Neighbourhood Management in Claremont and Weaste Improving your neighbourhood IN Salford
Neighbourhood Management is a way of working with communities to make sure that local people can have a say in decisions about their area. It recognises that we need to listen and respond to people at a local level if we are to get things right. This means you have more influence over how local services are provided and delivered, from street cleaning and improving parks to crime and safety in your area. Salford is divided into eight Neighbourhoods, each consisting of 2-3 wards. Each has a Community Committee which provides a forum for residents to get involved in decisions and has its own budget. The Committees identify local priorities and develop action plans for their area. Neighbourhood Management Teams support the committees by working together with the council,
police, fire service, health service, housing agencies, youth services, community groups, and other agencies. We aim to make things better for your area and to provide services that meet your needs. You can get involved! Community Committee meetings are bi-monthly and are open to local residents to attend. So you can get involved, have your say and influence decisions being made about services provided in your area. Get involved further through some of the working groups attached to the Community Committees, focussing on specific issues such as parks, road safety, children and young people. BUILE HILL HOUSE A Cradle of Democracy Here in the Manchester area, in 1815, they gathered around a cotton merchant in Manchester named John Potter. He, his sons and his friends had much in common. They were mostly of similar business interests, had DEMOCRACY - described by Winston Churchill non-conformist or Unitarian religious convictions. as the “least evil of systems of government”, is They also had a social conscience that aimed not a new idea. Buile Hill House in the 1900’s Left: Buile Hill Park by JM Barett (1914) Painting held at the Salford Museum & Art Gallery Right: Photo taken from the book “Salford 19001914” by Roy Bullock
In 1830, John Potter died in Buile Hill House and was succeeded there by his second son Thomas. He formed the “Second Little Circle” which, growing in confidence and influence, petitioned Parliament to grant two MPs to represent Manchester. Finally, in 1832, the relentless pressure for Reform came to fruition when, still opposed by the Prime Minister the Duke of Wellington, Parliament passed the Reform Act - a major foundation of our present system of government. The Circle members, by then, had aspired to direct involvement in Government, John Potter’s sons included. Thomas became the first Mayor of Manchester when Borough status was granted, Richard (the fifth and youngest son) became the MP for Wigan and other Circle members also became MPs. When Thomas Potter died he bequeathed Buile Hill House and its grounds to the Nation. It became, for a time the official residence for successive Mayors of Manchester. In later years, further land was added to the grounds by Salford and became the Grade II Listed Park that it is today. The House had a long career as firstly a Natural History Museum, then as the Lancashire Mining Museum, finally as a short-lived Conference Centre.
Sadly now, this building stands forlorn with its windows boarded, for lack of funds, imagination or interest on the part of the local government that owes its very existence to the Reformers of the past. It awaits inevitable vandalism and then, no doubt, demolition and sale to some “developer”. Such is the probable fate of another historic building – Monks Hall in Eccles. Sadly historic buildings (apart from the much-favoured Ordsall Hall) have scant respect in Salford. Were Buile Hill House in London it would be revered, well-tended, period furnished and a shrine of Democracy. The Little Circle was one of the main driving forces for our present voice in our government and this house was where they worked their great deeds. This, briefly, is the history of this distinguished building. The Park in which it stands, apart from surprising scenic beauty, also has a fascinating past - to be related in a future article. Remember your favourite childhood book ? It is rumoured that “The Secret Garden”, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, was written at Buile Hill on one of her many visits here! BRIDGEWATER SCHOOL Where individuals count Bridgewater School is a co-educational, independent day school for pupils aged between 3 and 18 years. Bridgewater is by design not a large school. This enables us to provide small classes and high levels of attention to the needs of individual pupils. We seek to maximise education attainment all through a child's development, not least in the years of external examinations at GCSE and A-Level.
part of Bridgewater's role to foster high standards of behaviour and self-discipline, as well as to develop an awareness of personal and social responsibility. Vital, too, are the many activities which take place outside the classroom – sport, music, drama clubs and societies, language exchange visits and outdoor activity breaks to name but a sample of the range available.
In addition to its academic goals Bridgewater seeks to retain the intimate atmosphere it has had since its inception. We greatly value our capacity to offer provision across the full age range, from the nursery years to university entrance, for families wanting this continuity of individual attention for their children.
Entrusting your child's education to a school is a very big decision. We are mindful of our responsibility to justify a parent's decision to send their child to us, and of the need for that child's education to be a partnership between school and home. We aim, by the end of this partnership, to produce rounded, articulate young people who are well prepared for the challenges of adult and business life.
At the same time, however, pupils must look outward to the wider community and to the society in which they will live as adults. We see it as an integral
If you have not yet visited us, we would be delighted to meet and show you how much Bridgewater School has to offer you and your child.

History Students Dig For Victory at Buile Hill Park Pendleton Sixth Form Centre History students were recently involved in an archaeological dig at Buile Hill Park, alongside University of Salford’s Centre for Applied Archaeology. Buile Hill Park is an amalgamation of two former estates which each contained a mansion house. One of them, Buile Hill is still standing and is a Grade II Listed Building. Built in the 1820s, Buile Hill was designed by Charles Barry, the architect of the Houses of Parliament. The dig, however, focused on the second mansion, Hart Hill. This Elizabethan-style house was built in 1859, but demolished in the early 20th Century. The house was built for James Dugdale, a Merchant, and it is thought that much of the substantial property still exists underground. The house was situated in wooded grounds

and by the 1840s was approached via a lodge on Eccles Old Road. It probably replaced an earlier farmhouse; ‘Harts Hill’, mentioned in the Eccles parish registers as far back as the 17th century. The students were allocated their own trench and found a range of architectural features including pipes, hinges, parts of the wall and flooring. In addition, they found a range of pottery, glass, buttons, a clay pipe and even a tooth! Also found on-site; a hair comb, a pair of shoes and crockery. Head of History, Melanie Vance, said “The students had a fantastic time at the dig; it was fascinating to learn about the History of a landmark that is literally on our doorstep. Fortunately the students did not dig up the plague pit from 1590 which is also thought to exist on the site, so local residents can rest easy!”

Doing what we love! When we opened Petpals in 2004, we had no idea how popular the service would be! We tend to find that dogs love a lunchtime walk in any weather, particularly when owners lead busy lives, or are simply unable to provide the amount of exercise they would like for their pets. We are also busy visiting cats whilst owners are on holiday. Cats are territorial creatures, and love to stay in their own environment. In fact, it is said that cats have a stronger bond with their territory than they do with their owners! Each year brings new clients, and lots of puppies and this year has been no exception. It’s interesting to see the trends in the dogs that people are welcoming into their homes and anything crossed with a Poodle is certainly proving popular at the moment.
Labradoodles, Sproodles, Cavapoos and Cockerpoos to name but a few. Here’s one of the latest to join our morning walk – she’s definitely a cutie! Petpals have embraced social networking in 2013 and customers can check their pets’ daily antics our Facebook page. Reuben, our Springer Spaniel hosts the page and he certainly has some fun with his Petpals Pals every day. Join us by adding “Reuben’s Pals”. When we tell people what we do, they often imagine us walking through fields, surrounded by dogs that are bounding through the long grass under blue skies. The staff at Petpals all agree that working with animals is hard work but very rewarding…..but if we could just do something about that weather!

LLEYTON’S CHRISTMAS PARTY APPEAL! Can you help Lleyton host a party here in the North West? Lleyton Coombes, born December 2006, lives in Salford with mum Jo & dad Lleyton - Summer 2013 Lee. He was born at Salford Royal and diagnosed with Niemann Pick Type C disease at 6 months old. Lleyton’s condition isn’t well known so “Pride in Lleyton” was set up by four local mums to increase public awareness and understanding, and raise funds to help find a cure. Niemann Pick is rare, life limiting neurological disease. Life expectancy is 10 to 15yrs of age depending on age at diagnosis. Those affected will usually develop dementia as a symptom of the disease. There are only 50-80 children diagnosed with this condition in the UK and about 500 worldwide. Each year the group Lleyton belongs to (Niemann Pick Disease Group UK) holds a Christmas party for all the children with the same condition and they come from all over the UK. It is held in different regions each year in the hope that THE FAMILIES can get together for this happy event for at least one of the parties. This year the North West has been chosen to host the Christmas party for 40-50 children on Saturday 7th December, 11am-3pm.
n Selection boxes n Children’s Party Food n Taxi’s as low rates to transport families to and from the train stations & hotels. n Santa Sleigh for the children to sit in - a tall order but it would make the day so special. n Celebrity appearances - do you know any who would visit the children for an hour? If you think you could help Lleyton host this event and make it one to remember (don’t forget it’s also about making memories for the families) please let us know and we will give you more an update on what we still needed. RESTORING CAR PAINTWORK TO SHOWROOM CONDITION Small bumps and scrapes - minor accidents can happen to anyone at anytime. ChipsAway Worsley provide a cost effective alternative to the traditional body shop service and this is how we do it...
1
A typical ChipsAway repair: a bumper scuffed against a wall reversing into a parking space causing deep scratches through the paintwork and the bumper plastic.
2
The panel is prepped to ensure complete cleanliness and the damaged area is rubbed with an abrasive to remove any protruding rough spots and minor scratching. The rear wheel is covered to ensure it is protected from any dust or mess.
a Specialty Lacquer Blender. The repair is then dried for 45 minutes using infra red lamps.
6
Once the area has cooled down the lacquer is then cut using a fine abrasive. This removes any texture or imperfections in the lacquer and creates a flat surface. The repair is the polished and buffed to a brilliant, smooth shine. All masking is then removed.
7
The surrounding panels are then cleaned. Your flawless ChipsAway repair is then revealed!
3
The deep scratches are filled and rubbed flat. A primer is then applied to seal the damage, then rubbed down again until completely smooth. The bumper is prepped again before paint is applied and the work area masked off to prevent overspray.
4
Paint is then applied in light coats. Every coat will span slightly wider than the previous to ensure perfect paint colour blend.
5
Two coats of lacquer are applied to seal the new paint and acquire the correct shine. The edge of the lacquer coat is thinned with FOR ADVERTISING OR GENERAL ENQUIRIES, PLEASE CALL 0161 790 2504
