Family friends, distant relatives and neighbours who have stepped in to look after someone else's child are classed as private foster carers - and it's thought there could be hundreds living in Salford who don't even know it. There is a range of help and advice on offer if you are a private foster carer, including free leisure passes for children. Mission Christmas 2014 1 in 3 children are living in severe poverty in Greater Manchester. 1 in 3 children on our doorstep go to bed without a hot meal in a house without central heating. This means that as Christmas approaches, 150,000 children in our City will not have a present to open on Christmas Day. Key 103’s Cash for Kids Mission Christmas looks to brighten Christmas for these children by asking you to buy an extra present when doing your Christmas shopping. Last year, Manchester took the appeal by storm as 1,417 businesses and schools across the city signed up to support our campaign.

We smashed our target to raise £1m worth of toys and delivered presents to over 32,000 children across Manchester. The support and generosity of the people of Manchester was overwhelming, and we are asking for your help again this year. The statistics are still standing. We are even more determined to help local children and ensure as many children as possible in Manchester wake up to a present this Christmas. Mission Christmas will NOT change the poverty statistics for our city BUT Mission Christmas WILL make a difference to these families on Christmas Day.

"Let it glow, let it glow, let it glow" It's been another busy month in Monton, where the local volunteers have been helping the Monton Village Community Association (MVCA) to tidy up the greens and roundabouts, ready for winter. The residents' and traders' association is now turning its attention to the annual Christmas Lights Switch On, taking place on Thursday, 27th November starting at 6pm. All along the high street, Monton will glow with Christmas lights through to the New Year, and we hope you can join us on the day to get the festive season off to a great start. Father Christmas will be taking a well earned rest from making toys and will be visiting us, so come down to the high street to meet him. If you are

young enough and nice enough to Father Christmas, you might even get a lovely present! Many of the local shops will remain open, so don't forget to look out for the I♥Monton stickers in participating shop windows. Bring your MVCA membership card to get some fantastic discounts in the shops. As ever, local community associations such as MVCA are always lucky to have willing volunteers to help out with local events. If you would like to get involved, with the Christmas Lights events or in general, we would love to hear from you. Contact Maxine Coyle:- Mobile 07745 768622 or email maxinecoyle@hotmail.com. We look forward to seeing you all!

LIGHT UP A LIFE “The only jobs I haven’t done are flower arranging and helping on reception. The hospice wouldn’t keep going without the volunteers and I’ve no intention of giving it up.” Dedicated Averil Hart has been helping St Ann’s Hospice for 37 years - almost as long as the charity has been in existence. She became a volunteer after her late mother Elizabeth Hart was a patient there in 1976, just five years after the hospice opened. “In those days, I cared for my mother at home before she went into the hospice and it’s wonderful that nurses now go out into the home to care for people,” said Averil, age 82. Averil spent almost two decades as a bereavement visitor for St Ann’s, and her voluntary work has also involved helping in day care.

Last year, Averil also supported the hospice’s Light up a Life appeal and remembered her mother, and her sister Audrey, at a special Light up a Life service held by St Ann’s. Light up a Life is an annual appeal which allows supporters to celebrate the lives of their loved ones by dedicating a light on a Christmas tree to them, and raises a significant amount of money for the charity. To find out more about taking part this year, you can visit www.sah.org.uk/light Light Up a Life Service - St Ann’s Little Hulton Sunday, 14 December 2014, 4.00pm (Outdoors) Tickets FREE, but must book in advance

LLEYTON’S CHRISTMAS PARTY 2014 Niemann Pick Disease Group (UK) Annual Children’s Party

Gayle with Coleen at last year’s party Last year, Pride in Lleyton Appeal organised the annual Niemann-Pick UK Christmas Party at Swinton Park. It was star-studded event with Coleen Nolan and Chelsee Healey supporting the day, and help from many local businesses. Led by chief organiser Gayle Gamble, it was such a success that the NPDG(UK) have thrown tradition out of the window (a different venue every year) and have asked them to hold it here in the Northwest again this year. The date is set for Saturday 6th December at Swinton Park Golf Club, 10.00am to 4.00pm for 60 children from 18 months to 21 years of age who suffer from Niemann-Pick disease.

Gayle is already getting things organised but needs help from local businesses with:n Goodie Bags - Boys & Girls n Character Appearances n Selection Boxes n Face painting / glitter tattoos artists n A good rate on local accommodation for the children travelling to Manchester n A good deal from a local restaurant as some may travel the night before n Individual children’s presents (ask for list) Or anything else you think they may need! Contact Gayle at lleyton@hotmail.co.uk A HUGE thank you goes out to everyone who has signed up to help. Without the local support, this event could not take place.

monton green DENTAL PRACTICE GOING TO THE DENTIST IS NOT ALL ABOUT FILLINGS... CHILDREN’S TEETH ARE IMPORTANT If children’s teeth have to be taken out while a child is growing the remaining teeth can come through in the wrong place. Take your children to the dentist from an early age and get the advice that you may need.

TEETH WHITENING It is now illegal for anyone other than a dentist to provide teeth whitening. This is to protect the public from the use of damaging chemicals and only a dentist can tell you if your teeth are suitable for any particular whitening technique.

POOR GUM HEALTH IS LINKED TO HEART DISEASE If you suffer from bad breath or get bleeding when you brush, it is time to get checked out at your dentist and see a hygienist.

At Monton Green Dental Practice we have experienced dentists and hygienists plus a specialist orthodontist, implant dentist and children’s club to offer a comprehensive, prevention based service.

MOUTH CANCER Cases of mouth cancer are growing but treatment is improving. Early detection by a careful examination at your dentist can save you extensive surgery or even your life.

Get ready for Christmas

Festive Beauty Hidden Beauty, a brand new salon, has just opened this October in the heart of Worsley Village. With 20 years experience in the beauty industry we asked them to share a few of their top tips for looking your best this festive season!

Nail Trends

Glowing Skin

Nails are the icing on the cake when it comes to dressing. Colours change every season to match the latest fashion trends.

Who doesn’t want a golden glow all year round? Tanned skin boasts a subtle radiance that can help you look healthier and fitter, giving you more confidence.

This winter, with the darker nights come deep, moody tones; think dark berry, rusty reds and gunmetal greys. For the party season, metallic shades will be a popular choice, adding some festive glitz to your outfit. Nudes still remain on-trend from very sheer to opaque. At Hidden Beauty we offer Acrylic or Gelish nails and can find the perfect shade to match the latest trends.

Christmas Party Looks The festive season is the perfect opportunity to try out a whole host of bold new looks. This year it’s about bold red lipstick, volume hairstyles, extra long lashes, strong eye definition and perhaps a touch of metallic eyeshadow. Eyelash extensions are one of the fastest growing treatments in the UK. Try our “Lash Perfect” semi-permanent eyelash extensions; made of the highest quality materials and last 8-12 weeks.

Spray tans are a safe way to achieve a sun-kissed look and can also hide blemishes on the skin to create flawless looking skin. Here at Hidden Beauty we use Xen-Tan; a safe, high quality product which contains no toxic ingredients. In fact, there area a lot of ingredients such as Green Tea, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Shea Butter and Gingko Biloba which help to moisturise, strengthen and balance the skin.

Visit us for the new Temple Spa Red Carpet Skin Therapy Miracles range which gives you ‘photo-finish’ results in seconds. Use for everyday glamour or a quick fix for your big event.

Introductory Offer all full price treatments on your first visit to Hidden Beauty,

love... a slimmer C hristmas with

Slimming World

Join a friendly group near you to make your weight loss dreams come true

It's Christmastime and, as the carollers sing, 'is the time to be jolly. At Slimming World this time of year really can be... jolly delicious, jolly satisfying, jolly sociable and jolly slimming too! People often think that celebrating Christmas and enjoying the party season involves making a choice between being boring or blowing it when it comes to their weight loss campaign. But whether it’s Christmas Day or a Christmas party, it’s important to remember that it’s just one day and that it’s what you do every day that makes a difference to your weight. Nicola Culshaw of Slimming World says “the key is to be flexible and plan ahead.” Slimming World have provided us with some top party season strategies to make sure you sparkle this Christmas:l Before a big Christmas party, make sure you fill up on a healthy meal, like pasta, to set you up for the night ahead. Your body will absorb any alcohol more slowly, and you’ll be less likely to reach for high calorie snacks like crisps or nibbles or be tempted by a late-night snack. l If you struggle with late night munchies, ensure you’ve got something delicious to come home to, like a home-made chilli or curry you can heat up quickly and easily. They’ll be better for the wallet and the waistline – and tastier too! l Many restaurant menus can be found online now. If you’re eating out, check the menu first and choose the best option to help you stick to your slimming plan. Get a jacket potato instead of chips and request sauces and dressings on the side (then you can control the amount you eat). l Party buffets can be loaded with high-calorie and high-fat foods. Choose things like lean slices of ham or beef, chicken with the skin removed,

salmon or boiled eggs for a weight conscious way to fill up. Veg sticks, fruit and wholemeal sandwiches are a good way to satisfy your appetite too. Avoid fried foods and pastry-based snacks, as well as high-fat sandwich fillings like butter and cheese or mayo dips. l Alcohol is a challenge for the waistline at Christmas. Make drinks last longer by asking for a tall glass and adding lots of ice and extra diet mixers to spirits, or top up wine or lager with diet lemonade or soda. It’s a good idea to alternate alcoholic drinks with low calorie soft drinks to stay hydrated - and you’ll feel fresher in the morning too! l Hit the dance floor and incorporate some activity into your night out! l If you do over-indulge, don’t beat yourself up, you’re human - and it is Christmas! Just get straight back to your healthy eating plan. A great start is a big grilled breakfast with grilled lean bacon, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms, eggs fried in low calorie spray, baked beans and wholemeal toast. Or make a huge pot of winter warming soup packed with scrummy veggies. See www.slimmingworld.com for some great recipes. EXCLUSIVE OFFER for readers joining one of Nicola's Slimming World groups before Christmas:Receive a FREE copy of the "Slimming World Christmas" book on production of this magazine. Bursting with festive bakes, cocktails, home-made gift ideas and a host of party nibbles, not to mention tasty ideas for leftovers too!

Don't wait until January - unleash the Christmas cracker in you for 2014!

Ordsall Hall “Please to remember the 5th of November, Gunpowder, Treason and Plot” So goes the rhyme about the infamous plot to blow up Parliament in 1605, with barrels of gunpowder secreted in the cellars of Westminster, by Guy Fawkes. Fawkes was a Catholic and one of a g ro u p of d i s a f f e c te d a r i s to c r a c y aggrieved by the Reformation which had supplanted their faith. The aim was to destroy not only Parliament and all its Members, but also King James I, who had succeeded Elizabeth to the throne. Where was this dastardly deed suspected to have been planned by its chief conspirator Robert Catesby and others? Where else but Ordsall Hall, the home of the Radclyffe family, also devout Catholics, and friends of Catesby? The local legend was given more substance in 1842 by Harrison Ainsworth in his novel about the event “Guy Fawkes”. In this he writes that Fawkes, in his escape after the Plot was foiled, used a tunnel which led from Ordsall Hall, under the Irwell River, to an inn close to Manchester Collegiate Church (the present Cathedral). There is some evidence that a tunnel once existed….but for what purpose it was built is a mystery. It’s worth remembering though that “Bonfire Night” and its attendant festivities, not least the burning of Fawkes in effigy, may well have had its beginnings in this old building on the banks of what is now the Manchester Ship Canal. Whatever the truth of this matter, Ordsall Hall certainly has a lot more history in its timbers, bricks and stones.

The Hall and The Radclyffes To begin with it is one of the oldest building sites in Salford, indeed in Greater Manchester. The earliest record of a settlement on the site dates from 1177 when “Ordeshala” paid 2 marks in feudal tax.

In 1251 the Manor was owned by a David de Hulton and in 1335 it passed to the Radclyffe family, who came from Bury (a place now known as Radcliffe). It was to remain with this prominent family for over 300 years. The Ordsall estate consisted of 164 acres of land situated on a wide bend of the Irwell, what is all now Salford Quays.

LIL NovDec14_Issue 8 25/10/2014 14:57 Page 29

Local History

In 1354 Sir John Radclyffe, a prominent knight in the service of King Edward III in the wars against the French, took possession of the Hall. To commemorate the three battles in which he had distinguished himself, the King gave him the right to use “Caen, Crecy, Calais” as the family motto. As part of his reward for service the King permitted him to take a group of Flemish weavers home to his estate. It seems Sir John was not only a valiant soldier, but also a shrewd businessman! A seemingly trivial favour was to become the foundation stone for the textile industry in Lancashire. In the 15th century the Hall was principally a building built with a timber frame of oak, infilled by “wattle and daub”, on a sandstone foundation. Although not a fortified house, there was a moat surrounding the building. Bricks not being in general use at the time, the infill consisted of willow stems plastered with mud, straw, cattle dung and anything else which came to hand, then lime-washed. The Radclyffes were a remarkably fecund and successful family. They married into all the local gentry so that they shared relations with the de Traffords (who lived just across the Irwell), the Breretons of Worsley and the Booths of Barton. However, despite earlier good relations, a feud developed with the Booths whose land bordered their own. This culminated, in 1444, with an incident between the two families that led to tragedy. Several Radclyffe brothers and their friends were hunting in the Weaste Forest in a part known as Little Bolton. This was a hamlet known as late as the 19th century, where Ladywell Hospital used to stand until just a few years ago. They were confronted by a group of Booths and their retainers who disputed their right to hunt in the area and a fight broke out. In those days it would have been fought with swords, knives and even arrows - rather more aggressive than a modern gang fracas - and the results more drastic. Two of the Radclyffes were killed and a Booth also. A subsequent legal case PLEASE REMEMBER TO MENTION LIVE IT LOCAL WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS

however, found all participants acquitted of any crime, a curious result for 3 deaths and probably some nasty wounds… Such was the resilience of the times though, that two generations later the families were yet again marrying each other. In 1512 Sir Alexander Radclyffe, then head of the family, on becoming High Sheriff of Lancashire decided to make Ordsall Hall much grander. He had the old Great Hall demolished and built a new one (which exists to the present day). Away went the earthen floors of accumulated straw and 200 years of filth and the “Star Chamber” (so called because of its star-shaped lead ceiling bosses) was also added. The Hall grew further, in 1639, when his namesake, another Sir Alexander added another brick wing. Sadly his timing for such ambitious spending was to prove a little rash, for the Civil War was soon to break out. This pitted Parliament against King James II and Sir Alexander, as a Royalist, backed the wrong horse. He was imprisoned for the duration and, on release, found himself in hard financial straits. When he died his son John had to sell the Hall and end his family’s long association with it. However, reputably one Radclyffe still remains in residence. The “White Lady”, said to be Margaret Radclyffe who was a favourite Lady in Waiting to Queen Elizabeth I, “died of a broken heart” when her twin brother drowned at sea. Since 1599 she is said to haunt the Great Hall and the Star Chamber. In 2004 a TV series which investigated famous hauntings, made her the subject of one programme. Since then webcams have been installed by Salford City Council in the hope she will seek further stardom! The past 300+ years have seen the Hall with many additions, interesting residents and uses but, after a major restoration recently, it is now a civic attraction and eminently worth a visit.
