project would cost £5.16 million and take four years to complete (both estimates would later prove somewhat optimistic!). Not surprisingly, despite widespread support for the scheme throughout the Lancashire towns, the sole opposing exception was Liverpool, which saw the Canal scheme as a major threat to its income. So strong was this opposition that at its first presentation to Parliament, the Bill was rejected on a technicality. Petitions were signed in protest - the Manchester Petition alone carried 200,000 signatures - and led to a second

presentation to Parliament in 1884. Again, it was rejected, due to Liverpool opposition, on the grounds that a canal would lead to the siltation of the Mersey Estuary.
the Panama Canal. Some 54 million cubic yards of soil and rock were excavated - half as much as that for the Suez Canal - sufficient to create two large hills on the route.
However, an unwitting solution was provided by an engineer who was testifying on behalf of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board. When asked what he would do to avoid the siltation problem, he stated “I would start the Canal at Eastham and pursue a separate course from the river to Runcorn alongside the Ince Banks”. Williams promptly incorporated this diversion into his plan and, on a third presentation to Parliament, the Bill was approved, as The Manchester Ship Canal Act 1885. A condition of the approval was that the Company formed to build and own the Canal must purchase its predecessors, both the Bridgewater Canal and the Mersey and Irwell Navigation, as these were seen as losers to the Manchester Ship Canal. This purchase resulted in the issuance of the world’s largest value cheque at that time, of £1,710,000!
It employed at peak 17,000 “navvies” who were paid fourpence ha’penny an hour for a 10 hour day (£16 a day in today’s money). In machinery, the project used 200 miles of temporary track, 180 locomotives, 6,000 trucks and wagons, 124 steam-powered cranes, 180 other steam engines and 97 steam excavators. The canal necessitated the building of a number of high level rail and road bridges, the most notable being Barton.
A total of £8m was raised to cover that purchase and construction costs, but this was exhausted after four years and only half of the project was completed. It was estimated that a further £7m and two more years were needed to complete. The money came from Manchester Corporation (the ratepayers of course!), which acquired majority representation on the Board of the Company. The final total cost of £15m, at present day values, is equivalent to £1.65 billion, but to achieve such a project today would leave little change from £20 billion! The Manchester Ship Canal is still the longest river navigation (essentially the old Mersey/Irwell courses), in the world and the 8th largest ship canal. At 40 miles it is only slightly shorter than FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504
The Barton Acqueduct was built to replace Brindley’s stone ver sion that carried the Bridgewater Canal over the Irwell (now the Ship Canal). It became the world’s first swing acqueduct and carries a water section of the Bridgewater weighing 800 tons to this day. Together with its neighbouring road bridge, it is Grade II Listed. The Canal was opened along its whole length on 1st January 1894 and a procession of ships headed by the yacht “Norseman” travelled the course. On 21st May, Queen Victoria performed the Official Opening Ceremony and Knighted the Mayor of Salford, the Lord Mayor of Manchester and the builder, Edward Leader Williams. The Ship Canal made Manchester the third busiest port in the Country. By 1958, traffic had landed a peak annual tonnage of 18 million long tons. Ocean-going ships of up to 15,000 tons traded across the world and the city had its own shipping line, Manchester Liners, sailing as far as the Great Lakes of Canada. But that’s another story, for our next issue.... Written by: John Kirwin LIVE IT LOCAL 25

Save Money by Repairing Windows by Window Geeks It can be stressful when things break or go wrong, especially when it seems the only solution comes at great expense. Unexpected bills can hit households very hard at a time when every penny counts and it means that thousands of homeowners put off fixing their windows or doors for fear of the high costs usually associated with these types of products. “Lots of people have problems with their windows,” says Tony McNorton, our surveyor in Manchester, “they get steamed-up and won't clear, the locks stick, they refuse to open …and it becomes even more of a problem in the winter when cold draughts get through... but what’s really surprising is that most people don't realise that all of these problems can be fixed quickly and without spending a small fortune”.
28 LIVE IT LOCAL
The fact is that the average single repair or replacement undertaken by WindowGeeks, which includes locks, handles and hinges, as well as the usual replacement of steamed-up windows is less than £50...not surprising really when you consider that the replacement of a single steamed-up double glazed window can be as low as £30 including VAT and fitting. WindowGeeks specialises in the repair and/or replacement of failed double glazed units, window and door locks, handles, friction stays and hinges. In addition, the company also supply and install new doors and window frames where a repair isn’t cost effective or simply where the customer is looking for a change.

Creating a Great First Impression! by DriveClean Northwest The first thing people see when entering your house is your drive, which in reality may have cost £000’s to have done. Unfortunately due to the UK climate, block paving, pattern imprinted concrete, flags and Indian sandstone can become infested with weeds, grass, algae, lichen and moss. This can mean that your investment can start to look a bit of an eyesore. ,
Cleaning and maintaining your outdoor areas is important not only aesthetically but to prevent them become slippy and dangerous. So what do you need to do to keep on top of this arduous dirty job? 1. KILL THE WEEDS - with weed killer from a DIY store 2. DEEP CLEAN - use a heavy duty flat surface pressure washer 3. RE-SANDING using fresh kiln dried sand (Block Paving) 4. SEAL IT - an application of suitable sealer (optional) With the correct equipment this job needn’t be as lengthy and dirty as you may imagine. However, get this wrong and you have the possibility of throwing away hundreds of £’s, use up a good few days of your life that you will never get back and also land yourself with a seriously bad back.

CL ASSIC DRIVEWAYS Golden Trowel Winners 2007 & 2013 Classic Driveways’ Award Winning Design
In 2013, Classic Driveways won first prize in the Domestic category of the Golden Trowel Awards which recognises excellence in concrete design and construction. Sponsored by national supplier PICS (Pattern Imprinted Concrete Supplies), the annual awards invites everyone involved in the decorative concrete industry to submit their best projects from the last year. Judges from the Concrete Society then choose the top three entries from each of the classes. From hundreds of entries, it was Classic Driveways’ stunning pattern imprinted design that caught the eye of the judges. Taking several weeks to complete, the beautiful driveway combines attention to detail with excellent craftsmanship.
